Transcript
- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 106! We've talked about family a lot lately. Lucas: Yeah — mother, father, brother, sister, husband, wife. Today we're adding two more: son and daughter. Luna: Oh perfect. I was just thinking about that. So how do you say 'son'? Lucas: In Amharic, son is ልጅ ወንድ. Listen: ልጅ ወንድ. Luna: ልጅ ወንድ. That's kind of like 'child male', right? Lucas: Exactly. ልጅ means child, ወንድ means male. Put them together — ልጅ ወንድ. Luna: Okay, ልጅ ወንድ. And daughter? Lucas: Daughter is ልጅ ሴት. ሴት means female. ልጅ ሴት. Luna: ልጅ ሴት. I like how logical it is. Lucas: It really is. Now, if you want to ask someone 'Do you have children?', you say ልጆች አሉህ? Slow: ልጆች አሉህ? Luna: ልጆች አሉህ? That's the plural 'children', right? Lucas: Right. ልጆች is children. And አሉህ is 'do you have?' for a male. So ልጆች አሉህ? — Do you have children? Luna: Got it. And if I want to say 'I have a son'? Lucas: You'd say ልጅ ወንድ አለኝ. ልጅ ወንድ አለኝ. Luna: ልጅ ወንድ አለኝ. 'I have a son.' And 'I have a daughter'? Lucas: ልጅ ሴት አለኝ. Try it. Luna: ልጅ ሴት አለኝ. That's smooth. Lucas: You're getting really good at this. Luna: Thanks! And you know, this show has helped me so much. I love that there are no ads — it feels like we're just hanging out. Lucas: Yeah, we keep it ad-free on purpose. If you want to support that, you can always do buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. It helps us keep making these episodes. Luna: Totally. Every bit helps. But for now, let's practice more. Lucas: Let's do it. So imagine someone asks you ልጆች አሉህ? What do you say? Luna: If I have a son, I'd say ልጅ ወንድ አለኝ. If I have a daughter, ልጅ ሴት አለኝ. And if I have both? Lucas: You could say ልጅ ወንድ እና ልጅ ሴት አሉኝ. 'I have a son and a daughter.' Luna: ልጅ ወንድ እና ልጅ ሴት አሉኝ. That's a mouthful but I love it. Lucas: Let's break it down. እና means 'and'. So it's son and daughter. Luna: Okay, so ልጅ ወንድ እና ልጅ ሴት አሉኝ. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's do a quick roleplay. I'll ask you: ልጆች አሉህ? Luna: ልጅ ወንድ አለኝ. How was that? Lucas: Flawless. Now you ask me. Luna: ልጆች አሉህ? Lucas: አዎ, ልጅ ሴት አለኝ. Yes, I have a daughter. Luna: Aww, that's sweet. So now I can talk about sons and daughters. Lucas: Absolutely. And remember, you can use these in any family conversation. Let's review all the phrases one more time. Luna: Great. Son: ልጅ ወንድ. Daughter: ልጅ ሴት. Lucas: Do you have children? ልጆች አሉህ? Luna: I have a son: ልጅ ወንድ አለኝ. I have a daughter: ልጅ ሴት አለኝ. Lucas: And I have a son and a daughter: ልጅ ወንድ እና ልጅ ሴት አሉኝ. Luna: That's a lot of progress in one episode. Lucas: That's how we do it here at Fexingo. Small steps, big results. Luna: Practice these phrases with your friends and family. See you next time! Lucas: Thanks for listening. Keep practicing and we'll talk again soon.
