- Lucas: Luna, welcome back. Ready for another tiny Amharic lesson? Luna: Always, Lucas. I've been practicing 'how much' from last time. ስንት ነው? I used it at the market yesterday. Lucas: Nice! That's exactly where today's phrase comes in. When you ask ስንት ነው? you're asking 'how much.' But what if you need to find something? Like 'Where is the market?' Luna: Oh, right. I'd need to ask 'where,' not 'how much.' That's a good one. Lucas: Exactly. The word for 'where' in Amharic is የት. Say it with me: የት. Luna: የት. Lucas: Good. And to ask 'where is something?' you say የት ነው? So 'Where is the market?' is ገበያው የት ነው? Luna: ገበያው የት ነው? Lucas: Perfect. ገበያ is 'market,' and we add ው to mean 'the market.' So ገበያው means 'the market.' Luna: So ገበያው የት ነው? means 'Where is the market?' Lucas: Exactly. Let's try another. 'Where is the hotel?' is ሆቴሉ የት ነው? Luna: ሆቴሉ የት ነው? Lucas: Great. And 'Where is the library?' — ቤተ መጻሕፍቱ የት ነው? Luna: ቤተ መጻሕፍቱ የት ነው? That's a mouthful. Lucas: It is. Take it slow: ቤተ-መ-ጻሕፍ-ቱ. Luna: ቤተ መጻሕፍቱ. Okay, I think I've got it. Lucas: Let's do one more: 'Where is the shop?' — ሱቁ የት ነው? Luna: ሱቁ የት ነው? That one's easy – ሱቅ is 'shop.' Lucas: Yes. And with ዉ it becomes ሱቁ, 'the shop.' So you're ready to ask for locations. Let's practice a mini conversation. Luna: Okay, I'll try. You ask me a question. Lucas: ሆቴሉ የት ነው? Luna: Hmm... I don't know the answer. But if I were asking, I'd say ሆቴሉ የት ነው? Lucas: Right. You don't need to answer, just ask. So in a real situation, you'd approach someone and say ሆቴሉ የት ነው? Luna: And they'd probably point me in the right direction. That's super useful. Lucas: It is.
