Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to Press Play, where we're going through the less
- 0:02Speaker 1: than stellar history of video game movies. I'm Drew Shulman
- 0:05Speaker 1: with me as always as my beef cheek bro Jason Wynn. Now,
- 0:08Speaker 1: whether you're watching or playing along, it's time to press play.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Good morning, how's it going? Yes, sure is a morning.
- 0:24Speaker 1: It's morning. It's coffee.
- 0:26Speaker 2: What a What a better place to wake up in
- 0:28Speaker 2: the morning than in good old Silent Hill somewhere off
- 0:32Speaker 2: in foggy Pacific Northwest maybe.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Yep, just waking into a loud, horrible siren and then
- 0:38Speaker 1: your entire world goes to hell literally and or purgatory.
- 0:42Speaker 1: It depends on the game. This is a wild series,
- 0:46Speaker 1: this is I'm so I don't think I realized how
- 0:48Speaker 1: excited I was for a Silent Hill episode. I think like,
- 0:51Speaker 1: in the back of my mind, I was like, oh, yeah,
- 0:52Speaker 1: Silent he will be a fun one. But I was like, oh,
- 0:54Speaker 1: I'm pumped for this one.
- 0:56Speaker 2: I was not very familiar, Like I didn't I never
- 0:58Speaker 2: played any of the games. Again, Jason kind of avoids
- 1:01Speaker 2: horror majority of the time. I know it's very prolific, right.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Pyramidhead nurses are like these costumes that people love to
- 1:09Speaker 2: costplay in the video game sphere. I knew it was
- 1:12Speaker 2: a horror game. I thought it was a boring horror game.
- 1:15Speaker 2: If the horror game is anything like this movie, get
- 1:18Speaker 2: me the fuck away from it. Do not come close
- 1:20Speaker 2: to me with that ship. I will punch you in
- 1:22Speaker 2: the face. That was this is awful, this is this
- 1:25Speaker 2: is this was so dramatic for me, this is horrifying.
- 1:30Speaker 1: So I was gonna ask him, like, I know, I
- 1:31Speaker 1: feel like I feel like we had discussed in the past.
- 1:33Speaker 1: You were not like a horror movie like fan, like
- 1:36Speaker 1: you were like like looking out for good horror movies.
- 1:39Speaker 1: But I don't think I've really got a clear like like,
- 1:41Speaker 1: are you the kind of person who can do a
- 1:43Speaker 1: horror movie if need be? Like are you like you're like, oh,
- 1:46Speaker 1: this movie seems to be really good, but it's horror.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Yes, I'll try, yeah if need be, as in like
- 1:51Speaker 2: for this fucking podcast if need be. I suppose I
- 1:57Speaker 2: watched it. I didn't like p mypms, but like, yeah,
- 2:00Speaker 2: it's not fun for me.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Well, it's like the example. So something I think is like,
- 2:04Speaker 1: I know, like mid So mayor was this really big
- 2:07Speaker 1: movie like a year or two ago, and everyone like
- 2:09Speaker 1: was like freaking out how good it was. But it
- 2:10Speaker 1: was a horror movie. And I had a lot of
- 2:12Speaker 1: friends who were not horror movie fans, but for some
- 2:14Speaker 1: reason this movie called to them in a way. We're like, well,
- 2:16Speaker 1: I feel like I have to see it for cultural reasons.
- 2:19Speaker 1: So they like they swallowed their pride and were like, Okay,
- 2:22Speaker 1: I'll do a horror movie even though I hate them
- 2:23Speaker 1: because this movie seems so good. I'm hoping like this
- 2:27Speaker 1: was okay for you, Like I say that this is
- 2:29Speaker 1: midsom No, no, no, I'm just saying, are you the
- 2:32Speaker 1: kind of person who would be like I hate horror movies,
- 2:35Speaker 1: but I'll watch a good movie even though it's horror
- 2:37Speaker 1: outside of Silent Hill, Like did you watch midsom May
- 2:40Speaker 1: or would you watch Midsommer Coin?
- 2:42Speaker 2: Like again, I I I think I don't often watch
- 2:46Speaker 2: like nice movies. It takes an effort for me for
- 2:50Speaker 2: some reason to be like, ah, yes a film tour,
- 2:56Speaker 2: like it's it better be damn good or I have
- 2:58Speaker 2: a real interest in it horror movie and it's not
- 3:02Speaker 2: like the horror movies are bad. I've seen horror movies
- 3:03Speaker 2: in my day, and I and I watch it. I'll
- 3:05Speaker 2: be honest, I actually did quite enjoy this movie after
- 3:08Speaker 2: I got the fucking brunt of traumats and statization done.
- 3:13Speaker 2: But I would never seek this out. I would never
- 3:14Speaker 2: put this on somebody. This is this is awful. I'm sorry.
- 3:18Speaker 1: I the visuals alo oh god, yeah, yeah, the visual
- 3:23Speaker 1: movie or fucking nightmarish.
- 3:26Speaker 2: If this is your stick, No, I don't like you.
- 3:28Speaker 2: I don't think I think I'm gonna declare that.
- 3:31Speaker 1: So I will, so let me say, okay, one, I
- 3:34Speaker 1: really enjoy the Silent Hill games. I feel like I so,
- 3:37Speaker 1: I've really only ever played the second one, like that
- 3:38Speaker 1: was a game I like invested time into. I did
- 3:41Speaker 1: the multiple endings. I like after finishing it, went back
- 3:45Speaker 1: to replay it kind of with the guys of like,
- 3:46Speaker 1: I know what I'm doing this time. I can try
- 3:48Speaker 1: to get some of the secrets or try different things
- 3:50Speaker 1: I missed out on, or even like, yeah, Silent Hill
- 3:53Speaker 1: famously as far back as the first game always has
- 3:55Speaker 1: a joke ending to each of its games, so I
- 3:57Speaker 1: kind of wanted to get the joke ending for Silent
- 3:58Speaker 1: Hill to at some point. Usually they involve dogs or
- 4:02Speaker 1: aliens or both whoa okay, oh yeah, yeah, the one
- 4:06Speaker 1: I know, the one. For the first game, you have
- 4:08Speaker 1: to like pick up an arbitrary item, use it in
- 4:11Speaker 1: at least four different like locations where literally nothing happens,
- 4:14Speaker 1: you know, inventory use and like it doesn't even give
- 4:16Speaker 1: you like a it just says like nothing happens, Like
- 4:18Speaker 1: it just gives you like a prompt, don't even like
- 4:19Speaker 1: a message like equivalent, like trying to use like an
- 4:22Speaker 1: herb on like a lockage goes like no, like just
- 4:25Speaker 1: error sound there you go. But then if you do
- 4:29Speaker 1: use it in those four spots, get to the end
- 4:30Speaker 1: of the game before opening the last door, use it
- 4:32Speaker 1: the last time a UFO shows up and abducts the
- 4:35Speaker 1: main character, and the game ends. That's sick in the sex.
- 4:40Speaker 1: In the second game, you there's like a locked door
- 4:42Speaker 1: you can find at some point, but there's a way,
- 4:43Speaker 1: like if you do a bunch of crazy bullshit, you
- 4:45Speaker 1: can actually unlock this door. And it's just like a
- 4:48Speaker 1: Shiba eu dog sitting at a control panel with a
- 4:50Speaker 1: headset like controlling the whole town, like like the matrix,
- 4:54Speaker 1: and it's just like your character realizing this was all
- 4:57Speaker 1: just some sort of dog's weird torture fantasy like the
- 5:00Speaker 1: fuck I love the I love these jets are so bad.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Honestly thought I hated this movie, like I remember, not
- 5:06Speaker 1: like being super like into it. But I like horror movies.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I've gotten into horror movies over the years, I think,
- 5:13Speaker 1: and I think I just saw this one too early
- 5:15Speaker 1: in my like trying to get into horror movies and
- 5:18Speaker 1: knowing the games better now and horror movies better. I
- 5:21Speaker 1: think this is a good movie, and I know the games,
- 5:24Speaker 1: I know the movies. I'm a fan of both. It's
- 5:26Speaker 1: hard for me.
- 5:27Speaker 2: It's hard for me because on the first half of
- 5:30Speaker 2: the film I was making notes and I was like,
- 5:33Speaker 2: this has got to stop.
- 5:34Speaker 1: This is awful. I hate this project. Oh my god.
- 5:37Speaker 1: And then there's a.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Turn where I went, no, I actually may maybe maybe
- 5:42Speaker 2: maybe I do like this movie. Would I would I
- 5:45Speaker 2: endure that first half again? Or make people like what
- 5:48Speaker 2: I recommend this movie and making them endure that first half.
- 5:51Speaker 1: I truly don't know.
- 5:53Speaker 2: So it's a it's a bit of a fifty to
- 5:54Speaker 2: fifty for me. I think overall it was a pleasant experience.
- 5:57Speaker 2: It's kind of like an X where you're like, Wow, awful,
- 6:01Speaker 2: terrible experience. But then you look back and you're like,
- 6:04Speaker 2: but I learned so much about it's better for me.
- 6:08Speaker 2: But that doesn't mean that I would recommend that experience,
- 6:12Speaker 2: you know what I mean?
- 6:13Speaker 1: I was gonna say, comparing it ex to Silent Hill,
- 6:15Speaker 1: it could be very fitting, uh and dark way of things.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Yeah, because you're like, oh, I don't know if I
- 6:21Speaker 2: would be cheated on again. I don't know if I
- 6:23Speaker 2: could recommend the experience, but I know how to set
- 6:26Speaker 2: boundaries now.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I never want to do that again. I'm glad
- 6:30Speaker 1: it happened because I learned from it, and I learned
- 6:32Speaker 1: that I never wanted to happen again. So to fill
- 6:36Speaker 1: in our listeners if they are not aware of this franchise,
- 6:40Speaker 1: the film, our protagonist rose To Silva takes her adopted
- 6:43Speaker 1: daughter Sharon to the town of Silent Hill in an
- 6:45Speaker 1: attempt to cure her of an ailment. To trust me,
- 6:47Speaker 1: that makes more sense of the film, But Sleepwalking, it's
- 6:50Speaker 1: it's the most bizarre sentence. But I promise you taking
- 6:53Speaker 1: daughter to horribly haunted town was the right move. I think.
- 6:57Speaker 1: I don't know. Yeah, no talk. After a violent car crash,
- 7:02Speaker 1: sharing disappears, and Rose begins on a mission that will
- 7:04Speaker 1: lead her through horrors, fears, a cults of like crazy
- 7:08Speaker 1: religious zealots, and a mysterious ghost town and just, oh
- 7:12Speaker 1: my god. It like just the most traumatic moments you'll
- 7:15Speaker 1: ever witness on camera.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't. I don't think the video games are
- 7:20Speaker 2: too far off from this. Again, not having experienced on
- 7:23Speaker 2: my own, it seems like so. Silent Hill is a
- 7:26Speaker 2: survivor horror game that features the town of Silent Hill.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Released in nineteen ninety nine and published by Konami. It's
- 7:35Speaker 2: got four main installments, Silent one, two, three, and four.
- 7:39Speaker 2: It's a media franchise and like, from what I understand,
- 7:42Speaker 2: that's that's all you kind of need to know about it.
- 7:45Speaker 2: It's got the town and that it always features like
- 7:48Speaker 2: an everyman protagonist as well. That's that's kind of a
- 7:51Speaker 2: staple of all the games from what I understand. Yeah,
- 7:53Speaker 2: everyman town just scary, terrible, its Silent Hill boom.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Yeah, it is that kind of like quintessential, like New
- 8:01Speaker 1: England town, which I feel like ever since Stephen King
- 8:04Speaker 1: got involved in horror, it's just like everything takes place
- 8:07Speaker 1: in like New England. It's just like it's you're either
- 8:10Speaker 1: off in like Portland, Oregon or like Portland, Maine. You're
- 8:14Speaker 1: in one of those two sides of the country, and
- 8:17Speaker 1: horrible nightmare of shit happens in this cute water side village.
- 8:21Speaker 1: That is that is them of If you live in
- 8:23Speaker 1: a town where you can see the ocean, you're probably
- 8:26Speaker 1: gonna get haunted by something eventually.
- 8:29Speaker 2: The ocean is what cause is it? You go as
- 8:32Speaker 2: stir man.
- 8:33Speaker 1: The ocean is like the ocean is a source of
- 8:36Speaker 1: all horrors. I mean, have you seen the ship in
- 8:37Speaker 1: the Marianna's trench some of those deep sea fish? Yeah,
- 8:40Speaker 1: I mean, like I've heard the joke it's the where
- 8:42Speaker 1: God puts his mistakes, and I'm like, yeah, leave him
- 8:44Speaker 1: down there.
- 8:46Speaker 2: That's what the lighthouse is about. Right, that's another arts
- 8:50Speaker 2: art house film theme film.
- 8:53Speaker 1: You're you're adding an accent to the eye somehow. Field
- 8:57Speaker 1: with the eye has a little like a hat on
- 8:59Speaker 1: it instead of a dog. Is that the French horror
- 9:01Speaker 1: for a movie?
- 9:02Speaker 2: Uh?
- 9:03Speaker 1: Yeah, in finn movie that's You're right, Yeah, I always
- 9:08Speaker 1: Oh my god, I don't know. I'm just gonna start
- 9:11Speaker 1: and say, like I like this movie. I'm very unabashedly
- 9:14Speaker 1: like Touched by It. I have a thing for So
- 9:18Speaker 1: here's my thing. I like a horror movie that doesn't
- 9:21Speaker 1: rely on jump scares and uses the horror elements to
- 9:25Speaker 1: tell the story. Like I've seen a few horror movies
- 9:28Speaker 1: where it's like, oh, it's scary because here's some bullshit
- 9:32Speaker 1: that's unrelated to the story that's scary, while we have
- 9:34Speaker 1: the characters try to go on an adventure, or you
- 9:38Speaker 1: have just it's a killer. There's jump scares to kill,
- 9:42Speaker 1: and that's the whole thing is just get away from
- 9:44Speaker 1: the killer until you can stop the killer or oh, surprise,
- 9:46Speaker 1: the killer survives, like every fucking horror movie. I don't
- 9:50Speaker 1: dislike those horror movies, but they're kind of just like
- 9:52Speaker 1: you can sort of see everything as it comes, Like
- 9:54Speaker 1: I don't feel surprised anymore, like they have to try
- 9:56Speaker 1: extra hard to surprise you by doing stupid shit.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I will say, among superhero movies and horror movies,
- 10:02Speaker 2: these are the two like film genres that are like
- 10:05Speaker 2: the most trophy and follow the formula formula on the tee.
- 10:09Speaker 2: This movie is no exception. We start off with like
- 10:12Speaker 2: very normal circumstances. It's two parents, one of which is
- 10:16Speaker 2: Sean Bean. We always like to shoutout young actors crazy crazy.
- 10:20Speaker 2: He survives the movie. I forgot about that, the only
- 10:25Speaker 2: one essentially, Yeah, yeah, one hundred everyone's dead. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 10:31Speaker 2: I guess, so we'll get to it. It seems like
- 10:33Speaker 2: he did his filming in a week. I also want
- 10:36Speaker 2: to note that he could have done it in a
- 10:38Speaker 2: fucking week. He probably will. Yeah, he has like no
- 10:42Speaker 2: screen time. He's basically just like worried worried husband and
- 10:45Speaker 2: then sits there while a cop talks to him. I
- 10:48Speaker 2: was about to say, like he does minimal acting. He
- 10:51Speaker 2: probably wears like probably the same outfit. He was there
- 10:54Speaker 2: for about a week and if he wasn't, Yeah, he
- 10:56Speaker 2: raked them over the coals over money, which is good
- 10:59Speaker 2: for him. I'm happy to get you.
- 11:01Speaker 1: I gotta say, I think the I think the only acting,
- 11:04Speaker 1: like really like acting scene he has is like when
- 11:06Speaker 1: he gets on the phone to call like the library
- 11:08Speaker 1: for like records. Yeah, and he's just yelling at the
- 11:10Speaker 1: poor woman on the phone. It's like that this is
- 11:12Speaker 1: only a moting.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Because every other scene he has is just where's Rose
- 11:18Speaker 2: Rose come home? It's supposed to be American, but it's
- 11:23Speaker 2: still Yeah, it comes through fucking bor mirror.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Yeah, and he was. He was a last minute edition
- 11:28Speaker 1: to the movie, like initially apparently the original true, oh,
- 11:32Speaker 1: but apparently the original script he was in it, Like
- 11:35Speaker 1: there are the husband characters there at the beginning, and
- 11:37Speaker 1: they just drop him completely from the movie. After the
- 11:40Speaker 1: they get to Silent Hill, and then the script the
- 11:42Speaker 1: script came back with a note of like, there's no
- 11:44Speaker 1: men in this movie because there were zero male characters
- 11:48Speaker 1: for the husband in at one point.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Good honestly could which again, yes, Sean Bean doesn't do
- 11:52Speaker 2: much in this movie, exactly not necessary. But it starts
- 11:56Speaker 2: off so Sean Bean's a concerned parent. There's another concern
- 11:58Speaker 2: parent Rose. Their child is omening out right. Their child's
- 12:02Speaker 2: been a freaking little weirdo for some reason. The mother's
- 12:06Speaker 2: reaction to her freaking out is she keeps talking about
- 12:08Speaker 2: this town that was burned, abandoned, terrible accidents happening, and
- 12:14Speaker 2: no one lives there anymore. It's off in the fucking boonies.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Let's road trip. She obviously needs to go there. Let's
- 12:20Speaker 2: take her off her meds. Something that Sean Bean says
- 12:23Speaker 2: the psychiatrists are bullshit. Let's take her to the scary
- 12:26Speaker 2: fucking town that no one lives anymore.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Saw being carried all the right answers here of like, hey,
- 12:31Speaker 1: let's maybe go about this the right way, like, yeah,
- 12:34Speaker 1: oh cool, you found the town of Silent Hill. Let's
- 12:36Speaker 1: keep reading up on it a bit. This seems very
- 12:39Speaker 1: weird and strange. Maybe we should look a little more
- 12:41Speaker 1: into this boring search.
- 12:44Speaker 2: He literally he yelps it, and they're like, fuck this
- 12:47Speaker 2: one star it's awful.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Yeah what one star murdered?
- 12:51Speaker 2: Yeah from the grave, would not recommend I went to
- 12:58Speaker 2: this town, got murdered by a horrible thing with a
- 13:00Speaker 2: giant sword, I know, trapped her eternally as a cursed soul.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Would not recommend one star. Yeah, the drive is pretty smooth.
- 13:09Speaker 1: One nice thing at the end. Just in case, honey,
- 13:11Speaker 1: why did you take her kid off of drugs?
- 13:13Speaker 2: She's gotta golf. It's like a Stranger Things episode. Man,
- 13:15Speaker 2: it is so fucking yeah, it's it's ridiculous.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Like again, like the idea that it's like something's like
- 13:20Speaker 1: fucked up with her kind of thing, like there's more
- 13:21Speaker 1: to this than just like right again, the town's calling
- 13:24Speaker 1: to her, there's some sort of supernatural bullshit going on,
- 13:27Speaker 1: But you're right, like you could have at least like, okay,
- 13:29Speaker 1: let's like take a day to plan this out for sure.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Cause again, even from like the husband's point of view,
- 13:34Speaker 1: like initially like okay, all this haunted shade, it burnt down,
- 13:37Speaker 1: it's abandoned. It's like, okay, like spooky, but none of
- 13:40Speaker 1: them I don't believe currently believe in ghosts. So it's like, okay, cool,
- 13:43Speaker 1: we drive through together on a nice sunny day, and
- 13:46Speaker 1: we like schedule everything and we like make a thing
- 13:49Speaker 1: out of it. We don't just run off there in
- 13:51Speaker 1: the middle of the fucking night and act like a
- 13:54Speaker 1: psycho freaking like the what she runs from the cop like.
- 13:56Speaker 2: What, yep, it's it's it's it's all the horror movie
- 14:00Speaker 2: set up, right, Like yeah, And I'll be honest, I'm
- 14:03Speaker 2: not a parent. I made notes of that. I don't
- 14:06Speaker 2: think i'd be a very good parent because this would
- 14:08Speaker 2: not be my reaction. I drew dragons and like wolf monsters.
- 14:14Speaker 1: As a kid.
- 14:15Speaker 2: If my parents said he's obviously got an issue, we've
- 14:19Speaker 2: got to take him to the wolf sanctuary, I think
- 14:23Speaker 2: it wouldn't be bad if CPS was called on them
- 14:26Speaker 2: for that reason. Sometimes kids, kids are weird. Kids are weird.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Get the kids are fucking weird, and that's fine. I like,
- 14:32Speaker 1: I again don't have kids myself. I've worked with kids
- 14:34Speaker 1: for years. Like, kids are weird.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Yeah, but she immediately regrets her decision, and she should
- 14:39Speaker 2: because yes, the second she gets into town, it's like
- 14:43Speaker 2: ash is actively falling down. And then the first thing
- 14:48Speaker 2: that happens is she gets into a car wreck, she
- 14:50Speaker 2: loses a kid, and then a fucking armless, faceless flesh
- 14:55Speaker 2: zombie approaches her. And then what is it her action, know,
- 15:00Speaker 2: the cops reaction that's like stand down, put your hands up.
- 15:03Speaker 1: It's like, ohkay, yeah, this is this is so Yeah,
- 15:05Speaker 1: she's lost her daughter, She's been in the town a
- 15:07Speaker 1: little bit, kind of got like, I think this is
- 15:09Speaker 1: a before this. We also have the weird like burnt children,
- 15:13Speaker 1: baby monsters that she has to get chased by for
- 15:15Speaker 1: a bit, just the idea that like, she has seen
- 15:17Speaker 1: the horrors of this town and knows there's something that's
- 15:19Speaker 1: a little bit extra fucked up here. And then the
- 15:22Speaker 1: cop who just tries to arrest her, Oh, can I
- 15:24Speaker 1: just please bring up this this moment where she like
- 15:26Speaker 1: points out the cop as bleeding uh, and she's like, oh, yeah,
- 15:29Speaker 1: I took a pretty hard spill on the way here
- 15:31Speaker 1: on my bike and then I walked the rest of
- 15:32Speaker 1: the way. It's like there was a moment where it's like,
- 15:35Speaker 1: I know, the reveal of the end is that they're
- 15:38Speaker 1: dead the whole time, like the whole thing. When she
- 15:40Speaker 1: gets back to the house and she's like it's like
- 15:42Speaker 1: still silent Hill esque fog, and like, oh, okay, her
- 15:45Speaker 1: husband and her can't see each other.
- 15:46Speaker 2: That's interesting, So you thought they were all dead the
- 15:48Speaker 2: whole time.
- 15:50Speaker 1: I think the implication of at least what I understood,
- 15:53Speaker 1: and I think the games it's based on the first
- 15:55Speaker 1: game heavily, and I think that's the premise there as well,
- 15:57Speaker 1: is the car accident slash her bike accident are both
- 16:02Speaker 1: fatal and silent. He'll kind of acts as like this.
- 16:06Speaker 1: I think in the first game people believe it was
- 16:08Speaker 1: a metaphor for hell. I think it's supposed to be purgatory.
- 16:10Speaker 1: It's kind of this in between place where you're like
- 16:12Speaker 1: unfinished business type thing.
- 16:14Speaker 2: In the Wikipedia synopsis, they said that it was a
- 16:16Speaker 2: purgatory to mention. So they're like stuck there is what
- 16:20Speaker 2: is the education I got? I could totally because again
- 16:22Speaker 2: it's a horror movie troupe to be like they were
- 16:25Speaker 2: dead the whole time. It was a dog's dream. She'd
- 16:29Speaker 2: be eating the stream because they're terrible dog breeds. I
- 16:33Speaker 2: also don't know why I started sounding like old Obi
- 16:35Speaker 2: wan Kenobi. I'm really I'm really sorry for that voice.
- 16:37Speaker 1: But I love she moves with a bad breed. We
- 16:41Speaker 1: sort of ranking breeds here. I have thoughts.
- 16:44Speaker 2: I don't know, they're evil and they always have bad intentions.
- 16:49Speaker 1: They're a strange breed. I'll give you that one, though.
- 16:51Speaker 2: I've never met one in real life. I'm just bullshiting.
- 16:54Speaker 2: But uh, yes, Andrew, yes, and uh but yeah, I
- 17:00Speaker 2: thought the implication was they were stuck in a dimension.
- 17:02Speaker 2: But I totally could believe that they were dead.
- 17:04Speaker 1: That hell. Yeah, I think it's it's like enough, it's
- 17:06Speaker 1: up to interpretation enough. But I think the idea is
- 17:08Speaker 1: that they are no longer on the mortal coil. And
- 17:10Speaker 1: I think the idea of the hinting at like the
- 17:13Speaker 1: accidents for both of them kind of thing is like
- 17:15Speaker 1: they didn't make it really.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Jason doesn't think a lot during a movie, and so
- 17:20Speaker 2: that's my bad.
- 17:21Speaker 1: So there's like I looked this up afterwards and I
- 17:23Speaker 1: couldn't find anyone really talking about it. But I had
- 17:25Speaker 1: a really weird furial watch in this movie. So again,
- 17:29Speaker 1: like I said, I really enjoyed the second game. That
- 17:31Speaker 1: was when I played the most, and a big thing
- 17:33Speaker 1: with the Silent Hill of the second game, and to
- 17:35Speaker 1: my understanding the first game does it as well, and
- 17:37Speaker 1: I'm assuming it carries on from there, is that all
- 17:40Speaker 1: of the monsters tend to be representations of something the
- 17:44Speaker 1: person being haunted is like connected to specifically, Like I know,
- 17:50Speaker 1: the second game also ends with this like crazy fight
- 17:53Speaker 1: scene with like a character in like a hospital bed,
- 17:55Speaker 1: and the whole idea is like it's the it's the
- 17:56Speaker 1: main characters reeling with the death of somebody or someone
- 17:59Speaker 1: on their deathbed. So the idea of like approaching it
- 18:02Speaker 1: and accepting it and seeing this person in a state
- 18:04Speaker 1: of about to die is like the thing that is
- 18:06Speaker 1: haunting them, so it manifests as the thing they're fighting,
- 18:10Speaker 1: and there's a lot of weird imagery with the creatures.
- 18:12Speaker 1: We get that, like, yes, we kind of can draw
- 18:14Speaker 1: some connections to like Sharon and the kid's whole story,
- 18:18Speaker 1: like a lot of it ties back to her traumas,
- 18:21Speaker 1: but like we also have Rose who is a mother
- 18:25Speaker 1: who adopted a daughter versus having her own daughter, so
- 18:28Speaker 1: like there might be some implication there issues and then
- 18:33Speaker 1: a lot of things like just like nurses like blindly
- 18:37Speaker 1: affecting her the first the monster you're referring to, the
- 18:40Speaker 1: one that cop tries to just like, you know, arrest
- 18:42Speaker 1: because that's what you do when you see a horrible
- 18:44Speaker 1: fleshbag creature. It has this weird where it's like shit
- 18:50Speaker 1: and the answers just starts shooting. But there's this weird
- 18:53Speaker 1: design choice with it, and I get, I get the
- 18:54Speaker 1: creepy factor, but like the fact that it's kind of
- 18:56Speaker 1: walking where it looks feels like it's almost to hold
- 18:58Speaker 1: its legs together, and it seems to sort of just
- 19:00Speaker 1: be bleeding from between its legs. Like there's kind of
- 19:03Speaker 1: like a I don't know, like I'm getting very miscarriage,
- 19:07Speaker 1: stuck in the hospital trying to deal with having a
- 19:09Speaker 1: child vibes off the monsters, you know what.
- 19:11Speaker 2: I was gonna say, I didn't get all of that
- 19:13Speaker 2: from this from the design. So that's a bad point.
- 19:15Speaker 2: But if if you saw those things.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Thank you again. It's one of those things where it's like,
- 19:22Speaker 1: was this the actual intent by the author or is
- 19:24Speaker 1: it just us as me as a viewer slash us
- 19:26Speaker 1: as a viewer reading more into the imagery, you know what,
- 19:29Speaker 1: give them the point for it anyways, for sure.
- 19:31Speaker 2: And then I'm gonna take a point away because the
- 19:33Speaker 2: whole edict of her getting into this place in the
- 19:37Speaker 2: first place.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Yeah, no, she's an idiot. She's an idiot. Bad mom.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Oh yeah no. That is like the my biggest pet
- 19:45Speaker 1: peeve with horror movies is how often someone's doing a
- 19:47Speaker 1: thing where it's like, just why would you do that? Yeah, Like,
- 19:50Speaker 1: given given the choices before you, why is this the
- 19:53Speaker 1: choice you are making? This is stupid. I cannot fathom
- 19:56Speaker 1: a world where this was the right choice. And the
- 19:59Speaker 1: rare time of horror movie he doesn't do that. I'm like,
- 20:01Speaker 1: you know what, Yeah, kudos, you made your character the
- 20:04Speaker 1: smart one, dude. And it just keeps on rolling.
- 20:06Speaker 2: I think for fro a minute, like I think, I
- 20:09Speaker 2: think she gets into the town around the twenty five
- 20:13Speaker 2: thirty minute mark, and then until like, until like the
- 20:16Speaker 2: forty seven minute mark.
- 20:17Speaker 1: I was upset.
- 20:20Speaker 2: I was I was upset at the decisions, like the
- 20:23Speaker 2: decisions to get in there, the decisions for all of
- 20:25Speaker 2: them to like talk to just a random lady in
- 20:28Speaker 2: the middle of this ashen fallen street. And she looks
- 20:31Speaker 2: like a fucking witch. She doesn't viewers. When I say
- 20:34Speaker 2: she looks like a witch, I don't mean that she
- 20:36Speaker 2: is a woman who is bad or or something like that.
- 20:40Speaker 2: I mean she looks like she's been in the swamp
- 20:42Speaker 2: for five hundred years, eating and stirring up eyes of newts.
- 20:46Speaker 2: And they're like, hey, do you need help? Can I
- 20:49Speaker 2: help you?
- 20:50Speaker 1: Shoot her?
- 20:51Speaker 2: I'm sorry, just shoot her. I'm not a violent person.
- 20:56Speaker 2: I would I don't own a gun. I would never
- 20:58Speaker 2: own a gun. Up shooter her shoot.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Are so fast? Oh yeah, an question? Oh yeah? Like again,
- 21:05Speaker 1: like I think we gave the caveat in neither of
- 21:08Speaker 1: us are parents, but like there has to be a
- 21:10Speaker 1: line at some point, even when it comes to your child,
- 21:13Speaker 1: where it's like, oh no, this is clearly a supernatural,
- 21:17Speaker 1: non normal scenario. Clearly the thing I'm chasing is not
- 21:21Speaker 1: my child, because my child would not be doing the
- 21:23Speaker 1: things that are happening here. There is something horribly wrong.
- 21:26Speaker 1: I need to figure shit out before I just continue
- 21:29Speaker 1: running in aimlessly.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Oh that's a great thought process that you had. That
- 21:33Speaker 2: was like very reasoned and very like.
- 21:37Speaker 1: True.
- 21:38Speaker 2: If it was you, if it was the closest thing
- 21:40Speaker 2: I have to a child, which is my dog Bishop.
- 21:42Speaker 2: If that ran into there and I saw this slug
- 21:45Speaker 2: monster that had like a human like features, no arms,
- 21:48Speaker 2: no face, and was like screeching in my I'm out,
- 21:52Speaker 2: I'm out see you later.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Yeah, no, fuck off, exactly same thing like again, love
- 21:57Speaker 1: you to death. You walk into the woods and a
- 21:59Speaker 1: bear attack, There's very little I can do at that
- 22:02Speaker 1: point except run and hopefully I survive as well.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Wait a minute, I was talking about supernatural demon monsters.
- 22:08Speaker 1: You went a real bear against you. Off, You're done.
- 22:10Speaker 2: You're dad key, very killable.
- 22:14Speaker 1: We know to wear wolf attacked. Oh you've said it.
- 22:19Speaker 2: You said how you feel about me.
- 22:21Speaker 1: I couldn't fight a bear would do the same, and
- 22:25Speaker 1: I would appreciate.
- 22:26Speaker 2: I'd get a shotgun, you know, if you would just.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Have one ready to geotgun change things. This is all
- 22:34Speaker 1: We don't have guns.
- 22:34Speaker 2: This is an analogy again, where you know, I've run
- 22:38Speaker 2: into the woods. You know that the bear's standing guard.
- 22:40Speaker 2: Because it's a video game situation as well. You're not
- 22:43Speaker 2: gonna You're not gonna come.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Back for me. That's a bear. That's a normal thing.
- 22:46Speaker 1: It changes the parameters. If I had access to a shotgun,
- 22:49Speaker 1: I would, I would, I would.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Say it kills Harambe for a kid. You wouldn't Harambe
- 22:54Speaker 2: this fucking thing for me? Are you serious? That's a bear,
- 22:56Speaker 2: that's I mean, it's killable. It's a mortal oil.
- 23:00Speaker 1: If I if I had a way of kille it.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Fine. We're moving on, par moving on to more awful things.
- 23:11Speaker 2: From like from like minute forty two to like fifty two,
- 23:15Speaker 2: I was dying. I was dying in my like there's
- 23:18Speaker 2: a just the worst images. Oh god, yeah, oh my god.
- 23:23Speaker 2: It was awful. Man, Like I've seen again, I've seen Pyramidhead,
- 23:27Speaker 2: I've seen these nurses.
- 23:28Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 23:28Speaker 2: If the images get this visceral in the video games,
- 23:32Speaker 2: I can't imagine. And even if they did, like low
- 23:35Speaker 2: poly so I can't imagine they look this bad.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Yeah, they basically get like almost as bad as this.
- 23:42Speaker 1: But also we're talking PS one, PS two polygraphics, like
- 23:45Speaker 1: you're not getting much detail on the skin there.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Okay, And by bad I mean like the set design.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Whoever like designed this, they obviously meant to be disturbing
- 23:53Speaker 2: and awful and horrible. It's very good from a movie perspective,
- 23:58Speaker 2: I think of the practical effects. Maybe because some of
- 24:01Speaker 2: the CGI is quite good. It almost looks like a
- 24:03Speaker 2: mix of CG. That monster I mentioned at the beginning, Yeah,
- 24:06Speaker 2: I believe is CGI, but it might be a mix
- 24:08Speaker 2: of the two. It's very good for the time.
- 24:12Speaker 1: I can say right now that if anything CGI, to
- 24:15Speaker 1: my understanding, was on top of an actor, so like
- 24:17Speaker 1: there was someone in the thing, they may have a
- 24:19Speaker 1: cgied up to get the details. Like yeah, like yeah, for.
- 24:23Speaker 2: The time, very good CGI, very disturbing images. It starts
- 24:27Speaker 2: off with Rose, I think getting into a school. She
- 24:30Speaker 2: starts getting some clues which we will the movie alludes
- 24:33Speaker 2: to and we will allude to. In this school setting,
- 24:36Speaker 2: while looking for a child, there's like a flayed fucking
- 24:39Speaker 2: skin bag person like they're like they're like spread out
- 24:45Speaker 2: in this oh for the stall, but they're still alive.
- 24:48Speaker 2: And then there's other things that happened. I blacked out.
- 24:50Speaker 2: It was so awful. There was like babies like running
- 24:54Speaker 2: after them and ah, it.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Was so bad. The horror elements in this movie are
- 25:01Speaker 1: just like so gross and uncomfortable. Like everything feels so
- 25:07Speaker 1: like intentionally disgusting and bad. Yeah, like even those like
- 25:11Speaker 1: the one thing I will say to see you guys
- 25:12Speaker 1: a little ify on of those bug things we keep
- 25:14Speaker 1: seeing in the movie. Yeah, yeah, and like we finally
- 25:17Speaker 1: got a close up of one and it's like like
- 25:18Speaker 1: human face kind of thing, and it's like, oh, they're horrible.
- 25:22Speaker 1: It's just like.
- 25:25Speaker 2: I'm getting anxious talking about it right now now.
- 25:27Speaker 1: I feel you. I'm I hate bugs is my worst thing.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Bugs are the ones that I canderstand so like making
- 25:32Speaker 1: bugs worse, like just fuck you.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Yeah to it to its point, it's probably a good thing.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Horror movies, psychological thrillers, et cetera, et cetera. Like I know,
- 25:43Speaker 2: as not a horror fan, that horror is like this
- 25:45Speaker 2: incredibly broad genre of film. There's so many different forms.
- 25:48Speaker 2: There's jump scares, there's monster serial killers. You mentioned body
- 25:53Speaker 2: horror is a gore, you know, like this soft franchise,
- 25:58Speaker 2: And it's such like this film is such a beautiful
- 26:00Speaker 2: way to explore this right, like to engage in adrenaline
- 26:04Speaker 2: knowing that this is not a real situation where we
- 26:07Speaker 2: are being harmed. Like exploring images, exploring sound, the combination
- 26:11Speaker 2: of the two. It's really fascinating and really interesting. And
- 26:16Speaker 2: this is my first foray until I think the genre
- 26:18Speaker 2: that's like disturbing, right, Like there's just some stuff that
- 26:21Speaker 2: is like creepy to make you feel off.
- 26:23Speaker 1: It's gross.
- 26:24Speaker 2: I don't like it. Fuck it, fuck you. I it's
- 26:27Speaker 2: not good. Wow, this is awful and I really didn't enjoy,
- 26:31Speaker 2: Like for fifteen to twenty minutes, I was like, ah,
- 26:35Speaker 2: this is horrific, truly, so fuck you. If I don't
- 26:40Speaker 2: like to yup people's yum, if you're like, hey, this
- 26:42Speaker 2: is what I like, I'd be like, what why how'd
- 26:46Speaker 2: you get there? Bud go pick some flowers, enjoy colors
- 26:51Speaker 2: and stuff like that. That's wow, it's a lot. I'm
- 26:54Speaker 2: breathing like really hard right now.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Ye know, I will so again. I'm a big fan
- 26:59Speaker 1: of horror movie. I feel like I haven't enjoyed a
- 27:02Speaker 1: good horror movie in a long time because so many
- 27:04Speaker 1: do are either like you said, they're either the jump scare,
- 27:06Speaker 1: kind or like Silent Hill for me, really rides a
- 27:10Speaker 1: fine line. Maybe it's I give it a leeway because
- 27:12Speaker 1: I was so such a fan of the game, but
- 27:14Speaker 1: generally the other side of horror that isn't jump scare,
- 27:17Speaker 1: but it's just like overly gory or like disturbing or gross. Essentially, Yeah,
- 27:22Speaker 1: just for the sake of visceral reaction, I find to
- 27:25Speaker 1: be a bit too much. Like I said, I think
- 27:27Speaker 1: I've read into this one a little bit because of
- 27:28Speaker 1: my knowledge of the games that I'm seeing imagery. So like,
- 27:31Speaker 1: it's gross, but it's supposed to distill how gross it
- 27:33Speaker 1: makes you feel me inside, Like I kind I think
- 27:36Speaker 1: I'm being an apologist for this one. But again, I've
- 27:39Speaker 1: also seen way worse than this, unfortunately in the horror genre.
- 27:44Speaker 1: So as gross as this one is, you're not wrong.
- 27:46Speaker 1: It's definitely on the somewhat lighter end of the gross spectrum.
- 27:50Speaker 1: But also, like, like I love horror, this is not
- 27:53Speaker 1: the horror I tend to like lean towards. This is
- 27:55Speaker 1: like as far as I'll go in this direction, usually yeah, yeah,
- 27:58Speaker 1: bad points for the horror. Yeah, I'll give you that one.
- 28:01Speaker 2: That's how I feel inside the whole time.
- 28:03Speaker 1: I was just like, oh, yeah, this is this is
- 28:05Speaker 1: one of those ones too where it's like I'm like,
- 28:06Speaker 1: at the end of the day, I'm like finishing this,
- 28:08Speaker 1: Like you know, I'm I'm glad I rewatched this movie,
- 28:11Speaker 1: and I'm thinking, like, of all the whole all the
- 28:12Speaker 1: things I'm making Jason rewatch, I'm sorry about this one.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Not because it's a bad video game movie, because it's
- 28:17Speaker 1: a horrible thing to experience.
- 28:21Speaker 2: I think that's the general vibe.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Yeah, one of these days we'll hit a movie where
- 28:25Speaker 1: we're both actually, you actually enjoyed as much as I
- 28:27Speaker 1: do for once.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Yeah, we did that with Pokemon.
- 28:30Speaker 1: We did that. Yeah. I was gonna say the next
- 28:32Speaker 1: one on the list that I can think of as
- 28:33Speaker 1: like Detective Pikachu Baby, we should do that again.
- 28:37Speaker 2: We should just do Pokemon two thousand and just do
- 28:39Speaker 2: that again.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Anyway, maybe that'll maybe that'll be the Christmas gift to ourselves.
- 28:43Speaker 1: We'll see. We just keep watching all the Pokemon.
- 28:45Speaker 2: This has become a Pokemon movie podcast. We're watching all
- 28:48Speaker 2: thirty four, the Celebi one, the new one with Zarud
- 28:52Speaker 2: and it's just a boy being a monkey. Uh.
- 28:56Speaker 1: I forget how many i've actually watched. There was a
- 28:59Speaker 1: I think we've discussed before, but for the listeners. There
- 29:01Speaker 1: was a week once where I had taken the week
- 29:03Speaker 1: off work and my brothers and I we supposed to
- 29:05Speaker 1: go on a road trip somewhere for like a few days,
- 29:07Speaker 1: and then that fell through. So I was like, I
- 29:09Speaker 1: legit have like nine days with nothing to do while
- 29:12Speaker 1: my wife works the entire time, and I think was
- 29:14Speaker 1: also on a girl's trip, so like, I even had
- 29:15Speaker 1: the nights to myself, and I had like no plans
- 29:18Speaker 1: and I just ended up like I picked my copy
- 29:19Speaker 1: of Pokemon Soul Silver at the local walmart. It was
- 29:23Speaker 1: franch I had to go back to his framelish version,
- 29:24Speaker 1: fucking Quebec my bad. And then I just sat there
- 29:27Speaker 1: and shiny Hunted Alujah while watching all of the original movies,
- 29:31Speaker 1: or up to that point, all the movies.
- 29:33Speaker 2: I think that's how long it takes to shiny hunt
- 29:35Speaker 2: Alukia as well.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Yep, God damn. I did finally get it around the
- 29:39Speaker 1: fourth or fifth movie, and then I started shiny hunting
- 29:41Speaker 1: a gear Retina and I'm still fucking I still have
- 29:43Speaker 1: the chartters of my thing on the on the softa
- 29:45Speaker 1: reset spot.
- 29:46Speaker 2: My god, I haven't got them yet. Yeah, bastard, Good
- 29:49Speaker 2: luck to you, buddy. Now, this movie continues with the
- 29:57Speaker 2: awful horror movie tropes, a lot clues alluding to, like
- 30:01Speaker 2: the the plot twist at the end. Again, just witchy ladies,
- 30:04Speaker 2: just continuing on. They just keep meeting witchy ladies and
- 30:07Speaker 2: they're like, can I help you?
- 30:09Speaker 1: Do you know where my child is?
- 30:10Speaker 2: And they're like on the fourth nights?
- 30:15Speaker 1: Oh god? Yeah, Like every fucking person they meet in
- 30:18Speaker 1: this movie is just like who the fuck are these people?
- 30:21Speaker 2: Like there's there's like a church siren that comes on,
- 30:25Speaker 2: so you finally see other people in the town because
- 30:27Speaker 2: you're like, what the fuck is wrong with this town?
- 30:29Speaker 1: There's nobody here for the number of people that are there.
- 30:31Speaker 1: We finally get to the church and it's like this
- 30:33Speaker 1: full fucking community. I'm like, yeah, telling me she's been
- 30:35Speaker 1: running around this town for this long. That's like we
- 30:38Speaker 1: see a good chunk of the town. It's like maybe
- 30:40Speaker 1: like four city blocks in either direction. It's not a
- 30:42Speaker 1: big town. It's like a small, little like the town
- 30:45Speaker 1: you drive food doesn't even have a gas station kind
- 30:47Speaker 1: of small. Yeah, Like there's no way she's been in
- 30:50Speaker 1: this town this long, running around doing this much shit,
- 30:53Speaker 1: and not a single person's made an appearance.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Yeah, and then they're all like ash and clad. They
- 30:58Speaker 2: look like they've never seen the sun for like ten years.
- 31:01Speaker 2: There's a reason for all of that.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, well then, in fact, I don't think they
- 31:04Speaker 1: have seen this on for ten plus years for sure.
- 31:08Speaker 2: And then pyramid Head comes out and he skins a
- 31:11Speaker 2: person alive and we see it. That was my breaking
- 31:15Speaker 2: point where I was like, I don't know if I
- 31:17Speaker 2: could have watched this movie. I don't know if I could.
- 31:19Speaker 2: You know, like, it's it's an effect, and you can
- 31:21Speaker 2: definitely tell them the effect.
- 31:22Speaker 1: It's. Yeah, it's one of the more obvious c G moments.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Oh god, I have like chills down my whole fucking
- 31:28Speaker 2: spine right now. It is awful. It is terrible, Oh
- 31:31Speaker 2: my god to watch. And I watched it twice because
- 31:34Speaker 2: I was like, is that really just what happened?
- 31:36Speaker 1: Ah God, why would you rewind it?
- 31:39Speaker 2: Because because when I watch these, I'm also taking notes,
- 31:42Speaker 2: so like I'm looking, oh, yeah, I'm like, suit.
- 31:45Speaker 1: He took off that person.
- 31:46Speaker 2: He just like stripped them naked. No, he stripped them naked. First,
- 31:49Speaker 2: and then he stripped their skin from their.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Fec because we needed to really prove that he could
- 31:53Speaker 1: do it in one shot. Regardless. Oh yeah, it's so terrible.
- 31:56Speaker 2: And then the first clue that something's amiss is wrong,
- 31:59Speaker 2: So like the husband and makes it to the town.
- 32:01Speaker 2: He's talking to his local cop who's like, yeah, this
- 32:03Speaker 2: sounds fucked, but he's like talking to this lady and
- 32:06Speaker 2: he's like in a building and it's sunshiny, there's sun,
- 32:10Speaker 2: there's children walking about. This lady's like I don't remember
- 32:14Speaker 2: what she says, but anyway, she's talking to him, and
- 32:15Speaker 2: she's a normal, not ash clad person. That's like every
- 32:19Speaker 2: morning when the children go to recess, we we we
- 32:22Speaker 2: like to strip the skins off of the frogs, you know,
- 32:25Speaker 2: like bullshit like that. She's not a weird It's what
- 32:27Speaker 2: I'm trying to say exactly.
- 32:29Speaker 1: It's it's we were seeing that like, oh shit, the
- 32:32Speaker 1: entire world is normal except for Silent Hill, and specifically
- 32:35Speaker 1: the version of Silent Hill that she is in.
- 32:37Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, what's the disparity here?
- 32:40Speaker 1: Yeah, Like that big moment I think when they at
- 32:42Speaker 1: first like kind of like reveal that something is like
- 32:43Speaker 1: super like oh, like we're blatantly admitting it to the audience.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Is when he thinks he feels her in the school
- 32:50Speaker 1: and he runs back in, right yeah, and he's like,
- 32:53Speaker 1: I felt her, she was here. I can like smell
- 32:55Speaker 1: her perfume, and it's like, well, she was there, and
- 32:57Speaker 1: you're there now, and like the color grading is different
- 32:59Speaker 1: and you can't see each other. There's clearly something going
- 33:02Speaker 1: on here, but like we're not gonna say it yet
- 33:04Speaker 1: or ever. Really, yeah, we're just gonna keep alluding to it.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Alluding to it, right yeah, yeah, yeah, And and more
- 33:10Speaker 2: things happen here, there gets to be the climax, right, which, yes,
- 33:15Speaker 2: I will say, horrible things have happened to me. I'm like, ah,
- 33:20Speaker 2: this entire time sitting by my laptop, two cool things
- 33:23Speaker 2: do happen, I believe. So our two protagonists will say
- 33:27Speaker 2: that the cop and Rose Camember.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Her name it's Rose, and I'm gonna look at her
- 33:31Speaker 1: name civil or something like that, civil officer, Sybil, officer Sybil. Yeah.
- 33:36Speaker 2: They now can talk to these people in the community
- 33:39Speaker 2: and they're like, yeah, this is a terrible place and
- 33:41Speaker 2: this is what happens. And they're like, well, I'm gonna
- 33:44Speaker 2: look for my daughter. Uh, this is apparently where the
- 33:46Speaker 2: demon lives. I guess, so they yes.
- 33:49Speaker 1: There's a demon.
- 33:50Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a switch. Now from like this is awful,
- 33:54Speaker 2: this is happening to us. Now we are going to
- 33:57Speaker 2: take command of the situation. And it's even at the
- 34:00Speaker 2: point where Sybil gets detained by the bad guys, Rose
- 34:04Speaker 2: is by herself. She gets to the basement where this
- 34:07Speaker 2: demon is supposed to be and there's like there's these
- 34:10Speaker 2: nurses that are activated by light or lack of light.
- 34:12Speaker 1: I believe, Yeah, they're like I think she warns to
- 34:16Speaker 1: like you'll need the light to see, but don't worry,
- 34:17Speaker 1: they'll be attracted to it. And oh okay. She even
- 34:20Speaker 1: like leaves the lamp behind to like distract them, which
- 34:22Speaker 1: is like you know what kind of badass? Like you
- 34:24Speaker 1: know what? Like you like you solved the puzzle in
- 34:27Speaker 1: a video game and your reward is you can use
- 34:29Speaker 1: it like in a like you've never learned how to
- 34:30Speaker 1: distract them and get away, Like fucking kudos.
- 34:33Speaker 2: No, this scene is amazing. I do want to talk
- 34:34Speaker 2: about this scene. It's so good that it brought me
- 34:37Speaker 2: back into the movie really attention to it. Yeah, I'll
- 34:40Speaker 2: be honest, all the things that you said I went.
- 34:41Speaker 2: I guess they said that because I was like, ah
- 34:44Speaker 2: the entire time, I was like, no, stop speaking.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Yes, I get it, I get it, I get Yeah.
- 34:51Speaker 2: And this movie brought me back because one Rose says
- 34:54Speaker 2: to herself, I got this or something like that. She's like, yeah, no,
- 34:59Speaker 2: I do this. She takes a deep breath and yeah.
- 35:00Speaker 2: She takes a deep breath and she's like, I got this,
- 35:02Speaker 2: which is a very cool character moment of saying like,
- 35:05Speaker 2: I've been a victim this entire time. Now I get
- 35:07Speaker 2: to take command of the situation. That's an awesome moment,
- 35:10Speaker 2: a character moment. And then two, the scene itself is
- 35:14Speaker 2: just fucking fantastic. It is ohb a costume is amazing.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Every extra and their movement is amazing. The I don't
- 35:23Speaker 2: often listen or pay attention to the sound effects, but
- 35:26Speaker 2: the sound effects and the mixing is all fucking fantastic.
- 35:29Speaker 2: It is a fantastic scene. I don't know if the
- 35:32Speaker 2: nurses act that way in the movie or in the game.
- 35:35Speaker 2: Sorry it it's it's sick. It's awesome. It's an awesome
- 35:39Speaker 2: little It's.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Honestly so, as someone who played the game, and the
- 35:42Speaker 1: nurses do make a reappearance in Silent Hill two genuinely
- 35:47Speaker 1: felt like the game. It was one of those moments
- 35:49Speaker 1: where like it didn't feel like they were doing it
- 35:51Speaker 1: to be like, let's just reference the game by doing
- 35:54Speaker 1: a game mechanic in the movie type thing. Yeah, but
- 35:56Speaker 1: they captured exactly what it feels like when you encounter
- 35:59Speaker 1: them in the game, and they really do feel like that.
- 36:02Speaker 1: They move very suddenly. It's very like you might like
- 36:05Speaker 1: think like okay, I've kind of been okay or I've
- 36:07Speaker 1: made it, and then they'll suddenly be like nope, time
- 36:09Speaker 1: to attack out of nowhere, and you're like the fuck,
- 36:12Speaker 1: oh no it is. It captured it so well and
- 36:15Speaker 1: they it was a really you were one hundred percent
- 36:17Speaker 1: right to be in love with the scene. It's so good.
- 36:19Speaker 2: Hey, that's a that's a big bonus.
- 36:21Speaker 1: Yeah boom.
- 36:23Speaker 2: And then I think after that she gets into the basement,
- 36:26Speaker 2: uh for to encounter the demon, and our plot twist
- 36:30Speaker 2: is revealed, right, the big reveal of all the clues
- 36:33Speaker 2: of what is actually happening with Silent Hill and what
- 36:35Speaker 2: is that Drew, what's happening here?
- 36:37Speaker 1: The big twist is that this is some sort of
- 36:39Speaker 1: like punishment for this town because they have essentially, and
- 36:42Speaker 1: they only go into detail on this one, but the
- 36:44Speaker 1: idea essentially is this child was born to our very
- 36:48Speaker 1: witchy woman. They have decided that like the father was
- 36:51Speaker 1: a demon or something because she refuses to say who
- 36:53Speaker 1: the who the father is, so they just go like,
- 36:56Speaker 1: must be a demon. And the only way to cure
- 36:58Speaker 1: our town of this evil is too burned. The child
- 37:01Speaker 1: the result of the sin, as they put it, and
- 37:04Speaker 1: they fuck up. They don't actually kill her, They just
- 37:06Speaker 1: burn the town down. She is rushed to a hospital,
- 37:10Speaker 1: and the way they explain it is her anger manifests
- 37:13Speaker 1: so powerfully. It becomes this this spirit or this demon
- 37:17Speaker 1: or this thing, this young this not daughter that she's
- 37:20Speaker 1: been following through the town. Her actual daughter is like
- 37:25Speaker 1: the goodness that was left of her reborn again. This
- 37:28Speaker 1: is where it takes a really weird bit of like
- 37:31Speaker 1: supernatural religious bist thing, but essentially we've got burnt little
- 37:35Speaker 1: girl so angry she just develops psychic powers. They have
- 37:38Speaker 1: manifested into an evil version of herself and a tiny
- 37:42Speaker 1: baby good version of herself that's being put up for adoption,
- 37:47Speaker 1: and somehow this was all a ruse to get Rose
- 37:49Speaker 1: into the town to see the real a lessa that.
- 37:53Speaker 1: I think it's the name the Sharon is did the
- 37:56Speaker 1: real girl, the one who they thought was a witch,
- 37:58Speaker 1: to set her soul free so she'd get her revenge
- 38:01Speaker 1: and like get out of and like actually move on.
- 38:04Speaker 1: I guess yeah. And then I think, like in other movies,
- 38:08Speaker 1: you would kind of anticipate this is kind of that
- 38:09Speaker 1: moment of like, ah, the day is saved, everything's good.
- 38:11Speaker 1: We release her soul. The towns folk gets punished and
- 38:15Speaker 1: they go to hell. No no, she becomes this horrible
- 38:19Speaker 1: chain link fence, barbed wire bed monster thing and eviscerates
- 38:25Speaker 1: the town horribly. Yeah, it's it's the plot twist.
- 38:29Speaker 2: A lot of horror movies have these kind of plot
- 38:32Speaker 2: reveal plot twist situations. I really like this for some reason.
- 38:35Speaker 2: It was very satisfying. I think something to do with
- 38:38Speaker 2: cult leader being present, but like not evidently like a
- 38:44Speaker 2: villain right off the bat. It wasn't like overtly transparent.
- 38:47Speaker 2: I suppose it was transparent with hindsight, but it wasn't
- 38:50Speaker 2: overtly transparent. And yeah, it's just a very satisfying thing
- 38:54Speaker 2: to watch these people who fucked it. Here's here's the
- 38:57Speaker 2: other thing too. This movie does not pull back off
- 39:00Speaker 2: obviously with disturbing images and knowing and seeing, like actually
- 39:04Speaker 2: seeing all the disturbing stuff that they did to this
- 39:08Speaker 2: mother and child specifically, it makes it so much more
- 39:12Speaker 2: satisfying that they get their come uppance because it's not
- 39:15Speaker 2: like alluded to that they burned her. We see them
- 39:18Speaker 2: burn her, you know, it doesn't cut away.
- 39:20Speaker 1: Yeah that shit.
- 39:21Speaker 2: There's a janitor that also molested and I think he's
- 39:24Speaker 2: that skin body that I was talking about.
- 39:26Speaker 1: He is Yeah, okay, cool, cool cool cool. Yeah.
- 39:29Speaker 2: So I once the plot twist plot reveal happened, I
- 39:33Speaker 2: was like invested. I was like, Oh, let's let's get it.
- 39:37Speaker 2: Let's fucking kill these people, like, ah, you know what,
- 39:39Speaker 2: actually talking about it out loud, this movie's actually fucking
- 39:43Speaker 2: great because it made me feel because I like the
- 39:47Speaker 2: movie after the plot reveal, but speaking about it now,
- 39:50Speaker 2: I felt like a victim. I felt helpless, like I
- 39:54Speaker 2: was dying, and then I felt satisfied. You know, I
- 39:58Speaker 2: went through the journey that the character goes through.
- 40:00Speaker 1: I can only think of one other horror movie and
- 40:02Speaker 1: I will recommend it here in a minute where no,
- 40:07Speaker 1: oh no, no, not for you, not for you, for
- 40:09Speaker 1: our wider audience, I say, I want a horror movie.
- 40:12Speaker 1: I think it's a good follow up to this because
- 40:14Speaker 1: it's way less fucked up, but it has that moment
- 40:17Speaker 1: where like there is a really well done reveal by
- 40:21Speaker 1: the end, and the after the reveal and we get
- 40:25Speaker 1: to our end result, it is a surprisingly upbeat and
- 40:28Speaker 1: happy ending for the movie. Like I wouldn't call this
- 40:33Speaker 1: a happy ending by any means. It's definitely a resolution
- 40:36Speaker 1: that favors the protagonist at least and doesn't have that
- 40:38Speaker 1: classic horror movie like all the killer are still there, Like, yes,
- 40:42Speaker 1: the town of Silent Hill isn't gone, but the people
- 40:46Speaker 1: who wronged this little girl and deserve what they got.
- 40:49Speaker 1: Because I'm with you, I think the again, they do
- 40:51Speaker 1: a good job of vilifying them to the point where
- 40:53Speaker 1: you're like, yeah, I want this to happen. This was
- 40:56Speaker 1: like in Doom with the fucking racist, misogynist asshole do
- 41:00Speaker 1: where like you wanted him to suffer and die and
- 41:02Speaker 1: then he kind of just gets killed everybody else and
- 41:04Speaker 1: you're like that wasn't like it didn't it didn't like
- 41:07Speaker 1: you you fed us the villain and then didn't take
- 41:09Speaker 1: him out the way you should have here, Like you
- 41:13Speaker 1: see this town suffer and you're like, yeah, you know what,
- 41:15Speaker 1: fuck it, they deserve this. Yeah, but I will say
- 41:19Speaker 1: so if anybody's looking for a horror movie. H and
- 41:22Speaker 1: I will say also, it is the most video gamey
- 41:24Speaker 1: ass movie. Like it really feels like the plot was
- 41:27Speaker 1: we can't do a dead space movie. Here's the next
- 41:29Speaker 1: best thing. It's called Pandoram. It was like a really schlocky,
- 41:34Speaker 1: like not well received horror movie, but I think is
- 41:36Speaker 1: one of the better horror movies out there. Hmm. Okay,
- 41:39Speaker 1: definitely hit me up if you're if you're looking for more,
- 41:41Speaker 1: if you want to worm about it. I think it
- 41:42Speaker 1: was brilliant.
- 41:42Speaker 2: Definitely hit drew up because I will not be engaging
- 41:45Speaker 2: in that.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I love me. I love me some good horror
- 41:47Speaker 1: movie talk. I think they are a very fun genre
- 41:49Speaker 1: to dive into, even the ones I have trouble watching sometimes.
- 41:53Speaker 2: Yeah, and this was a hard watch.
- 41:55Speaker 1: Yeah, unabashedly really enjoyed this ving of this movie. I
- 41:59Speaker 1: don't know why I went into it thinking like I
- 42:02Speaker 1: think I remember like watching it and coming out going like, yeah,
- 42:04Speaker 1: it was okay, it wasn't great for what, Like, I
- 42:07Speaker 1: think it's the first time where it's like other movies
- 42:10Speaker 1: we've done, I've went into being like I remember really
- 42:12Speaker 1: liking it, but I'm sure now with like more wisdom
- 42:14Speaker 1: and more time, I'm going to look at and go
- 42:16Speaker 1: like eh, And I'm usually right, Pokemon being the exception
- 42:19Speaker 1: obviously this one, though, I remember not loving it, like
- 42:25Speaker 1: I remember being like, oh, like whatever, I'll watch it
- 42:27Speaker 1: for the sake of this, but like I'm not like
- 42:28Speaker 1: excited for it, And I really wound up liking it
- 42:31Speaker 1: a lot more than I remember.
- 42:32Speaker 2: Liking it, talking about it, reflecting it's so good that
- 42:34Speaker 2: we didn't watch like record this right after I've finished
- 42:37Speaker 2: It's it's been a few days since I've finished watching it.
- 42:41Speaker 1: I really I.
- 42:43Speaker 2: Think this is a good movie. I almost said I
- 42:44Speaker 2: really enjoyed this movie. That's not what happens, Oh, various feelings.
- 42:49Speaker 2: I think this is a good movie. I think it
- 42:51Speaker 2: was a good lesson, a good lesson for me.
- 42:54Speaker 1: So what I do want to bring up though, and
- 42:56Speaker 1: I know we kind of have dropped doing the fun facts,
- 42:57Speaker 1: is on every movie has good ones, So rather than
- 42:59Speaker 1: give it to segment. I did want to kind of
- 43:01Speaker 1: shout out the director of this movie, Chris Gans, the
- 43:05Speaker 1: lengths he went to to like make this movie one
- 43:08Speaker 1: was just such a big fan. He apparently had his
- 43:10Speaker 1: own pocket actually like made a few of the scenes
- 43:13Speaker 1: like with like local actors and his own budget and
- 43:16Speaker 1: like time to present to e Konami in his pitch
- 43:20Speaker 1: to prove that he knew the Games and knew what
- 43:22Speaker 1: he wanted to do and do something good with them.
- 43:25Speaker 1: And it worked clearly because they gave him the rights
- 43:27Speaker 1: and then just some of the stuff he did to
- 43:29Speaker 1: make this movie work the way it did. So first
- 43:31Speaker 1: things first, all of the music in this movie is
- 43:34Speaker 1: from the Games. WHOA. This is all stripped right from
- 43:38Speaker 1: Silent Hill one. For the sake of credits, they had
- 43:41Speaker 1: to include another composer on it, specifically Canadian composer because
- 43:44Speaker 1: it was filmed in Canada, of course, so they had
- 43:47Speaker 1: to like he remixed it a bit. But the music
- 43:49Speaker 1: as a bass is all from the Games. Okay, all
- 43:53Speaker 1: of the creatures are actors. They are all dancers actually,
- 43:58Speaker 1: because they wanted to get those like really like weird
- 44:01Speaker 1: movements that like you can't normally kind of a dancer's
- 44:04Speaker 1: level of flexibility and movement, So like all the nurses,
- 44:07Speaker 1: all the creatures we see stumbling around were dancers. In fact,
- 44:11Speaker 1: I even love this. The nurses that first few twitching
- 44:13Speaker 1: motions they do when they first show up is actually
- 44:16Speaker 1: shot in reverse to give it like even more of
- 44:18Speaker 1: like a creepiness to it, so that seems less natural. Yeah. Wow.
- 44:22Speaker 1: And then the lead dancer slash choreographer, who I will
- 44:26Speaker 1: shout out as Roberto Campanella. Uh not only was the
- 44:31Speaker 1: like coordinator for all of these creatures and like the instructor,
- 44:34Speaker 1: he was also the janitor, both the actor and the
- 44:39Speaker 1: version we see in the bathroom with like the crazy
- 44:42Speaker 1: the one thing I will say that we're tongue motions
- 44:44Speaker 1: the creepy janitor has when he's a monster. Yeah. He's
- 44:49Speaker 1: also pyramidhead. Oh, just a very fit guy. Yeap. He
- 44:54Speaker 1: had to wear like I think it was like five
- 44:56Speaker 1: foot heels or something to work for like the these
- 44:58Speaker 1: like platform heeled boots to get the height. So it's
- 45:01Speaker 1: all practical effects with this the thing it was like
- 45:03Speaker 1: a fifteen pound helmet. But just like the guy who
- 45:06Speaker 1: was the choreo, the dance instructor and like the big
- 45:09Speaker 1: bad like fucking brilliant work to get like this kind
- 45:12Speaker 1: of craziness together show like I need to I need
- 45:15Speaker 1: just a point, yeah for all point something I didn't notice,
- 45:20Speaker 1: and like I honestly like I It's one of those
- 45:22Speaker 1: things where it's like, if I ever have to rewatch
- 45:24Speaker 1: this movie or end every watching it, I will look
- 45:26Speaker 1: out for it. I'm not gonna go watch it just
- 45:28Speaker 1: to look out for it. Rose's outfit apparently changes multiple
- 45:32Speaker 1: times throughout the movie. Apparently there were at least one
- 45:34Speaker 1: hundred copies of her outfit, and it was just that
- 45:37Speaker 1: every version of it was slightly more washed out than
- 45:40Speaker 1: the previous version. So it goes from being kind of
- 45:43Speaker 1: vibrant with the reds and the creamy yellows all the
- 45:46Speaker 1: way down to black and white by the end of
- 45:48Speaker 1: the movie. Oh So, it's just like it's every time
- 45:51Speaker 1: they shoot a scene, they would just give her the
- 45:52Speaker 1: next one down the row of like outfits, so that
- 45:55Speaker 1: as the movie goes on, it's periodically getting darker and
- 45:58Speaker 1: less bright and less colorful. Her outfit just by being
- 46:01Speaker 1: the same physical outfit just change colors, like honestly like
- 46:05Speaker 1: like looking at like a shot from the beginning and
- 46:07Speaker 1: a shot from the end. It's like you can see
- 46:08Speaker 1: the difference. Yeah, but like I wouldn't have noticed it
- 46:11Speaker 1: slowly gradually over time.
- 46:12Speaker 2: That's so fucking crazy. Yeah that's cool. That's cool.
- 46:15Speaker 1: Hell yeah, hell yeah. Last thing I will say is
- 46:18Speaker 1: just our director being such a nerdy fan of the
- 46:21Speaker 1: game franchise, despite basements on the first game, was like, yeah,
- 46:25Speaker 1: I know, I know Pyramidheads from the second game, but
- 46:28Speaker 1: he's so fucking badass and iconic, I'm just gonna write
- 46:31Speaker 1: him into this as a fucking creepy monster. So like, yes,
- 46:34Speaker 1: if we're going by like the lore of the games
- 46:36Speaker 1: and like what Pyramidhead represents for the character in Saln
- 46:39Speaker 1: Hill too, it's like it's I think with guilt. It's
- 46:41Speaker 1: so it's one of the weirder ones I've had to
- 46:42Speaker 1: read up on, but it doesn't fit here. But he
- 46:45Speaker 1: is just such a fucking menacing thing that and like
- 46:47Speaker 1: you knew who he was by like contacts versus like
- 46:50Speaker 1: playing the games. So yeah, yeah, I think he was
- 46:52Speaker 1: worth having in there. So yeah, this is really just
- 46:56Speaker 1: a sign of a director who was like this was
- 46:58Speaker 1: their passion project, like they thought to make this movie happen,
- 47:01Speaker 1: and I'm so glad he did.
- 47:02Speaker 2: You know, and learning about that's it shows up because
- 47:06Speaker 2: this is a very accurate adaptation, is what it seems like.
- 47:10Speaker 2: Again not playing the games myself, but with hindsight as well.
- 47:13Speaker 2: It made me feel things. It's very coherent. Yes, it
- 47:17Speaker 2: is a little bit trophy in terms of like the
- 47:19Speaker 2: horror genre, but it ends up being like quite a
- 47:22Speaker 2: good experience, Like I felt all the things that they
- 47:25Speaker 2: most likely intended me to feel, which includes satisfaction. Now,
- 47:31Speaker 2: at the very very end of the movie, we did
- 47:33Speaker 2: forget to mention, it is revealed, like we've alluded to it,
- 47:35Speaker 2: but it's revealed that Rose and her daughter are home,
- 47:40Speaker 2: but ye, sean Bean is also in their home, and
- 47:44Speaker 2: so the implication is they are either dead as you mentioned,
- 47:47Speaker 2: or are stuck in their dimension, the purgatory dimension, and
- 47:51Speaker 2: that's not actually home because she does actually audibly say
- 47:55Speaker 2: we're home, and that just ends up not being true.
- 47:58Speaker 2: So it's not quote unquote as satisfying of ending and
- 48:02Speaker 2: not everyone ends up happy quota. But at the same time,
- 48:05Speaker 2: there is like a closure to that.
- 48:08Speaker 1: Yeah, Like I think if we go with like the
- 48:10Speaker 1: death metaphor like they are dead the whole time kind
- 48:12Speaker 1: of thing. I think the idea is that like you know, yes,
- 48:14Speaker 1: you're still dead, but you've escaped purgatory I e. Silent Hill.
- 48:18Speaker 1: I don't. Yeah, Like I think like you could maybe
- 48:21Speaker 1: go a stretch and say like this is them, like
- 48:23Speaker 1: like that when they get home and the realization that
- 48:26Speaker 1: they're not coming back is kind of the moment where
- 48:27Speaker 1: like they've made like we assume that this is the end.
- 48:30Speaker 1: They made it to heaven or they're just stuck living
- 48:33Speaker 1: in this version of the world as it is, Like
- 48:34Speaker 1: we don't really have a clear answer there. But I
- 48:37Speaker 1: think it's intended to be a mysterious ending while still
- 48:39Speaker 1: being like Okay, they made it out, but things are
- 48:41Speaker 1: bad m hm, Like as happy as you can get
- 48:44Speaker 1: in a Silent Hill ending.
- 48:45Speaker 2: I guess, yeah, yeah, yeah, And I like that.
- 48:47Speaker 1: I like that. Yeah.
- 48:48Speaker 2: So in terms of in terms of adaptation, what do
- 48:50Speaker 2: you rank in this yes.
- 48:52Speaker 1: Uh so to rate this movie. As I've said, I
- 48:55Speaker 1: love Silent Hill too. And while I did do a
- 48:57Speaker 1: lot of lore reading and even like watch some of those,
- 48:58Speaker 1: like the gameplay of Later, as I can say, it
- 49:01Speaker 1: really does seem to cover all the silent hill bases
- 49:04Speaker 1: I would want, like as a fan of the games,
- 49:06Speaker 1: especially having only like seen bits of one and played two,
- 49:09Speaker 1: this is what I wanted from a game. I will
- 49:12Speaker 1: give this ten horrifying burnt children monsters out of ten.
- 49:14Speaker 1: Oh my god, because those things, I think, of all
- 49:18Speaker 1: the things we face, were the most upsetting. Yeah, yeah, o.
- 49:22Speaker 2: God, Yeah, I don't have a mark and this doesn't
- 49:26Speaker 2: mean anything. I'm gonna give this a triangle ahead out
- 49:30Speaker 2: of a pyramidhead.
- 49:31Speaker 1: You know, one one, two D version of this? You
- 49:35Speaker 1: want the eight bid version of this will be easier
- 49:36Speaker 1: to swallow.
- 49:37Speaker 2: Yeah, scene, it seems good, seems good.
- 49:40Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a movie. I love horror movies. I love
- 49:43Speaker 1: when horror has done well and like you're not relying
- 49:46Speaker 1: on the jump scares. Often horror movies fore go good storytelling.
- 49:49Speaker 1: And as you saw, you've even come to realize, like
- 49:52Speaker 1: there was good story here, there was something here. Uh.
- 49:56Speaker 1: This is one of the like better non sci fi
- 49:58Speaker 1: horror movie films I can recall watching the last several years. Honestly,
- 50:02Speaker 1: I'm gonna give this five pentagrams. I mean starve Oh
- 50:05Speaker 1: all right, little I don't want to be burning down
- 50:09Speaker 1: in the town and something in the evils here. I
- 50:10Speaker 1: live by the ocean. I'm land locked, dude. I'm good.
- 50:14Speaker 1: I'm gucci. Ten minute walk to the lake, ten minute
- 50:18Speaker 1: drive to the ocean, in multiple directions. I am screwed.
- 50:20Speaker 2: Yo. Yeah, listen, I don't even need a salt circle
- 50:24Speaker 2: out here, but I'm gonna give this a shut up
- 50:28Speaker 2: hill out of.
- 50:32Speaker 1: I love that to just be like, yeah, fine, I
- 50:35Speaker 1: liked to shut up different again.
- 50:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think is pretty good in terms
- 50:41Speaker 2: of horror movies. There's still some decisions by the characters
- 50:43Speaker 2: where I'm like, what's going on? But yeah, it achieves
- 50:47Speaker 2: what it wants to achieve. I believe so, I honestly
- 50:50Speaker 2: ranking wise, and we're gonna we're gonna get to the
- 50:52Speaker 2: rankings of the movies. I think this is gonna be higher,
- 50:54Speaker 2: way higher than I thought it was gonna be. After
- 50:56Speaker 2: this conversation, I was gonna wow bury this ship. But
- 50:59Speaker 2: you know, ah, after this conversation, I think it's pretty
- 51:02Speaker 2: pretty dang high up there.
- 51:03Speaker 1: I'm pretty excited. I'm I'm really happy to hear that.
- 51:06Speaker 1: I think, honestly, I'm more happy knowing that while you
- 51:08Speaker 1: like probably will never watch this again or anything like
- 51:11Speaker 1: it again. That like it had a positive you got
- 51:13Speaker 1: a positive like experience out of it by the end.
- 51:16Speaker 1: Like I love that for you.
- 51:17Speaker 2: You know me, I'm the type of guy who will
- 51:19Speaker 2: gladly get out of his comfort zone, probably regret some
- 51:23Speaker 2: of it afterwards, but my fear of abandonment exceeds my
- 51:27Speaker 2: fear of my own comfort zone and levels.
- 51:31Speaker 1: I think. I think in some way that's a good thing.
- 51:33Speaker 1: I love this for you. Well, it's take a quick break,
- 51:36Speaker 1: come back with a little game to end their episode
- 51:37Speaker 1: off and see how everything's feeling after that. Welcome back, everybody.
- 51:45Speaker 1: How are we feeling good? You know? Don't you scared?
- 51:49Speaker 1: Salent Hill didn't didn't ruin you forever? You're You're gonna
- 51:51Speaker 1: make it out of here alive. Editors.
- 51:53Speaker 2: No, I'm fucking horrified right now because I have to
- 51:56Speaker 2: remember where we were headspace wise, and we were in
- 52:00Speaker 2: such a different headspace five minutes ago.
- 52:02Speaker 1: Oh my god.
- 52:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm actually truly terrified because I'm like, fuck, I'm
- 52:09Speaker 2: I can't find the space in my mind. Ballas well.
- 52:14Speaker 1: Hopefully you're doing okay, because this game is you know what,
- 52:18Speaker 1: Like I know you don't like horror movies, and I couldn't,
- 52:20Speaker 1: and I feel like I did a horror movie thing
- 52:21Speaker 1: recently with with with A with all the resident evil
- 52:25Speaker 1: and the zombies. So I went very video gamy on
- 52:28Speaker 1: this one, okay, and I I don't know why there's
- 52:32Speaker 1: my inspiration, but it kind of works. Is a good
- 52:34Speaker 1: toming off point. I have listed here a potential game
- 52:37Speaker 1: of the year for the last for the ten years
- 52:40Speaker 1: leading up to Silent Hill. So Silent Hill came out
- 52:42Speaker 1: of night original Silent Hill came in ninety nine. It
- 52:44Speaker 1: was considered a big hit. So I went from ninety
- 52:47Speaker 1: nine all the way back to eighty nine, the year
- 52:49Speaker 1: I was born. Not that that's relevant in any way,
- 52:53Speaker 1: shape or form.
- 52:54Speaker 2: Well, I think it's relevant to say that you decided, Oh,
- 52:58Speaker 2: because Jason's not a fan of scary movies, let's not
- 53:01Speaker 2: do a of game based on scary movies, but let's
- 53:04Speaker 2: do a game based on video games release before he
- 53:08Speaker 2: was born.
- 53:10Speaker 1: So with that in mind, there was no because I
- 53:17Speaker 1: purposely considered that because the way the lists I found,
- 53:20Speaker 1: there were multiple lists. There was no like award of
- 53:23Speaker 1: any sort that like denoted this was the game of
- 53:25Speaker 1: the year it was the best seller. So I have
- 53:28Speaker 1: here is just a game from that year that was
- 53:31Speaker 1: incredibly popular and well known. I think all of them
- 53:35Speaker 1: are games you should know because you've played video games before. Okay,
- 53:42Speaker 1: also because the way the game works. There was a
- 53:45Speaker 1: small caveat to this list. There are no made up
- 53:49Speaker 1: words in any of these titles. They are all normal
- 53:52Speaker 1: words because what I've done here. What I've done here
- 53:57Speaker 1: is I have found ridiculous synonyms for every in the title.
- 54:01Speaker 2: Oh that's the twist, all right. So ideally you'd also
- 54:07Speaker 2: know that this is the first time I've been a
- 54:11Speaker 2: willing participant in these games.
- 54:12Speaker 1: There was one time where yes, we're it was sprung
- 54:15Speaker 1: on me. Whoops, I was also I sprung on myself.
- 54:18Speaker 1: Weird true? Why? Yeah, yeah, like I heard was coming.
- 54:22Speaker 1: I had no idea what he had planned. It was
- 54:23Speaker 1: completely like I was going in as blind as you were.
- 54:26Speaker 1: That is true.
- 54:27Speaker 2: No, actually yeah, but you're my pyramid head?
- 54:30Speaker 1: Is what's happening here? Yes I am. I am tormenting
- 54:33Speaker 1: you with psychological terrors in a way that are not
- 54:37Speaker 1: horrifying but like thought provoking while still being creepy. So
- 54:41Speaker 1: a regular day and my mental Skipe just to be
- 54:44Speaker 1: like upfront, like one of the obvious games I would
- 54:47Speaker 1: have put on this list would have been Pokemon Red
- 54:49Speaker 1: and Blue, but like, there really isn't another, Like I
- 54:51Speaker 1: guess I could have. I didn't been Pokemon those because
- 54:54Speaker 1: it's not a real word. Okay, So I guess consider
- 54:56Speaker 1: that for all of these.
- 54:57Speaker 2: Okay, that was literally the only game I was thinking.
- 55:00Speaker 2: And I knew it came out in nineteen ninety six
- 55:02Speaker 2: because that's when I was.
- 55:02Speaker 1: Born, so it was on my list. It really was
- 55:05Speaker 1: the one on my lists. But I was like, yeah, okay. Also,
- 55:09Speaker 1: some of these are games you might know about more
- 55:12Speaker 1: specifically for other reasons than just them being video games
- 55:15Speaker 1: in and nudge nudge, m yeah, games we've reviewed for
- 55:18Speaker 1: this series. Puts the dusts together. Anyways, let's see what happened. Yes,
- 55:22Speaker 1: so from nineteen eighty nine, not a great list to
- 55:25Speaker 1: pick from the game for this one would be Concluding Clash,
- 55:30Speaker 1: Finish Fight, Final Fight, Final Fight. There you go.
- 55:34Speaker 2: Ah, I hate I'm terrible at these games on regular pantemonium,
- 55:39Speaker 2: so so we're gonna bear with me.
- 55:42Speaker 1: There you go, and you have no one to compete with.
- 55:44Speaker 1: This is purely just fun. I didn't realize I know what.
- 55:47Speaker 2: My Asian shame that like drives my every day and
- 55:51Speaker 2: anxiety is like I have to succeed, I have to win.
- 55:55Speaker 2: But if there's no one to win again, but that's it,
- 55:57Speaker 2: there's no one to fail against either. This is a
- 56:00Speaker 2: re win. The only way this ends is me being
- 56:02Speaker 2: proud of you. Oh no, this is a horror escape.
- 56:05Speaker 1: I see. I don't know how to do.
- 56:07Speaker 2: I don't know how to do with that.
- 56:09Speaker 1: You make, you make of it as you want. Nineteen ninety.
- 56:13Speaker 1: The Conundrum of Simeon Atoll, the something of Monkeys. Simeon
- 56:18Speaker 1: is monkey. I don't know what monkey is. The conundrum,
- 56:22Speaker 1: the something of the well known. I feel like it's
- 56:25Speaker 1: a well known game point, like Adventure.
- 56:27Speaker 2: Monkeys from Lucas. Something about Monkey Island. I remember the
- 56:36Speaker 2: Misadventures of Monkey Island, the the some kind of Monkey Island.
- 56:44Speaker 2: If you have an island, you're going to solve something.
- 56:46Speaker 2: There's something's going to get you. The mystery of Monkey Island, the.
- 56:50Speaker 1: It's it's secret, but you basically got it. It's one
- 56:52Speaker 1: of those any of those words just go okay, yeah,
- 56:55Speaker 1: I think I think moving on. These are all a
- 56:57Speaker 1: lot more well known. Those are way two like, oh,
- 56:59Speaker 1: these might be hard ones. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, God,
- 57:02Speaker 1: if I can pronounce this fucking word, give me it.
- 57:04Speaker 1: I've been practicing this one. Audible the air in SIDEA.
- 57:07Speaker 1: You're an awful man. What am I supposed to clean
- 57:12Speaker 1: from that? What is that word? Audible? Yes?
- 57:17Speaker 2: Is that several words?
- 57:18Speaker 1: Is that one word? It's one word. It's one word.
- 57:21Speaker 2: You couldn't think of a synonym for pocket monsters.
- 57:25Speaker 1: I realized I could have done it afterwards as the problem,
- 57:28Speaker 1: Uh no, this is audible? Is audible?
- 57:31Speaker 2: Part of it is that you saying a thing, no audible?
- 57:33Speaker 2: Audible is the first word audible? Sound the in a?
- 57:43Speaker 2: Is that a different language because that doesn't count as
- 57:44Speaker 2: a synonym. That's not how synonyms work technically.
- 57:48Speaker 1: It's the genus name.
- 57:49Speaker 2: It comes from Latin audible.
- 57:53Speaker 1: I don't play this game anymore. Also, how many video
- 57:57Speaker 1: games are just something?
- 57:58Speaker 2: The something, something, the something thing from nineteen ninety one,
- 58:02Speaker 2: I don't know something, the something that doesn't help me?
- 58:06Speaker 1: Audible.
- 58:07Speaker 2: You can get this nice and quick, you can go fast.
- 58:10Speaker 2: What do you mean audible? Something of the legend of sonic?
- 58:14Speaker 2: I don't know what the fuck you're saying right now,
- 58:16Speaker 2: you've got one of the words, really sonic. What's the
- 58:21Speaker 2: first sonic? It's always just been sonic. Yeah, audible sonic
- 58:26Speaker 2: things you can hear sound waves, ding sound No, no, no,
- 58:30Speaker 2: audible is sonic. Audible refers to sound around you is
- 58:35Speaker 2: a sound wave. So your first word is sonic the something.
- 58:40Speaker 2: Oh you got to sonic the wrong way round. I
- 58:45Speaker 2: was like, yeah, he's a hedgehog. I just I just
- 58:47Speaker 2: it was I include that that's.
- 58:49Speaker 1: The genus for hedgehog. I can't pronounce that. It sounds
- 58:53Speaker 1: like a kid in almost, which seems like a weird thing.
- 58:55Speaker 1: I wonder if that's why they chose that for knuckles,
- 58:57Speaker 1: of all things, because a kid is a pretty fucking
- 58:59Speaker 1: weird an to pick from.
- 59:01Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure, it doesn't look anything like that has
- 59:03Speaker 2: five penises. Anyways, let's move.
- 59:04Speaker 1: On ninety two Anthropological engagement anthropological Did you ever take
- 59:11Speaker 1: an anthropology class in school? Is an anthropology like the
- 59:15Speaker 1: study of humans and culture?
- 59:18Speaker 2: So like, yeah, yeah, those are all you're very much
- 59:22Speaker 2: on that. A synonym for that would be like social
- 59:24Speaker 2: studies or like you you.
- 59:27Speaker 1: Were very on it with what what what do you
- 59:28Speaker 1: study an anthropology. Who were you studying anthropology? People?
- 59:31Speaker 2: What's the what was it? What were the other clues?
- 59:34Speaker 2: This is why I fucking suck ass.
- 59:35Speaker 1: At these games. I love watching the thought process. You
- 59:38Speaker 1: have the time to think it through.
- 59:39Speaker 2: I don't because now it outs me as a dummy.
- 59:42Speaker 1: I think you're doing great here. The other one was engagement.
- 59:45Speaker 2: Engagement, Yes, fight like conflict like uh the people clash
- 59:53Speaker 2: crash bandicoot, people fight like that super smash. I don't know, this.
- 59:59Speaker 1: Is might be it might it might be a movie.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: We've done a movie.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: We've done Final Fight, Street Fighter, Fight, Double Dragon, the
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: other fighting.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: One, Mortal combat. There you go. What anthropological is the
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: study of US people? Mortals? Mortals? Okay? And an engagement Okay?
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: You said you said a fight in a class you said, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: nineteen ninety three celebrity vixen Star Fox. Yes, that one.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: I got so proud of you. I'm so yeah that one.
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: The visuals don't get released on this, but you can
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: literally see the light bulb on my head go off.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: I was so sure of like all like the other
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: ones are all kind of like weird words you can
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: work backwards. Yeah, I thought this would be like an
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: actual tricky one for a minute, I like, what the
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: fuck does it even mean? No? Oh damn, yeah I am.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: I'm very impressed by that one, Like thank you, Like
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: I thought that'd be the one that would not be
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: the longest.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: Thank you, thank you. I often call people foxes in
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: real life. I'm like, O you you little minx.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: I was holding gray fox a while ago because I
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: get some grades going on the beard there, but like
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: kind for me, I kind of like it. I'm kind
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: of cool.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, hi?
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: Uh more animal related ones in nineteen ninety four, Jackass,
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: Harbor out.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: Back, Donkey Kong country.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: Fucking a dude. Yes, yeah, I also totally cheated on
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: that one because Kong isn't a word, but harbor is
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: where the kong in Hong Kong comes from. Oh I
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: I researched Asia for this one. Yeah.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: I didn't pay attention to that clue at all, so
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: fucking long to figure that out. Oh no, but you
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: could take of one form pocket monsters. That's fine, right,
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: I'm so mad. I'm so mad I didn't do that's okay,
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: Next one, yeah, next one. Nineteen eighty five Duration initiate
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: time start duration I mean that does make it a
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: lot easier than those words do work for. Could be
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: the same hint.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: Essentially go go go now.
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: Fine length duration, length of time go.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: Uh. This game definitely has to do with time travel
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: and is more thematic for the episode coming out next month.
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: Next month is I don't even fucking know, Psycho, not
