- 0:06Hello, friends, and welcome back to the Woman at the Well Ministries podcast.
- 0:10With Kimberly Miller, where we believe that every man, woman,
- 0:14boy, and girl must come to Jesus just like the woman at the well in John chapter four.
- 0:20Our highest priority is helping you experience the reality of God in your everyday life.
- 0:26Whether you're listening in our app, on your favorite podcast platform,
- 0:30or on our website at watwm.org, we invite you to sit down with us as we open
- 0:37the scriptures to learn more about who God is and to strengthen your daily walk.
- 1:02In this episode of the Woman at the Well Ministries podcast,
- 1:06join Kimberly Miller and Erica Close in a conversation as we walk with Jesus.
- 1:10In today's conversation, we're chatting about what it means in our daily lives
- 1:15to build our foundation on the solid rock.
- 1:19Well, thank you all so much for joining us today.
- 1:23My name is Erica, and I am here with Kimberly. Hello, and I am so excited because
- 1:29today we are talking about what it means to build our foundation on the solid rock, which is Jesus.
- 1:37And we are following Monday's podcast. So if you haven't listened yet,
- 1:44we absolutely encourage you to go back to Monday's podcast. That was episode 588.
- 1:50It was called Build a Firm Foundation. And so today we're just talking about what that looks like.
- 1:56That's what we love to do on our Wednesday podcasts, is to take that Bible teaching
- 2:01from Monday and look at it in our daily lives, like in full application.
- 2:08What does it really look like if we follow whatever we learned about on Monday.
- 2:14So this Monday, we read the story of the wise man and the foolish man.
- 2:21And the wise man built his house on the rock and the foolish man built his house on the sand.
- 2:27And I think everybody sort of knows what happens and knows the account of the story.
- 2:34So one of the things that I love so much, and you mentioned this really early
- 2:38on in the podcast, was just that your foundation is.
- 2:43Evident. Amen. And people can see it. And if you know me, you know that I love houses.
- 2:51I love TV shows about houses and building houses and how houses are built.
- 2:56And I love, I love houses.
- 2:59And what is true about a house is true about us too.
- 3:04Amen. If a house has a problem with its foundation, you're going to see it on the outside.
- 3:12You're going to see it up above the foundation. And it's a critical problem.
- 3:16It's a critical problem.
- 3:18If you have a structural foundation problem in your house, it is tens of thousands of dollars to fix.
- 3:29And if you don't fix it, it's only a matter of time until the house deteriorates
- 3:34more. Right. You lose the whole house.
- 3:36And so with our spiritual house, we have to build that on the foundation of
- 3:43the rock of Jesus Christ.
- 3:45And if we have a foundation problem, we are not going to be able to withstand
- 3:52the storms of life. Absolutely.
- 3:55We might be able to hide it for a little bit, right? Sometimes we can act.
- 3:59Correct. You might hide it for a little bit, but it's not going to last.
- 4:03Because your actions have got to align with your words.
- 4:08Yes. And what happens in the spiritual life is we all can speak the spiritual speak.
- 4:15We can do the church ease, as I call it. But...
- 4:19Proof is in our actions. And in a house, you know, when people try to mask a
- 4:26foundation problem to sell the house or something that is deceitful,
- 4:31it only stays masked for so long.
- 4:35Right. They may like try to cover up a crack in the wall or something like that.
- 4:40But there are so many ways you can know you have a foundation problem.
- 4:43You can fill in all the cracks and it might be okay. But if you drop a ping
- 4:47pong on the floor of a house with a foundation problem, that ping pong is going
- 4:50to roll to wherever the foundation is going.
- 4:53Or a door, right? Sometimes if you have a house that has a bad foundation problem, the doors don't.
- 4:59You can't shut the door because the door or the whole door frame is out of whack.
- 5:03You can try to hide it, but you really can't. And you can't hide anything from the Lord. Amen.
- 5:09Amen. And the truth of the matter is, if you have foundation built on anything
- 5:15other than the solid rock of Jesus, it is going to permeate your life in a way that...
- 5:21Shows negative results and just an all-out badness.
- 5:26Absolutely. So true. So we all
- 5:29really do understand that our foundation is going to be evident to all.
- 5:34And in the podcast on Monday, you spent some time really talking about what
- 5:40separates the wise and the foolish, the wise man and the foolish man.
- 5:46And you gave us basically three examples of how they're different.
- 5:52And I want to just talk for a moment through each of those three examples about
- 5:58what that looks like in our lives.
- 6:01Like if that is true for us, what does that look like?
- 6:05And the first thing you said was that the wise man comes to Jesus.
- 6:10Right. Because these three things are straight out of Luke 6, 47.
- 6:14And so he comes to Jesus. He's not looking for instruction, for peace,
- 6:24for calmness, for stability, anywhere but him.
- 6:29And the foolish man is one who doesn't build on the rock, so he's not going to Jesus.
- 6:36He's either relying upon himself,
- 6:39or he is relying upon man-made logic or something other than Jesus.
- 6:49And so it matters where you go to get your information.
- 6:55And so this man, in the podcast, you talked about him coming to Jesus and how
- 7:02we have to come to Jesus for salvation.
- 7:04But I think that there's also that continual coming to Jesus.
- 7:11What's that look like in our lives?
- 7:13I believe there is a continual because he says daily we have to deny ourself and take up our cross.
- 7:20And we don't get saved every day, but we come to Jesus for the satisfaction
- 7:27of our souls. Oh, I love that.
- 7:29And we do that because we delight in him and he gives us the desires of our
- 7:35heart when we delight in him.
- 7:37And we come to him with open arms, wanting to receive what he has.
- 7:44Like the woman at the well came to Jesus empty.
- 7:48Right. but she came to the well to get
- 7:51water with an empty bucket like she didn't come
- 7:54to the well with a filled up bucket trying to get water she came
- 7:58ready to receive and we receive through reading his word through prayer through
- 8:05you and I having discussions like this about what we've read or what God has
- 8:09given us and it's important for us to fully comprehend what,
- 8:17That he stands ready to supply our every need, to give us the strength we need,
- 8:23and he's more than enough.
- 8:25And so it's kind of like a one-stop shop.
- 8:31You go to him as you are, and he changes you and transforms you and gives you
- 8:38all that you need to do life.
- 8:42Coming to Jesus is a demonstration, I think, of just the daily expression of our faith, right?
- 8:50Just coming to Him every day.
- 8:54I know days, what it feels like on days that I consciously do not come to Him
- 9:02in the morning for whatever reason.
- 9:04You know, maybe I didn't actually say no, maybe something happened, right?
- 9:09But there's a difference in a day when we're not, when we have not had our time with Jesus.
- 9:18And in addition to coming to Him and spending time in prayer,
- 9:23like you said, or in His Word, or coming to sort of His throne with a friend
- 9:29and spending time in prayer, you talked about how the wise man hears Jesus.
- 9:36And hearing from the Lord is different sometimes than just coming and reading His Word, right?
- 9:44We have to be ready to hear.
- 9:47And you've got to be willing. Yeah.
- 9:50You know, my wish I could say that when I come to the Lord, I'm not sure.
- 9:56Always and have always been receptive to what he has to say, but I'm not.
- 10:04When he's asking something that is contrary to what I want, when I think the
- 10:12ask is going to cost me more than I'm willing to pay,
- 10:16when I don't logically understand why it would be me, he would want me to do it, then I can...
- 10:26Hear the audible sounds in my head you
- 10:29know i don't hear him audibly speak to me but i
- 10:32can do that but i don't comprehend
- 10:36i don't make sense of it i don't allow it to stick and sink in it's kind of
- 10:43like teflon hitting you know i it bounces off like your heart speaking you got
- 10:49a teflon shield on your heart when you're not receptive to right like because
- 10:53if i hear and understand and comprehend,
- 10:56then now I've got to process it and do something.
- 10:59But if I just let his words in my heart and on the page and however else he's
- 11:05speaking to me, if I don't process them, if I don't comprehend them or understand them,
- 11:11then I don't find myself thinking I have to make a move on him.
- 11:19And so the wise man hears and comprehends what God is saying.
- 11:24He's processing what God has for them through a lens that says what God has is best.
- 11:35And so the wise man makes sense of what God says, even if he doesn't embrace it,
- 11:44even if he doesn't want to do it, He doesn't filter it out because he's not interested in it.
- 11:52And most of us are more like the man who builds his house on the sand in this
- 11:57respect, in that if we don't like it, we filter it out.
- 12:01And I, that's sad.
- 12:04I don't really know where to go, but that's just, that is just really sad.
- 12:10Because when you think about what you're tuning out,
- 12:14When you think about what you're not receiving, what you're choosing not to process.
- 12:19And sometimes it's scary. I know this past Sunday in church,
- 12:27I very clearly heard something from the Lord.
- 12:30And it was such a blessing to me.
- 12:34And not long after that, I knew I was going to have to use that.
- 12:39And I heard again what I'm supposed to do with that information.
- 12:42And I almost wish I hadn't heard the second part except it was God himself who was speaking to me.
- 12:51And I think for those of us who have built on the rock and,
- 12:57We quickly get back to processing. To whatever, yes, the processing.
- 13:02And we don't get astray because it's not like we have a bunch of sand in our
- 13:08foundation. Right, right.
- 13:09We sweep that foundation to keep the sand out.
- 13:14What I also know is that hearing requires processing in order for us to get
- 13:25the third part of what the wise man was so different than the foolish man.
- 13:33Because the wise man does what he hears from Jesus. Right.
- 13:37And so the foolish man is filtering out what he says, thinking that somehow
- 13:41I didn't hear it. I didn't understand it.
- 13:44I'm not going to have to do it. I won't be held accountable.
- 13:46But that's not what Scripture says.
- 13:48Scripture says we are accountable for every word that's in a word of God. Yes.
- 13:52Every jot and every tittle. Yep.
- 13:55And just because you don't know it doesn't mean you're not responsible for it.
- 14:00I promise you that if you don't know this, sticking your hand on a hot stove will burn you.
- 14:05Just because you don't know it doesn't mean when you stick your hand on it,
- 14:08it's not going to burn you.
- 14:09You're going to be burnt just like everybody that knows it, and then you'll
- 14:12know it and you'll never do it again. Not purposely.
- 14:16But the wise man went to the right place for his information.
- 14:21He received information he was willing to hear, process, and then do.
- 14:30He acted on it. He did. Yeah.
- 14:33He did. And that is super. Well, it's because it's what we're supposed to do,
- 14:41right? We're never supposed to hear something from the Lord.
- 14:44The Lord doesn't tell us something ever, I don't believe, just to tell us,
- 14:49right? He has an ultimate purpose for everything that he tells us.
- 14:54So it must be he tells us something to have us do something.
- 14:59Because he does everything for our good and his glory.
- 15:02Which means we usually have to do something to show off his glory.
- 15:06You got to comprehend and understand what's going on so that you can make a move off go. Yes.
- 15:12Absolutely. Absolutely. So I want to close with one thing, last thing you said.
- 15:17And you made the statement on Monday's podcast. You said you don't lay down the rock.
- 15:23You build on it.
- 15:26And I just kind of want to bring us back to our foundation is evident.
- 15:31Because there are so many things in this world that I think many of us believe are foundational,
- 15:42like education and our bank accounts.
- 15:48Too much learning is weariness to the mind. Yes.
- 15:53Or our retirement accounts or our job.
- 15:58There are so our family.
- 16:00Right. There are so many things that I think we focus on that are foundational.
- 16:08That really aren't. That really aren't. They they're important. They're important.
- 16:14But they're not the foundation. You can't build a life on an education.
- 16:20No. You can't build your life on your money.
- 16:23You can't build your life on your intellect.
- 16:26Because doing everything right, sometimes you still lose that.
- 16:29Only thing that you can build your life on is the rock of Jesus Christ.
- 16:34And the Bible is so complete.
- 16:37You know, John 14, 6 says, I am the way, the truth, and the life,
- 16:40and no man cometh unto the Father but by me.
- 16:42He's it. And what's really important is John 10, 10 says that...
- 16:48He came that we might have life and have it more abundantly.
- 16:51And he juxtaposes that in the beginning with the devil comes to kill, steal, and destroy.
- 16:57So this passage in Luke 6, verses 46 and 49 really is explained in John 10.10.
- 17:06If you want the abundant life, you build your life on the solid rock.
- 17:11And the rock is there. He always has been, always will be.
- 17:16And he currently is. Amen. So we build upon Him.
- 17:21Amen. Wow. I hope you all enjoyed this podcast of Women at the Well Ministries.
- 17:28It is always so much fun to just sit and process what we learned in Monday's
- 17:34podcast and to just have a little more time in application, right?
- 17:39That's our favorite thing. How does it apply?
- 17:41We always say that about Scripture. What does it say? What does it mean?
- 17:44And how does it apply? Because if you never get to the apply,
- 17:47it doesn't change your life. Amen.
- 17:49Well, thank you all so much for listening.
