- 0:00Hey you guys, this is friendly. I'm so excited to be back with
- 0:05y'all this week on the podcast. Just got back from my trip
- 0:09yesterday and I really hope y'all had a wonderful holiday
- 0:12weekend. It's always sweet to step away
- 0:15for a little bit and travel, but I did really miss getting to sit
- 0:19down and record what the Lord teaches me in my quiet time.
- 0:24So if you've been following along in other episodes, we've
- 0:28primarily been focusing on the book of Matthew.
- 0:32And after wrapping that up, as I was gone in my quiet times, I
- 0:36was praying and just asking the Lord, OK, God, what do you want
- 0:40me to study next? And I felt so clearly him direct
- 0:45me to the book of First Thessalonians.
- 0:48And honestly, I think 1st and 2nd Thessalonians, which that
- 0:53can be a tongue twister to say, let me just put that out there.
- 0:57But I think that they can be a little underrated for how deeply
- 1:02applicable and encouraging they are for us today in our day and
- 1:06age. So over the next couple weeks,
- 1:09we're going to be walking through both of those letters
- 1:12straight out of my quiet time. And we're just going to take it
- 1:16in chunks because this is not like Jesus's parables where each
- 1:22section kind of stands alone as a story.
- 1:25Of course, they all tied together.
- 1:27But these are pastoral letters from Paul, and there's a lot of
- 1:32layers. They're super rich, and I just
- 1:34don't want us to skim past any phrases or verses.
- 1:39So today we're just going to be covering First Thessalonians one
- 1:44one through 3 and let me just go ahead and get us started by
- 1:48reading it. Paul, Silas, and Timothy to the
- 1:53Church of the Thessalonians and God the Father and the Lord
- 1:56Jesus Christ, grace and peace to you.
- 2:00We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you
- 2:05in our prayers. We remember before God and
- 2:08Father, your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by
- 2:13love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord
- 2:17Jesus Christ. OK, clearly very short and sweet
- 2:22for today's episode, but before we dive into takeaways and what
- 2:26the Lord was teaching me, I do want to spend a little bit more
- 2:30time on background since we're starting a new book and I think
- 2:34it'll really help with context and help us going forward.
- 2:40So Paul planted this church in Thessalonica.
- 2:44This was during his second, second missionary journey.
- 2:48And after leaving Corinth, he came to this city and built up
- 2:52this church. But unfortunately, he did not
- 2:55get to stay there long because there were a lot of threats and
- 2:59opposition that he was facing. So he left sooner than he would
- 3:04have liked to. And because these were younger
- 3:07believers, this was a brand new church, you could hear some
- 3:11people say now baby believers are Christians.
- 3:15His heart was still very much with them and invested.
- 3:19So he sent Timothy to check on them.
- 3:22And Timothy, he goes and evaluates their church and how
- 3:27they're doing. And he comes back to Paul with a
- 3:29positive report that they are standing firm, they are unified,
- 3:34and they're walking in fellowship.
- 3:37So Paul, he's like a spiritual father.
- 3:40He writes this letter to them in response, and he's expressing
- 3:45his love and his care and ultimately his gratitude for
- 3:49their unity. But he's also continuing to
- 3:52encourage them and hold them accountable to persevering under
- 3:57trial, under pressure, and in the faith.
- 4:00So even though he's not physically present with them,
- 4:04he's making it clear. Guys, I'm with you in spirit
- 4:08now. Something that is also important
- 4:11to note, Thessalonica was the capital of Macedonia and it was
- 4:16the largest city there. It had, it says, around 200,000
- 4:21people at the time. So there was a huge trade
- 4:25highway that ran through it and they were actually allowed to
- 4:29self rule under Rome. But because of this highway,
- 4:34there was a lot of travel, meaning a lot of cultural
- 4:38influence and religious diversity, AKA idolatry.
- 4:44Now let me just pause. Does that sound familiar?
- 4:48We live in or I do I live in America.
- 4:51Assuming you live in America, we live in a place that is highly
- 4:57influential. There are so many different
- 4:59cultures and lots of different ideas constantly flowing in
- 5:03competing belief systems. And so these believers then they
- 5:08were learning how to live faithfully in a very spiritually
- 5:13noisy environment, and so are we.
- 5:17So that's why I think this is such an applicable book for us
- 5:19to study. But moving into the text, we see
- 5:23Paul open up by addressing the church, which literally
- 5:27translates into the congregation of believers.
- 5:31And it says in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 5:36Now that phrase in God the Father and Jesus, it
- 5:41communicates unity. So this is not just some social
- 5:44gathering that they come together.
- 5:46It's not just a shared interest or ideology.
- 5:50They are unified in the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
- 5:55Ultimately, he also mentions Paul, Silas, and Timothy.
- 6:01And that's also key because it shows that ministry was never
- 6:05meant to be a solo effort. See Silas, he was a prophet.
- 6:10And Timothy, he was a very young leader in the church.
- 6:14And Paul was an apostle. They all had different gifts and
- 6:18different roles, but they were unified in one mission.
- 6:22So they combined their callings for the glory of God and to
- 6:27build up churches. And that's still true for us
- 6:30today because it's cliche, but a lot of the times we hear your
- 6:35life is your ministry. But it is so true because
- 6:39wherever you work, wherever you go to school, whatever season
- 6:43you're in, wherever God has you, you were never meant to do it
- 6:47alone, but you have a mission. And so it's important to find
- 6:51those people who are like minded and have that goal to build up
- 6:57the church and to be unified in Christ.
- 7:01Now also, Paul writes that they were always thanking God for
- 7:05them in prayer. And let's just think about
- 7:09everything that Paul had going on as he's writing this letter.
- 7:13He is constantly traveling. He's planning churches.
- 7:17He's facing persecution so much so that he couldn't even stay
- 7:21with them. He's enduring suffering and
- 7:24consistently meeting new, new believers and leaders all over
- 7:30the world. And yet he remembers these
- 7:34Christians at this church in Thessalonica.
- 7:38He doesn't just start something and check a box and move on,
- 7:42y'all. He's interceding in prayer.
- 7:45There is so much power in intercession.
- 7:49So I just want to pause and ask, how often are you praying for
- 7:54others? Whether that's your family, your
- 7:57friends, your own church family, or your church leaders?
- 8:02Or is your prayer time strictly about you or what you need?
- 8:07Because yes, like it is so good to bring before the Lord our own
- 8:12request. That is biblical, but it is also
- 8:17so important that we are interceding on behalf of others.
- 8:21And also, is your life marked by prayer?
- 8:24Is it stirred up by the gratitude for the Lord and for
- 8:28what Jesus has done? So moving forward, Paul says
- 8:34grace to you and peace. Now we see him say grace and
- 8:38peace. He greets churches and a lot of
- 8:41his other letters the same way. But I think it's interesting
- 8:44because the Greek word for grace here, I might mispronounce it,
- 8:48but it's spelled how how it's spelled.
- 8:51It sounds like charis or cheris. And this carries the idea of joy
- 8:56and delight or abundant pleasure.
- 8:59So there's emotional warmth in that word.
- 9:03Paul is not rigid and he's not distant.
- 9:07He is expressing this joyous delight in God's people.
- 9:12So I also want to ask, do you experience that kind of joy as a
- 9:16believer, that joyous delight, and yes, with other Christians
- 9:22in the body? But even more importantly, do
- 9:25you experience that in God's presence in your moment by
- 9:29moment every day? Or has your relationship with
- 9:32Him become rigid or routine? Could there be more joy for you
- 9:38to experience in Him? And my answer would be yes,
- 9:42because I believe there's always more that He wants to gift us
- 9:47with. And lastly, Paul highlights 3
- 9:53very important qualities that mark a believer.
- 9:56Faith, hope, and love. Going into faith.
- 10:01Our faith is our foundation. It's trusting what we can't
- 10:06always see. Hebrews 11/1 says faith is the
- 10:10assurance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not
- 10:14yet seen. So is your faith active?
- 10:17Is it steady even when circumstances shift #2 our hope.
- 10:23That's our attitude. And yes, life is in no way
- 10:28always going to be easy, but are you marked by a hopeful
- 10:33expectancy? Because as a believer you are
- 10:38called a children or a child of light.
- 10:40We are God's children of light. So we know that there is more to
- 10:44come than what we're currently going through right now.
- 10:48So do you live with your cup half full or half empty?
- 10:53And thirdly, love. This is our response we see in
- 10:58first John 4/19. It says we love because he first
- 11:03loved us and love is indispensable.
- 11:09I want to read First Corinthians 13 really quick over you guys
- 11:13and just try to fill in your name where it says love because
- 11:17this is a great way to evaluate, OK, how am I expressing the love
- 11:21of Christ to others? Starting in chapter 13 verse 4,
- 11:26love is patient and kind. Love does not envy or boast.
- 11:31It is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own
- 11:36way. It is not irritable or
- 11:38resentful. It is not rejoice at wrongdoing,
- 11:42but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes
- 11:48all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
- 11:53Love never ends. So are you patient and kind, not
- 12:00easily angered, not self seeking?
- 12:03Because love is the visible evidence of Christ in us, Y'all?
- 12:08Faith anchors us, that's our foundation.
- 12:12Hope lifts us, uplifts our attitude and love flows out of
- 12:16us. It is the proof of Jesus.
- 12:20So are my final thoughts as we continue this study.
- 12:25These were young believers, a young church in a very loud and
- 12:28cultural influenced city. But Paul was not shaming them.
- 12:33He was thanking the Lord for them.
- 12:35He reminded them of who they were, what their identity was
- 12:40and who it was in. And he prayed for them.
- 12:43He called them higher. And so that's the tone of this
- 12:47entire letter. Encouragement.
- 12:49There's accountability, an emphasis on joy and
- 12:53perseverance, and we're going to unpack it slowly, but that's
- 12:57kind of where I want to close out today.
- 12:59So let's go ahead and move into prayer.
- 13:04Lord, thank you so much for the gospel.
- 13:09Thank you for your word. Thank you that even in the
- 13:13opening lines of a letter there is so much depth to study.
- 13:20Would you help us to be people of faith, hope and love?
- 13:25May our lives be marked by prayer, and not just for
- 13:28ourselves, but for those around us.
- 13:32Would you give us unity within your body, within the church?
- 13:36And would you restore joy where relationship with you has become
- 13:41regimented or routine? All God, teach us how to live
- 13:45faithfully in a very noisy culture where there are so many
- 13:50distractions. Strengthen our foundation.
- 13:54Would you just lift up our perspective?
- 13:57Help us to see from your point of view God, and let love be the
- 14:02evidence of Jesus Christ in us and in our hearts.
- 14:07We are so expectant for what you're going to continue to
- 14:10reveal as we study First Thessalonians.
- 14:13And we just love you so much. Father, we pray this all in your
- 14:16name. Amen.
- 14:18OK, well I'm going to end it there, but I hope that you all
- 14:22have a wonderful Tuesday and that we will continue just
- 14:28learning so much as we study this together.
- 14:31See y'all tomorrow.
