Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: This is a bramble jam podcast.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark, a homework review podcast. I'm
- 0:30Speaker 2: Megan and I'm a longtime Hallmark fan. Here to tell
- 0:33Speaker 2: you a little bit about what you're going to get
- 0:34Speaker 2: into day's episode. This is a mini episode. We recently
- 0:37Speaker 2: participated in a press junket with several other Hallmark podcasters
- 0:42Speaker 2: speaking to Sarah Drew and Peter Mooney of Mistletoe Murders.
- 0:45Speaker 2: We had the chance to ask them several questions, and
- 0:49Speaker 2: this mini episode is just the audio of the questions
- 0:53Speaker 2: that we hear at Girls Gone Hallmark asked. We are
- 0:55Speaker 2: going to leave a link in the show notes to
- 0:57Speaker 2: the full interview. It was an incredible discs session. Sarah
- 1:01Speaker 2: and Peter were so warm and lovely and shared so
- 1:03Speaker 2: much about the show, So I encourage you to give
- 1:06Speaker 2: the entire interview a listen. But here's a sneak peek.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Hi.
- 1:13Speaker 2: I'm Megan from Girls Gone Hallmark and like everybody here,
- 1:16Speaker 2: we are huge fans of this show and the two
- 1:19Speaker 2: of you together are pure magic. I have to wonder
- 1:24Speaker 2: Mistletoe Murders the series is based on an established podcast series,
- 1:29Speaker 2: So you guys came in and there is some overlap
- 1:32Speaker 2: between some of the voice actors in the podcast series
- 1:35Speaker 2: and people who appear on the show, But obviously the
- 1:37Speaker 2: two of you created your own versions of these characters.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Was there any part of you that felt influenced by
- 1:44Speaker 2: those other portrayals or pressure to honor those portrayals, or
- 1:48Speaker 2: were you really just trying to forge your own path.
- 1:51Speaker 3: I can speak for myself. I really just wanted to
- 1:53Speaker 3: forge my own path. You know. Kobe Smolders does such
- 1:56Speaker 3: an incredible job, but she's also a very different actor
- 1:59Speaker 3: than I am. Like, we have very very different energies.
- 2:02Speaker 3: And so I listened to the first two episodes and
- 2:05Speaker 3: I was like, she's so great, She's so brilliant, But
- 2:07Speaker 3: I also want to do my own thing. I want
- 2:09Speaker 3: to carve my own path. And the truth is Ken
- 2:12Speaker 3: has created all different mysteries for our TV series, and
- 2:16Speaker 3: just being in the medium of getting to engage with
- 2:18Speaker 3: the visual of it all, we really are our own thing, right,
- 2:22Speaker 3: So we're just sort of embracing our unique piece of
- 2:27Speaker 3: this storytelling. And also I think he not only are
- 2:31Speaker 3: the mysteries different, but even some of our backstories, the
- 2:34Speaker 3: way that Emily and Sam kind of come into the
- 2:37Speaker 3: picture is different. They know each other for a long
- 2:39Speaker 3: time before you meet them for the first time on
- 2:42Speaker 3: the Audible podcast, and here we get the meat cute
- 2:45Speaker 3: in the coffee shop.
- 2:46Speaker 4: You know, there's there's a lot.
- 2:48Speaker 3: That I think some of my backstory is different from
- 2:50Speaker 3: the Audible series, so it really is its own thing.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Same't I didn't want to get confused, and which happens
- 2:57Speaker 1: pretty easily. But I do love that they're both out
- 3:00Speaker 1: there like that. It's it's this I guess you wouldn't
- 3:02Speaker 1: call it a cinematic universe because one is is audio,
- 3:05Speaker 1: but like that there is this like like Christmas Town
- 3:09Speaker 1: existing in sort of two uh dimensions.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Yeah, totally totally.
- 3:14Speaker 3: And then now they have Middle Bridge, which is the
- 3:16Speaker 3: Violet spin off on Audible right now, and it's.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Doing so well. They keep winning, rapping up so many
- 3:22Speaker 4: awards the Audible series. So we're just thrilled for Ken
- 3:26Speaker 4: and Michelle and Headspinner and you know, that whole that
- 3:29Speaker 4: whole community. We love them so much and.
- 3:31Speaker 2: It gives all of us something to do while we're
- 3:33Speaker 2: waiting for season three next year.
- 3:37Speaker 4: Thank you Bok six episodes season.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that's my biggest wish about this show. Absolutely, you
- 3:43Speaker 2: kind of touched on this. The tone of the show
- 3:46Speaker 2: walks a line between cozy Christmas y and mysterious and murdery.
- 3:51Speaker 2: I'd love to know what the atmosphere is like on set,
- 3:54Speaker 2: which side of those things you guys are leaning into more.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I mean, the vibe here is very fun and playful,
- 4:00Speaker 2: so does that carry over as well?
- 4:03Speaker 1: Yes, like when it comes to like cozy, it's still
- 4:07Speaker 1: been too hot. It's seat acting. But the murder is
- 4:13Speaker 1: it's very safe. We've had no actual murders, yes, very
- 4:17Speaker 1: few injuries. Actually spoiler again.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Break my hand.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I saw that photo with the cast.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Yeah, just yeah.
- 4:26Speaker 3: I know you have a really great joke about my
- 4:29Speaker 3: method being a method actor.
- 4:31Speaker 4: You've done it in a few different interviews.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Would you like to try it out? I'm going to
- 4:34Speaker 1: try out to see if I get laugh this time.
- 4:37Speaker 1: But because she had a cast in season one on
- 4:41Speaker 1: the same hand and then broke her left hand in
- 4:45Speaker 1: season two, I always joke that she's very method, just
- 4:48Speaker 1: with terrible timing.
- 4:51Speaker 2: So having seen the season, I couldn't possibly pick a
- 4:54Speaker 2: favorite scene, but I do have to say that there
- 4:57Speaker 2: is a scene, and it's fine. Pair of episodes well,
- 5:04Speaker 2: that's my question part and it had to be. It's
- 5:08Speaker 2: so well done. But I'm curious, between the two of you,
- 5:11Speaker 2: was there a favorite scene that you loved filming, either
- 5:15Speaker 2: that was the most fun or the hardest, or the
- 5:17Speaker 2: most challenging or the most painful.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I'll give you the most the most challenging because it
- 5:23Speaker 1: relates directly to this. Gosh, we shoot pretty pretty quickly,
- 5:28Speaker 1: like we don't have a lot of time to get
- 5:29Speaker 1: these and Sarah was such a pro, such a trooper.
- 5:32Speaker 1: After she broke her hand, she was just worried about
- 5:34Speaker 1: getting the day and you know, going up to the
- 5:36Speaker 1: hospital being like, I think we can still get the scene.
- 5:39Speaker 1: We have to go to the hospital. But we did
- 5:42Speaker 1: keep filming, so we're like, what can we pull up?
- 5:44Speaker 1: So we pulled up a scene that that follows That
- 5:47Speaker 1: follows the later scene in that episode where Sarah and
- 5:49Speaker 1: are sitting by the fire, but Sarah was at the hospital,
- 5:52Speaker 1: so I shot it with her stunt double who's luckily there.
- 5:56Speaker 4: And where in my in the wig? Not my wig?
- 5:58Speaker 4: I don't wear a wig, but she wears a wig.
- 6:00Speaker 1: He's a wig to match Sarah's hair. Yeah, but because
- 6:03Speaker 1: of union rules and a whole serious, complicated things. She
- 6:06Speaker 1: couldn't say Sarah's line, so a script supervisor was off
- 6:09Speaker 1: camera reading Sarah's lines, and Sara's stunt doubles there looking
- 6:14Speaker 1: like Sarah sitting in the tree going in time that theliance.
- 6:20Speaker 4: He texts.
- 6:21Speaker 3: He texts me this because I'm I'm thinking there's no
- 6:24Speaker 3: way he's not like having to do his coverage and
- 6:26Speaker 3: scenes between us while I'm in the hospital. That can't
- 6:29Speaker 3: possibly happen. He's like, oh, yes, it is happening.
- 6:32Speaker 4: He described that I'm.
- 6:33Speaker 3: In the emergency room like having my you know, fingers,
- 6:37Speaker 3: like this interaction, you know, trying to set it whatever,
- 6:40Speaker 3: and he described as the whole scene and then writes
- 6:43Speaker 3: that's acting baby professionals to the end. Yes, I wouldn't
- 6:50Speaker 3: even right after I broke my hand.
- 6:53Speaker 4: It hurts so much.
- 6:55Speaker 3: But I was like so because I was running an
- 6:56Speaker 3: inn a stunt sequence, so I was like so pumped
- 6:59Speaker 3: full of adrenaline. Then I just kept trying to shake
- 7:02Speaker 3: it off. So I kept like walking from room to
- 7:04Speaker 3: room trying to shake it off, and then the medic
- 7:07Speaker 3: was chasing me. He's like, you have to sit down.
- 7:09Speaker 3: I have lots down and he finally got me to
- 7:12Speaker 3: sit down. I wasn't crying. I was like, can't. I
- 7:14Speaker 3: can't crack because can't wreck my makeup. We don't have
- 7:16Speaker 3: time for me to redo the makeup, so I can't
- 7:18Speaker 3: wreck the makeup. And he like, does this whole you know,
- 7:21Speaker 3: exam on my hand, and then he goes, she's done
- 7:24Speaker 3: for the day, she needs to go to the hospital,
- 7:26Speaker 3: and I said.
- 7:27Speaker 4: We don't have time for this, sin in tears. So
- 7:32Speaker 4: that's how that journey started.
- 7:35Speaker 1: So those, I mean, those were our most eventful scenes.
- 7:38Speaker 1: But I think I think the favorite scene was like
- 7:40Speaker 1: the argument in the parking lot. I loved that, loved
- 7:44Speaker 1: that gazebo scene. I love when we get to spend
- 7:47Speaker 1: time with them because there's so much for them to solve.
- 7:51Speaker 1: In these two episodes, we're moving at a pretty quick
- 7:54Speaker 1: pace through a lot of it. But when that pace
- 7:56Speaker 1: kind of breaks and there's like a personal moment between them,
- 7:59Speaker 1: those are those are pretty wonderful students.
- 8:02Speaker 3: We also, he wasn't in the scene, but there's a
- 8:04Speaker 3: really fun scene in episode five where we kind of
- 8:08Speaker 3: shot it as a winner. We're walking through this restaurant
- 8:11Speaker 3: and there are six or seven characters that come in
- 8:14Speaker 3: and out as I'm being led through and introduced to
- 8:16Speaker 3: this whole new world that we're going to play in
- 8:18Speaker 3: for these two episodes. And we shot it as a
- 8:21Speaker 3: as a as one shot and a lot, and we're
- 8:23Speaker 3: traveling and our camera operators is operating on a steady cam,
- 8:28Speaker 3: and the choreography of everybody kind of moving into their
- 8:32Speaker 3: place at the right moment to say their thing, to
- 8:34Speaker 3: do this stuff, and then the camera it's just a
- 8:36Speaker 3: really fun and intricate choreography to it that always energizes me.
- 8:41Speaker 3: That was actually the first scene we shot after I
- 8:43Speaker 3: broke my hand. That was literally Thursday morning, came back
- 8:47Speaker 3: with the cats. They put a sock on my hand.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that seems very west by the.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Broken hand while doing this winner, which adds to the
- 8:55Speaker 3: challenge of it. But I agree with you those like
- 8:57Speaker 3: those meati relational scenes are the most like fun and satisfying.
- 9:01Speaker 3: But also when you get a challenge like a woner
- 9:04Speaker 3: like that to do, everybody just kind of goes here
- 9:08Speaker 3: we go and we're doing it.
- 9:09Speaker 4: It's like live theater, you know, it's really fun.
- 9:11Speaker 2: So Sam and Emily both carry kind of emotional weight
- 9:15Speaker 2: from their past for very different reasons. In season two,
- 9:18Speaker 2: do you each have a moment that you feel was
- 9:20Speaker 2: a turning point for your characters.
- 9:22Speaker 4: Yeah, you're gonna see it.
- 9:24Speaker 3: I will say shooting the flashbacks for Emily in five
- 9:30Speaker 3: and six was a massive Ye. I didn't understand really
- 9:35Speaker 3: who she was until I was in hair, makeup, and wardrobe,
- 9:38Speaker 3: and then it was like it was a new person
- 9:42Speaker 3: with the whole history, unsullied and untouched in some ways
- 9:46Speaker 3: by the things that were to come. And even playing
- 9:50Speaker 3: the scenes with I don't know if I can spoil
- 9:53Speaker 3: that with the other actor in it, like I found myself,
- 9:57Speaker 3: it's a very different relationship Sam and Emily years later,
- 10:01Speaker 3: like so profoundly different. I'm responding differently, uh, interacting differently.
- 10:07Speaker 4: It's not as kind a relationship for sure.
- 10:11Speaker 3: And my character in playing those scenes and then just
- 10:15Speaker 3: being present and responding in the moment, I was realizing, oh.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Sweet girl, like you've been through it. You have been
- 10:24Speaker 4: through it.
- 10:24Speaker 3: I get why she there's still miles to go, but
- 10:28Speaker 3: I get that is sorry. I'm I'm like trying to
- 10:32Speaker 3: not look at my sweatpants. This is the party on
- 10:35Speaker 3: that and giving it all away. It's all a shamp
- 10:37Speaker 3: but yeah, but this, but that is a moment where
- 10:40Speaker 3: I was like, Okay, I get why and where and
- 10:44Speaker 3: how she turned and I'm trying to hide some things
- 10:46Speaker 3: I'm not allowed to say, which is why I'm stumbling
- 10:48Speaker 3: so much.
- 10:48Speaker 2: But yeah, you got to meet her too.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Yes, it was, and it's it's the weirdest.
- 10:54Speaker 3: It was the weirdest and wildest thing because I didn't
- 10:58Speaker 3: fully know who she was going to be until we
- 11:03Speaker 3: were on set playing those scenes, and then I was like, oh,
- 11:05Speaker 3: there she is. And even mel our director, was like,
- 11:09Speaker 3: this is so wild because I look very different in
- 11:12Speaker 3: the scenes for one thing, but it's but also her
- 11:15Speaker 3: energy is pretty different, and so she's like, I'm just
- 11:17Speaker 3: so used to watching you as Emily and now I'm
- 11:21Speaker 3: seeing a totally different person as Grace, but she's still you.
- 11:24Speaker 3: And it's like blow, Like my mind is like breaking,
- 11:28Speaker 3: and I'm like, oh, this is this is why, this
- 11:30Speaker 3: is life. This is real. People change, you know, Like
- 11:33Speaker 3: I wouldn't want to play Emily back when she's twenty
- 11:37Speaker 3: five because she's she's great.
- 11:40Speaker 4: She's not Emily, She's different. You know. Anyway, Sorry, I
- 11:43Speaker 4: just went on.
- 11:43Speaker 1: And on it.
- 11:45Speaker 4: I love it.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I think. I think for me, it was the
- 11:47Speaker 1: second arc in season two where Sam starts to break
- 11:52Speaker 1: the rules a little, because I think for him, he
- 11:55Speaker 1: uses rules to keep himself safe, keep everything structured in ordered,
- 11:59Speaker 1: and then he knows what's what and who's where, and
- 12:01Speaker 1: it makes everything feel predictable and safe. But I think
- 12:06Speaker 1: it's also kind of caused his life to shrink down
- 12:09Speaker 1: and become, you know, pretty myopic. It's just him and
- 12:12Speaker 1: his daughter and his job and that's it, and this
- 12:15Speaker 1: town is small and he can handle that. So when
- 12:17Speaker 1: he starts to break the rules, I think it also
- 12:19Speaker 1: breaks open, like a little insight into like how much
- 12:23Speaker 1: is out there that he's kind of not letting himself see.
- 12:27Speaker 4: I like that. Yeah, yeah, thank you so much.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Thank you for listening to this episode of Girls Gone Hamemark,
- 12:34Speaker 2: a Bramble Jam podcast. As we mentioned, the full episode
