Transcript
- 0:00Yeah. Fuck yeah. My name is Tanner Wayne. I played drums for
- 0:03in Flames. We just released four Gone last February, I believe, and
- 0:09uh we're at home now. We're about to do an Asia Australia tour coming
- 0:13up. Really stoked, yatiful my thanks for joining us today. Fuck yeah,
- 0:18thank you for having me, mom by pleasure, both sides you say.
- 0:21In Flames return to Australia in one month's time for the Clash of the
- 0:24Titans tour with Creator starting in Adelaide on February third, eighth, then going
- 0:28through Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney and finishing in Brisbane or February the eight ays.
- 0:32So is this gonna be your first round shows for twenty twenty four,
- 0:36Yes, sir, yeah, and what a what a crazy one? I
- 0:39mean before we get to Australia, we do Indonesia, Japan, China,
- 0:45Singapore, Bang Talk India. Maybe I'm missing one. So it's gonna be
- 0:51where am I it's gonna I looked at some weathers and it's like all over
- 0:56the place, So it's gonna be a journey for sure. So I did
- 1:00some pretty big run of shows a lot night A long way from hind side.
- 1:03How do you prepare yourself mentally physically. I guess for a big stretch
- 1:06of shows A Wife from Behind low that it depends on uh, you know,
- 1:11at the end of the day, I'm trying to mentally strengthen myself at
- 1:14all times, but it really depends. It sucks that the older I get,
- 1:18the more I crave comfort, because me and my touring friends joke all
- 1:23the time about how comfortably we were when we first started, and how we
- 1:26had ninety bucks in our bank accounts and we're sitting there fucking eating microwaved hot
- 1:33dogs and just listening to our Walkman's just so fucking going for it. And
- 1:38now I'm seventeen years in and I kind of crave comfort, but tour is
- 1:44not very comfortable most of the time. So it's interesting, man. Yeah,
- 1:48I mean, I you know, I meditate every day, I read,
- 1:49I I do all the mental health things to make sure that I'm present
- 1:53and appreciative when I get to these moments. But it depends per country,
- 1:57you know, And it depends are we flying every day, what's going on?
- 2:00And Asia? Asia's rad, the fans are so rad, the fans
- 2:06are so respectful. I'm such a huge Asian food fan. That's good that
- 2:09that's gonna be incredible. So I'm really looking forward to this trip, right,
- 2:14So I love those lines, right, like you know, strangers to
- 2:15traveling nicurse. So, what are two non essential items you've always take with
- 2:21you on the ride? Essential items? The non essential? Non essential?
- 2:25Oh fuck, I don't know. Everything I bring is not essential. I
- 2:30uh. I try not to get to neurotic with like bringing shit, but
- 2:36I definitely have like a little pack on me, and most of it's kind
- 2:39of like comfort shit. I have like this Thai herbal inhaler that I actually
- 2:46use on stage every night too. It's just filled with herbs and it's like
- 2:51it blasts your nose when you sniff it, and it it helps with stomach
- 2:54aches and vertigo and pretty much everything you deal with with flying. So that's
- 3:00really cool. Really love that. And then fuck, I don't know,
- 3:04man, if you were to look at my bag, most people just like
- 3:06what the fuck? So many so many vitamins and protein powders and just fucking
- 3:12stupid shit. Because again with my mental health shit, like I want to
- 3:15feel like I have all the things on me, you know, and like
- 3:19when I'm in fucking Shanghai, China. Sometimes I might not have this medicine
- 3:23that gets me from being sick or like whatever. So I try to balance,
- 3:29you know, bringing enough stuff on me that I'm handled for whatever goes
- 3:32on, but also not too much to where I'm kind of just being a
- 3:36neurotic idiot. So all that is side bro. What can fans expect from
- 3:42in Flames on this tour. We have discussed playing a different set list than
- 3:47we have been so some songs. We're gonna pull some songs out from you
- 3:53know, the first records as well as the newer ones, and we're just
- 3:58gonna fucking go out out there and have a blast as we always do.
- 4:01And we're excited to see the fans, especially I've never done, never done
- 4:09a club tour with them in uh, Australia and some of the parts of
- 4:13Asia. So I'm looking forward to seeing a literal represent a representation of like
- 4:20the work we did at the festivals, right, like see who from the
- 4:24festivals as well as who already knew the band, like who we're going to
- 4:28bring out to these shows, and a charistraya with the mighty creative like it's
- 4:33a it's a match fight in heaven. But by from your point of view
- 4:36watching his I stychays, I'm gonna be very honest with you. Step one,
- 4:42I didn't choose them. Step two, I don't really know Creator that
- 4:46well, man like I, which is rad because like I get to see
- 4:51them, I get to see them play. That's gonna be my first like
- 4:55real moment of like liststening to them and like absorbing it. Right, And
- 5:00the purest form is a live show. It's just like when we did My
- 5:02Suga. We just did our second tour with My Sugar. I don't really
- 5:04listen to My Sugar before seeing them, so to see them live is like
- 5:12a crazy way to fucking absorb that for the first time. So I'm really
- 5:15looking to I'm really looking to hanging and meeting and watching Creator play. I'm
- 5:20also looking forward to not having to do the whole headliner set and get a
- 5:26little relaxation time in there. Yeah, so on that notemat like it is
- 5:30a co headline and tour. So does that mean that you guys are going
- 5:32to be playing alternating headline sets across the tour or does it mean you just
- 5:36be playing the same mantalm every night. I'm I haven't heard. I know
- 5:42nothing yet. I know for a fact, Oh hey, I know for
- 5:47a fact that we are going to be playing the same amount, but I'm
- 5:53not sure if we're gonna switch back and forth. But like I said in
- 5:56regards to Craving Comfort, if we can play first every night, I'm down
- 6:00because then I get to go try to catch up on some rest that I'll
- 6:03be lacking on this trip. I said, we suck bad this before.
- 6:08But you're released in Mice recent album Full of Odd last February Mite, So
- 6:12how are the fans reacted to that. It's interesting because we haven't done a
- 6:16lot of club stuff since releasing it, and the ones that we have,
- 6:25because that's the biggest representation of how the album's doing is how many people are
- 6:29coming to our shows, and we did a couple on this last one and
- 6:32it was insane. And then seeing the end of the year lists that we
- 6:38made in regards to people thinking it was their favorite album of the year,
- 6:42it's been awesome, man, it's been incredible, and it's been a pleasure
- 6:46to be a part of that of a record that that that is for me
- 6:54from an outsider's perspective. I know that, like a lot of the fans,
- 6:57Battles isn't their favorite record, and maybe I the Mask isn't their favorite
- 7:00record. But for me to be able to be fully a part of an
- 7:03album for my first time and have it be for Gone is an honor because
- 7:08I know that it holds its own way. I know that it's unique.
- 7:12I'm I'm honored that they let me do kind of whatever the fuck I want
- 7:15on it, and and I'm stoked that people seem to be receiving it really
- 7:19well rather than some sort of what the fuck is this backlash in regards to
- 7:26how it compares to the earlier records. So I'm really thankful that it's that
- 7:30it's it's gone so well. Yeah, and how much is that? Are
- 7:33you going to be playing live thing shows? We've been playing I guess at
- 7:40least like four songs a night from the record. It's tough because we don't
- 7:46really get a chance to rehearse that much, so like pulling out one that
- 7:49we've never done is kind of rare. We did and the transmission a handful
- 7:54of times last summer, and it was kind of unrehearsed, So it's kind
- 7:57of a dangerous game we play, but definitely the classics, you know,
- 8:00the big ones on the record, and yeah, we try to mix it
- 8:03up, so I'm hoping we do a lot. The bands always expect certain
- 8:07things from bands when they got to say them live, but as a band,
- 8:11what do you guys expect from your fans when they come to a show.
- 8:15We struggle with this because every night we get right in the room and
- 8:20like right when we're like after the show, right when we're in the green
- 8:22room, we kind of like, Okay, how was the hell was it?
- 8:24How was it? Well? How was your what did you think it
- 8:26was? What do you think it was like? And we're very honest with
- 8:31each other, and a lot of the time, each of us has a
- 8:33very different show. I could have had a shit show, my singer at
- 8:37a great show. So it's it's interesting thing where at the end of the
- 8:41day, we really want everyone to fucking mosh and jump and beat the shit
- 8:46out of each other and CrowdSurf, but we joke that we would never do
- 8:50that, So who the fuck are we to expect that? Right like or
- 8:56our frustratingly expect that. So when we go back backstage and we're like,
- 9:01oh, the crowd wasn't that great? We really honestly figure out was it
- 9:05great? Or are we selfish and pricks because at the end of the day,
- 9:09we'd be in the back of the room with a beer, not fucking
- 9:13moving at all, maybe not even clapping because we got a beer in our
- 9:16hands. So try to keep it real and it helps us because the last
- 9:20thing you want to do is get off stage and be hyper critical of how
- 9:24the fans were when in all reality, a lot of the shows we have,
- 9:26especially supporting the show, because sometimes the crowd would just stare at us,
- 9:31and even though that's not like the best physical representation of how we did,
- 9:33we know that they're absorbing us and that means they can come out again,
- 9:39you know what I mean. So at the end of the day,
- 9:41yeah, we want you to beat the shit out of each other, and
- 9:43we want you to go psycho like we're ten different slip knots on stage,
- 9:48but we understand that we fucking wouldn't do that, and who are we to
- 9:52pressure you, but please come and just have a fucking blast. We just
- 9:56want to see smiles and please clap after songs and at the end of the
- 9:58day. We're having such a blast with each other on stage that that's kind
- 10:01of what we focus on anyways. Okay, so in times, they're considered
- 10:07by many to be massively influential in the heavy metal scene in general. So
- 10:11what do you personally see as the band's major achievements to metal. Well,
- 10:16I've only been in the band six years and I've been lucky enough to do
- 10:20some psycho shit with them. In terms of achievements, I mean, I
- 10:24think a the biggest achievement is for them to be on their fourteenth album,
- 10:28right, And I say them because I wasn't in a lot of those records
- 10:33or the majority of those records, So the fact that they're still doing what
- 10:35they do is absolutely insane, especially at the level that we're doing it.
- 10:41But since I've been in the band, we got the headline Vakin, which
- 10:46was such a blast. That same weekend or maybe the following weekend, we
- 10:52played for over five hundred thousand people in Poland, which was absolutely incredible.
- 10:58There's a ton of stuff, man like even just the making all the all
- 11:01the end of the year lists last year and for Gone doing so well,
- 11:05that was incredible. So I can only speak from the achievements that we've done
- 11:09since I've been in the band. But just the fact that we're still able
- 11:13to do this and getting the tours that we're getting is you know, every
- 11:16year is a new celebration of the band's history. Cool. Sorry, what's
- 11:22thanks for? Inflames Off? You've finished the East Ride and shild Right,
- 11:26Uh, I get caught up and saying ship that I shouldn't, So I'm
- 11:31not gonna do that. I'm gonna catch myself. So yeah, I mean
- 11:33we go we do this tour. We're off for a couple of months.
- 11:39I know some festivals have been announced in May, so we're gonna do some
- 11:41American festivals in May, which is always a blast. And then we're off
- 11:48for the summer. And uh, that other tour was announced too, so
- 11:52I won't fuck that up. We're going on tour with We're going on tour
- 11:56in the fall, and it's really not make me fuck this up? Yeah,
- 12:01with Durch Enemy and soil work right, good, right, right,
- 12:05good? All right? Might? Well, thanks you time time to being
- 12:07a pleasure to speak with you. Might. I'll give you five minutes to
- 12:09go and gather your thoughts before the next interview. You're the fucking man.
- 12:13Tell your daughters to give their papa a hug and make sure they're appreciating you.
- 12:18All right now, rights all brid You enjoy yourself, I'll see you
- 12:22the Brisbane shiat. Fuck yeah, man, I can't wait to see you
- 12:26enjoy your day, brother,
