- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to College Football Addiction. We are presented by PrizePix.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Talk more about them later. But Joe DeLeon on with
- 0:06Speaker 1: us today. Rufino and Joe's show. Dude, Hack City, I've
- 0:09Speaker 1: seen you guys, the FCS stuff. Listen, I know that
- 0:12Speaker 1: we're excited football's back, but the FCS stuff last week
- 0:14Speaker 1: was phenomenal. Was it William & Mary and just everything
- 0:17Speaker 1: that went on on Thursday and Friday?
- 0:19Speaker 2: But we actually do get.
- 0:21Speaker 1: A full slate of FBS football this week, and I
- 0:24Speaker 1: could not be more excited. Notre Dame will play on Sunday.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Do you like the.
- 0:29Speaker 2: The non Saturday games. I don't mind.
- 0:32Speaker 3: I like it for, for week, uh, for week one.
- 0:36Speaker 3: I kept thinking about this the whole week because last
- 0:39Speaker 3: year I went to Notre Dame Miami and it was
- 0:42Speaker 3: perfect as a standalone game that like, that was awesome.
- 0:45Speaker 3: And watching South Carolina, Virginia tech before that still was
- 0:49Speaker 3: a competitive enough of a game that was interesting to
- 0:52Speaker 3: watch as the appetizer before I went to the game. Um,
- 0:55Speaker 3: And then I'm thinking about this year, all that intensity
- 0:58Speaker 3: for that matchup and getting to be there in that stadium.
- 1:02Speaker 3: I don't have that same vibe for Wisconsin versus Notre Dame.
- 1:06Speaker 3: I wish and I miss the years where the Sunday
- 1:09Speaker 3: games were always, hey, you got a standalone. One standalone
- 1:13Speaker 3: matchup's amazing. The other one's like a solid game with
- 1:15Speaker 3: some smaller brands in the big conference. But it's at Lambeau.
- 1:19Speaker 3: It'll get a lot of eyes, but I don't expect
- 1:22Speaker 3: that this game will be very close.
- 1:24Speaker 1: The yeah, man, we had Florida state and LSU back-to-back
- 1:27Speaker 1: years on a Sunday. Miami Notre Dame was a phenomenal one.
- 1:32Speaker 1: But yeah, like the matchups this year, Louisville Ole Miss
- 1:35Speaker 1: should be fun enough, but even like Miami or I'm sorry,
- 1:38Speaker 1: Florida state SMU. We'll see Miami Stanford is a Friday night.
- 1:42Speaker 1: I think that's going to be a beat down. Like
- 1:43Speaker 1: I just, it's, they could have done better. They could
- 1:46Speaker 1: have done us a little bit better. I feel like,
- 1:48Speaker 1: but I don't make the schedule. We too gets a
- 1:51Speaker 1: little bit better for Notre Dame, you know, I know
- 1:55Speaker 1: you is in covering the sport nationally with Blake Rufino,
- 1:58Speaker 1: you know, and Joe, like, is there, I don't think
- 2:01Speaker 1: it's going to be incredibly close. It is a 20
- 2:03Speaker 1: and a half point spread, but is there anything to worry?
- 2:06Speaker 1: I mean, Wisconsin certainly bought into fickle and they are
- 2:09Speaker 1: playing with kind of house money. Nobody expects them to
- 2:11Speaker 1: be good or relevant. Like, are you just kind of
- 2:14Speaker 1: hoping that Notre Dame makes a few mistakes and leaves
- 2:16Speaker 1: you in a fourth quarter game?
- 2:17Speaker 2: So it's respectable or what is the, if you had
- 2:20Speaker 2: a concern for Notre Dame, what would it be this week?
- 2:23Speaker 3: I think the one concern I would probably put out
- 2:25Speaker 3: is that Colton Joseph explodes. He bursts onto the scene
- 2:28Speaker 3: and maybe Notre Dame's overlooking him a little bit. But
- 2:30Speaker 3: that's about it. This Wisconsin team should be better than
- 2:34Speaker 3: it was last year. I think Abu Sama is an
- 2:36Speaker 3: underrated running back that they added to the mix. A
- 2:39Speaker 3: lot of their key guys on both lines of scrimmage,
- 2:41Speaker 3: which we know is super important, lost some key figures.
- 2:45Speaker 3: I think that overall Wisconsin, since Fickle took over, just
- 2:48Speaker 3: has not had that same type of churn and development
- 2:52Speaker 3: that we're used to seeing with the Badgers where, Hey,
- 2:55Speaker 3: there's a center or there's a tackle. That's at least
- 2:59Speaker 3: a top one 50 pick in the upcoming draft. There's
- 3:02Speaker 3: nowhere near that same buzz for this offensive line. They
- 3:05Speaker 3: haven't recruited at the same level. They haven't developed at
- 3:07Speaker 3: the same level. So I just don't have that major fear.
- 3:11Speaker 3: The one thing though, that you kind of alluded to
- 3:12Speaker 3: this of do you, if you're a Wisconsin fan, do
- 3:15Speaker 3: you hope that Notre Dame lets you hang around for
- 3:17Speaker 3: a period of time and you get to shock them.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Notre Dame did do this last year. They did it
- 3:22Speaker 3: against Boston College. It's not beyond them to overlook an
- 3:27Speaker 3: opponent and to play down to them. They have done
- 3:29Speaker 3: that my entire lifetime as a Notre Dame fan. It
- 3:32Speaker 3: was certainly a Brian Kelly problem. Marcus Freeman's been better
- 3:35Speaker 3: about it since the NIU loss, but they do do
- 3:38Speaker 3: this from time to time where maybe they come out
- 3:40Speaker 3: and they think that they've read every single headline about
- 3:43Speaker 3: them and they think that they're unstoppable, but I don't
- 3:46Speaker 3: think that Freeman has that I don't think he lets
- 3:49Speaker 3: his team get ahead of themselves to that degree. Again,
- 3:52Speaker 3: to reiterate, though, the main thing that if I were
- 3:54Speaker 3: to define something, if something unexpectedly shocked everybody and this
- 3:58Speaker 3: game ended up being tighter, Colton Joseph would be the
- 4:01Speaker 3: one variable that creates some havoc.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Notre Dame.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I think it's a little unfair and I like Marcus
- 4:08Speaker 1: Freeman because I think he's so real and I don't,
- 4:10Speaker 1: I've said this several times, but I don't know if
- 4:12Speaker 1: I've ever said it to you. Like his interview with
- 4:13Speaker 1: Josh Pate was one of my favorite interviews I've ever
- 4:15Speaker 1: seen in my entire life. Just because I thought, dude,
- 4:17Speaker 1: like he just sounds like a human having a conversation,
- 4:20Speaker 1: not a college football coach. And so I like how
- 4:22Speaker 1: really is here's my here's, here's where I'm gonna push
- 4:24Speaker 1: back on just a little bit. They changed their whole
- 4:28Speaker 1: offseason and fall camp because the narrative around them was
- 4:30Speaker 1: that they started slow last year, and I didn't really
- 4:33Speaker 1: think they started slow. I just think they ran into
- 4:35Speaker 1: two college football playoff teams, and they were this close
- 4:38Speaker 1: to winning both of them.
- 4:40Speaker 2: You could say you started slow.
- 4:41Speaker 1: In the Miami game, but even the A & M
- 4:43Speaker 1: game I thought was more fluky.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Kind of the way it went down.
- 4:46Speaker 1: I still think they got away with a massive hold
- 4:47Speaker 1: on that touchdown, and Notre Dame probably should have been
- 4:50Speaker 1: in the playoff either way. But they changed their whole
- 4:53Speaker 1: fall camp to... account for starting slow, which to me,
- 4:57Speaker 1: wasn't as much of a problem. You just played two
- 4:59Speaker 1: premier opponents this year. You don't really have that same situation.
- 5:04Speaker 1: You could probably start slow and be totally fine, but
- 5:08Speaker 1: I do like the, I, you know, so I'm really
- 5:10Speaker 1: just pushing back on the narrative that they started slow,
- 5:12Speaker 1: not necessarily the way that he changed things. I do
- 5:15Speaker 1: think reprioritizing that because if Notre Dame does have a
- 5:19Speaker 1: slip up early in the year and then loses that
- 5:21Speaker 1: game to Miami, it's, they could get left out again
- 5:24Speaker 1: at 10 and two this year.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Like where are the premier wins?
- 5:27Speaker 1: Maybe SMU, maybe BYU, if they're able to get that
- 5:30Speaker 1: one too, but where are the premier wins that haunted
- 5:33Speaker 1: them a season ago?
- 5:35Speaker 2: And so I like the way that they've changed that up.
- 5:36Speaker 1: I also think that's pretty bad news for the, for
- 5:38Speaker 1: the first month of, of Notre Dame schedule, because I
- 5:41Speaker 1: don't know that you're going to catch them napping this year.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Hey guys, I'll get right back to chatting with Joe,
- 5:45Speaker 1: but first want to give some love to our friends
- 5:47Speaker 1: over at prize picks. Look, I'm taking Wisconsin's kicker right here.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I'm taking the more, On C.J. Carr's passing, the kicker
- 5:52Speaker 1: is just more than half a field goal made. I
- 5:55Speaker 1: think Wisconsin does get one field goal in this game
- 5:58Speaker 1: at least. I know that I think Notre Dame wins
- 6:00Speaker 1: by quite a bit, but certainly think you can pick
- 6:02Speaker 1: up an easy win here. Pair a couple of things
- 6:05Speaker 1: together like that that you're really confident on or just
- 6:07Speaker 1: tail me because I'm going to be right here. And
- 6:10Speaker 1: play a $ 5 lineup using code HMA. You get 150
- 6:12Speaker 1: in lineups to use for the rest of the season.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Go check out the Prize Picks app. We appreciate them
- 6:17Speaker 1: for their support. Go get on it right now.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Now back to Joe. I'm hoping not.
- 6:22Speaker 3: I think that to be more direct on the slow start,
- 6:25Speaker 3: to me, what it was, was the defensive performance and
- 6:30Speaker 3: the lack of a clear vision for what they were
- 6:33Speaker 3: trying to do on defense. There was no aggressiveness. They
- 6:36Speaker 3: weren't trying to come after anybody's head. It felt like
- 6:39Speaker 3: they were on their heels against Miami and against Texas
- 6:42Speaker 3: A & M. So it was, you're right to bring
- 6:46Speaker 3: up Maybe the framing of it of like, hey, we
- 6:49Speaker 3: started slow. We have to change how we're doing things.
- 6:51Speaker 3: It's more so we need to be better about understanding
- 6:54Speaker 3: what our defensive identity is. And this defense has a
- 6:56Speaker 3: lot of athletes on it. That's what was so frustrating
- 6:59Speaker 3: to me in the first two months of last year was, hey,
- 7:02Speaker 3: you've got some freaky athletes across the board. You've got
- 7:04Speaker 3: Boubacar Traore. You've got Kingston Viliamo Asa. Drake Bowen's a
- 7:08Speaker 3: really good athlete. Just talking about the front seven guys.
- 7:11Speaker 3: And I think that they went and added a couple
- 7:12Speaker 3: of other interesting pieces as well that are going to
- 7:15Speaker 3: make this front seven even more dangerous with Francis Brew,
- 7:18Speaker 3: Tiana Gray. Like I think that now as they did
- 7:22Speaker 3: show a little bit more aggressiveness down the stretch, they
- 7:24Speaker 3: have the bodies that they can be a little bit
- 7:26Speaker 3: more relentless. That to me is like the key that
- 7:28Speaker 3: you're trying to get out of the beginning of this year.
- 7:30Speaker 3: And with the matchup against a Wisconsin team that is
- 7:33Speaker 3: still a competent big 10 team, it still is a
- 7:36Speaker 3: competitive opponent. It's not like you're playing UMass in week one.
- 7:41Speaker 3: It allows for them to quickly identify what works, what
- 7:44Speaker 3: doesn't work. I'm hoping that this whole first month, the
- 7:46Speaker 3: season before, they end up having to face BYU and
- 7:49Speaker 3: then eventually Miami and then SMU, that they utilize it
- 7:53Speaker 3: to really hit the ground running on knowing how they
- 7:57Speaker 3: can attack opposing offenses. I just hated how Chris Ashe
- 8:00Speaker 3: came out and it was, hey, we're going to be
- 8:03Speaker 3: on our heels. We're going to be in zone. We're
- 8:04Speaker 3: going to let everything come to us. And when you
- 8:06Speaker 3: did that against two teams... that had Malachi Toney, Mario Craver,
- 8:09Speaker 3: and Casey Concepcion, some dudes with some legit-ass speed, it
- 8:13Speaker 3: got you gashed because they were just picking apart any
- 8:16Speaker 3: gaps in space on your defense.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Who has a better year this year, Leonard Moore or
- 8:22Speaker 2: CJ Carr? Leonard Moore. What a difficult question, but what
- 8:27Speaker 2: a good problem to have for Notre Dame.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Well, I think it's an interesting question. It is a
- 8:32Speaker 3: hard one, but I think the no brainer answer to
- 8:34Speaker 3: that is Leonard Moore because Leonard Moore hasn't had a
- 8:36Speaker 3: bad week. He's never played bad. I watched his film
- 8:39Speaker 3: this year for the upcoming draft and I'm like, holy crap,
- 8:42Speaker 3: this kid is unbelievable. He is the highest rated corner
- 8:47Speaker 3: prospect that I've evaluated. The kid for a six foot
- 8:50Speaker 3: two dude moves like he's a five foot nine corner
- 8:53Speaker 3: with the way that he's able to contort, pivot, readjust
- 8:56Speaker 3: and all those things.
- 8:56Speaker 2: But his instincts are nuts.
- 8:58Speaker 3: It's like a Will Johnson level of instincts where he
- 9:01Speaker 3: sees the ball before it comes out of a quarterback's
- 9:04Speaker 3: hand and he knows how to recalibrate, readjust in order
- 9:07Speaker 3: to make a play on the ball. But the thing
- 9:09Speaker 3: with CJ Carr, obviously it's like a hard standard for
- 9:12Speaker 3: him to compare to Leonard Moore, but he's still in
- 9:15Speaker 3: the hunt too to be a top 10 pick, to
- 9:16Speaker 3: be a Heisman Trophy winner. The thing that was really
- 9:19Speaker 3: interesting to me watching his film and then listening to,
- 9:22Speaker 3: I listened to Todd McShay break down the quarterbacks for
- 9:25Speaker 3: the class and he pointed something out that I think
- 9:27Speaker 3: was very clear for Carr is that he's the best
- 9:30Speaker 3: processor of the quarterbacks coming into this upcoming year. He
- 9:33Speaker 3: is really good at reading the field. And once he
- 9:36Speaker 3: makes that read, the ball's coming out of his hands.
- 9:38Speaker 3: I think what needs to happen this year though, is
- 9:41Speaker 3: that he needs to be a little bit less decisive.
- 9:43Speaker 3: And all I mean by that is his worst plays
- 9:46Speaker 3: were when he would make a decision before he like
- 9:50Speaker 3: truly evaluated what was happening in front of him. And
- 9:53Speaker 3: then we just ripped the ball. There were multiple times
- 9:55Speaker 3: where RPOs got picked off. There was the Reuben Bain play.
- 9:57Speaker 3: That was one of them. I think if he gets
- 9:59Speaker 3: that out of his system and starts to be a
- 10:01Speaker 3: little bit steadier, playing in an offensive system that usually
- 10:03Speaker 3: pulls out those tools under Denbrock, we're going to see
- 10:07Speaker 3: a nice leap from CJ Carr after he had a
- 10:09Speaker 3: really good starting season.
- 10:11Speaker 1: It feels a lot like the winner of that Miami-Notre
- 10:14Speaker 1: Dame game will be the team that gets the top
- 10:17Speaker 1: four seed, and the quarterback who wins that game will
- 10:20Speaker 1: likely be the favorite at least that week, unless some
- 10:24Speaker 1: chaos has happened beforehand for the Heisman. It feels like
- 10:27Speaker 1: it kind of, a lot comes down to that game,
- 10:29Speaker 1: both for the playoff seating and for, uh, you know,
- 10:33Speaker 1: national awards. I don't know that either one of them
- 10:36Speaker 1: cares that much about the national award compared to winning
- 10:39Speaker 1: in the postseason, but, uh, Miami is insanely talented. I know,
- 10:43Speaker 1: I know you guys have talked about them quite a bit. Um,
- 10:46Speaker 1: Do you think there's an edge on the field? I
- 10:48Speaker 1: know it obviously played up in South Bend. That'll help.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Do you think there's an edge on the field this
- 10:53Speaker 2: early without seeing either team play?
- 10:56Speaker 3: So the way that I've compared these two rosters, I
- 10:59Speaker 3: think that this is... First of all, I stand by
- 11:02Speaker 3: this take, and I've seen some people try it. Even
- 11:04Speaker 3: Blake's tried to argue with me a little bit on this.
- 11:06Speaker 3: This is the best game of the year. Unless something changes,
- 11:10Speaker 3: and there's so much time for everything to change, this
- 11:12Speaker 3: to me on paper... is the best game of the year.
- 11:15Speaker 3: And I wish it was in like week one or
- 11:17Speaker 3: week two that we would get it earlier, but it's
- 11:19Speaker 3: going to be even more exciting that these teams have
- 11:21Speaker 3: had time to grow and develop and figure themselves out
- 11:24Speaker 3: with a lot of new faces in the folds to
- 11:26Speaker 3: some degree. But the reason why I believe that is
- 11:29Speaker 3: that I think that there is just such a small,
- 11:32Speaker 3: if anything, I don't even think there is a margin
- 11:34Speaker 3: of separation between these two teams because the position group
- 11:37Speaker 3: edges for either side of the ball, Miami has an
- 11:40Speaker 3: edge on one area. Notre Dame has the edge in another.
- 11:44Speaker 3: We could sit here and go position group by position group.
- 11:46Speaker 3: I've done that on the show before. I've done it
- 11:47Speaker 3: on other shows. It's just so down the line with
- 11:50Speaker 3: the elite prospects on both teams. The effective coaching for
- 11:54Speaker 3: all these guys that they have developed and grown into
- 11:57Speaker 3: high-level players sets this up to be a massive game.
- 12:01Speaker 3: And it's something that I haven't gotten to view in
- 12:03Speaker 3: my lifetime. I know it's something that my dad got
- 12:04Speaker 3: to see as a Notre Dame fan growing up is
- 12:07Speaker 3: this game used to define... national championship seasons, who would
- 12:10Speaker 3: go to the national championship or would get recognized as
- 12:12Speaker 3: a national champion. I think that the big edge really
- 12:15Speaker 3: does kind of come down to which quarterback does hit
- 12:20Speaker 3: their stride by November, who's really at full form. Does
- 12:26Speaker 3: CJ Carr, after he played pretty well in this first game,
- 12:29Speaker 3: it was his first ever game, does he take that jump?
- 12:31Speaker 3: Does Darian Mensah hit the flow and have chemistry established
- 12:36Speaker 3: with his receivers. I really think this game is going
- 12:38Speaker 3: to be decided on which quarterback plays better, as you
- 12:41Speaker 3: just stated. And I give the slight edge to Notre
- 12:43Speaker 3: Dame because this game is going to be in South
- 12:44Speaker 3: Bend in November. Sure, there's a chance this game, the
- 12:47Speaker 3: weather's not really an impact, but there's also a possibility
- 12:49Speaker 3: it just randomly snows. It happens all the freaking time.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Ask anyone who went to Notre Dame, it gets freaking
- 12:54Speaker 3: cold there in November. So maybe that is the edge
- 12:58Speaker 3: that Notre Dame needs.
- 13:00Speaker 2: I am planning on going to that game.
- 13:02Speaker 1: I try to go to a big game every year
- 13:04Speaker 1: that doesn't involve my team. Cause it's so stress-free everybody around,
- 13:07Speaker 1: you know, 80,000 other people will be stressed out, but
- 13:09Speaker 1: I won't. Uh, but I am praying that the weather
- 13:13Speaker 1: is not an impact, but I already kind of know
- 13:14Speaker 1: that my luck is, is not usually very good.
- 13:16Speaker 2: So Joe, what do you guys have coming on Rufino
- 13:19Speaker 2: and Joe, what do you have coming personally? Where can
- 13:20Speaker 2: people follow you? All those things.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Uh, yeah, you can catch Rufino and Joe show every
- 13:25Speaker 3: single Sunday, Monday, now Tuesday, starting next week and Wednesday
- 13:29Speaker 3: at 7.
- 13:29Speaker 1: P.M.
- 13:30Speaker 3: Eastern time. We're, buttoning up our week one preview. We're
- 13:33Speaker 3: kind of rehashing some discussions. We're going to redo our
- 13:36Speaker 3: preview for Florida State versus SMU after the way that
- 13:39Speaker 3: Florida State sadly played. I'm sure you can agree with
- 13:42Speaker 3: me the way they looked against New Mexico State. But
- 13:44Speaker 3: I also did start my own channel where I'm doing
- 13:47Speaker 3: completely different stuff from Rufino and Joe, a little bit
- 13:49Speaker 3: more like deep dive analysis stuff, almost to a thousand
- 13:52Speaker 3: subs over there. So I would appreciate a follow on
- 13:54Speaker 3: that channel as well. TJ, it was great getting to
- 13:55Speaker 3: catch up. I'm excited to see how Notre Dame starts
- 13:57Speaker 3: this season.
- 13:58Speaker 2: What's the name of that new channel? We'll link it.
- 14:00Speaker 3: It's just Joe DeLeon.
- 14:01Speaker 2: It's just straight up Joe DeLeon. Easy to remember. Make
- 14:04Speaker 2: sure you guys go sub, bro. Appreciate you hanging out.
- 14:07Speaker 2: We'll see you again this year.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Of course.
