- 0:00Podcastheroes.com Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed
- 0:06to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:08I'm your host, Anna McGivern for October 28th.
- 0:11Today is National Chocolate Day, a delicious celebration of one
- 0:15of the world's most beloved treats.
- 0:17Observed annually on October 28th in the US, this day invites
- 0:22us to indulge in chocolates in many forms.
- 0:25From classic milk chocolate bars to rich dark chocolate, from
- 0:29creamy truffles to decadent cakes.
- 0:32The history of chocolate stretches back over 3000 years
- 0:37to ancient Mesoamerican civilizations.
- 0:40The Olmacs, Mayans, and Aztecs cultivated calco beans and
- 0:45created a bitter, frothy beverage that they believed was
- 0:48a gift from the gods. The Aztec word Theobrahma
- 0:52literally means food for the gods.
- 0:55When Spanish explorers brought chocolate to Europe in the 16th
- 0:58century, it transformed from a ceremonial drink into the sweet
- 1:02treat Reno today. The first solid chocolate bar
- 1:06was created by Joseph Fry in 1847 when he discovered that
- 1:10adding melted cocoa butter back to Dutch cocoa created a
- 1:14moldable paste. What makes National Chocolate
- 1:17Day special is it's recognition that chocolate is more than just
- 1:21candy. It's comfort, celebration, and a
- 1:24small indulgent that can brighten even the most difficult
- 1:27days. And that brings us to today's
- 1:30quote from John Julius, who once said 9 out of 10 people like
- 1:35chocolate, the 10th person always lies.
- 1:39Julius's humorous observation captures something genuine about
- 1:43chocolates universal appeal. While he's clearly exaggerating
- 1:47for comedic effect, there's truth underneath the joke.
- 1:51Chocolate is one of the few things that crosses virtually
- 1:54every boundary. Age, culture, economic status,
- 1:58personal taste. Chocolate finds fans everywhere.
- 2:03Think about what makes chocolate so universally beloved.
- 2:06It's not just the taste, though that certainly helps.
- 2:10Chocolate triggers the release of endorphins in our brains,
- 2:14literally making us feel happier.
- 2:17It contains compounds like phenol, lethal lynine, sometimes
- 2:22called the love drug, because it creates feelings similar to
- 2:26being in love. There's actual chemistry behind
- 2:29why chocolate makes us feel good.
- 2:31But beyond the science, chocolate represents something
- 2:35more. It's associated with
- 2:37celebration, comfort, romance, and reward.
- 2:40We give chocolate as gifts. We eat it when we're sad, we
- 2:45celebrate with it when we're happy.
- 2:48It's one of the few foods that works for basically any
- 2:51emotional state or occasion. Julius's joke suggests that
- 2:57disliking chocolate is so unusual, it must be dishonesty
- 3:02rather than genuine preference. While some people genuinely
- 3:07don't enjoy chocolate, his point stands.
- 3:11Chocolate is about as close to universally loved as any food
- 3:14gets. National Chocolate Day
- 3:16celebrates this rare common ground.
- 3:19So today, embrace the spirit of National Chocolate Day.
- 3:24In Julius's humorous wisdom about chocolate's universal
- 3:28appeal, treat yourself to some really good chocolate today.
- 3:32Not the grab and go kind, but something you actually savor and
- 3:36enjoy. But also think about chocolate
- 3:39as common ground. In a world that often feels
- 3:43divided, chocolate reminds us that universal pleasures still
- 3:47exist. What other common ground might
- 3:50you be overlooking? What simple pleasures could
- 3:54bring people together despite their differences?
- 3:58Maybe share some chocolate with coworkers or our neighbors
- 4:01today. Sometimes the best conversations
- 4:04and connections happen over shared sweetness, literally and
- 4:09figuratively. That's going to do it for today.
- 4:13Thanks for listening. I'm Andy McGivern, signing off
- 4:16for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
