Speaker 1: Book one, Tell me, o muse of that ingenious hero
• 0:05
Speaker 1: who traveled far and wide after he had sacked the
• 0:09
Speaker 1: famous town of Troy. Many cities did he visit, and
• 0:14
Speaker 1: many were the nations with whose manners and customs he
• 0:16
Speaker 1: was acquainted. Moreover, he suffered much by sea while trying
• 0:20
Speaker 1: to save his own life and bring his men safely home.
• 0:24
Speaker 1: But do what he might, he could not save his men,
• 0:28
Speaker 1: for they perished through their own sheer folly in eating
• 0:31
Speaker 1: the cattle of the sun god Hyperion. So the god
• 0:35
Speaker 1: prevented them from ever reaching home. Tell me too about
• 0:39
Speaker 1: all these things, o, daughter of Jove, from whatsoever source
• 0:42
Speaker 1: you may know them. So now all who escaped death
• 0:47
Speaker 1: in battle or by shipwreck had got safely home, except Ulysses,
• 0:52
Speaker 1: and he, though he was longing to return to his
• 0:55
Speaker 1: wife and country, was detained by the goddess Calypso, who
• 0:59
Speaker 1: had got him into a large cave and wanted to
• 1:02
Speaker 1: marry him. But as years went by, there came a
• 1:05
Speaker 1: time when the gods settled that he should go back
• 1:08
Speaker 1: to Ithaca. Even then, however, when he was among his
• 1:11
Speaker 1: own people, his troubles were not yet over. Nevertheless, all
• 1:16
Speaker 1: the gods had now begun to pity him, except Neptune,
• 1:19
Speaker 1: who still persecuted him without ceasing and would not let
• 1:23
Speaker 1: him get home. Now, Neptune had gone off to the Ethiopians,
• 1:28
Speaker 1: who are at the world's end and lie in two halves,
• 1:31
Speaker 1: the one looking west and the other east. He had
• 1:35
Speaker 1: gone there to accept a hcotom of sheep and oxen,
• 1:38
Speaker 1: and was enjoying himself at his festival. But the other
• 1:41
Speaker 1: gods met in the house of Olympian Jove, and the
• 1:44
Speaker 1: sire of gods and men spoke first. At that moment,
• 1:48
Speaker 1: he was thinking of Egysthus, who had been killed by
• 1:51
Speaker 1: Agamemnon son Orestes. So he said to the other gods,
• 1:55
Speaker 1: See now how men lay blame upon us gods, for
• 1:58
Speaker 1: what is, after all but their own folly. Look at Egisthus.
• 2:03
Speaker 1: He must needs make love to Agamemnon's wife unrighteously, and
• 2:07
Speaker 1: then kill Agamemnon, though he knew it would be the
• 2:10
Speaker 1: death of him, for I sent Mercury to warn him
• 2:13
Speaker 1: not to do either of these things, inasmuch as Orestes
• 2:16
Speaker 1: would be sure to take his revenge when he grew
• 2:18
Speaker 1: up and wanted to return home. Mercury told him this
• 2:22
Speaker 1: in all good will, but he would not listen. And
• 2:25
Speaker 1: now he has paid for everything in full. Then Minerva, said, father,
• 2:31
Speaker 1: son of Saturn, king of Kings. It served Egisthus right,
• 2:35
Speaker 1: and so it would any one else who does as
• 2:37
Speaker 1: he did. But Egisthus is neither here nor there. It
• 2:41
Speaker 1: is for Ulysses that my heart bleeds when I think
• 2:44
Speaker 1: of his sufferings in that lonely seagirt island, far away,
• 2:48
Speaker 1: poor man, from all his friends. It is an island
• 2:51
Speaker 1: covered with forest, in the very middle of the sea,
• 2:54
Speaker 1: and a goddess lives there, daughter of the magician Atlas,
• 2:58
Speaker 1: who looks after the bottom of the oak and carries
• 3:01
Speaker 1: the great columns that keep heaven and earth asunder. This
• 3:05
Speaker 1: daughter of Atlas has got hold of poor, unhappy Ulysses,
• 3:09
Speaker 1: and keeps trying, by every kind of blandishment to make
• 3:12
Speaker 1: him forget his home, so that he is tired of
• 3:15
Speaker 1: life and thinks of nothing, but how he may once
• 3:18
Speaker 1: more see the smoke of his own chimneys. You, sir,
• 3:21
Speaker 1: take no heed of this. And yet, when Ulysses was
• 3:24
Speaker 1: before Troy, did he not propitiate you with many a
• 3:27
Speaker 1: burnt sacrifice. Why then, should you keep on being so
• 3:31
Speaker 1: angry with him, and Jove said, my child, what are
• 3:35
Speaker 1: you talking about? How can I forget Ulysses than whom
• 3:39
Speaker 1: there is no more capable man on earth, nor more
• 3:42
Speaker 1: liberal in his offerings to the immortal gods that live
• 3:45
Speaker 1: in heaven. Bear in mind, however, that Neptune is still
• 3:49
Speaker 1: furious with Ulysses for having blinded an eye of Polyphemus,
• 3:53
Speaker 1: king of the Psyclops. Polyphemus is sun to Neptune by
• 3:57
Speaker 1: the Nymphthuosa, daughter to the Sea king forces. Therefore, though
• 4:02
Speaker 1: he will not kill Ulysses outright, he torments him by
• 4:06
Speaker 1: preventing him from getting home. Still, let us lay our
• 4:10
Speaker 1: heads together and see how we can help him to return.
• 4:13
Speaker 1: Neptune will then be pacified, for if we are all
• 4:16
Speaker 1: of a mind, he can hardly stand out against us
• 4:19
Speaker 1: and Minervas said father, son of Saturn, king of Kings.
• 4:23
Speaker 1: If then the gods now mean that Ulysses should get home,
• 4:27
Speaker 1: we should first send Mercury to the Ogygian island to
• 4:30
Speaker 1: tell Calypso that we have made up our minds and
• 4:33
Speaker 1: that he is to return. In the meantime, I will
• 4:37
Speaker 1: go to Ithaca to put heart into Ulysses, son to Lemachus.
• 4:41
Speaker 1: I will embolden him to call the Achaeans in assembly
• 4:44
Speaker 1: and speak out to the suitors of his mother Penelope,
• 4:47
Speaker 1: who persist in eating up any number of his sheep
• 4:50
Speaker 1: and oxen. I will also conduct him to Sparta and
• 4:54
Speaker 1: to Pylos, to see if he can hear anything about
• 4:57
Speaker 1: the return of his dear father, For this will make peace.
• 5:00
Speaker 1: People speak well of him, So saying she bound on
• 5:04
Speaker 1: her glittering gold sandals, imperishable, with which she can fly
• 5:09
Speaker 1: like the wind over land or sea. She grasped the
• 5:13
Speaker 1: redoubtable bronze shod spear, so stout and sturdy and strong,
• 5:17
Speaker 1: wherewith she quells the ranks of heroes who have displeased her.
• 5:21
Speaker 1: And down she darted from the topmost summits of Olympus,
• 5:24
Speaker 1: whereon forthwith she was in Ithaca at the gateway of
• 5:28
Speaker 1: Ulysses House, disguised as a visitor Mentes, chief of the Tafians,
• 5:33
Speaker 1: and she held a bronze spear in her hand. There
• 5:37
Speaker 1: she found the lordly suitors seated on hides of the oxen,
• 5:40
Speaker 1: which they had killed and eaten, and playing drafts. In
• 5:43
Speaker 1: front of the house. Men, servants and pages were bustling
• 5:47
Speaker 1: about to wait upon them, some mixing wine with water
• 5:50
Speaker 1: in the mixing bowls, some cleaning down the tables with
• 5:53
Speaker 1: wet sponges and laying them out again, and some cutting
• 5:57
Speaker 1: up great quantities of meat. Telemachus saw her long before
• 6:02
Speaker 1: any one else did. He was sitting moodily among the suitors,
• 6:06
Speaker 1: thinking about his brave father and how he would send
• 6:09
Speaker 1: them flying out of the house if he were to
• 6:11
Speaker 1: come to his own again and be honored as in
• 6:13
Speaker 1: days gone by. Thus brooding as he sat among them,
• 6:17
Speaker 1: he caught sight of Minerva and went straight to the gate,
• 6:21
Speaker 1: for he was vexed that a stranger should be kept
• 6:23
Speaker 1: waiting for admittance. He took her right hand in his
• 6:26
Speaker 1: own and bade her give him her spear. Welcome, said
• 6:30
Speaker 1: he to our house, and when you have partaken of food,
• 6:33
Speaker 1: you shall tell us what you have come for. He
• 6:36
Speaker 1: led the way as he spoke, and Minerva followed him.
• 6:40
Speaker 1: When they were within, he took her spear and set
• 6:43
Speaker 1: it in the spear stand against a strong bearing post,
• 6:46
Speaker 1: along with the many other spears of his unhappy father,
• 6:49
Speaker 1: and he conducted her to a richly decorated seat, under
• 6:52
Speaker 1: which he threw a cloth of damask. There was a
• 6:55
Speaker 1: footstool also for her feet, and he set another seat
• 6:59
Speaker 1: near her for himself, away from the suitors, that she
• 7:02
Speaker 1: might not be annoyed while eating by their noise and insolence,
• 7:05
Speaker 1: and that he might ask her more freely about his father.
• 7:09
Speaker 1: A maid servant then brought them water in a beautiful
• 7:12
Speaker 1: golden ewer, and poured it into a silver basin for
• 7:15
Speaker 1: them to wash their hands, and she drew a clean
• 7:18
Speaker 1: table beside them. An upper servant brought them bread and
• 7:22
Speaker 1: offered them many good things of what there was in
• 7:24
Speaker 1: the house. The carver fetched them plates of all manner
• 7:27
Speaker 1: of meats, and set cups of gold by their side,
• 7:30
Speaker 1: and a man servant brought them wine and poured it
• 7:33
Speaker 1: out for them. Then the suitors came in and took
• 7:37
Speaker 1: their places on the benches and seats. Forthwith men servants
• 7:42
Speaker 1: poured water over their hands. Maids went round with the
• 7:45
Speaker 1: bread baskets, pages filled the mixing bowls with wine and water,
• 7:49
Speaker 1: and they laid their hands upon the good things that
• 7:51
Speaker 1: were before them. As soon as they had had enough
• 7:54
Speaker 1: to eat and drink, they wanted music and dancing, which
• 7:57
Speaker 1: are the crowning embellishments of a banquet. So a servant
• 8:00
Speaker 1: brought a liar to Phemeus, who may compelled perforce to
• 8:04
Speaker 1: sing to them. As soon as he touched his lyre
• 8:07
Speaker 1: and began to sing, Telemachus spoke low to Minerva, with
• 8:11
Speaker 1: his head close to hers, that no man might hear.
• 8:14
Speaker 1: I hope, sir, said he that you will not be
• 8:16
Speaker 1: offended with what I am going to say. Singing comes
• 8:19
Speaker 1: cheap to those who do not pay for it, and
• 8:22
Speaker 1: all this is done at the cost of one whose
• 8:24
Speaker 1: bones lie rotting in some wilderness or grinding to powder
• 8:27
Speaker 1: in the surf. If these men were to see my
• 8:30
Speaker 1: father come back to Ithaca, they would pray for longer
• 8:33
Speaker 1: legs rather than a longer purse. For money would not
• 8:36
Speaker 1: serve them. But he alas has fallen on ill fate.
• 8:40
Speaker 1: And even when people do sometimes say that he is coming,
• 8:43
Speaker 1: we no longer heed them. We shall never see him again.
• 8:48
Speaker 1: And now, sir, tell me, and tell me true who
• 8:51
Speaker 1: you are and where you come from. Tell me of
• 8:54
Speaker 1: your town and parents, what manner of ship you came in,
• 8:57
Speaker 1: how your crew brought you to Ithaca, and of what
• 9:00
Speaker 1: nation they declared themselves to be. For you cannot have
• 9:03
Speaker 1: come by land. Tell me also truly, for I want
• 9:06
Speaker 1: to know. Are you a stranger to this house, or
• 9:09
Speaker 1: have you been here in my father's time? In the
• 9:12
Speaker 1: old days we had many visitors, for my father went
• 9:15
Speaker 1: about much by himself. And Minerva answered, I will tell
• 9:19
Speaker 1: you truly and particularly all about it. I am Menes,
• 9:23
Speaker 1: son of Anchialus, and I am king of the Taphians.
• 9:27
Speaker 1: I have come here with my ship and crew on
• 9:29
Speaker 1: a voyage to men of a foreign tongue, being bound
• 9:32
Speaker 1: for Tamesa with a cargo of iron, and I shall
• 9:35
Speaker 1: bring back copper. As for our ship, it lies over
• 9:38
Speaker 1: yonder off the open country, away from the town, in
• 9:41
Speaker 1: the harbor Rayethron, under the wooded mountain Neritum. Our fathers
• 9:46
Speaker 1: were friends before us, as old Laertes will tell you
• 9:49
Speaker 1: if you will go and ask him. They say, however,
• 9:52
Speaker 1: that he never comes to town now, and lives by
• 9:54
Speaker 1: himself in the country, faring hardly, with an old woman
• 9:58
Speaker 1: to look after him and get his dinner for him
• 10:00
Speaker 1: him when he comes in tired from pottering about his vineyard.
• 10:04
Speaker 1: They told me your father was at home again, and
• 10:06
Speaker 1: that is why I came. But it seems the gods
• 10:09
Speaker 1: are still keeping him back, for he is not dead
• 10:12
Speaker 1: yet not on the mainland. It is more likely he
• 10:15
Speaker 1: is on some segret island in mid ocean, or a
• 10:17
Speaker 1: prisoner among savages who are detaining him against his will.
• 10:21
Speaker 1: I am no prophet and know very little about omens.
• 10:25
Speaker 1: But I speak as it is borne in upon me
• 10:27
Speaker 1: from heaven. And I assure you that he will not
• 10:29
Speaker 1: be away much longer, for he is a man of
• 10:32
Speaker 1: such resource that even though he were in chains of iron,
• 10:35
Speaker 1: he would find some means of getting home again. But
• 10:38
Speaker 1: tell me, and tell me true, can Yunisses really have
• 10:42
Speaker 1: such a fine looking fellow for a son. You are
• 10:45
Speaker 1: indeed wonderfully like him about the head and eyes. For
• 10:48
Speaker 1: we were close friends before he set sail for Troy,
• 10:50
Speaker 1: where the flower of all the Argives went. Also since
• 10:54
Speaker 1: that time we have never either of us seen the other.
• 10:58
Speaker 1: My mother answered, Telemach tells me, I am son to Ulysses.
• 11:02
Speaker 1: But it is a wise child that knows his own father,
• 11:05
Speaker 1: would that I were son to one who had grown
• 11:07
Speaker 1: old upon his own estates. For since you ask me,
• 11:11
Speaker 1: there is no more ill starred man under heaven than
• 11:13
Speaker 1: he whom they tell me is my father, And Minerva said,
• 11:18
Speaker 1: there is no fear of your race dying out yet,
• 11:20
Speaker 1: while Penelope has such a fine son as you are.
• 11:23
Speaker 1: But tell me, and tell me true, what is the
• 11:26
Speaker 1: meaning of all this feasting? And who are these people?
• 11:29
Speaker 1: What is it all about? Have you some banquet? Or
• 11:33
Speaker 1: is there a wedding in the family? For no one
• 11:35
Speaker 1: seems to be bringing any provisions of his own. And
• 11:38
Speaker 1: the guests, how atrociously they are behaving, What riot they
• 11:42
Speaker 1: make over the whole house. It is enough to disgust
• 11:45
Speaker 1: any respectable person who comes near them, Sir, said Telemachus,
• 11:50
Speaker 1: as regards your question, So long as my father was here,
• 11:53
Speaker 1: it was well with us and with the house. But
• 11:56
Speaker 1: the gods, in their displeasure, have willed it otherwise, and
• 11:59
Speaker 1: have hidden him away more closely than mortal man was
• 12:02
Speaker 1: ever yet hidden. I could have borne it better even
• 12:05
Speaker 1: though he were dead, if he had fallen with his
• 12:07
Speaker 1: men before Troy, or had died with friends around him,
• 12:10
Speaker 1: when the days of his fighting were done. For then
• 12:14
Speaker 1: the Achaeans would have built a mound over his ashes,
• 12:17
Speaker 1: and I should myself have been heir to his renown.
• 12:20
Speaker 1: But now the storm winds have spirited him away. We
• 12:22
Speaker 1: know not whither. He is gone without leaving so much
• 12:25
Speaker 1: as a trace behind him, and I inherit nothing but dismay.
• 12:30
Speaker 1: Nor does the matter end simply with grief for the
• 12:33
Speaker 1: loss of my father. Heaven has laid sorrows upon me
• 12:36
Speaker 1: of yet another kind, for the chiefs from all our
• 12:39
Speaker 1: islands Dulychium same and the woodland island of Zacynthus, as
• 12:44
Speaker 1: also all the principal men of Ithacae itself are eating
• 12:47
Speaker 1: up my house under the pretext of paying their court
• 12:50
Speaker 1: to my mother, who will neither point blank say that
• 12:53
Speaker 1: she will not marry nor yet bring matters to an end.
• 12:57
Speaker 1: So they are making havoc of my estate, and before
• 13:00
Speaker 1: before long will do so also with myself. Is that
• 13:04
Speaker 1: so exclaimed Minerva, Then you do indeed want Ulysses home again.
• 13:09
Speaker 1: Give him his helmet, shield and a couple lances. And
• 13:12
Speaker 1: if he is the man he was when I first
• 13:14
Speaker 1: knew him in our house, drinking and making merry, he
• 13:18
Speaker 1: would soon lay his hands about these rascally suitors, were
• 13:21
Speaker 1: he to stand once more upon his own threshold. He
• 13:24
Speaker 1: was then coming from Ephira, where he had been to
• 13:27
Speaker 1: beg poison for his arrows from Ilas Son of murmeris
• 13:31
Speaker 1: Ilas feared thee ever living gods and would not give
• 13:34
Speaker 1: him any. But my father let him have some, for
• 13:36
Speaker 1: he was very fond of him. If Ulysses is the
• 13:39
Speaker 1: man he then was, these suitors will have a short
• 13:42
Speaker 1: shrift and a sorry wedding. But there it rests with
• 13:46
Speaker 1: Heaven to determine whether he is to return and take
• 13:49
Speaker 1: his revenge in his own house or no. I would, however,
• 13:53
Speaker 1: urge you to set about trying to get rid of
• 13:55
Speaker 1: these suitors at once. Take my advice. Call the Achaean
• 13:59
Speaker 1: heroes in a set tomorrow, lay your case before them,
• 14:02
Speaker 1: and call Heaven to bear you witness. Bid the suitors
• 14:06
Speaker 1: take themselves off, each to his own place. And if
• 14:09
Speaker 1: your mother's mind is set on marrying again, let her
• 14:12
Speaker 1: go back to her father, who will find her a
• 14:14
Speaker 1: husband and provide her with all the marriage gifts that
• 14:17
Speaker 1: so dear a daughter may expect. As for yourself, let
• 14:21
Speaker 1: me prevail upon you to take the best ship you
• 14:23
Speaker 1: can get with a crew of twenty men, and go
• 14:26
Speaker 1: in quest of your father, who has so long been missing.
• 14:30
Speaker 1: Some one may tell you something or and people often
• 14:33
Speaker 1: hear things in this way. Some Heaven sent message may
• 14:36
Speaker 1: direct you. First go to Pylos and ask Nestor. Thence
• 14:40
Speaker 1: go on to Sparta and visit Menelaeus, for he got
• 14:43
Speaker 1: home last of all the Achaeans. If you hear that
• 14:46
Speaker 1: your father is alive and on his way home, you
• 14:49
Speaker 1: can put up with the waist. These suitors will make
• 14:52
Speaker 1: for yet another twelve months. If, on the other hand,
• 14:55
Speaker 1: you hear of his death, come home at once, celebrate
• 14:58
Speaker 1: his funeral, rites with all dear pomp build a barrow
• 15:01
Speaker 1: to his memory, and make your mother merry again. Then,
• 15:05
Speaker 1: having done all this, think it well over in your mind.
• 15:09
Speaker 1: How by fair means or foul you may kill these
• 15:11
Speaker 1: suitors in your own house. You are too old to
• 15:14
Speaker 1: plead infancy any longer. Have you not heard how people
• 15:18
Speaker 1: are singing? Or rest these praises for having killed his
• 15:21
Speaker 1: father's murderer, Egisthus, you are a fine, smart looking fellow.
• 15:26
Speaker 1: Show your metal then, and make yourself a name and story. Now, however,
• 15:30
Speaker 1: I must go back to my ship and to my crew,
• 15:33
Speaker 1: who will be impatient if I keep them waiting longer.
• 15:37
Speaker 1: Think the matter over for yourself, and remember what I
• 15:40
Speaker 1: have said to you, sir, answered Telemachus, it has been
• 15:45
Speaker 1: very kind of you to talk to me in this way,
• 15:47
Speaker 1: as though I were your own son, and I will
• 15:49
Speaker 1: do all that you tell me. I know you want
• 15:52
Speaker 1: to be getting on with your voyage, but stay a
• 15:54
Speaker 1: little longer till you have taken a bath and refreshed yourself.
• 15:57
Speaker 1: I will then give you a present, and you shall
• 16:00
Speaker 1: go on your way rejoicing. I will give you one
• 16:02
Speaker 1: of great beauty and value, a keepsake such as only
• 16:06
Speaker 1: dear friends give to one another. Minerva answered, do not
• 16:10
Speaker 1: try and keep me, for I would be on my
• 16:12
Speaker 1: way at once. As for any present, you may be
• 16:15
Speaker 1: disposed to make me keep it till I come again,
• 16:18
Speaker 1: and I will take it home with me. You shall
• 16:20
Speaker 1: give me a very good one, and I will give
• 16:22
Speaker 1: you one of no less value in return. With these words,
• 16:27
Speaker 1: she flew away like a bird into the air. But
• 16:30
Speaker 1: she had given to Lemachus courage and had made him
• 16:33
Speaker 1: think more than ever about his father. He felt the change,
• 16:36
Speaker 1: wondered at it, and knew that the stranger had been
• 16:39
Speaker 1: a god. So he went straight to where the suitors
• 16:41
Speaker 1: were sitting. Phymeus was still singing, and his hearers sat
• 16:47
Speaker 1: rapt in silence as he told the sad tale of
• 16:49
Speaker 1: the return from Troy and the ills Minerva had laid
• 16:52
Speaker 1: upon the Accayans. Penelope, daughter of Vicarius, heard his song
• 16:58
Speaker 1: from her room upstairs, and came down by the great staircase,
• 17:01
Speaker 1: not alone, but attended by two of her handmaids. When
• 17:06
Speaker 1: she reached the suitors, she stood by one of the
• 17:08
Speaker 1: bearing posts that supported the roof of the cloisters, with
• 17:11
Speaker 1: a staid maiden on either side of her. She held
• 17:14
Speaker 1: a veil moreover before her face and was weeping bitterly.
• 17:18
Speaker 1: Phineas she cried, you know many another feat of gods
• 17:22
Speaker 1: and heroes, such as poets love to celebrate. Sing the
• 17:25
Speaker 1: suitors some one of these, and let them drink their
• 17:28
Speaker 1: wine in silence. But cease this sad tale, for it
• 17:32
Speaker 1: breaks my sorrowful heart and reminds me of my lost husband,
• 17:36
Speaker 1: whom I mourn ever without ceasing, and whose name was
• 17:39
Speaker 1: great over all Hellas and middle Argos. Mother answered Telemachus,
• 17:46
Speaker 1: let the bards sing what he has a mind to.
• 17:48
Speaker 1: Bards do not make the ills they sing of. It
• 17:51
Speaker 1: is Jove, not they, who makes them, and who sends
• 17:54
Speaker 1: weal or woe upon mankind according to his own good pleasure.
• 17:57
Speaker 1: This fellow. Means no harm by singing the ill fated
• 18:00
Speaker 1: return of the Dnanes, for people always applaud the latest
• 18:04
Speaker 1: songs most warmly. Make up your mind to it and
• 18:07
Speaker 1: bear it. Ulysses is not the only man who never
• 18:10
Speaker 1: came back from Troy, but many another went down as
• 18:13
Speaker 1: well as he. Go. Then within the house, and busy
• 18:16
Speaker 1: yourself with your daily duties, your loom, your distaff, and
• 18:19
Speaker 1: the ordering of your servants. For speech is man's matter,
• 18:23
Speaker 1: and mine above all others, for it is I who
• 18:26
Speaker 1: am master. Here she went, wandering back into the house
• 18:30
Speaker 1: and laid her son, saying in her heart. Then going
• 18:34
Speaker 1: upstairs with her handmaids into her room, she mourned her
• 18:38
Speaker 1: dear husband till minervs shed sweet sleep over her eyes.
• 18:41
Speaker 1: But the suitors were clamorous throughout the covered cloisters, and
• 18:45
Speaker 1: prayed each one that he might be her bedfellow. Then
• 18:48
Speaker 1: Telemachus spoke shameless, He cried and insolent suitors, Let us
• 18:53
Speaker 1: feast at our pleasure now, and let there be no brawling.
• 18:57
Speaker 1: For it is a rare thing to hear a man
• 18:58
Speaker 1: with such a divine voice as Phemeus has. But in
• 19:01
Speaker 1: the morning meet me in full assembly, that I may
• 19:04
Speaker 1: give you formal notice to depart and feast at one
• 19:07
Speaker 1: another's houses, turn and turn about at your own cost. If,
• 19:11
Speaker 1: on the other hand, you choose to persist in sponging
• 19:14
Speaker 1: upon one man, Heaven help me. But Jove shall reckon
• 19:17
Speaker 1: with you in full, and when you fall in my
• 19:19
Speaker 1: father's house, there shall be no man to avenge you.
• 19:23
Speaker 1: The suitors bit their lips as they heard him, and
• 19:26
Speaker 1: marveled at the boldness of his speech. Then, Antinous, son
• 19:31
Speaker 1: of you pay feasts, said the gods seem to have
• 19:34
Speaker 1: given you lessons in bluster and tall talking. May Jove
• 19:37
Speaker 1: never grant you to be chief in Ithaca as your
• 19:40
Speaker 1: father was before you, Telemachus answered, Antinous, do not chide
• 19:45
Speaker 1: with me, But God willing, I will be chief too
• 19:48
Speaker 1: if I can. Is this the worst fate you can
• 19:51
Speaker 1: think of? For me? It is no bad thing to
• 19:53
Speaker 1: be a chief, for it brings both riches and honor. Still,
• 19:57
Speaker 1: now that Ulysses is dead, there are many any great
• 20:00
Speaker 1: men in Ithaca, both old and young, and some other
• 20:03
Speaker 1: may take the lead among them. Nevertheless, I will be
• 20:06
Speaker 1: chief in my own house, and I will rule those
• 20:09
Speaker 1: whom Ulysses has won. For me. Then, Eurymicus, son of Polybus, answered,
• 20:15
Speaker 1: it rests with Heaven to decide who shall be chief
• 20:18
Speaker 1: among us. But you shall be master in your own
• 20:20
Speaker 1: house and under your own possessions. No one while there
• 20:24
Speaker 1: is a man in Ithaca, shall do you violence and
• 20:26
Speaker 1: rob you. And now, my good fellow, I want to
• 20:30
Speaker 1: know about this stranger. What country does he come from,
• 20:33
Speaker 1: of what family is he? And where is his estate?
• 20:36
Speaker 1: Has he brought you news about the return of your father?
• 20:39
Speaker 1: Or was he on business of his own? He seemed
• 20:42
Speaker 1: a well to do man, but he hurried off so
• 20:45
Speaker 1: suddenly that he was gone in a moment before we
• 20:47
Speaker 1: could get to know him. My father is dead and gone,
• 20:51
Speaker 1: answered Telemachus. And even if some rumor reaches me, I
• 20:54
Speaker 1: put no more faith in it. Now. My mother does,
• 20:57
Speaker 1: indeed sometimes send for a soothsayer and question him, but
• 21:01
Speaker 1: I give his prophecies no heed. As for the stranger,
• 21:04
Speaker 1: he was Mentes, son of Anchylus, chief of the Taphians,
• 21:08
Speaker 1: an old friend of my father's. But in his heart
• 21:12
Speaker 1: he knew that it had been the Goddess. The suitors
• 21:16
Speaker 1: then returned to their singing and dancing until the evening,
• 21:19
Speaker 1: but when night fell Upon their pleasuring, they went home
• 21:22
Speaker 1: to bed, each in his own abode. Telemachus room was
• 21:26
Speaker 1: higher up in a tower that looked on to the
• 21:28
Speaker 1: outer court. Hither then he hied, brooding and full of thought.
• 21:33
Speaker 1: A good old woman, Euryclia, daughter of Ops, the son
• 21:36
Speaker 1: of Pisinoor, went before him with a couple of blazing torches.
• 21:42
Speaker 1: Laertes had bought her with his own money when she
• 21:44
Speaker 1: was quite young. He gave the worth of twenty oxen
• 21:47
Speaker 1: for her, and showed as much respect to her in
• 21:50
Speaker 1: his household as he did to his own wedded wife.
• 21:52
Speaker 1: But he did not take her to his bed, for
• 21:55
Speaker 1: he feared his wife's resentment. She it was who now
• 21:58
Speaker 1: lighted Telemachus to his room, and she loved him better
• 22:01
Speaker 1: than any of the other women in the house did,
• 22:04
Speaker 1: for she had nursed him when he was a baby.
• 22:06
Speaker 1: He opened the door of his bedroom and sat down
• 22:08
Speaker 1: on the bed. As he took off his shirt, he
• 22:11
Speaker 1: gave it to the good old woman, who folded it
• 22:14
Speaker 1: tidily up and hung it for him over a peg
• 22:16
Speaker 1: by his bedside, after which she went out, pulled the
• 22:20
Speaker 1: door to by a silver catch, and drew the bolt
• 22:23
Speaker 1: home by means of the strap, but Telemachus, as he
• 22:26
Speaker 1: lay covered with a woolen fleece, kept thinking all night
• 22:29
Speaker 1: through of his intended voyage of the Council, that Minerva
• 22:32
Speaker 1: had given him end of Book one
