- 0:05Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Jim Hayes alongside Lance Lynn. Lance, you look ten and
- 0:14Speaker 1: ready to go. How are you, my friend?
- 0:16Speaker 2: I am doing great. You know. The summer is good
- 0:18Speaker 2: to me. I ten very easily, So it works out.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Well, that's good. The Cardinals have an off day today.
- 0:26Speaker 1: They just got done dropping two out of three in
- 0:31Speaker 1: three straight series. Right they dropped two or three to
- 0:34Speaker 1: Kansas City, two of three to the Diamondbacks, two of
- 0:39Speaker 1: three to the Marlins, and now the tough part of
- 0:42Speaker 1: their schedule they go to Atlanta, very good team, and
- 0:47Speaker 1: they'll be going to the Cubs, who are starting to
- 0:50Speaker 1: play pretty good baseball. So my first question for you, Lance,
- 0:54Speaker 1: because you always say this, and so one thing I
- 0:57Speaker 1: always remember, baseball even things out. So we saw the
- 1:02Speaker 1: Cardinals at some point at ten over five hundred. They
- 1:06Speaker 1: just won yesterday, so that's good. So they're back to
- 1:08Speaker 1: five over five hundred. We see a little leak in
- 1:12Speaker 1: certain parts of the game. Is this baseball starting to
- 1:15Speaker 1: even out on the Cardinals?
- 1:18Speaker 2: I think it's a little bit of everything. But like
- 1:20Speaker 2: you look at the they were overachieving to start the year.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I think everyone could admit that guys were doing things
- 1:30Speaker 2: that you know we would hope for. But the question is,
- 1:33Speaker 2: is all year long, as are the things that we
- 1:35Speaker 2: hope for going to stay, you know, going the way
- 1:39Speaker 2: that they were going. And I think you're starting to
- 1:41Speaker 2: see different types of things pop up which you are
- 1:44Speaker 2: expecting with a young team, a team that is in
- 1:48Speaker 2: a rebuild, as we know they are. So I think
- 1:51Speaker 2: that for them to even be five games over I
- 1:54Speaker 2: five hundred with what we started the season looking at
- 1:59Speaker 2: is a positive. So we need to think of it. Hey,
- 2:01Speaker 2: we're still seeing a lot of positive things. Did we
- 2:05Speaker 2: expect him to be a ten game over five hundred
- 2:08Speaker 2: team at the end of the year. I don't think
- 2:10Speaker 2: we did. So they're kind of on pace for better
- 2:15Speaker 2: than what we hope for to start the year. So
- 2:16Speaker 2: we just need to realize that's what we're at. And
- 2:18Speaker 2: now we're going to start to see the bumps and
- 2:20Speaker 2: bruises of having a young team and the course of
- 2:22Speaker 2: a long season with a young team is starting to
- 2:25Speaker 2: show up. And that's part of this time of year too.
- 2:28Speaker 2: And I you know, they'll regroup a little bit after
- 2:30Speaker 2: the All Star break. Everybody does, and you know, see
- 2:33Speaker 2: what they have down the stretch, So.
- 2:36Speaker 1: I think I should have said nine game. I think
- 2:38Speaker 1: that was the high water mark for the Cardinals. I
- 2:40Speaker 1: think every time they try to get to ten, they
- 2:43Speaker 1: end up losing the game. And that brings us to
- 2:45Speaker 1: our Daily Dinger segment, brought to you by FanDuel. Let's
- 2:49Speaker 1: talk about Jordan Walker, who in my opinion, should be
- 2:52Speaker 1: an All Star having a tremendous season and you know,
- 2:55Speaker 1: based on the fact that he was really good and
- 2:58Speaker 1: then lost it and put in a lot of getting
- 3:00Speaker 1: back to where he is today and he's having a
- 3:03Speaker 1: monster season. But you know, based on his past, people
- 3:06Speaker 1: panic when things go slow. So in the month of June,
- 3:10Speaker 1: he's having a slow them up. He's only hitting two
- 3:13Speaker 1: ninety two, but he has it homer in twelve games,
- 3:16Speaker 1: and the strikeout rate is starting to jump, and we're
- 3:19Speaker 1: seeing him chase more than he has and the heads
- 3:22Speaker 1: that he's getting have been on the ground instead of
- 3:25Speaker 1: you know, crushing it into the gaps or over the wall.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Is there is it rational to be concerned about Jordan
- 3:33Speaker 1: Walker at this point?
- 3:38Speaker 2: Here's the thing is, it's you can get concerned because
- 3:41Speaker 2: of the past, right the things you've seen in the past,
- 3:44Speaker 2: and the things that we've seen in the past are
- 3:45Speaker 2: starting to creep back in. So the question is it
- 3:49Speaker 2: just a little spell where they're pitching him different and
- 3:52Speaker 2: then he which is causing him to chase out of
- 3:54Speaker 2: the strike zone, or is he going back to who
- 3:56Speaker 2: he's been. If he's going back to who he's been,
- 3:59Speaker 2: we're we're in a we're in a bad spot, right,
- 4:01Speaker 2: that's not what we wanted. But who he's been the
- 4:03Speaker 2: course of this year has been awesome. So every hitter
- 4:07Speaker 2: goes through the spell where they you know, have a
- 4:09Speaker 2: homeless streak, or they just get pitched a little different,
- 4:11Speaker 2: or you run into just a certain little thing. So
- 4:15Speaker 2: I'm going to say it's too early to say, oh,
- 4:18Speaker 2: you know, he's going back to who he's been the
- 4:20Speaker 2: last couple of years. I think it's over the course
- 4:22Speaker 2: of the season, you have stretches of games and two
- 4:26Speaker 2: week periods where it just doesn't quite go the way
- 4:29Speaker 2: you want it to. So my question moving forward is, Okay,
- 4:34Speaker 2: it's just just going to be a blip, or we
- 4:36Speaker 2: kind of we saw him at the highest of highs
- 4:38Speaker 2: and then now we're kind of going to get back
- 4:40Speaker 2: to who he is. Hopefully it's not what he's been
- 4:45Speaker 2: the last couple of years where he's had to go
- 4:46Speaker 2: open down, but hopefully he can find something in the
- 4:48Speaker 2: middle to you know, we saw how great he can be,
- 4:52Speaker 2: so we just need to find, Hey, what's going to
- 4:54Speaker 2: be our average, our normal day to day and then
- 4:58Speaker 2: we're going to have our spikes of hot streaks where
- 4:59Speaker 2: we have home runs and stuff like that. So I
- 5:02Speaker 2: think it's too early to you know, the alarm bells
- 5:04Speaker 2: to go off. I'm saying, oh, no, he's doing this.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I think it's you know, you're a couple months in
- 5:08Speaker 2: and things change, Pitchers are maybe pitching a little different,
- 5:11Speaker 2: stuff like that, and then those are the everflows or
- 5:14Speaker 2: the flows of the season of Hey, you're gonna have
- 5:16Speaker 2: to make adjustments now too. So I think we'll be
- 5:18Speaker 2: able to do that. But you know, it's only time
- 5:21Speaker 2: will tell.
- 5:22Speaker 1: See. I kind of think, based on where he's been
- 5:24Speaker 1: and where he is now, Jordan Walker is a different guy. Look,
- 5:29Speaker 1: it's a mentally tough game, right major League Baseball. You
- 5:32Speaker 1: know that better than I do. I just think he's
- 5:35Speaker 1: in a better place handling it. I've talked to him.
- 5:37Speaker 1: I think he's in control. There is a grind that
- 5:40Speaker 1: goes on with the regular season. They gave him yesterday
- 5:44Speaker 1: off figure and they'll get two for one because today
- 5:47Speaker 1: is an off day. And I also look at, you know,
- 5:49Speaker 1: other people's past too. If you have a terrible month
- 5:53Speaker 1: to start the season, right, you're hitting one twenty, but
- 5:57Speaker 1: it's early on and you haven't had other good months
- 6:01Speaker 1: to kind of balance that out, people panic, And with
- 6:04Speaker 1: Jordan Walker it's not that, but it is people looking
- 6:07Speaker 1: he struck out with the bases loaded the other day,
- 6:10Speaker 1: which he hasn't done during this hot start to the season.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I just figure there's a grind to the season, and
- 6:17Speaker 1: maybe it is. We gave him a couple of days
- 6:20Speaker 1: off and let him rust up. That's part of it too,
- 6:23Speaker 1: isn't it lends? Yeah?
- 6:26Speaker 2: I mean I think anytime during the year, you're starting
- 6:28Speaker 2: to get into that point where the games are starting
- 6:30Speaker 2: to build up, the Indians are starting to build up.
- 6:32Speaker 2: So I think all of it entails that seasons go
- 6:37Speaker 2: and as we've always said, everything's even itself out right.
- 6:40Speaker 2: So he's hitting two ninety two with three home runs
- 6:42Speaker 2: in June. If you're telling someone, hey, Jordan Walker hit
- 6:46Speaker 2: two ninety two in a month of June to start
- 6:49Speaker 2: the year. Everyone be like, yes, God, he's figured it out,
- 6:52Speaker 2: So we got to kind of pump the brakes here.
- 6:54Speaker 2: It's like, hey, is you going to hit ten home
- 6:56Speaker 2: runs every month? Probably not, but he's had such a
- 6:59Speaker 2: good start to the year. His numbers are right where
- 7:01Speaker 2: they need to go. Next thing, you know, you look
- 7:03Speaker 2: at July. He might hit two eighty in July. But
- 7:06Speaker 2: if he hits ten home runs in July, is everyone happier?
- 7:10Speaker 3: You know?
- 7:10Speaker 2: It's just kind of one of those things where we
- 7:12Speaker 2: just got to figure it out, and he will as
- 7:14Speaker 2: as the course of the year goes on, and you
- 7:16Speaker 2: need breathers. So it's a good idea to give him,
- 7:18Speaker 2: you know, two for one on the off day and
- 7:20Speaker 2: all that yesterday to today. So but when you're looking
- 7:24Speaker 2: up to start the year, if someone said Jordan Walker
- 7:27Speaker 2: hit two ninety two in the month of June, everyone like, good,
- 7:30Speaker 2: he's figured it out. So we need to kind of
- 7:33Speaker 2: chill a little bit too at that point. So it's like, hey,
- 7:36Speaker 2: is he going to hit three fifty and hit twelve
- 7:38Speaker 2: home runs every month? No, because he nobody does that, Like,
- 7:44Speaker 2: so we need to we need to chill here and say,
- 7:47Speaker 2: all right, hey, he's hit in two ninety two this month.
- 7:50Speaker 2: We're okay, We're in a good spot.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Said, yeah, how many major leaguers would kill to have
- 7:57Speaker 1: a two ninety two month of June? Most of them?
- 8:00Speaker 1: All Right, Daily Dingers, I'm gonna go with Jordan Walker
- 8:03Speaker 1: tomorrow they faced Perez of the Braves. He's a lefty.
- 8:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna say Walker has a couple of days rest,
- 8:11Speaker 1: that's a little quicker. He's gonna go deep. How about you?
- 8:15Speaker 2: You're looking you're looking for his fourth hone running July
- 8:17Speaker 2: or jin. So he's back on it, got it. I'm
- 8:20Speaker 2: gonna go Herrera. I'm gonna go Herrera tomorrow.
- 8:23Speaker 1: So I like that.
- 8:24Speaker 2: I'm gonna go right.
- 8:25Speaker 1: I like so. I like Herrera too. You know what
- 8:28Speaker 1: he's been doing is basically getting hit by pitches. Got
- 8:31Speaker 1: to use you on base percentage. And he's played in
- 8:34Speaker 1: every single game this season, one of fifteen players. Tough kid,
- 8:38Speaker 1: all right? Uh Swaiting for the fences with FanDuel. Just

- 9:10Speaker 1: A little better. I'm getting a little better with that,
- 9:12Speaker 1: all right, let's talk Michael McGreevy, who just pitched six
- 9:15Speaker 1: innings of scoreless baseball, and he seems to be getting better.
- 9:19Speaker 1: We talk about the grind of a season, right, and
- 9:21Speaker 1: this will be as full his first full season as
- 9:24Speaker 1: a starter in Major League baseball. This is a twenty
- 9:27Speaker 1: five year old that looks to me like you know,
- 9:30Speaker 1: an eight year veteran already. If there's trouble in an
- 9:33Speaker 1: inny he walks a guy, or someone kicks a ball,
- 9:36Speaker 1: there's an error, whatever, traffic, he just seems to be
- 9:40Speaker 1: in total control and will pinpoint his mast array of
- 9:43Speaker 1: pitches and get out of him. What are your thoughts
- 9:46Speaker 1: on what McGreevy is showing this season?
- 9:50Speaker 2: I love it, to be honest with you, I think
- 9:51Speaker 2: you saw a guy who's had a lot of success
- 9:53Speaker 2: in the minor leagues, and then when he would get
- 9:55Speaker 2: called up, he would throw the ball decently well every
- 9:59Speaker 2: chance he he just was never here for long enough
- 10:02Speaker 2: for us to see. I think his stuff plays a
- 10:04Speaker 2: lot better at the major league level than anyone I
- 10:09Speaker 2: think expected it to. He doesn't get you know, doesn't
- 10:12Speaker 2: get hit hard. The hard contact's not there. He might
- 10:14Speaker 2: not strike out as many people as everyone would like,
- 10:17Speaker 2: but he's able to mix and match pitches sides of
- 10:21Speaker 2: the plate and do everything he needs to do to
- 10:23Speaker 2: navigate ways through lineups. And he's very smart. My last
- 10:28Speaker 2: year with the Cardinals in spring training, he was always
- 10:31Speaker 2: picking in everyone's brand. He wasn't scared to ask questions,
- 10:35Speaker 2: and he wasn't scared to learn. Guys with the ability
- 10:38Speaker 2: to throw the ball where they want to, are not
- 10:40Speaker 2: afraid to learn things and want to learn things usually
- 10:44Speaker 2: have a lot of success. So I'm not surprised by
- 10:47Speaker 2: any of this. Just from my time with him as
- 10:50Speaker 2: a teammate. He was always like wanting to know something
- 10:54Speaker 2: or learn something, and you don't really see that out
- 10:57Speaker 2: of young guys. I think he was maybe one of
- 10:59Speaker 2: the best pitchers in the minor league the year before.
- 11:02Speaker 2: He was trying to get better. He wasn't you know.
- 11:04Speaker 2: He's never like sitting on what he did in the
- 11:07Speaker 2: past and all that, So I like what he's doing.
- 11:10Speaker 2: He's got the ability to pitch, and I think when
- 11:13Speaker 2: you have the ability to pitch, you can get out.
- 11:15Speaker 2: And he's showing the ability.
- 11:16Speaker 4: To do that.
- 11:17Speaker 1: And he's a confident guy, and he's a little different.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Matthew Libertore is the same way. I think we'd We've
- 11:24Speaker 1: talked about this before, but if you wanted to interview
- 11:28Speaker 1: McGreevy on the day of a start, he would do it,
- 11:31Speaker 1: except for the fact that you don't do that. Other
- 11:34Speaker 1: starters hate that, and certain starting pitchers won't even look
- 11:38Speaker 1: at their own teammates on days at a starter. McGreevy
- 11:41Speaker 1: I always say, I don't even make eye contact with
- 11:43Speaker 1: that day starter. And there are times he'll try to
- 11:45Speaker 1: just strike up her conversation because that's who he is.
- 11:48Speaker 1: He's just relaxed and doesn't want to make it different
- 11:51Speaker 1: than any other day as a starter. I don't remember
- 11:56Speaker 1: you being totally locked in, but how are you on
- 11:58Speaker 1: the day of a start? I try to remember that well.
- 12:01Speaker 2: I mean, early on in my career I learned from
- 12:05Speaker 2: Uh what carp and Wayna who like they they walked
- 12:08Speaker 2: through the door with their game face on, and I
- 12:10Speaker 2: was like, man, I tried to do that when I
- 12:12Speaker 2: was young, and it like it wore me out all day,
- 12:15Speaker 2: if that makes sense. So I think as I got
- 12:19Speaker 2: older and got more you know, trying to be who
- 12:22Speaker 2: I was, I was, Uh I would you know, Lackie
- 12:25Speaker 2: taught me a lot because Lackie would show up and
- 12:27Speaker 2: he would be normal, lacking and you kind of build
- 12:29Speaker 2: into your start as the day goes on and then
- 12:32Speaker 2: kind of lock in that last hour before you before
- 12:35Speaker 2: you get ready to go out and stuff like that.
- 12:37Speaker 2: So I always wanted to be the same day and
- 12:40Speaker 2: day out and then you you know, you could see
- 12:43Speaker 2: when you start building in and Westbrook taught me a
- 12:45Speaker 2: lot of that too, where it's like, hey, be your
- 12:48Speaker 2: normal old self, uh, you know, do whatever you got
- 12:51Speaker 2: to do, and then that last hour once you're starting
- 12:53Speaker 2: to get ready, it's it's go time and all that.
- 12:55Speaker 2: So I love that. Uh. You know, back in the day,
- 12:58Speaker 2: you would be you get in trouble if you or
- 13:00Speaker 2: if you're laughing at some point during the day and enjoying,
- 13:03Speaker 2: you know, being around your teammates. Now, it's like, hey,
- 13:05Speaker 2: be who you are and as long as you're ready
- 13:07Speaker 2: to go and prepared, and then that's all that matters.
- 13:09Speaker 2: And these guys are prepared. Both those guys are very smart.
- 13:13Speaker 2: They're not afraid to be who they are and they're
- 13:15Speaker 2: not afraid of the situation they have going on. So
- 13:18Speaker 2: they are prepared. And if you're prepared, then you can
- 13:21Speaker 2: be relaxed and you can go be your normal self
- 13:23Speaker 2: and then go get ready to when its game time.
- 13:24Speaker 2: I like it.
- 13:26Speaker 1: I can't remember if it was Kyle Lowsho told me this,
- 13:28Speaker 1: but one of your former teammates told me that they
- 13:31Speaker 1: didn't want to spend energy making it a different routine
- 13:36Speaker 1: than there every day in the clubhiuse So it didn't
- 13:39Speaker 1: make sense either.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Looser Westy Locier Westbrook told me the same thing. I
- 13:44Speaker 2: think it's both of them together. They're like, man, you
- 13:46Speaker 2: got to figure out who you are. Because you spend
- 13:48Speaker 2: more energy trying to be something you're not. It takes
- 13:51Speaker 2: away from what you're trying to do. So I think
- 13:53Speaker 2: that's the main thing that you're seeing a lot of
- 13:55Speaker 2: these guys is Hey, they're being who they are, which
- 13:57Speaker 2: it helps them naturally go out there and compete, and
- 14:00Speaker 2: they don't have to try to fake it or be
- 14:01Speaker 2: something they're not.
- 14:03Speaker 1: So dustin May's twenty eight, I having a good season,
- 14:07Speaker 1: back to back starts of throwing one hundred pitches, all right,
- 14:11Speaker 1: and then his last start after that got hit around
- 14:15Speaker 1: a little bit, and then they skipped him in the
- 14:17Speaker 1: rotation because he's dealing with back discomfort. Throwing over one
- 14:23Speaker 1: hundred pitches, for you, if you did it a couple
- 14:26Speaker 1: times in a row, did that take any toll on you?
- 14:30Speaker 1: Or should pictures in this world be ready to throw
- 14:35Speaker 1: one hundred and be able to bounce back? Well?
- 14:38Speaker 2: I think I did thirty five straight starts over the
- 14:41Speaker 2: course of two seasons.
- 14:43Speaker 1: So throwing over one hundred pitches, Yeah.
- 14:47Speaker 2: I think when I was in Texas, I think it
- 14:48Speaker 2: was thirty over thirty five straight between what nineteen twenty
- 14:53Speaker 2: and twenty one. Oh yeah, because it was COVID year,
- 14:55Speaker 2: So I started out first game of the year COVID
- 14:57Speaker 2: throwing one hundred pitches. So that's what it was. In
- 14:59Speaker 2: Grand coming up. If you don't throw, if you don't
- 15:01Speaker 2: throw at least one hundred pitches, then you took a
- 15:03Speaker 2: day off. Is what Lackie always said, I did even
- 15:06Speaker 2: throw a hundred pitches, you'd even pitch? So I am
- 15:11Speaker 2: probably not the person asked, but I will say this
- 15:13Speaker 2: a guy who has not made a bulk amount of
- 15:18Speaker 2: starts in his career and stuff like that, and this
- 15:21Speaker 2: day and age of pitching, Yes, it can take a toll.
- 15:25Speaker 2: And it takes a toll when you do it back
- 15:28Speaker 2: to back or multiple starts in a row. So I
- 15:31Speaker 2: think that if you're nowadays, they look at it as Okay,
- 15:34Speaker 2: you threw one hundred, we have an extra day. You know,
- 15:38Speaker 2: let's keep you under one hundred. So next time we
- 15:40Speaker 2: have a normal five days, then they try not to
- 15:43Speaker 2: get you over one hundred. So yeah, it eats at you,
- 15:46Speaker 2: and it tear it, and you know, it tears the
- 15:48Speaker 2: body down a little bit, stuff like that, especially if
- 15:50Speaker 2: that's something that for him. Right, we're trying to make
- 15:54Speaker 2: sure a guy makes thirty starts in a season. That's
- 15:57Speaker 2: what we want out of him. So for them to
- 16:00Speaker 2: one hundred pitch thing can be a thing. And you know,
- 16:03Speaker 2: some guys are in that boat where if hey, if
- 16:04Speaker 2: you can throw ninety and those six innings, don't push
- 16:08Speaker 2: them to a hundred because you're going to have these
- 16:10Speaker 2: things happen, so you just got to know who that
- 16:13Speaker 2: guy is. And that's kind of you know, what they're
- 16:15Speaker 2: seeing is like, hey, he might not be a guy
- 16:17Speaker 2: we need to push over one hundred more than maybe
- 16:20Speaker 2: once once every three or four starts.
- 16:23Speaker 1: And typically cap to Ali marmel and and the Cardinals
- 16:27Speaker 1: because last season they had no injuries in their starting
- 16:31Speaker 1: rotation and none so far this season, and we're pretty
- 16:35Speaker 1: deep and you don't see that anywhere around Major League Baseball.
- 16:38Speaker 1: So there is some to that, right, managing your rotation
- 16:42Speaker 1: for the long run as opposed to trying to get
- 16:44Speaker 1: the most in that one start.
- 16:47Speaker 5: No.
- 16:47Speaker 2: One hundred percent, And I think you got to tip
- 16:48Speaker 2: your cap to the training staff in Saint Louis too.
- 16:50Speaker 2: If there's some of the best trainers I've ever had,
- 16:52Speaker 2: and they do a great job of creating a routine
- 16:55Speaker 2: and a program for each pitcher that's individualized to them.
- 16:59Speaker 2: So between Ali, Dusty and training staff, they have a
- 17:04Speaker 2: great a great way of going about things, and you're
- 17:07Speaker 2: seeing it by the health of their starting pitchers. You know,
- 17:10Speaker 2: sometimes that's luck. But I also think they put a
- 17:12Speaker 2: lot of time and effort and making sure that they
- 17:14Speaker 2: take care of each guy individually, Like you said, everybody.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Some people can throw one hundred, some people can't. So
- 17:19Speaker 2: they're doing that, whether it's training, staff, coaches and all
- 17:22Speaker 2: that working together. So the whole group's got a good
- 17:25Speaker 2: plan right there. And I think that's why you're seeing
- 17:27Speaker 2: the health that you are are seeing.
- 17:30Speaker 1: An old friend of ours, it's a new gid. We're
- 17:32Speaker 1: going to talk about that after we take a quick break.
- 17:35Speaker 1: You're watching Cardinal Territory on the Foul Territory Network.
- 17:40Speaker 6: People dehydration sucks, quints, electrolyte stick packs to the rescue.
- 17:46Speaker 6: I order them, I use them all of the time.
- 17:49Speaker 3: That somebody who may or may not have had some
- 17:52Speaker 3: adult beverages in their life. The next day. You know
- 17:54Speaker 3: our flavor, I like watermelon, and I don't like watermelon.
- 17:57Speaker 3: I'll go raspberry and it helps me to get I
- 18:00Speaker 3: citrus salt in. But if I do, it helps me
- 18:03Speaker 3: to get back to normal, feeling good and ready to
- 18:05Speaker 3: go the next day.
- 18:06Speaker 6: Yep, tough workout or dry them out in the morning,

- 18:42Speaker 1: Lance when we get a hey, look goots like that? Hi, Kyle,
- 18:50Speaker 1: So I was just gonna ask a Lance if we
- 18:53Speaker 1: have a cameo in our show from aj Prazinski, do
- 18:56Speaker 1: you think the views go up?
- 19:00Speaker 2: Not for Cardinal Territory.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Now, he was in great Cardinal Mirror app for Apple season. Kyle,
- 19:07Speaker 1: How are you, buddy?
- 19:09Speaker 5: I'm doing really well. It's been a busy couple weeks
- 19:13Speaker 5: for us here. We just got back last night from
- 19:16Speaker 5: a race weekend that was a lot of fun. Uh,
- 19:19Speaker 5: and we've been moving into some kids dentist appointments.
- 19:22Speaker 6: Today.
- 19:24Speaker 5: The hardwood floors of the house are being stayed, so
- 19:26Speaker 5: that's where I just came from. So we got a
- 19:28Speaker 5: lot of moving and shaking going on. I was intrigued here.
- 19:31Speaker 5: I was in the green room listening to the last
- 19:34Speaker 5: part of the Dustin May Talk. So that was good.
- 19:36Speaker 2: You guys crushed it.
- 19:38Speaker 5: But it's good to see you guys again.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Well, let me throw out a question to you about
- 19:44Speaker 1: McGreevy that I asked lancelint. McGreevy is a very confident
- 19:50Speaker 1: young man who does things his own way, and he's
- 19:53Speaker 1: been sensational this season as a starter. When you were
- 19:57Speaker 1: starting that day, did you shut up the world and
- 20:01Speaker 1: treated it as as like you were going in for
- 20:04Speaker 1: serious surgery or did you relax and just try to
- 20:08Speaker 1: take it as it as it was coming?
- 20:11Speaker 5: Never never super serious like I was going into surgery,
- 20:14Speaker 5: that's for sure.
- 20:15Speaker 2: That is not.
- 20:17Speaker 5: I couldn't operate like that, like I've seen teammates all
- 20:20Speaker 5: over the spectrum.
- 20:22Speaker 1: You know.
- 20:23Speaker 5: I don't know if you guys brought up Sonny Gray,
- 20:25Speaker 5: but I made the mistake of trying to say hello
- 20:27Speaker 5: to Sonny Gray at like four point thirty pm one
- 20:31Speaker 5: day and he had already like gotten out of his
- 20:33Speaker 5: street clothes, and I was like, I think I mentioned Alance.
- 20:36Speaker 5: I was like, how come you're allowed to talk to
- 20:38Speaker 5: Soney on the Star days and I can't. He didn't
- 20:41Speaker 5: even say hello to me. He walked right past me.
- 20:43Speaker 5: And Lance goes, well, we've got a little bit of history.
- 20:46Speaker 5: But if you want to talk to something on a
- 20:47Speaker 5: start day, make sure you get him before he's out
- 20:49Speaker 5: of his street clothes. I was think, Okay, sounds good.
- 20:52Speaker 5: Superman has got his cape on, so it's time to
- 20:54Speaker 5: go to work. Yeah, so that is That's not how
- 20:57Speaker 5: I was. Lance will tell you. I mean there were
- 21:00Speaker 5: times that I was much quieter because I might have
- 21:02Speaker 5: been looking at a report or you know, working with
- 21:05Speaker 5: a trainer like Lance just said the training staff was
- 21:07Speaker 5: awesome there. But even then, if you had something to
- 21:10Speaker 5: talk to me too, like talk to me about I
- 21:13Speaker 5: was pretty open and I tried to stay pretty relaxed,
- 21:16Speaker 5: you know all day.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Really, Sonny was dealing last night, right you think about this,
- 21:22Speaker 1: there's a guy who basically went on the record saying
- 21:25Speaker 1: I hated being a Yankee. I hate everybody battle to
- 21:28Speaker 1: New York and then last night he shoved, tell me,
- 21:32Speaker 1: tell me a story about Sonny Lance.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Oh Man, sunny, he's a beautiful creature. I don't know
- 21:40Speaker 2: how else said how else it said saying it, But
- 21:44Speaker 2: so I I was with Sonny in New York when
- 21:46Speaker 2: he struggled in New York and he was dealing with
- 21:49Speaker 2: came from the A's, where it was you know, hey,
- 21:51Speaker 2: it was fun. They were like, you know, they it's
- 21:53Speaker 2: different world in Oakland when they were with the A's
- 21:56Speaker 2: and doing what he's doing. And he went to New
- 21:58Speaker 2: York and they tried to like really like make him
- 22:02Speaker 2: do certain things. And Sonny is a very I think
- 22:06Speaker 2: that's when Sonny learned how to be who he is
- 22:09Speaker 2: by the by the struggles that he had in New York.
- 22:12Speaker 2: So that was the beauty of Sonny is he had
- 22:16Speaker 2: to go down a little bit in New York and
- 22:18Speaker 2: they tried to change everything about him and he didn't
- 22:20Speaker 2: like it. And then he figured out, all right, you know,
- 22:22Speaker 2: maybe I don't know who I am. And then he
- 22:23Speaker 2: went and found who he was, and that's why he's
- 22:25Speaker 2: had the even you know, been even better since he
- 22:27Speaker 2: left New York and kind of you know, figured out
- 22:29Speaker 2: who he was. But Sonny's a mathematician, like mad scientist.
- 22:34Speaker 2: I don't know how to explain it. Kyle knows what
- 22:36Speaker 2: I'm talking about. Every He's got a way to see everything.
- 22:40Speaker 2: Who was it Miles that he would Him and Miles
- 22:42Speaker 2: were like two totally opposite people, and to hear them
- 22:45Speaker 2: talking to each other was like the funniest thing because
- 22:48Speaker 2: they both think they're right at everything, and they both
- 22:51Speaker 2: have a reason to think they're right, and then they
- 22:53Speaker 2: refuse to hear the other one's point of view whatsoever.
- 22:57Speaker 2: And it was like, I would just love watching it.
- 22:59Speaker 2: And we're I think we were in Oakland when he
- 23:01Speaker 2: was Sonny was watching a bullpen and Miles was asking
- 23:03Speaker 2: me a question and Miles goes, what do you think, Sonny?
- 23:05Speaker 2: Sonny looked at him, goes, I think I'm watching this bullpen. Miles,
- 23:09Speaker 2: leave me alone. But like I'm I'm doing what I'm
- 23:13Speaker 2: I'm busy right now. Stop talking to me. But that's
- 23:16Speaker 2: just how washous.
- 23:18Speaker 5: Yeah, you want to talk about somebody who like I
- 23:21Speaker 5: feel like Sonny in my career was probably the one
- 23:26Speaker 5: player that took his workday extremely serious, and there were
- 23:31Speaker 5: just times where you didn't mess with what Sonny was doing.
- 23:34Speaker 5: When Sonny was playing catch, he did not want to
- 23:37Speaker 5: talk to you about anything else other than playing catch.
- 23:39Speaker 5: When he was watching a bullpen, just like that right there,
- 23:42Speaker 5: Like he was there watching a bullpen. It wasn't Miles
- 23:45Speaker 5: his bullpen. Miles was talking about something else, and I like,
- 23:49Speaker 5: I think that was just something about Sonny was he
- 23:52Speaker 5: wanted to be present and focused on his workday. I
- 23:56Speaker 5: don't think I ever talked to him when he was
- 23:58Speaker 5: working with a trainer. You could catch him, you know,
- 24:01Speaker 5: maybe in the hot top of the song and when
- 24:02Speaker 5: it wasn't a start day on the dugout bench all
- 24:05Speaker 5: the time, you could talk to him about whatever, But
- 24:08Speaker 5: when he was doing stuff that he considered work, you didn't.
- 24:11Speaker 5: You didn't want to distract him because he took that
- 24:14Speaker 5: very serious where. It's probably why it took me an
- 24:17Speaker 5: hour and fifteen minutes to get my work out in,
- 24:19Speaker 5: because I had twenty minutes of talking to the straight
- 24:21Speaker 5: coaches and doing other stuff. Sonny took forty minutes because
- 24:24Speaker 5: he was in there for forty minutes that he guys
- 24:26Speaker 5: worked on.
- 24:27Speaker 1: He was also the anti Lance Linn in terms of
- 24:30Speaker 1: dealing with media. I'll say this. You could tell he
- 24:33Speaker 1: didn't love it, but he's a good guy, so he
- 24:35Speaker 1: did it. But if you came with sort of a
- 24:38Speaker 1: i'm gonna use a lancer a half asked question with Lenns,
- 24:42Speaker 1: he would immediately shut it down or give you just
- 24:46Speaker 1: the it's one and he would shut it down and
- 24:49Speaker 1: look at someone else like you're done, You're out of
- 24:51Speaker 1: the face off circle. Sonny's gonna answer it the way
- 24:54Speaker 1: he wants it, and he'll give you a twenty minute
- 24:57Speaker 1: answer sometimes on a half of us question. He was
- 25:00Speaker 1: totally different than Lance. Didn't tolerate that stuff.
- 25:04Speaker 5: He was measured in his answers. But I feel like
- 25:07Speaker 5: Sonny was Sonny kind of knew what he was gonna
- 25:09Speaker 5: get asked, and he picked and chose what he expanded on,
- 25:12Speaker 5: and if you didn't want to expand on it, he
- 25:14Speaker 5: would give you the same answer and be like, I'm
- 25:16Speaker 5: working on something and that's what I'm doing. And then
- 25:18Speaker 5: somebody would pick and say, yeah, I'm working on something,
- 25:22Speaker 5: and I'll keep working on it, you know, like he
- 25:24Speaker 5: And then other times he would go in and he
- 25:26Speaker 5: would answer the question with a long answer, you're right.
- 25:28Speaker 1: He was in, so I didn't expect you to show up.
- 25:33Speaker 1: I'm glad you did. I didn't expect we talked this
- 25:35Speaker 1: long about Sonny Grade, but it was fascinating because he's
- 25:38Speaker 1: a fascinating guy. But the last topic I wanted to
- 25:41Speaker 1: get to is a guy who I think gave you
- 25:44Speaker 1: guys jobs in John Mozela. Right. Moe is now the
- 25:51Speaker 1: interim general manager in Anaheim. I have a good relationship
- 25:55Speaker 1: with Moe. I didn't know that this was coming. I
- 25:58Speaker 1: think that Moe gets sort of a bad rap in
- 26:01Speaker 1: Saint Louis. Let's be honest. I'm's doing a great job,
- 26:05Speaker 1: doing the job that had to be done. Stop piling
- 26:08Speaker 1: young talent. But it's not like the players were seeing
- 26:11Speaker 1: coming to their own warn of Mo guys. So I
- 26:14Speaker 1: think Mo sometimes gets a bad rack. But I'm gonna
- 26:16Speaker 1: ask you Lance, first, your your relationship with Mo. I
- 26:20Speaker 1: know he was close with a lot of the players.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Were you surprised that he's taken this job? And then also,
- 26:27Speaker 1: is that a tankless job in Anaheim because they just
- 26:31Speaker 1: spend a lot of money to be not good.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, to be honest with you, I think
- 26:36Speaker 2: it's a great fit for you because you're in a
- 26:38Speaker 2: You're going to a place where he can kind of
- 26:41Speaker 2: see he can go from top to bottom and see
- 26:44Speaker 2: what needs to change there. I think that's kind of
- 26:46Speaker 2: why he was brought in. So I think it's great.
- 26:50Speaker 2: He was the you know, he was a GM when
- 26:52Speaker 2: I have got drafted. He was he was the last
- 26:54Speaker 2: person to give me a job. So you know, I've uh,
- 26:58Speaker 2: he's you know, put a lot of money in my
- 27:00Speaker 2: pocket over my career. He also pissed me off a
- 27:03Speaker 2: little bit at times for not giving me more, but
- 27:05Speaker 2: that's part of the gig. So you know, I've always
- 27:08Speaker 2: thought most done a great job. You're looking at what
- 27:10Speaker 2: the team is now, like like you said, most of
- 27:13Speaker 2: those guys were here and part of the organization when
- 27:17Speaker 2: he when he left, and we're are the reason why
- 27:20Speaker 2: He's the reason why they're in the organization this and that.
- 27:22Speaker 2: So I think Anaheim could be a great spot for
- 27:25Speaker 2: people to see how good he can be or how
- 27:28Speaker 2: good he is by what he's able to maybe bring
- 27:31Speaker 2: to that organization that is you know, has just not
- 27:34Speaker 2: for some reason, as they've thrown money at players and
- 27:37Speaker 2: tried to do a lot of different things, but they
- 27:38Speaker 2: just haven't quite figured it out year in and year out,
- 27:41Speaker 2: especially with one of the best players of all time,
- 27:44Speaker 2: and might try it on their team. So, you know,
- 27:46Speaker 2: hopefully Moking go in there and be a freshet of
- 27:48Speaker 2: eyes and bring a different way of doing things that
- 27:52Speaker 2: might help that team.
- 27:54Speaker 1: They shall Anthony ren Goon to a two hundred and
- 27:56Speaker 1: forty five million dollar contract, which was unheard of it
- 27:59Speaker 1: the time, and they never got more than two hundred
- 28:03Speaker 1: and seventeen bats from him in a year, And he
- 28:06Speaker 1: also went on the record saying he doesn't like baseball anymore.
- 28:10Speaker 1: I mean, he's inheriting a mess, isn't he, Annheim?
- 28:15Speaker 5: I mean, I don't know. I think the one one
- 28:19Speaker 5: thing that probably gets overlooked is that the Angels have
- 28:24Speaker 5: struggled a lot at the same issues. I feel like
- 28:28Speaker 5: and I feel like bringing in a new face with
- 28:30Speaker 5: a new voice is going to be really good. And
- 28:34Speaker 5: I think all of these GMS and all of these
- 28:36Speaker 5: baseball people around the league have probably already gotten ideas
- 28:41Speaker 5: in their head from seeing the Angels on what they
- 28:43Speaker 5: would do different, because I'm guessing every GM would love
- 28:46Speaker 5: to have a Mike Trout on their team. They've got
- 28:49Speaker 5: two at least two starting pitchers that I believe are
- 28:53Speaker 5: probably going to be heavy trade candidates, Grace and Rodriguez.
- 28:56Speaker 5: One healthy is really really good, and they've got other
- 29:01Speaker 5: players around the diamond that are are pretty good players
- 29:04Speaker 5: and all star players. So I think it'll be interesting
- 29:08Speaker 5: to see if Moe's there a little bit longer and
- 29:12Speaker 5: he gets the chance to make some moves and do
- 29:14Speaker 5: some things. I understand he gets a bad rap in
- 29:16Speaker 5: Saint Louis because they didn't win seven World Series or
- 29:21Speaker 5: however many of the fans think that they should have won.
- 29:23Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 29:25Speaker 5: He built a perennial playoff organization for this fan base,
- 29:31Speaker 5: and I think that's there's something to be said about
- 29:33Speaker 5: that consistently being one of the best teams in the NL.
- 29:36Speaker 5: Maybe you didn't get to the summit very much, I
- 29:38Speaker 5: get it, but consistently one of the best organizations baseball wise,
- 29:43Speaker 5: top to bottom. So Fresh Eyes, I think will do
- 29:47Speaker 5: that organization some good out in LA, and I'm interested
- 29:50Speaker 5: to see what they do because I think the one thing,
- 29:53Speaker 5: if you know, I would think Lance would agree offense
- 29:56Speaker 5: with Shohey and Mike Trout was never the Angels issue.
- 29:59Speaker 5: They you never spent the fifteen to twenty million dollars
- 30:03Speaker 5: to build a bullpen and to add a starter or
- 30:06Speaker 5: two to help me bring consistent competitive games. They needed
- 30:11Speaker 5: to be able to pitch, and they never could do that.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Well, gentlemen, I gotta say it was a treat talking
- 30:19Speaker 1: about Sonny Gray and also seeing Kyle when we were
- 30:22Speaker 1: so sure we're gonna see Kyle. That's gonna do it
- 30:25Speaker 1: for this edition of Cardinal Territory. We'll see it for
- 30:28Speaker 1: the next episode. Hopefully that one won't suck.
