Latest / Guy Football Focus with Guy Haberman / 49ers Drama or Just Business? Jauan Jennings Contract "Demand"
Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: Hey guys, guy here, Monday morning, and I'm still trying to find the giant Dodgers game from Sunday.
- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I found it, but I can only watch it on my iPad.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_00]: Cool.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, Johan Jennings wants a new contract.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_00]: I just did a livestream on YouTube about it.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: Here's that conversation.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_00]: Good for Juan Jennings on this one, I really had no choice.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_00]: His agent, at last check the agent, I've not seen them sighted today, but at last check, when he did the deal last year, the agent for Juan Jennings was reported as the Rosenhaus Brothers.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_00]: So here we are, they've been asking, they haven't been getting.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what you did.
- 0:43[SPEAKER_00]: Here's the chef's story.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: And it's pretty clear.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I don't think, you know, as always is the case when you do a little bit of an ultimatum like this.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_00]: You don't necessarily have all the power that you say you have, but this is the way it works.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_00]: Trade, trade me or pay me.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_00]: I think Jennings is in a similar boat to Brock in that he's making relatively so little, although he was making seven times scheduled to make seven and a half million, which is seven times what Perti was going to make.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: But he's making so little that a significant race to him is not a significant contract from like a receiver standpoint, right?
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: If you're making seven and a half million dollars,
- 1:27[SPEAKER_00]: is fifteen million dollars with a couple more years after that a reasonable contract for you to accept.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_00]: I would say it is, you know, the thing that a player never says or an agent never says when they make a contract demand is what it is exactly that word demanding.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_00]: We want a new deal.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: Well, how much do you want?
- 1:47[SPEAKER_00]: It makes it hard for me to understand which side to take if I don't know how much you want.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: If you want
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: you know, three years and forty five million dollars.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just pulling that number straight out of thin air based on doubling is current salary for this year.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_00]: That it's easy for me to take your side if you want, you know, like, oh, it's I think I'm a better player than I used all more money than I used.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_00]: That's a separate thing.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_00]: But there's no evidence that that's what he's saying.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_00]: I'd be surprised if that's what he's saying.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that's what he's saying.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: And so the team with the second most effective cap space in the league this year, the four Niners, I'm not going to say, should have an easy time because it's not
- 2:24[SPEAKER_00]: easy for anybody and part of having forty five forty six million dollars.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_00]: In in cap space this year's you want to roll it over the next year when you have at this point eight million dollars in cap space.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not as easy as just when you've got the forty five.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_00]: But it probably does give them some flexibility to front lot of contract and make Jennings happy.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the other part of this is what does it look like?
- 2:48[SPEAKER_00]: Doesn't even get to next week.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_00]: I've seen a lot of that.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the Niners had a drama free off season.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_00]: And now that they thought they were getting away with a drama free off season.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_00]: And that's gone because now there's drama.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_00]: What is there?
- 3:00[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_00]: There was drama with IU because it dragged on and on and on.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_00]: And IU was mad after the Super Bowl and family said, by by San Francisco after the Super Bowl, the last time we're here.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_00]: Like there was so much more to IU situation than just branded IU wanting a new contract.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_00]: Then he shows up and he's going to show up, but he's not going to practice and then he's going to dab up Kyle Shanahan, very awkward put Shanahan in a bad spot.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_00]: You can't not dab the guy up in that spot with everybody watching in the cameras.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: So manipulation behind the scenes, you know, there was, it was not pleasant.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: There's no evidence that this is any of that.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: This is a contract ask.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I think a reasonable one.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm guessing one that he asked for, you know, he didn't just ask for this today.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: He's been trying to get a cut.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_00]: He would love to have gotten it done a month ago.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_00]: The Niners do have, you know, the Fred Warner situation linebacker doesn't get paid by receivers easier deal to do George Kittle tight ends.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_00]: Don't get paid like receivers easier deal to do.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: Jennings is a receiver, but he's a receiver that was making seven and a half million dollars.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_00]: You know, at this point, you're not going to say he's there, just say he's there go to receiver right now is technically true because he's by far their most proven and healthy wide receiver.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, new dad McAfrey kiddo.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_00]: So it gets a little, it's a little gray because the nine are sort of the ball so much to non quote unquote receivers, but he's got a lot of, he's got a lot of leverage here, not enough to demand a trade.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_00]: Our guy Benny, big Benny guy here on the show.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_00]: Is everybody probably is why?
- 4:49[SPEAKER_00]: Why are they big Benny guys?
- 4:51[SPEAKER_00]: Because he plays his ass off.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_00]: He produces, we mentioned this, watching him in many camp OTAs.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: He practiced really hard.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: You don't want to pay him like the number one, because he's not at number one.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the argument, well, you don't have a number one.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm the number one.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_00]: So pay me like a number one, that argument doesn't track.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_00]: But we have no evidence that he's asking to be paid like a number one.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, I think it's more likely than not that this ends up in a comfortable place.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I don't, this isn't Drew Rose, this is Drew Rose and house, but this is not Drew Rose and house in T.O.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: in Drew's trouble making prime.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, my guess is these guys just want to get paid.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: Looking at the live poll because this is a live stream.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, everybody, get here.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: Hit that like button, subscribe to the channel.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_00]: Eighty five percent of respondents say pay them.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_00]: Which, of course, it's easy for me to say that it's easy for you to say it.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_00]: You don't know what the money is yet.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_00]: But, um, I'm going to guess it's reasonable and I'm going to guess there's a reasonable conclusion to this.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm going to say it's more likely than not.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: that this is not the IU situation for a variety of reasons.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: And it's not just that I, you know, had a better argument that he's a number one, even though we could debate that.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's different, because like this is what I would say, Nolan makes a comment here, when you historically reward this behavior, you'll see more of it.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: See, I have a problem with that.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, this is not behavior.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_00]: This is business.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_00]: This is an agent taking care of business.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_00]: I, you, was became became behavior.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_00]: Like, let's see how Jennings conducts himself.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_00]: But to this point, he is not conducted himself the way I, you did.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_00]: He has not been pissy after the Super Bowl publicly.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_00]: I don't we have no evidence that he's been kind of difficult to communicate with privately for them.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_00]: Are these had any issues with Kyle?
- 7:01[SPEAKER_00]: He showed up in practice his ass off it.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: uh, the last team gathering, he says he's going to show up and practice this done.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: That's what chef to wrote.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_00]: He's not expected to be a training camp hold out, but he's not expected to be happy either as the night or saw last summer without you.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: Now you technically not a holdout didn't practice, but kind of made it awkward as Jennings going to do that.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I don't think that's a playbook to follow.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_00]: And again, it just comes down to the money that the frustration for the nighters, I think, with one of the frustrations and they had themselves to blame as well.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_00]: was that they thought they had a deal done without you.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_00]: And then other receivers got paid a lot more money.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_00]: And so the standard of how much brand I you wanted to get paid changed.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: I just think there's that thing was so much more Harry.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_00]: It was so much more Harry because it was so much more than just business.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: This is part of the business of the league.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you don't like
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: wants a new contract or a trade.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_00]: Did I trade him?
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's the other things.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: Like, okay, well, cool.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: You want a trade if you don't get a new contract.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_00]: We're not trading you.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, as I said, I don't think this is like, I don't think all these situations are created equal.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_00]: I do understand the frustration of like, every year it's something, yeah, every year someone wants to get paid.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_00]: Like that is the way this thing goes.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna hold my panicking and this wasn't, see, it's that drama free.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think this hasn't risen to the level of drama yet for me.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: Tom says JJ's a solid number three or number two.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_00]: And my guess is Drew Rosenhaus.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: What's brother is adjacent?
- 9:03[SPEAKER_00]: This is brother.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_00]: These guys are not.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_00]: They are.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Jason, these guys have been around the league.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_00]: They understand player value.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think they are blowing up.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_00]: John, James going, John, you deserve to get paid like a number one, man.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_00]: I doubt that's what's happening here.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_00]: They see a window, they see leverage, they see an opportunity as they should and they see a player who's in the final, every guy ever in the final year of his country.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: No one will place on the final year of their contract.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_00]: It would rarely have like the best players on teams do not play on the final years of their contracts in their primes and John Jennings is, you know, in his prime.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_00]: By the way, he's twenty eight.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: He just turned twenty eight four days ago.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_00]: Happy birthday to Benny.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_00]: He just turned twenty eight four days ago.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_00]: There is a world where
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: this works in the forty matters favor and the four matters have to understand that too right like if and it's a big if but if John Jennings would accept a salary that doubles his current salary and gives him another year or maybe two more years of guaranteed money so say fifty gets getting fifteen this year
- 10:23[SPEAKER_00]: What is he?
- 10:24[SPEAKER_00]: We've just talked about it.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_00]: He was almost a thousand yards should have been a thousand yards receiver last year.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_00]: He's the only healthy proven receiver whose we know for sure available for we can.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_00]: So he's healthy.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_00]: He's proven.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_00]: He's not facing a suspension.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: That.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_00]: any one of those, like, there's, he's the only guy that checks all three boxes in the party house receiving a roof.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_00]: Think about that.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_00]: He's the only guy that checks all three boxes of proven healthy, not facing suspension.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_00]: That's it.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_00]: They got one guy.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_00]: So I said that to say, like, he might have a better year this year than he had last year.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_00]: And he's in his prime.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: So there is a world where F, and again, big F, he's willing to take a doubling of his salary, which is significant life-changing salary concession.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: kid sessions, not the right word, but if he does that, and then hasn't a gear justice go to maybe a little better, because Pearson got hurt again in camp, and let's see if he's healthy, and I eukes out and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, that he's worth at least that.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_00]: And like you look at it next year, you're like, yeah, he's worth fifteen million, he's fine.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he was worth it last year.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_00]: We know that.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: Then you enter a world where he's in the final year, he's a free agent and now what?
- 11:49[SPEAKER_00]: How much is he cost?
- 11:50[SPEAKER_00]: Were you not going to bring him back?
- 12:01[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see here.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_00]: Michael says in the chat, here are our number seven, seven to ten of the top wide receiver two salaries.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_00]: Christian Kirk, A.T.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_00]: Million Gabriel Davis, Thirteen Million, Darna, Monty, Thirteen Million, Darna, Slayton, Twelve Million.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Gabe Davis, like if he's worth thirteen, Jennings worth twenty-two, so maybe he's asking for twenty-two.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_00]: But like, I just think there's a world where he's more expensive to the next year and next year, you're going like, no, we want him back next year.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: This is not, this is reasonable.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_00]: This is reasonable.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_00]: Now again, there is a rub, something's going on because he didn't, Drew Rosenhouse, Jason Rosenhouse didn't just ask for a new contract yesterday.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_00]: And they haven't gotten it.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_00]: So that, you know, the night is feel like, well, that's the game we normally play.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_00]: We can play it with this guy.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_00]: We're not gonna play it with party.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_00]: But we'll play it with this guy.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_00]: This guy's not gonna act like I you.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_00]: Which is why you deck like I do, right?
- 13:08[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, well, I have to act this way if I want a resolution.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_00]: Rich regarding Jennings, I trust he still train a trade hard play hard after he gets paid.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_00]: He was the only weapon in the Super Bowl.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, yeah, it was almost the Super Bowl MVP.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, comment.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_00]: These guys have a contract already.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_00]: You signed it, play for what you signed any position.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_00]: Then I feel needs to fix the guaranteed money.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_00]: Start forcing the contracts to be finished.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, where they can guarantee money.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_00]: Like, this is, like it or not, it's just this is how business is done.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_00]: The teams do business understanding it.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_00]: The teams sign contracts understanding it.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_00]: The players agents do deals knowing we're not actually going to live out.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_00]: the full life of this deal and we're going to have to renegotiate it in blah, blah, blah.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I mean, you see those numbers.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, and he's an emergency QB.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe he's asking for sixty three or sixty million maybe.
- 14:25[SPEAKER_00]: That would complicated if he wants his contract tripled instead of doubled.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_00]: But I do understand that it's
- 14:35[SPEAKER_00]: I do understand that it's annoying.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_00]: Boat says, B.A.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_00]: is untradable.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_00]: He's particularly untradable when you actually want something of value in return.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_00]: Coming from Chris, this is the most agreed upon forty-nineers.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_00]: This is the most agreed upon forty-nineers issue in known history.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_00]: We all side with Benny.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_00]: Let me check the live poll here.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_00]: Eighty four percent of respondents say pan that means sixteen percent of people say trade up, but I mean when when can you get eighty four percent of my as well be a hundred percent when you get eighty four percent of people do agree on anything.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_00]: So there you go, I am to summarize, we need to know what he's asking for.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_00]: I foresee an amount of money that is significant, life-changing, but not prohibitive to the forty-nineers.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_00]: He's not getting traded, and I'm not calling this drama yet.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_00]: The Rosenhaus is no, what they're doing,
- 15:48[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, and I don't think they're asking for, you know, they're asking for it.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_00]: You can money.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_00]: Now, if they're asking for Christian Kirk money, plus a little, that's where it gets a little hair.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_00]: But it's like, OK, you're going to walk away from fifteen million dollars a year when you're making seven and a half and it's going to guarantee a fifteen million dollars next year.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_00]: And that I was going to unique position.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, depending on how much it is, they can pay it front load it and and survive it.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_00]: Sure you go.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_00]: But we'll see.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see what it looks like.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_00]: Reporting being on the field are two different things and we'll get to answer that next week.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: It also is another reminder of how important Ricky Pierce all staying on the field is through training camp.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he ended.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_00]: Now they said by this time, he'll be healthy.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see that's another one.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_00]: We'll probably get some sort of IU update next week.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_00]: So that's another one.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_00]: To Marcus Robinson.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_00]: Suspension.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_00]: That's another one.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: You really think about it.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_00]: It's big of a question as what's Jennings contract situation going to be.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_00]: The drama is not Jennings asking for a new contract.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_00]: The drama is the entire forty-nineers receiver room.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's just everybody's got a question marking in over their head.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_00]: Every single guy.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_00]: Except this guy and now they've got one here, but this should not be news to them.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_00]: The concerning part is it has been going on for a while, but the unconcerning part is the Niners didn't love it, but they did it.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_00]: They took both all the way to the end.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_00]: They took how you go all the way to the end.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_00]: We don't love it, but they did it.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't do it with, party.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't do it with Warner.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't do it with Kiddell.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to do it with Jennings here.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_00]: We can't pay for three expensive receivers.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_00]: B.A.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_00]: Laster Jennings this year and Pierce sold the next two years.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_00]: Will?
- 17:59[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Pierce holds expensive in the sense that he's a rookie.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry, he's on a first round contract, but there's no guarantee that he's getting any money in two years.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_00]: But it's a fair point, right?
- 18:13[SPEAKER_00]: Because what's, you know, Ricky's not cheap.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_00]: Mickey's not cheap.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_00]: On that note, let's finish up the vote, eighty four percent at fell a little bit, a sixteen percent, eighty six percent.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_00]: It's going back and forth.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_00]: There's a battle going on in the pay him or don't or pay him or trade him vote.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll see.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_00]: I think this gets resolved.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks, y'all.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_00]: Later.
