- 0:00God is in control.
- 0:05She's a happy girl. Hello, friends, and welcome back to another podcast of Woman
- 0:10at the Well Ministries, where we believe that all of us have to come to Jesus
- 0:15like the woman at the well in John chapter 4.
- 0:18Our highest priority is making God real in your life.
- 0:21Whether you are listening in our app, in your favorite podcasting app,
- 0:25or on our website at watwm.org, We invite you to sit down with us as we look
- 0:31to the scriptures to learn more about God and to strengthen your daily walk with Jesus Christ.
- 1:03Have you ever experienced the overwhelming goodness of God when you simply chose to obey Him?
- 1:09Deuteronomy chapter 28 paints one of the most vivid pictures in all of Scripture
- 1:14of what it means to live under the blessing of obedience.
- 1:18As the Israelites prepare to enter the promised land, God gave them this promise.
- 1:22And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of
- 1:26the Lord thy God, all these blessings shall come on thee and overtake thee.
- 1:32In this chapter, Moses reminds God's people that their obedience would bring
- 1:35blessings so abundant that they would overflow into every part of life.
- 1:39Blessings in their homes, in their work, in their families, and in their future.
- 1:44But he also warns that disobedience would bring sorrow, loss, and despair.
- 1:49For those of us living on this side of the cross, the message is the same.
- 1:54Obedience brings blessing, not because we earn God's love, but because walking
- 1:58in His ways keeps us close to His heart.
- 2:00Join us in this episode of the Woman at the Well Ministries podcast as Erica
- 2:04Close teaches from Deuteronomy chapter 28 and explores how listening to the
- 2:09Lord and walking in obedience still leads to joy,
- 2:13peace, and overflowing blessing today.
- 2:17Let's jump right into the,
- 2:20Let's jump right into Deuteronomy chapter 28. It's a long one.
- 2:25And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of
- 2:29the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments,
- 2:32which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above
- 2:37all nations of the earth.
- 2:38And all these blessings shall come on thee and overtake thee,
- 2:42if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God.
- 2:45Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field.
- 2:50Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground,
- 2:54and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kind, and the flocks of thy sheep.
- 2:59Blessed be thy basket, and thy store.
- 3:02Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.
- 3:07The Lord shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before they face.
- 3:13They shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways.
- 3:18The Lord shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses,
- 3:22and in all that thou settest thine hand unto, and he shall bless thee in the
- 3:27land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
- 3:29The Lord shall establish thee in holy people unto himself, as he has sworn unto
- 3:34thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, and walk in his ways.
- 3:39And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the
- 3:43Lord, and they shall be afraid of thee.
- 3:46And the Lord shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body,
- 3:51and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground,
- 3:54in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers to give thee.
- 3:57The Lord shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain
- 4:02unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand.
- 4:06And thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.
- 4:11And the Lord shall make thee the head, and not the tail. And thou shalt be above
- 4:15only, and thou shalt not be beneath.
- 4:18If thou shalt hearken unto the commandments of the Lord thy God,
- 4:22which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them.
- 4:25And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this
- 4:30day, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods, to serve them.
- 4:35But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord
- 4:40thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes,
- 4:44which I command thee this day, that all these curses shall come upon thee and overtake thee.
- 4:51Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field.
- 4:55Cursed shall be thy basket in thy store.
- 4:59Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land,
- 5:02the increase of thy kind, and the flocks of thy sheep.
- 5:06Cursed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and cursed shalt thou be when thou goest out.
- 5:11The Lord shall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke,
- 5:16and all that thou settest thine hand unto for to do until thou be destroyed,
- 5:21and until thou perish quickly because of the wickedness of thy doings,
- 5:25whereby thou hast forsaken me.
- 5:27The Lord shall make the pestilence cleave unto thee until he hath consumed thee
- 5:32from off the land, whither thou goest to possess it.
- 5:35The Lord shall smite thee, with a consumption, and with a fever,
- 5:39and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with a sword,
- 5:44and with blasting, and with mildew, and they shall pursue thee until thou perish.
- 5:50And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron.
- 5:56The Lord shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust. From heaven shall
- 6:01it come down upon thee until thou be destroyed.
- 6:04The Lord shall cause thee to be smitten before thine enemies.
- 6:08Thou shalt go out one way against them and flee seven ways before them and shall
- 6:12be removed into all kingdoms of the earth.
- 6:15And thy carcass shall be meat unto the fowls of the air and unto the beasts
- 6:20of the earth, and no man shall fray them away.
- 6:24The Lord will smite thee with the botch of Egypt, and with the emeralds,
- 6:28and with the scab, and with the itch, whereof thou canst not be healed.
- 6:33The Lord shall smite thee with madness, and blindness, and astonishment of heart.
- 6:38And thou shalt grope at noon day, as the blind gropeth in darkness,
- 6:42and thou shalt not prosper in thy ways, and thou shalt be only oppressed, and spoiled evermore.
- 6:49And no man shall save thee.
- 6:51Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her.
- 6:54Thou shalt build a house, and thou shalt not dwell therein.
- 6:58Thou shalt plant a vineyard, and shalt not gather the grapes thereof.
- 7:02Thine oxen shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof.
- 7:07Thine ash shall be violently taken away from before thy face,
- 7:11and shalt not be restored to thee.
- 7:13Thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to rescue them.
- 7:18Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people,
- 7:22and thine eyes shall look and fail with longing for them all the day long,
- 7:25and there shall be no might in thine hand.
- 7:29The fruit of thy land and all thy labor shall a nation which thou knowest not
- 7:33eat up, and thou shalt only be oppressed and crushed away.
- 7:37So that thou shalt be mad for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see.
- 7:42The Lord shall smite thee in the knees and in the legs, with a sore botch that
- 7:47cannot be healed, and the sole of thy foot unto the top of thy head.
- 7:51The Lord shall bring thee and thy king which thou shalt set over thee unto a
- 7:56nation which neither thou nor thornigh fathers have known, and there shalt thou
- 8:00serve other gods, wood and stone.
- 8:03And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword among all nations,
- 8:09whither the Lord shall lead thee.
- 8:11Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field, and shalt gather but little in,
- 8:16for the locust shall consume it.
- 8:19Thou shalt plant vineyards, and dress them, but shalt neither drink of the wine,
- 8:23nor gather the grapes, for the worms shall eat them.
- 8:26Thou shalt have olive trees throughout all thy coasts, but thou shalt not anoint
- 8:30thyself with the oil, for thine oil shall cast his fruit.
- 8:34Thou shalt begat sons and daughters, but thou shalt not enjoy them,
- 8:38for they shall go into captivity.
- 8:40All thy trees and fruit of thy land shall the locusts consume.
- 8:45The stranger that is within thee shall get up above thee very high,
- 8:50and thou shalt come down very low.
- 8:53He shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him.
- 8:57He shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail.
- 9:01Moreover, all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee,
- 9:05and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed, because thou hearkenest not unto
- 9:10the voice of the Lord thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes,
- 9:14which he commanded thee.
- 9:16And they shall be upon thee for a sign and for a wonder, and upon thy seed for ever.
- 9:22Because thou servest not the Lord thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness
- 9:26of heart, the abundance of all things.
- 9:29Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies, which the Lord shall send against
- 9:34thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things.
- 9:40And he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he hath destroyed thee.
- 9:44The Lord shall bring a nation against thee from afar, from the ends of the earth,
- 9:49as swift as the eagle flyeth, a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand,
- 9:53a nation of fierce countenance, which shalt not regard the person of the old
- 9:58nor show favor to the young.
- 9:59And he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle and the fruit of thy land,
- 10:03until thou be destroyed, which also shalt not leave thee either corn,
- 10:08wine, or oil, or the increase of thine kind or flocks of thy sheep,
- 10:12until he hath destroyed thee.
- 10:13And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and fenced walls
- 10:18come down wherein thou trustest throughout all thy land, and he shall besiege
- 10:23thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which the Lord thy God hath given thee.
- 10:28And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of
- 10:33thy daughters, which the Lord thy God hath given thee in the siege and in the
- 10:37straightness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee.
- 10:41So that the man that is tender among you and very delicate, his eye shall be
- 10:45evil toward his brother and toward the wife of his bosom and toward the remnant
- 10:48of his children which he shall leave,
- 10:50so that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children whom he
- 10:54shall eat, because he hath nothing left him in the siege,
- 10:58in the straightness, wherewith thine enemy shall distress thee in all thy gates.
- 11:02The tender and delicate woman among you which would not adventure to set the
- 11:06sole of her foot upon the ground for delicateness and tenderness,
- 11:10her eye shall be evil, toward the husband of her bosom, and toward her son,
- 11:14and toward her daughter,
- 11:15and toward her young one that cometh out from between her feet,
- 11:19and toward her children which she shall bear, for she shall eat them,
- 11:23for want of all things secretly in this siege and straightness,
- 11:27wherewith thine enemy shall distress thee in thy gates.
- 11:30If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of the law that are written in this book.
- 11:35That thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, the Lord thy God.
- 11:40Then the Lord will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed even
- 11:44great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sickness, and of long continuance.
- 11:51Moreover, he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt,
- 11:54which thou wast afraid of, and they shall cleave unto thee.
- 11:58Also every sickness and every plague, which is not written in the book of this
- 12:03law, them will the Lord bring upon thee until thou be destroyed.
- 12:07And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for
- 12:12multitude, because thou wouldest not obey the voice of the Lord thy God.
- 12:17And it shall come to pass, that as the Lord rejoiced over you to do good,
- 12:22and to multiply you, so the Lord will rejoice over you to destroy you,
- 12:27and to bring you to naught, and ye shall be plucked from off the land whither
- 12:30thou goest to possess it.
- 12:32And the Lord shall scatter thee among all people from one end of the earth even.
- 12:36Unto the other, and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor
- 12:41thy fathers have known, even wood and stone.
- 12:43And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy
- 12:49foot have rest, but the Lord shall give thee there a trembling heart,
- 12:54and failing of eyes and sorrow of mind.
- 12:57And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee, and thou shalt fear day and night,
- 13:02and shalt have none assurance of thy life.
- 13:05And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee, and thou shalt fear day and night,
- 13:11and shalt have none assurance of thy life.
- 13:15In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even, and at even thou shalt
- 13:19say, Would God it were morning.
- 13:21For the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of
- 13:25thine eyes which thou shalt see.
- 13:28And the Lord shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships. By the way whereof
- 13:32I spake unto thee, thou shalt see it no more again.
- 13:36And there ye shall be sold into your enemies, for bondmen and bondwomen, and no man shall buy you.
- 13:44Deuteronomy chapter 28 is the longest chapter in the book of Deuteronomy,
- 13:49and it closely follows from the very end of chapter 27.
- 13:53In fact, 27 flows directly into Deuteronomy 28.
- 13:57At the end of 27, if you remember, the Israelites were gathered at Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim.
- 14:04Half of the tribes stood on Mount Ebal and the other half on Mount Gerizim.
- 14:08The Levites and the priests spoke curses to those standing on Mount Ebal,
- 14:12and the people repeated them back.
- 14:14Then they were to speak the blessings to those on Mount Gerizim.
- 14:18And the whole point of this ceremony was to show that blessing and obedience
- 14:22were inseparable, and that the entire nation was agreeing together to obey the
- 14:28Lord and receive his blessings.
- 14:30As chapter 28 opens, Moses reminds the Israelites that their obedience to the
- 14:35voice of the Lord is the foundation of all blessing.
- 14:39The blessings that would follow were not random favors, but the direct result
- 14:43of a faithful and obedient relationship with God.
- 14:46They were literally the fruit of covenant obedience.
- 14:50In verses 3 through 6, Moses shows that all aspects of Israel's life would be
- 14:55touched by these blessings.
- 14:57They would be blessed in the city and in the field. Their children,
- 15:01their crops, and their livestock would flourish.
- 15:04Their baskets and their storehouses would overflow, providing for both the present and the future.
- 15:10They would be blessed when they came in and when they went out.
- 15:14God's blessings would touch every part of their lives.
- 15:18Verses 7 through 14 are full of promises. Promises of victory, abundance, and honor.
- 15:24And in verse 7, God promises victory over their enemies.
- 15:28In verse 9, He promises to establish them as a holy people unto Himself,
- 15:32if they would keep His commandments and walk in His ways.
- 15:36In verse 10, we see that other nations would recognize that they belonged to the one true living God.
- 15:42Verse 11 promises abundance in children, in livestock, and in crops.
- 15:47And in verse 12, the Lord promises to open his good treasure,
- 15:51the heavens, to give rain and to bless all the work of their hands.
- 15:56The Israelites would lend to many nations and would never borrow.
- 16:00And in verse 13, God promises that they would be the head and not the tail,
- 16:04that they would be a leader among all the nations around them.
- 16:08Finally, verse 14 closes the section with a clear command.
- 16:12They were not to turn aside from any of God's words, either to the right nor
- 16:16to the left, nor to go after other gods.
- 16:20The blessings of God would only come through complete obedience to his word.
- 16:26The second section of this chapter, from verses 15 through 68,
- 16:31is a really long and sobering warning about the consequences of disobedience.
- 16:37It begins with a reminder that the curses would come if the Israelites did not
- 16:41listen to the voice of the Lord.
- 16:42The same categories that were blessed earlier, the city, the field,
- 16:46the basket, the store, the body, and the crops, would now be cursed.
- 16:51Disobedience would unravel every one of those blessings that were previously shared.
- 16:56They would be cursed in the city and in the field. Their work would fail,
- 17:01their fruit would wither, and their comings and their goings would bring sorrow instead of joy.
- 17:08Verses 20-24 describe confusion, rebuke, pestilence, and drought as the result of disobedience.
- 17:15The heavens above would become as brass and the earth beneath as iron.
- 17:20Even nature itself would testify against their sin.
- 17:25God made it clear that their rebellion would not only affect them as individuals
- 17:30and them as a community, but it would affect the land itself.
- 17:36And remember, this was supposed to be a land that flowed with milk and honey.
- 17:42In verses 25-37, the Lord warns that Israel would face defeat and oppression.
- 17:48They would suffer the same plagues that struck Egypt.
- 17:51They would face mental and emotional anguish, blindness, and despair.
- 17:56Their marriages would be broken, their crops would fail, their livestock would
- 18:00die, and their children would be taken from them.
- 18:02The most tragic prophecy comes in verses 36 and 37, that a foreign king would
- 18:07rule over them, that they would serve other gods, and that they would become,
- 18:11quote-unquote, in astonishment, a proverb, and a byword among the nations.
- 18:15They would literally be a nation that people told stories about.
- 18:23Verses 38 through 44 describe economic loss and a complete reversal of what
- 18:30should happen in society.
- 18:33The Israelites' labor would be in vain.
- 18:36Foreigners would take what they had worked for. Their children would be taken into captivity.
- 18:42And instead of being the head, they would become the tail.
- 18:46Disobedience would completely undo all that obedience had promised to them.
- 18:53Verses 45 through 57 continue this really painful warning.
- 18:58Verse 45 makes it clear that once again, not listening to the voice of the Lord
- 19:02would bring about all of these curses.
- 19:04And the judgments would serve as a sign and a wonder, a warning to future generations.
- 19:10Verse 47 reveals the heart of the problem. Because of service not the Lord thy
- 19:15God with joyfulness and with gladness of heart.
- 19:19Their lack of joyful obedience would bring devastating consequences.
- 19:25They would be enslaved by a nation from afar with a fierce countenance.
- 19:29Their cities would be besieged, their walls torn down.
- 19:33This description turns really horrifying in verses 53-57 as people resort to
- 19:39literally eating their own children,
- 19:42a symbol of how sin corrupts even the most basic moral instincts.
- 19:51Disobedience didn't just lead the Israelites to ruin, but to a true moral decay
- 19:58that would cut to the very heart of their humanity.
- 20:03The last section begins with a final if-then warning.
- 20:08If they would not obey the Lord, all of these curses would come upon them.
- 20:13They would suffer plagues, diseases, and a great decrease in population.
- 20:19Verse 62 says that though they were meant to be as numerous as the stars of
- 20:23heaven, because of disobedience, they would be left few in number.
- 20:28They would be plucked from off the land that God had given them.
- 20:32The chapter closes with one of the most chilling prophecies in all of Scripture.
- 20:37Verse 64 says that the Lord would scatter them among all nations,
- 20:41and that in those lands they would find no rest or ease.
- 20:45Their lives would hang in doubt before them. They would live in constant fear,
- 20:50wishing morning would come at night, and night would come in the morning.
- 20:53And the final warning declares that they would be returned to bondage,
- 20:58just like they were in Egypt, and sold to their enemies.
- 21:03Deuteronomy 28 is one of the most powerful and sobering chapters in all of Scripture.
- 21:08It reminds us that our relationship with God is not a casual one.
- 21:13It is a covenant, a promise, and that covenant is marked by obedience.
- 21:19The Israelites were about to enter the promised land, a land that was overflowing with blessings.
- 21:25But the Lord wanted them to understand that the blessings were tied to their faithfulness.
- 21:30The blessings described in the first 14 verses are beautiful.
- 21:35They show that when God's people live in obedience, every part of their lives
- 21:38can be touched by His favor—their homes, their work, their families,
- 21:43their land, and their future.
- 21:45The Lord doesn't bless them halfway. He blesses abundantly, and His blessings
- 21:50overflow into every part of life.
- 21:52But obedience is a key that unlocks those blessings.
- 21:56As believers today, we know that we cannot earn God's favor.
- 22:00It is a gift of grace through Jesus Christ.
- 22:04Yet this chapter reminds those of us on this side of the cross that obedience still matters deeply.
- 22:10Jesus said in John 14, 15, if you love me, keep my commandments.
- 22:16Our obedience is not a way to gain God's love, but it is the natural expression of it.
- 22:23Obedience flows from gratitude, from the realization that everything we have
- 22:27and everything we are comes from him.
- 22:31The long section about curses is difficult to read, but it teaches us something essential about sin.
- 22:38Sin always has consequences.
- 22:40When we turn away from God, we lose not only his blessings, but also the peace
- 22:44and joy that come from his presence.
- 22:47Disobedience leads to confusion, loss, fear, and despair.
- 22:53It corrodes everything it touches, just like it did for the Israelites.
- 22:58Verse 47 speaks volumes. Because thou servest not the Lord thy God with joyfulness
- 23:04and with gladness of heart.
- 23:06That verse tells me that the Lord is not just looking for rule-keeping.
- 23:11He's looking for hearts that delight in him and joyfully obey him.
- 23:18True obedience is motivated by love, and it's sustained by gratitude and thankfulness.
- 23:26The end of the chapter reminds us how far sin can take us into bondage,
- 23:31fear, and hopelessness.
- 23:33But for those of us on this side of the cross, there is good news.
- 23:37Jesus took the curse upon himself.
- 23:40Galatians 3.13 says, Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law,
- 23:45being made a curse for us.
- 23:47What a gift of grace. Because of Jesus, we are no longer bound to the curse
- 23:53of sin and disobedience.
- 23:55We've been given the opportunity to live in the blessing of his presence,
- 23:59forgiveness, and eternal life.
- 24:02Deuteronomy 28 reminds us to live each day in obedience, not out of fear, but out of love.
- 24:08It reminds us that obedience brings joy and peace, while disobedience brings sorrow and loss.
- 24:17God still blesses those who walk closely with him, who listen for his voice, and who follow his word.
- 24:23Ask yourself today, am I living a life that reflects joyful obedience to God?
- 24:30Am I serving him with gladness of heart?
- 24:33The Lord longs to bless his people, and his blessings, even now,
- 24:39still overflow to those who listen, love, and obey.
- 24:44Remember, you are loved.
- 24:47Jesus loves you. Amen.
