- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Emily is back from her long weekend on Seneca Lake and you know Emily Sight is no stranger to our stage all the way from the finger lakes.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: It's the Maharella sisters.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: And you know what they say about the finger lakes.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: At first you might only want one finger, but soon you'll be asking for all five.
- 0:20SPEAKER_03: Wait a second.
- 0:21SPEAKER_03: Fun fact do you know how many finger lakes there actually are?
- 0:24SPEAKER_03: It's not five.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think I once knew this.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: Isn't that seven?
- 0:29SPEAKER_03: Higher.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: Oh, maybe twelve.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: Lower?
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: Okay, ten.
- 0:33SPEAKER_03: Eleven.
- 0:34SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 0:35SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 0:35SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 0:36SPEAKER_03: And and the reason why this came up is you got one extra.
- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 0:40SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 0:41SPEAKER_03: The reason this part.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: Find a bowling ball with that.
- 0:44SPEAKER_03: There's an at the at the Airbnb, there was a cutting board and it had all the finger lakes on it.
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: And I was like, wait a second.
- 0:50SPEAKER_03: I kind of forgot there was like a Wasco, a Tisco, a Bisco, and a Bisco.
- 0:56SPEAKER_03: I'm not sure.
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the forgotten fingerlakes.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: We have the shining star of Seneca, and then there's the redheaded stepchild, Awasco.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: I had I had said with school getting back in for Pennsylvania, it starts coming back in like tomorrow, the next day.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: You know, everybody's staggering their way back in.
- 1:13SPEAKER_03: I am kind of excited to have a normal schedule.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's that'll be nice.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: Uh but oh, and that and on top, I'll save that comment.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: Hold on.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: I got something to say about normal schedules.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: Uh but that being said, has anybody ever skipped the first day of school?
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: And I'm not saying because mom and dad booked a cruise and it just happened to be that was the family vacation and it overlapped by like a day.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: That was a planned thing or misplanned.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: You should know your school schedule.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: But sometimes you get a deal.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: No, I'm just talking like it's gonna be 80 degrees.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: And you're like, no, my my summer's not gonna end.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: And Doug texted this, he goes, Everyone loves syllabus day.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: What is syllabus day?
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: Syllabus is your outline of your uh basically everything you're going to learn.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: So it'll be like how clearly you know how that worked for me.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: Whenever we had whenever when I was in college, we had something where we had to sign basically saying, we received the syllabus and you understand you know, is is there any questions?
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: You can email the professor.
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: Try to follow the rules.
- 2:16SPEAKER_03: Right, exactly.
- 2:16SPEAKER_03: But basically it was saying, yes, I've received it, yes, I've looked it over, and I'm gonna sign the like the back page or something, whatever it was.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: Now, so did you skip the first day?
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: Me and like four other friends.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: We were like, okay, we were like we went to school, but then we left halfway through the day.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: Oh we were like, we're done with school, we don't want to be here anymore, so we just left during lunch period.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: Two of them failed and went back to school and got in trouble.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: Of course.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: And then me and my best friend, we kept going and we ended up going swimming for the day.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: No! Oh my gosh.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: You see, that's still their summer left.
- 2:57SPEAKER_03: Now, the thing you had mentioned is something a little bit different too.
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: That Gavin has a friend, if there's a half day that he just doesn't go.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he just doesn't go.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: Or they don't go.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: I don't know if it was a boy or girl.
- 3:07SPEAKER_03: Anyway, so the uh for us at least, back in my day.
- 3:11SPEAKER_03: Back in your day, you couldn't miss X amount of days of school or you would fail.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: So they still count as him missing a day of school, right?
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you you miss out on the side.
- 3:21SPEAKER_03: There's a lot of half days.
- 3:22SPEAKER_03: I know that we are constantly talking about half days.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: Is this kid going to the next grade or not?
- 3:28SPEAKER_03: Well, yeah, yeah, they are.
- 3:29SPEAKER_03: Oh, because it's like a no child left behind situation.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: I I don't know the the politics of it or if they're underneath the if they're underneath the the limit on that.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: And you don't also know how well he's doing in school.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: I also I know I think he's a pretty decent student, decent enough.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'm not saying so good that it's like warranted where it's like you just don't even need a half day.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: I mean, I always look at it.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: Here's the reason I do this with Gavin.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: I'll be very honest with you.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: I'm from an era where you have responsibilities and you have to stick up to your responsibilities.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: That's what I think too.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: That's why I'm like it's a half day of school, you go.
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: Uh I mean, that's just I don't care if it's, you know, doing nothing there.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: The point to it is you have the responsibility to go.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: That is my belief.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: And it teaches him in my mind that you don't just get to be like, I don't feel like doing it, so I'm just gonna skip out on doing it.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's part of the goal that I have of the parenting part of why I do it.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: Could I have let him easily skip the last three days of school?
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Jeez, yes.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: But I'm like, no, you are gonna go.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: You're gonna continue to get up like I do.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: And you're gonna go because it's what is responsible and it maybe it'll learn you something down the line of living your life that way.
- 4:43SPEAKER_03: Well, I know I have a girlfriend who always says, whenever my kids have a half day, it's harder than as if they don't have the whole day off.
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: Because for her to figure out who's gonna pick them up at a random time in the middle of the day is really difficult for her.
- 4:56SPEAKER_03: But as opposed to if she can have like grandma watch them all day, then she doesn't will have to have grandma pick them up at three different schools because they're three different ages and they're getting out at three different times.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: There is the inconvenience factor of half days or you know, or even snow days, you know, when we get the two hour.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: Frankly, I'd rather not have a two-hour delay.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: If you feel that you're gonna have a two-hour delay, just cancel the whole day.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: Because I mean, you're doing this juggling act of of trying to get things around.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: And then even for the parents, by the time you get in to your job, you are just like, I've been through this tornado.
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: I can't focus on what I'm doing.
- 5:32SPEAKER_03: Okay, this text came in.
- 5:33SPEAKER_03: Let's say they said they got rid of no child left as of this year per a New York teacher mother, which means that little kid, he cannot keep skipping those half days.
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I guess I want to know what does it mean that they got rid of.
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: I guess I never really understood the whole no child left behind versus uh, you know, the the official what they had versus getting rid of it because I'm like, well, I'm not gonna have to worry about that, but I because I'm gonna teach my kids some responsibility, you know?
- 6:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but that's not just it's not just responsibility.
- 6:02SPEAKER_03: It's even if your grades suck, you're still going to the next grade.
- 6:06SPEAKER_03: I think the parent has to fight to keep them in the the the the current grade.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: I mean, I can tell you this.
- 6:11SPEAKER_02: I've had an a principal and uh a school counselor literally say holding a kid back really doesn't work because what happens is is it all ends up catching up to them eventually anyway.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: So I've literally heard that.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: Now maybe everyone's situation's a little different, but you know, if the old adage of, well, they really struggled this year, they're just not getting it, maybe one more time.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: They I guess the theory is it really doesn't work like that.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: Like if you want them to get it, you gotta do the tutoring thing or you gotta work close with them.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: Yes, or the school has to, you have to get the school to do uh, you know, some more stuff.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: So I I'm fine.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: You know, uh yeah, you don't just get a free pass because, you know, that's the way we did it.
- 6:51SPEAKER_03: Also, I like this one from Chad who says, uh, isn't the first day usually on a Thursday or Friday?
- 6:56SPEAKER_03: Well, for a PA it's on a Wednesday.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because it's by like by Thursday or Friday, it's like, all right.
- 7:01SPEAKER_03: You don't have to.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, what am I doing here?
- 7:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: And then Doug comes back again.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: You skip school, you end up on morning radio.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
