Speaker A: Welcome to unsigned 518 Weekend Spotlight for the weekend of November 22, 2024. Got a lot of great stuff coming up. Got music from Mama Doom. Got music from Little Saints, Manic Boys and Girls Club. Also going to play an unreleased actual special mix and master for this episode alone from Alec Lewis Group. It's from their upcoming album, so we're going to check in with that. So much shit happening. Anyway, without further ado, let's get started.

Speaker B: Weekend Spotlight the weekend. All right. The Weekend Spotlight the weekend. All right. Andy Skull in is such a good dude. The kind of guy that it's easy to talk to. Speaker A: So up first we have Eblock with special guest Alec Lewis group at Lark Hall. This is on Friday. The doors open at 7 o'clock. The show starts at 8. It is a Guthrie Bell production and the tickets are $17 in advance and $20 right at the door. And I do have a link to the tickets right in the show notes of this episode. So wherever you're listening, if you just go to the show notes, you can click right on the link and get your 17 tickets to go see Eblock with Alec Lewis Group at Lark hall on Friday. And what we're going to do right now is kind of cool. Alec sent this over. It's one of one of his new songs with the Alec Lewis Group. It is not released yet. Not only is it not released, he hasn't even sent it off to be mixed and mastered yet. This is just a mix and master that he put together specifically for this episode so that I could play it for you folks and you could get a sneak peek of the new Alec Lewis group song before you go check them out at Lark hall on Friday. So let's check it out right now. It's called Don't Cross Me. And again, you know, this is not the final mix and master. It is just something that Alec himself put together for this episode. So it could change. But you're getting the sneak peek. You're getting to hear it first. You should feel fucking stoked. This is Don't Cross Me, Alec Lewis group and it's here on Unsigned 518's Weekend Spotlight.

Speaker B: Out of class. You know my tail was wagging looking like an ass.
• 2:50
  Speaker C: Oh.
• 2:51
Speaker B: Cause some little shit was picking on me. I got crosswalk duty and I'm feeling.
• 2:58
  Speaker A: Me.
• 3:03
Speaker B: Bout to grab the vest so I can hit the street, Y'all driving by, about to lower, they spin.
• 3:13
  Speaker C: You.
• 3:14
Speaker B: Know the school zone sign don't matter much when the whole damn town is filled with punks. Don't cross me, don't cross me, don't cross me. You know I don't care if you miss the bus. I got a little stop sign and I'm feeling tough, so don't cross me. I'm about to get off duty at a half past eight when the same old bully picked a fight with my mate. So I was holding up traffic and laying it down, teaching him a lesson while I'm wearing the crown I was saying don't cross me, don't cross me, don't cross me. You know I don't care if you're late for work. You know we all got jobs and mine comes first so don't cross me. So I says to the guy you oh no, don't cross me, don't cross me. Oh no, don't cross me. I don't care if you're late for class I didn't come to fight but boy, since you asked, don't cross me.
• 5:33
Speaker A: Yeah, that is the latest from Alec Lewis Group. And when I say latest, I mean technically doesn't even exist yet. It is gonna be coming out later. He said it's, you know, being they gotta finish up production on it and then send it off to be final mix and master. And then we'll expect a new release from Alec Lewis Group sometime down the road. But again, you get to say, hey, I heard that song Don't Cross Me before it was even technically finished. So, Alec, I really appreciate you sending me that. That was really cool. And one of the reasons why I love doing this is I get to be privy to what's happening not only behind the scenes, but in front of the scenes. And I really, really dig it. So thank you, Alec. Alright, so up next is on Saturday at no Fun in Troy. And I'm actually extra psyched about this one because yours truly is opening the show with my band, Shortwave Radio Band. It is the Gozer album release party with Shortwave Radio Band and Mama Doom. Doors open at 7 o'clock, tickets are just $11 and I am extra excited. You know, I had Gozer on this show a couple of years ago, very early in the show and became, you know, close friends with them. We've played shows with them. Nick has been on both of my Halloween episodes, so he's been on two Halloween episodes of unsigned 518 and they invited to open up this show. And I'm very excited and I've, you know, obviously a fan of Gozer, but I've been digging into Mama Doom as well and I'm super psyched to play a show with them and to be able to meet them and hang out with them and mostly check out their set because their music really, really grabs me, so to speak. So what I'm going to do right now is even though it's a Gozer album release party, I'm going to play a Mama Doom song because I, you know, I've played Gozer on here. Everybody, everybody knows Gozer. And actually when. Side note, when I was up in Canada for the Gusapalooza Festival, I met a dude up there, I was talking to him and he was actually a fan of Gozer. And I made sure to like pull out like the, you know, Spotify. I'm like, these guys. And he's like, yeah, yeah, I love that. You know, like he mentioned like my design and songs and like so they, they've got international fans and I just ran into one in the wild. But anyway, enough of me talking. We're gonna hear Mama Doom. This song is called oh Lucifer and it's right here on unsigned 518's weekend spotlight.

Speaker C: Starts with a little light and it's.

  Speaker B: Burning and bur.

Speaker B: Alone but God won't last Cause I'm calling his name.

Speaker C: It doesn't matter where I go when I die Cuz I got him on my side, I got.
• 9:18
Speaker B: Time on my side.
• 9:28
  Speaker C: I'm having a.
• 9:29
Speaker B: Black match and nobody came I'm alone but that won't last Cause I'm calling his name.
• 10:10
Speaker C: No one knows what it's like to be unknown Sitting in my room doing but sacrifice says hello.
• 10:28
  Speaker B: When.
• 10:28
Speaker C: The Dark Lord comes I'll be know Finally I.
• 11:34
Speaker A: All right, great tune there. That is Mama Doom with O Lucifer. You can catch them with Shortwave Radio Band and Gozer at no Fun on Saturday for Gozer's album release party. Doors at 7:00 and the tickets are just $11. All right. Also on Saturday is happy hour with JB aka Dirty Moses at the 11. This is the official Talib Kweli pre show. Show starts at 6:00 and is totally free. And JB aka Dirty Moses has been, you know, on this show a couple times. I've gotten to know him and I think I've said it before, but now it's getting closer. But on Shortwave Radio Band's new album that we're working on currently with TJ Foster, we have a song where basically Shortwave Radio Band did the music and JB AKA Dirty Moses is going to be the vocalist on it. And he's. We, we don't even know what his part sounds like. We've sent him, you know, the beats per minute and the, the working demos and the stems so that he can get a feel for what it is. But I know it's getting closer and I am just so freaking excited to hear what he comes up with because he's not only one of my favorite hip hop artists in the 518, but he's like one of my favorite people. I, I really dig that dude. So I'm extra excited to be able to work with him and be on an album with him. But anyway, so go catch JB aka Dirty Moses at the 11. And the 11 is located at 351 Hudson Ave. In Albany and that is Saturday starting at 6:00. So right now what we're going to do is check in with the new segment on this show. A lot of, you know, AB the autocrat, he does the underscore music for unsigned 518. Matter of fact, it's what you're hearing right now is Formative Years, which is the instrumental version of formative years by A.B. the autocrat, which I kind of adopted as my official underscore music. But anyway, he also has a show called I Miss Beer and he reviews non alcoholic beer. And as many of you know, I'm six months free of the demon alcohol, so to speak. And I really appreciate attention being paid to those of us that choose not to drink alcohol, you know, and having the, the choice to have a delicious non alcoholic beer or a non alcoholic cocktail, I really dig that. So AB the Autocrats, also known as my friend Brendan, does the show I Miss Beer. And what we're going to do is on unsigned 518weekend spotlight, I'm going to run an episode every week. They're short, they're I think like 45 seconds a minute or so. But he takes a non alcoholic beer, he scores it, he, you know, rates the taste and then he slams it. You know, just like I have really been enjoying watching them on Instagram and I just wanted, wanted to get involved in that. So we're gonna run I Miss Beer every week on Unsigned518's Weekend Spotlight. And I guess without further ado, let's go right into it.
• 14:37
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 14:40
Speaker D: My name is Brendan, and I miss beer. And on the very first episode of the second season of I miss beer, we're going to be trying Anheuser Busch's premium oduls.
• 14:50
  Speaker B: All right.
• 14:50
Speaker D: Those new to the channel. There's four things we do every video. Sniff it, sip it, score it, then slam it. In season one, I reviewed odul's amber and it was terrible. I think this is going to be better, though. Doesn't smell as bad, that's for sure. Let's give it a sip. Much better than the amber. It's very light, crisp, one of the originals, one of the OGs, if not the OG N A beer. This is so much better than the Amber. I really think the amber is. Should have been probably less than a 5, 8, but this is much better. It's funny, most places when I go out, I don't see that they have this. Most places have Heineken, zero. Almost everywhere has that, but not this. And I think once upon a time, you would see this more, but not so much anymore. All right, overall verdict. I'm going to go six, eight. Let's slam it. My name is Brendan, and I miss beer.
• 15:38
Speaker A: Thank you, Brendan. And make sure that you go follow imissbeer on Instagram and check out the episodes on YouTube. It's really cool, really informative, and I. I personally didn't realize that there were so many options when it came to na beer. And thanks to Brendan, I now know. So right now we're gonna go to my friends up in the Bad music club, Jake and Mike. And they send every week a band you should know. And I send them every week, Andy's Rex, and they play it on their show. And this one, actually I'm familiar with the band because I caught this band at Gusapalooza and I also interviewed them and it'll be on an upcoming episode of Unsigned Unwind, which I promise will get going again very soon. I've just been so busy and that kind of has. Has fallen a little bit to the wayside. But I'll get my together. I still have episodes in the can. I just need to edit them and get them out. But Manic Boys and Girls club is one of the bands that I have on an upcoming episode of Unsigned Unwind and I really like their music. I really like them as people. And I think you're going to as well. And right now let's check in with Jake and Mike. Bad Music club. This is bands you should know.
• 16:56
Speaker E: The Manic Boys and Girls club has 590 monthly listeners and it's a sibling fronted indie pop rock outfit from Toronto.
• 17:03
Speaker A: Epic. Just fucking epic. I can't get enough of these guys.
• 17:07
Speaker E: Me neither, man. Their music is their escape from a life of heavy hands and it represents an escape for an any misfit looking to join the club.
• 17:15
Speaker B: Dude, her voice is just so soft.
• 17:16
Speaker A: And powerful at the same time. It's fantastic.
• 17:20
Speaker E: It really is beautiful. This music is big and you can tell it has a huge impact on those that it touches.
• 17:26
Speaker A: I'm already in one, but I want to join this club.
• 17:28
Speaker E: Hell yeah. Hell yeah. Their latest releases, Last Train, which came out August 23, 2024.
• 17:35
Speaker B: We can stay here and fight this lifelong war or disappear like our heroes did before. My guardian angel resigned a few years back. And things aren't quite the same when no one's got your back. We'll take the last train out tonight. We'll take the last train out tonight. This could be the last night of our lives. We'll take the last. We can find out what it means to be alive and break out of this great American life. We might not have it figured out before the credits roll. We might not have it figured out but best is yet to come. We'll take the last shade out tonight. We'll take the last train out tonight. This could be the last night of our lives. You'll take the last thing out tonight. We could burn away the photographs and leave behind our names. We could let go of insecurities. We could erase our DNA. I want to call a mirror sending me. Can we forgive the mess we made? Are we cursed? The blessed are left behind. What are we fighting for? We'll take the last straight out tonight. We'll take the last straight out tonight. This could be the last night of our lives. We'll take the last train out tonight. We'll take the last train out. We'll take the last train out tonight.
• 20:32
Speaker A: Last Train by the Manic Boys and Girls Club and make sure that you check them out, look them up on Spotify. Their music is so good. And again, they are just great human beings. I had a really, really wonderful time talking to them, watching them perform and I just, I really like them. I get a great vibe from them. So Manic Boys and Girls Club, go check them out. And right now what we're going to do is every month for Metroland, TJ Foster puts together what, what he calls hot singles in your area. And it's basically just like kind of what it sounds like, but not what it sounds like. It's all the singles that are released by local musicians in the 518. And he compiles them, he finds them, people send them to them. So if you are in a band or a musician and you have music coming out, make sure that you let T.J. foster know about it. He's not hard to find. He's, you know, the front man for Erie. He's T.J. foster of Metroland. You can find him on social, send him a message, send him an email and get your music to him and he will add it to the Metroland hot singles in your area that comes out every month. And so far there's been two months that we've done and after he puts it together and puts the article together, he sends it to me. And then I created the official Metroland now hot singles in your area playlist on Spotify so you can go check out the latest from 518 musicians. And what I'm going to do is every week on the Weekend Spotlight, I'm going to reach in to the Metroland now hot singles in your area playlist and I'm just going to pick a song that I like and I'm going to play it and what I'm going to do right now, this is a song from Little Saints. This one's called Harvest. And I really dig Little Saints. They're like Natalie and Andy. I've gotten to know a little bit and I again, you know, I know I've said it with other bands on this episode, but they're great people and to me, that enhances the music. If you're listening to music that you really enjoy and you're like, I know that this music came from a genuine person, compassion person, a great human. For me, anyway, it's just such an enhancer. And I really enjoy listening to Little Saints and I really enjoy that it comes from great human beings. So let's check out Harvest Little Saints here on unsigned 518weekend spotlight.
• 23:11
Speaker C: No ideas, no more listening to reason Brand new boons in a bountiful season you come around and start picking and preening when did I become the garden you pull from nothing to plant Only trying to pick some of mine.
• 23:47
  Speaker B: The.
• 23:47
Speaker C: Sun carry its rays upon me I'm rooted, dear but this is where I'll be I can't reach all its energy Lose myself accidentally out of my way I have taken all of my don't wait till it's suffocated the leaves are yellow and they're turning brown Nothing stays, nothing's always around Too old the web we read will keep us connected Learn is to end dangers attempted us it takes more than being alone to gather the light and take all you can to grow the sun car upon me I'm rooted deep with the shades where I'll be I can't reach all attention Use myself accidentally out of my way I have taken all of my time.
• 25:38
  Speaker B: Love.
• 25:45
  Speaker C: Don'T wait till it's suffocating.
• 25:54
  Speaker B: The.
• 25:54
Speaker C: Harshest weather in September makes the heartiest Now I can see the sun for myself I'm rooted deep but that's not where I want to be Pick me up and take me out Then you can feed on the energy ahead and be gone through the season and I've made it through the hardest harvest I'll.
• 27:12
Speaker A: Ever do what a great song. Harvest Little saints here on unsigned 518weekend spotlight. And that is it for me. Make sure you get out support live music. If you need something to do, check out the Metroland what's happening. I believe we call it that on the. On the page it's the concert calendar. And, you know, pick up your physical copy. Hang on to that. That's always going to be a great resource for what's going on. And there's, you know, more and more places are carrying them and we've got a distribution list on the website. So if you want to find a place that's carrying them, you can go to themetroland.com and you can find out, you know, what. What venues and places are carrying them so that you can pick up a copy, a physical copy of the paper. And again, you know, we really, truly appreciate it. We're gonna make a promise to grow. I am in the process of. Hopefully some more podcasts are gonna come out of Metroland. I've been talking to some people on the staff that are full of ideas and gonna put podcasts together. So, you know, there's going to be more podcasts, more writers, more photographers. You know, we've got art scene coverage, we've got RM Engelhardt with poetry. We're just growing and expanding and everything's going really well. And with your feedback and, you know, the community's feedback, I think we'll pull it off. We're really trying and we're doing it with your help and trying to give you. You what you want as well. So Metroland, that's my Metroland spiel, I guess. Yeah, that is. That is it for me.
