- 0:00I'm going to come to a text with you at this very moment, and I
- 0:03want to give you a fresh look into the gospel of Jesus Christ,
- 0:09the gospel of Jesus Christ. Not in the gospel accounts, but
- 0:12I want you to hear how one man who experienced the grace of
- 0:17God, an unlikely candidate to be a follower of Jesus Christ, was
- 0:22used to tell others how they can also become trophies of His
- 0:26grace. And so if you do have a Bible in
- 0:28your hands, maybe you don't look over to the person next to you.
- 0:31I'm sure they'll be open to sharing in the book of Titus
- 0:34chapter 2. In Titus chapter 2, we will read
- 0:44in verse 11. Here's what the Holy Spirit says
- 0:57in His word. For the grace of God has
- 1:00appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to
- 1:05renounce ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self
- 1:08controlled, upright and godly lives in the present age,
- 1:12waiting for our blessed hope, The appearing of the glory of
- 1:15our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself up for
- 1:19us to redeem us from all lawlessness, and to purify for
- 1:23Himself a people for His own possession who are zealous for
- 1:27good works. Declare these things, exhort and
- 1:30rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.
- 1:35I want to obey this command today in your presence by
- 1:38declaring these things in your hearing.
- 1:41The beauty of the Christian message is that it is so simple
- 1:44to understand. In fact, it is so simple and
- 1:48direct it actually offends some people.
- 1:51It disturbs them for many reasons.
- 1:56One of those reasons is because it's humbles the intellect.
- 2:01The essence of what it means to be a believer is to be
- 2:06understanding of one sin and realizing that there's nothing
- 2:10within yourself that can grant you right standing before God.
- 2:14It essentially calls you to surrender and trust in self you.
- 2:18You cannot look to anything in your pedigree, in your family
- 2:21heritage, in your performance. It's simply you looking at
- 2:25yourself and determining I am a child of wrath, that if I look
- 2:31to my left or to my right, I may seem like a good person, but if
- 2:34I stand in the presence of God's moral perfection, I am doomed.
- 2:42If He holds me according to His measure and His word and His
- 2:48command, I will never be able to attain His acceptance.
- 2:54And it's it's not that God places something on us that is
- 2:57unrealistic because He is sadistic.
- 3:00It's because His Holiness demands it.
- 3:02He is the Creator of all things. He has determined every aspect
- 3:06of our universe. And as imperfect as it is, He is
- 3:09the originator, not the author of the imperfections.
- 3:12We are the author of the imperfections in this life.
- 3:15He's given us a choice from the beginning of time.
- 3:18Will you continue to fellowship with me or go your own way?
- 3:21Understand this, love has a choice and our parents chose to
- 3:26walk away from him inheriting A fractured universe because of
- 3:32our disobedience. And So what it means to become a
- 3:36Christian from the beginning is understanding that I am not just
- 3:41a Sinner, but I am an object of His wrath.
- 3:45That as the judge of the universe, if He holds me to
- 3:49account, I will have no chance to be deemed innocent.
- 3:55And yet at the same time, I realized that in His great love
- 3:59He extends a payment. He extends his hand of
- 4:03fellowship, and He asks you in your humility to reach out as
- 4:07though you're drowning in the ocean and receiving the rescue
- 4:10that you desperately need. But here's what I want to make
- 4:13mention of in the verses that we read.
- 4:15For the grace of God in verse 11 has appeared.
- 4:20It came 2000 years ago. It was prophesied about since
- 4:25the beginning of time. And this book, though it is not
- 4:27a science book, though it is not strictly a history book, it is a
- 4:31book that defines redemptive history, where we went wrong,
- 4:38how we continue to do wrong, and how God brought a remedy.
- 4:42And so we know that from the beginning of time, God has
- 4:45promised the human race that there would be a Savior to come.
- 4:49I'm going to bring salvation. It has appeared.
- 4:54We don't need to look anywhere else.
- 4:55We don't have to guess. It already came and we're on
- 4:58this side of the cross. You see how we're safe today is
- 5:01we look back and we see what Christ has done and we believe
- 5:04on that truth by faith, how they were saved before Christ as they
- 5:07looked forward and they said, OK, there is someone coming who
- 5:11is going to redeem us. I believe that it has appeared,
- 5:16but notice this also. It has appeared bringing
- 5:18salvation for all people. Salvation in Christ never
- 5:25discriminates. It doesn't have a certain
- 5:28category of wrongdoers that can never be accepted.
- 5:33When Jesus Christ came to rescue sinners, He had every sin in
- 5:37mind and He had every Sinner in mind.
- 5:43And there's not one thing that anyone has ever done that
- 5:47discounts them from actually being accepted in the Beloved.
- 5:51It is for all people. And that in itself is an offense
- 5:55to some. How is it that you can say that
- 5:58so and so in history that has brought massacres to countries
- 6:01and nations and societies? You're saying salvation is
- 6:04available to them. Yes, it is, according to the
- 6:06Bible. Or may you may think of people
- 6:09you know personally that are undeserving of any grace, an
- 6:12ounce of mercy. And yet the Bible says it's
- 6:16available. And you may be even sitting here
- 6:19looking at your own heart saying, brother, if you only
- 6:22knew the corruption that I enjoy and the pain that I've caused
- 6:29and the indifference in my heart towards the things of God, you
- 6:34would question if I am worthy and I'm here to tell you're not
- 6:37worthy. That's the point.
- 6:39None of us are. All of us are equal in the sight
- 6:43of God, and we're comforted by this truth that salvation is for
- 6:47all people. Do you have salvation today?
- 6:52Do you know for certain I am accepted?
- 6:56My name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life.
- 6:57I have a testimony. I was something.
- 7:00I was someone, but Christ intervened and now I am
- 7:03something and someone else. You don't have to do anything in
- 7:09preparation to encounter the person of Jesus Christ.
- 7:13Listen carefully. You don't become holy to be
- 7:16accepted in Christ. You come to Christ so that he
- 7:19can make you holy. That's the beauty of the gospel.
- 7:23And that's why in part also it's offensive.
- 7:26Again, there are many reasons why it's offensive, though the
- 7:29the essence of the message is gorgeous.
- 7:30It's beautiful, it's wonderful. Why are some people offended?
- 7:34There's got to be something that I do.
- 7:37There's some kind of contribution that I have to
- 7:39make. There's something that I must
- 7:42invest in in order for me to attain this.
- 7:46And the whole message is no, you give up and you look to Christ.
- 7:52But notice this salvation is not just this invisible ticket that
- 7:57you inherit that one day will appear when you give your final
- 8:02breath and you stand before the living God and say, well, on May
- 8:06whatever day, 2000, whatever year, I gave my life to Christ
- 8:10and here I am. My name is in the registry,
- 8:13right? That's not salvation.
- 8:15And Paul wants to clarify that because look at verse 12.
- 8:18This grace that has appeared in verse 12 trains us to renounce
- 8:23ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self controlled,
- 8:28upright and godly lives in the present age.
- 8:32So here's what I want to tell you about this grace.
- 8:34As wonderful as it is, as glorious as it is, as free as it
- 8:38is, if you really accept it, if you really understand it and
- 8:42apply your faith to it, it will change you.
- 8:46It demands change. It transforms you.
- 8:51Look at this. Look at this language verse of
- 8:53it trains us to renounce ungodliness and worldly
- 8:55passions. You've heard many testimonies of
- 8:57people here who are getting baptized saying I'm not perfect,
- 9:01I'm not where I'm supposed to be, but here I am wanting to
- 9:04obey Christ. Yes, that fits with what the
- 9:07Bible says a Christian looks like.
- 9:09It's not about immediate perfection once you profess
- 9:14Christ, but it is about a miraculous instant
- 9:18transformation of your heart direction.
- 9:23Once you taste this grace, now you have this strength and this
- 9:27motivation to say, I want to renounce this ungodliness.
- 9:31I want to walk away from this sin.
- 9:34I no longer want to live in enmity with God.
- 9:38And it trains you, you, you develop in your understanding of
- 9:42who he is, his beauty, his wonders, and that compels you
- 9:47now to move away from sin more and more and more.
- 9:50And here's the beauty of this verse.
- 9:51He trains as a good trainer, is patient, doesn't give up on us
- 9:57so easily, and when we understand who Christ is, he
- 10:01walks with us in this journey the moment you confess Him, and
- 10:05is committed to work in and through you until you meet face
- 10:08to face. It trains us to renounce
- 10:11ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self controlled,
- 10:14upright and godly lives in the present age.
- 10:17Here's another thing to mention. Why are Christians different?
- 10:23If a If a believer is truly a follower of Jesus Christ, there
- 10:26is a difference between them and the world.
- 10:27Those who do not profess Christ, can I tell you the true
- 10:31motivation? If they really understand this
- 10:33book, they really understand the will of God.
- 10:36The reason why they don't go there or do this or act this way
- 10:40is because of grace. It's the mercy of God, the
- 10:46kindness of God, the long-suffering of God that
- 10:49encourages and stimulates holiness.
- 10:53Why do I do what I do? Because I am loved by Him.
- 10:58Why do I do what I do? Because He first loved me and
- 11:01now I can love him. That's the greatest force to
- 11:06true holiness, to true conformity and transformation.
- 11:10The Bible says it's grace. The love in his eyes, the wounds
- 11:14in his hands and feet and the Pierce side.
- 11:17That is the thing before me always that encourages me to
- 11:20live for His glory. So if you're motivated by an
- 11:26ungodly fear, the terror of being judged, Pascal's Wager, I
- 11:33don't even know if this is really real, but just in case it
- 11:35is real, I'm going to live religiously and and I'm not
- 11:38going to lose if I do that, really.
- 11:39So let me just do this. That's not the gospel.
- 11:43The gospel is the grace of God has appeared.
- 11:45You've accepted it. It's working in you and that is
- 11:48the means for you to live a holy life.
- 11:55But there's something else about this gospel in verse 13.
- 11:58It doesn't just train you, it tells you to wait.
- 12:04It encourages you for something to come.
- 12:06Hasn't just appeared in the past on this side of the cross.
- 12:09It also has a message for tomorrow.
- 12:11Look at verse 13. Waiting for our blessed hope,
- 12:15the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus
- 12:18Christ. Where does it say in the Bible
- 12:20that Jesus Christ is God? Well, there's one verse.
- 12:23Memorize it. Christian.
- 12:26Paul called Jesus our great God and Savior.
- 12:31But notice that in the context of the Gospel, Christians who
- 12:34really understand the message, the Christian message, have this
- 12:38hope, have this inner awareness that yes, in the past Christ did
- 12:43something for me. Yes, today he is working in me.
- 12:46But there is something tomorrow that awaits.
- 12:51What's the crescendo of the Christian life?
- 12:54What's the climax of the Christian faith?
- 12:57The appearing of Jesus Christ, the appearing of Jesus Christ.
- 13:03And so when you collect the data in the Old Testament, especially
- 13:06the literature that predicted Christ, then you understand that
- 13:10the mission of God in the flesh is not just to come and judge
- 13:15and rule and clean up this world, the mess that we made,
- 13:19but it's also and primarily to clean you and me up, to cleanse
- 13:25our hearts, to renew us. And that's why he came to die.
- 13:29You know, He could have immediately come and establish
- 13:31his rule in his reign, get rid of all of us and start all over.
- 13:35He could have. Who says he couldn't?
- 13:38But instead, he first comes to you and I as enemies of Him and
- 13:44redeems us and makes us subjects of his Kingdom more than
- 13:47subjects, servants in his Kingdom more than servants,
- 13:50friends in his Kingdom more than friends, children adopted.
- 13:58And he give. Think about this.
- 13:59He gives us the privilege now, in this window of time in human
- 14:03history, to operate as agents of hope and truth, ambassadors of
- 14:09this Kingdom, to tell others, this is for you.
- 14:11This is free. You can come in.
- 14:14I'm not going to. I'm not going to have either.
- 14:16Welcome to the club, and I want to tell you what it says here in
- 14:21verse 14 as a final thought. Who gave himself for us to
- 14:27redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a
- 14:31people for his own possession, who are zealous for good works.
- 14:39It's almost as though he brings it full circle.
- 14:42He talks about grace being manifest, us experiencing that
- 14:47salvation, and then He almost clarifies what the salvation
- 14:52entails. It delivers us from all
- 14:55lawlessness, all not some lawlessness, all lawlessness,
- 15:00and it purifies us unto himself. But here's the most beautiful
- 15:04attribute of the salvation, a people for his own possession.
- 15:09He owns us, which means, which means at least two things.
- 15:14One, when you become a follower of Christ, you surrender your
- 15:17rights, all of them. That's another reason why this
- 15:22gospel is offensive. It demands everything of who you
- 15:25are. It's not intellectual ascent.
- 15:28It's not just you doing something on Sunday morning
- 15:30instead of sleeping in. It's about you saying, if you
- 15:35save me in this way, I gladly surrender everything,
- 15:40everything. And it's not this begrudging,
- 15:45slavish, defeat dragging way of life.
- 15:49It's you entering into the reason why you exist to begin
- 15:52with. So he owns you.
- 15:56So everybody who is, who is baptized today, they made a
- 15:59decision. I let go of my ambitions, my
- 16:03dreams, my ideas of what's good, what's bad, my criteria, my
- 16:08standards. And now I give everything to
- 16:12Christ. He is my Lord.
- 16:13He is the commander in chief of my brief existence on earth, and
- 16:18I gladly do it. On what basis?
- 16:20Because the grace of God has appeared not to reach for His
- 16:23grace, not to win His affection. No, He already showed it to you
- 16:27when your back was turned towards Him.
- 16:32But it also means the second thing, a people for His own
- 16:36possession. He owns you, yes, but He will
- 16:39keep you. He will hold on to you.
- 16:44He will never let you go. If you truly have repented and
- 16:47believed on Christ, there shouldn't be a moment where you
- 16:49doubt Him renouncing you. But what if I fail while you're
- 16:55being trained? What if my heart grows cold?
- 16:59You're being trained. What if I am a Lord and tempted
- 17:04by things that hurt Him? He still owns you and He will
- 17:10work in you day by day and moment by moment.
- 17:15There might be moments where you look at yourself, say I don't
- 17:17recognize myself in a good way, and there might be other times
- 17:20where you say I'm ashamed of myself.
- 17:22Either way, it does not change his ownership of you.
- 17:26He is committed to your conformity.
- 17:28He is committed to holding on to you and nothing snatching you
- 17:31out of his hand. So again, the gospel is not
- 17:35performance enhancement. It's not behavioral
- 17:37modification. It's about you giving your heart
- 17:41and your future to a good and gracious king.
- 17:46And I like how Paul ends here. Yes, a people for his own
- 17:48possession who are zealous for good works.
- 17:52Why am I zealous like this little guy here?
- 17:58Zealous because of this grace. I wonder if you know this grace
- 18:04today. I'm not asking if you know it.
- 18:06Theologically, Satan has the most accurate, robust theology,
- 18:11and he will be tormented forever because of his rebellion.
- 18:15Did you taste it? Is it real to you?
- 18:19As I've been speaking the past 1520 minutes, could your heart
- 18:24actually say Amen? I know what you're talking
- 18:29about, preacher. Or is all of this foreign to
- 18:32you? Is it alien?
- 18:34Is it strange? Is it confusing?
- 18:35Yet you understand the mechanics of it, You understand the core
- 18:39message, but it doesn't resonate.
- 18:43Can I ask you one more question and I'll end it here?
- 18:46Do you sense a little conviction?
- 18:49Is there something in you that says, I may not understand
- 18:52everything fully, but I want it? There's this strange realization
- 18:58that this is indeed true, or at least could be true.
- 19:04May encourage you to do something.
- 19:06Both visitor and frequent visitor.
- 19:08We had people here say that they've sat in these pews for
- 19:11months and years and not really understood it.
- 19:16Do not turn off your conscience. Do not dismiss what may be
- 19:21taking place in your heart. Like Brandon said, something
- 19:28miraculous can happen the moment you just humble yourself.
- 19:32That's it. You need a preacher to walk by
- 19:37you. As valuable as I might be,
- 19:39Christian friends and family, they can point us in the right
- 19:41direction, but it ultimately boils down to this.
- 19:44You humbling yourself and saying, Lord, if this is true,
- 19:48show me. Lord, if this book is of you,
- 19:51show me. Lord, if you truly love me, show
- 19:55me. If you're willing to forgive me,
- 19:58show me. Make this real to me and I'll
- 20:02tell you he will. Let's pray.
- 20:13Thank you, Father, for this incredible service.
- 20:16Thank you for these precious Saints who stood before us
- 20:19today, and more importantly, they stood before you.
- 20:22Help us also leaving this place. Be bold and zealous for good
- 20:26works. We pray even now that there
- 20:29would be a fresh wave of revelation concerning your grace
- 20:31for each of our lives. And Lord, we pray that this
- 20:35Church, by Your grace, would continue to see salvations,
- 20:38people coming to know you, people saying this grace has not
- 20:41just appeared in history, it appeared to me and I'm changed
- 20:45because of it. Lord, we ask that as we
- 20:49celebrate our fellowship, you bless the food, that the joy
- 20:53that's being realized in the hearts of those who made this
- 20:55decision today would be shared in our hearts as well.
- 20:58And Lord, for those who don't know you in this place, move in
- 21:00their hearts. Every means possible was used
- 21:04today to communicate truth. Your ordinances, songs,
- 21:07preaching, people who have testimonies, only you can do the
- 21:14work of conviction. And we pray that it would be
- 21:16real today. Lord, we love you and we honor
- 21:19you with all of our hearts. We give you praise for this
- 21:22time. In Jesus name we pray, Amen and
- 21:25Amen.
