Speaker 3: Let's welcome to the show now, Attorney General J. B. McCuskey,
• 2:14
Speaker 3: Good morning, sir, Welcome to the show.
• 2:16
Speaker 5: Good morning, Dave. How's it going.
• 2:18
Speaker 3: I am doing fine. It's just not the same man,
• 2:21
Speaker 3: when you're not in studio with me.
• 2:22
Speaker 5: You know, I know it is so much more fun
• 2:25
Speaker 5: to make fun of you live.
• 2:26
Speaker 3: That's what I'm thinking. And I enjoy the banter that
• 2:29
Speaker 3: we have. You always have complimentary words for me, but
• 2:33
Speaker 3: it's just not the same when you're out on the road, man,
• 2:36
Speaker 3: Not the same. All right.
• 2:37
Speaker 5: Love to say you're doing well, buddy. I'm doing Thanksgiving?
• 2:39
  Speaker 3: I did, I did. I had a great Thanksgiving. That's
• 2:42
Speaker 3: back when the Cowboys were still winning games, you know,
• 2:45
Speaker 3: when we beat the Chiefs and but then lost to Minnesota.
• 2:47
Speaker 5: And that was back when the Steelers still stunk.
• 2:49
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 2:50
Speaker 3: Then the Steelers turned it up and they continue their
• 2:52
Speaker 3: dominance on Monday Night football. So congratulations to your team, Jamie.
• 2:56
Speaker 3: We spent a lot of time on the show talking
• 2:58
Speaker 3: about opioids and about story, but I thought I might
• 3:01
Speaker 3: let you comment a little bit more this morning, your
• 3:03
Speaker 3: office has filed a lawsuit against a PBM, that's pharmacy
• 3:06
Speaker 3: benefit manager, this time Optum, which is the PBM of
• 3:09
Speaker 3: United Healthcare and its associated companies, which you say have
• 3:13
Speaker 3: contributed to the supply of opioids in West Virginia.
• 3:16
Speaker 5: Talk about that, Yeah, I think so from a high
• 3:20
Speaker 5: level standpoint, what happened was from the pharmacy benefit manager's
• 3:24
Speaker 5: standpoint is that when healthcare, particularly after Obamacare, became so
• 3:29
Speaker 5: unbelievably complicated that you know, not even lawyers can really
• 3:34
Speaker 5: understand what your medical bills mean or look like, the
• 3:38
Speaker 5: pharmacy benefit managers managed to place themselves into the market
• 3:42
Speaker 5: in a way where they became the ultimate middleman because
• 3:45
Speaker 5: they were the only ones that could understand the paperwork
• 3:48
Speaker 5: that went in. And so then what happened was is
• 3:50
Speaker 5: they created a series of ways in which they could
• 3:52
Speaker 5: make a ton more money. And one of those ways
• 3:56
Speaker 5: was when they entered the market. The the opioid crisis
• 3:59
Speaker 5: was really just arding to fuel and everyone kind of
• 4:01
Speaker 5: knew what was happening when they entered the marketplace, and
• 4:04
Speaker 5: the and the analogy that I like to use is
• 4:06
Speaker 5: that they were handed a blanket and a and a
• 4:09
Speaker 5: and a can of gasoline. And in one hand, they
• 4:12
Speaker 5: could have taken the blanket and thrown it on this
• 4:14
Speaker 5: fire and put it out, But instead they chose to
• 4:17
Speaker 5: use the can of gasoline to explode this problem so
• 4:20
Speaker 5: that they could make way more money. And so in
• 4:22
Speaker 5: some ways, I think the behavior of the PBMs, and
• 4:25
Speaker 5: particularly in this instance of Optum, was amongst the most insidious,
• 4:32
Speaker 5: because they were they entered the marketplace after the crisis
• 4:35
Speaker 5: had begun and and really exacerbated it. And we are
• 4:39
Speaker 5: going to hold them accountable for their actions here in
• 4:43
Speaker 5: West Virginia in making opioids easier and easier to get,
• 4:47
Speaker 5: less expensive to buy, and for rewarding their subservient companies
• 4:52
Speaker 5: for prescribing more opioids.
• 4:54
Speaker 3: Talking again with Attorney General JB. Mccusky, it was announced
• 4:58
Speaker 3: earlier this month that a seven hundred million dollars settlement
• 5:02
Speaker 3: had been reached against Google. There a total of fifty
• 5:05
Speaker 3: two other attorneys general were a part of this. What's
• 5:08
  Speaker 3: this all about?
• 5:10
Speaker 5: That's almost all the attorney generals now, it is?
• 5:13
  Speaker 3: It is?
• 5:14
Speaker 5: Yeah, So so you know, there's there's a myriad of
• 5:17
Speaker 5: these sort of multi state cases and it is very,
• 5:21
Speaker 5: very infrequent that every single state is on it, and
• 5:24
Speaker 5: in this instance there's there's fifty two of them. This
• 5:26
Speaker 5: is a case that involves Google's usage of people's data,
• 5:30
Speaker 5: et cetera. And there's a pool of money that will
• 5:33
Speaker 5: be available to consumers. And if you go onto our
• 5:36
Speaker 5: website WVAGO dot gov, you can find all of the
• 5:41
Speaker 5: information you need if you think you are one of
• 5:44
Speaker 5: those folks that is affected by by this settlement. It's
• 5:48
Speaker 5: easy to find and the forms are easy to fill out.
• 5:51
Speaker 3: So what's the what was the major issue with Google here?
• 5:53
Speaker 3: I mean everybody uses it, So what was the major
• 5:57
  Speaker 3: issue here?
• 5:58
Speaker 5: Oh, there's a lot lot of issues when you're dealing
• 6:02
Speaker 5: in this big tech world, right, they are wheeling and
• 6:05
Speaker 5: dealing and changing their technology, et cetera all the time,
• 6:09
Speaker 5: and frequently they get a little bit out ahead of
• 6:11
Speaker 5: their skis and they start using people's information and data,
• 6:14
Speaker 5: et cetera in ways that were not specifically allowed by
• 6:20
Speaker 5: the consumer. Meaning you didn't check a box it says
• 6:23
Speaker 5: you have authority to take my data in my and
• 6:26
Speaker 5: my stuff and sell it to another company to use
• 6:29
Speaker 5: for a different purpose.
• 6:30
Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think that's you know, there are these
• 6:34
Speaker 3: websites that you see in advertising on television a lot
• 6:36
Speaker 3: talking about totally totally secure search engines and so on
• 6:42
Speaker 3: and so forth. I mean, if you believe that Go,
• 6:44
Speaker 3: I think is one of them. Okay, well, if you
• 6:46
Speaker 3: believe that anything that you search for online, if you
• 6:49
Speaker 3: believe you're being protected by any of these companies. I
• 6:52
Speaker 3: got some beachfront property in eleanor West Virginia I want
• 6:54
  Speaker 3: to sell you.
• 6:55
Speaker 5: Yeah. Correct, And we live in this world a big
• 6:59
Speaker 5: tech And I'm sorry if I don't use all of
• 7:01
Speaker 5: the exact right words. I'm kind of a technophyte. I
• 7:05
Speaker 5: just missed it right. I'm an elder millennial. Of the
• 7:08
Speaker 5: technologies that we're talking about here came to me when
• 7:11
Speaker 5: I was in college instead of high school. But you know,
• 7:14
Speaker 5: the long and the short of it is is that
• 7:15
Speaker 5: data privacy is an immensely important topic. Right now. We
• 7:19
Speaker 5: have a couple of more really big cases coming against companies,
• 7:23
Speaker 5: some of them with very significant ties to the Chinese government,
• 7:28
Speaker 5: are weaseling their way into the lives of Americans and
• 7:31
Speaker 5: enabling and that the word spy comes to mind. But
• 7:36
Speaker 5: you know the way that these technologies work is they
• 7:39
Speaker 5: get into your computer and they enable people in very
• 7:42
Speaker 5: remote places, including the Chinese Communist Party, to see and
• 7:46
Speaker 5: know what you're doing online. And this is a huge problem,
• 7:49
Speaker 5: and it's something that myself and a very large majority
• 7:53
Speaker 5: of our of my attorney general colleagues across the country,
• 7:56
Speaker 5: in a bipartisan way, are fighting very hard against.
• 8:00
Speaker 3: What do switch gears romon. You're calling for increased security
• 8:04
Speaker 3: for funding for federal judges.
• 8:06
Speaker 5: Why, yeah, Yes, a really really dangerous world out there,
• 8:12
Speaker 5: especially if you're somebody who is making very important decisions
• 8:17
Speaker 5: that matter to a lot of people. And we saw,
• 8:20
Speaker 5: I believe it was two years ago, an absolutely horrific
• 8:23
Speaker 5: murder happened at a federal judge's house, And you know,
• 8:27
Speaker 5: the world is just increasingly more dangerous, and judges are
• 8:32
Speaker 5: increasingly more frequently put into the public sphere, their opinions
• 8:37
Speaker 5: are increasingly used online as fodder to sort of incite
• 8:44
Speaker 5: these kind of violent behaviors. And there's really nothing more
• 8:48
Speaker 5: important to our democracy than ensuring that judges feel safe
• 8:54
Speaker 5: to make unbiased rulings, because if they if they feel
• 9:00
Speaker 5: as though going one way or the other will cause
• 9:02
Speaker 5: them or their family harm, it erodes to the public
• 9:05
Speaker 5: confidence in why and how they're making their decisions. So
• 9:08
Speaker 5: this is a really important topic. And you know, I
• 9:11
Speaker 5: have a lot of friends who are judges too, and
• 9:14
  Speaker 5: they feel it.
• 9:15
Speaker 7: They know, talking to.
• 9:16
Speaker 3: Again with Attorney General JV. Mccusky, the buzz letters and
• 9:21
Speaker 3: or you know, for the entire year of twenty twenty
• 9:23
Speaker 3: five or AI JB. That's what everybody's talking about. And
• 9:27
Speaker 3: your office has got concerns about the ever growing dependency
• 9:32
Speaker 3: that we have in many circles about AI. There was
• 9:35
Speaker 3: another coalition of about forty Attorneys generals and getting together
• 9:39
Speaker 3: on something related to AI. Talk about that.
• 9:42
Speaker 5: Yeah, So I like to tell people, Dave that you
• 9:44
Speaker 5: are naturally intelligent, but I am artificially int I'm on peds.
• 9:50
Speaker 5: But what we're talking about in terms of artificial intelligence
• 9:54
Speaker 5: in large part right now is the protection of children
• 9:57
Speaker 5: and what these chatbots have been doing. And you know,
• 10:01
Speaker 5: it's just a part of this technology that nobody had
• 10:03
Speaker 5: a handle on but really really should have because the
• 10:06
Speaker 5: danger is very real is that if somebody gets on
• 10:09
Speaker 5: an AI chatbot and starts explaining that they're suicidal or
• 10:13
Speaker 5: that they you know, they have these grand plans to
• 10:16
Speaker 5: you know, murder their family and then kill themselves or whatever.
• 10:19
Speaker 5: These chatbots are not telling them not to and they're
• 10:23
Speaker 5: not alerting anybody these chatbots, and I can point you
• 10:28
Speaker 5: and your listeners to a myriad of screenshots of these
• 10:31
Speaker 5: chatbots in the wake of suicides and murders. The chatbots
• 10:34
Speaker 5: are saying that is a good plan. You need to
• 10:37
Speaker 5: honor your feelings, you need to make sure that you're
• 10:39
Speaker 5: taking care of yourself and your needs, et cetera, instead
• 10:42
Speaker 5: of responding with you need to go to a mental
• 10:45
Speaker 5: health professional, or you need to go find your parents
• 10:47
Speaker 5: right now and tell them you know you're sick and
• 10:50
Speaker 5: you need help. And it is part of the way
• 10:54
Speaker 5: that these chatbots are designed to like self actualize the
• 10:58
Speaker 5: person with which they're speaking, and there's been countless examples
• 11:02
Speaker 5: across the country where extreme tragedies have been it caused
• 11:08
Speaker 5: is maybe the right word, but definitely exacerbated by kids
• 11:13
Speaker 5: who are having huge mental health crisses turning to these
• 11:18
Speaker 5: AI chatbots for help and for them to actually push
• 11:22
Speaker 5: them into the violent cause of action course of action
• 11:26
Speaker 5: that ends in tragedy.
• 11:28
Speaker 3: Before we let you go, I want to just ask,
• 11:30
Speaker 3: is there anything particular on your mind? I don't know
• 11:33
Speaker 3: that you will be on the show. You're always welcome,
• 11:35
Speaker 3: but I don't know what you'll be on the show
• 11:36
Speaker 3: until after the new year. Of course, Christmas is coming
• 11:39
Speaker 3: up next week. Any anything on your mind related to
• 11:41
Speaker 3: that or anything any It's short time, buddy, I'm giving
• 11:44
Speaker 3: it to you so well.
• 11:46
Speaker 5: This is like at the right before the election when
• 11:48
Speaker 5: you give people five minutes to their elevators.
• 11:51
Speaker 3: But yeah, you're always welcome, you come on any time.
• 11:53
Speaker 3: But I'm just saying that. You know, I know that
• 11:55
Speaker 3: you're very much will be involved in the whole family
• 11:58
Speaker 3: thing as well. You should be, so I don't know
• 12:00
Speaker 3: how much time you'd have it. You're always welcome, you
• 12:02
Speaker 3: and the girls are always welcome here on the show.
• 12:04
Speaker 3: But I'm thought giving a little opportunity.
• 12:06
Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I think you know, for me this holiday
• 12:09
Speaker 5: season in particular, you know, we got kids that are
• 12:12
Speaker 5: ten and eight years old. You don't know how many
• 12:15
Speaker 5: more of these kinds of Christmases you're going to have,
• 12:18
Speaker 5: and so just taking a minute to slow down. Life's
• 12:20
Speaker 5: really really hard. You know for a lot of people.
• 12:24
Speaker 5: There's everybody works too much. Everybody's just running around like
• 12:27
Speaker 5: crazy people, and you know, just take a minute and
• 12:30
Speaker 5: take a deep breath and realize how grateful you should
• 12:33
Speaker 5: be for the things that are going great in your life.
• 12:35
Speaker 5: And you know, everybody's got stuff that isn't doesn't make
• 12:40
Speaker 5: them happy, but everybody's got stuff in their lives where
• 12:44
Speaker 5: they could find the people that love them and the
• 12:45
Speaker 5: people that care about them. And take a deep breath
• 12:47
Speaker 5: and really think about all the things in your life
• 12:50
Speaker 5: that are awesome. Because I think that's you know, that's
• 12:54
Speaker 5: that's that's the reason why these holidays are so special
• 12:58
Speaker 5: is because you can you can think back to fifty
• 13:00
Speaker 5: years down the road and say, man, you know, I
• 13:02
Speaker 5: really had a blessed life and I was surrounded by
• 13:05
Speaker 5: people that love me.
• 13:06
Speaker 3: Good way to leave it. That's that's pretty good stuff
• 13:09
Speaker 3: right there from you, mister Attorney General.
• 13:10
  Speaker 5: You asked just.
• 13:12
Speaker 3: Rowing off the top of your head, and it wasn't
• 13:13
  Speaker 3: even AI.
• 13:14
Speaker 5: Right, No, that was natural intelligence. And I will say
• 13:17
Speaker 5: that if anybody wants to comment on that, I always
• 13:20
Speaker 5: love to say you can call into the Bigley Pickley Wikly.
• 13:24
Speaker 3: Highline, yeah, or or the text line from Tony to Taylor,
• 13:26
  Speaker 3: either one.
• 13:27
Speaker 5: But Tony the Taylor text line, yes, right. I mean,
• 13:29
Speaker 5: it's just the alliterations are just jumping off the page.

• 17:56
Speaker 10: Good morning to you, and thank you for having me
• 17:58
Speaker 10: on your show so that I can announce that I'm
• 18:01
Speaker 10: running for the seventeenth Senate district, which covers most of
• 18:06
  Speaker 10: Kanawha County.
• 18:08
Speaker 3: Why you're somebody that's run for office before, You've been
• 18:11
Speaker 3: around politics for a long time. I'm going to get
• 18:13
Speaker 3: to your bio in just a minute. But why is
• 18:15
Speaker 3: it that you want to be state center out of
• 18:16
  Speaker 3: District seventeen.
• 18:18
Speaker 10: Well, if we look around the state in the county,
• 18:22
Speaker 10: and for many residents at kanaw County, West Virginia is
• 18:27
Speaker 10: not almost heaven. People are struggling to make ends meet,
• 18:31
Speaker 10: and most of their elected representatives just don't seem to care.
• 18:35
Speaker 10: Then you take a look at their legislative record and
• 18:38
Speaker 10: it shows that they're working on behalf of wealthy donors
• 18:41
Speaker 10: special interest rather than ordinary folks. That's why I'm running
• 18:46
Speaker 10: for the seventeenth district. Our legislature is out of touch
• 18:50
Speaker 10: with the people at West Virginia, and I feel that
• 18:53
Speaker 10: any political party that can't stand on the merits to
• 18:57
Speaker 10: improve the lives of workers don't deserve to be re elected.
• 19:02
Speaker 10: And I believe the residents of Kanawa County deserve a
• 19:05
Speaker 10: senator who generally cares about them and helps to make
• 19:09
Speaker 10: their lives better. And West Virginians are being crushed under
• 19:13
Speaker 10: the weight of inflation. And with my background and as
• 19:16
Speaker 10: a result of working for Senator Jay Rockefeller for thirty
• 19:19
Speaker 10: eight years, I'm confident that I understand like few others
• 19:26
Speaker 10: the problems facing our people, especially those struggling to get
• 19:30
Speaker 10: ahead and those who are left behind. And West Virginians,
• 19:34
Speaker 10: our people are not dumb. They're looking for a senator
• 19:38
Speaker 10: that shows up at city council meetings, who isn't afraid
• 19:41
Speaker 10: to talk to members of the community at the grocery store,
• 19:45
Speaker 10: farmers' markets in rural communities, and at various public events,
• 19:50
Speaker 10: and especially a senator who will not be a public
• 19:53
Speaker 10: to political interests that want to take our rights away.
• 19:57
Speaker 10: A senator who stands up in fights for him. And
• 20:00
Speaker 10: I'm running because I believe Canaw County and West Virginians
• 20:04
Speaker 10: are worth fighting for. And I have a strong track
• 20:07
Speaker 10: record of getting things done to improve people's lives, you know,
• 20:12
Speaker 10: like helping people get FEMA assistants when their homes were flooding.
• 20:15
Speaker 10: I work with many miners and widows to obtain their
• 20:19
Speaker 10: Black Along benefits. And I also help hundreds of veterans
• 20:23
Speaker 10: with their claims by cutting through red tape. And mostly
• 20:27
Speaker 10: I'm tired of West Virginia being ranked as forty eight
• 20:32
Speaker 10: forty ninth in the country. We can do better and
• 20:35
Speaker 10: every West Virginian deserves the opportunity to succeed. And for that,
• 20:41
Speaker 10: we need to improve education, increase job training opportunities, and
• 20:46
Speaker 10: provide affordable healthcare. Our people deserve better than what they're
• 20:51
Speaker 10: getting from the so called representatives at the state House.
• 20:55
Speaker 10: These politicians are not representing their constituents, not doing their job,
• 21:02
Speaker 10: and West Virginians want their elected leaders to focus on
• 21:05
Speaker 10: what really matters, such as bringing down, the cost of living,
• 21:10
Speaker 10: the cost of doing business, the cost of healthcare, electricity,
• 21:14
Speaker 10: natural gas. We want a more fairer tax system, better education,
• 21:19
Speaker 10: workforce development, and job creation. And I feel these are
• 21:23
Speaker 10: the issues that are on the minds of the citizens
• 21:26
  Speaker 10: of Kamala County.
• 21:28
Speaker 3: Talking to Wes Holden again, who is a Democrat running
• 21:31
Speaker 3: for States in the District seventeen, some of those things
• 21:33
Speaker 3: that you mentioned there West, like, for example, affordability that
• 21:36
Speaker 3: seems to be the buzzword as you know these days,
• 21:37
Speaker 3: and inflation and things of that nature. As a state senator,
• 21:41
Speaker 3: as a legislator in Charleston, what can you do about that?
• 21:47
  Speaker 7: Well, the.
• 21:49
Speaker 10: Legislators and what our government needs to do is represent
• 21:54
Speaker 10: the people. And you know, being a state senator is
• 21:56
Speaker 10: not having a title or belonging to a social club.
• 22:00
Speaker 10: We have to pass legislation and work on ideas that
• 22:05
Speaker 10: you know, you have to think out.
• 22:06
  Speaker 5: Of the box.
• 22:08
Speaker 10: You know, I travel to other states and been around
• 22:11
Speaker 10: you know, the country, and I look at things and
• 22:15
Speaker 10: you see what people are doing or read about this
• 22:19
Speaker 10: or that. It doesn't take a master, brilliant strategician to
• 22:24
Speaker 10: understand what's going on. I think we can be doing
• 22:27
Speaker 10: that in West Virginia, unfortunately, our legislature seems to be
• 22:32
Speaker 10: focusing on issues that don't really matter and don't improve
• 22:37
Speaker 10: the lives of fellow West Virginians.
• 22:39
Speaker 3: Give me an example of some of those issues, Wes
• 22:41
Speaker 3: that you think that the legislature, perhaps in the past,
• 22:44
Speaker 3: is focused on that you don't think, in your words,
• 22:47
Speaker 3: would improve the live Can you give us an example, Well,
• 22:51
  Speaker 3: just take.
• 22:51
Speaker 10: One example that comes to mind. You know, they got
• 22:54
Speaker 10: focused on keeping boys out of girls' bathrooms or transgender sports.
• 23:02
Speaker 10: From what I understand, there is only one transgender person
• 23:06
Speaker 10: up in the northern part of the state, and that
• 23:09
Speaker 10: really didn't you know, I might agree with those issues,
• 23:12
Speaker 10: but to keep your time and focus on in your
• 23:16
Speaker 10: political campaign on a single issue that doesn't matter to
• 23:21
Speaker 10: most West Virginians. Those are things that bother me the most,
• 23:25
Speaker 10: and I feel as a legislator, I want to be accountable.
• 23:31
Speaker 10: I want to listen to what are on the lines
• 23:34
Speaker 10: of the people instead of following along with someone's political agenda.
• 23:38
Speaker 10: And when the governor or the Senate president is not
• 23:43
Speaker 10: doing those things, I want to call them out and say, look,
• 23:46
Speaker 10: we need to be focusing on what matters to people.
• 23:50
Speaker 10: Not these little sideline gotcha issues.
• 23:53
Speaker 3: You mentioned your time in working for Senator Rockefeller. Give
• 23:57
Speaker 3: us a little bit more of your bio for people
• 23:59
Speaker 3: that may know who you are. You're quite well known
• 24:02
Speaker 3: in West Virginia political circles, but to talk about your
• 24:04
Speaker 3: work there with Rockefeller and just talk about your bio
• 24:06
Speaker 3: in general, who are you?
• 24:07
Speaker 10: Well, I'm a tenth generation West Virginia and my family's
• 24:12
Speaker 10: been here for a super long time, back in the
• 24:15
Speaker 10: days when the Indians are running around. I'm a decorated
• 24:19
Speaker 10: Army veteran. I received the Department of the Army's highest
• 24:24
Speaker 10: the word for heroism. I'm a veteran Vietnam War error.
• 24:29
Speaker 10: Excuse me, got a little tongue tied right, A veteran
• 24:32
Speaker 10: of the Vietnam Not a Vietnam veteran, but a Vietnam
• 24:36
Speaker 10: War era veteran. And I joined when Vietnam was going on,
• 24:42
Speaker 10: and fortunately or unfortunately, it all depends how you look
• 24:45
Speaker 10: at And instead of being sent to Vietnam, I got
• 24:50
  Speaker 10: sent to Germany.
• 24:51
  Speaker 3: And I was.
• 24:53
Speaker 10: A deputy State Director and I was in charge of
• 24:56
Speaker 10: constituent services. And one of the things that I did,
• 25:01
Speaker 10: I could tell you a story after a story of
• 25:03
Speaker 10: how I helped people, not necessarily for federal claims, but people.
• 25:10
Speaker 10: There's a guy, the first guy that I remember helping,
• 25:13
Speaker 10: came to me as riverbank was falling in and coming
• 25:18
Speaker 10: up close to his home, and he said, I got
• 25:20
Speaker 10: to save my home. He said, I've been to the
• 25:23
Speaker 10: other congressional offices, governor's offices, and they turned them down.
• 25:28
Speaker 10: And so I was sitting there thinking, what if it
• 25:32
Speaker 10: was me, who is going to help me? And that's
• 25:37
Speaker 10: what made me so successful as Senator Rockefeller and people,
• 25:43
Speaker 10: you know, even other congressional offices, I mean even people
• 25:45
Speaker 10: from other states. We can't help you, but call West
• 25:50
Speaker 10: and you know, I didn't have no guidebook, but I
• 25:53
Speaker 10: had to think out of the seat, out of the
• 25:56
Speaker 10: box and try to help people. That's what I did,
• 25:59
Speaker 10: and that's what I want to do for the people
• 26:02
Speaker 10: in the seventeenth district, you know, instead of politics as
• 26:06
Speaker 10: usual forget. You know, I'm not running to make you know,
• 26:11
Speaker 10: the Democratic Party what it used to be. I'm running
• 26:15
Speaker 10: for the people of the seventeenth district. And that's what
• 26:18
Speaker 10: people want to be. A true legislator, someone who cares
• 26:22
Speaker 10: listen just to their concerns, and more than that act
• 26:26
  Speaker 10: on them.
• 26:27
Speaker 3: You were talking with Wes Holden, who's a Democrat for
• 26:31
Speaker 3: State Center run down District seventeen. Now the currently seat
• 26:34
Speaker 3: is held by a Republican. You are a Democrat, as
• 26:37
Speaker 3: you've mentioned, and I've mentioned, it's not always easy these days, Wes,
• 26:40
Speaker 3: for a Democrat to gain any traction in West Virginia.
• 26:43
Speaker 10: Talk about that, Well, that is a fact. But I
• 26:47
Speaker 10: think if we you know, just much as I mentioned,
• 26:52
Speaker 10: if we take a look at their track record, they're
• 26:57
Speaker 10: not representing the people they're going after can legislation, and
• 27:03
Speaker 10: I think today if people would look, you know, be
• 27:08
Speaker 10: seriously informed, what has this governor, what has this legislature
• 27:15
Speaker 10: been doing for the people of West Virginia, let's say,
• 27:18
Speaker 10: in the past ten years, not really doing anything. We
• 27:22
Speaker 10: see unemployment increasing, we see jobs closing, we see schools closing.
• 27:30
Speaker 10: Someone needs to put the brakes on and try to
• 27:33
Speaker 10: figure out not necessarily we know what's wrong, but what
• 27:36
Speaker 10: are we going to do about it? And you know,
• 27:39
Speaker 10: when we are worked for Senator Rockefeller, Jay was very
• 27:43
Speaker 10: good about bringing people from outside the state, working with
• 27:47
Speaker 10: the Office of Economic Development, working with the Tourism Bureau,
• 27:52
Speaker 10: and we would bring people in. We call it the
• 27:56
Speaker 10: J train, and we'd go visit different sites and and
• 28:00
Speaker 10: try to fit their business with what West Virginia can do.
• 28:06
Speaker 10: But unfortunately, one of the things that we have to
• 28:09
Speaker 10: do is improve our education so that we have an
• 28:13
Speaker 10: educated workforce. And that is one of the primary things
• 28:18
Speaker 10: I want to work on is education.
• 28:22
Speaker 3: Let's talk about getting people to stay in West Virginia, Wes.
• 28:26
Speaker 3: You know that is an issue and the Republican your
• 28:28
Speaker 3: Republican counterparts would would agree the same, the same issue.
• 28:32
Speaker 3: We just aren't getting our young people to want to
• 28:35
Speaker 3: stay in West Virginia. There have been various programs designed
• 28:39
Speaker 3: to bring people into the Mountain States. We've seen those
• 28:43
Speaker 3: in Charleston, Elkins, some of these other areas to take
• 28:45
Speaker 3: Morgans out to take a part in those. But what
• 28:47
Speaker 3: do we need to do to make West Virginia a
• 28:50
Speaker 3: states Because we're losing population. And we're not just losing
• 28:54
Speaker 3: population because people are dying off. There are people that
• 28:57
Speaker 3: are choosing not to live in West Virginia for one reason.
• 28:59
Speaker 3: Another are either residents that are moving out of state
• 29:01
Speaker 3: or people maybe that aren't looking to West Virginia as
• 29:05
Speaker 3: a choice. What do we need to do to market
• 29:07
Speaker 3: West Virginia, perhaps two West Virginians to make them want
• 29:10
  Speaker 3: to stay here.
• 29:12
Speaker 10: Well, first off, if you look at it, most of
• 29:16
Speaker 10: our base are older people. Young people cannot find jobs.
• 29:23
Speaker 10: So and let's say you're wanting to move to West Virginia,
• 29:27
Speaker 10: what are you going to look at. You're going to
• 29:29
Speaker 10: look at our schools, You're going to look for a
• 29:32
Speaker 10: clean environment. You know, Kanawah County is blessed because we
• 29:36
Speaker 10: have a lot of those good things. But last year
• 29:39
Speaker 10: I ran as an independent for Congress and as a
• 29:44
Speaker 10: legislator for Kanah County, but also you're being a Senator
• 29:48
Speaker 10: for the state of West Virginia. It's a much bigger problem,
• 29:53
Speaker 10: and I just felt so bad. You know, those areas
• 29:59
Speaker 10: of economic divis elements that can be brought in, and
• 30:02
Speaker 10: we have to, you know, work with small mom and
• 30:07
Speaker 10: pop businesses. Those are the root, the basic foundation of
• 30:14
Speaker 10: building people. So if we could help more small businesses
• 30:18
Speaker 10: get started. And you know, with what Secretary PAC's doing,
• 30:23
Speaker 10: you know, he has a lot of good ideas, and
• 30:28
Speaker 10: you know, just because it's a Republican idea, I'm not
• 30:31
Speaker 10: afraid of working with that. I'm just want to work
• 30:35
Speaker 10: with them to try to make things better. And we
• 30:38
Speaker 10: need people who think ahead instead of being caught up
• 30:41
  Speaker 10: in local politics.
• 30:44
Speaker 3: But Dave Alan's showing five Any Lives has brought you
• 30:46
Speaker 3: a part. But I Live Healthy West Virginia presented by
• 30:48
Speaker 3: WVU Medicine, a podcast promoting healthier lifestyles and to beyond
• 30:51
Speaker 3: the state check have a leave. This episode's wv Metronews
• 30:53
Speaker 3: dot com and of the podcast mean you uh We's
• 30:56
Speaker 3: where can people learn more about your campaign?
• 30:59
Speaker 10: Well? I have the campaign's website, West for West Virginia Senate.
• 31:05
Speaker 10: You can go there and the website should be opening
• 31:08
Speaker 10: up and they can just look at my Facebook post
• 31:13
Speaker 10: West for West or West or West Virginia Senat or
• 31:16
Speaker 10: even look at what I stand for. But many people
• 31:20
Speaker 10: when I campaigned last year, many people remember me and
• 31:24
Speaker 10: out of the clear blue when I'd be talking to
• 31:27
Speaker 10: them wherever, and they say, don't you remember me? You
• 31:30
Speaker 10: helped me with this, you helped me with that. And
• 31:33
Speaker 10: I think that's what people are looking for in a legislator.
• 31:37
Speaker 10: They're not looking for some figurehead or party head. They're
• 31:41
Speaker 10: looking for someone who cares about the people. And that's
• 31:45
Speaker 10: what and that's why I want to get involved. I
• 31:47
Speaker 10: could be doing other things, but I care about the people.
• 31:52
Speaker 10: As I also said, I'm a tenth generation West Virginian
• 31:57
Speaker 10: and my roots are here. You know, my heart is here,
• 32:02
Speaker 10: and that's why I'm here and I want to do something.
• 32:07
Speaker 3: Wesley Holding, a Democrat running for State Senati District seventeen,
• 32:11
Speaker 3: pleasure to have you on the show. We wish you
• 32:13
Speaker 3: luck in the upcoming year and have a very happy
• 32:15
  Speaker 3: holiday season.
• 32:15
Speaker 10: Thanks a lot, well, thank you, and let's work together
• 32:19
Speaker 10: to address the challenges facing us in West Virginia and
• 32:23
Speaker 10: build a future that's worthy of our highest aspirations. We
• 32:27
Speaker 10: can do better, we must do better, and the future
• 32:30

• 38:01
Speaker 3: We'll join us Mike called Masteller. He's a Democrat running

• 38:07
Speaker 3: the show coming up tomorrow. Quick editor's note, programming note.
• 38:11
Speaker 3: I actually have a couple of those today. It's always
• 38:13
Speaker 3: a good time when I get to go on the
• 38:14
Speaker 3: air with Northern Dave as in Dave Wilson talk Line
• 38:18
Speaker 3: co host and unless his words, unless I can find
• 38:21
Speaker 3: someone better or more interesting between now to eleven thirty,
• 38:25
Speaker 3: He's asked me to join him on talk line today
• 38:27
Speaker 3: at eleven thirty. I don't exactly know what we're going
• 38:28
Speaker 3: to talk about, but we will find something. Of course,
• 38:31
Speaker 3: it's always interesting. As I said, when Wilson and I
• 38:34
Speaker 3: get together, maybe we'll get into that idea that a
• 38:39
Speaker 3: text to Metro News Midday had last week that we
• 38:41
Speaker 3: do a calendar featuring all the Daves in this company
• 38:45
Speaker 3: and we call it Holla Dave's with me and Wilson
• 38:49
Speaker 3: and Weekly and Dave Jacqueline. Interesting idea anyway, I probably
• 38:55
Speaker 3: as the way it's looking right now, if you can't
• 38:56
Speaker 3: get someone better. TJ's on vacation this week. I'll be
• 38:59
Speaker 3: in with Wilson around eleven thirty today on talk line.
• 39:02
Speaker 3: Of course, I'll come back later for Metro News at midday,
• 39:05
Speaker 3: and speaking to calendars, there was a night them in
• 39:07
Speaker 3: the news. I'll tell you this real quick, and there
• 39:11
Speaker 3: are particular communities here in the Kanawl Valley in the
• 39:14
Speaker 3: governmental branches that may may be struggling a little bit
• 39:17
Speaker 3: for cash. But I want to check into this. I
• 39:19
Speaker 3: read an article over the weekend from the Wall Street
• 39:22
Speaker 3: Journal about a small town not in West Virginia that
• 39:25
Speaker 3: was struggling for funds and the people around the town
• 39:29
Speaker 3: created a nude or semi nude calendar of the people
• 39:34
Speaker 3: in town to raise money, and apparently it was a
• 39:37
Speaker 3: big hit. So apparently if you need quick funds for
• 39:43
Speaker 3: your town, that's the way to do it. Now, I
• 39:46
Speaker 3: want to try not to keep that mental image burned
• 39:49
Speaker 3: in my head. The whole town in this case turned
• 39:51
Speaker 3: to OnlyFans, So just saying you might want to leg
• 39:56
Speaker 3: into it, because apparently worked for them. All right, So
• 39:58
Speaker 3: I said, I had a programming note for you. Tomorrow
• 40:00
Speaker 3: will be one week away from Christmas Eve, and we're
• 40:03
Speaker 3: going to be doing our traditional Jewish Christmas spectacular that
• 40:07
Speaker 3: we call it the thing that I've been doing on
• 40:09
Speaker 3: the local show for a few years now. I'll be
• 40:10
Speaker 3: joined by state Democratic Party chair in Delegate Mike Pushkin,
• 40:13
Speaker 3: but not in a political way, So one day of
• 40:17
Speaker 3: the year that we go politics free, just Mike and
• 40:21
Speaker 3: his guitar, but he's not alone. Bringing one of my
• 40:23
Speaker 3: favorite bands here from the Valley, Amos Steel. They are
• 40:27
Speaker 3: going to be in studio with Mike. You may have
• 40:30
Speaker 3: heard these guys a couple of weeks ago on the
• 40:31
Speaker 3: show that they did just prior to their album drop
• 40:34
Speaker 3: party over at Marty Gras, and these guys rock and
• 40:37
Speaker 3: they're going to be with us. Tony the Taylor, who
• 40:39
Speaker 3: sort of serves as the manager of those guys, who
• 40:42
Speaker 3: is going to join us in the studio, and who
• 40:43
Speaker 3: knows what other people from the musical world we may
• 40:45
Speaker 3: be bringing in A big shout out to Richard Lindsay
• 40:48
Speaker 3: in family as that will be sponsoring the show as
• 40:49
Speaker 3: they did last year, and I'm going to do something
• 40:52
Speaker 3: on the show a little bit different this year. Of course,
• 40:54
Speaker 3: we're going to give you a full fifty two minutes
• 40:57
Speaker 3: or whatever it breaks down to after commercials of Christmas music.
• 41:00
Speaker 3: I'll let Mike and the guys that am to Steel
• 41:02
Speaker 3: handle that I'm going to extend an invitation to some
• 41:07
Speaker 3: of my frequent guests on the program, some from the
• 41:10
Speaker 3: world of politics, some not a Republican Democrats to stop
• 41:13

• 41:19
Speaker 3: Randy Barrett, Winfield, Scott Edwards from Hurricane, Kay Summers from Clintena,

• 42:00
Speaker 3: journalistic friends, Steven Allen, Adams, Amelia Nicely, Jim Workman. You
• 42:03
Speaker 3: get the idea. They're all invited. Maybe the first radio

Speaker 3: show in history ever to be shut down by the
• 42:08
Speaker 3: fire Marshall, some of our friends in the building from
• 42:10

• 42:13
Speaker 3: I'm going to stop by too. It's gonna be a

• 42:17
Speaker 3: the annual Jewish Christmas Spectacular brought to you by Richard

Speaker 3: So it gets to President's President Trump's comments and the

Speaker 3: the comment posted on Truth's Social by the President yesterday
• 42:55
Speaker 3: was as follows, A very sad thing happened last night
• 42:58
Speaker 3: in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling but once
• 43:01
Speaker 3: very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away

• 43:18
Speaker 3: sometimes referred to as TDS. He was known to have
• 43:21
Speaker 3: driven people crazy by his raging obsession. President Donald J.
• 43:26
Speaker 3: Trump editors note this is Donald Trump talking about Donald
• 43:29

• 43:33
Speaker 3: Trump administrations surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness and
• 43:37

• 43:40
Speaker 3: May Rob and Michelle rest in peace. Comments posted on
• 43:44
Speaker 3: Truth's Social from President Donald Trump yesterday, and I read
• 43:48
Speaker 3: some of the comments yesterday on social media. Comment this

• 47:43
Speaker 3: do we expect for our senior senator to not criticize
• 47:48
Speaker 3: Trump for his disgraceful and deranged comments. Her silence equals
• 47:51
Speaker 3: support and consensus. This is not another person who deserves
• 47:55
Speaker 3: to represent West Virginia if she backs someone who has
• 47:57
Speaker 3: no common decency, says the text. What many and I
• 48:01
Speaker 3: can't speak for Senator Shilly more Capital, but what many
• 48:04
Speaker 3: people in the Republican party will say to you is
• 48:08
Speaker 3: that they are in line with the president's economic policies,
• 48:12
Speaker 3: they're in line with what things he's done at the border,

• 48:36
Speaker 3: this is a very very good analogy, who said, it's
• 48:40
Speaker 3: what the President Trump needs is a phone that's actually
• 48:44
Speaker 3: not connected to anything. And this person said, I give
• 48:46
Speaker 3: it to my niece. He said, I give it to
• 48:49
Speaker 3: my niece, and she thinks she's posting on social media.
• 48:54

• 49:01
Speaker 3: my buddies ideas I was talking to earlier this morning.
• 49:04
Speaker 3: So maybe that's what we do, is we give we
• 49:06
Speaker 3: give Trump, we give President Trump a phone, and we
• 49:09
Speaker 3: tell him that he's put posting on social media.
• 49:12
  Speaker 6: But I don't know that.
