- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Welcome to our 2023 Broome County Teams Preview.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: I'm joined by my former broadcast partner, Roger Neal, the sports voice of the Southern Tier.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: Roger and I will share knowledge and insight into the Broome County teams in section four.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Let it rip, Roger.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Well, I'll tell you, it's exciting, isn't it?
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: As football season is here and we're getting underway here in just a few days.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: The interesting thing to me, Tim, is that some of these schools in week what they call zero will play schools out of section four.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Others elect not to.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: So it's all up to the individual schools if they want to add that extra game.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Most, of course, in the section will play eight.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: But some, again, like Banghamton, for example, uh, will be playing out of section.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: They'll play section on Warwick in Orange County.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: That gets things underway on Friday.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: And then the next time out, they'll play at Proctor.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: So a couple of away games to get things going.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: And Coach Sento is facing again a tough battle in double-A.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: First of all, there are only three teams, but the other two teams are always very difficult to play: Elmira and Corning.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: And this year, of course, with that, three teams, you can't afford to lose any games, and the Patriots have been struggling over the past few years.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: They're hoping to get a big season out of Kasheib Summers standout running back.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Last year, 18 touchdowns and over 1,200 yards in rushing.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: The tough thing is for the Patriots, last year, two and eight.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: The last four seasons, including spring and fall ball in 2021, they're 7-27.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: So they've got a lot of work to do.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: And again, no easy tests in the three teams, the two of which will be playing again against Elmira and Corning.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Home opener set for the Patriots will be against Auburn coming up on Friday, September the 15th.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Also, how about Shenango Valley?
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: They have no easy test.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: CV moving up to Class B.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Oh, not easy at all.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: B and C are loaded with top teams, and Shenango Valley has no easy test.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: How about this to open up when you move into an upper class?
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Shenango Valley opens against Maine Enwell at Spartan Stadium on Friday, the 8th of September.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Last year, CV Class C action 3-2 and 5-4 overall.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Hopefully they can continue to improve, but again, a tough test to open up the season for them.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: How about the Johnson City Wildcats, also out of Class B?
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Coach Todd Place will have no easy test either, as they are going to be matching up in their opener against Susquehanna Valley.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: SV, of course, is in C.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: The Wildcats are in B.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: It should be a good and a very difficult test for both teams as they open up the season.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Then, of course, the elephant in the room, anytime you're talking football in section four, Maine and well, the Spartans.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Back-to-back state championships.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Last year 13-0.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Now this year, after two outstanding quarterbacks have moved on, Austin Nyshot, a converted wide out, will be playing at quarterback for Coach Gallagher.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: That system is so superb.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: It'll be very interesting to follow in the early going how he adjusts in a new role from a wide out to a quarterback calling all the shots in the backfield.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: And of course, they're led not only by Nyshot, but Adam DeSantis, senior captain.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: He goes both ways.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: He is one of the top players, not just in section four, not just in the state, but around the east.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: And he is one tremendous ball player.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: So a lot of people will be keeping an eye on him.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Then, of course, the Susquehanna Valley Sabres out of Class C.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Last year, five and four, three and two in their division.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Coach Mike Ford has done a tremendous job.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: And well, you can figure it out.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Is B more difficult to play in or C?
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Many people say class C is as balanced and tough overall as any section, any class in the state of New York.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Certainly it is very difficult.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: And they have no easy test playing at Johnson City as they open up on Friday, September the 8th.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: So football is knocking on the door.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: It's an exciting time for high school football fans and exciting for us, Tim, following the action of some of these top teams in section four.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: Yes, thank you, Roger.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: A superb job early on in the season with the preview.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: We really appreciate that and looking forward to going throughout the season with you and following all these teams as they progress throughout the season and hopefully advance towards the goals that they all have right now.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: But we know they all can't be champions, but uh as long as they learn the good life skills and camaraderie and how to play as part of a team and truly enjoy the game for what it's meant to be.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: It's very enjoyable and it does draw the most competitive people.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: So thank you, Roger.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Now I'll cover the remaining Broom County teams.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: We'll begin with Shenango Forks.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: Dave Hogan begins his 15th season as head coach of the Blue Devils.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: Shenango Forks is coming off a strong eight and one season, but subpar by their standards.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: They lost in the Section 4 title game on their home field, no less, to a much improved Waverly team.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: And it's ironic that Coach Hogan's dad, also named Dave, was the quarterback at Waverly when his uncle Robert Hogan was head coach.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: And there's another Dave Hogan at Waverly, and that's Dave's second cousin, and he is the track coach.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: You might say coaching runs in the Hogan family.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: Schneel Forks lost a lot of impact seniors to graduation, but still have a good group of seniors that are returning.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: Consequently, this will be a younger than normal fork squad, but forks is forks.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Some student athletes to watch for the Blue Devils is senior tight end linebacker Walker Paskey, senior offensive line, defensive line, Dustin Jump, senior fullback linebacker Chris Boyle, and senior wide receiver defensive back Steven Samsel, junior running back linebacker Lucas Bartlow, and junior running back defensive back Finn Stark.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: Shenangle Fork's strength strength will be their offensive line and running backs.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: Their running game may be by a committee of four or five rather than the typical two or three.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: And they're going to be tested in week one against the Windsor Black Knights.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: The Windsor Black Knights in Class B are coached by Tim Hogan.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: There's another Hogan, told ya.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: Coach Hogan begins his sixteenth season as head coach of the Black Knights.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: And they begin their second consecutive season with a bowl game, the annual Hogan Bowl against Shenango Forks.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: Windsor lost the Hogan Bowl last season in a close one, 12-19.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: That game could have gone either way, and I expect a very similar game this weekend.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: This will be the only game this season where a Coach Hogan-led team is guaranteed to win.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: Windsor lost only a few student athletes to graduation and return a majority of their core student athletes.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Their 2022 season ended with a loss in the sectional semifinals to Norwich by one point.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: Some student athletes to watch for the Black Knights are senior running back linebacker Daver, who rushed for over 1,000 yards last season, and senior Mason McCombs, running back linebacker, who also rushed for over a thousand yards last season and was a Class B all-state selection.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: Their quarterback will be junior Ashton Werner.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: And his number one receiver just happens to be his brother, Cohen Werner, who I understand is always open.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: Typical receiver, especially when the wide receiver is your brother.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: Now on to the Whitney Point Golden Eagles of the independent classification.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Whitney Point is led by second-year coach Michael Hayes.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: The Eagles are looking to improve on last season's two and seven record.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: They had a lot of sophomores last season, which translates to a lot of juniors with experience this season, although their depth is a little bit low.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: Barring injuries, they should make a significant mark in the independent classification.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: Their overall team speed is very good, and you know what they say about speed.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: You either have it or you're chasing those who have it.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: Some student athletes to watch at Whitney Point are a new starting quarterback, senior James Kraft, and junior wide receiver, slot back and running back Joseph V.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Rendenberg, and also senior offensive line and defensive line Dan Slack.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: They begin their season with two away games.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: Last week in their week zero game, they came away victorious with a 42-8 win over Midlakes.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: This weekend they faced deposit Hancock out of Class D.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: And on September 16th, their home opener against Dryden, it's going to be on their new well-deserved turf field.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: The good old days of grass, dirt, and mud are behind them.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: Now on to the Vessel Golden Bears in Class A.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: James Crundan begins his third season as head coach.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: The team's record has improved in each of Coach Crundan's first two seasons.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: 3-6 in 2021 and 6-4 last season.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: But two of their losses came at the hands of Union Endicott.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: The last one really hurt.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: A 14-30 loss to UE in a Section 4 championship game.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: Believe me, that's locker room material, but they've got two games before they play UE and they can't get caught looking ahead.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: They returned over 20 seniors, and most are contributors from last season.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: Defensively, they should be quicker than they've been, and that translates very well when you think that they had three shutouts last season and held two other opponents to six.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: That's tough to do.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: Now they've also got a new assistant coach this year, Shane Heard.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: You may have heard of him.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: He's a longtime UE coach and most recently the quarterback coach at Cornell University.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: I had the opportunity to coach with Shane at the Ernie Davis Exceptional Senior Classic.
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: I can still hear Shane yelling encouragement during a sideline tackling drill.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: Tackle the upfield hip.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: Tackle the upfield hip.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: Good coach.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: And I think there's going to be some good things happening there at Vestel.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: So look for some new wrinkles at Vestel, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: Vestel opens up this weekend with a home game against Baldwinsville from Section 3.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: And then next weekend, they play another Section 3 opponent, Wes Jenny, at the JMA Wireless Dome, formerly called the Carrier Dome.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: That'll be a nice opportunity for the whole program.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: And then their third game that they can't get caught looking ahead at is going to be home against Union Endicott.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: Some student athletes to watch at Vestal, our senior quarterback Camden Schaefer, who is a three-year starter.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: Their senior running back slash fullback, I'm sorry, running back slash free safety, Liam Neely, and their senior offensive tackle and punt long snapper Mickey McGovern.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: This brings us to our final Broome County team, and that's the Unendicott Tigers, led by coach Tommy Bellino entering his 11th season.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: Their 2022 season was one of their better seasons in a while.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: They finished 11-2, and they lost in the state championship game.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: A lot of big linemen return, and that should be a strength.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: And we all know that controlling the line of scrimmage is the name of the game.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: If you control the line of scrimmage, that gives you the flexibility on both sides of the ball.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: Yue has been a well-balanced team offensively.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: They play ambidextrously and make you defend the whole field.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: Look for them to throw the ball a lot.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: They start off with a real test.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: They're going to play at Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, who was always an outstanding program.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Then they return home to face Cicero, North Syracuse.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: And then the third game of the season, they're going to play at Vestal.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: That should be a really good game, also.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Some student athletes to watch for the Union Endicott Tigers is senior offensive lineman and defensive lineman.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: Kwimani Vary Powell, who was a fifth fifth team All-State selection in 2022.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: Another outstanding offensive lineman and defensive lineman is Jalen Yearwood.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: Running back Cooper Hughes and linebacker Max Godzik.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: This completes our Broome County Teams preview.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: I hope you found all our team previews informative.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: You're all set for the 2023 season.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: This weekend we began keeping score.
