- 0:36of Life, a ministry of the Church for Life. I'm
- 0:39Pastor David. Today on Voices of Life we explore
- 0:42one remarkable date, August 21st, a day in history
- 0:45repeatedly intersected with faith, conscience,
- 0:48courage, and the struggle for human dignity.
- 0:51Across the centuries, continents, and a single
- 0:54date has carried stories of priests, preachers,
- 0:58abolitionists, scouts, soldiers, citizens, and
- 1:01martyrs. So did you know that August 21st has
- 1:05produced some of the most powerful faith -shaped
- 1:07turning points in world history? Let's walk through
- 1:11them. steep social barriers was ordained as a
- 1:24roman catholic priest one year later he served
- 1:27serving on a small alpine parish moore wrote
- 1:29a poem that would become silent night three years
- 1:34later on christmas eve 1818 that hymn was sung
- 1:39for the first time quietly simply and prayfully
- 1:42inside a small church in obendorf did you know
- 1:47that one of christianity's most beloved hymns
- 1:50began with a young priest who overcame shame
- 1:53poverty and rejection and offered the world a
- 1:57song of peace now we'll move on to nat turner
- 2:00on august twenty first eighteen thirty one enslaved
- 2:03preacher nat turner launched the most famous
- 2:07slave rebellion in american history turner believed
- 2:10he received divine visions messages of judgment
- 2:14and deliverance and interpreted them as a call
- 2:17to rise against slavery the rebellion was violent
- 2:20tragic and consequential terrified slave -holding
- 2:24states and led to harsh new restrictions on black
- 2:29education assembly and worship did you know that
- 2:33nat turner's story forces christians to confront
- 2:35a difficult question how do believers discern
- 2:38god's voice when injustice is overwhelming and
- 2:42when suffering tempts people toward violence
- 2:46Now we move on with Henry Highland Garnett. Let
- 2:49your motto be resistance. Twelve years later,
- 2:52on August 21, 1843, another preacher, Henry Highland
- 2:56Garnett, a free black Presbyterian minister,
- 2:59stood before the National Negro Convention in
- 3:02Buffalo. His message was bold. It said, let your
- 3:07motto be resistance. Garnett called enslaved
- 3:11people to claim their God -given dignity and
- 3:13resist their oppression. His speech was so radical
- 3:17that the convention refused to adopt it. Did
- 3:21you know that Gardner's address sparked one of
- 3:23the earliest debates among abolitionists about
- 3:25Christian resistance, whether it should be peaceful,
- 3:28persuasion, or active defiance? On August 21,
- 3:331912, Arthur R. Eldred became the first Eagle
- 3:38Scout in American history. He earned 21 merit
- 3:41badges, an extraordinary achievement for the
- 3:44Young Boy Scouts of America. The original scout
- 3:47oath declared, On my honor, I will do my best
- 3:50to do my duty to God and my country. Did you
- 3:53know that the very first Eagle Scout was examined
- 3:55by the founders of scouting themselves, and that
- 3:59the award was originally designed as a symbol
- 4:02of Christian character, service, and moral leadership?
- 4:08Now we look... Across the ocean, at the Paris
- 4:12in Revolt, the liberation begins. On August 21,
- 4:161944, Paris was still under German occupation,
- 4:19but the city was rising. The French resistance
- 4:22had launched its uprising two days earlier. Barricades
- 4:26were built. Fighting spread through the streets.
- 4:28The Allies would not enter the city until August
- 4:3124, and the German commander would not surrender
- 4:34until August 25. Did you know that August 21st
- 4:38marks the moment when ordinary Parisians, students,
- 4:42police officers, shopkeepers, and clergy risked
- 4:45everything to reclaim their freedom? A very momentous
- 4:49time in 1959. On August 21st, 1959, President
- 4:54Dwight D. Eisenhower issued Proclamation 3309,
- 4:59formally admitting Hawaii as the 50th state.
- 5:02This followed decades of debate, a congressional
- 5:05act, a territorial referendum, and the election
- 5:09of state officials. Did you know that Hawaiians'
- 5:12admission required one of the most complex constitutional
- 5:14processes in American history, and that its people
- 5:18voted overwhelmingly for statehood? On August
- 5:2221, 1983, Filipino Senator Benigno Nimoy Aquino
- 5:28Jr. returned home after years of exile. He knew
- 5:32the dangers. He stepped off the plane. and was
- 5:36assassinated on the airport tarmac. His death
- 5:39ignited a nationwide movement that eventually
- 5:41toppled the Marcos dictatorship in the 1986 People
- 5:45Power Revolution, a movement that led in part
- 5:49by the Catholic Church and the Archbishop Jamie
- 5:53Sinn. Did you know that Aquino's martyrdom helped
- 5:57spark one of the most successful nonviolent Christian
- 6:00resistance movements in the 20th century? Across
- 6:04the centuries, August 21st has carried a single
- 6:06thread. Faith inspiring people to confront injustice,
- 6:10defend dignity, create beauty, and pursue freedom.
- 6:14A priest writing a hymn. A preacher interpreting
- 6:17visions. A minister calling for resistance. A
- 6:20young scout embracing duty to God. A city rising
- 6:24against tyranny. A people entering the American
- 6:27family. And a martyr awaking a nation. This is
- 6:31Voices of Life. where history reminds us that
- 6:34faith is never silent, never passive, and never
- 6:38irrelevant. It speaks, it challenges, it liberates,
- 6:41it heals, and it calls us to live with courage.
- 6:45I'm Pastor David. Thank you for listening. Thank
- 6:48you for joining us today on the Voices of Life
- 6:51podcast, a ministry of the Church for Life. As
- 6:57we close... May the stories we share strengthen
- 7:00your faith, steady your heart, and remind you
- 7:03that God is present in every chapter of your
- 7:06journey. If this episode encouraged you, share
- 7:10it with someone who needs hope. And until we

- 7:17and keep listening for the voice that leads you
- 7:19forward. This has been Voices of Life. Peace
- 7:23be with you.
