- 0:05It was John Flavel who said about Jesus.
- 0:09He is bread to the hungry water to the Thirsty.
- 0:15He is a garment to the naked healing to the wounded and
- 0:20whatever a soul can desire is found in him.
- 0:26Whatever a soul can desire is found in him.
- 0:30And my prayer is that, as we continue in this gospel, the
- 0:33gospel of Mark, that would become a greater reality to you.
- 0:38That would be a discovery that you would know week after week,
- 0:41whatever this Soul needs and Longs for is ultimately found in
- 0:46this person, Jesus Christ. And so let's do that together.
- 0:50Let's go to Mark chapter 5 and meet me there at verse 21.
- 0:59Mark 5:21. Thank you for that prayer,
- 1:07brother. I want to just pray again.
- 1:13And ask God for very similar things that you just asked for
- 1:16on behalf of this congregation. Lord, we do come again.
- 1:19Your word is before us, and it could be very true that some
- 1:23here, love your word with everything in their hearts and
- 1:25some who might be very indifferent to the word, but we
- 1:30just pray that in your good Mercy, you would overwhelm You
- 1:34would overwhelm all apathy, and distraction carelessness Lord
- 1:40that you would dominate every heart by your great love. help
- 1:46Lord, the delivery of this message and even in the way we
- 1:49receive it, Lord through all our weakness.
- 1:53We ask that you would make her power perfect.
- 1:56You promised that? That would be the case.
- 1:58So, we trust in you today in Jesus name, amen.
- 2:03For the remainder of this chapter and Mark, Mark chapter
- 2:065, you and I are given a lengthy account of to not one, but two
- 2:13incredible Miracles, that Jesus performed before.
- 2:17Making his way back to his hometown to minister there.
- 2:20As you will see together with me in Mark chapter 6.
- 2:24Now it would make sense for us to take these two amazing
- 2:29testimonies and deal with them separately, but that is not And
- 2:33how the Holy Spirit authored these two miracles to be
- 2:38explained and to be shared and to be told the Bible student
- 2:43will remember, if you remember, Mark chapter 5 that these two
- 2:47testimonies of two different, people who desperately needed a
- 2:51touch from Jesus are woven together.
- 2:56And so these events actually intersect in real-time, they're
- 3:01not blocked out in different occurrences.
- 3:04They are actually shared and that is a particular blessing on
- 3:09its own because you and I understand something about life,
- 3:13do we not? Yes.
- 3:15This this is going to be beautifully suspenseful, but it
- 3:17also speaks about a familiar picture of the interferences,
- 3:21the obstacles, the hindrances the surprises.
- 3:25And the turbulence is that you and I I know in real life.
- 3:28And so what will make this very special today?
- 3:32Is that there is a very realistic Rhythm to this
- 3:35testimony. And we can identify with that
- 3:40life is layered things happen at the same time.
- 3:45And things can sometimes be overwhelming or they can
- 3:49accelerate more than we planned or delay more than we would like
- 3:52to. And that is precisely one of the
- 3:54themes of what we're going to see here.
- 3:57This is a very identifiable, human experience with this
- 4:01story. Now, as we come to it, we can
- 4:03look at it from different Vantage points is, right?
- 4:05We can look at it from the, the view of our Lord Jesus, we can
- 4:09see it from the view of gyrus, we can even.
- 4:11Look at it through the woman who needed a touch from this great
- 4:14physician. But instead of just looking at
- 4:17one or through one lens, why don't just take advantage of all
- 4:20of them? And see what it is that God has
- 4:22to say, through these characters in this complex interaction
- 4:27between all of them. Because each of them have
- 4:29something of Great Value Great Value in our understanding of
- 4:34who Christ is, and how we can, and should relate to him and
- 4:38sorry with me. The first few verses beginning
- 4:40in verse 21, And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the
- 4:45other side, a great crowd gathered about him.
- 4:50And he was beside the sea then came out.
- 4:53One of the rulers of the synagogue gyrus by name and
- 4:57seeing him, he fell at his feet and implored him earnestly
- 5:01saying, my little daughter is at the point of death come and lay
- 5:06your hands on her so that she may be made.
- 5:10Well and live. And he went with him and a great
- 5:15crowd, followed him and thronged about him.
- 5:20The reason why Jesus has we see here in the first verse cross,
- 5:24to the other side of Galilee was because he was begged to leave.
- 5:29By the inhabitants of the country.
- 5:31In the King, James of the gadarenes or got in a Readiness.
- 5:35So many ways of saying these different words.
- 5:38And even after the Lord performed, such a spectacular
- 5:40Act of Mercy. For that, demoniac, that was
- 5:43terrorizing their region, the neighboring citizens. when I
- 5:47slow to conclude that they wanted nothing to do with Jesus,
- 5:52And so, they drove him out. They begged him to leave because
- 5:59at the loss of 2000 pigs. They calculated very early on
- 6:05that maintaining the presence of Christ in our midst might
- 6:08actually be very costly. And he might be the cause of
- 6:13much more loss, and we can't afford that, of course.
- 6:16And so, without hesitation, they told him to leave.
- 6:22And he did, he got in the same boat and he went on his way to
- 6:28what we just read now and considering that background in
- 6:31preparation for the Miracles at hand, I could not help but think
- 6:36that the people that told them to leave who thought that they
- 6:39would profit by rejecting Christ, would actually forfeit
- 6:43so much for their unbelief. Right.
- 6:46When we realize what Jesus is about to do in this area, in
- 6:51this region in this neighborhood.
- 6:54It makes you wonder what could have happened?
- 6:56What other blessings? Those people who vehement Lee
- 7:01told him to back away and turn around, will miss out on, will
- 7:06miss out on. We often talk about this, don't
- 7:08we? The cost of following Jesus, the
- 7:10cost of following there is a cost to follow Jesus.
- 7:14There's a greater cost of not following him.
- 7:17Greater costs, not just in the next life.
- 7:20In this life, in this life, I do not envy the man who walks about
- 7:24as a shell, no matter what he adorns himself with.
- 7:29He is the only one that can fill you and change you and renew you
- 7:32and give you that piece that you are searching for.
- 7:35And here's Jesus now, On a new scene surrounded by fresh group
- 7:39of people. They are eager hungry longing,
- 7:43they've heard the reports and now they want to experience it
- 7:46for themselves and all for a sudden this very familiar sight
- 7:50of Jesus being surrounded by men and women and children is
- 7:53suddenly interrupted by the presence of a man named gyrus.
- 7:57And the spotlight falls on him, not just in our text.
- 8:01But even then, because clearly for this crowd and the commotion
- 8:07to settle implies that this man is special, there's something
- 8:11about him. he has a certain reputation, Shirley He was known
- 8:18Shirley. And what it requires for us to
- 8:22do at this point is to pause and meditate on the descriptions
- 8:26that are connected to this gyrus, in order to appreciate in
- 8:30a greater way. What is about to take place?
- 8:33And so I want you to consider with me briefly as we come to
- 8:36the word of God. Again to look at three important
- 8:38aspects about gyrus this man that will help us understand the
- 8:42greatness of this story. The first thing we have to look
- 8:45at is gyrus has reputation. As I mentioned before, we even
- 8:49told his name. What you and I have been
- 8:51informed about was what he did. He was a ruler of the synagogue
- 8:57and if you've been with us long enough, you should hopefully
- 8:59know that. That is significant in itself.
- 9:02We've already been convinced that the religious leadership of
- 9:06Jesus day have had a consensus. That this man is to be
- 9:13condemned. It was public, it was open.
- 9:16And so vicious was their hostility towards Jesus.
- 9:22That while our precious master was traveling about and healing
- 9:26and teaching, they were in the dark plotting, his destruction.
- 9:30And whenever they had a chance to openly resist him, it was not
- 9:34a secret to understand that the religious Elite hated Jesus.
- 9:40And here, now we're told about a ruler of the synagogue.
- 9:45And though gyrus is not explicitly, a Pharisee, we're
- 9:48not told that there is no doubt that he is connected to the
- 9:53other leaders. And there is no doubt that he
- 9:56was fully aware of their antagonism of their hatred,
- 10:00maybe even of their plot. Gyrus was familiar with who this
- 10:05Jesus was and the nature of his work, made him accountable to
- 10:09those others who were enemies of Jesus.
- 10:12And you can just imagine them how this is so exceptional.
- 10:17Even so early on, in this story because it's obvious that gyrus
- 10:20was not influenced by that at all, at all.
- 10:25He could care less he comes here publicly and now only these he
- 10:31address Jesus. Not only does he put himself at
- 10:34risk With his peers and his companions.
- 10:39And his partners, he falls on his face and he begs Jesus.
- 10:46He begs Jesus. You're going to come before
- 10:50Public, Enemy Number One, and expose yourself with, so much to
- 10:56lose just for that very Act. Makes me think about Nicodemus
- 11:02in comparison who was a Pharisee who was in the same camp as
- 11:06gyrus though maybe in a higher position of course but what did
- 11:10he do when he wanted to meet with Jesus?
- 11:13He waited till there was no light.
- 11:15He waited till people went to bed and he made his way to this
- 11:18controversial Rabbi to have some kind of a conversation.
- 11:21This was not gyrus. Gyrus comes on the other hand,
- 11:26unaffected by the potential risk of what this very move would
- 11:30cause and his life. And it makes me wonder what
- 11:34happened to this man gyrus for him to be, so open with his
- 11:39association with Jesus. Which brings us to the second
- 11:42Point, not just gyrus his reputation, but gyrus is Crisis.
- 11:47We saw that we not in verse 23, he implored him earnestly saying
- 11:52my little daughter is at the point of death.
- 11:55Come lay your hands on her. That she might be wait made well
- 11:59and live. Okay, it makes sense.
- 12:02Now it makes sense. Your little baby is dying.
- 12:07You little girl. Her life is Vanishing right
- 12:10before your eyes. Pay attention to what I'm about
- 12:15to say and lean in as much as possible.
- 12:17Despite maybe the little chirping that you hear around
- 12:21Devastation is often the wrecking ball, that obliterates
- 12:25ones, hesitation or carelessness and coming to Christ.
- 12:31Devastation is often the wrecking ball, that brings Down
- 12:36the Walls of hesitation and carelessness of one coming to
- 12:40Christ. It is not a mystery, how God
- 12:43becomes very attractive when someone becomes severely
- 12:47afflicted. There is no mention of gyrus
- 12:51before this moment, there is no inclination that he ever
- 12:54interacted with Jesus inquired of Jesus.
- 12:58As if anything even more evidence that he stayed away
- 13:01from Jesus concerning his occupation.
- 13:04And yet here, we realize that there is a motivation alas.
- 13:08His his daughter now is on the brink of death and he hears of a
- 13:12man who's able to heal all kinds of illnesses.
- 13:16And now he has this strong strong motivation.
- 13:20A reason to come and so strong. Was it that he comes to the
- 13:24Lord? And every potential fear of
- 13:28losing fellowship with the elite or his well-respected job is
- 13:32gone. And we see even here in his
- 13:38plea, the tenderness the Brokenness, the desperation of
- 13:41this request. He didn't just say my daughter,
- 13:45my little daughter. My little daughter, she's young
- 13:50suffering at any point of life is traumatic, but there's
- 13:54something especially heart-wrenching when we see a
- 13:56little child fighting for their life.
- 13:59That is exactly what we see here.
- 14:00A man desperate for a baby who hasn't even seen the dawn of
- 14:04adulthood yet. And so he pleads my little girl,
- 14:08my little baby, My little daughter.
- 14:10Now, Luke emphasizes a different aspect of this account and verse
- 14:1742 of chapter 8, he informs us that she was his only daughter.
- 14:23Mark tells us through his own lips, gyrus, his own lips, my
- 14:27little daughter, when Luke narrates the story, he says she
- 14:31was his only daughter. All that adds another aspect to
- 14:35it. There's a not.
- 14:37This is all gyrus had. This is all gyrus had this
- 14:44precious little girl. No one else.
- 14:46Think about the dreams and the aspirations he had for her.
- 14:51Think about the prayers as a devout man, that he prayed to
- 14:53God on her behalf. Think about the memories that he
- 14:56had with her. No son.
- 14:58No other kids. Just this one little daughter.
- 15:02So near and dear to his heart. And now, within a few moments,
- 15:07all of that can disappear, all of that can just just be gone.
- 15:12And so he has no issue pushing through this crowd.
- 15:16He does not care of the presence of Pharisees are Sadducees are
- 15:19herodians, and he comes to this Jesus, and he falls on his
- 15:23knees. And he says, would you come
- 15:26please my, my little daughter? Needs divine intervention.
- 15:34Suffering can do that. Suffering has a way of bending,
- 15:39your will suffering, has a way of prioritizing your life and
- 15:45bringing you to the one who can only bring Solutions and
- 15:50salvations unlike any other. This man comes, and he needs The
- 15:55Miracle Worker to step in, which brings us to the third aspect of
- 15:58gyrus that we must consider. Not just his reputation, not
- 16:01just his crisis, but his faith, his faith.
- 16:06It's so obvious and clear, is a not and Matthews emphasis of the
- 16:10same story because we find it in Luke, we find it in Matthew
- 16:13Matthews, emphasis shows us just how great this faith is.
- 16:17And I would encourage you to turn that to see it with your
- 16:19own eyes and Matthew 9. We read here.
- 16:23In verse 18, Matthew 9 verse 18. It's a much more condensed
- 16:31version of the story. But it sheds a specific light
- 16:36that helps us know that the faith of this man while he was
- 16:42saying these things to them. Behold a ruler came in and now
- 16:46it's before him saying my daughter has just died. but come
- 16:52and lay your hand on her and she will live Don't think that
- 16:57there's a contradiction here. I'm sure it looks like it at
- 16:59face value is just that Matthew is interested here to focus on
- 17:06the fact that the daughter did in fact die, Mark tells us later
- 17:09on in his own story. So she did die, there's no
- 17:12contradiction. But instead of looking at the
- 17:14stretched out appeal and interaction, he just wants to
- 17:17get straight to the point. The hopelessness of the
- 17:21situation, the no turning back aspect of it.
- 17:24She died. My daughter has just died.
- 17:27And so, if you look at Matthews account, then you understand
- 17:31that gyrus did not just believe Jesus to heal his daughter, but
- 17:34to raise her from the dead. You can actually bring her back
- 17:38to life. And if you're there in Matthew,
- 17:41it's even a greater blessing. To see that as he makes this
- 17:47appeal, it is placed in the part of Matthew's text.
- 17:52That should compare to something else that happened.
- 17:55Something else that happened in Matthew chapter 8 with a very
- 17:58similar situation, another great demonstration of trust and who
- 18:02Jesus was and what he can do. Do you remember of that man?
- 18:05Who came to Jesus on behalf of his servant?
- 18:08And he asked the my servant is suffering terribly.
- 18:12And he asks, if the Lord could heal him and the Lord assured
- 18:14him, I will come with you and this Centurion stops him.
- 18:18Before he takes another step, and he says there in Matthew 8
- 18:22verse 7, Jesus said to him, I will come and heal him and verse
- 18:278 of Matthew 8, but the Centurion replied Lord, I am not
- 18:31worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word and
- 18:37my servant will be healed. This Centurion had such a
- 18:43revelation of the authority of Jesus Christ that he firmly
- 18:47believed that the Lord did not even need to come into close
- 18:49proximity. All he had to do was sent forth
- 18:52his word and the word would suffice.
- 18:56Gyrus had faith. Not that kind of faith.
- 19:01Not to this extent. And we don't want to condemn
- 19:05gyrus. but it's worth looking at the contrast to see what is this
- 19:10mean for us, gyrus Was a ruler in the synagogue, he was
- 19:14constantly in the presence of God's people like you are here
- 19:17week after week under and supervising and organizing the
- 19:21readings of the Scrolls and God's word.
- 19:24Being proclaimed declared study, rehearse, memorize song.
- 19:31He had some kind of understanding, I'm sure.
- 19:35Of God in his own life. And yet, with all of that
- 19:39exposure, with all of that experience, he lacked the
- 19:42quality of faith of someone who was a complete Foreigner to
- 19:45these things. This, the Centurion is a Roman.
- 19:48He's a gentile, he is totally disconnected from gyrus his
- 19:53background and yet, he exercised greater faith in the person of
- 19:58Jesus Christ. Why am I bringing this up to you
- 20:02to encourage you to encourage you in this way that you and I
- 20:06don't need a superb. Herb education or occupation or
- 20:12reputation or position? Does it matter?
- 20:16To touch the Heart of Jesus Christ.
- 20:20See what often impresses. Men doesn't move God.
- 20:24And sometimes we feel like we can't come to the place of
- 20:28moving the heart of our God, because we lack what men says,
- 20:31you need to be a true. Spiritual intimate servant of
- 20:36Jesus Christ. This Centurion had nothing of
- 20:39the sort, no Letters by his name, no backing nothing other
- 20:45than the faith to believe that this Jesus, that he's heard
- 20:49about, can do all things. And that move the heart of
- 20:52Christ. Do not remember where he prays.
- 20:54is Faith and he says, there isn't anything like this that
- 20:56I've seen in Israel So, stop striving for the things of the
- 21:02flesh. Stop thinking that you will be
- 21:05at a distance with this crisis in comparison to so and so
- 21:09because of superficial things know, the Lord is willing to
- 21:12open his arms up to those who have simple Faith.
- 21:15Simple trust though, they lack maybe so much else but what a
- 21:20gracious God we serve what a gracious God.
- 21:23Even though Jerry's, his faith was not a strong as the
- 21:26centurions. He was willing to say, let's go.
- 21:29I'm coming with you. He went with him.
- 21:31That's what we read. That, once the request was made
- 21:34Christ, went with him as did the crowd.
- 21:37And I look at that. I think Lord thank you.
- 21:41Whether my faith is weak or it is strong.
- 21:43You are willing to work with me. You're willing to walk with me
- 21:46along the way. You are such a patient teacher,
- 21:50such a loving Shepherd. And the natural sequence of
- 21:53these events, supposes that we are now going to be transported.
- 21:57In the next verse into gyrus is home and Jesus going to do this,
- 22:01right? Not so, because everything now
- 22:05will be suddenly interrupted by someone else and we read back in
- 22:10Mark chapter 5 verse 25. And there was a woman.
- 22:21Who had a discharge of blood for 12 years and who had suffered
- 22:26much under many Physicians and had spent all that she had and
- 22:30was no better but rather grew worse.
- 22:33She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in
- 22:36the crowd and touched His Garment.
- 22:39For she said, if I touch even his garments, I will be made.
- 22:46Well, this woman unnamed we're told suffered she suffered for
- 22:5512 years. Twelve years.
- 23:00Jesus is on his way. To heal a little girl.
- 23:05And in verse 42 of our chapter, we are told that she was 12
- 23:08years old. Jesus was on his way to hear 12
- 23:12year old girl. and his plan was briefly, interrupted by a woman,
- 23:18who is suffering for 12 years, interesting similarity, And when
- 23:24you connect those things together, you realize that these
- 23:27two stories have something to make of a powerful Point, think
- 23:31about it. The number 12 here of both of
- 23:35these individuals are not going to do strange interpretations
- 23:38with numbers. It's their history.
- 23:41Their biography. It's their situation.
- 23:45Whether you're young or old, Whether you've been suffering
- 23:50for a short time for a long time.
- 23:53Whether you are a seasoned sinner.
- 23:56Or a fresh mind being awakened to a new world of Temptation.
- 24:02Christ, is your only hope. Christ is your savior still.
- 24:07He is a refuge to children and he is a shield to the weathered
- 24:11soul. For 12 years, we don't know how
- 24:16long or when this little girl suffered, but we know that
- 24:18during those 12 years of her life, there was a woman who is
- 24:21being beat up by a disease. And here's a little girl, 12
- 24:26years old quickly deteriorating and this woman who is only
- 24:29growing worse and worse and worse.
- 24:32And here's the point. Christ can come to you at the
- 24:35budding of life. Or he can rescue after you have
- 24:40over the years experimented with one failed solution.
- 24:44After the other, he is the same savior.
- 24:49He is an available savior. And the biography of all kinds
- 24:57of suffering and sin are not limited to his power.
- 25:03What was it that she suffered with?
- 25:06What was it? That was eating her up.
- 25:07What was it that drained her in so many ways?
- 25:09We were told it was a discharge of blood, some kind of
- 25:12hemorrhaging that was deemed incurable.
- 25:16And 12 years of going from one physician to the next one, dr1
- 25:20opinion after the other, and they was all zeros.
- 25:24Nothing. No hint of Hope, no clarity.
- 25:30You can imagine how emotionally exhausting this is.
- 25:33You can imagine that she was obviously uncomfortable with
- 25:36this. Because when she and ends up
- 25:39getting her healing from the Lord, she can feel that she was
- 25:42healed. She could feel it.
- 25:44It was measurable by her feeling, so she is afflicted.
- 25:49And, and just you can imagine how drain she was again, where
- 25:54do I go now and more than our emotions.
- 25:57Her bank account was brought to nothing as well.
- 26:00All the money that she invested all her savings, all her future
- 26:06to make matters worse. According to the law, there was
- 26:08so much more that was taken from her because of her condition.
- 26:13Leviticus 15:25 were given instructions in the old Covenant
- 26:17of what someone was to do if they had any kind of discharge
- 26:21of blood. And let me read this verse to
- 26:23you to give you an idea of the way she had to live for 12
- 26:27years. We're told in Leviticus 1525 and
- 26:31if a woman has a discharge of blood for many days not at the
- 26:35time of her menstrual impurity. So apart from her menstrual
- 26:38impurity or she has a discharge beyond the time of her impurity
- 26:43all the days of her discharge she shall continue and
- 26:46uncleanness As in the days of her impurity, she shall be
- 26:50unclean. Okay.
- 26:53So you have suffering for over a decade discomfort Psychological
- 27:00pain, emotional distress, and more than that.
- 27:04Because of her state of uncleanness she can't go worship
- 27:07God in the temple. She can't go to the synagogue
- 27:11and sit and be with other believers.
- 27:16And be encouraged. More than that.
- 27:22If she was married, that would make things difficult with her
- 27:24own husband, why? Because even the very bed, she
- 27:27would lay on was unclean and the seat that she would sit on would
- 27:30be in pure. And so now, her day-to-day
- 27:33interactions Her conversations her activities are severely
- 27:38hindered because of this law. And so she's almost like a leper
- 27:44ostracize and pushed away, people wanting to avoid her,
- 27:47because if they come into contact with her, they are
- 27:49impure and they have to go through that ritual and they're
- 27:52not willing to have such kind of obstacles.
- 27:54They already have enough issues of their own.
- 27:57This is the kind of woman that we're dealing with.
- 28:03And though the number 12 might be similar her background.
- 28:06Could have been any more different than gyrus is gyrus,
- 28:09could go to the synagogue, he could go to the temple, he could
- 28:12be with the people of God, he could sit under the word of God.
- 28:15Here's this woman just stuck in some dark corner day after day
- 28:18night after night. Trying to gather together coins
- 28:23to figure out, if she can make another appointment, maybe with
- 28:25another doctor, who can give her some kind of some kind of light
- 28:29for a future. Which tells me something else
- 28:33about Jesus, though. She and gyrus is situation and
- 28:37background and history, and day-to-day living was so far.
- 28:40Apart from being similar Christ, can restore variety of
- 28:44Brokenness A variety of Brokenness is not only an expert
- 28:49with one or two sins. He doesn't just save those who
- 28:55grew up in the church but went away but he has a little bit
- 28:58more difficulty, saving those who did not grow up in the
- 29:01church. Know he's able to sympathize and
- 29:04he's able to save with again a great roster of degeneracy in
- 29:09despair. You know what?
- 29:14Second Corinthians 5:17 says, you know, very well.
- 29:16Therefore if and I love this part, therefore if anyone is in
- 29:20Christ, He is a new creation. New Creation.
- 29:25I understand, I love. Praise God, for the power of the
- 29:27Gospel, but you know what? Blesses me, the King James says,
- 29:30if any man, if any any man? If anyone, any man at any time,
- 29:36anywhere? Any, who any, when If any man be
- 29:42in Christ, Christ can transform him.
- 29:47And here's a woman who is far apart from gyrus in so many
- 29:50ways, but she fits in the category of anyone, anyone.
- 29:56You know, this is an important point because you have some
- 29:59people who are so dysfunctional, so broken, so battered, so beat
- 30:03up so scarred that they can sit in a place like this here
- 30:07message like this. And be like, that's nice for the
- 30:09guy in the suit. Or the kid that grew up with a
- 30:12mom and dad that brought him to Awana.
- 30:16I don't think this works for me and I'm here to tell you, it
- 30:18works for you. I'm here to tell you that he can
- 30:22deliver you. and what I'm asking you to do with the authority of
- 30:27Jesus Christ and his word Is what this woman did believe
- 30:34believe she heard the reports of what Christ has done and this is
- 30:39what she came to the conclusion. If he can do it for them
- 30:45including gyrus, he can do it for me, he can do it for me.
- 30:50I want to make sure that he does it for me.
- 30:53I'm not leaving here empty-handed, I'm not leaving
- 30:55here the same way that I came in, that kind of desperation is
- 30:59lacking in our appeal when it comes to the gospel.
- 31:03I can't put a desire in you, I can only present the object of
- 31:06what your desires should be and it's up to you how you flee to
- 31:10him. This woman.
- 31:16Cease this Jesus. And there's somebody else.
- 31:21Now, in the crowd who is about to make her way towards the Lord
- 31:23like gyrus did. And what we are about to read is
- 31:26that Christ is going to do in One Moment.
- 31:28One Moment, what Physicians going to do over 12 years in one
- 31:33second and one grasp of His Garment, that healing virtue
- 31:38will come and dry up and heal and restore what?
- 31:43So many remedies so many reports, so many investigations,
- 31:47so many studies could not even come close to and though that is
- 31:51true for sickness because we believe Jesus can heal
- 31:54everything, he still a Healer It is especially true when it comes
- 32:00to your soul, my friend, the sickness of the Soul because of
- 32:03sin. One moment, it can all change
- 32:08and in the words of j.c., Ryle concerning the story.
- 32:11He says, what we see here is an emblem of the relief that the
- 32:15gospel confers on the soul. In other words, in the same way
- 32:21that there was immediate restoration and healing and
- 32:24wholeness in that touch for her body, so much more for your
- 32:28spirit so much more for that part that is going to be
- 32:34immortal so much more for that thing.
- 32:37That affects everything else, that is more important than
- 32:40anybody being healed. Temporarily.
- 32:44And that's the point. Christ, unlike these Physicians,
- 32:47can do what nobody else can do because he created you and he
- 32:52died for you. And here's the warning, with all
- 32:57of that encouragement that's being showered on us this
- 32:59afternoon. Here's the warning in the same
- 33:00way that this woman was running from one solution to the next
- 33:04one. Possible remedy to the next, but
- 33:08could not find it. And we're told was only getting
- 33:10worse, so will it be with you, the longer you delay coming to
- 33:14Jesus Christ? Why are you even waiting
- 33:18anymore? What are you waiting for, huh?
- 33:23What do you like, what is it that you're looking forward to
- 33:25so much that you think Jesus is going to interrupt, you have
- 33:27some pigs that you're worried to lose.
- 33:31What is it? When will you stop chasing vein
- 33:35Idols? Vein philosophies.
- 33:38Vain pleasures. Silly solutions, that attempt to
- 33:43bring you into a place of wholeness and completion and
- 33:48sense of purpose and love. When will you just give up save
- 33:53your time, save your resources, save your energy and fall at the
- 33:57foot of the cross. And in one moment what you've
- 34:03been chasing around, like a chicken with its head cut off,
- 34:07what you've been spending what you've been trying to escape
- 34:10from what you've been trying to run to a runaway, whatever the
- 34:13case may be right here. Is your answer.
- 34:19So stop sticking your head in empty cisterns and trying to
- 34:22draw some kind of value from it. When the Fountain of Life is
- 34:25gushing forth, exactly what you need and it's right there before
- 34:29you That's what this woman shows us to some extent, I'm sure.
- 34:36And look what she says in verse 28.
- 34:39For she said, if I, if I touch even his garments, I'll be made.
- 34:43Well, now, this is quick thinking, this is a strategy on
- 34:47the spot. Remember, Jesus is making his
- 34:50way to gyrus is home, and there is a crowd that's pressing
- 34:54against him. And this woman is there, I don't
- 34:56know if she's in the third row, the fifth rotten.
- 34:58Oh, she's pushed all the way in the back, but she singled out
- 35:01where Jesus was, and this is what she came to in her and her
- 35:04thinking. If I just just going to grab
- 35:06him. But you got a link that with
- 35:09what we, what we learn here in verse 27.
- 35:13She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him.
- 35:19So I don't think I'm going to touch him, but I'm going to have
- 35:20to come behind him. Why not before him?
- 35:24Why not face them? Like gyrus did well?
- 35:26Because of what she has. It's too risky.
- 35:30She can't touch anyone. She can't be in close proximity
- 35:34to anyone. And she stands before Jesus and
- 35:38explains her situation then that might just turn him off and push
- 35:42him away and they just move on. And so I'm just going to make
- 35:45this a drive-thru experience. I'm just going to go by grab him
- 35:51and then just whisk away into the crowd and he won't even know
- 35:53about it, how cute he won't know about it.
- 35:58This is her plan and guess what? It worked.
- 36:03It worked verse 29 and immediately the flow of blood
- 36:06dried up and she felt in her body that she was healed of her
- 36:10disease. This is a unique story for many
- 36:16reasons, and one of those reasons is how Jesus responds
- 36:22and his reaction here. Stands out from many other
- 36:27miracles. because we read here in verse 30 and Jesus,
- 36:32perceiving and himself, That power had gone out from him.
- 36:40That's an interesting commentary.
- 36:44Don't confuse those words with the notion that Jesus can be
- 36:50depleted of Supernatural ability, like a battery with
- 36:53lose power. The more you use it, None of us
- 36:57in here, I'm sure. Whatever.
- 36:58Think that though, we exert the power of the Sun, that that
- 37:01great ball of light and heat is ever exhausted of its strength.
- 37:09Christ. Here is infinite in his power
- 37:11and his might and His glory and his strength.
- 37:15Yes he is human and there are other limitations there but when
- 37:18it comes to the virtue that heals he is Limitless.
- 37:24What we're being told here, is that Jesus was now made aware.
- 37:30Not that he was unaware of what was going to happen, but he's
- 37:33going to express that he was now aware of what this lady did.
- 37:37And he's not going to let her get away with it.
- 37:42And so, he knew power had gone out from him and he does
- 37:47something right after immediately turned about in the
- 37:51crowd and said, who touched my garments?
- 37:57Did Jesus not know? Oh he knew then why ask the
- 38:01question? It's not issued from ignorance.
- 38:05Jesus is asking a question. Because he's implementing
- 38:10something that we've seen God do from beginning to end in this
- 38:12book. Are you not familiar with God's
- 38:15implementation of rhetorical questions?
- 38:19Even from the beginning asking Adam where he was, God knew
- 38:22exactly where Adam was. And Jesus, who is God knows
- 38:27exactly who touched his garments because the question is not to
- 38:33receive Clarity, it's to encourage confession.
- 38:38Who touched my garments? Who touched my garlands?
- 38:45And now we see. That this woman.
- 38:50Has been identified to Jesus, at least, and he's not doing this
- 38:54to embarrass her. He's not doing this to try to
- 38:57shame her or scorn, her Nothing of the sort.
- 39:02It's actually a very, very beautiful picture of the heart
- 39:05of Christ for us. Think about it.
- 39:09Jesus is not interested, this is so profound to me.
- 39:13He's not interested in dispensing, his power to
- 39:17individuals without them coming to him personally, the very
- 39:22design of his power that it would draw you to himself.
- 39:28You know I've met some people throughout my walk with the Lord
- 39:32that have no problem coming to Jesus with a problem or to
- 39:38hoping that he will fix it and only making their way back to
- 39:44their lives. And going about as though
- 39:46nothing had happened and like this woman they just want to
- 39:50touch Jesus from behind. They don't want to see him
- 39:54face-to-face. They don't want that Fellowship.
- 39:56They don't want that intimacy. They don't want that
- 39:58relationship. They just want something from
- 40:01him. Let me touch him.
- 40:02Let me grab it. My kid is in trouble.
- 40:04My finances are in trouble. My body is in trouble.
- 40:06I heard about this Jesus. Let me just take what he has to
- 40:10offer and move about my life. That's not what God wants
- 40:13though. I've seen it with my own eyes.
- 40:18You're saying, how does this miracle really?
- 40:20I've seen it with my own eyes Let me just touch His Garment
- 40:25and go about my way but Christ wants your heart.
- 40:30You want something from Christ. You know what Christ wants you
- 40:35You do you want Christ? That's the whole difference.
- 40:39I'm telling you, what Christ wants?
- 40:41He wants you. You want something from him, or
- 40:43do you want him? That's the gospel coming to God,
- 40:50not escaping this, or inheriting that God.
- 40:56Jesus pauses on his quest to Jerry's his home.
- 41:01Who touched my garments? The disciples didn't understand.
- 41:06There's a lot of things that the disciples didn't understand, but
- 41:08let me read if you don't believe that.
- 41:11This is what Jesus about, let me read to you, what he prayed for
- 41:13you. Let me read what he prayed for
- 41:16you and John 17:20 for you. Don't even have to turn there
- 41:20unless you want to highlight it. But I want you to give every
- 41:23faculty of your being over to what I'm about to say, and
- 41:27really chew on it and understand what Jesus is asking the father
- 41:32for in John 17, 24. Father, I desire that they also
- 41:39whom you have, given me may be with me where I am.
- 41:50To see my glory that you have given me because you loved me
- 41:55before the foundation of the world.
- 41:58Father, I'm asking that those that you have given me.
- 42:02Oh, I want them to be with me. Where I am. where I am but then
- 42:12he speaks about that, they may see my glory, so he's obviously
- 42:15referring to the Future where he will be There's something of the
- 42:20present to, right. And that's a mysterious thing
- 42:24that we don't have time to unpack.
- 42:27Where I am. I want them to see my glory.
- 42:30I wanted to be near me. Father, that's my request.
- 42:33That's how I'm ending. This High Priestly prayer.
- 42:39And there is not one request of the father of a deny, the son.
- 42:42You know what that means. It means that if you have been
- 42:45given, if you are his then you will be with him to see his
- 42:50glory forever and ever. I can't wait for that day.
- 42:59He wants us. He prayed to the father and the
- 43:03Holy Spirit recorded it. So that when you ever doubt, the
- 43:07reality of his love, you would realize the sun.
- 43:11Pray to the father for me to be with him.
- 43:13And the father will never deny the son.
- 43:15Therefore, I will not be denied and I will be his forever and
- 43:19ever and ever and ever, who touched my garments?
- 43:29And the intensity of his desire for her to approach and to
- 43:33confess what had taken place is seen back at verse 32 of Mark
- 43:38chapter 5. And he looked around to see who
- 43:43had done it. Remember gyrus his daughter
- 43:49needs a touch. And yet this woman though,
- 43:53everyone is pressing against the Lord, trying to get a piece of
- 43:57him, here's a woman who grabs ahold of them walks away.
- 44:00Jesus stops in his tracks. Ask the question and more than
- 44:04that. He does not move forward.
- 44:06He looks intensely for her. So here's this woman, you can
- 44:14imagine her heart sinking to her gut her face being flushed.
- 44:21Remember, she can't touch anyone.
- 44:25And not only this. Now Jesus is making a public
- 44:28scene here. So yeah, she didn't just touch
- 44:32Jesus, teach she touched a lot of people.
- 44:36And if they find out what happened, there going to be a
- 44:39lot of upset people with this woman.
- 44:42So he looks for so, you know what, that tells me, everything
- 44:46is at a standstill. Everything is at a standstill.
- 44:49Now, people are looking at Jesus.
- 44:51Who's the center of attention? He's leading the pack.
- 44:53And now they are looking where he's looking, because clearly
- 44:56something must have been so important enough for him to stop
- 44:59and say something that happened. Well what happened?
- 45:01Let's see. But Christ pause, here's more
- 45:07than that, you know what it is. It's Jesus here.
- 45:10Also preparing the masses. To hear the testimony of this
- 45:16woman who would share what the Lord had done for her.
- 45:22You see what the Lord is asking here.
- 45:25When he says, who touched my garments and when he looks for
- 45:27her is more than just her coming to him and him reassuring her of
- 45:33something about who she is. That is completely relational
- 45:38know. The Lord also wants her in an
- 45:40indirect way to publicly confess the mercy and she experienced
- 45:48Jesus. He's not interested.
- 45:53And secret disciples. Lord is worthy of honor and
- 46:00Glory. and when he does something in your life, He is
- 46:06worth you being unashamed to tell about it.
- 46:14Who touched my garments? This type of said, Lord,
- 46:18everyone is here. Touching you.
- 46:20What do you mean? Who touched?
- 46:21You know someone touched me. Isn't it amazing that we can be
- 46:24in a group like this? But there's something about
- 46:27faith that touches the heart of God.
- 46:33The presence of people around the name of Christ, the word of
- 46:35Christ songs about Christ does not automatically mean that his
- 46:38heart is touched in the same way.
- 46:40As the one who has a heart that realizes I need him.
- 46:46I Look to You, Lord. I come to you.
- 46:48Someone touched me. We everybody's touching know
- 46:52someone touched me. He looks.
- 46:59Do you see it? Christ is not interested in our
- 47:01testimonies to remain private must be willing to confess what
- 47:06he has done. Salvation, may occur in secret,
- 47:09but the story about it, shouldn't What is this woman
- 47:16going to do? She comes trembling, she comes
- 47:21afraid. Some would say because she's
- 47:27worried about sharing what had happened to her and what she had
- 47:29as a condition or maybe it was because she realized that this
- 47:33is not just a prophet. This is not just some special
- 47:38messenger of God that comes after a few Generations.
- 47:41How did he know I touched him? It shows, she comes. so fearful
- 47:53And Jesus assures us that she's been made well.
- 47:57But you know, I couldn't help but think with all of this that
- 48:00has happened as wonderful as it was for this woman.
- 48:03You remember who we started with right gyrus Gyrus, this was
- 48:10about gyrus. This is what gyrus is little
- 48:12daughter and she's dying and every minute counts so now let's
- 48:19put our ourselves in the sandals of gyrus.
- 48:26Lord, my little daughter is dying.
- 48:27I need you to come. I need you to heal her.
- 48:30I know you can do it. Please, I will come.
- 48:32Yes. And the Lord makes way in the
- 48:35crowd comes. And I wonder if Joe was a little
- 48:37nervous because when you have a crowd like that there's traffic
- 48:39and things get slower traffic on top of that.
- 48:44Now, this woman comes and obviously does something and
- 48:49Jesus stops. We're going to look at gyrus
- 48:54more next week. Time doesn't serve as well in
- 48:57terms of exploring everything here, but if I was gyrus Who
- 49:06touched my garments? My daughter is dying.
- 49:14More than that and he's looking everybody stop.
- 49:24You see what Jesus said to this woman?
- 49:28I wonder if it did something to gyrus.
- 49:32Verse 34. and he said to her daughter, Your faith has made
- 49:38you. Well, go in peace and be healed
- 49:41of your disease. Gyrus is experiencing some delay
- 49:49Jesus. Do you not see the urgency of
- 49:51the matter? How is it that you're stopping?
- 49:54This is not the time to stop. It's time to go.
- 49:56We got to go in another gear. Let's go Lord.
- 49:59And how true is it? That the Masters Pace in?
- 50:02The dealings of our lives are often not in complete agreement
- 50:06with our wishes. But I wonder if verse 34 did
- 50:12something to gyrus, he said to her daughter.
- 50:18Oh, now we have two daughters in the story.
- 50:23It all started with my little daughter and this scene is
- 50:27ending with Jesus addressing this mature woman, stranger
- 50:31unnamed. And with such sympathy and with
- 50:36a delicate voice, I'm sure he says daughter.
- 50:40Not daughter of Abraham, not daughter of Jerusalem.
- 50:46You'd be hard-pressed to find Jesus addressing anybody
- 50:48directly as daughter in the Gospels.
- 50:55Daughter. your faith has made you, well, And I wonder if that
- 51:02statement translated to the crowd and maybe even gyrus, it's
- 51:07obvious that this Jesus loves this woman as a father, does his
- 51:12daughter? He does.
- 51:18In fact, the gospel adopts us. Causes sons and daughters.
- 51:24And here's gyrus was he nervous? I don't know.
- 51:26Was he anxious? I don't know.
- 51:28Was he critical like the disciples were for a moment in
- 51:31verse 31 doesn't say anything. But what kind of hush did it
- 51:36bring to his soul? I wonder when he heard Jesus as
- 51:42a man who wanted his little daughter to be healed addressing
- 51:45this woman who has been healed daughter.
- 51:50The great love of Jesus compassion of Jesus.
- 51:53I have a real daughter by Blood, who needs to be touched?
- 51:56Who is this woman any relation? No relatives, no upbringing, No
- 52:03Stranger, but my love for her, my affection for her, my
- 52:07compassion for her, my desire for her daughter. your faith has
- 52:13made you, well, You see what Jesus wants from you.
- 52:19He doesn't just want to heal you.
- 52:21He doesn't want to just get you out of debt.
- 52:24Didn't want to just make you sleep better at night.
- 52:27Daughter. See if she would have just went
- 52:29on, she would have got healing. But after she came before Christ
- 52:32and says what we're told here, that she came before, Jesus and
- 52:36verse 33 and told him the whole truth.
- 52:39When you come and complete honesty and transparency, and
- 52:43humility with your sin with your condition.
- 52:47With what you've done with what you have and done here is the
- 52:50assurance that Christ brings to you the same for this woman
- 52:52daughter. Now, we have relationship now, I
- 52:54see you in a. So now I am affirming to you
