- 0:04Welcome to you, pick up and deliver the podcast where I pick up my
- 0:07audio recorder as I step out for a walk and delivering episode to you while
- 0:10I stroll around. I'm Brendan Riley Well greeting's listeners. It's a lovely day
- 0:23here in suburban Chicago, working from home, so I'm taking a break,
- 0:27taking a walk to the library and back, and using that time chit chat
- 0:30with you about board games. Well, for this the second episode the season,
- 0:35I am doing a look back. For those of you knew the podcast,
- 0:37to look back is an episode where I look at something I did four
- 0:41hundred episodes ago or four years ago and reflect on a little bit. Sometimes
- 0:46I go to listen to the episode. This time I did not, so
- 0:49this episode is going to be number six hundred and two. So I looked
- 0:51back at episode number two hundred two and I found that in that episode,
- 0:55I was sharing my thoughts on my ten for ten for the year, which
- 0:59actually a twenty by five. As you know, every year, I like
- 1:03to set a playing goal for myself that involves picking out well, it's inspired
- 1:07by the original idea of the ten for ten, which involves picking out ten
- 1:11games that you want to play ten times in a year, and I've done
- 1:15that a couple times, but then I also have decided I've also been trying
- 1:18to figure out a way to do other kinds of challenges in a similar way.
- 1:23My family has this wooden display that we keep in the living room that
- 1:26sort of shows progress on those. So that's where we keep the Family ten
- 1:30by ten Challenge, and so starting in twenty eighteen, I decided to start
- 1:34keeping track of those using my top of the Stack geek list that I maintain
- 1:38on board game Geek. So in episode two O two, I was talking
- 1:42about our Family Challenge gameplay challenge for the year, which was going to be
- 1:47a twenty by five. So instead of a ten by ten, during a
- 1:49twenty by five, we picked twenty different games play each of them five times.
- 1:53And it occurred to me, it might be fun if I look back
- 1:55over all of the ten for tens that I've logged starting in twenty eighteen and
- 1:59talk a little bit about what they were and how they went. Maybe you'll
- 2:02find that fun too. If not, I thank you for joining me today
- 2:06and I'll talk to you next week or next next time. Okay, So
- 2:09to start, Oh, if you want to look at these in more detail.
- 2:12The easiest way to find them is to go to the show notes on
- 2:15board on rattleboxgames dot com or wherever you get your podcast. The show notes
- 2:20should be coming through as data, and follow the link to my Top of
- 2:23the Stack geek list. If you go to my twenty twenty four Top of
- 2:25the Stack geek list, you'll find that I have a geek list for each
- 2:29year starting in twenty eighteen, and I track the ten for ten monthly in
- 2:34those geek lists. So that's where I got this data from. I just
- 2:38went to the December report for each of these geek lists. All right,
- 2:42let's get into it. Start to start with The first ten for ten that
- 2:45I tracked was in twenty eighteen, and this was a personal one where I
- 2:50was trying to track for myself ten games played ten times. So what I'm
- 2:53gonna do is read for you the quick do a quick read of the list
- 2:57of games, and then I'll talk about it. Eighteen, I was tracking
- 3:00the games gloom Haven, which I completed. Oh okay, here's what I'm
- 3:05gonna do. I'm gonna read which games I played and how many times I
- 3:08ended up playing them by the end of the year, then my total result
- 3:13for the year and what I thought of it. Okay, So in my
- 3:15twenty eight ten for ten I had I played eighty one plays by the end
- 3:20of the run, so nineteen away from the full hundred. Here's what I
- 3:23got. I played gloom Haven, we played at twenty times. Only ten
- 3:27of them count Arkham Horror, LCG seventeen plays, Tara Mystica fourteen plays,
- 3:32Century Galum Edition twelve plays, Pandemically Legacy Season two ten plays. So I
- 3:38got all of those. I got ten plays in then we had stuffed Fables,
- 3:44we got eight plays Ex Libris, we got five, MATINAI, we
- 3:47got five Role for the Galaxy eight and Via Nebula five. Now, I
- 3:53think some of those I don't know if some of those were on the table
- 3:55or online, or if they were all only on the table. Most of
- 3:59the only one on that could have been online. I think we're Matainai en
- 4:01roll for the Galaxy, and I don't even know if those were available YT
- 4:03So I'm going to say most of these are on the table. Nonetheless,
- 4:06eighty one plays, but in the end of December is pretty good. I
- 4:10got a long way toward the complete shebang. So that's cool. Yeah.
- 4:14I like a lot of those games. Some of them I don't have anymore.
- 4:15I got rid of Teraramstica see Pandemic Legacy season two. Once you're done
- 4:23with that, you're obviously done with it. I still have Ex Libris,
- 4:26though I haven't played in a long time. Yeah, so great, great
- 4:30first year. Eighty one out of one hundred is not bad. I did
- 4:32play it more than one hundred if you count, if you let me count,
- 4:35more than more than ten for the games that I played extra. But
- 4:39you don't do that. That's cheating, all right. So having done that,
- 4:42in twenty eighteen, I noticed that I was starting to play a lot
- 4:44of games online, and so I decided to keep track of both online and
- 4:48in person plays. But I did a double challenge. I did so in
- 4:54twenty nineteen. I did a hardcore challenge and a normal challenge. The hardcore
- 4:58challenge is where I pick ten games that I'm going to play ten times in
- 5:00a year, and I'm not allowed to change those games. I do get
- 5:03myself one freebie. I can decide at some point to swap out one game
- 5:08for another game. That's so it's hardcore, not quite hardcore, and then
- 5:13I did a normal challenge as well, like just looking at games I've played,
- 5:17including digital plays, did I get another ten for ten? That way
- 5:20at the start of my question. So in the hardcore challenge, I did
- 5:24complete it. I remember doing this. My daughter and I particularly really chowed
- 5:29down on one game on Kings of Aaron Steam. I think we played it
- 5:32six times in December so that we could complete the ten for ten. So
- 5:36I have Betrayal Legacy London second Edition, Cerebria, Legacy of Dragon, Holt,
- 5:43Sherlock, Holm's Consulting Detective Segrata, Gizmo's Kings of Aaron, Steam,
- 5:47Rainbow Knights, and Welcome To. I've played every one of those at least
- 5:51ten times. I think the most plays was Welcome To with fifteen plays,
- 5:57And originally I started with the game Rampage in there we got two plays of
- 6:00it in but I decided at some point I decided to swap that out four
- 6:02Welcome To. So that was my hardcore challenge. Then my normal challenge,
- 6:05I also got ten plays. Now this included online plays for these. This
- 6:10would be through the Ages Quicks, Wingspan Code Names, Duet, or the
- 6:15Harry Potter Code names. They are the same games I econom as one thing,
- 6:18eminent domain owner, Rim Cryptid Terriforming you Ours, Ray Colt, Chronicles
- 6:25of Crime, Concordia, Heist, and not alone. That actually might be
- 6:29more than ten games one, two, three, four, six, seven,
- 6:32eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen. So I
- 6:34actually had thirteen additional games that I played at least ten times if you count
- 6:39online plays. Side my hardcore challenge and my normal challenge. Succeeded at them
- 6:44both. Twenty nineteen is perhaps my most successful year as a ten for ten
- 6:48enthusiast. In twenty twenty, I started more actively using the ten for ten
- 6:55for both myself and my family. I let my family members choose games that
- 6:59we were going to put on the list. I think I did that in
- 7:00twenty nineteen as well. Maybe not. Maybe in twenty nineteen, I asked
- 7:05them if they had games they wanted to play, but I think I was
- 7:08picking. In twenty twenty, actually gave each family member a couple of games
- 7:12for the list. And here's how we did. In twenty twenty. As
- 7:15I said, this was an episode two hundred and we decided to do a
- 7:18twenty by five instead of a ten by ten. And here are the twenty
- 7:21games as well as how many times we played each one, and I only
- 7:25counted up until we succeeded, So we might have played some of these more
- 7:28than that, but I stopped really recording. Like for the example, the
- 7:31first one was Everdell. We played that five times. We might have played
- 7:33more than five times, but that's not recorded here. So Everdell five times,
- 7:39Buffy the Vampire Slayer, four Miskatonic School for Girls, two ex Libris
- 7:43three role for the Galaxy, A big goose egg, It's a Wonderful World
- 7:47two or Leons two Lovelace, Lovelace and Babbage. One rattle battle Grabbed the
- 7:51Loote two the Adventurers either the Temple of Horace or the Temple of Chalk or
- 7:57the Pyramid of Horus. Two plays Stuffed Fables zero the final flick Teer zero
- 8:03brass either one. Five plays Nanti Narking, three plays Polstar twenty eight to
- 8:07forty nine, Big Goose Egg, trick, carry On, four plays oh
- 8:09My Goods, four plays Elsium, two plays Shakespeare, three plays the Bloody
- 8:15in one play. So a dramatic failure there forty five percent, not even
- 8:20half of my plays that I was trying to go for. That was a
- 8:22good year, lots of fun games in there, but in terms of achieving
- 8:26the twenty by twenty not really. I'm not sure why exactly. We had
- 8:28a lot of time to play games twenty twenty. It was of course COVID
- 8:33year, so we were home a lot. We did play a lot of
- 8:35games at home, but maybe not these games anyhow. So that was fun,
- 8:41but I decided not to do a twenty by five again. It was
- 8:43too much, too much effort, or too much too complicated, I guess.
- 8:46Maybe on twenty twenty one, I went back to the ten by ten,
- 8:52but it was a family challenge, so I think I gave each of
- 8:56my family members one game they could pick, and then I picked the other
- 8:58six. And it was again not a great year, in fact, maybe
- 9:03the worst result of the ten for ten process. So we did Cafe Chaos,
- 9:09gloomh Haven, Jaws of the Lion Adventure games. So this is the
- 9:13line of games from Cosmos that looks sort of like Exit games, but they're
- 9:18a little different. Seven Wonders, Obsession, Victoriana, an Acrony Pandemic Legacy,
- 9:24Season zero, Underfalling Skies, and Cartographers. My best results there were
- 9:28seven Wonders with seven plays, Obsession with seven plays, Pandemic Legacy season zero
- 9:33was seven plays, and Cartographers was seven plays. All the others got less
- 9:37than that, for a total of thirty two percent complete. Though I did
- 9:41play every game at least once, so that was a nice uptick from last
- 9:45the previous year where I had a few goose eggs. That was a fun
- 9:48one, but I did learn that I need to be more deliberate in trying
- 9:50to get games played. But also maybe that just the breadth of games I
- 9:54like to play makes doing a ten for ten really hard, which part of
- 9:58the point of a ten for ten is to pick some games you really want
- 10:01to focus on. But I don't have the consistent gaming group that has that
- 10:05appetite. Like if I had a game group that I got together with once
- 10:07a week or twice a month, where it's the same people and we're all
- 10:11into the same games, and we could kind of agree, Okay, we're
- 10:15going to play these games a lot. I could do it, maybe,
- 10:18but often when I get time to play games at home, it's a variety.
- 10:20So you can see the games where I had a lot of Opportunity,
- 10:24Obsession, Pandemic, Legacy, Cartographers. Those are games my wife likes,
- 10:28so I was able to get those played at home. The other ones said
- 10:31much harder, so I was the twenty twenty one Family ten by ten Challenge.
- 10:33Now the twenty twenty two Family ten by ten Challenge was done much the
- 10:39same. On this one, again we picked a number of different games.
- 10:45I got their input, but I think I decided I don't know if I
- 10:48gave everybody picks or not, and it had much the same result. It
- 10:52was better. I ended up with fifty two percent instead of thirty one,
- 10:56but still significant drop. So we did Kingdom or Are Rifted in time.
- 11:00That was eight plays. We got the most closest on that gloom Haven Jaws,
- 11:03the lie In five, the Bureau of Investigation four so Clover for Cascadia
- 11:09two, The Animals of Baker Street four, Dice Minor ten. That's the
- 11:15only one I made all ten, Arcanova five, Libertalia, Winds of Gailcrest
- 11:20six, and Super Skill Pinball four Kade four. Now, Super Skill Pinball
- 11:24is a particularly lame one to have failed on, in the same way that
- 11:28Underfalling Skies is a lame one to fail on because those are solo games.
- 11:31I definitely should have time to play those, but I didn't make time,
- 11:35and so I came up short. Those are all fun games, though,
- 11:39and most of them are still in my collection. I also think it was
- 11:41sort of dumb to put Bureau the Bureau of Investigation, and Animals of Baker
- 11:46Street on there, since neither of those has ten plays in the box.
- 11:48I don't know what I was thinking putting them on the list. You literally
- 11:52couldn't play those ten times, so what was I thinking? Anyway? Maybe
- 11:56I put them on there without knowing how many plays were in the box either
- 12:00way, fifty two percent. So last year I decided to make a concerted
- 12:03effort to do more. I kind of went back to me governing it,
- 12:07and I decided to go a little different than game titles so the game instead.
- 12:11I chose designers, and I said, if I play a game by
- 12:13that designer, I get a score for it. And I decided to track
- 12:16it in two ways. I said I would keep track of how many plays
- 12:20I did online and keep track of how many plays I did in person,
- 12:24and kind of track it both ways. So if I look at the online
- 12:28plays, I'm only six short of one hundred if you combine in person and
- 12:33online plays. If you just look at our in person plays, I'm more
- 12:37at fifty percent or so. So here's the outcome. Martin Wallace I had
- 12:41more than ten online plays but only six in person. Vladimir Succi eight in
- 12:46person, more than ten online, Rynder Kanizia six in person, more than
- 12:50ten online Inca Brand only two in person. More than ten online to two
- 12:54in person were exit games. I think I thought I was going to pick
- 12:58up an INCA Brand game or two that I could play, and I never
- 13:01did. Phil Walker Harding is the only one I did not complete online.
- 13:05I only got six online plays with him and only three in person ones.
- 13:09Tom Lehman more than ten online, five in person, almost all res our
- 13:13Connor, I'm sure. Elizabeth Hargrave I got two in person and a total
- 13:18of eight online or up to eight, So again a little short there.
- 13:22Part of that too, I think I thought I would play more Wingspan than
- 13:26I did. Vladavato we went over ten online plays just two in person,
- 13:31both both code names. I believe Ube Rosenberg over ten online, two in
- 13:35person, and Karl Chuddick four in person over ten online, So, like
- 13:39I said, ninety eight percent online, only a couple in person for some
- 13:45of those. That was a really fun one though, because it was fun
- 13:46to look at different designers, but it ended up being not very purposeful,
- 13:50Like I would just play a game by a designer and market on the thing.
- 13:52I wouldn't. I wasn't actively seeking them out. So, as you'll
- 13:56recall, this year, we decided to do more categories like we were doing
- 13:58before, and the categories are divided up not by designer but by sort of
- 14:03game theme or other structuring device, and we're making pretty good progress. It
- 14:07might, in fact be too easy. I think I may add to the
- 14:11list the natural ten by ten as well. Just started keeping track of what
- 14:16games have I played ten times? Maybe I'll do a ten for ten online
- 14:20and a ten for ten in person. I don't know that I have any
- 14:22games that I'm playing in person that much, but we'll see. It'd be
- 14:26interesting to look. So that's kind of where I am right now. How
- 14:28are you tracking what games you play? How has your thinking about how to
- 14:31track games changed over time? Do you look at what games you're playing differently
- 14:37now than you did before? And how so I'd love to hear about it.
- 14:41Head over to board game Get Killed three two sixty nine and share your
- 14:43thoughts there. Thanks for joining me on my walk today. I hope your
- 14:48next walk because as plezzans as mine was. Good Bye, m deliver An
- 15:11Episode two. While I stroll around, I left my paper at home.
- 15:15Damn it okay. Brought to you by rattle Box
