Sam: Hey, welcome back to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're talking about Emotional by Leonard Mlodinow, a book that basically argues everything you were taught about feelings versus logic is backwards. So here's what I want to start with. We've all been told some version of the same thing. Be rational. Don't let your emotions make your decisions. Where does that idea even come from?
• 0:24
Sophie: Hey there Sam. Yeah, and that idea goes back thousands of years. Mlodinow traces it all the way to Plato, who described the soul as a chariot with reason as the charioteer and the passions as these wild horses he has to wrestle into submission. That metaphor stuck for centuries. It shaped religion, philosophy, even early brain science, which treated emotions like bugs in the software of the mind.
• 0:52
Sam: Right, and Mlodinow says that's not just wrong, it's actually harmful. It creates this culture of shame around our feelings, so we ignore real information and end up making worse choices.
• 1:04
Sophie: Exactly. And the evidence he brings in is what really flipped my thinking. He leans on the work of neuroscientist Antonio Damasio, who studied a patient called Elliot. Elliot had a tumor removed from the part of his brain that processes emotion, and after surgery his IQ was untouched. He could pass any logic test you threw at him.
• 1:27
Sam: Which sounds like the dream, right? Pure logic, no feelings getting in the way. But that's not what happened at all.
• 1:33
Sophie: Not even close. His life fell apart. He couldn't hold a job, he made terrible financial decisions, and he drifted from one failed project to the next. He could list a thousand reasons for and against any choice, but he had no way to rank them. Every option was equally good, which meant no decision was actually possible.
• 1:56
Sam: See, that's the part that got me. It's like having a perfect navigation system but no compass. Emotion is what assigns value to things. It's the why, and reason is just the how. Without the why, the how doesn't matter.
• 2:11
Sophie: That's exactly how Mlodinow frames it. Emotion and reason aren't two separate systems at war with each other. They're completely intertwined. And there's a great image in the book for this. Your conscious mind isn't the CEO of your brain. It's more like the press secretary. Decisions get made deeper down, and then your conscious mind writes a tidy story explaining why you did what you did.
• 2:36
Sam: The press secretary thing honestly rattled me a little. Because you can feel it happening. You get a gut feeling that a job is wrong for you, and then your brain immediately produces a very reasonable sounding excuse. The commute is too long, the salary isn't right. And you believe it.
• 2:55
Sophie: Mlodinow calls that region the interpreter. It lives in the left hemisphere, and its whole job is weaving a coherent narrative out of your actions and feelings. It's not lying on purpose. It genuinely doesn't have access to the real reasons, so it improvises. That's why he says the first step is just being honest that your explanations to yourself might not be the whole story.
• 3:20
Sam: Okay, so then the practical question. If emotion is this intelligent system, how do we actually work with it instead of getting dragged around by it?
• 3:29
Sophie: So Mlodinow actually pushes back on the whole idea of emotional intelligence as one measurable trait. What he argues for instead is emotional regulation, and that's not about suppressing anything. It's about managing what you feel and choosing your response instead of just reacting.
• 3:48
Sam: And he gives actual tools for that, which I appreciated. The first one is reappraisal, and there's this great example in the book about giving a presentation. Your heart's pounding, your palms are sweating, and the natural story is, I'm nervous, I'm going to blow this.
• 4:04
Sophie: Right, but reappraisal is just changing the story. You tell yourself, my heart is pounding because I'm excited, my body is getting me ready to perform. Same physical sensation, completely different meaning. And studies show people trained in this are less stressed, perform better under pressure, and bounce back faster from setbacks.
• 4:26
Sam: Which is not positive thinking, by the way. It's a cognitive strategy. That distinction matters to me, because I've always been allergic to the just think happy thoughts stuff.
• 4:36
Sophie: Same, and Mlodinow is careful about that. The second tool is acceptance, and there's a real paradox in it. The more you try to suppress a feeling, the stronger it gets. It's like being told not to think about a white bear. The thought just gets louder.
• 4:53
Sam: So instead of fighting it, you just name it. You say to yourself, I'm feeling anxious right now, and that's okay, it's just a feeling and it'll pass.
• 5:02
Sophie: Exactly. And that removes what he calls the second layer of suffering, which is the shame about having the feeling in the first place. It creates a little space between the thing that happened and your response to it, and that space is where your choices actually live.
• 5:18
Sam: There's a social piece to this too, right? He talks about emotional contagion. You catch feelings from people around you without even noticing.
• 5:26
Sophie: You do. One grumpy colleague can sink the mood of a whole team, and one charismatic leader can pull everyone into a shared sense of purpose. Our brains have mirror neurons that fire both when we feel something and when we watch someone else feel it. That's the biology behind empathy and connection. So it's worth being intentional about the rooms you spend your time in.
• 5:51
Sam: And the memory thing surprised me too. We don't remember events like a video recorder. We remember the feeling of the event. That's why I can tell you exactly where I was on 9/11, but I couldn't tell you what I had for lunch last Tuesday.
• 6:05
Sophie: Right, and the more emotionally charged the experience, the more vividly it gets encoded. Which means your whole life story, your identity, is really a narrative woven out of joy and fear and love and grief. That's not a flaw in the system. That's the system.
• 6:22
Sam: Okay, so here's my honest pushback moment. Part of me wants to say, fine, but when I'm picking a cereal at the grocery store, I don't need a feelings seminar. I just want the one that tastes good.
• 6:34
Sophie: And that's exactly his point. You're not weighing nutritional data with perfect objectivity. You're choosing based on a feeling, maybe a memory of a commercial from childhood, or trust in a familiar logo. That emotional filter is what lets you navigate a world of infinite options without freezing. The goal isn't to remove it. It's to notice it and ask yourself why you feel this is the right choice.
• 7:01
Sam: So the takeaway for me is this. The wise person isn't the one who conquered their emotions. It's the one who learned to listen to them. I'm taking that with me, and honestly, I'm going to try that reappraisal thing the next time my heart starts pounding before something big.

Sophie: The point of this book is simple. Your feelings aren't the enemy of your thinking. They're the compass that makes thinking possible. We'll see you in the next one.
