- 0:00Speaker 1: You're listening to KFI AM six forty the Bill Handles
- 0:04Speaker 1: show on demand on the iHeartRadio app. Good morning, everybody,
- 0:11Speaker 1: And you think we have a couple of things to
- 0:14Speaker 1: talk about every day, every day gets crazier and crazier.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Where Epstein is now off the front burner, Greenland is
- 0:23Speaker 1: now off the front burner. You've got Venezuela off the
- 0:28Speaker 1: front burner. And now we move on to the front burner,
- 0:32Speaker 1: if you will, the case. What happened yesterday, this shooting
- 0:36Speaker 1: in Minneapolis. So we've got a fair amount to talk
- 0:38Speaker 1: about this morning as usual. First of all, Oliver is
- 0:44Speaker 1: here on the board. He is in for He's in
- 0:48Speaker 1: for Kono. Got a text from Kno this morning saying
- 0:52Speaker 1: I've had it. I'm done. I quit. I can't take
- 0:57Speaker 1: the show anymore. And I can understand that. It's uh,
- 1:02Speaker 1: you know, it's happened before on this show where people
- 1:06Speaker 1: had just said, you know, I'm done. Usually it's not
- 1:09Speaker 1: driving on the way in when they quit, but today
- 1:14Speaker 1: that was the case. So anyway, Oliver, a welcome aboard.
- 1:17Speaker 1: You look like you're about to fall asleep by the way.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Your eyes are droopy, and unless you have that medical
- 1:23Speaker 1: condition where your eyes are droopy.
- 1:26Speaker 2: I might just I don't know. It's tough at this time.
- 1:28Speaker 2: I don't know how ConA does it. I don't know
- 1:30Speaker 2: how you will do it.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Well, you don't have to worry about Cono anymore because
- 1:35Speaker 1: he'll tell you how he does it. He doesn't. By
- 1:38Speaker 1: the way, I'm actually not very serious about this. People
- 1:41Speaker 1: will and he's he had.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Some car trouble right yeah, yeah, his car started to
- 1:48Speaker 3: break down the right here.
- 1:50Speaker 4: It done broke, so it's over.
- 1:53Speaker 3: So he called from the side of the freeway, saying
- 1:55Speaker 3: I'm not going to make it.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Oh, he's just I can't make it at all today
- 1:58Speaker 1: because he's.
- 1:58Speaker 4: No his car is now.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm just glaud that it was. He yes, Oh,
- 2:04Speaker 1: I would have loved it if you weren't here. Oh,
- 2:06Speaker 1: that would have been spectacular. Boy, that would be saying
- 2:12Speaker 1: a lot you do overnights here.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Or I'm training with Kono currently, but I've been on
- 2:18Speaker 2: the sidelines and so this is my first time actually
- 2:22Speaker 2: running the board for your show.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Exciting. What are you By the way, that accent is
- 2:28Speaker 1: hold on, it's not British, it's not New Zealand, it's
- 2:33Speaker 1: not Australian or maybe it is which one is.
- 2:38Speaker 2: It's one of the kind. It's British, but I grew
- 2:40Speaker 2: up in Holland, so it's it's a.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Mess, got it, got it, all right. I have a
- 2:45Speaker 1: partner or had a partner, And she was born in
- 2:50Speaker 1: Great Britain, moved to South Africa for a period of time,
- 2:56Speaker 1: finished university in South Africa, went back to England in
- 3:00Speaker 1: to law school. And she had an accent that was
- 3:04Speaker 1: somewhere in the mid Atlantic. You could not at all
- 3:08Speaker 1: pegg it so so much for that, Okay, fair enough,
- 3:13Speaker 1: all right? Now Amy, good morning, Hi.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Bill, how are you?
- 3:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm okay, I'm okay. And Ann is there? Hello, Hello,
- 3:20Speaker 1: and wearing her Chargers outfit, Aim Amy wearing or California
- 3:26Speaker 1: just the state of California.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Right, supporting California today, eighteen.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Fifty right, okay, what else? Who else there? Neil is
- 3:36Speaker 1: not there? And we get well, we're going to do
- 3:38Speaker 1: a show anyway with what the heck? Yeah, what the heck?
- 3:42Speaker 1: I mean we have to and no will you know
- 3:44Speaker 1: we get paid? Oh hit, that's right, and no will Yeah,
- 3:49Speaker 1: he's out. What does he do? Does he do? Traffic
- 3:51Speaker 1: over the Fiesta Bowl. No.
- 3:53Speaker 4: You know how when you watch football games. Yeah, and
- 3:57Speaker 4: at the when they leave or when they come back
- 3:59Speaker 4: after commercial, you see the overhead view you know that
- 4:03Speaker 4: from the sky of the stadium. Yeah, well, there's a
- 4:06Speaker 4: plane flying over the stadiums that photographs that or videotapes that.
- 4:12Speaker 4: And that is what Will does.
- 4:13Speaker 1: He physically videotapes it.
- 4:17Speaker 4: Got a camera.
- 4:18Speaker 1: He's a camera person. Yeah, a cameraman so to speak.
- 4:21Speaker 1: All right, fair enough, Well, we are certainly going to
- 4:26Speaker 1: cover what happened yesterday in Minneapolis and just a few
- 4:31Speaker 1: blocks less than a mile away from the shooting of
- 4:35Speaker 1: George Floyd several years ago Minneapolis is Boy, has that
- 4:40Speaker 1: gotten the attention of the rest of the country. Okay,
- 4:42Speaker 1: let's do it. It's time for handle on the news.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Amy Neil is not here. He's back next week and
- 4:48Speaker 1: me lead story.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Been around for long long.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Music connects. What am I missing here? Oliver? You have
- 5:00Speaker 1: to explain that to me.
- 5:03Speaker 2: I I'm just I'm just forget a slug.
- 5:07Speaker 1: I like, just for now, just okay, just all right,
- 5:09Speaker 1: just okay. I mean, by the way, I'm not not
- 5:12Speaker 1: giving you too much grief because I understand they just
- 5:14Speaker 1: threw you into this, but little I'm just gonna you
- 5:16Speaker 1: know what was that about? Okay, fair enough, because I
- 5:19Speaker 1: always harassed Kono for that sort of thing. All right.
- 5:22Speaker 1: So the lead story, of course, is what happened yesterday
- 5:24Speaker 1: when an Ice officer killed this Minneapolis woman. It was
- 5:29Speaker 1: during the latest immigration crackdown, and men are there is
- 5:34Speaker 1: there controversy there because you look at the video from
- 5:39Speaker 1: many different angles, and there are it can't be the
- 5:45Speaker 1: same person and the same incident. It can't why because
- 5:49Speaker 1: one group of people say, look at that she was
- 5:52Speaker 1: trying to get away, the other group of people saying,
- 5:55Speaker 1: look at that she was trying to hit the officer.
- 5:58Speaker 1: So she's at an suv, she is blocking the road,
- 6:03Speaker 1: partially blocking the road, and during this demonstration, and a
- 6:09Speaker 1: couple of Ice Policeman officers are in a pickup truck
- 6:14Speaker 1: drive up to her and you see her with another
- 6:20Speaker 1: car waving the other car through. There was enough space
- 6:23Speaker 1: to get through, it looks like. And then you see
- 6:27Speaker 1: the two Ice officials coming up to her, one grabbing
- 6:33Speaker 1: the handle of the car and I understand that it
- 6:36Speaker 1: was the window was down, and then she is she
- 6:40Speaker 1: backs up and then starts moving forward. There was an
- 6:45Speaker 1: officer near that. Now whether the argument here is was
- 6:49Speaker 1: she gunning for that officer or was she trying to
- 6:52Speaker 1: get away from that officer? Looking at it, it looks
- 6:57Speaker 1: to me. And by the way, this is a question
- 6:59Speaker 1: of interpretation, because in the end it'll be an investigation
- 7:02Speaker 1: and quite possibly a jury's going to have to make
- 7:03Speaker 1: the determination. It looked to me like she was trying
- 7:06Speaker 1: to get away. And but I will tell you that.
- 7:10Speaker 4: An officer was standing in her way.
- 7:12Speaker 1: That's I not even know vehicle, and she was if
- 7:17Speaker 1: you look at the way, yes, but if you look
- 7:21Speaker 1: at the way she was turning the wheel and trying
- 7:24Speaker 1: to move in a direction, well, again it's a question
- 7:27Speaker 1: of interpretation. Was she gunning for the cop? It didn't
- 7:30Speaker 1: look like it to me, or was it?
- 7:32Speaker 4: Did he just happen to be there?
- 7:34Speaker 1: Well, he was there, I mean, because they were moving
- 7:36Speaker 1: towards the car. There were no cops there, There were
- 7:38Speaker 1: no officers there. I mean, they went ahead and moved
- 7:41Speaker 1: towards her, and then the shots rang out, and of
- 7:44Speaker 1: course it was you know, the whole thing blew up
- 7:47Speaker 1: and it has since then. And the well, I tell you,
- 7:50Speaker 1: the most interesting part of This is Christy Nome, who
- 7:54Speaker 1: immediately a Department of she's the czar of Department of
- 8:02Speaker 1: Homeland Security. She's running and so she immediately got on
- 8:06Speaker 1: the air, I mean literally within a couple of hours
- 8:08Speaker 1: and said that the cops were justified that this woman
- 8:13Speaker 1: tried to run the police officer over, attempted to kill
- 8:17Speaker 1: the police officer, that she was a professional agitator. You know,
- 8:23Speaker 1: I didn't think there was anything a professional agitator or
- 8:26Speaker 1: she talked about professional agitators that were there. I didn't think.
- 8:31Speaker 1: You know, where do you go? I actually looked it
- 8:32Speaker 1: up amy a professional agitator. There is such a thing.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Charles State Northridge. Yeah, offers a degree in agitation. They
- 8:40Speaker 1: do not, and it's certified. You can be. And if
- 8:43Speaker 1: you go to Indeed, look under the word agitation and
- 8:47Speaker 1: you will see people saying professional certified agitator will work
- 8:52Speaker 1: by the hour, half day, full day, reasonable prices for agitation.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I could do that, No, but you're not certified. That's problem.
- 9:03Speaker 1: You don't have my certification. By the way, there's a certificate,
- 9:06Speaker 1: there's a certification, and then there's a degree. And I
- 9:09Speaker 1: think you may be able to get a graduate degree
- 9:11Speaker 1: in agitation. I don't know. I love it. Yeah, that's
- 9:15Speaker 1: your professional agitator. It's interesting how she can label her
- 9:21Speaker 1: that without knowing anything about the I know they made that,
- 9:25Speaker 1: instead of saying, hey, we have to do an investigation. Uh.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Even those that are on the other side of the
- 9:32Speaker 1: coin who say it looks like this, but we have
- 9:34Speaker 1: to investigate it.
- 9:35Speaker 4: I think both sides came out too quickly.
- 9:37Speaker 1: I agree, but let me give you the other side,
- 9:40Speaker 1: and they are they ended if we ended it with
- 9:42Speaker 1: we have to do an investigation. Christin Homes said nothing
- 9:46Speaker 1: about investigation. The decision was made self defense. It's over.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Are we going to see the FBI even investigate this?
- 9:54Speaker 1: I don't even know. I would hope, I think there.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Tom Holman said he wants to see an investigation.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I would.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Uh.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Well, Tom Homan works for Christino.
- 10:03Speaker 4: So and he said, let's do an investigation.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Right, and we'll see which way it goes. As I said,
- 10:09Speaker 1: I hope that there's an investigation. Truly, it's interesting how
- 10:13Speaker 1: she can label her that without knowing anything about the sea.
- 10:18Speaker 1: I know they made that instead of saying, hey, we
- 10:22Speaker 1: have to do an investigation. Even those that are on
- 10:26Speaker 1: the other side of the coin, who say it looks
- 10:28Speaker 1: like this, but we have to investigate it.
- 10:30Speaker 4: I think both sides came out too quickly.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I agree, but let me give you the other side,
- 10:35Speaker 1: and they they ended if we ended it with we
- 10:38Speaker 1: have to do an investigation. Christinome said nothing about investigation.
- 10:42Speaker 1: The decision was made self defense. It's over. Are we
- 10:47Speaker 1: going to see the FBI even investigate this? I don't
- 10:49Speaker 1: even know.
- 10:50Speaker 4: I would hope, I think there. Tom Holman said he
- 10:52Speaker 4: wants to see an investigation.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I would. Uh. Well, Tom Homan works for Christino.
- 10:58Speaker 4: So and he said, let's do an investigation, right.
- 11:01Speaker 1: And we'll see which way it goes. As I said,
- 11:04Speaker 1: I hope that there's an investigation. Truly. I'll tell you
- 11:07Speaker 1: the most controversial part of this I'm going to cover
- 11:11Speaker 1: that at seven o'clock, of course, was that stetson that
- 11:15Speaker 1: Christinam was wearing that cowboy hat when she was in
- 11:19Speaker 1: front of the cameras. You didn't like that, you know,
- 11:22Speaker 1: I thought that was a little bit strange for the
- 11:25Speaker 1: head of a cabinet secretary to be wearing a I'd
- 11:32Speaker 1: rather I'd rather see a football helmet. Frankly, when doing
- 11:37Speaker 1: one of those press conferences. All right, moving on more
- 11:44Speaker 1: handle on the news with Amy and Me.
- 11:48Speaker 4: The US continues to pull back. Trump administration says is
- 11:52Speaker 4: going to withdraw from dozens of international organizations, announcing yesterday
- 11:58Speaker 4: that they would be suspending support for sixty six organizations
- 12:03Speaker 4: following the administration's review of participation in and funding for
- 12:08Speaker 4: international organizations, including those affiliated with the UN. Many of
- 12:12Speaker 4: those UN related agencies, commissions, and advisory panels focus on climate, labor, migration,
- 12:19Speaker 4: and other issues. The administration is categorized as catering to
- 12:23Speaker 4: diversity and woke initiatives.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Right, So this is a double hit. Not only is
- 12:28Speaker 1: it a question of woke, it's also a continuation of
- 12:31Speaker 1: the president's philosophy of non intervention. We don't want to
- 12:36Speaker 1: get involved in foreign organizations or foreign wars except when
- 12:41Speaker 1: we do. But this is part and parcel, and there's
- 12:45Speaker 1: no surprise here. I mean it would if it's perfectly
- 12:49Speaker 1: logical if you look at where the Trump administration is going.
- 12:52Speaker 1: So I don't know why people are shocked this is happening.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Marco's going to make the case to take Greenland. The
- 13:01Speaker 4: Secretary of State, Marco Rubio is going to meet with
- 13:05Speaker 4: leaders of Denmark next week. The US Secretary of State
- 13:09Speaker 4: told reporters that President Trump retains the option to address
- 13:13Speaker 4: his objective of taking control of Greenland by military means,
- 13:18Speaker 4: but he says still, as a diplomat, which is what
- 13:21Speaker 4: I am now and what we work on, we always
- 13:24Speaker 4: prefer to settle it in different ways.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Now this is dumb. It is on the administration's part.
- 13:32Speaker 1: This makes no sense. Denmark is our Greenland, and Denmark
- 13:37Speaker 1: Denmark owning Greenland, that Greenland is a basically territory of
- 13:40Speaker 1: Denmark is one of the staunchest American allies. There has
- 13:44Speaker 1: never been an issue where America didn't want a base
- 13:46Speaker 1: that it couldn't get will Greenland will give the United
- 13:49Speaker 1: States virtually everything at once, and had thirty one bases
- 13:52Speaker 1: there and US shut down thirty of them. There's this
- 13:57Speaker 1: thing about owning Greenland. It belongs to us. We want
- 14:00Speaker 1: to annex it that people are having a hard time with,
- 14:05Speaker 1: and here it goes. Denmark has said we're not for sale.
- 14:07Speaker 1: That's the other thing is I think Rubio's going in
- 14:09Speaker 1: the end, We're gonna buy Denmark. We're gonna buy Greenland
- 14:13Speaker 1: from Denmark. No, it's not for sale. How much you
- 14:16Speaker 1: charge for that anyway? And then the issue of can
- 14:19Speaker 1: you imagine an invasion of Greenland? Fifty six thousand people
- 14:25Speaker 1: live in Greenland and what kind of a force do
- 14:28Speaker 1: you bring to overrun Greenland? Now? How big is their army?
- 14:34Speaker 1: Eight hundred? I don't know, two thousand. This is absolutely fascinating.
- 14:40Speaker 1: By the way, we have bought territories before. Did you
- 14:42Speaker 1: know that? It's not as the United States has not
- 14:45Speaker 1: bought pieces of property. Alaska was bought. A check was
- 14:49Speaker 1: written to Russia for Alaska that was seven and a
- 14:53Speaker 1: half million dollars. Fifteen million dollars paid for the Louisiana
- 14:58Speaker 1: purchase in eighteen oh five.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Who do we buy that from?
- 15:01Speaker 1: France? And the Napoleon sold it to the United States? Coulse,
- 15:07Speaker 1: you needed the money. He was involved in all the wars,
- 15:08Speaker 1: and you know what are they going to do at
- 15:10Speaker 1: that point? And it doubled the land mass of the
- 15:13Speaker 1: US at that time. Both bought so there's some precedent here.
- 15:18Speaker 1: The problem is people have to want to sell it.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Russia wanted to sell Alaska. France wanted to sell that
- 15:26Speaker 1: area of the Louisiana where the Louisiana purchased and it
- 15:29Speaker 1: went all the way up was a Texas at that point.
- 15:33Speaker 1: I don't even know the parameters there, but it was huge,
- 15:36Speaker 1: double the land mass. Okay, moving on.
- 15:39Speaker 4: Flipping the food pyramid, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Junior
- 15:43Speaker 4: has announced new dietary guidelines focused on promoting whole foods, proteins,
- 15:48Speaker 4: and healthy fats. At a news conference yesterday, he said,
- 15:51Speaker 4: eat real food. The administration unveiled its new food pyramid
- 15:55Speaker 4: has red meat, cheese, vegetables, fruits all up at the top,
- 15:59Speaker 4: and grains down at the bottom.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Yep. Although you know, I believe in this because I
- 16:06Speaker 1: eat a lot of burritos frozen burritos, and grains are
- 16:11Speaker 1: part of the burrito wrapping, you know, the tortilla part
- 16:15Speaker 1: and meat inside. So I'm a big fan of this.
- 16:19Speaker 4: I think the big push was to not do as
- 16:22Speaker 4: many processed foods and sugars and that kind of stuff.
- 16:24Speaker 4: That's what they talked about a lot.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, I just ignored that part.
- 16:29Speaker 4: Because you like the sugar and the processed foods.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Oh how do you live without sugar and process foods?
- 16:34Speaker 4: Okay? There you go. A rather unexpected turn of events.
- 16:39Speaker 4: Nick Reiner, the son of Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle,
- 16:43Speaker 4: who were murdered last month at their home in Brentwood,
- 16:47Speaker 4: was supposed to be a rain yesterday, and so they
- 16:49Speaker 4: go to court and then his high profile criminal defense lawyer,
- 16:52Speaker 4: Alan Jackson said, I'm out. He has taken himself off
- 16:57Speaker 4: the case. He said he had no choice but to
- 17:00Speaker 4: step down of counsel of record, and then outside the
- 17:04Speaker 4: courthouse after the hearing, Jackson said his team wished Nick
- 17:08Speaker 4: Rener the very very best moving forward and insisted that
- 17:11Speaker 4: his former client in the state of California is not
- 17:15Speaker 4: guilty if murdered. So he's got a public defender now instead.
- 17:19Speaker 1: What does that tell you that he has public defender,
- 17:22Speaker 1: Because in order to get a public defender, you have
- 17:23Speaker 1: to be destitute, you have to have no money. And
- 17:27Speaker 1: so clearly the way I look at it, there wasn't
- 17:31Speaker 1: enough money to pay him. I mean guys like Alan
- 17:35Speaker 1: Jackson who are known now These are seven eight, nine
- 17:38Speaker 1: hundred dollars an hour lawyers, and it takes and the
- 17:42Speaker 1: retainers are enormous. So he's gone and he doesn't say why.
- 17:47Speaker 1: By the way, he doesn't have to say because the
- 17:48Speaker 1: client isn't paying, he goes your honor. We just have
- 17:50Speaker 1: a conflict and I no longer am able to represent
- 17:53Speaker 1: my client. And the judge says, okay, you're gone.
- 17:56Speaker 4: Well we know that. Well we don't know, no, But
- 17:58Speaker 4: I would guess that Nick Rener doesn't have any money,
- 18:01Speaker 4: but the Rob Reiners estate probably does, so maybe the
- 18:05Speaker 4: kids put the stop to paying him. Speculation, speculation, I
- 18:11Speaker 4: don't know.
- 18:12Speaker 1: And whether he had access to the money at all,
- 18:14Speaker 1: which my guess is no. And who has access to
- 18:18Speaker 1: that money, Well, it'd probably be someone in an accounting
- 18:22Speaker 1: firm or the rest of the family, or there had
- 18:25Speaker 1: to be a trust that it will written. In any case,
- 18:27Speaker 1: we'll probably find out a whole lot more about that.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Is this thing pans out continuing with more handle on
- 18:32Speaker 1: the news, Amy Neil is not here back on Monday and.
- 18:35Speaker 4: Me, Yeah, Russia is not happy with us. The US
- 18:38Speaker 4: military seized a Russian flagged oil tanker in the North
- 18:42Speaker 4: Atlantic yesterday. The ship, called the below One, was boarded
- 18:47Speaker 4: by US forces in a joint operation with the UK's
- 18:50Speaker 4: military around seven am Eastern time. It was sailing under
- 18:55Speaker 4: a Russian flag in international waters between Scotland and Iceland.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Russia's Transport ministry said no state has the right to
- 19:04Speaker 4: use force against vessels duly registered in the jurisdiction of
- 19:08Speaker 4: other states. This apparently had Venezuelan oil on it.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Yeah, now this gets kind of interesting because it wasn't
- 19:14Speaker 1: a Russian ship. It became a Russian ship after it
- 19:18Speaker 1: was being chased by the United States primarily. And this
- 19:22Speaker 1: is sanctioned oil. I mean straight out there. It is
- 19:25Speaker 1: under international and certainly American sanctions. So this is what
- 19:30Speaker 1: is this number three that the US has picked up
- 19:34Speaker 1: in terms of the tankers I believe oil. Yeah, so, yeah,
- 19:39Speaker 1: we'll see. I mean, there's not a whole lot of
- 19:42Speaker 1: I don't think there is a whole big argument that
- 19:45Speaker 1: Russia has. But you know there's the flag. They painted
- 19:48Speaker 1: the Russian flag on the side of the boat. You
- 19:51Speaker 1: know that out came the paint rushing. They just got
- 19:53Speaker 1: out the cans and that's exactly what they doubt, that's
- 19:56Speaker 1: exactly what they did.
- 20:00Speaker 4: More kids in class. The University of California has enrolled
- 20:05Speaker 4: a record number of Californians. For the fall of twenty
- 20:08Speaker 4: twenty five, more than three hundred one thousand students went
- 20:11Speaker 4: to one of UC's ten campuses. In the fall, that's
- 20:16Speaker 4: the largest number in history, an increase year over year
- 20:19Speaker 4: of sixteen hundred and eighty six students and continuing a
- 20:23Speaker 4: long term trend, new female undergrads outnumbered the males twenty
- 20:28Speaker 4: eight thousand, three hundred and one to twenty two thousand
- 20:30Speaker 4: and seven forty seven.
- 20:33Speaker 1: And blacks and Native Americans gone down.
- 20:37Speaker 4: I wonder why that is.
- 20:39Speaker 1: You know, it can argue cultural. I mean, I don't
- 20:41Speaker 1: think you know, oh hey there's a Native American gone.
- 20:45Speaker 1: I don't think that's the case. But I think it's
- 20:47Speaker 1: pretty complicated stuff. It has to do with socioeconomic issues,
- 20:51Speaker 1: it has to do with cultural issues. It's you know,
- 20:55Speaker 1: we don't have the time to deal with it here.
- 20:57Speaker 1: You know, growing up, for example, if you're growing up
- 21:00Speaker 1: and a white family that has money and you've had tutors,
- 21:03Speaker 1: you have a much bigger better chance of getting into
- 21:05Speaker 1: a good school than if you come up from the
- 21:07Speaker 1: inner city and you're working at fourteen, and you know,
- 21:10Speaker 1: you don't see your mom because she's there, or your
- 21:12Speaker 1: dad's not around, your mom's working three jobs. You come
- 21:16Speaker 1: from different places, not just one issue.
- 21:18Speaker 4: Yeah, because the number of Latino, Native, Hawaiian and Pacific
- 21:22Speaker 4: Islander students was also up. Well, California is losing millions,
- 21:32Speaker 4: hundreds of millions. The state was set to revoke seventeen
- 21:36Speaker 4: thousand commercial driver licenses issued to immigrants by January fifth,
- 21:42Speaker 4: but instead the state extended that deadline because there's a
- 21:46Speaker 4: threat of a civil class action lawsuit by immigrant rights groups.
- 21:49Speaker 4: So they said, now, we're not going to do it
- 21:50Speaker 4: by Monday. Well, the federal government said, yeah, do it
- 21:53Speaker 4: by Monday, and they didn't. And because California missed that deadline,
- 21:57Speaker 4: federal officials have announced that they're withholding one hundred and
- 22:00Speaker 4: sixty million dollars in transportation funds to the state, you know.
- 22:04Speaker 1: And I have a question about this because where do
- 22:06Speaker 1: the Feds get jurisdiction on this. I mean, if I
- 22:09Speaker 1: remember back in law school, you know, under the Commerce Clause,
- 22:12Speaker 1: they can do anything they want. But the only argument
- 22:15Speaker 1: is truck drivers go over state lines, therefore we control
- 22:20Speaker 1: and so I guess that works. But this is a
- 22:24Speaker 1: typical I mean, you're going to see this fight continuing
- 22:26Speaker 1: on and on and on during this or any Republican
- 22:30Speaker 1: administration versus California. That is the poster child of the
- 22:34Speaker 1: national infighting, and so no surprise there at absolutely none.
- 22:40Speaker 4: Potholes are popping up all over La. After days of
- 22:44Speaker 4: heavy rain comes the potholes opening up across the city.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Number of drivers have reported what they're calling sudden impacts,
- 22:52Speaker 4: including a guy named Giuseppe de Morey. He said he
- 22:54Speaker 4: was driving to the farmers market Friday night. He heard
- 22:57Speaker 4: a loud thump, blew out a tire and his rim.
- 23:01Speaker 4: He said, he hit a pothole. Didn't see it. It
- 23:03Speaker 4: was dark, the roadway's black, it's black at night. Street
- 23:07Speaker 4: is black, and he hit it. And these repairs are
- 23:11Speaker 4: a bit spendy, like for fixing the tires three hundred
- 23:16Speaker 4: and two about one thousand dollars. Oh yeah, ending all
- 23:18Speaker 4: the rim and everything.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Yeah, suspension. Now, when I owned the Persian Palace, I
- 23:24Speaker 1: never had to worry about potholes, and because well, first
- 23:27Speaker 1: of all, there was one major street going into my
- 23:30Speaker 1: neighborhood and that's the one that got potted up. And
- 23:33Speaker 1: within literally forty minutes after the rain stopped, they fixed
- 23:37Speaker 1: the potholes.
- 23:38Speaker 4: Why they are pretty quick about getting them, especially see them.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Especially in my neighborhood. Because the council person who represented
- 23:44Speaker 1: the district was in my neighborhood. And let me tell
- 23:48Speaker 1: you how quickly potholes are repaired.
- 23:53Speaker 4: Uh, maybe a solution in sight. A bipartisan coalition in
- 23:58Speaker 4: the House is voted to push forward measure to revive
- 24:01Speaker 4: and enhanced pandemic eras subsidy that lowered health insurance costs
- 24:07Speaker 4: for about twenty two million people in America. The vote
- 24:11Speaker 4: was two twenty one to two h five. It was
- 24:14Speaker 4: a key test before the bill gets passed, which is
- 24:17Speaker 4: expected to happen today. Four GOP lawmakers joined with the
- 24:21Speaker 4: Democrats to sign that discharge petition. They did that last month.
- 24:26Speaker 4: That's going to force the vote. The four who joined
- 24:29Speaker 4: in with the Democrats said doing nothing is not an
- 24:31Speaker 4: option as many of their constituents are facing soaring health
- 24:35Speaker 4: insurance premiums.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, the speaker can stop a vote from going
- 24:40Speaker 1: to the floor straight out. I'm not going to bring
- 24:42Speaker 1: a vote on the floor. It's got that power. That's
- 24:44Speaker 1: what the discharge petition is about, is to go around
- 24:48Speaker 1: the speaker very rarely as it used. And Mike Johnson
- 24:51Speaker 1: is fighting this thing. Crazy. There are You've got most
- 24:57Speaker 1: of the Republicans are against the situation of the subsidies.
- 25:01Speaker 1: And I have not yet heard about the increase of
- 25:06Speaker 1: insurance rates. I don't know. They are up, and they're
- 25:10Speaker 1: up dramatically, but I haven't seen the pushback yet of
- 25:13Speaker 1: these rates because it was I'm.
- 25:15Speaker 4: Wondering if that's because people haven't gotten their bills yet.
- 25:17Speaker 1: I think that may be because when people get their bills,
- 25:19Speaker 1: and also they're looking at their health insurance and the
- 25:22Speaker 1: premiums have tripled or doubled. Yeah, and the Republics are
- 25:26Speaker 1: going to get nailed on this if they don't allow
- 25:27Speaker 1: they're going to allow the extension for a period of time.
- 25:30Speaker 1: I can't imagine they wouldn't. But you know, I've been
- 25:32Speaker 1: wrong before, like every day, like most of the time
- 25:37Speaker 1: when I opened my.
- 25:37Speaker 4: Mouth, Oliver, did you get that on tape?
- 25:40Speaker 1: Yeah? And okay, yeah, and certainly when I broadcast Handle
- 25:44Speaker 1: on the Law Head.
- 25:46Speaker 4: Into the Hills to find a new candidate for mayor.
- 25:49Speaker 4: Reality star Spencer Pratt, who used to be on the Hills,
- 25:52Speaker 4: has launched a campaign for mayor of Los Angeles. He
- 25:56Speaker 4: made the announcement yesterday at the let Us Burn Rally
- 26:01Speaker 4: or they Let Us Burn Rally in Pacific Palisades on
- 26:05Speaker 4: the anniversary of the wildfire that destroyed his home.
- 26:10Speaker 1: I don't know who he is, and I don't know
- 26:12Speaker 1: the television show.
- 26:15Speaker 4: Well he's He's actually been on with h I think
- 26:20Speaker 4: with John a couple of times. Pretty interesting guy. But
- 26:26Speaker 4: he just said he's fed up with everything that's happened
- 26:29Speaker 4: since the fires. Again, he lost his home and he
- 26:32Speaker 4: wants he wants to see change. He says he's going
- 26:34Speaker 4: to be Mayorbess's worst nightmare.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Okay, I hope, So, I don't care who it is.
- 26:42Speaker 4: Uh, Mike Tariko is going to be super, super busy.
- 26:48Speaker 4: His network, NBC has the broadcast rights to two of
- 26:52Speaker 4: the biggest events on the sports calendar, and he's going
- 26:55Speaker 4: to have major roles in both. He is going to
- 26:59Speaker 4: be hosted the Super Bowl and Olympic coverage on the
- 27:04Speaker 4: same day, Sunday, February eighth.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Now, how do you do that?
- 27:09Speaker 4: I don't know. But he's going to be doing play
- 27:10Speaker 4: by play at the Super Bowl in Santa Clara, and
- 27:14Speaker 4: then once the game is over and the Lombardi Trophy
- 27:17Speaker 4: is presented, he's gonna shift into Olympics mode and Hope
- 27:22Speaker 4: hosts the prime time in Milan from the field because
- 27:26Speaker 4: that's when the Winter Olympics get underway.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Oh okay, so he's obviously not going to make it
- 27:32Speaker 1: to Milan in time to host it.
- 27:34Speaker 4: No, he does such a good job.
- 27:36Speaker 1: Guys, he's a great broadcaster. I like him a lot,
- 27:40Speaker 1: and he's really good.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Oh, it's Girl Scout cookie time. Apparently this year there's
- 27:50Speaker 4: a new flavor called Explore Moores, a Rocky Road ice
- 27:55Speaker 4: cream inspired cookie sandwich filled with chocolate, marshmallow and toasted
- 27:59Speaker 4: all my cream.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Actually sounds good. Sound It could be coyingly sweet. It
- 28:04Speaker 1: could be way too sweet, but I think it may
- 28:08Speaker 1: sound good if they unsweetened it for a bit, right
- 28:12Speaker 1: or bring it down.
- 28:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I do love a good thin mint. So these
- 28:16Speaker 4: locals Girl Scouts are going to start taking orders. It
- 28:20Speaker 4: says Tuesday, and is that last Tuesday. In person delivery
- 28:26Speaker 4: and booth scale sales are scheduled to start on February first,
- 28:30Speaker 4: so you'll be seeing them outside the grocery store.
- 28:32Speaker 1: You know, there used to be boxes sold at KFI.
- 28:36Speaker 1: A few people would you know, have girls and would
- 28:39Speaker 1: sell boxes. Now i'd buy them from KFI.
- 28:43Speaker 4: I wouldn't unless the kid came.
- 28:44Speaker 1: In Oh, Okay, I never thought of it.
- 28:48Speaker 4: I know that the parents did it because there was
- 28:49Speaker 4: there's a lot of pressure on the kids to sell those.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Cookies, huge pressure.
- 28:53Speaker 4: And I always said, if you come in, bring the
- 28:56Speaker 4: kid in and have them sell the cookies to me,
- 28:59Speaker 4: because that was part of the d is. They were
- 29:00Speaker 4: learning how to communicate and learning how to sale. I'd
- 29:03Speaker 4: buy all of them.
- 29:04Speaker 3: I don't want to brag, yes, but I was top
- 29:07Speaker 3: cookie sales girl in my troop.
- 29:09Speaker 4: I don't doubt that for a second hand.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Wow, So would you sholl that thin mint's smoans? Those
- 29:15Speaker 1: are very bigs.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Oh but yeah, no, I sold a ton.
- 29:23Speaker 4: I have a patch to prove it. Do you still
- 29:26Speaker 4: have it? Oh? Yeah? And did your daughter Danica do
- 29:31Speaker 4: girl Scouts? And she did brownies and that was it
- 29:33Speaker 4: and she was done. Yeah.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Well, I get brownies when I was a cup scalp,
- 29:37Speaker 1: but not in quite the same way that. Let's just
- 29:40Speaker 1: move on, okay.
- 29:42Speaker 4: Preservation can be deadly. Common preservatives used to keep food
- 29:48Speaker 4: safe and extend shelf life maybe linked to a higher
- 29:51Speaker 4: risk of several cancers and type two diabetes. According to
- 29:55Speaker 4: new studies from France. These are preservatives found in French
- 30:02Speaker 4: and European markets, but also in the US. That's scary.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Well, everything gives you cancer. Everything. The only thing that
- 30:11Speaker 1: doesn't give you cancer, it seems, is cancer. Other than that,
- 30:16Speaker 1: everything you eat, drink, participate in bathe in is cancer, causing.
- 30:24Speaker 4: Astronauts Mike Finkey and Zena Cardman going to have to
- 30:28Speaker 4: wait a little longer to step outside the space station.
- 30:32Speaker 4: They were scheduled to do a six and a half
- 30:34Speaker 4: hour spacewalk to take photos and do some projects outside
- 30:37Speaker 4: the International Space Station today. It would have been the
- 30:40Speaker 4: first operation outside the space station this year, but that
- 30:44Speaker 4: got scrapped. Apparently somebody on board has a medical condition.
- 30:49Speaker 1: I'm telling you, when we find out what it is,
- 30:52Speaker 1: I'm willing to bet that is fear of heights that
- 30:55Speaker 1: this astronaut is going to get nailed with. They don't
- 30:59Speaker 1: tell us what it is. People throw up a lot.
- 31:04Speaker 1: You know what is about half the people get.
- 31:07Speaker 4: The on the space station?
- 31:09Speaker 1: They do yeah, I mean yeah, when they go, there's
- 31:13Speaker 1: a huge number that gets sick. There's a space a
- 31:16Speaker 1: weightless sickness they have. I think it's called weightless sickness.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Technical yes, yes, I think we're done guys. Yep, that's it.
- 31:26Speaker 1: We are finished. Coming up of course, the story that
- 31:29Speaker 1: happened yesterday, and that was the ICE agent shooting fatally
- 31:34Speaker 1: shooting a woman at a at an event, if you will.
- 31:39Speaker 1: It was an ICE immigration raid and she was there
- 31:44Speaker 1: and she either was someone who went after an ICE agent,
- 31:48Speaker 1: tried to kill him, run him over, or someone who
- 31:51Speaker 1: was in a cit and tried to drive away. And
- 31:53Speaker 1: we'll talk about what happened. You've been listening to The
- 31:57Speaker 1: Bill Handle Show. Catch My Show Monday through Friday, six
- 32:00Speaker 1: am to nine am, and any time on demand on
