• 0:26
Speaker 3: Let's welcome in Rod.
• 0:28
Speaker 4: Hey, Rod, how are you?
• 0:31
  Speaker 1: Hey?
• 0:31
Speaker 5: Guys, sorry, my phone's blown up. Must be the name.
• 0:37
  Speaker 6: Weird.
• 0:38
Speaker 5: He wants me to get his cat from his basement
• 0:40
  Speaker 5: to creep.
• 0:41
Speaker 3: Oh my god, it sounds like a guy. First of all,
• 0:45
Speaker 3: what kind of neighbor has a cat these days? I mean,
• 0:47
Speaker 3: aren't we all dog people to this? I mean, what
• 0:49
Speaker 3: do we do with cats?
• 0:50
  Speaker 2: Well?
• 0:51
  Speaker 5: I don't. I don't have a cat anymore. But I
• 0:54
Speaker 5: used to have a cat before Mitten's was run over
• 0:56
  Speaker 5: by a car.
• 0:57
Speaker 1: If you oh my lord, so before we rubbed salt wound.
• 1:02
Speaker 1: I used to be a cat guy.
• 1:04
Speaker 3: But yeah, I understood everyone. Everyone moves on for one
• 1:07
Speaker 3: reason or another. I'm surely so, Rod, let's talk about this.
• 1:12
  Speaker 5: So we're uh, we're here.
• 1:13
Speaker 3: The show is called dirty rush. And we're talking about
• 1:15
Speaker 3: our college experiences, both you know, as perhaps members of fraternities,
• 1:20
Speaker 3: but also with different sororities and what really you know,
• 1:24
Speaker 3: drew us to those sororities and et cetera. You know,
• 1:27
Speaker 3: what was your experience like and uh and what sororities
• 1:29
Speaker 3: were like the top houses where you were.
• 1:32
Speaker 1: So in terms of what I was in a I
• 1:35
  Speaker 1: was in a fraternity, so I didn't you know, I
• 1:38
Speaker 1: only got to see the sororities from afar. They wouldn't
• 1:41
Speaker 1: they wouldn't talk to me so much.
• 1:43
Speaker 3: But it were you were a g D that they
• 1:45
  Speaker 3: got the gd S No, g D I.
• 1:47
Speaker 1: S No, those are those are those? Those are the
• 1:50
Speaker 1: people that didn't talk to anybody. I only got to talk.
• 1:53
Speaker 5: Yeah, I talked to my fraternity. We love dudes.
• 1:56
Speaker 1: It was like we were lucky if we had girls
• 1:58
Speaker 1: come over and say hi to us. For that part,
• 2:01
Speaker 1: I was no. The guys were great. I was in
• 2:04
  Speaker 1: a fun house.
• 2:05
Speaker 5: But I think you know, as far as relates to
• 2:09
Speaker 5: my school, Indiana University, it was hoo'siers.
• 2:14
Speaker 2: I'm an Indiana grad.
• 2:15
Speaker 1: That's right, goeah, who's your daddy? That's what my master
• 2:19
  Speaker 1: would always say.
• 2:19
Speaker 2: To me, what, uh, wait, time out. What year did
• 2:22
  Speaker 2: you graduate?
• 2:23
Speaker 5: I graduated in twenty twenty two.
• 2:25
Speaker 3: Okay, so you're a recent relatively recent graduate. Any familiarity
• 2:28
Speaker 3: with the house from where they on campus?
• 2:30
Speaker 5: Still, Oh, of course there were. They had a lot
• 2:33
Speaker 5: of fun chemicals going on upstairs.
• 2:34
Speaker 1: They were all they're all I think they're all aspiring
• 2:37
Speaker 1: pharmaceutical majors. I'm sure interesting.
• 2:40
Speaker 2: Interesting, we're no longer a part of campus.
• 2:43
Speaker 1: Oh well, it's a beautiful house. I think they inspired
• 2:47
Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure they inspired sixteen hundred.
• 2:49
Speaker 5: Pennsylvania in Washington. I think that's I think the White
• 2:53
Speaker 5: House medication said, you know, this is this is this
• 2:55
Speaker 5: isn't this isn't bad. Let's see what we what we
• 2:58
Speaker 5: should go with. Let's do that.
• 3:00
  Speaker 3: Like it?
• 3:00
Speaker 5: I like it? So what's the alties? Were the big
• 3:02
Speaker 5: ones when you were there? We're talking like big guys,
• 3:05
  Speaker 5: and like I.
• 3:06
Speaker 3: Think we're talking like the more popular perhaps I hear it.
• 3:10
Speaker 5: Okay, so not like the Taco bell three am, Well
• 3:13
  Speaker 5: I got you?
• 3:13
Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, yeah, big popular, I mean a fee kind
• 3:18
  Speaker 1: of timeless.
• 3:20
Speaker 5: There was had a lot of good friends in g FI.
• 3:22
Speaker 1: They were really fun pi Fi, the Angels Uh, my
• 3:27
Speaker 1: mom was a pie fight.
• 3:28
Speaker 5: Not there, but I like to think there is, you know,
• 3:31
Speaker 5: pi fight every school.
• 3:32
Speaker 1: They always they got like sleeper cells, like they can
• 3:34
Speaker 1: always kind of activate and and they have that.
• 3:38
Speaker 5: They're always fun, but there's a little bit of psycho
• 3:40
Speaker 5: in there. So any given day like kind of that
• 3:46
  Speaker 5: hot crazy matrix.
• 3:48
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 3:49
Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's really fun in college. It gets it
• 3:51
Speaker 1: gets interesting out of college because it would just be
• 3:53
Speaker 1: like a Tuesday night and you're like, wait a second,
• 3:55
Speaker 1: I just I just want to watch the game, and
• 3:58
Speaker 1: all of a sudden, it's like come on.
• 4:04
Speaker 5: But no, they were.
• 4:05
Speaker 1: Pie fis were great. You know we I only heard
• 4:08
Speaker 1: that You might have heard this, Ben, but I didn't
• 4:11
Speaker 1: have the pleasure of interacting with But I did hear
• 4:15
Speaker 1: the tale of such at Indiana.
• 4:17
Speaker 5: I think they were something.
• 4:19
Speaker 1: And then I think they actually got squeezed out by
• 4:21
Speaker 1: the university because they too were into their pharmaceuticals and
• 4:24
Speaker 1: so they were that they probably they probably weren't FDA
• 4:31
Speaker 1: approved ready, you know, to be on the shelves as CBS.
• 4:34
Speaker 5: But I think they were really good at pushing medicine
• 4:38
  Speaker 5: around campus.
• 4:39
Speaker 2: Yeah, what house were you in at Indiana?
• 4:41
  Speaker 1: I was a Phi Capasi. I guess I still I
• 4:44
Speaker 1: still am Phi capa psi fide.
• 4:46
Speaker 5: Yeah, no, those those guys are great.
• 4:48
Speaker 1: We actually had a interesting little deal here because before
• 4:52
Speaker 1: I got there, five said apparently.
• 4:54
Speaker 5: Was well what you call top house. And then they
• 4:59
Speaker 5: they gotten little snap foo with.
• 5:01
Speaker 1: Uh, I don't know. They had a couple of animals
• 5:04
Speaker 1: come in during pledge. It like like farm animals that
• 5:06
  Speaker 1: I don't I don't know if that was allowed.
• 5:08
Speaker 5: And they got booted.
• 5:11
Speaker 1: And so Sigma Kappa was actually the sitting resident at
• 5:16
Speaker 1: the fraternity house. And when I got there, there was
• 5:19
Speaker 1: a bidding war. I believe this, This is like it
• 5:22
Speaker 1: was political. There was a bidding war for who gets
• 5:24
Speaker 1: to be in the fire side house. And so right
• 5:26
Speaker 1: when I was pledging where I was pledging in a
• 5:29
Speaker 1: parking garage because that's where h Q was, they got
• 5:32
Speaker 1: the rights of the house back.
• 5:34
  Speaker 5: Yeah, they had.
• 5:35
Speaker 1: They had they had a we'll call it uh base
• 5:38
Speaker 1: Operation Charlie for all you call of duty players. Out
• 5:42
Speaker 1: Post Delta is where we were at. And so we
• 5:45
Speaker 1: moved over one day to the big house and it
• 5:50
Speaker 1: was and it was spotless because those girls were clean.
• 5:53
Speaker 1: And it took us about a week before that place
• 5:55
Speaker 1: was filthy. It was a pig sty playing a welcome week.
• 6:00
Speaker 1: We set off the fire alarm about every other weekend,
• 6:02
Speaker 1: and then we got a letter from the dean basically
• 6:05
Speaker 1: said no more like you, never again.
• 6:08
Speaker 5: And I looked at that. I was like, never, what
• 6:10
Speaker 5: happens if there was like a real fire.
• 6:13
Speaker 3: Yeah, so never again, never again?
• 6:19
Speaker 5: Really exactly, Dean Warmer.
• 6:22
Speaker 2: Yeah, now the two of you. I think this is
• 6:25
Speaker 2: one of my fondest memories of sororities. The food, you know,
• 6:30
Speaker 2: it was strategic when I was there to make friendships
• 6:35
Speaker 2: with great people that were real friends, but also to
• 6:37
Speaker 2: get them to invite you for lunches because it was
• 6:41
Speaker 2: convenient to walk to for class. The fraternity house food
• 6:45
Speaker 2: was was terrible. A few meals were edible. Others weren't
• 6:51
Speaker 2: sorority houses you walk into. And when I said this originally, Rod,
• 6:54
Speaker 2: I said, we're going to talk about fraternity houses and
• 6:57
Speaker 2: sorority homes. I mean it, sorority felt like a home
• 7:01
  Speaker 2: to me.
• 7:01
  Speaker 5: They just felt.
• 7:03
Speaker 2: Better to be in than where I was living.
• 7:06
Speaker 5: Yeah, I I never walked around my house barefoot. Ever,
• 7:12
Speaker 5: you know, in the sorority home right, there was definitely a.
• 7:15
Speaker 1: Sense of like, oh, someone's mom was just here. But
• 7:20
Speaker 1: the food, I am gonna I am gonna disagree with
• 7:23
Speaker 1: you for one second because the food at sorority houses.
• 7:26
Speaker 1: You gotta understand, like we're in a new era of
• 7:30
Speaker 1: woman where it's like everything is organic and everything is like,
• 7:34
Speaker 1: you know, green, and like there are no vegetables in Indiana,
• 7:37
Speaker 1: but they still found a way to ship them out
• 7:40
Speaker 1: to the PI Fi house and so it was like
• 7:42
Speaker 1: kale biscuit and like the superfoods that sucked. And me,
• 7:49
Speaker 1: he had an actual like our chef was right out
• 7:53
Speaker 1: of prison because there was like a good pipeline from
• 7:56
Speaker 1: I think Scott County Prison to Indiana foods.
• 8:00
  Speaker 5: Cirumstance.
• 8:02
  Speaker 7: That's fair.
• 8:03
  Speaker 2: You're not wrong.
• 8:04
  Speaker 5: So I think I think.
• 8:05
Speaker 1: I can't remember his name, but I know one of
• 8:07
Speaker 1: his best courses at prison was fried Fridays. And so
• 8:12
Speaker 1: every Friday we just had cheese, french fries and chicken tenders.
• 8:18
Speaker 5: Yeah, that was and that was it.
• 8:20
  Speaker 1: I don't I don't recall having the best diet there,
• 8:24
  Speaker 1: but it was.
• 8:26
Speaker 5: It was a lot of good eating.
• 8:28
Speaker 2: You know, you're not wrong. I remember, Yeah, so much
• 8:31
Speaker 2: fried food at Indiana. I mean I'm from Indiana also,
• 8:34
  Speaker 2: so I grew.
• 8:35
Speaker 5: Up in the Carmel area or what part of.
• 8:37
Speaker 2: Indiana, No, Northern Indiana or saw Indiana or saw Okay, Yeah, yeah,
• 8:42
Speaker 2: so I'm from the north north part of the state.
• 8:45
Speaker 2: We have fried food there. I want to give a
• 8:48
Speaker 2: quick shout out to the Zetas. They happily fed me
• 8:52
Speaker 2: for lunches and they were a nice group of people,
• 8:54
Speaker 2: and it was always enjoyable to go over there. I
• 8:58
Speaker 2: always also felt like a sense of pride. I'd like
• 9:01
Speaker 2: when I would sit there at lunch. They had these
• 9:02
Speaker 2: big windows that overlooked or that the street that was
• 9:05
Speaker 2: busy with students walking past would could look inside. And
• 9:09
Speaker 2: I always made sure I sat by the window just
• 9:11
Speaker 2: in case one of my friends walked by and he
• 9:13
Speaker 2: saw me, you know, sitting in there eating lunch with
• 9:16
Speaker 2: all of the Zetas. It always gave me a sense
• 9:18
  Speaker 2: of pride.
• 9:20
Speaker 5: Yeah, no, for sure, like like look at me. I
• 9:23
Speaker 5: made it kind of.
• 9:24
Speaker 2: A yeah I made it. You guys can't come into
• 9:26
Speaker 2: this party, but I'm inside enjoying myself with a nice
• 9:28
Speaker 2: cup of tea, and you know.
• 9:30
Speaker 5: Yeah, no, one could only dream.
• 9:32
Speaker 1: I never saw the inside that house except for when
• 9:36
Speaker 1: they did. I was never invited like that of course
• 9:39
Speaker 1: was that was too too kind.
• 9:41
  Speaker 5: They had fundraisers.
• 9:43
Speaker 1: Do you guys remember like at the beginning it would
• 9:45
Speaker 1: have been like pasta nights, like the PASA feeds. You know,
• 9:48
Speaker 1: they were all like, did anybody could go? You spend
• 9:50
Speaker 1: ten bucks and anybody could go. But I remember that
• 9:53
Speaker 1: we would all, uh, we found a loophole where one
• 9:58
Speaker 1: guy paid and got the wristband.
• 10:01
Speaker 5: He would kind of just like, yeah, we.
• 10:03
Speaker 1: Give the risk. We have the biggest guy go pay.
• 10:07
Speaker 1: So some guy with like a ginormous rest.
• 10:11
  Speaker 5: He would get.
• 10:11
Speaker 1: And I think after that they saw it and so
• 10:14
Speaker 1: years later they probably changed it to the stamp method
• 10:17
  Speaker 1: because he couldn't feel off. But I remember I I
• 10:20
  Speaker 1: didn't pay it.
• 10:21
Speaker 5: Well, I'm outing myself.
• 10:23
Speaker 1: I did. It was Aaron's spirit like eating.
• 10:25
  Speaker 5: But we didn't. I didn't. I didn't help raise any funds.
• 10:29
Speaker 2: No, it's college. Nobody has money. Rod. Thanks for joining
• 10:32
Speaker 2: us today. You are a gift and a pleasure. Things
• 10:35
Speaker 2: are coming on. They're Dirty Rush podcast and sharing all
• 10:38
Speaker 2: the amazing things about Indian University and how every single
• 10:41
Speaker 2: person in the United States should try to get in
• 10:43
Speaker 2: because it is spectacular.
• 10:46
Speaker 5: Next level guys. Thanks.
• 11:03
Speaker 3: So our next guest on Dirty Rush, We're gonna call
• 11:06
Speaker 3: him Todd, which I think is a great made up name. Todd,
• 11:12
Speaker 3: Welcome to the show. So Ben and I have been
• 11:14
Speaker 3: talking amongst ourselves as well as some guests today, about
• 11:19
Speaker 3: their experience with both fraternity and sorority life back in
• 11:23
  Speaker 3: the college days.
• 11:25
  Speaker 2: And were you.
• 11:26
  Speaker 3: A cow guy?
• 11:28
  Speaker 4: Yeah?
• 11:28
  Speaker 6: I was a cow guy.
• 11:30
Speaker 3: My wife was a Kappa at Calne as I recall
• 11:34
Speaker 3: as one of the top houses of course at cal
• 11:37
Speaker 3: but nationally without question.
• 11:39
Speaker 5: Were they one of your favorite sororities as well?
• 11:41
Speaker 6: Absolutely? Yeah, I dated and we're friends with many many
• 11:46
Speaker 6: Kappa and they were the best.
• 11:49
Speaker 3: Yeah, seemed to what made him so much different than
• 11:51
Speaker 3: the other houses on campus, Like, what were the qualities
• 11:54
Speaker 3: that you saw there?
• 11:56
Speaker 6: They had a cool confidence that was kind of uncommon,
• 12:02
Speaker 6: you know, people coming up in that age range and
• 12:06
Speaker 6: trying to be social and be desirable, kind of how
• 12:10
Speaker 6: to try hard element at times, and Kapa had a
• 12:16
Speaker 6: cool kind of confidence that you didn't see elsewhere.
• 12:21
Speaker 2: How well, Todd, or you know when you were in school,
• 12:26
Speaker 2: how well did you get to know the sororities? I
• 12:28
Speaker 2: mean if you look at this now with a real
• 12:32
Speaker 2: life perspective, you're pledging you get into your house. You
• 12:37
Speaker 2: have about three years two and a half before senior
• 12:40
Speaker 2: ear hits, and everybody starts to do their own thing
• 12:42
Speaker 2: to really get to know people. And it seems like
• 12:45
Speaker 2: you do in Greek life. So I guess my question
• 12:50
Speaker 2: is how well did you actually get to know people?
• 12:52
Speaker 2: And then the second question to that is like, why
• 12:55
Speaker 2: was it so easy in such an expedited timeframe to
• 12:58
Speaker 2: get to know the houses while you're at school?
• 13:02
Speaker 6: Well, yeah, I got to know people very well. And
• 13:05
Speaker 6: I think, like anywhere in life, you gravitate towards people
• 13:09
Speaker 6: with similar background or in my case my case, similar
• 13:14
Speaker 6: sense of human humor. I don't really care about anybody's background.
• 13:17
Speaker 6: I really more care about what makes them laugh and
• 13:21
Speaker 6: does that make it fun to hang out with? And
• 13:23
Speaker 6: then I think it's so easy to fast track friendships
• 13:28
Speaker 6: because you're all thrown into a new environment. And so
• 13:32
Speaker 6: you know, I was a kid who went from my
• 13:34
Speaker 6: high school to my college and I didn't bring any
• 13:37
Speaker 6: friends with me, and so it was a opportunity to
• 13:42
Speaker 6: meet all different kinds of people, and you just very
• 13:45
Speaker 6: quickly meet the ones that you want to spend time with.
• 13:50
Speaker 2: Now, you two are both very handsome men. I'm assuming
• 13:55
Speaker 2: in college you were sought after. One of the notes
• 14:02
Speaker 2: here from our producers and also some of the former
• 14:07
Speaker 2: or the other hosts of the show, the actual host
• 14:09
Speaker 2: of this show, they talk about being claimed Surity girls
• 14:15
Speaker 2: claim fraternity guys. They said, So my question for the
• 14:17
Speaker 2: two of you, were you ever claimed by a Surrity
• 14:20
Speaker 2: girl and how did you handle it?
• 14:23
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's an interesting question.
• 14:26
Speaker 6: There was one instance where there was a girl who
• 14:30
Speaker 6: everybody knew really liked me. She was outward about it,
• 14:35
Speaker 6: and so that just made everybody in her close, pure
• 14:40
Speaker 6: group completely feel like I was off limits. And that
• 14:45
  Speaker 6: was a shame because I wasn't interested in a relationship
• 14:49
Speaker 6: with this girl to the depth that she was interested
• 14:51
Speaker 6: in me, and her friends respected her well enough or
• 14:55
Speaker 6: were fearful enough that they didn't cross the boundary. So yeah,
• 15:00
Speaker 6: there was a small group of people that were not
• 15:04
Speaker 6: on the table for me because of that situation.
• 15:07
Speaker 5: Sadly, Bob, Yeah, you know.
• 15:09
Speaker 3: I didn't really know what that question meant when you
• 15:11
Speaker 3: first said it. So I'm really glad that Todd answered
• 15:14
Speaker 3: it because it helped provide some clarity, So thank you Todd. Yeah,
• 15:18
Speaker 3: I think I might have had a similar situation to that,
• 15:21
Speaker 3: where I kind of had to fall into the friend zone.
• 15:25
Speaker 3: I guess with a few of the other girls that
• 15:28
Speaker 3: I might have been interested in at the time because
• 15:30
Speaker 3: one of their friends had kind of, you know, made
• 15:33
Speaker 3: it known that she was a you know, it was
• 15:37
Speaker 3: into me in a different way, and I always saw
• 15:39
Speaker 3: her more as just a friend, so I do. Yeah,
• 15:41
Speaker 3: I recall going through something like that myself, So yeah,
• 15:43
Speaker 3: I know what you mean by that.
• 15:45
  Speaker 5: It can happen.
• 15:46
Speaker 2: The The interesting thing here is the dynamics with in
• 15:50
Speaker 2: sworty houses. Now I don't know that your backgrounds, but
• 15:55
Speaker 2: I'm assuming that you enjoyed having a good time at
• 15:59
Speaker 2: day parties, going on dates, those types of things. How
• 16:03
Speaker 2: did you two handle it within sorority houses If you
• 16:06
Speaker 2: were dating somebody that ended and then you were interested
• 16:11
Speaker 2: in somebody else that maybe was a sister of hers
• 16:14
Speaker 2: in the same house, did that ever cause awkward moments?
• 16:18
Speaker 6: I think you just had to be a little bit
• 16:21
Speaker 6: conscious of the time frame. You would not do well
• 16:27
Speaker 6: in a long term, you know, a four year school,
• 16:29
Speaker 6: You would not do well going from a to b directly.
• 16:34
Speaker 6: You kind of have to give it a little bit
• 16:36
Speaker 6: of empty time, and then of course you can pursue
• 16:40
  Speaker 6: somebody else.
• 16:40
Speaker 5: It's the sorty lines are not that clear cut.
• 16:45
Speaker 3: Yeah, and it always helped if the person that you
• 16:48
Speaker 3: split up with started dating someone else before you.
• 16:52
Speaker 5: You know, moved in on someone else.
• 16:55
Speaker 3: So, for example, if you're dating a girl in you know,
• 16:57
Speaker 3: the Alpha fe house for example, and you break up
• 17:00
Speaker 3: and she starts to date some other guy, well, then
• 17:03
Speaker 3: of course it's okay for you to ask her friend
• 17:05
Speaker 3: out right. But if she's not dated anyone new since,
• 17:08
Speaker 3: then you probably need to pump the brakes, I would guess.
• 17:13
Speaker 2: Todd, thanks for joining us today. Thank you for doing
• 17:15
Speaker 2: this just fun little ending here. You do know one
• 17:20
Speaker 2: of our producers, Amy from cal Can you give us
• 17:27
Speaker 2: what you remember about Amy when she was in sorority
• 17:31
  Speaker 2: life at Cal.
• 17:33
Speaker 6: Amy in college in general was I'm not surprised where
• 17:39
Speaker 6: she is today, that's for sure. Amy was organized, reliable,
• 17:45
Speaker 6: fun and not stressed from day one. I mean I'm
• 17:48
Speaker 6: talking I met the girl when she was seventeen years old,
• 17:52
Speaker 6: and she was already like dealing with life properly. I
• 17:57
Speaker 6: have so much respect for.
• 17:58
Speaker 2: Her, not stress is an interest. I don't know Amy
• 18:02
  Speaker 2: not stressed.
• 18:04
Speaker 6: Well, Amy likes to get busy with things. But Amy knows,
• 18:10
Speaker 6: she knows how to do it, and so I think
• 18:14
Speaker 6: that's just part of her process.
• 18:18
  Speaker 5: I like that.
• 18:19
Speaker 2: Yeah, I cannot imagine Amy Sugarman and a sorority. I
• 18:23
Speaker 2: mean she had to be like not only president, but
• 18:25
Speaker 2: social chair, also in charge of all sporting events and activity.
• 18:29
Speaker 2: I mean, I can't imagine the list that she had,
• 18:32
Speaker 2: the resume she came out of.
• 18:34
  Speaker 6: A daily basis.
• 18:35
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it'd be wild. Tom, Thanks for joining us today.
• 18:39
  Speaker 2: We appreciate it.
• 18:40
  Speaker 4: Thank you.
• 18:41
  Speaker 3: I like this. I mean, we've learned a lot about
• 18:43
Speaker 3: people today, right then.
• 18:46
Speaker 2: You know, I've really learned that a few houses stand
• 18:48
Speaker 2: up above the rest, Bob. You know, no matter where
• 18:51
Speaker 2: you're at in which part of the country, if you're
• 18:53
Speaker 2: in the midwest, Indiana University or Michigan State, or you're
• 18:57
Speaker 2: way on the coast at col some of the same
• 19:00
Speaker 2: houses continue to get brought up time after time again,
• 19:03
Speaker 2: which I think is a credit to those homes and
• 19:06
Speaker 2: to and to what they stand for. I've also learned
• 19:10
Speaker 2: it's really fun for me because I mean, college was
• 19:13
Speaker 2: a wild time, and all of us are discovering ourselves.
• 19:16
Speaker 2: We're all insecure in our own ways. We're trying to
• 19:19
Speaker 2: make new friendships, we're trying to get ourselves out into
• 19:21
Speaker 2: the world, we're trying to network, We're doing all the
• 19:23
Speaker 2: things in a very expedited timeframe, and it gets crazy.
• 19:27
Speaker 2: It does. As Rod mentioned, and you know, was removed
• 19:33
Speaker 2: for good reasons, reasons I would never fight. Yeah, you
• 19:38
Speaker 2: look at those guys today, and you look at the
• 19:40
Speaker 2: men we've talked to today, and we look at you,
• 19:43
Speaker 2: and it's fun for me to see how life matures us.
• 19:46
Speaker 2: Also in a sense where these are great memories and
• 19:49
Speaker 2: stories look back on. But you're not. Nobody that we've
• 19:51
Speaker 2: brought on has said, oh my gosh, this one party
• 19:54
Speaker 2: we threw was the craziest time. That was the coolest
• 19:57
Speaker 2: moment ever. No, that's not getting brought up. Instead, I
• 20:01
Speaker 2: think the context here is for the people listening is
• 20:05
Speaker 2: what people are going to remember is who you were.
• 20:07
Speaker 2: Who you were to them, Yeah, you know how you
• 20:10
Speaker 2: treated them. And it isn't necessarily the the pursuit of attention,
• 20:18
Speaker 2: but the pursuit of trying to figure out who you
• 20:21
Speaker 2: are to yourself. And others, And I think that's what's
• 20:23
Speaker 2: going to last until your fifties, which so many of
• 20:25
Speaker 2: these people are that we're talking to.
• 20:27
Speaker 3: Right, No, I agree, I agree with you, man.
• 20:29
Speaker 5: It has been nice to hear.
• 20:30
Speaker 3: That been kind of a recurring theme.
• 20:46
Speaker 2: Our next caller is a avid listener to the Dirty
• 20:50
Speaker 2: Rush podcast, a huge fan of the show, and very
• 20:53
Speaker 2: excited to be here. Cruz welcome.
• 20:56
Speaker 7: Yeah, thank you for having me on.
• 21:00
  Speaker 5: CRUs.
• 21:00
Speaker 2: You're here because you care about sororities and fraternities. Can
• 21:06
Speaker 2: you give us a little background of why you care?
• 21:10
Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it probably stems from my dad. He
• 21:13
Speaker 4: was in a fraternity and same with his father, so
• 21:16
Speaker 4: kind of ingrained in me and then my brother as well,
• 21:18
Speaker 4: and followed my brother to college and chose.
• 21:22
Speaker 7: The same fraternity as both of them.
• 21:23
Speaker 4: So it's kind of just a legacy thing for me
• 21:26
Speaker 4: and then sisters as well, they've joined sororities as well.
• 21:29
Speaker 2: So what fraternity is it?
• 21:33
Speaker 7: It is Beta Beteita Pie.
• 21:35
Speaker 5: Yes, the Beta Theta Pies.
• 21:37
  Speaker 2: It's good. It's a good one. Now we're really here
• 21:40
Speaker 2: today to talk about sororities. We haven't asked anybody this
• 21:44
Speaker 2: question yet. Well, when I say and goodness, gracious Cruise,
• 21:48
Speaker 2: as a fan of this show, I know you know
• 21:50
Speaker 2: how these things work. But when I say the word sorority,
• 21:56
  Speaker 2: what comes to.
• 21:57
Speaker 7: Mind, uh drama probably what else?
• 22:03
  Speaker 3: Uh?
• 22:05
Speaker 7: Fun? Sororities are fun?
• 22:06
  Speaker 5: Bob?
• 22:07
Speaker 2: Do you agree with that?
• 22:08
Speaker 3: Yeah? I do. I mean, you know, there is a
• 22:12
Speaker 3: lot and I'm not sure if Cruz's order or if
• 22:14
Speaker 3: that was just what was coming up, but I think
• 22:16
Speaker 3: fun and drama probably could be, you know, at the
• 22:20
Speaker 3: top of the same pyramid there as far as the emotional,
• 22:26
Speaker 3: you know, responses you might get when you're you know,
• 22:30
Speaker 3: having fun at a sorority house or with a sorority
• 22:32
Speaker 3: a group of sorority girls. But yeah, I think fun
• 22:34
Speaker 3: is definitely the key, right. The whole point of the
• 22:36
Speaker 3: Greek system, I think is meeting people, me making lifelong friends,
• 22:40
Speaker 3: and having fun building your circles.
• 22:44
Speaker 2: Cruz, we're talking today about some of our top sororities.
• 22:50
Speaker 2: If you had a top sorority that comes to mind
• 22:53
Speaker 2: that you enjoyed being around, which one would you mention?
• 22:57
Speaker 4: I think Theta was probably who we hung out with
• 23:01
Speaker 4: the most and who we enjoyed the most. And then
• 23:03
Speaker 4: obviously our sister sorority was Pifi, so would have to
• 23:07
Speaker 4: show love to them as well.
• 23:09
Speaker 7: But to me, those are the ones that come to mind.
• 23:11
Speaker 2: And then which ones where would you stay away from?
• 23:15
Speaker 2: Maybe didn't hang out with as much.
• 23:19
Speaker 4: Didn't get to interact with, tried out a lot, or
• 23:23
Speaker 4: Faimu I would say, tried out Cappa, Delta KD. We're
• 23:30
Speaker 4: probably the ones we interacted with least.
• 23:33
Speaker 2: And is that just based on kind of the where'd
• 23:36
  Speaker 2: you to school?
• 23:38
Speaker 7: I was to school at University of Washington.
• 23:40
Speaker 2: Is that just because of the setup of the school
• 23:42
Speaker 2: or is that because the social hierarchy or what was
• 23:46
  Speaker 2: the reasoning?
• 23:47
Speaker 7: Yeah, I think it's a little bit of both.
• 23:48
  Speaker 4: It's a smaller Greek system at UB, so it's it's
• 23:53
Speaker 4: everybody knows everybody, So it's not like we didn't know
• 23:56
Speaker 4: them and we didn't interact with them, but it was
• 23:58
Speaker 4: just kind of like what we would do, who would
• 24:00
Speaker 4: we would associate with when we were going out? You know,
• 24:03
Speaker 4: we liked the same things as the theaters and the
• 24:05
Speaker 4: Pie five, so we were just drawn to them more naturally.
• 24:08
Speaker 4: And also from a geographical standpoint, their houses were right
• 24:11
Speaker 4: next to us, and at you DUB, everyone lives in
• 24:14
Speaker 4: the house starting from day one as a freshman going
• 24:17
Speaker 4: through junior year, so that's kind of unique. And they
• 24:20
Speaker 4: were right next to us, so it's you know, it's
• 24:21
Speaker 4: really easy to pop over and just say what's up
• 24:24
Speaker 4: after classes and whatnot.
• 24:26
Speaker 5: So that's the second time we've heard this.
• 24:28
Speaker 3: The proximity thing is like a big deal, right. I
• 24:30
Speaker 3: think it's going to be university specific on that one too. Like,
• 24:34
Speaker 3: like Cruse said, you know, they were a smaller Greek system,
• 24:38
Speaker 3: so being right next door making it easy. I mean,
• 24:41
Speaker 3: I think any fraternity and any sorority living next door each.
• 24:44
Speaker 5: Other are going to hang out for a perfuse.
• 24:46
Speaker 3: Right, But like when it's a smaller collection of people
• 24:49
Speaker 3: than that, proximity really probably helps a great deal.
• 24:53
Speaker 2: The thing that I loved about university was the dorm life.
• 24:57
Speaker 2: I thought the dorm life was one of the best
• 24:59
Speaker 2: things ever. There's benefits to Greek life, and there's benefits
• 25:02
Speaker 2: to everybody moving out of the dorms, But the thing
• 25:05
Speaker 2: that I loved about being in the dorms was that
• 25:07
Speaker 2: everybody was equal. You didn't you know, everybody had the
• 25:10
Speaker 2: same living situation. You had to live in a dorm.
• 25:13
Speaker 2: Your freshman year, there was you know, all of us
• 25:16
Speaker 2: were compact on top of each other. We had a
• 25:18
Speaker 2: co ed dorm, so that was always the shuffling of
• 25:22
Speaker 2: you know, who was taking the showers when, and how
• 25:24
Speaker 2: weird was it, you know, to be doing that whole dance.
• 25:28
Speaker 2: Just a really like fun time, honestly. So it's interesting
• 25:32
Speaker 2: to me to think that you would live in the
• 25:33
Speaker 2: fraternity house starting freshman year. Was that a benefit to
• 25:38
Speaker 2: you when it comes to your relationships or sororities or
• 25:40
Speaker 2: do you feel like you missed out on that you
• 25:43
Speaker 2: know what's common, which is a dorm life.
• 25:46
Speaker 4: Yeah, so I would say there's pros and cons ub
• 25:48
Speaker 4: is very unique in that because of the size and
• 25:51
Speaker 4: just I think tradition with the school you move in
• 25:54
Speaker 4: right away into the fraternity, but they do it in
• 25:56
Speaker 4: a unique way where both stories and fratorneys have these
• 25:59
Speaker 4: things called port for the new incoming class. So for guys,
• 26:03
Speaker 4: we had a porch and op fraternity and it was
• 26:05
Speaker 4: one room and it's military style bunks and you have
• 26:09
Speaker 4: all thirty guys living in the same room, sharing everything
• 26:13
Speaker 4: and it's like your communal space. And the girls had
• 26:15
Speaker 4: the same thing in their sororities. So it kind of
• 26:17
Speaker 4: takes what you're talking about in the dorms to a
• 26:19
Speaker 4: whole new level where you're like really packed on top
• 26:22
Speaker 4: of each other. So it was a lot of fun.
• 26:25
Speaker 4: But obviously it has you know, it's pros and cons.
• 26:28
Speaker 4: You're not like living on the same floor as girls
• 26:31
Speaker 4: or sorority girls, so it's uh, yeah, I would say
• 26:34
Speaker 4: it has pros and cons.
• 26:36
Speaker 2: Bob, this is a question for the two of you.
• 26:39
Speaker 2: You know, little background crews. Bob did marry somebody who
• 26:42
Speaker 2: is a part of a sorority, a really great sorority
• 26:44
Speaker 2: at that. I'll start with you, Cruse, because Bob's married.
• 26:49
Speaker 2: He found his incredible wife. Cruz. If now at this
• 26:54
Speaker 2: point in your life you meet somebody who is a
• 26:58
Speaker 2: partist of a sorority that you're just like had a
• 27:01
Speaker 2: really bad taste in your mouth about in college, would
• 27:04
Speaker 2: that throw you off when it comes to a future
• 27:07
Speaker 2: with her, or would that come to play at all?
• 27:10
Speaker 4: I mean, I think it would be on the back
• 27:12
Speaker 4: of my mind at some point, But at the end
• 27:15
Speaker 4: of the day, we're all different people in college than
• 27:17
Speaker 4: we are postcrad. I think, you know, I myself liked
• 27:20
Speaker 4: to party and I wouldn't want someone holding that against me,
• 27:23
Speaker 4: and if about things that I did in college, So
• 27:26
Speaker 4: I would approach it with an open mind. But you know,
• 27:28
Speaker 4: it's definitely still there lingering.
• 27:30
Speaker 2: Bob, would you have taken a second, you know, thought
• 27:35
Speaker 2: if the sorority that was mentioned wasn't one that you
• 27:38
Speaker 2: had fond memories of, you.
• 27:41
  Speaker 3: Know, I don't know. I mean, it's funny when you
• 27:43
Speaker 3: asked Cruz that question, I was thinking. I was like,
• 27:46
  Speaker 3: did I care? I honestly didn't even care when I
• 27:49
Speaker 3: met Kenyon. I was forty when I met her, right,
• 27:51
Speaker 3: So at that point I was like, oh, whatever, but
• 27:54
  Speaker 3: I won't I won't lie.
• 27:55
Speaker 7: It did kind of.
• 27:57
Speaker 3: It was a pleasant surprise when she was like, oh yeah,
• 27:59
Speaker 3: I was. I was a Kapa and I'm like, no way.
• 28:02
Speaker 7: And we always had that with the.
• 28:03
Speaker 3: Cappus, you know, so there was like that that kind
• 28:05
Speaker 3: of positive reinforcement, I guess in a way where I
• 28:10
Speaker 3: was like, oh, kidding, you know what, she'd probably be
• 28:12
Speaker 3: friends with a lot of my friends from college who
• 28:13
Speaker 3: are Cappus, you know, or whatever. In my mind not
• 28:16
Speaker 3: and there again not saying that everyone's alike that's in
• 28:18
Speaker 3: a fraternity or sorority by you know, by.
• 28:20
Speaker 2: Three Greek letters assigned to it.
• 28:22
Speaker 3: But but yeah, it was. It was a pleasant surprise.
• 28:26
Speaker 3: And and I'll say, like then you then you tack
• 28:28
Speaker 3: on like when I when I first met Sugarman, which
• 28:31
Speaker 3: was around that same well, I guess no, it's it
• 28:34
Speaker 3: was a suitor that I knew Sugarman, but knowing she
• 28:36
Speaker 3: was a Kappa cal cal you know Kappa, and finding
• 28:39
Speaker 3: out the canyon was, I was like, hey, you know,
• 28:42
Speaker 3: this is an interesting connection. So yeah, I think I
• 28:44
Speaker 3: think there is there's a positive or that negative reinforcement
• 28:47
Speaker 3: probably that comes with it, but it doesn't necessarily define
• 28:49
Speaker 3: who you think that person is going to be.
• 28:51
  Speaker 5: At that point.
• 28:53
Speaker 2: Cruise, I got a final question for you. Yea, when
• 28:58
Speaker 2: you think back on your time at the University of Washington,
• 29:02
Speaker 2: you think about specifically your time in the fraternity associating
• 29:08
Speaker 2: with the sororities, what memory comes to mind that kind
• 29:13
Speaker 2: of encapitulates it all.
• 29:15
Speaker 4: Oh, okay, I think this would be a week one
• 29:19
Speaker 4: freshman year. Everyone has just recently moved into their fraternity
• 29:24
Speaker 4: of aurority and you've got the big first on campus
• 29:28
Speaker 4: game day Saturday morning. Usually it's the they schedule some preseason,
• 29:34
Speaker 4: but usually this is like the first big one. And
• 29:37
Speaker 4: there's a tradition that we do every year at the
• 29:40
Speaker 4: University of Washington where you wake up early on that
• 29:43
Speaker 4: Saturday morning before any of the pretty gaming or drinking
• 29:46
Speaker 4: has begun, and you grab all the pots and pans
• 29:50
Speaker 4: in your fraternity and you walk over to your sister's
• 29:52
Speaker 4: sorority house and you wake them up at six am
• 29:56
Speaker 4: and you're going down the hallways, going in the rooms,
• 29:58
Speaker 4: banging the pots and pans, and they have no idea
• 30:00
Speaker 4: it's coming, and they're coming out like in their pajamas,
• 30:03
Speaker 4: just woking up and seeing all these new guys from
• 30:06
Speaker 4: the returning for the first time. And then slowly, like
• 30:08
Speaker 4: over the years, you get to like become best friends
• 30:10
Speaker 4: with some of these girls and eventually you know whether
• 30:13
Speaker 4: you're in relationships with them or whatnot. But like that,
• 30:18
Speaker 4: that's like the first memory of like the meeting point
• 30:21
Speaker 4: for everyone. So I think that's really cool and also
• 30:23
  Speaker 4: really funny.
• 30:25
Speaker 2: Yeah, like it. It would feel to me like an
• 30:29
Speaker 2: adrenaline rush too. You're already excited to be at university,
• 30:33
Speaker 2: you're excited to be in your house, and you're excited
• 30:35
Speaker 2: to meet the girls, and now this is the way
• 30:38
Speaker 2: you do it in this like very drama. I get it.
• 30:41
Speaker 2: It would fit to be this incredible memorable experience. Cruz,
• 30:46
Speaker 2: thanks for joining us today. Thanks for talking about your
• 30:48
Speaker 2: experience in Greek life. We appreciate it and we wish
• 30:53
  Speaker 2: you the best.
• 30:54
Speaker 7: Yeah, of course, thanks for having me on.
• 30:56
  Speaker 5: Thanks cruise, Bob.
• 30:57
Speaker 2: You asked me the question, what if I learned so far,
• 31:00
Speaker 2: what have I taken from this? I want to throw
• 31:02
Speaker 2: it right back to you as we close up.
• 31:05
Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, I feel like.
• 31:08
Speaker 3: It's interesting, right because everyone goes through their experience with sororities, opternities,
• 31:13
Speaker 3: and I'm sure they come out the other side of
• 31:15
Speaker 3: it richer in some ways, whether it's a full a
• 31:18
Speaker 3: full run, or whether it's a shortened experience you know,
• 31:21
Speaker 3: like yours was, or whatever it might be. I mean,
• 31:23
Speaker 3: I think everyone comes through it with a different experience.
• 31:26
Speaker 3: But one of the things that I felt was kind
• 31:28
Speaker 3: of was kind of interesting almost as a through line
• 31:31
Speaker 3: on the whole thing, was, you know, there were definitely
• 31:35
Speaker 3: some really fun memories and some really you know, fun experiences,
• 31:39
Speaker 3: and a lot of them were tied to the whole
• 31:41
Speaker 3: social experiment that is Greek life, right, So I mean
• 31:44
Speaker 3: from that perspective, you go into this whole situation and
• 31:47
  Speaker 3: you know, it's it's kind of and it's it's actually
• 31:49
Speaker 3: kind of funny when you think about like when someone
• 31:51
Speaker 3: would say, oh, you were on the Bachelor, why'd you
• 31:53
Speaker 3: have to go on a TV show to meet girls? Right,
• 31:55
Speaker 3: And you're like, uh, that's not exactly why I did it.
• 31:59
Speaker 3: But it's also like that the Greek life. You know,
• 32:00
Speaker 3: one of the things that you always hear is this
• 32:02
Speaker 3: common threat is like, you know, well, I'm not paying
• 32:04
Speaker 3: for my friends, right. It's like the thing people used
• 32:06
Speaker 3: to say about Greek life, and and you know, you
• 32:10
Speaker 3: start hearing it, it's like, I don't think anyone that
• 32:12
Speaker 3: was on this call looked like someone who had to
• 32:13
Speaker 3: pay for a front, right. So at the end of
• 32:15
Speaker 3: the day, they were someone who went into it because
• 32:17
Speaker 3: they wanted to have that social interaction. They wanted to
• 32:19
Speaker 3: make a big school smaller. They everyone has their own
• 32:22
Speaker 3: reasons for wanting to do it. And one of the
• 32:25
Speaker 3: things I thought was really interesting was that everybody that
• 32:28
Speaker 3: was on this call today, even those who weren't in
• 32:32
Speaker 3: Greek life or dabbled and didn't do it are someone
• 32:35
Speaker 3: that I feel like I could be friends with, Like
• 32:37
Speaker 3: someone I feel like I could have a nice friendship
• 32:39
Speaker 3: with and willing to kind of put it out there
• 32:41
Speaker 3: and you know, some fun stories to tell and you know,
• 32:44
Speaker 3: all great experiences. So the college experience is what you
• 32:46
Speaker 3: make it, just like Greek life, it is what you
• 32:48
  Speaker 3: make it.
• 32:49
Speaker 2: Right, it is. And you asked a really good question earlier, Bob,
• 32:53
Speaker 2: that I wanted to come back to and answer. When
• 32:57
Speaker 2: I think about my time at school and the people
• 33:03
  Speaker 2: I met, I am very thankful. I mean I joked
• 33:06
Speaker 2: about it. I'm very thankful for the Zetas who helped
• 33:10
Speaker 2: feed me lunch and just like really kind of like
• 33:13
Speaker 2: boosting my confidence. I don't know if they even knew
• 33:15
Speaker 2: they were, but just boosting it just by having me
• 33:17
Speaker 2: over that meant a lot to me. Also, the other
• 33:21
Speaker 2: houses that you know, maybe would invite you over to
• 33:24
Speaker 2: a party when after you know, things went south with
• 33:28
Speaker 2: my experience. But I also think there was a big
• 33:32
Speaker 2: attraction to people that were a part of sororities for
• 33:35
Speaker 2: me because of their ability to get along with other
• 33:39
Speaker 2: women and get along with other women in a close
• 33:42
Speaker 2: proximity in a fairly competitive environment and do it with
• 33:46
Speaker 2: like joy and friendship and commitment. I always have found
• 33:50
Speaker 2: that attractive. It was very important for me when I
• 33:52
Speaker 2: met Jessica to find somebody that had a deep bench
• 33:56
Speaker 2: of friends and people that she relied upon, because it's
• 34:01
Speaker 2: not common for everybody. It's not everybody's story. But I
• 34:04
Speaker 2: think when you get into the sororities, you could find
• 34:08
Speaker 2: the people that were the bridge and confrontation and also
• 34:15
Speaker 2: the gatherer to bring the women together. And that was
• 34:18
Speaker 2: always such an attractive quality that came out a lot
• 34:21
Speaker 2: in sororities, and so I do think that stood out
• 34:24
Speaker 2: more than anything else. That was always very like attractive
• 34:29
  Speaker 2: to me.
• 34:30
Speaker 5: Sure, yeah, that makes sense. I get it, I get it.
• 34:34
Speaker 3: I like that answer.
• 34:35
Speaker 2: Bob and I have been sitting here today talking from
• 34:38
Speaker 2: a male's perspective on sorority life. If we offended you
• 34:41
Speaker 2: in any way, we're sorry. We probably didn't even know
• 34:43
Speaker 2: we did it. We didn't mean to. We also had
• 34:45
Speaker 2: some incredible guests who are fans of the Dirty Rush
• 34:48
Speaker 2: show call in, some people that we knew, some people
• 34:52
Speaker 2: that we don't know, but people that are deeply invested
• 34:55
Speaker 2: into this show and want to share it with you
• 34:57
Speaker 2: and share their perspectives with you. So continue to listen
• 35:00
Speaker 2: in to the Dirty Rush podcast as the regular better
• 35:04
Speaker 2: host come back very soon. Until next time, I've been Ben,
• 35:08
  Speaker 2: I've been Bob,
