- 1:32on.
- 1:33This is series five, and the granular topic
- 1:37is, of course, series five, show 35, episode
- 1:39number two.
- 1:40Can you actually be trusted with more?
- 1:42Welcome, everyone.
- 1:44As I said to the ever-popular Inspirations
- 1:45for Your Life show, I am John C.
- 1:47Morley.
- 1:48I am a serial entrepreneur.
- 1:50I'm an engineer, marketing specialist, video producer, podcast
- 1:54host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student at Montclair
- 1:57State University, a passionate lifelong learner, and so
- 2:00grateful now to be a published author.
- 2:03Before we officially get into the show, I
- 2:07want to give a shout-out, because today
- 2:08is Sunday.
- 2:09On Sundays and Thursdays, we give shout-outs
- 2:11to local businesses in the area, and the
- 2:15reason we do this is we like to
- 2:18let them know what they do, thank them
- 2:19for being in business, but also ask them
- 2:21to go out to jcmacademy.com, click on
- 2:24the Contact Us button, and to learn what
- 2:27we do and to invite us into your
- 2:30shop or restaurant so we can do a
- 2:31live show, and then after that, of course,
- 2:34an author talk, author Q&A, and an
- 2:38author signing.
- 2:40Today we're giving a shout-out to Mocha
- 2:42& Co.
- 2:44They are actually open at 10 p.m.
- 2:46tonight.
- 2:47They're in Englewood, New Jersey.
- 2:49They have a very interesting type of shop
- 2:52that I can see here just from looking
- 2:54at it.
- 2:54Pretty nice-looking.
- 2:55They're open Monday through Sunday.
- 2:57This is what's interesting.
- 2:59Monday through Saturday, 7 to 10, and Sunday,
- 3:028 a.m. to 10 p.m. That's
- 3:04really cool for a coffee place, because a
- 3:07lot of times, these places, they don't stay
- 3:10open very long.
- 3:13The Yemeni coffee difference, this is what they're
- 3:15called.
- 3:16According to their website, when their founder came
- 3:18to the United States from a family of
- 3:20Yemeni coffee farmers, he came with history and
- 3:23tradition, but also an extremely fine-tuned palate
- 3:27for exquisite coffee.
- 3:29It's safe to say they know coffee.
- 3:31All coffee plants in the world could call
- 3:33Yemen home, but on the mountain slopes of
- 3:37some of Yemen's most famous coffee towns, Jaffa,
- 3:41Haima, and Ismaili, to name a few, ancient
- 3:45plants still grow ancient flavors.
- 3:48In some cases, these plants are over 1
- 3:50,000 years old and boost a flavor hearkening
- 3:54not just to the difference of a place,
- 3:56but a difference in time, preserved through family
- 3:59tradition, but also through some very ferociously steep
- 4:03mountains that keep Yemeni coffee incredibly rare.
- 4:07They have an interesting menu, and I was
- 4:09just looking at their menu here.
- 4:13They have traditional Yemeni coffee with tea brewed
- 4:17with unique spices.
- 4:18They have a brew bar.
- 4:20They have signature lattes.
- 4:21They have refreshers, tea brewed with unique spices,
- 4:26matcha lattes, drinks made with rich espresso and
- 4:29steamed milk, frozen blends, Yemeni coffee and tea
- 4:32brewed with unique spices, espresso bar, drinks made
- 4:35with rich espresso and steamed milk, comfort bar,
- 4:38Yemeni coffee and tea brewed with unique spices.
- 4:41Sounds pretty interesting if you ask me.
- 4:44So again, they have some interesting coffees.
- 4:46I was looking to see if they had
- 4:48anything else.
- 4:48It looks like I can at least here
- 4:50on the site, I just see coffee.
- 4:52I don't know if they actually have anything
- 4:53else beside coffee.
- 4:55They may.
- 4:57So Mocha and Company is a franchise.
- 5:02And so it's basically called a Yemeni cafe.
- 5:05And really interesting to see the kinds of
- 5:08stuff that they have.
- 5:09They have like a shop too and some
- 5:12other things.
- 5:12So pretty interesting.
- 5:13You may want to check this out if
- 5:14you're in the market for some foreign coffee.
- 5:16So again, Mocha and Co., I hope you'll
- 5:18come over to jsimacademy.com, click on the
- 5:20contact us button and invite us in to
- 5:22do a live show at your place.
- 5:25All right, guys.
- 5:26So our master topic of the week, as
- 5:27I said, is become someone your future can
- 5:30actually depend on.
- 5:32And today I'm asking a question that might
- 5:35make you think differently about the opportunities you're
- 5:37asking for.
- 5:39Can you actually be trusted with more?
- 5:44That's the big question.
- 5:45Can you be trusted with more?
- 5:48What goes through your head when I say
- 5:50those things?
- 5:51Like when I say that, what really comes
- 5:53through your head?
- 5:53Does anything come through your head or does
- 5:55it kind of like just stop?
- 5:57I mean, seriously, does anything really go through
- 6:00your head when I say that?
- 6:01Or do you be like, I don't know,
- 6:02I'm not really sure.
- 6:03What does that actually mean?
- 6:06I think that's an important thing for us
- 6:08to realize.
- 6:10So let's dive into this a little bit
- 6:11deeper, okay?
- 6:13So again, a big welcome to everyone to
- 6:15the Inspiration to Your Life show.
- 6:17And I want to let you know that
- 6:19each week we come up with a brand
- 6:21new master topic.
- 6:22And then on top of that, we basically
- 6:25have a granular topic every day that links
- 6:31into the main master topic.
- 6:34So become someone your future can depend on.
- 6:36Can you actually be trusted with more?
- 6:39That's the question we're asking.
- 6:40Now, a lot of people want more responsibility,
- 6:43authority, influence, freedom, control.
- 6:46But before asking for more, answer this one
- 6:49question.
- 6:49What are you doing with what you already
- 6:52been given now?
- 6:54Responsibility doesn't just test your ability, it reveals
- 6:57your character.
- 6:5830 points that I think you guys are
- 7:00going to really enjoy.
- 7:02Responsibility reveals character, talking about what you do
- 7:05if you were in charge, let's say, and
- 7:08making it easy.
- 7:10Actually being in charge shows who you are.
- 7:12Earn trust before asking for authority.
- 7:15A title gives you authority.
- 7:16Only consistent behavior earns trust.
- 7:20Handle small responsibilities well.
- 7:23How you treat today's tasks determines whether anyone
- 7:27trusts you with tomorrow's.
- 7:30Stop wanting influence without accountability.
- 7:33If your voice matters, you own what happens
- 7:37when people act upon it.
- 7:39Be careful with what others entrust to you.
- 7:41Information, money, projects, confidence.
- 7:45Treat each as the risk it represents to
- 7:49the giver.
- 7:50Make reliability visible through action.
- 7:53Don't claim it.
- 7:54Show up, follow through, communicate, and don't require
- 7:58reminders.
- 7:59Respect access that has been given to you.
- 8:03Access is a privilege, not entitlement.
- 8:06Don't confuse being let in with being owed
- 8:09a seat.
- 8:10Don't misuse somebody else's confidence.
- 8:15Trust takes years to build and seconds to
- 8:18destroy.
- 8:19Protect what isn't yours to share.
- 8:22Become dependable under pressure.
- 8:25Anyone looks reliable when things are easy, guys.
- 8:27Yeah, real dependability shows up when the plan
- 8:31falls apart.
- 8:32Take ownership when something goes wrong.
- 8:35Don't hunt for someone to blame.
- 8:38Ask, what happened?
- 8:40What can I control?
- 8:41What needs fixing?
- 8:43What changes next time?
- 8:45Stop hiding behind your position.
- 8:47A title should raise your accountability, not shield
- 8:50you from it.
- 8:51I think a lot of people miss that,
- 8:53right?
- 8:53They miss that whole concept and they don't
- 8:55necessarily know what to do.
- 8:58Treat responsibility as something earned.
- 9:02It's often evidence someone believes in you.
- 9:06And I think when you learn that, it's
- 9:08like, oh my gosh, I actually get this.
- 9:10This makes sense.
- 9:12And now I'm able to do something pretty
- 9:13powerful, right?
- 9:15That's a pretty cool thing.
- 9:17But you have to first understand where it
- 9:20comes from, okay?
- 9:26Where does it come from?
- 9:33What does it mean to you?
- 9:39Like, what does it mean?
- 9:47I think it just makes people think differently.
- 10:00I think that would make anyone change their,
- 10:03hopefully, their trajectory, okay?
- 10:07Prove your current responsibility is safe in your
- 10:11hands before asking for more.
- 10:14A lot of people I know want more,
- 10:16but they can't even handle it.
- 10:17So because of that, it's like, oh my
- 10:19gosh, what do they do?
- 10:20What are they supposed to do?
- 10:22And again, that's a very big thing to
- 10:25think about.
- 10:27If we can't be responsible for what we
- 10:29have now, how can we dare ask for
- 10:31more, right?
- 10:34How can we dare ask for more?
- 10:37I think that's an important thing for us
- 10:40to all realize right now.
- 10:42How can we ask for more?
- 10:46How?
- 10:47How do we ask for more?
- 10:52And more is about how it makes us
- 10:57better.
- 11:06I think that's something that a lot of
- 11:08people miss.
- 11:13But I think it's something we really have
- 11:14to pay attention to in our lives and
- 11:16everybody else's lives.
- 11:18Learn to keep confidential things confidential.
- 11:21I know so many people, you know, you'd
- 11:23share confidential things and then they have to
- 11:25blow them out just because it's who they
- 11:27are.
- 11:27Doing that destroys the trust, okay?
- 11:32It destroys the trust and that's a big
- 11:34problem.
- 11:36And then nobody wants to come back and
- 11:37share anything with you, unfortunately, right?
- 11:45I think that's a problem that many people
- 11:48face each day is that, you know, they're
- 11:51trying to act cool, but then they didn't
- 11:54realize that they blew their responsibility and you
- 11:57don't get a second chance to show people
- 11:59you're responsible.
- 12:00That's the thing.
- 12:02Knowing something doesn't mean it belongs in the
- 12:07next conversation.
- 12:10Knowing how and when to keep your mouth
- 12:12shut, I think that's a very positive thing.
- 12:15But, you know, maybe when you're younger and
- 12:19people said stuff to you and you're like,
- 12:21oh, well, that's no big deal.
- 12:22I used to know somebody I would share
- 12:24something with and it was private, confidential, just
- 12:26something I didn't want to get out.
- 12:29And five seconds later, it was blasted.
- 12:32So a good way to get something out,
- 12:34I would say, look, this is a secret.
- 12:36Don't tell anybody.
- 12:37And in five minutes, the whole thing went
- 12:38out.
- 12:39Don't tell anybody.
- 12:40We've got cookies and the cookies are only
- 12:42$2, but don't tell anybody because they're going
- 12:45to be $5 after three o'clock.
- 12:48Bam, it went right out.
- 12:50Knowing when not to speak matters as much
- 12:53as knowing what to say and when to
- 12:56say it.
- 12:59This comes down to your personality.
- 13:02It comes down to respect, OK?
- 13:06And these are things, again, a lot of
- 13:07people, they just, they miss it.
- 13:10They miss it.
- 13:13Ladies and gentlemen, learn to make decisions people
- 13:15can trust.
- 13:18Yeah, make decisions people can trust.
- 13:20Not just something you're going to do for
- 13:22today, guys.
- 13:23Something you're going to do time in and
- 13:26time again.
- 13:28Why is trust so important?
- 13:30I think trust is so important because if
- 13:31you're not trusting, then other people won't trust
- 13:34you, OK?
- 13:41That's a very important thing.
- 13:50If you lost trust with somebody, would you
- 13:56give them a chance to do it again?
- 13:58I probably wouldn't.
- 14:02It could take not just hours and days
- 14:07and weeks, months, maybe years to build trust.
- 14:12Why would you destroy that in the fraction
- 14:15of a second?
- 14:16The question is why?
- 14:18Why would you destroy that?
- 14:20That's the question.
- 14:22Build a reputation for weighing facts, not ego.
- 14:27Convenience or emotion.
- 14:30Don't use authority to feed your ego.
- 14:34If a power dynamic changes how you treat
- 14:38people, it didn't create that feeling.
- 14:41It exposed one already in you.
- 14:49The power that you're given maybe when you're
- 14:51in a role.
- 14:53That power exposes who you already are.
- 14:57You're already doing things like that before the
- 15:00power.
- 15:00But now that you have this power and
- 15:04you abuse it, it's saying something about your
- 15:07character, OK?
- 15:09Remember that access creates obligation.
- 15:13More access to information, resources, or people means
- 15:18more responsibility to use it as well.
- 15:21I say something a lot, guys.
- 15:23You know what that is?
- 15:24And that is just because we can doesn't
- 15:27mean we should.
- 15:31Just because we can does not mean we
- 15:33shouldn't.
- 15:34I think that's a real big one that
- 15:35so many people are like, well, of course
- 15:38we can do it.
- 15:39Maybe it's not the best thing to do,
- 15:44OK?
- 15:47Maybe that's what it's about.
- 15:52Maybe.
- 15:53Maybe you're missing a point.
- 16:06I think it's about recognizing who we are
- 16:10and then understanding that whole concept that just
- 16:14because we can doesn't mean we should.
- 16:17Learn to protect what has been placed in
- 16:19your care.
- 16:22Guardians have trusted things with you because they
- 16:24believe that you're a person of high character
- 16:27and moral regard.
- 16:30Don't make them regret that they decided to
- 16:35choose you.
- 16:36A relationship, a project, someone's confidence, a reputation,
- 16:41guard it with your life.
- 16:47Guard it with your life, OK?
- 16:50I think that's an important piece, guys.
- 16:57Guard it with your life, all right?
- 17:02Become trustworthy when nobody's checking.
- 17:05You know, I think the easiest way to
- 17:09be trustworthy is when everybody's watching you, OK?
- 17:12You know you're on stage or you're on
- 17:13camera or somebody's just checking up on you.
- 17:17You know that you want to keep doing
- 17:20the right thing because people are watching.
- 17:22But when you want to keep doing the
- 17:24right thing, regardless of whether somebody is watching
- 17:27or not, that is showing your character.
- 17:30And your character of your morality and your
- 17:34ethics comes through.
- 17:38And what you do in private shows in
- 17:40public.
- 17:42The real Tesla, gentlemen, is what you do
- 17:44when no one will ever know you did
- 17:47it.
- 17:48Use influence to improve situations.
- 17:51Don't exploit it with your influence.
- 17:53Don't let your ego become the tool that
- 17:58could be a wrecking to you, OK?
- 18:05These are important things.
- 18:07Bring clarity, solve problems and challenges, connect people,
- 18:12move good ideas forward.
- 18:14Stop confusing status with leadership.
- 18:17I know lots of people being an ego
- 18:20scout for many, many years.
- 18:22I remember when I was in a patrol,
- 18:24that's what they call it.
- 18:25And I remember this one person who had
- 18:26an ego.
- 18:27And then when I was in his patrol,
- 18:28I'm like, oh, this is going to be
- 18:29like, you know what?
- 18:31And he abused his patrol leadership on me.
- 18:36So much to the fact that he kept
- 18:39giving me KP duty, which is kitchen patrol.
- 18:42But he wasn't being fair about it.
- 18:44And guess what happened?
- 18:46Other leaders learned, why is John on KP?
- 18:49Oh, because, you know, he's a jerk and,
- 18:53you know, he didn't listen to me.
- 18:55And you just gave him KP?
- 18:57Yeah, for the whole week.
- 19:00That's kind of rotten.
- 19:02Yeah, well, you know.
- 19:04What about the other guys?
- 19:05Oh, well, you know, I didn't do it
- 19:07to them.
- 19:08I thought you'd think that's a little unfair.
- 19:09And as that happened, something changed.
- 19:17I crossed the line of becoming a leader.
- 19:24And when somebody in my patroller squad stepped
- 19:28out, I wanted to help them.
- 19:30I didn't want to just damage them and
- 19:32give them KP.
- 19:33I say, look, guys, there's some duties here.
- 19:35KP is not fun.
- 19:36So what we're going to do is we're
- 19:37going to rotate them.
- 19:39No one's going to have KP more than
- 19:41once on a trip.
- 19:47Status is your spot on the card, interest
- 19:59on the card.
- 20:00Can you believe that?
- 20:06I think that's a real important thing for
- 20:09you to actually understand.
- 20:17I think that's an important part that many
- 20:21people miss.
- 20:22They miss that.
- 20:29They miss that whole concept.
- 20:34Leadership is what happens because you're in the
- 20:37room.
- 20:38The trust, judgment, and responsibility you bring.
- 20:41Let responsibility sharpen your judgment.
- 20:45Each responsibility teaches you what needs urgency.
- 20:48When to speak or listen.
- 20:50When to move fast or slow down.
- 20:52Be accountable without being chased.
- 20:54If people have to keep checking on you,
- 20:57that's not real ownership.
- 20:59Close your own loops.
- 21:00Think about who your decisions affect.
- 21:03Employees, clients, family, colleagues.
- 21:05Leadership means weighing impact beyond yourself.
- 21:09Use power carefully.
- 21:11Money, information, authority, access, expertise, influence.
- 21:15All are power.
- 21:17The more you hold, the more carefully you
- 21:19must use it.
- 21:21Earn the next opportunity through this one.
- 21:23Don't neglect what's in front of you while
- 21:26chasing what's next.
- 21:28Handle this one so well the next becomes
- 21:30obvious.
- 21:31Become someone others can safely rely on.
- 21:34Can people trust your word, your judgment, your
- 21:37presence even when things get hard?
- 21:40Carry responsibility without becoming arrogant.
- 21:42More trust should bring more humility, not superiority.
- 21:46Your decisions now affect more people.
- 21:49I think we've got to realize that.
- 21:51I think that's a very important thing for
- 21:56us to understand.
- 22:00And that's important, guys.
- 22:04And I say that to you because it's
- 22:08something most people don't get.
- 22:12I think that's really the most important thing
- 22:16that I want to share with you.
- 22:18And now that we know that we could
- 22:19be more responsible, make trust worth giving you.
- 22:25Protect what's given.
- 22:26Keep commitments.
- 22:27Communicate clearly.
- 22:28Own your mistakes.
- 22:30More responsibility requires more character.
- 22:32As stakes rise, small lapses in judgment cost
- 22:35more.
- 22:36Build character alongside skill.
- 22:38Become someone people can trust with more.
- 22:41Don't answer based on what you hope you
- 22:43do.
- 22:44Look at the evidence.
- 22:46Do you keep commitments, protect confidences, take ownership,
- 22:51communicate, stay dependable, under pressure, use influence, responsibility,
- 22:56and hold your standards when no one's watching?
- 22:58Or do you just do when people are
- 23:00keeping up with you?
- 23:01Just curious about that comment.
- 23:04What does it mean to you in your
- 23:06life?
- 23:06How do you treat those kinds of things?
- 23:10That tells you if you're ready.
- 23:14Most people think they're ready, but you know
- 23:16what happens?
- 23:17They're not.
- 23:20They think they're ready, but they're really not
- 23:24ready.
- 23:28They're really not ready.
- 23:30I think that's something that most people don't
- 23:37know.
- 23:41You don't know until you know.
- 23:48Do you know what I mean?
- 23:55That's the whole key.
- 23:58You don't know until you know, but sometimes
- 24:00it becomes all about an ego.
- 24:04It becomes all about an ego.
- 24:12That's a problem, guys.
- 24:16It's a very, very big problem.
- 24:18One that most people are going to miss.
- 24:21So let's think about that for a minute.
- 24:25I get that the ego might seem like
- 24:27it satisfies the community.
- 25:04This is what I want to know.
- 25:05What does it mean to you?
- 25:09If you don't know what it means, then
- 25:11maybe you're going to be like, how do
- 25:15I make this change?
- 25:43And you're kind of like, you're doing something
- 25:45because you're doing it for the reason, right?
- 25:47So I want to get ready to close
- 25:48the show out here today.
- 25:50Maybe you want something more right now.
- 25:52A bigger role, more freedom, more influence, more
- 25:55money, a bigger project.
- 25:56Instead of asking, why haven't I got my
- 25:59opportunity yet?
- 26:00Ask, what can I do with what I
- 26:01have right now that proves I'm ready for
- 26:04more?
- 26:04You don't control every opportunity or every decision
- 26:07someone else makes.
- 26:08But you control who you're becoming while you
- 26:11wait.
- 26:12You can grow more reliably, sharpen your judgment,
- 26:15communicate better, own things faster, protect people's confidence,
- 26:18and use whatever influence you already have to
- 26:21make things better.
- 26:23Trust isn't just given.
- 26:26Your behavior teaches people whether they can give
- 26:28it to you, whether they should delegate it
- 26:31to you.
- 26:31Once they learn they can, that reputation becomes
- 26:34so powerful for you.
- 26:36They'll know you'll show up.
- 26:37They'll tell the truth, protect what needs protecting.
- 26:40Stay when things get uncomfortable.
- 26:42Take responsibility when things go wrong.
- 26:45And hold your standards even when no one's
- 26:48checking.
- 26:50When no one's checking, that's a real mouthful
- 26:54there.
- 26:55Leisure, what is that?
- 26:57That's character.
- 26:59This week's topic is become someone your future
- 27:03self can depend on.
- 27:05Bigger opportunities bring bigger responsibilities.
- 27:08So prepare your character, not just your resume.
- 27:10Don't ask for authority.
- 27:12Become worthy of it.
- 27:15Don't chase status.
- 27:16Feel reliability.
- 27:17Don't demand influence.
- 27:18Demonstrate judgment.
- 27:20Use today's opportunity to prepare for tomorrow's.
