- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. Great to have you company.
- 0:15It is Monday, it is the 29th of April and you have joined me at
- 0:20the start of another week. Good on you.
- 0:22I hope you're going well. Hope your weekend was a time of
- 0:25a little bit of rest and relaxation and replenishment
- 0:28before the madness of the week ahead.
- 0:30If that's how your life rolls, or if your week ahead looking
- 0:33cruisy, hey, that's fantastic. Because unfortunately the week
- 0:37ahead is not looking crazy if you are King David.
- 0:42Because this is the week where the consequences of his sin is
- 0:47going to play out and his family is going to continue to unravel,
- 0:51and it will end with great sadness.
- 0:54However, it is part of a much bigger story which does not end
- 0:59with sadness. No, no, friend, you know that it
- 1:01ends very well with us sitting here living under a new covenant
- 1:04of grace and forgiveness under the glorious kingship of our
- 1:08God. So we will hold on to that as we
- 1:11go through this week. But let's do it, shall we?
- 1:14Come, Holy Spirit, teach us. Guide us.
- 1:18Reveal yourself to us as we read this chapter.
- 1:24All right, friends, let's do it. Let's read together Second
- 1:27Samuel, Chapter 16, when David had gone a little
- 1:41beyond the summit of the Mount of Olives.
- 1:43Ziba, the servant of Mephibosheth, was waiting there
- 1:46for him. He had two donkeys loaded with
- 1:49200 loaves of bread, 100 clusters of raisins, 100 bunches
- 1:54of summer fruit, and a wineskin full of wine.
- 1:58What are these for the king? Arciba?
- 2:01Siva replied that donkeys are for the King's people to ride
- 2:05on, and the bread and summer fruit are for the young men to
- 2:08eat. The wine is for those who become
- 2:11exhausted in the wilderness. And where is Mephibosheth,
- 2:15Saul's grandson? The king asked him.
- 2:17He stayed in Jerusalem. Ziba replied.
- 2:21He said. Today I will get back the
- 2:24Kingdom of my grandfather, soul in that case, the king told
- 2:29Ziba. I give you everything
- 2:31Mephibosheth owns. I bow before you, Zebra replied.
- 2:37May I always be pleasing to you, my Lord the king.
- 2:42As King David came to Bahram, a man came out of the village
- 2:46cursing them. It was Shimei, son of Guerra,
- 2:49from the same clan as Saul's family.
- 2:51He threw stones at the king and the King's offices and all the
- 2:55mighty warriors who surrounded him.
- 2:57Get out of here, you murderer, you scoundrel.
- 3:00He shouted at David. The Lord is paying you back for
- 3:03all the bloodshed and soul's clan.
- 3:06You stole his throne, and now the Lord has given it to your
- 3:09son Absalom. At last you will taste some of
- 3:12your own medicine, for you are a murderer.
- 3:16Why should this dead dog curse my Lord?
- 3:19The king Abishai, son of Zeruiah, demanded.
- 3:23Let me go over and cut off his head.
- 3:25No, the king said. Who asked your opinion?
- 3:29You sons of Zeruiah? If the Lord has told him to
- 3:32curse me, who are you to stop him?
- 3:35Then? David said to Abishai and to all
- 3:37his servants. My own son is trying to kill me.
- 3:41Doesn't this relative of Saul have even more reason to do so?
- 3:46Leave him alone and let him curse, for the Lord has told him
- 3:49to do it. And perhaps the Lord will see
- 3:52that I am being wronged, and will bless me because of these
- 3:55curses to day. Sir David and his men continued
- 3:58down the road, and Shamah kept pace with them on a nearby
- 4:02hillside, cursing and throwing stones and dirt at David.
- 4:07The king and all who were with him grew weary along the way, so
- 4:11they rested when they reached the Jordan River.
- 4:14Meanwhile, Absalon and all the army of Israel arrived at
- 4:18Jerusalem accompanied by a heifer, fell.
- 4:21When David's friend Hushai the Archite arrived, he went
- 4:25immediately to see Absalom. Long live the king, he
- 4:29exclaimed. Long live the king.
- 4:33Is this the way you treat your friend David?
- 4:36Absalom asked him. Why aren't you with him?
- 4:40I'm here because I belong to the man who was chosen by the Lord
- 4:44and by all the men of Israel, who?
- 4:46Shi replied. And anyway, why shouldn't I
- 4:49serve you just as I was your father's adviser?
- 4:52Now I will be your advisor. Then Absalom turned to a Heather
- 4:57Fell and asked him what should I do next?
- 5:00A higher Fell told him, Go and sleep with your father's
- 5:04concubines, for he has left them here to look after the palace.
- 5:08Then all Israel will know that you have insulted your father
- 5:12beyond hope of reconciliation, and they will throw their
- 5:16support for you. So they set up a tent on the
- 5:19palace roof where everyone could see it, and Absalom went in and
- 5:24had sex with his father's concubines.
- 5:27Absalom followed a hyphen's advice, just as David had done.
- 5:31For every word, a hyper fell spoke seemed as wise as though
- 5:35it had come directly from the mouth of God.
- 5:48Ah, Lord, we see so much brokenness in the story.
- 5:52Relationships fractured, old hurts, dredged up family
- 5:58rivalries. Lord, we know these things too
- 6:02well. But as we read this story, we
- 6:06know, no matter how bad things get, that you are greater than
- 6:11every problem they will face and every problem we will face in
- 6:15our lives. So we cling fast to you, our
- 6:20vast and powerful and merciful and kind.
- 6:24God restore us, make us whole by the power of your Spirit, so
- 6:32that we can serve you and share your love and grace and mercy
- 6:36and forgiveness with those we encounter today.
- 6:41We praise you and we ask all the things in the saving name of
- 6:45Jesus. Amen.
