- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that Chuck Norris was chasing the Tyrannosaurus Rex. The
- 0:06Speaker 1: rex was not chasing the jeep.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Murray, Murray, you there.
- 0:09Speaker 1: You love sandwiches. Huh, Let's go to eighty.
- 0:13Speaker 3: It was bo.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Wow that Prime Time. Maybe I had a crush on
- 0:18Speaker 1: Betty Rubble. I honestly, until after the segment ended and
- 0:22Speaker 1: we went to commercial break, had no idea that Jonathan
- 0:24Speaker 1: Coachman was black. He caught them the game last night.
- 0:27Speaker 4: Although they won the game.
- 0:29Speaker 1: You're listening to to Gottson Company. I am very excited,
- 0:37Speaker 1: at nervous for this. Kelly Amante Hiller. She is a
- 0:40Speaker 1: nine time national champion as a coach, two times as
- 0:43Speaker 1: a player, eleven total national championships. She has made women's
- 0:47Speaker 1: lacrosse matter in the Midwest in Chicago, and it was
- 0:50Speaker 1: absolutely beautiful to see over the weekend. And she joins
- 0:53Speaker 1: us right now, Taylor. She's also in charge of my daughter,
- 0:57Speaker 1: So be careful with your questions. And Kelly, I'm telling
- 0:59Speaker 1: you right now the front end. If Taylor gets out
- 1:01Speaker 1: of line here, I will fire him.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Okay, Kelly, Okay, you got to get my last name right.
- 1:09Speaker 5: It's a Monty.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Oh Okay, I'm sorry. Well, listen, it's the New York accent.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I'm sorry about that.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Seriously, Stu, your daughter plays for her and you can't
- 1:20Speaker 3: get her last name correct. Let me start there, Yes, okay,
- 1:24Speaker 3: go ahead. When when you were recruiting Rachel, how much
- 1:28Speaker 3: of an impediment was stue to this whole thing of
- 1:32Speaker 3: if I get take Rachel, Stu has to come along.
- 1:36Speaker 2: For the rhyme.
- 1:37Speaker 5: I would say, probably pretty massive impediment.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Well, thank you.
- 1:46Speaker 5: I mean, his wife's really nice. We like her though.
- 1:49Speaker 3: His wife is a goddess without question. Angel in all
- 1:55Speaker 3: serious says how many how many parents do you get
- 1:58Speaker 3: of players that you recruit who coached their kids?
- 2:04Speaker 2: You know, you'd be surprised. I think a fair amount.
- 2:07Speaker 2: I think sometimes when uh, you know, their parents are coaches,
- 2:13Speaker 2: they kind of understand a little bit of the behind
- 2:17Speaker 2: the scenes of you know, what it takes.
- 2:20Speaker 5: To be successful. So sometimes we like that situation.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Because you know, they they really understand, you know, the
- 2:29Speaker 2: big picture of things. My daughter is a college wrestler,
- 2:33Speaker 2: and I think she's really benefited from the knowledge that
- 2:37Speaker 2: Scott and myself have and you know how we guide
- 2:42Speaker 2: her behind the scenes.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Michael, I'm I'm a I have a kinship to your daughter.
- 2:46Speaker 3: I was a college wrestler at Notre Dame that okay, awesome.
- 2:51Speaker 5: Times at the University of Iowa.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Yeah, Mike, aren't you in the Wrestling Hall of Fame?
- 2:56Speaker 6: I mean yeah, but unfortunately not as a wrestler. Yeah,
- 3:05Speaker 6: skip over that one.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Yes, Kelly, I know how much the sport means to you.
- 3:10Speaker 1: I know how much expanding this sport and growing this
- 3:12Speaker 1: sport means to you. So if you wouldn't mind just
- 3:15Speaker 1: kind of put us in your head before the national
- 3:17Speaker 1: championship game. The game is being played on your home
- 3:20Speaker 1: field at Northwestern in Evans State, and the final four
- 3:24Speaker 1: is being played in a non Atlantic Coast state for
- 3:27Speaker 1: the first time in the sports history. I can't imagine
- 3:31Speaker 1: how overwhelmed with pride you were right before the championship game,
- 3:34Speaker 1: just to see all of that.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Kelly, absolutely, I think you know. Honestly, before the Final four,
- 3:42Speaker 2: I was pretty nervous because not of competing, but I
- 3:49Speaker 2: wanted to make sure that we had fans in the stands,
- 3:52Speaker 2: and I just like had a moment of like, oh
- 3:55Speaker 2: my gosh, like they gave us this moment, they gave
- 3:58Speaker 2: us the opportunity to hoe was first time ever outside
- 4:02Speaker 2: of the Eastern time zone.
- 4:03Speaker 5: Will we pack these stands?
- 4:05Speaker 2: And you know, on Friday when people showed up, I
- 4:09Speaker 2: was like, this is awesome. I am just so grateful
- 4:14Speaker 2: for this moment. And then you know, it was just
- 4:17Speaker 2: tenfold on Sunday in the championship game to be able
- 4:20Speaker 2: to make it there and to see the crowd and
- 4:23Speaker 2: how many people were there to support not just us,
- 4:27Speaker 2: but the sport in general, and how much they appreciated,
- 4:32Speaker 2: you know, the competition on the field and how elite
- 4:37Speaker 2: both teams were.
- 4:39Speaker 5: It was a really cool situation.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Obviously, you've been involved in this game such a long time,
- 4:43Speaker 3: as Stull mentioned, two time national champ while playing at Maryland,
- 4:47Speaker 3: nine times now at Northwestern. So the first difference of
- 4:53Speaker 3: winning as a player and winning as a coach.
- 4:56Speaker 1: That's a great question.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Yeah, I would see. Uh, it's like the degrees of separation.
- 5:03Speaker 2: As a player, you have the most amount of control
- 5:06Speaker 2: over your situation, so you know, if something's going wrong,
- 5:10Speaker 2: you can just go out there and make an impact
- 5:13Speaker 2: and you know, or talk to one of your teammates
- 5:17Speaker 2: and make an impact and bring energy and make an impact.
- 5:21Speaker 5: And as a coach, it's much harder.
- 5:24Speaker 2: You have to help the players you know, understand their
- 5:29Speaker 2: own greatness, understand how you know, the way they carry
- 5:35Speaker 2: themselves makes a huge difference. And and obviously, like the strategy,
- 5:42Speaker 2: it's it's it's harder, which makes it even more satisfying.
- 5:47Speaker 2: And then as like a fan or a parent, it's
- 5:49Speaker 2: even harder because you have less of an influence.
- 5:54Speaker 5: And so you know you have to kind of figure out, okay.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Like what how can I make the impact to help
- 6:01Speaker 2: this team? And I actually have had all those experiences.
- 6:06Speaker 2: I've had it as a player, I've had it as
- 6:08Speaker 2: a coach and a parent, and it's just really cool
- 6:12Speaker 2: to be able to experience the highest level of sports
- 6:16Speaker 2: in different ways and figure out. I'm a big fan
- 6:20Speaker 2: of like figuring things out and figuring out how can
- 6:24Speaker 2: I be my best in this situation so I can
- 6:26Speaker 2: impact the people around me and help them be their best.
- 6:31Speaker 1: All championship pads are different, Kelly, All championship teams are different,
- 6:35Speaker 1: and this one that was certainly the case. If I
- 6:37Speaker 1: had told you after you lost to Ohio State that
- 6:40Speaker 1: you were going to win a national championship on your
- 6:43Speaker 1: home field, you would have told me what.
- 6:46Speaker 2: I would have said, I don't know if we're going
- 6:48Speaker 2: to make the NCAA tournament, Like I literally, I just
- 6:53Speaker 2: didn't know.
- 6:53Speaker 5: I just didn't know if this group had it.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Like the there wasn't a full comitment to what we
- 7:01Speaker 2: believe in at that point, and I think that the
- 7:04Speaker 2: results were kind.
- 7:05Speaker 5: Of indicative of that.
- 7:07Speaker 2: And I think that like we had great leaders but
- 7:12Speaker 2: maybe the leadership wasn't like impacting in the best way possible.
- 7:18Speaker 2: And I think we just had a lot of hard conversations.
- 7:20Speaker 2: And you know, your daughter, the seniors, the fifth years,
- 7:25Speaker 2: the younger players, they all committed, the parents, they committed
- 7:30Speaker 2: to what it takes to be great, and it was
- 7:35Speaker 2: just so cool to see it come to fruition, because
- 7:38Speaker 2: sometimes it doesn't always and to see them commit to
- 7:44Speaker 2: something bigger than themselves and then to see it come
- 7:48Speaker 2: to fruition on their home field. I'm just so proud
- 7:52Speaker 2: of them. And they are going to carry these lessons
- 7:56Speaker 2: and these memories for the rest of their lives.
- 7:58Speaker 1: That's senior class that I know. All senior classes are
- 8:01Speaker 1: very important to you, Kelly. That class, in particular, the
- 8:04Speaker 1: class of twenty six four Big Ten championships, four Big
- 8:09Speaker 1: Ten Title Game championships, four straight appearances in the National
- 8:13Speaker 1: Championship Game, and two final fours. Can you talk about
- 8:16Speaker 1: that group and just what they mean to you and
- 8:18Speaker 1: what they meant to that program.
- 8:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I think you know.
- 8:26Speaker 2: You actually sent me a video after the game of
- 8:30Speaker 2: one of the seniors she tore her acl in the
- 8:34Speaker 2: first quarter, and how her friends, her teammates supported her
- 8:41Speaker 2: through that, how she like supported everyone else in that
- 8:46Speaker 2: hardest moment.
- 8:49Speaker 5: It was just truly incredible.
- 8:51Speaker 2: The video was of them at the end of the game,
- 8:54Speaker 2: when everyone was rushing the field to celebrate. Her classmates
- 9:00Speaker 2: friends did not leave her, and she wanted them to
- 9:04Speaker 2: leave and join the crew, and they ended up carrying her.
- 9:08Speaker 5: Over over there to the celebration.
- 9:11Speaker 2: I think it just epitomizes what that group is about
- 9:15Speaker 2: and how no matter what, through thick and thin, they
- 9:19Speaker 2: were going to stick together. And when you have a
- 9:22Speaker 2: group like that, it makes a lasting impact on everyone.
- 9:27Speaker 2: And you know, they certainly were a special group, and
- 9:31Speaker 2: I think they did a great job after that first
- 9:34Speaker 2: stretch really stepping up and making an impact.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Mike, You'll love this because you and I love the
- 9:39Speaker 1: same things about sports. But Lucy did tear her knee up,
- 9:42Speaker 1: and she was she was being brought into the tent
- 9:45Speaker 1: and her three senior friends, I wouldn't even call them teammates,
- 9:49Speaker 1: just friends. They went inside the tent with her because
- 9:52Speaker 1: they were that concerned about her. How crazy is that?
- 9:55Speaker 2: Right?
- 9:55Speaker 3: That's just I mean, that's just teammates.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Yes said, yeah, awesome stuff, Kelly. I am hesitant to
- 10:13Speaker 1: do this. Here is Taylor's first question. He gets two
- 10:17Speaker 1: more after this. I think we'll see how the first
- 10:18Speaker 1: one goes. But go ahead, Taylor, fire away. She's very
- 10:22Speaker 1: friendly with Bill Belichick. By the way, Kelly, I will
- 10:24Speaker 1: tell you this, Taylor went to North Carolina, so you
- 10:28Speaker 1: have the last five no matter what. Yes, he was
- 10:30Speaker 1: a walk ball, he was a track star, and then
- 10:32Speaker 1: he walked onto the football team. And I'm telling you
- 10:34Speaker 1: right now, Taylor, Kelly loves a person who was strong
- 10:38Speaker 1: enough to walk on to a Division one football team.
- 10:41Speaker 1: So she's already impressed. Don't ruin this relationship you have
- 10:43Speaker 1: with her.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Go ahead, and.
- 10:44Speaker 5: Those are my favorite people, Taylor, Kelly.
- 10:47Speaker 4: I was also rooting for Rachel Stu Gotts. Doesn't believe
- 10:50Speaker 4: me when I say I wasn't rooting for my school.
- 10:52Speaker 4: I was rooting for Rachel. But when you took the
- 10:56Speaker 4: Northwestern job in the early two thousands, and peopo are saying, like,
- 11:01Speaker 4: how tough it is to build Northwestern into what you've
- 11:04Speaker 4: built it. Did you have any concerns about being able
- 11:06Speaker 4: to win there? Or can you not even let those
- 11:09Speaker 4: thoughts in your mind when you have that big of
- 11:12Speaker 4: a turnaround to build?
- 11:15Speaker 2: You know, I had just come off an incredible playing career.
- 11:19Speaker 2: I was actually still playing when I took the job
- 11:22Speaker 2: for the USA team, and I was young. I was
- 11:25Speaker 2: only twenty five, so I was young enough to think
- 11:27Speaker 2: that I could do anything that I wanted to and
- 11:32Speaker 2: no one was.
- 11:32Speaker 5: Going to stop me. And I've never led a thought
- 11:35Speaker 5: of doubt.
- 11:36Speaker 2: I was like, Northwestern University, this is one of the
- 11:39Speaker 2: greatest universities in the world, and we are right on
- 11:43Speaker 2: the lake. We have this the most beautiful place, Like,
- 11:47Speaker 2: I know how to coach, Why can't I build a champion?
- 11:51Speaker 5: We can do this. And I think it.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Was just that, you know, almost unrealistic optimism that started
- 11:58Speaker 2: this thing and got that first group to really believe
- 12:02Speaker 2: that they could achieve anything that they wanted to.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Mikey A is upset with Taylor because his opinion the
- 12:07Speaker 1: other day he was he was really going at your husband,
- 12:10Speaker 1: who's my friend, Scott Hiller. He would saying, you know,
- 12:13Speaker 1: he compared it to building a national championship skiing team
- 12:16Speaker 1: in Florida, which I thought was the property.
- 12:18Speaker 4: I just thought it was a little dramatic.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Taylor said it was a little dramatic, and that's really
- 12:21Speaker 1: what he wanted to ask you, Kellyan.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Scott, Scott, He's not He's not a dramatic guy, so
- 12:28Speaker 2: that's pretty shocking.
- 12:30Speaker 5: But I would agree that might be a dramatic analogy
- 12:33Speaker 5: for Shucky.
- 12:35Speaker 3: I would say, so go ahead, you take over there
- 12:39Speaker 3: in two and that was your only losing record. You've
- 12:42Speaker 3: had a winning record every year. You win your first
- 12:44Speaker 3: title in O five going undefeated, you run off five
- 12:48Speaker 3: in a row and an nine going undefeated. I know
- 12:51Speaker 3: this may be hard because there's nine of them, but
- 12:54Speaker 3: difference of the first title again twenty five years ago,
- 12:59Speaker 3: and this title or twenty years ago, I should say,
- 13:03Speaker 3: and this title kind of the difference in feeling for you.
- 13:08Speaker 2: I would say that like every single person on our
- 13:10Speaker 2: team was like Taylor, like that walk on not necessarily recited,
- 13:16Speaker 2: but had just tremendous potential.
- 13:21Speaker 5: On that first team.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Every single kid, no one was a name, and we
- 13:26Speaker 2: just loved each other and built something special together and
- 13:30Speaker 2: really just believed in each other.
- 13:32Speaker 5: And I think, you.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Know, now, we've obviously got a tradition of success in
- 13:39Speaker 2: our program, and I think that there's a lot of similarities,
- 13:44Speaker 2: to be honest, to the beginnings of our program with
- 13:48Speaker 2: how this group carried themselves. But I think the athlete
- 13:54Speaker 2: is so different today than they were back then, and
- 14:01Speaker 2: how I coach, honestly is very different from when I
- 14:04Speaker 2: first started. So I would say, you know, the biggest
- 14:09Speaker 2: thing that I'm most proud of, I would say these
- 14:12Speaker 2: two championships, my first and this one were so so special,
- 14:17Speaker 2: and just being able to see the difference in how
- 14:21Speaker 2: we've grown the sport and how we've grown the following
- 14:25Speaker 2: in the Midwest and beyond, that's probably the coolest part
- 14:30Speaker 2: to compare the two championships.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Kelly, I know, one of the big things you and
- 14:34Speaker 1: Scottie preach is you never know when we're gonna call
- 14:36Speaker 1: your number. And so back to Lucy, who went down,
- 14:41Speaker 1: you called Gabby's number number nine She's a freshman and
- 14:44Speaker 1: she was a bit up and down, but everyone could
- 14:46Speaker 1: see the talent. You called her number in a national
- 14:49Speaker 1: championship game. She's a freshman and she delivers four goals
- 14:53Speaker 1: in the second half. It was so cool to see.
- 14:55Speaker 1: You had to be so proud of that moment.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Yeah, it was incredible. I would say that's pretty accurate. Like,
- 15:02Speaker 2: I think we saw Gabby's talent, but it wasn't it
- 15:05Speaker 2: wasn't very consistent.
- 15:07Speaker 5: I think she was.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Struggling to find her mindset and her right mentality. And
- 15:13Speaker 2: I think that's back to that senior class and the
- 15:16Speaker 2: older players, like they were really helping her and mentoring her,
- 15:19Speaker 2: and you know, uh the coaching staff as well, and
- 15:24Speaker 2: you know, I think that she just kept.
- 15:27Speaker 5: Kept plugging away.
- 15:28Speaker 2: And I actually have the opportunity to work with her
- 15:31Speaker 2: every day just because I'm on the draw with her,
- 15:33Speaker 2: and I could just see, like the week of the
- 15:36Speaker 2: Final four, we were doing draws and I was like, Gabby,
- 15:40Speaker 2: if you want to go shoot, you can go shoot,
- 15:43Speaker 2: and She's like, no, I want to stay there, stay here.
- 15:46Speaker 5: I just love this. I love working with you guys.
- 15:49Speaker 2: And she knew there was probably not an opportunity or
- 15:53Speaker 2: not not much of an opportunity for her to be
- 15:56Speaker 2: on the draw in that game. But I think she
- 15:58Speaker 2: just found a way to love the process and that's
- 16:02Speaker 2: really where the sweet spot is.
- 16:04Speaker 5: And I'd like to believe that is how she.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Was able to step into that game and have that
- 16:11Speaker 2: level of success. It wasn't a singular thing. It wasn't
- 16:14Speaker 2: just her. It was a lot of people that contributed
- 16:16Speaker 2: to that.
- 16:17Speaker 1: All right, we'll get you out here in just a
- 16:18Speaker 1: second question number two for Taylor.
- 16:20Speaker 4: Go ahead, Kelly. I feel like the true sign of
- 16:23Speaker 4: a successful program is when you have assistants leave to
- 16:26Speaker 4: become head coaches elsewhere and try to re establish that
- 16:29Speaker 4: culture that they had. If you had an assistant coach leave,
- 16:33Speaker 4: would you consider Stu Gotts for an opening because he
- 16:35Speaker 4: was the big man on campus that she's a Clark University.
- 16:37Speaker 1: I'm sorry, you're fired.
- 16:41Speaker 5: I would say that.
- 16:44Speaker 2: I think having a player on the team, I think
- 16:49Speaker 2: that would be really challenging, honestly, like we try to
- 16:53Speaker 2: consider maybe having our own daughter on the team. But ultimately,
- 16:58Speaker 2: like I'm so happy that she chose a different path
- 17:01Speaker 2: because I think it just would have.
- 17:04Speaker 5: Put a lot more pressure on her.
- 17:07Speaker 2: And I think if Stu came and coach with us,
- 17:11Speaker 2: I think it would put additional pressure on Rachel. And
- 17:15Speaker 2: I think she's just such a phenomenal girl and leader
- 17:18Speaker 2: in this program that I would want her to have
- 17:21Speaker 2: the best possible experience, and I think that might be
- 17:26Speaker 2: without him.
- 17:27Speaker 3: Wow, that's a great That is such a nice answer,
- 17:30Speaker 3: because you fire him after day one.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Listen, Kelly knows this, Lord knows. I tried, and Kelly
- 17:38Speaker 1: was right, and she did enjoy it more than had
- 17:41Speaker 1: I with me not being there, had I been there.
- 17:44Speaker 1: I'm not gonna let let Taylor ask a third question
- 17:46Speaker 1: because that one was dicey, and so I have done
- 17:48Speaker 1: with you. Kelly, thank you so much. Congratulations to you.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Thank you for a wonderful weekend. There were so many
- 17:54Speaker 1: emotional moments and they all came courtesy of you, your
- 17:57Speaker 1: staff and everyone at Northwestern. A wonderful weekend and congratulations
- 18:02Speaker 1: nine national championships, Kelly, your coach k I mean, seriously,
- 18:06Speaker 1: get your chefsky out of here.
- 18:07Speaker 4: Coach Ky you.
- 18:10Speaker 5: Well, thank you guys for the last today.
- 18:13Speaker 2: It was awesome being on here and in all seriousness, no,
- 18:17Speaker 2: thank you so much for being a great parent of
- 18:19Speaker 2: our program and and all that you do.
- 18:22Speaker 5: To support us.
- 18:23Speaker 2: You're there every everywhere we turn, and that means a
- 18:27Speaker 2: ton to us.
- 18:27Speaker 5: So thank you so much.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Well, that's very kind of you. Thank you, Kelly.
- 18:30Speaker 3: We appreciate it.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Taylor's third question was he's not happy with Belichick. He
- 18:33Speaker 1: knows you're very friendly with Belichick. If you have a
- 18:36Speaker 1: spot on the coaching staff Northwestern, can you get Belichick
- 18:39Speaker 1: out of Carolina? And to Northwestern?
- 18:40Speaker 5: Did you do texting with him the other day? He said,
- 18:43Speaker 5: everything is great.
- 18:44Speaker 2: They're undefeated right now, so everything is fantastic.
- 18:50Speaker 1: All right, Kelly, congratulations again and we appreciate everything. We'll
- 18:54Speaker 1: talk to you soon
- 18:56Speaker 5: All right, gokats all right,
