- 2:23up the cover of this book. Y'all just say, let's just say please
- 2:29club. That's the vibe that I get from this book. So I am
- 2:34going to bring author Tosha Rights, y'all, let's go ahead and get into
- 2:39this. Come on up, Girley, come on up, Hey, what's
- 2:44going on? I am good? That is the vibe when I look at
- 2:49your cover, I at likely think please club girl. That was the whole
- 2:53mood of that book. I was trying to go for that. I was
- 2:57like, look, okay, before we dive into that, tell us a
- 3:04little bit about yourself. Well, I am an author. My name is
- 3:08Tasha Writes, and I have been an author since twenty twenty two. If
- 3:13you're talking about published, I've been writing for a while. I have probably
- 3:19been writing since I was like twenty three, but it was in the poetry
- 3:22is what I was writing before, and so you know, I just kind
- 3:25of wrote just to be writing a little bit here and there. And it
- 3:29was my husband who said, you know, what you should write, like
- 3:31it's really right, and I'm like, okay, yeah, you know,
- 3:35I was just kind of playing it off because I didn't really think that I
- 3:38was, you know, even worthy of even like showing people my work.
- 3:42So I used to write poems just around the house, you know, stuff
- 3:46about him and this, just little little stuff. And then I actually put
- 3:50Penn in the pad and was like, you know what, I'm gonna do
- 3:52a story cause I have so much going on in as head of mine.
- 3:55I was like, well, let me go ahead and put this story together.
- 3:58So I just wrote, you know, maybe about a quarter of a
- 4:00chapter, and then I put the book down. Then he ain't pick it
- 4:04back up, and then all of a sudden, twenty twenty two, well
- 4:10twenty twenty one, I picked the book back up again because my husband had
- 4:13been hounding me the whole time. So imagine I was twenty three, I'm
- 4:18forty six. Now. That happened when I was like forty five, forty
- 4:23four, forty five, So it took that long to actually write a full
- 4:26book. And so I, cause I kept putting it off, I'm like,
- 4:29yeah, I'm gonna get to it to it. So then finally I
- 4:31was like, you know what I'm gonna do with this time? So I
- 4:32went and read through it and finally I was like, you know what,
- 4:35I'm about to finish this and I was real determined. So I did it,
- 4:40and before I knew it, I had a published book. So that's
- 4:44exactly how that happened. So Black Diamond is acting the same question I was
- 4:49going to ask you, like, oh, was it to go from poetry
- 4:54because you know it was a couple of lines to a full fledged novel art.
- 5:00Was that well? It really wasn't that hard. I thought it would
- 5:03be a challenge for me because I'm thinking, you know I'm gonna do this.
- 5:06Forem I'm like, I never wrote a book. I and to tell
- 5:10you the truth, I've never really fully read an urban book. So I
- 5:13didn't even know the first thing about it. And all I kept thinking was
- 5:16I don't know if anybody would even read this book, Like that was my
- 5:20first thought. I have read some pieces of your book, and you're telling
- 5:28me you have never read a full urban novel. Not then when I did
- 5:34my first book, I never read an urban fiction novel ever, because I
- 5:39didn't even know they existed. Now I know I lived under a rock,
- 5:44and I know everybody in Urban Road was like, what are you serious?
- 5:46And I'm hearing all these different type of books now, and I'm like,
- 5:50yeah, I never read that, and so I was like way behind when
- 5:56it comes to urban fiction. So please excuse my not my unknowledgeable self,
- 6:01because I didn't know. I really truly didn't know because I wasn't a reader.
- 6:05I was just more, you know, just here, here and there.
- 6:10I was like, I'm not reading a book like I wants to read
- 6:13a book, because I thought all the books were just you know, boring,
- 6:16until I finally actually read an urban fiction book and I was like,
- 6:19oh my god, where have I been. And everybody's like, oh,
- 6:24you got to read this and this, and I'm just getting I'm getting right
- 6:27now, given overwhelmed with books. So you just heard my whole books.
- 6:36I am my friend book. I'm so sorry. And now I tell that
- 6:43story and everybody goes, are you serious? And I'm like yes, And
- 6:46so unfortunately that was who I was. And I was like, because I
- 6:50think school did that to me more of you know, giving all these books
- 6:55that just weren't interesting, like they would have us read all these books.
- 6:58And I'm like, I'm like, I don't want to read about that.
- 7:00I don't want to read about that. Like it wasn't it just wasn't nothing
- 7:03that grabbed me. But what I will say urban fiction books, I absolutely
- 7:10love all of their books. Oh my god. When I first read my
- 7:14first one, I was like, oh my god, where about one?
- 7:20Yeah. The first one I ever read was by my mentor. When I
- 7:26first published my book, I went to him to actually get tips on a
- 7:29lot of things about how to publish my book. And so I was like,
- 7:32well, you know what, while I'm doing this, I need to
- 7:34read one of his books because he's probably thinking like, okay, so you
- 7:39know, you know what type of book you were doing, and he's asking
- 7:43this question. I'm thinking like, yeah, I think I know what type
- 7:45of journal this is. I don't know. I'm just writing this book.
- 7:48And so I said, well, let me read this book. So the
- 7:50book I read was Crybaby by author King Benjamin oh Book. And I read
- 7:59that book that I was like, I got so into it and I was
- 8:01like, oh my god, where have I been. I'm like, I'm
- 8:05like, he actually kind of write. He writes just like I do,
- 8:09be right, I almost to see stuff I do. So I was all
- 8:11excited. I'm thinking, this is the book that I had in the library
- 8:16one time. Check make sure, because I don't have no problem like going
- 8:22on Google and looking at this. But let me ask you another question.
- 8:24So not to ask, but I'm gonna I'm a comment on something you said
- 8:28about being in high school. And really I work at a public library and
- 8:35have this from ninety Oh I never read this one before. Oh wow,
- 8:41boy, that stopped my whole train of thought. Let me go ahead and
- 8:45add that to my good reason read this. I got the author. I
- 8:52have a lot of students. They have to read Tears of the Sun Prisoner
- 8:58ten fifty four, and it's not books that they want to read. So
- 9:01when they come back to the library, I see the parents bringing the babies.
- 9:07Oh, let's get the baby some books. But the teenagers and the
- 9:09young adults and the parents won't get books. So literally what you're talking about,
- 9:15I have to take and this is what I call it my specialty is
- 9:20take book the movie. So I have one girl, One little girl was
- 9:24with her mom and her mom said, oh, I can't wait to look
- 9:26at Power on TV. This mean, yeah, you got a whole nother
- 9:28week to look at the episode. She's like, I just wish I had
- 9:31something that could get me through the week. Oh, I got you,
- 9:35I said, you want to she said, I don't read a book.
- 9:37She came back three weeks later, it was like, you got any more.
- 9:43I got you. So I totally understand where you're coming from. Bridge
- 9:48between high school and we call it the young adult years. It's lost because
- 9:56you're required to read all this fair and high full fift. I still don't
- 10:03understand what I was supposed to learn from that book, but I read it.
- 10:07Yeah, you know, I was supposed to learn, but I read
- 10:11it. You know. But your poetry, let's talk about that before we
- 10:20get to this strange addiction. Okay, what was your poetry like, Because
- 10:24if I'm if your poetry is anything like some of these scenes, you got
- 10:30a streamed addiction, I'm gonna need you to go ahead and publish that too.
- 10:33Well, glad you said that, because I am a hopeless romantic that's
- 10:41what you're gonna get from me. And my poetry is hopeless romantic poetry.
- 10:45So yes, I am a love poet, So yes, you are going
- 10:48to get that from me. And that is how my poems are. I
- 10:52wrote a poem about my husband and he absolutely loved it. And so that's
- 10:58where it just went from me. And to tell the story about how that
- 11:01I even transpired to me being I didn't even know I could write like that.
- 11:05It took me watching Love Jones to actually realize that I could write poetry
- 11:11and write books. So when I sat there and it was actually it was
- 11:16the Rens Tates of Poem that I sat there, and I said, when
- 11:20I heard his poem, I said, I think I can do that,
- 11:22and I sort of put in the path and I was like, I was
- 11:26surprised myself. I said, ooh, this is good. So yes,
- 11:33and to let you know, I am planning to write a poetry book and
- 11:37that will come here in the next couple of years, so you will see
- 11:41poems from me. And that was a plan of mine all the beginning of
- 11:43this, because I was like, if the book thing don't work, I'm
- 11:46definitely gonna write poetry. So it's one of those things. Poetry is people's
- 11:54I think anybody who reads, or anybody who would like to read, if
- 11:58they're not avid readers, I tell him to start off with some poetry in
- 12:01the journal in your life because the poetry, poetry is for everybody. Oh
- 12:05yes, the right thing. And I was surprised to find out there's a
- 12:09lot of authors who write poetry, and I said, okay, you know
- 12:13that. I asked a few of them. I'm like, okay, is
- 12:16popular, Yes, this streets addiction? Okay? What with? How?
- 12:28Why? Everything? Like? What? That one was a very to tell
- 12:37you truth, That book came off so easily for me. I just I
- 12:41pictured, I already had the main character. I already knew Curves was going
- 12:48to be the main character in this book. And the concept I have for
- 12:52her was she was a stripper, but she didn't want to be one for
- 12:56a long time. She had bigger things going and I wanted to kind of,
- 13:00you know, kind of leave away with that because a lot of people
- 13:03they hear the word stripper or dancer and they thinking like, Okay, she
- 13:05don't have nothing going on. She ain't trying to do nothing. But Curves
- 13:09had a whole different angle with her. She even though she had the body
- 13:13for it, it just wasn't something that she had that the mind. And
- 13:20so it just came off easily. I just thought, like her, I
- 13:24said, well, if I was her and she wanted to just do photography
- 13:28and film, which is still kind of along the same lines of what she
- 13:33did as a career. What would she do? How would this work when
- 13:35she went to college? How was she? And it just flowed And I
- 13:41already knew I was gonna put the professor there. Ron was gonna be the
- 13:45professor, and that was how that was gonna go. I already had I
- 13:50had Rod's character what I made curves, so I knew they were gonna buy
- 13:56just off of. And I wanted to also do I love Prince. Prince
- 14:01is my favorite entertainer of all times. Me and him have to share the
- 14:05same birthday, so I wanted to do it attribute to him as well.
- 14:11So when I did these characters, I wanted him to be very sexy.
- 14:13I wanted did the whole everything to be spiceful. I wanted them to have
- 14:18I wanted them to all have some type of Prince field to him. And
- 14:24so that was the whole stream of the book. Okay, so you've seen
- 14:28you want everybody to have a Prince Steve filter or filter. How did the
- 14:35professor? What prince aspect did you give him? I gave him Prince's name
- 14:41prince name is Roger Prince Roger Nelson, so I kind of flipped it a
- 14:46little bit and made him Roderick Nelson. And so that was how that came
- 14:50about. So, yes, if you noticed, the names in these books
- 14:58are kind of interesting, to say the least, but that's where Rod's name
- 15:05came from. It was first Roger Nelson, so I said, we're gonna
- 15:07call him Roderick Nelson and then just give him ride as a nickname and then
- 15:11kind of make it sound sexial a little bit, you know, kind of
- 15:16like a why this book was? I saw it in the category of urban,
- 15:26and I said, why is this book in urban? The only thing
- 15:30urban in this book is the people this book needs to be in. Do
- 15:33not have this book on your phone or tablet when your child can read?
- 15:41Yes, that was the whole aim of that book was, I'm about to
- 15:45see how far I could go with this book, and that's exactly how I
- 15:48wanted to do with Since your husband expired inspired you, what did he say
- 15:54when he read the book? Oh, he loved the book. He was
- 15:56like, Okay, I see, I see what's there you're going with this.
- 16:03So he loved the book. He's read it too, and he's like,
- 16:06Okay, when you said I started off writing poetry, I'm thinking in
- 16:11my back of the head trees, you remember some of the stuff that went
- 16:15on in this book. And she told me she started off of poetry,
- 16:19and I was in my early twenties. I was in college too, So
- 16:22that should tell you a whole lot about this book. We're gonna take a
- 16:30break real quick. We're gonna come back, and you know, my second
- 16:36half had some fun questions for you know, some prince princes in this but
- 16:41we're gonna take We're gonna come back and have some more fun. Come back,
- 16:45you guys. Turn off the legs, the candle. Tonight, a
- 17:15man, a merchant. Let's take a shower, shower together. I was
- 17:32abuded. You was somew wealthy, and say, Jay, turn off.
- 17:57Come girl, I want to hear of you. What special treat you're so
- 18:07sweet? Turn Yeah, I see that, and I see a point already
- 18:17in your hate, a big old point. She about to spend the night.
- 18:29We have prince and we have love Jones. That paid a factor into
- 18:37your book, So curves herves who would play her in the movie Strange Addiction?
- 18:48Well, the book is strong Edition Strong. That's okay, But I
- 18:52don't know, probably between now Cardi B or maybe Minaj. I don't know
- 19:00what their acting skills are like, but they definitely fit the part you know
- 19:04who. I was thinking Annown since you went to the Rap Rap World,
- 19:10I was thinking Remy, mom. Oh, yes, Remy could play even
- 19:14Trina. I would even take Trina Oo. I can't see Trina, and
- 19:22it probably would be Trina only because the part two in this series has a
- 19:27lot to do with my Aba, so would be able to play. Did
- 19:33you say part two? Oh? Yeah, there is a part two to
- 19:37this It's published. Part two of this series is on Amazon. What a
- 19:41name of part two is it? We have a lot of couples in this
- 19:47book now, So yeah, you you had a And that's one thing I
- 19:51did like is that you had a lot of characters flowing in and out and
- 19:53remind me I was getting even though these ladies are much more sophisticated, I
- 20:00was getting a sister's vibe with all the characters coming in and out. So
- 20:04if you look at that show, they got a route. I don't even
- 20:07know how Tyler, Perry and everybody. Every time you look between sisters and
- 20:12all the queens men. It is a rotation of characters. I like that
- 20:18because there's always that wow factor that oh my god, and what about to
- 20:22do with you? And why are you in this book? Well you can
- 20:26blame that on me being a Gemini, but a lot of personalities going on
- 20:32there once. So sometimes I'm switching and taking people out, putting people in.
- 20:36Somebody's talking to me at that time, and that's just basically what happens.
- 20:40It's like, Okay, let me go into this character a little bit
- 20:42more because we need to know a little bit more. I need to let
- 20:45them see a little bit more of this. So that's the Gemini and me.
- 20:51I know a lot of authors they can't handle it. I know the
- 20:55storylines get confusing, but you kept this smooth, you kept it going.
- 21:00So what is your secret? How do you do that? I visualize this
- 21:07when I do these books, and i'm writing. Before I put in the
- 21:10pad, I'm already at the end of the story in my head, so
- 21:14i know exactly how I wanted to go. So by the time I'm putting
- 21:18in the pad, I'm just flowing in my mind on how what's next,
- 21:22What's happening next, What's happening next? And I know a lot of people
- 21:23can't do it because I'm a panc writer. So i haven't even did an
- 21:27outline or anything. I'm in the character at that moment. I'm I consider
- 21:32myself more like a I'm a pancer. But at the same time, I'm
- 21:36in the I'm in curve shoes while I'm writing. Wow. So when I'm
- 21:40writing, I'm cursed. So as you know, i'm writing, I'm cursed.
- 21:45I'm whoever it is that moment. I'm them at that moment. And
- 21:48so that's why you're getting those type of feelies from the book, because I'm
- 21:53actually ride, I'm actually d I'm actually moist. I'm in the bodies of
- 21:59them and they're talking through me, and I'm like and that's basically how it
- 22:02goes. One of my favorite authors, her name is mel Dude. She
- 22:07says that she's like man Trees. They just be talking to me and she's
- 22:11like, I literally stop what I do when I start writing. I do
- 22:14too. I need you another one of mine. He's now in Florida at
- 22:19an advent. Kareem Williams he does it too. He's like man Trees.
- 22:25And I'll just be writing stove and I'm like, I just don't understand how
- 22:27y'all keep I could barely understand conversations. Sometimes I'd be telling you what you
- 22:33say again. So for y'all to keep all these different individuals and keep them
- 22:38in line and then produce this wonderful work, thank you. So I told
- 22:45you my friend questions. I gave you what you noticed that when I sent
- 22:48you a questions, they didn't seen you these one. There we go.
- 22:52Who would direct your book if it was turned into a film, Now,
- 23:00that is an interesting question. I don't know. I really don't know whoever
- 23:07it is. They got to be able to work with me, though,
- 23:08because I gotta have that book got to be it has to be next to
- 23:12the book as far as the movie is concerned. So I have no idea
- 23:15who I will pick as a director. I really don't. I just know
- 23:19they have to be workable. And when I say them, scenes got to
- 23:22be just like it's got to be like the book. Okay, I'm not
- 23:26skipping rod scene with curves when they first meet. That's not happening. That's
- 23:30I want all the films. Okay. Somebody said Henson that I would do.
- 23:45Okay, what's his name? What's his name? He's a character,
- 23:52he's not a director. Uncle. What's the man from the Valley dunkle Clipper?
- 24:06Yes, I can really see here. That would be good, that
- 24:14would be spicy. Yes, somebody said it's fifty cents. I can work
- 24:22with fifty. I have a few other books that I have published and I
- 24:25would love to work with. Yes, tell us about one of your other
- 24:29your other books. What else you're got going on? Well, I have
- 24:32I have a total of nine published books on Amazon. So I have a
- 24:37book series as a ten book series going on right now, and it's a
- 24:41hood hood, urban hood fiction book. And I'm dropping another one. It's
- 24:45dropping the parts. I think I'm on book six of that series next month.
- 24:48I'll be dropping out month. And it's called The Cold Keepers and it's
- 24:52about a set of five guys. They are from the whole, they're coming
- 24:56of age. And this book that I'm getting ready released, they were grown
- 25:02and violent and sexy and yes, giving me this scene look like the first
- 25:11time I saw his name when I was working, I was working an event
- 25:17for the library and they said, okay, Zene is coming up. I'm
- 25:21thinking I'm about to look at some dime diva walking around the letters. And
- 25:26when she came up, I said, y'all, she looked like a soccer
- 25:27mom. I said, what would she be doing? And me stereotyping?
- 25:36And I'm so sorry, Zane, and you apologize. I was thinking,
- 25:40she got to have my four or five kids and her daughter is not even
- 25:45allowed to read her work when she was younger. I was like, what
- 25:48kind of house mom doing? Surprise? Surprise, because when I tell people
- 25:59what I'm reading, they look at me like and still. I mean,
- 26:07I was even afraid to tell. I had a director that came to the
- 26:10library and she was like, what are you reading? I said, please,
- 26:14don't ask me that. Right now I'm in the children's section trying to
- 26:18find me. Do not ask me this question. She said, Now,
- 26:22never be afraid of what you're reading. This is me, all right,
- 26:26you asked for it. What you're reading. The book at that time was
- 26:30called choke me, spiked me, pull my hair. She said, oh,
- 26:33okay, it's good, I'm looking at you. I would never see
- 26:44a nine book series, you go, girl, with the next one dropping
- 26:51next month. Next month, that'll be book six, So you know you
- 26:55gotta, you know, send me in for me. She's like, tell
- 26:59my people, yes, sure, I sure will, but yeah, I've
- 27:04been working us. I love writing. I think that's one of the things
- 27:08that during that gap period that I had that I didn't publish anything. Now
- 27:14I wish I would have wrote more then, because oh my gosh. So
