- 0:24Speaker 1: Chapter one. My father meets the Cat. One cold, rainy day,
- 0:30Speaker 1: when my father was a little boy, he met an
- 0:33Speaker 1: old alley cat on the street. The cat was very
- 0:37Speaker 1: drippy and uncomfortable, so my father said, would you like
- 0:40Speaker 1: to come home with me? This surprised the cat. She
- 0:45Speaker 1: had never met anyone who cared about old alley cats,
- 0:49Speaker 1: but she said, I'd be very much obliged if I
- 0:52Speaker 1: could sit by a warm furnace and perhaps have a
- 0:55Speaker 1: saucer of milk. We have a very nice furnace to
- 0:59Speaker 1: sit by, some father, and I'm sure my mother has
- 1:02Speaker 1: an extra saucer of milk. My father and the cat
- 1:06Speaker 1: became good friends, but my father's mother was very upset
- 1:11Speaker 1: about the cat. She hated cats, particularly ugly old alley cats.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Elmer elevator. She said to my father, if you think
- 1:22Speaker 1: I'm going to give that cat a saucer of milk,
- 1:25Speaker 1: you're very wrong. Once you start feeding straight alley cats,
- 1:29Speaker 1: you might as well expect to feed every stray in town,
- 1:32Speaker 1: and I am not going to do it. This made
- 1:36Speaker 1: my father very sad, and he apologized to the cat
- 1:40Speaker 1: because his mother had been so rude. He told the
- 1:44Speaker 1: cat to stay anyway, and that somehow he will bring
- 1:47Speaker 1: her saucer of milk each day. My father fed the
- 1:51Speaker 1: cat for three weeks, but one day his mother found
- 1:55Speaker 1: the cat's saucer and the cellar, and she was extremely angry.
- 2:00Speaker 1: She whipped my father and threw the cat out the door.
- 2:03Speaker 1: But later on my father sneaked out and found the cat. Together,
- 2:08Speaker 1: they went for a walk in the park and tried
- 2:11Speaker 1: to think of nice things to talk about. My father said,
- 2:15Speaker 1: when I grow up, I'm going to have an aeroplane.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Wouldn't it be wonderful to fly just anywhere you might
- 2:21Speaker 1: think of? Would you like to fly very very much,
- 2:24Speaker 1: asked the cat. I certainly would. I'd do anything if
- 2:28Speaker 1: I could fly, well, said the cat, If you really
- 2:32Speaker 1: like to fly that much, I think I know a
- 2:35Speaker 1: sort of way you might get to fly while you're
- 2:37Speaker 1: still a little boy. You mean, you know, or I
- 2:41Speaker 1: can get an aeroplane. Well, not exactly an aeroplane, but
- 2:45Speaker 1: something even better. As you can see, I'm an old
- 2:49Speaker 1: cat now. My younger days I was quite a traveler.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Traveling days are over, but last spring I just took
- 2:57Speaker 1: one more trip and sailed to the island of Tangerina,
- 3:01Speaker 1: stopping at the port of Cranberry. Well, it just so
- 3:04Speaker 1: happened that I missed the boat, and while waiting for
- 3:07Speaker 1: the next I thought i'd look around a bit. I
- 3:10Speaker 1: was particularly interested in the place called Wild Island, which
- 3:15Speaker 1: we passed on our way to Tangerina. Wild Island and
- 3:19Speaker 1: Tangerina are joined together by a long string of rocks,
- 3:23Speaker 1: but people never go to Wild Island because it's mostly
- 3:27Speaker 1: jungle and inhabited by very wild animals. So I decided
- 3:31Speaker 1: to go across the rocks and explore it for myself.
- 3:35Speaker 1: It certainly is an interesting place, but I saw something
- 3:39Speaker 1: there that made me want to weep. End of chapter one.
