- 0:00Speaker 1: Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor,
- 0:03Speaker 1: and if the dew be on the fleece only, and
- 0:06Speaker 1: it be dry upon all the earth beside, then I
- 0:09Speaker 1: shall know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand,
- 0:13Speaker 1: as thou hast said. Judges 6.37 Lord, today I will
- 0:20Speaker 1: be aware of the subtle signs of disobedience that rob
- 0:23Speaker 1: me of my peace and safety. No matter how small
- 0:27Speaker 1: the sin seems, I will remove it from my life.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Like Gideon, I will work as the Lord's servant and
- 0:35Speaker 1: remove the idols from around me. I declare that the
- 0:39Speaker 1: Spirit of God will rise up within me as I
- 0:43Speaker 1: stand for what is right. I will not be intimidated
- 0:47Speaker 1: by those who move in deceit, for I know that
- 0:50Speaker 1: the commander of the Lord's army is with me. Rise up, Lord,
- 0:55Speaker 1: and surround me. with men and women who have the
- 0:59Speaker 1: same drive and passion to win and to take victory
- 1:03Speaker 1: for your namesake. I choose to thank you in advance
- 1:07Speaker 1: that you have already prepared your army of kingdom-minded influencers
- 1:12Speaker 1: to move forward with boldness and take back what is
- 1:16Speaker 1: rightfully ours. I am a person of valor. I am

- 1:51Speaker 2: Gideon, the trivial judge. In our last story, We learned
- 1:56Speaker 2: how Jabin and his general, Sisera, oppressed Israel for over
- 2:00Speaker 2: 20 years. The Lord sent Deborah, a mighty and wise woman.
- 2:06Speaker 2: He also sent Barak, the commander of Israel's armies. They
- 2:11Speaker 2: fought valiantly against Sisera and his 900 chariots. Sisera fled
- 2:16Speaker 2: and was in the tent of a woman named Jael
- 2:19Speaker 2: and killed in his sleep with a tent peg through
- 2:22Speaker 2: his skull. In this story, we learn about the oppression
- 2:26Speaker 2: of Midian against Israel. God calls an unlikely judge, Gideon,
- 2:31Speaker 2: to gather an army, as inspired by the book of Judges.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:42Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. In our last episode, we
- 2:46Speaker 3: heard how God worked through the faith and wisdom of Deborah,
- 2:49Speaker 3: the deliverer. and the courage of Barak to free the
- 2:52Speaker 3: Israelites from Canaanite oppression. We also saw how God used
- 2:57Speaker 3: a foreign woman by the name of Jael to defeat
- 3:00Speaker 3: the Canaanite general, Caesarea. It's a story of how God
- 3:04Speaker 3: can work and does work through unlikely unknown people to
- 3:07Speaker 3: bring about His will and how even the most insurmountable
- 3:11Speaker 3: obstacles can be overcome when we trust in God for
- 3:14Speaker 3: the result. Today, We're going to hear about another judge
- 3:18Speaker 3: or deliverer that God raises up to free his people,
- 3:21Speaker 3: a man who wouldn't have made anyone's list of who's who.
- 3:25Speaker 3: He was not a great candidate to lead Israel into battle.
- 3:29Speaker 3: His name is Gideon, and through the story of Gideon,
- 3:33Speaker 3: we'll once again see how God can use even the small,
- 3:36Speaker 3: the weak, and insignificant to accomplish great and mighty things.
- 3:41Speaker 3: So let's listen now to today's reading.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Israel lived in peace. They worked the fertile land, built
- 3:49Speaker 2: new homes for their children, and worshipped God. However, compromise
- 3:55Speaker 2: began to creep into the house of Israel. A few
- 3:58Speaker 2: idols were brought into the temple, and slowly the people
- 4:01Speaker 2: began to stray away from God. It was not deliberate,
- 4:05Speaker 2: but gradual and unassuming. Soon Israel found themselves caught in
- 4:10Speaker 2: another cycle of total depravity. They did only what they
- 4:15Speaker 2: thought good for themselves, not for one another. They became
- 4:18Speaker 2: selfish and self-pleasing, and turned from God and His law.
- 4:24Speaker 2: If history has informed anything, it is that turning away
- 4:28Speaker 2: from God is the first step towards destruction. An evil
- 4:33Speaker 2: was lurking in the caves above Israel, like a dragon
- 4:36Speaker 2: hidden in darkness. The Midianites were dwelling secretly in dens
- 4:41Speaker 2: carved in the mountains, evil laughs and battle cries echoed
- 4:46Speaker 2: through the canyons, and campfires lit up the mountain range.
- 4:50Speaker 2: The evil horde descended upon Israel like a swarm. Whenever
- 4:54Speaker 2: Israel planted crops, the Midianites and the people of the
- 4:58Speaker 2: east would rise against them to devour everything in sight.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Like pirates, they would pillage, rape, and burn Israel into dust.
- 5:08Speaker 2: For seven years, Israel desperately worked to provide their families
- 5:12Speaker 2: with safety and food, only to have them stripped away
- 5:16Speaker 2: in a storm of Midianite evil. They would hide their
- 5:20Speaker 2: livestock and food in their tents, but the Midianites were
- 5:23Speaker 2: like locusts, eating up all of it. The people of
- 5:28Speaker 2: Israel cried out to the God they had abandoned. Once again,
- 5:32Speaker 2: out of desperation, not love. They called upon the God
- 5:36Speaker 2: that parted seas to save them. One morning, an angel
- 5:41Speaker 2: of the Lord sat under the shade of a terebinth tree.
- 5:44Speaker 2: A few yards away, Gideon was beating out wheat and
- 5:48Speaker 2: storing it in a winepress to hide from the Midianites.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Gideon was smaller in frame, paranoid, and constantly looking over
- 5:56Speaker 2: his shoulder. He belonged to the weakest tribe in Israel,
- 6:00Speaker 2: and he was the weakest brother of his family. The
- 6:04Speaker 2: Lord watched Gideon work frantically, shaking in fear and fumbling
- 6:08Speaker 2: about his work. The angel of the Lord spoke to
- 6:12Speaker 2: him from under the tree, saying, God is with you,
- 6:15Speaker 2: mighty man of valor. Gideon leapt in the air out
- 6:19Speaker 2: of fear, then saw it was not an enemy. Gideon
- 6:23Speaker 2: walked closer and said, If the Lord is with us,
- 6:27Speaker 2: then why are we living like this? God has forsaken
- 6:30Speaker 2: us and given us to Midian like a treat to
- 6:32Speaker 2: a dog. Gideon spoke boldly, for he was skilled in
- 6:36Speaker 2: the art of whining and complaining. The Lord smiled and
- 6:40Speaker 2: said to him, There is might in you. Take it
- 6:44Speaker 2: and save Israel from Midian. I am sending you. Gideon laughed.
- 6:51Speaker 2: How could I save Israel? he asked. My clan is
- 6:55Speaker 2: the weakest in this region, and I am the runt
- 6:58Speaker 2: of my father's house. No, you have the wrong guy.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Gideon continued to laugh and began walking away. God said,
- 7:08Speaker 2: I shall be with you, Gideon, and you shall strike
- 7:11Speaker 2: Midian down as a single man. Gideon turned back to
- 7:17Speaker 2: him and said, If you truly are the Lord, and
- 7:21Speaker 2: I am truly called to be this hero of yours,
- 7:26Speaker 2: then show me a sign. Gideon asked the Lord to
- 7:32Speaker 2: stay while he went back into his house to prepare
- 7:35Speaker 2: an offering. He prepared meat and cakes. He put the
- 7:39Speaker 2: meat in baskets and its broth in a pot and
- 7:41Speaker 2: rushed it back to the Lord. Gideon placed the offering
- 7:45Speaker 2: on a rock next to him. Pour the broth over
- 7:49Speaker 2: the offering, God said. So Gideon made all of the
- 7:52Speaker 2: meat and cakes sopping wet, dripping completely with broth. Then
- 7:57Speaker 2: the angel of the Lord reached out the tip of
- 8:00Speaker 2: his staff and lightly touched the offering. Immediately, like a
- 8:05Speaker 2: match to oil, the offering was consumed by flames. Gideon
- 8:09Speaker 2: started at the fire in amazement, then turned back to
- 8:12Speaker 2: the Lord, but he had vanished in an instant. At
- 8:16Speaker 2: that moment, Gideon had perceived that it really was an
- 8:19Speaker 2: angel of the Lord he was speaking to, and fear
- 8:22Speaker 2: came over him. That night the Lord spoke to Gideon
- 8:26Speaker 2: in the quiet. In your town there are many idols.
- 8:31Speaker 2: You must remove them immediately, God whispered. Gideon, too frightened
- 8:37Speaker 2: of his father and older brothers to do it in
- 8:39Speaker 2: the daytime, snuck into the temple at night. Gideon was
- 8:43Speaker 2: beating with sweat and constantly looking over his shoulder. He
- 8:47Speaker 2: tied a rope around the altar of Baal. It was
- 8:50Speaker 2: a massive statue looming over Gideon in the darkness. His
- 8:55Speaker 2: torch illuminated the face of Baal staring down at him.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Gideon cringed and tied the other end of the rope
- 9:01Speaker 2: to his father's bull and slapped it. It ripped the
- 9:05Speaker 2: altar of Baal from its foundation and came crashing down,
- 9:08Speaker 2: shattering into a thousand pieces. Gideon also cut down other
- 9:13Speaker 2: idols that dwelled in the house. Then Gideon took another
- 9:17Speaker 2: one of his father's bulls and offered it to the Lord.
- 9:21Speaker 2: The men in town rose early in the morning and
- 9:24Speaker 2: saw that the altar was shattered. Who has done this?
- 9:28Speaker 2: they shouted. The men teemed with anger. Who did this?
- 9:32Speaker 2: they shouted again. The people began to gather around the
- 9:35Speaker 2: site of the broken idol. They searched around and spoke
- 9:39Speaker 2: to every person except one, Gideon. He has done this,
- 9:44Speaker 2: they said with their jaws clenched. The men knocked on
- 9:47Speaker 2: the door of Gideon's father, Joash. They burst through the
- 9:51Speaker 2: door and said, Where is your son? He shall die
- 9:54Speaker 2: for what he has done. Joash panicked. He wanted to
- 9:58Speaker 2: protect his son, but did not want to. to invoke
- 10:00Speaker 2: the wrath of the city on himself. So do you
- 10:04Speaker 2: fight all of Baal's battles? Joash said, fumbling around his words.
- 10:08Speaker 2: If he is a god, wouldn't he want to deal
- 10:10Speaker 2: with Gideon himself? The men listened and stormed off. Meanwhile,
- 10:16Speaker 2: the Midianite horde crossed the Jordan River and camped in
- 10:20Speaker 2: a valley nearby. The Amalekites, along with some mysterious people
- 10:24Speaker 2: from the east, joined forces with them and camped there.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Their presence was felt by the people of Israel. Fear
- 10:32Speaker 2: and hysteria ensued, yet something happened to Gideon. A small
- 10:37Speaker 2: spark lit up within him. Something he had never felt
- 10:40Speaker 2: before flickered inside him. The Spirit of God clothed Gideon
- 10:45Speaker 2: like a suit of armor. Gideon's once cowardly demeanor shifted slightly.
- 10:50Speaker 2: In a moment of bravery, Gideon called for the armies
- 10:53Speaker 2: of Israel with the authority of a true judge called
- 10:56Speaker 2: by God. He sounded the trumpet of war and it
- 11:00Speaker 2: echoed across the cities of Israel. Gideon sent messengers throughout
- 11:04Speaker 2: the land to gather an army. The Spirit of God
- 11:07Speaker 2: flew like an eagle across the country, igniting a fire
- 11:12Speaker 2: of hope in the hearts of Israel. Men of war
- 11:15Speaker 2: gathered to Gideon. The tribes of Manasseh, Asher, Zebulun, and
- 11:20Speaker 2: Naphtali picked up their swords and marched. Soon a vast
- 11:24Speaker 2: army of 32,000 men stood at attention before Gideon, and
- 11:29Speaker 2: he stood amazed by God. The battle was near, and
- 11:33Speaker 2: the men were ready to follow Gideon to death and glory.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Gideon retreated to a secret place to speak with God alone.
- 11:41Speaker 2: The same self-doubt that Moses once had crippled the heart
- 11:45Speaker 2: of Gideon. How can it be me? he whispered in prayer. Lord,
- 11:49Speaker 2: if you will truly save Israel by my hand, show
- 11:53Speaker 2: me a sign. So Gideon brought out a fleece of
- 11:56Speaker 2: wool and set it on the floor. Gideon said, If
- 11:59Speaker 2: you make this fleece wet on the dry ground, I
- 12:02Speaker 2: will know it is you, and you have sent me.
- 12:05Speaker 2: God did not enjoy being tested, but he wanted Gideon's
- 12:09Speaker 2: heart to be comfort. So he made the fleece wet
- 12:12Speaker 2: and kept the ground dry. Gideon spoke again, saying, Do
- 12:17Speaker 2: not be angry with me, but could you now make
- 12:20Speaker 2: the fleece dry and the ground wet? So God did
- 12:24Speaker 2: as Gideon asked. This was a small reassurance that Gideon
- 12:28Speaker 2: was supported by the God of all creation. Gideon rose
- 12:32Speaker 2: to his feet, pulled his shoulders back, and marched towards
- 12:36Speaker 2: his army.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Forty years had passed since God delivered his people from
- 12:42Speaker 3: the Canaanites under the leadership of Deborah and Barak. Life
- 12:46Speaker 3: was good. There was peace and prosperity. But eventually, the
- 12:51Speaker 3: people once again turned to other gods and brought God's
- 12:54Speaker 3: judgment upon themselves. The peace that they had enjoyed for
- 12:58Speaker 3: so long crumbled. Midianites, Amalekites, and people from the east
- 13:03Speaker 3: began to loot their crops and livestock, leaving Israel in
- 13:06Speaker 3: a desperate situation. These foreign enemies had placed their own
- 13:10Speaker 3: gods in the temple. They had replaced Yahweh with idols. These,
- 13:14Speaker 3: of course, were just man-made sculptures whose only power was
- 13:17Speaker 3: to destroy the people's relationship with the only true God.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Israel worshipped false deities, and these deities failed them. For
- 13:27Speaker 3: seven years, the Midianites pillaged and plundered until God's children
- 13:31Speaker 3: cried out to the God that they had forgotten. God
- 13:35Speaker 3: heard their cries and sent a prophet to remind them
- 13:37Speaker 3: of who he was, what he had done, and how
- 13:40Speaker 3: they had disobeyed him. God could have stopped right there
- 13:43Speaker 3: and just sent judgment as the price of their disobedience.
- 13:47Speaker 3: But God in his grace, God in his great mercy,
- 13:50Speaker 3: came once again to rescue his children and he sent
- 13:53Speaker 3: an angel to a man by the name of Gideon.
- 13:57Speaker 3: Gideon's first response was to question the angel and to
- 14:00Speaker 3: ask why God had abandoned his people. His words are
- 14:04Speaker 3: reminiscent of Moses' words to God in the desert. Why
- 14:07Speaker 3: did you bring us all this way and leave us
- 14:08Speaker 3: here to die? But God pressed the issue. He tells
- 14:12Speaker 3: Gideon that there is greatness in him. Even though Gideon
- 14:15Speaker 3: was the least of the least of his own tribe,
- 14:18Speaker 3: God said that he had chosen him to save Israel.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Gideon knew that he was not a man of physical
- 14:25Speaker 3: significance or strength. And at first he refuses to do
- 14:29Speaker 3: the job. But God tells Gideon he is his man.
- 14:33Speaker 3: and that God will deliver Israel through him. Gideon is
- 14:37Speaker 3: not convinced, and so he asks for a sign. He
- 14:41Speaker 3: prepared an offering for God, placing meat and bread in
- 14:43Speaker 3: a basket and drenching it in broth. When the angel
- 14:46Speaker 3: touched the offering with his staff, flames erupted and consumed
- 14:49Speaker 3: the offering. So Gideon's doubt is now burned away with
- 14:53Speaker 3: the flames, and now he has a genuine fear. The
- 14:59Speaker 3: fear of God is now burning in his heart. He
- 15:02Speaker 3: realizes that God is speaking to him, and he's terrified.
- 15:06Speaker 3: But God reassures him, tells him not to fear, and
- 15:09Speaker 3: then he commands him to tear down his father's idols.
- 15:13Speaker 3: God knew that if he was going to give Israel
- 15:15Speaker 3: victory and deliver them from their enemies, that he must
- 15:19Speaker 3: clean house. These false gods could no longer stand. Israel
- 15:23Speaker 3: could no longer be tempted to trust in idols. In
- 15:26Speaker 3: the same way, God wants to tear down the idols
- 15:29Speaker 3: of our own heart. the strongholds in our lives that
- 15:32Speaker 3: keep us from living in obedience to him. Our own
- 15:36Speaker 3: disobedience become idols of the heart. There can be no
- 15:40Speaker 3: half measures or half-hearted devotions. God wants all of you.
- 15:45Speaker 3: He wants you to be all in. Let there be
- 15:49Speaker 3: no other gods before our God. Gideon obeys and tears
- 15:54Speaker 3: the idols down. The people become angry with him when
- 15:57Speaker 3: they discover what he's done and want to kill him.
- 15:59Speaker 3: But Gideon's father challenges the people to let their gods
- 16:04Speaker 3: take care of Gideon if they were real. Now Gideon,
- 16:08Speaker 3: who's full of courage, sounds the call to war. And
- 16:12Speaker 3: when he sees that God has indeed called him and
- 16:14Speaker 3: prepared him, he is now surrounded by an army of 32,000.
- 16:20Speaker 3: But doubt creeps in once more and Gideon tests God
- 16:23Speaker 3: with a fleece. God patiently answers Gideon's call for reassurance
- 16:28Speaker 3: and twice proves himself to Gideon. The time for testing
- 16:33Speaker 3: is over. Now is the time for battle. And that's
- 16:37Speaker 3: what we're going to hear about the next time. It's
- 16:40Speaker 3: one of the greatest stories in the Bible. Dear Lord,
- 16:43Speaker 3: thank you for today's word and how it shows us
- 16:46Speaker 3: that you can use us even when we are small
- 16:49Speaker 3: and weak. that you do great things when we surrender
- 16:52Speaker 3: our lives to you. Thank you for this reminder that
- 16:55Speaker 3: you want nothing less than our full devotion to you.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Help us to tear down the other things, the idols
- 17:01Speaker 3: that keep our eyes off you, the gods of this
- 17:04Speaker 3: world that cannot help us at all. We pray in
- 17:08Speaker 3: the powerful and mighty name of Jesus, the God who
- 17:11Speaker 3: can do the impossible, in Jesus' name, amen. Thank you
- 17:17Speaker 3: for listening today to the Bible in a Year podcast.
