- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. So today we're talking about
- 0:32Dale Carnegie and his view of how to stop worrying this.
- 0:38I obsess on reading old books and finding old information
- 0:42about things. I just, I don't know, it's a
- 0:44weird thing for me. I love old books.
- 0:46I love the information going back to the originals who wrote
- 0:49it. So here I am going through and
- 0:53looking at the science of worry and what it does for us.
- 0:56Because of course, even though I understand this at a very deep
- 0:59level, I always want to know more about it.
- 1:01I always want to know what other people think about it.
- 1:03And I run into this theory that an engineer came up with to help
- 1:10Dale Carnegie and engineer was name was Willis Carrier.
- 1:15And he comes up with this whole three-step process about
- 1:18banishing your worries. And he says, first you have to
- 1:20analyze the situation before you decide that it's the worst
- 1:25possible outcome. Like you, you want to look at it
- 1:27like, what's the go to the worst possible outcome?
- 1:30First analyze it and really accept the worst case scenario.
- 1:34Like, OK, if this is the worst case scenario, great.
- 1:38What does it actually mean? Figure that part out.
- 1:42Then you go to accepting the worst case scenario.
- 1:44OK, so this is what it is. Put it in perspective.
- 1:46Like if you were going to lose your job, OK, you're going to
- 1:49lose your job, but is that really the worst case scenario?
- 1:52You can always go get another one or look at it from the
- 1:55perspective of OK, this is it. And lastly, you improve the
- 2:02worst case scenario by reframing it as a positive.
- 2:06So you say, OK, well I can always go get another job.
- 2:10I can always find a better job and maybe I'll find one that's
- 2:13even happier. Now, I don't disagree with this
- 2:18this theory at all, and it's been taught to a lot of us over
- 2:21the years. But what happens if you are
- 2:23constantly catastrophizing all of these things and you don't
- 2:28move past the worst case scenario?
- 2:30Well, you know he Dale Carnegie's also famous for
- 2:34saying you know, the the worst case scenarios in life rarely
- 2:37happen. However, you know, understanding
- 2:39them helps you. And again, I, I don't disagree
- 2:43with any of this stuff because it's important to recognize what
- 2:47works for one person does not always work for another, which
- 2:50is why I love to give different points of view here.
- 2:53Where I personally struggle with this is that I would obsess on
- 2:58that catastrophe when I was in my, the height of my dysfunction
- 3:02of anxiety many years ago. I would obsess on that and I
- 3:06would just keep thinking about it, thinking about it and
- 3:08thinking about it and thinking about it.
- 3:10And when I ran across this, this document that I was reading and
- 3:15I picked it up and I was like, I remember this book.
- 3:17And then I remember that I read it so many years ago when I was
- 3:22deep in the weeds with that. And it did nothing for me.
- 3:25It did nothing for me because I just kept thinking about that
- 3:29worst case scenario. And even though I had a path of
- 3:33the better stuff, I didn't want to go there because my brain was
- 3:37too wired in fear. My, my brain was just hunkered
- 3:40down in something else. So I had to figure out other
- 3:45pathways out of it. And again, everyone is different
- 3:50with this. But for me, one of the things
- 3:52with this is, yes, I can think about the worst case scenario,
- 3:56but I no longer choose to allow myself to go into that space at
- 4:02all. Because if I do, I tend to
- 4:06obsess on it. And I can say, oh, I got to be
- 4:09cautious, got to do that, got to do that.
- 4:11For some people, it's OK. For me, it's not.
- 4:14So my strategy is, Nope, we're not going there.
- 4:17We're not even giving that little weed a piece of time to
- 4:21grow. Unacceptable.
- 4:23And I tell myself those words. What I say instead was use the
- 4:27powers that you have. Focus on the creativity, focus
- 4:31on, you know, you're connected. Focus on your imagination and
- 4:36make it use its powers for your greater good.
- 4:39That is a completely different framework.
- 4:42So I want to pull the weeds while they're tiny, even in my
- 4:45garden. I will go out there and I will
- 4:47take out weeds when they're super small as opposed to when
- 4:50they get bigger and thicker because I don't want to do that
- 4:52hard work. It's harder when those weeds are
- 4:54bigger. So yes, this is a possible
- 4:58theory to think about the worst case scenario, but for me, it
- 5:00does not work. I prefer this method.
- 5:03Pull the weeds while they're tiny.
- 5:05Kill the monster while it's small.
- 5:07Don't let yourself go there. Use your imagination for a
- 5:11higher, greater power. I personally believe that
- 5:14imagination and creativity are like some of the greatest
- 5:18magical gifts that we have been given by God in the universe.
- 5:22And if we're not using them in the right way, they, they can be
- 5:25used for evil. But I don't want to use them
- 5:27like that. So turn it around, don't think
- 5:31of it that way, and recognize that, hey, you know what?
- 5:34This is another possibility for me.
- 5:36Kill those monsters and weeds while they're tiny.
- 5:39All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 5:41hope this was helpful and I will see you all tomorrow.
- 5:44Bye.
