- 0:11Almighty, thank you Jesus. Thank you Jesus for these words.
- 0:17Thank you Jesus. Let them wash over us today,
- 0:21Lord. Speak a better word over us.
- 0:25Lord, let us hold fast to the truth.
- 0:29God, let us be taught by you. Let us sit at your feet and be
- 0:34disciples of you. God, let us know deeper depths
- 0:39of your love, God, and the plan for the ages.
- 0:43God, I pray that we'll tap in right now and we'll plug into
- 0:47the power source. Father, Lord, we pray against
- 0:51any distractions. Lord, we pray for zealous hearts
- 0:57God, zealous minds. Father fuel us and fanna are
- 1:02flames. Father, I pray that you will
- 1:06empower us from on high. God, give us supernatural
- 1:10strength to finish the battle. Give us supernatural strength to
- 1:15run the race. God, let us mount up like
- 1:18eagles. Father.
- 1:19Let us run and not grow weary. Father, I pray, Lord, that
- 1:25you'll have the last word on the day.
- 1:27Today we know that your mercies are new Today.
- 1:31We know, Father, that your plan for us is good.
- 1:35So we just say yes. We say Amen to even the pruning,
- 1:39Father, even the cutting off of the dead branches and the dead
- 1:43weight. Father, let the seed go in to
- 1:47fertile soil. Father, let it produce a crop.
- 1:50Let it produce fruit. Father, let it produce a
- 1:52harvest. God, I pray in the name of Jesus
- 1:58that you'll help us to snatch those out of the fire.
- 2:01God, I pray in the name of Jesus that you'll help us to see the
- 2:05world all around us the way that you do.
- 2:08I pray in the name of Jesus. Father, for healing from on
- 2:11high. I pray in the name of Jesus for
- 2:14restoration and reconciliation. God, I pray in the name of Jesus
- 2:19that you, Lord, we'll be well pleased with the life that we
- 2:24live. Lord, help us to stand on truth.
- 2:28Help us to live the right way. God, help us to take the gospel
- 2:35of peace out to the nation's father.
- 2:37Let us run the race well, Father, and finish well.
- 2:41Father, I pray that we'll be found sharing our testimony.
- 2:45I pray that we will be found meditating on our salvation
- 2:48story. God, I pray in the name of Jesus
- 2:53that we'll be able to rightly divide the word.
- 2:58God, I pray in the name of Jesus that will lift up our shield of
- 3:02faith today. God, I pray that you will
- 3:05increase our faith today. Lord, let us not be found with
- 3:14vain repetition of just going through the motions.
- 3:21God, help us to not be found with arguing things that have no
- 3:27eternal value. Lord, I pray that we'll be
- 3:30steadfast in our zealousness for you.
- 3:33Lord, I pray that we'll be locked eyes with Jesus Christ.
- 3:37I pray that we have our hands to the plow and we're not
- 3:40distracted and despondent. Lord, I pray in the name of
- 3:43Jesus against depression and anxiety, God and fear.
- 3:48Lord, wake us up in the morning with mercies that are anew with
- 3:53the angels singing all around us.
- 3:55Father, let us wake up in the morning with a new lease on
- 3:59life. Father, I pray in the name of
- 4:02Jesus that we can confess and repent and return back to you.
- 4:06God, every day. Lord, we come to you, humble
- 4:10Lord, every day we come to you in humility, Father, every day
- 4:14we come to you, Father. Not groveling as servants, God,
- 4:19but we're bond servants yoked to the King of Kings and the Lord
- 4:22of Lords, knowing that your plans are better than our own
- 4:26manufacturing of our lives, of how we think that this should
- 4:30go. God, we never have to worry
- 4:32about being missing out on things that are going on around
- 4:37us that you have for us, Lord, that you're going to lead us in
- 4:40righteousness and you're going to lead us in heavenly places.
- 4:44And Lord, I pray for heaven to come to earth today.
- 4:47Jesus, let us live inside of that reality, Father, all around
- 4:51us, Lord, is peace because we are the peacemakers and we are
- 4:55more than conquerors. And God, we crush the head of
- 4:58the enemy today, Father, in the name of Jesus, Lord, we assail
- 5:03him. Father, we move into the
- 5:04darkness. God, we take back the
- 5:07strongholds of the enemy that he thought was his Father in the
- 5:10name of Jesus. Not by our own power, not by our
- 5:14own might, not by our own cleverness, God, not by our own
- 5:18IQ, God, not by our own financial status, God, but by
- 5:22the power of the blood of the Lamb.
- 5:24God, we proclaim peace over our households by the power of the
- 5:29blood of the Lamb. We pray healing over our bodies
- 5:32God, by the power of the blood of the Lamb.
- 5:35Lord, we call the prodigals home by the power of the blood of the
- 5:40Lamb. God, we call for righteousness
- 5:44at the highest government levels.
- 5:46God by the blood of the Lamb. The earth is the Lord's and
- 5:51everything in it, and His Kingdom and His dominion shall
- 5:58increase. The increase Lord will never
- 6:03end. The increase of His government
- 6:06will never end. The government will rest on his
- 6:08shoulders. Why do the nation's rage and
- 6:14plot in vain? I pray Jesus you'll put all the
- 6:19enemies under your feet as a footstool.
- 6:23Lord, come back. Teach us your ways today.
- 6:26Help us to sit and to learn and to listen and be obedient.
- 6:30Teach us how to be obedient. God, let us learn our obedience.
- 6:38Sanctify us. God, cleanse the temple.
- 6:41Father, drive out all of the things in the temple that do not
- 6:44belong. Lord, come in and purify us.
- 6:49Purge us. God, cleanse us, Lord, and
- 6:53refine us, God, until you see your reflection within us, Lord,
- 6:59we love you, Jesus. We love everything about you,
- 7:02Jesus. Come, Lord, come, Maranatha,
- 7:07come. The Spirit and the bride say
- 7:09come, yes, Lord, come. We wait, we look up and we see
- 7:14our redemption drawing near. Thank you Jesus for a life worth
- 7:19living. We love you so much, Jesus, Holy
- 7:22Spirit, come in and teach us. Hide me, hide my words.
- 7:26I decrease as you increase. Let us hide your words in our
- 7:30heart so that we might not sin against you.
- 7:33Thank you Jesus. Thank you Holy Spirit, thank you
- 7:36God, Yahweh, Yeshua, Espiritu Santo.
- 7:42Yes, we love you. It's in Jesus Christ, holy and
- 7:46precious name. I pray men.
- 7:50Let's start in verse one. In those days came John the
- 7:57Baptist preaching in the wilderness of Judea.
- 8:01Well, if you remember, if you were plugged into the power
- 8:04source all the way back there in Malachi, you remember that John
- 8:08the Baptist was proclaimed in Malachi and he was one of the
- 8:12messengers coming to prepare the way.
- 8:15It's prophesied many times throughout the Old Testament
- 8:18that Jesus Christ would have a forerunner, and this would have
- 8:21been someone who would announce his coming and to prepare the
- 8:27hearts of men and women to receive the Lord.
- 8:31And there were many Jews that did.
- 8:33This would have been a national revival for them, for all the
- 8:37people that lined up to get baptized by John the Baptist.
- 8:41And it was a new idea here to be dunked in some water.
- 8:46And by the way, this is an immersion.
- 8:49This is not sprinkling. OK, If someone is in the
- 8:53hospital bed and cannot come out, sure, you can take a bottle
- 8:58of water and dip it on their forehead.
- 9:01Sure, the thief on the cross did not come down to get baptized in
- 9:07the water, and Jesus said today you will be with me in paradise.
- 9:11So baptism is not salvation. Baptism is not even contingent
- 9:18upon salvation, but it is the outward expression of what has
- 9:23been done on the inside, their confession and the repentance,
- 9:26and they are synonymous. And it is this rebirth and it
- 9:31there is this refreshing that comes and you kick the devil in
- 9:34the face whenever you go down into the water, and you're
- 9:38baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy
- 9:41Ghost. And so therefore, baptism should
- 9:45be by immersion. But there are acceptance.
- 9:50But by and large, it is not the sprinkling and the christening
- 9:54that saves us. That is not salvation, friends,
- 9:57This is just an outer sign of something that has happened
- 10:01within us and it is a public event and it should be done in
- 10:08public and not in private. And it is to show the world and
- 10:13the community all around you that you are marked by His
- 10:16goodness and grace and you belong to the way to and saying
- 10:24repent you, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.
- 10:28So this was John the Baptist ministry right here wrapped up
- 10:32in one word. Repent.
- 10:35And you might not understand that word, but it is a very
- 10:38simple word. When we return back to God, it
- 10:41is repentance. When we stiff arm the world and
- 10:45the ways of the world and we stiff arm all of the
- 10:48distractions of the world and we get rid of all of the things
- 10:52that are entangling us and dragging us down and choking us
- 10:56out. Whenever we acknowledge that
- 10:58God's way is better than our own way, that is repentance.
- 11:02It is the washing over of the mind.
- 11:05It is mentioned in Romans 12/1 and two, it is being renewed by
- 11:11His Word is repentance. Friends, it's having the change
- 11:15of mind. The greatest battle that you
- 11:17will ever encounter is within the six inches between your two
- 11:23ears. It is in the mind, friends.
- 11:26It is where all the battles are won and lost.
- 11:30Take every thought captive, for God has given you a sound mind.
- 11:35Don't worry about anything, but pray about everything.
- 11:39Rejoice always and pray without ceasing.
- 11:45This is how we win the war, friends, and we're going to
- 11:50learn as we go through these next couple chapters.
- 11:52We're going to learn how Jesus was able to counter the devil
- 11:58with all of the devil's schemes just by reciting Scripture and
- 12:03knowing Scripture and speaking Scripture out loud.
- 12:06It's such a powerful tool. And so this repentance requires
- 12:11us to return back to the Lord. Verse 3 for this is he that was
- 12:18spoken of by the prophet Isaiah saying the voice of one crying
- 12:23in the wilderness, prepare you the way of the Lord, make his
- 12:26path straight. I don't know if you remember
- 12:28back there in Isaiah how powerful it was.
- 12:32It was called the 5th Gospel and it proclaimed Jesus Christ so
- 12:38many times. And here is one of those
- 12:41messianic verses that was talking about Jesus Christ
- 12:45coming on the scenes and that he would have a forerunner and he,
- 12:50he was indwelled by the spirit of Elijah.
- 12:53And we're going to learn that as we go through verse 4.
- 12:57And the same John had his clothing of camel's hair and a
- 13:02leather belt around his waist, and his meat was locusts and
- 13:06wild honey. So here we can see that Elijah
- 13:10is referenced with his hairiness, perhaps an outer
- 13:15garment of hair which was known for the profits, and also this
- 13:20leather belt. And we can see that Elijah had
- 13:23the same raiment, the same clothing.
- 13:27And so how amazing is it that later on through these Gospels,
- 13:31you're going to see Jesus say that Elijah has come Because the
- 13:35disciples were asking, how come the prophecies and the
- 13:38Scriptures tell us that Elijah will first come?
- 13:41And he says, if you will accept it, Elijah has already come.
- 13:45And that's what he's referencing here with John the Baptist.
- 13:52And he's eating the locust and wild honey.
- 13:54Imagine that. What a hippie, what a natural
- 14:00person he is. He would be shopping at all
- 14:05these health food stores of our day and our age. 5 and then went
- 14:10out to him. Jerusalem, all Judea in the
- 14:13region rounded about the Jordan. So here, imagine this mass
- 14:19revival of people and they're saying, let's go out to see John
- 14:23the Baptist and let's see what he's talking about.
- 14:26And he's saying repent. He's saying the Kingdom of
- 14:29heaven is at hand. He's saying be baptized for the
- 14:32remission of sins. He's telling them how to be
- 14:36saved. And he's calling out Jesus
- 14:38Christ coming on the scene. And this was Jesus Christ,
- 14:42cousin here. 6 And we're baptized of him and Jordan
- 14:48confessing their sins. So here you can see that this is
- 14:53synonymous. The confession of sins with
- 14:56baptism is the repentance. 7 But when he saw many of the
- 15:02Pharisees and the Sadducees that came to his baptism, he said
- 15:07unto them, Oh, you generation of Vipers, who has warned you to
- 15:11flee from the wrath to come? So he's calling this religious
- 15:15set out. And this, as we mentioned in the
- 15:18last chapter or so, this was a group of zealous men who were
- 15:23trying to keep the traditions of of the Jewish heritage alive
- 15:30post exile. They did not have the temple of
- 15:33the Lord. And so they had these synagogues
- 15:36where they would go in and they would have these discussions
- 15:40about the law. And they had formed laws on top
- 15:43of laws on top of laws to protect the original Mosaic
- 15:47laws. And they actually upheld their
- 15:51additions to be equal with the law of Moses.
- 15:56And they required that these people all around the Jewish
- 16:01nation would not offend any of their oral traditions.
- 16:08And if they did, they treated it as if they were blaspheming
- 16:14against God himself. And here John the Baptist is
- 16:17calling them out for their heresy.
- 16:19He's calling them out, and he's calling them a brood of Vipers.
- 16:22And he's saying, who has warned you to flee from what is coming?
- 16:308 bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance.
- 16:35So what is he talking about in verse 8?
- 16:37He's saying truly come in repentance.
- 16:40Don't just come out for a show. Don't just come out and do
- 16:45something because everybody else is doing it.
- 16:48Don't just make it all about yourself, but truly come in
- 16:53repentance. And that is our call today,
- 16:57friends. Don't get baptized because
- 16:59everybody else is getting baptized.
- 17:01Don't get baptized because somebody talked you into it.
- 17:05Don't get baptized because you're being manipulated.
- 17:10Don't even get baptized because you're afraid of going to hell.
- 17:14We should get baptized because we've already accepted Jesus
- 17:20Christ as our Lord and Savior. It's already happened.
- 17:24And then baptism is just the outward expression of that.
- 17:28And people should see the fruit of your life, friends.
- 17:32They should see you turning from sin.
- 17:35They should see that your posts are in line with God's word and
- 17:42they're not counter what the Word of God says.
- 17:46And yes, there is sanctification for us.
- 17:50And yes, God is long-suffering with us, but there should be a
- 17:56drastic change in the fruit of your life when you come to the
- 18:00Lord God Almighty. We need to put down all of the
- 18:05things of the world and stiff arm all the things of the world.
- 18:08Do not love the world or anything in the world.
- 18:12We need to be in love with Jesus Christ and in love with His
- 18:17Word. And it's ignorance of the word
- 18:20of God which is the biggest problem.
- 18:22So I'm so glad that you're on this faith journey with me
- 18:26today, friend. 9 And think not to say within yourselves, we
- 18:31have Abraham to our father. And I say unto you that God is
- 18:35able to these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
- 18:38They had this false sense of security that because of their
- 18:42lineage to Abraham, they were going to get into the presence
- 18:47of God one day. That there was no way for a Jew
- 18:49to go to hell to shield. There was no way for them to be
- 18:55completely separated from God. But we could see in the story
- 19:00that is told of the rich man and Lazarus how the rich man was
- 19:04crying out to father Abraham, saying, please have Lazarus just
- 19:08dip his, dip his finger in the water and touch my tongue, for I
- 19:12am in torment here. And so it proves to us that
- 19:16these Jews cannot rely on their lineage to Abraham to make it
- 19:22into the presence of God. And if we do not give him his
- 19:26glory, the rocks will cry out. Friends. 10 And now also the axe
- 19:31is laid unto the root of the trees.
- 19:34Therefore every tree which brings not forth good fruit is
- 19:38cut down and cast into the fire. If the branches are not
- 19:42producing the fruit, they're cut off and cast into the fire.
- 19:45It's a very simple explanation of what it looks like to be
- 19:49connected to the vine. And just remember, friends, that
- 19:53whenever we are connected to the Lord Jesus Christ, it will be a
- 19:57natural response to produce just the fruits of peace, love,
- 20:07generosity, self-control, kindness and gentleness.
- 20:14Friends, joy, abounding patience.
- 20:23We shouldn't be knee jerk. Reactions to every emotion that
- 20:30comes our way. We need to make our emotions
- 20:32subject to the Word of God and to the Holy Spirit that lives
- 20:37within us. We should exude all the fruits
- 20:42of the Spirit. That is a great marker of if you
- 20:49are connected to the vine or not.
- 20:51And yes, it is natural to have these thoughts that come in, but
- 20:55we do not need to give in to the thoughts.
- 21:00We need to make these thoughts subject unto the Lord Jesus
- 21:04Christ. We need to put our knee on the
- 21:08neck of them. We need to make sure we crush
- 21:14all of the rebellion as soon as it enters into the mind.
- 21:17Friends, that is the battle zone.
- 21:21And he's talking about the axe being laid to the tree.
- 21:25He's about to go to work. 11 I indeed baptize you with water
- 21:30unto repentance, But he that comes after me is mightier than
- 21:35I, whose shoes I'm not even worthy to tie.
- 21:38He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire.
- 21:43Praise God, Hallelujah, we love you.
- 21:45Lord Jesus, baptize us with this Holy Ghost and fire.
- 21:50Let us prophecy and dream dreams.
- 21:52God, give us the power of the miraculous.
- 21:55God, I pray in the name of Jesus for this baptism of fire and the
- 22:00Holy Ghost upon every St. So many of us, friends, we
- 22:10forget our heritage. So many of us.
- 22:12We squander our inheritance. So many of us are lazy.
- 22:17So many of us are completely calloused to the Word of God and
- 22:23the power that is accessible to every single St.
- 22:32So many of us sit idle and we believe the lies of the enemy.
- 22:38So many of us make it all about pleasure, and so many of us make
- 22:46it all about this world and the things of this world, and we
- 22:52forget that Jesus Christ has called us to the greatest
- 22:56adventure that we could ever live.
- 22:58And we should live on fire and be full of the Holy Ghost
- 23:02Friends 12 whose fan is in his hand.
- 23:08And he will thoroughly purge his floor and gather his wheat into
- 23:14the garner, but he will burn up the shaft with unquenchable
- 23:17fire. This is the same thing he's
- 23:19talking about with the axe being laid to the tree and every tree
- 23:24that does not bring good fruit. This is the same principle.
- 23:27It's it's talked about twice. And all of the people here
- 23:32listening, they would have understood these principles of
- 23:36the wheat and the chaff because they were a farming country and
- 23:41they had to provide all the food for themselves.
- 23:44And they would have known that this winnowing fork is throwing
- 23:47the wheat up into the air and all the chaff is blown in the
- 23:52wind and then the kernels and everything has fallen to the
- 23:56floor. And they'd gather that up for
- 23:57their food, but everything else that was not edible would be
- 24:01burned up and it would be burned up quickly.
- 24:04And John is calling this brood of Vipers, this religious sect
- 24:09of people who think that their self righteousness is going to
- 24:12get them into heaven. He's saying that you will be
- 24:15eternally separated from God Almighty forever.
- 24:18And ever because you do not trust Jesus Christ, you do not
- 24:22trust the Lord God. You are only adding bylaws onto
- 24:26laws and you're only trying to get in by all of the things that
- 24:32were done by Father Abraham and you're not trying to do any of
- 24:36the things. All you do is exact this
- 24:40manipulation upon the masses for your own benefit.
- 24:44And God sees right through it. And it's no different in our day
- 24:47and our our friends. And we need a John the Baptist
- 24:50to come. We need Jesus Christ to come.
- 24:53We need a revival across this land.
- 24:55We need to see how far we have fallen.
- 24:59We need to see how we have mixed so much of the world into the
- 25:03church. We need to see how much we get
- 25:08it wrong. We need to see that the Bible is
- 25:11the only true, accurate source for us to rely on.
- 25:15And let every man be a liar, But His word will endure forever.
- 25:22And His word was at the beginning and the Word was God.
- 25:28And we need to be grounded and rooted in His Word.
- 25:32Friends, thank God you were here today. 13 And then comes Jesus
- 25:40from Galilee to Jordan unto John to be baptized of him.
- 25:45So here comes Jesus. And he just mentioned he said
- 25:49there's going to come one who's greater than I I'm not even
- 25:53worthy to tie his shoes. And then he shows up on the
- 25:57scene. If you can see it in the theater
- 25:59of your mind, if you could play it out in your imagination and
- 26:03you could just see John standing in the water and he's calling
- 26:06out the Pharisees and the Sadducees and all the religious
- 26:09folk of the day. And then he's mentioning 1
- 26:13coming greater than he. And then Jesus shows up on the
- 26:17scene. Praise God for this scene. 14
- 26:21But John forbade him and said, I have need to be baptized of you,
- 26:28and you come to me. He's saying, no, no, no, no, I I
- 26:33can't baptize you, Jesus, you're the Son of God, You're the
- 26:37Messiah. I'm just a lowly man.
- 26:41Don't ask me to baptize you. What does Jesus have to say
- 26:44about it? 15 And Jesus answered unto him,
- 26:57and he said, Suffer it to be so. Now for this it becomes us to
- 27:05fulfill all righteousness. And then he suffered him.
- 27:09So we can see that John the Baptist here, he didn't want to
- 27:13baptize Jesus, but Jesus said it needs to be done to fulfill the
- 27:19righteousness. And Jesus was sinless all the
- 27:25way through, all the way up to this point, Jesus had no need
- 27:29for confession or repentance because he had done nothing
- 27:32wrong. But for him to identify with
- 27:35sinful man. He says, yes, John, baptize me.
- 27:42Jesus understood everything that you're ever tempted with,
- 27:48friend. He identifies with your
- 27:50humanity. He was all God and he was all
- 27:54man. What a thought. 16 And when
- 27:59Jesus was baptized, he went up straightway out of the water,
- 28:05and lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit
- 28:08of God descending like a dove and lighting upon him the
- 28:13Trinity. Here we see God the Father, and
- 28:16God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost all in one.
- 28:20Here the Godhead, we can see it. We see Jesus coming out of the
- 28:25water. We see this dove descending upon
- 28:29him. We see the voice of God speaking
- 28:31out, 17 and low, a voice from heaven saying, This is my
- 28:37beloved son, in whom I am well pleased.
- 28:42This was a literal phenomenon of a voice speaking.
- 28:49This was a literal dove descending upon him and lighting
- 28:55upon him. Praise God.
- 29:00Well in there. What an amazing chapter here and
- 29:06what you're going to find as we go through these next four books
- 29:11of the Bible. You're going to see these
- 29:14stories and repetition. You're going to see so many
- 29:17little additions added to them, and this is the hinge point for
- 29:23the entire Word of God. From Genesis to Malachi points
- 29:28to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and then from Acts to
- 29:34Revelation point back to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
- 29:39This is it, guys. This is the main theme of the
- 29:43whole thing, friends. This is the highlight.
- 29:47This is the spotlight. This is the X on the map,
- 29:52friends. This is the buried treasure,
- 29:55friends, don't miss it. Don't miss how wonderful these
- 30:02next four books of the Bible are.
- 30:05They are incredible. And everything in the whole
- 30:09world, even now, today, points back to this event.
- 30:14Everything is hinged upon this event and we would do well to
- 30:23only strive after Jesus and Jesus crucified.
- 30:31That's what it's all about, friends.
- 30:33It's the only way you're going to make it there.
- 30:35It's the only way your neighbors going to make it there.
- 30:38It's the only way your children are going to make it there.
- 30:41It's the only way your coworkers are going to make it there.
- 30:43It's the only way your Co workers are going to make it
- 30:47there. It's the only way.
- 30:48He is the way, the truth and the life.
- 30:51It's all about Jesus Christ. It's always been about Jesus
- 30:53Christ. It will always be about Jesus
- 30:56Christ. How amazing is this book that we
- 31:01hold in our hands. I hope you've been blessed by
- 31:03this chapter here in Matthew. I know I sure have.
- 31:07I'm praying for every single one of you.
- 31:13I love you and we'll see you back here tomorrow.
- 31:18God bless you.
