- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorites, the podcast presented by BET three
- 0:12Speaker 1: six five.
- 0:12Speaker 2: We are part of the Action Network.
- 0:14Speaker 1: I am Chad Nolman, Chief Content Officer of the Action Network.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Joining me on the show is my co host, my companion,
- 0:22Speaker 1: Michael Padre, my BFF professional Better Simon Hunter l O Soimon.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Hello, Chad, how are you doing, brother dude?
- 0:31Speaker 1: We got a great show. I'm I'm super excited about
- 0:33Speaker 1: this show because the NBA. You know, I am like
- 0:37Speaker 1: hardcore NBA hoopet and like to me, I have always
- 0:43Speaker 1: loved the drama of the NBA, the high school drama
- 0:48Speaker 1: of the NBA, as much as I love the game itself.
- 0:52Speaker 1: The Draft is this week, free agency is on the horizon.
- 0:55Speaker 1: The NBA has built a brilliant machine where we go
- 1:00Speaker 1: on finals to draft to free agency. I feel like
- 1:04Speaker 1: this guest we have today has experienced the peak of
- 1:09Speaker 1: every one of the events that is coming up, especially
- 1:13Speaker 1: free agency, in the most dramatic ways. I think it's
- 1:17Speaker 1: fair to say Simon he has had some of the
- 1:19Speaker 1: coolest free agency moments that have leaked into the public eye.
- 1:23Speaker 1: He started as a high school state champion in Florida,
- 1:26Speaker 1: became the first Florida Gator. Think about that, the first
- 1:29Speaker 1: Florida Gator to win SEC Player of the Year in
- 1:31Speaker 1: college and it wasn't a guy who was on those
- 1:35Speaker 1: back to back title teams for Billy Donovan enjoyed a
- 1:38Speaker 1: nine year NBA career for the Rockets, Maps, Grizzlies, Hawks,
- 1:41Speaker 1: currently a co host of Run It Back, the NBA
- 1:43Speaker 1: Show on FanDuel TV.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Welcome to the show, Chandler Parsons.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Appreciate you guys having me. How are we doing?
- 1:50Speaker 1: Listen, we'll record. This is a pre record, so I
- 1:54Speaker 1: want to give people heads up. Before we got on
- 1:56Speaker 1: the show, we talked about the fact that Jerry West
- 1:59Speaker 1: had and you're I think at the FanDuel studios and
- 2:03Speaker 1: Shams was there, and you had mentioned how he had
- 2:04Speaker 1: just tweeted this and then you're talking to him. So
- 2:08Speaker 1: of course I asked you, like, you have run in
- 2:10Speaker 1: NBA circles for going on fifteen years. Now, give me
- 2:15Speaker 1: the Jerry West story that you just shared with Simon
- 2:19Speaker 1: and I before we came on the air.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Yeah. So it it's crazy. He's such a legend, he's
- 2:24Speaker 3: such an icon in our game, in our industry, and
- 2:26Speaker 3: so it just doesn't feel right. I literally saw, you know,
- 2:30Speaker 3: Jerry and his family. They were in Palm Springs like
- 2:33Speaker 3: a month ago, two months ago, and I'm playing in
- 2:35Speaker 3: this golf tournament and we're all sitting there shooting the
- 2:38Speaker 3: ship in the Mitton's lounge, and you know, he walks in.
- 2:41Speaker 3: He's got this G four hat on it just says logo,
- 2:44Speaker 3: and I'm like, wow, that's awesome. I'm like, that's fucking
- 2:47Speaker 3: sick hat. And I kind of make a comment I'm
- 2:49Speaker 3: and say hi to him. He's always been great. Jerry's
- 2:51Speaker 3: one of those guys that you know, whether you play
- 2:53Speaker 3: on one of his teams or you don't, he's always
- 2:55Speaker 3: kind of talking to you in the hallways and the
- 2:57Speaker 3: locker rooms and he's hilarious. Man. He would curse and
- 3:01Speaker 3: swear as like no, he mastered it. And so I've
- 3:04Speaker 3: always had a great relationship with him. And I see
- 3:07Speaker 3: him the next day walking, you know, through the clubhouse
- 3:10Speaker 3: and just kind of looks at me and he takes
- 3:11Speaker 3: the hat off and he throws me the hat. So literally,
- 3:14Speaker 3: like my last memory of the the West Legend is,
- 3:17Speaker 3: you know, I still I'm gonna wear it tomorrow on
- 3:19Speaker 3: the show. I have this G four just sick white
- 3:22Speaker 3: hat that says logo on it.
- 3:24Speaker 1: What I've always loved about NBA players as much as
- 3:29Speaker 1: I think more than actually NFL players, Major League Baseball players.
- 3:34Speaker 1: NBA players are massive, massive basketball NBA fans. There is
- 3:42Speaker 1: a sort of an honor for the history and the players.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I feel like I see that.
- 3:48Speaker 1: I think it's also because NBA players are just much
- 3:50Speaker 1: more engaged in social media at the highest level. So
- 3:53Speaker 1: you see how they're reacting to excellent play throughout the playoffs,
- 3:58Speaker 1: throughout the NBA Finals.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Did you feel bad?
- 4:01Speaker 1: Did you get that sense when you were playing and
- 4:03Speaker 1: now that you're sort of an alumni.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Uh, yeah, one hundred percent. And now it's crazy because
- 4:10Speaker 3: you see all the comparisons. I think I think now
- 4:12Speaker 3: with analysts and media, we get a little ahead of
- 4:14Speaker 3: ourselves with the you know, the Anthony Edwards Michael Jordan
- 4:18Speaker 3: comparisons and Wimby being the best of all times, because
- 4:21Speaker 3: it's these kids are so talented that they do have
- 4:24Speaker 3: a chance to do that. But it's it's it's a
- 4:26Speaker 3: silly argument. It's silly. You could go back and forth
- 4:28Speaker 3: on you know, the greatest of all time argument or
- 4:31Speaker 3: you know, the best defensive player. There's so many arguments
- 4:33Speaker 3: that are just so hypothetical that would never know they're
- 4:35Speaker 3: all opinionated. But yeah, me as a guy, a normal kid,
- 4:38Speaker 3: I grew up in Ortlanta, Florida. Dude, I was obsessed.
- 4:40Speaker 3: My grandpa had season tickets to the Magic, so I'd
- 4:42Speaker 3: go to you know, four or five games a year
- 4:45Speaker 3: with him, and I just love Shack and Penny, and
- 4:47Speaker 3: then I love those Celtics teams kind of you know,
- 4:50Speaker 3: when I was really young with you know, Bird and McHale.
- 4:52Speaker 3: And fast forward twenty eleven, I get drafted and the
- 4:56Speaker 3: guy who's calling me from the Houston Rockets to draft
- 4:58Speaker 3: me is Kevin McHale So like shit like that where
- 5:01Speaker 3: it's just kind of full circle, you know, had to
- 5:04Speaker 3: pinch myself, like, man, this said dude that I just
- 5:06Speaker 3: idolized growing up, and now he's calling me like welcoming
- 5:10Speaker 3: me to the NBA, which I dreamed of since I
- 5:13Speaker 3: was a kid watching this dude. So things like that.
- 5:16Speaker 3: I've always been such a huge NBA buff. I know,
- 5:20Speaker 3: I still obviously I work now in the industry, but
- 5:23Speaker 3: I watch every single game. It could be the Pistons, Hornets,
- 5:26Speaker 3: on a Tuesday, like I'm tuning in and I'm still
- 5:28Speaker 3: I watch old games too from back in the day.
- 5:31Speaker 3: So I've always just been such a basketball junkie, and
- 5:33Speaker 3: so I have a lot of respect for the players
- 5:35Speaker 3: that came before me, and I have a tremendous respect
- 5:39Speaker 3: for these next up and coming wave of superstars that
- 5:42Speaker 3: are changing the game before our eyes.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Well, let's get into it. As a reminder of the Favorites.

- 6:30Speaker 2: For those enjoying on YouTube, don't.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Forget to give us a like and subscribe to the
- 6:34Speaker 1: Action Network YouTube page. All right, we're weeks away from
- 6:39Speaker 1: NBA free agency. It has become a massive moment for
- 6:45Speaker 1: the NBA as if you are an NBA fan, it's
- 6:48Speaker 1: as big a moment for NBA covered as any part
- 6:50Speaker 1: of the year.
- 6:51Speaker 2: The drama, the.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Gossip, the speculation, top free agents. Right now, I'm going
- 6:55Speaker 1: to give you a list you can add Tyrese, Maxi,
- 6:59Speaker 1: Paul J George, Lebron conversations, Pascal siakam og An Andobi.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Handicap.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Where you think these players land and tell me are
- 7:11Speaker 1: we missing a key player who can make a big difference.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Similar Well, it's interesting everyone wants to talk about the
- 7:16Speaker 3: Lebron thinks because of what's at stake, and the Lakers
- 7:19Speaker 3: are basically two weeks away and don't have a head coach,
- 7:22Speaker 3: so that whole aspect of it and all the Hurley
- 7:24Speaker 3: drama and that kind of makes that one a little
- 7:27Speaker 3: Spice here and with Bronny coming is what's going on there?
- 7:30Speaker 3: Is there a deal in place everyone likes to have,
- 7:33Speaker 3: you know, their opinion on that. But the names you
- 7:36Speaker 3: just named, I imagine they all pretty much go back.
- 7:39Speaker 3: I think Indiana's going to resign Siakam. I think Philly
- 7:42Speaker 3: is going to lock in Maxie. The one that's interesting
- 7:45Speaker 3: is Paul George. I still think he goes back to
- 7:47Speaker 3: the Clippers. Everything they got going on there at that core,
- 7:50Speaker 3: those guys they're built to win now and Paul George
- 7:52Speaker 3: is a huge piece of that. Going into the new arena,
- 7:56Speaker 3: I think he might be the one that would stay
- 7:59Speaker 3: or to Lee. You see, maybe Philly would be in
- 8:01Speaker 3: play there. That could be interesting. Jimmy Butler, you hear
- 8:06Speaker 3: the rumors and maybe where he's gonna go. Is he
- 8:08Speaker 3: gonna go back to Philly? Is he gonna kind of
- 8:10Speaker 3: re sign in Miami? So it's crazy because there's not
- 8:13Speaker 3: one like Tamar DeRozan. What what's he gonna do? So
- 8:18Speaker 3: there's there's all these names where like you just don't
- 8:20Speaker 3: know and just feels like their current teams are going
- 8:23Speaker 3: to kind of hold them and re sign them to
- 8:25Speaker 3: longer deals. Which they all deserve. They're all great players
- 8:27Speaker 3: that are all kind of going into their prime where
- 8:30Speaker 3: you know, still have a lot of good basketball left.
- 8:32Speaker 3: So it's always interesting. There's always going to be some surprises,
- 8:36Speaker 3: there's always gonna be some deals. You see, Hartenstein is
- 8:38Speaker 3: gonna get eighty plus million, So someone like that just
- 8:41Speaker 3: had a you know, a hell of a year, and
- 8:44Speaker 3: the come up in the rise he had just shows
- 8:46Speaker 3: how valuable his versatility is. Rebounding is all everything he
- 8:49Speaker 3: brings to the table, it's gonna get you eighty to
- 8:51Speaker 3: one hundred million dollars these days. So it's it's crazy.
- 8:54Speaker 3: So it's it's always fun, it's always exciting. But I
- 8:57Speaker 3: think those names, for the most part, I think I
- 8:59Speaker 3: think we'll see them back on their current teams.
- 9:02Speaker 4: So I'm a I'll be up top. I'm a Philly fan.
- 9:04Speaker 4: You think there's no outside shot they can do the
- 9:06Speaker 4: Maxi and Paul George for him, like he gets just
- 9:09Speaker 4: trying to get three guys like two other guys with
- 9:11Speaker 4: embiid and because it just you know, I love Tobias
- 9:14Speaker 4: as a person. It just never worked right, whatever that was,
- 9:17Speaker 4: he just did not mesh with Embiid's playing style in
- 9:19Speaker 4: the system. They said, not that they set up to fail,
- 9:21Speaker 4: but he should have kind of been with MAXI turning
- 9:24Speaker 4: to right, a guy that had the ball in his
- 9:25Speaker 4: hand was pushing the basket point. So I'd love to
- 9:28Speaker 4: get you review. Do the Sixers even have a chance
- 9:29Speaker 4: of Paul George is just another team, another year of
- 9:32Speaker 4: them having a ton of money left over and they're
- 9:34Speaker 4: just gonna spend it all. Kind of fillers.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I do think they did that third. Still, I think,
- 9:38Speaker 3: like you said, Tobias has run its course. I think
- 9:40Speaker 3: it just didn't pan out how it kind of ended
- 9:42Speaker 3: with the crowd booing him and him just doesn't. It
- 9:44Speaker 3: doesn't feel like there's any way in hell he's going
- 9:46Speaker 3: back there. And I'm with you. I love Tobias as
- 9:49Speaker 3: a person. I love him as a player. He's versuti,
- 9:51Speaker 3: he can post up off the block, he can take
- 9:53Speaker 3: a big off the dribble, he does kind of, he
- 9:55Speaker 3: can play multiple positions. I just think for what they need,
- 9:58Speaker 3: I think Paul George, yeah, I think there's a shot.
- 10:00Speaker 3: I think they could offer him a lot of money.
- 10:02Speaker 3: I think you're seeing the success with the Nuggets and
- 10:05Speaker 3: the Celtics, how they have the dynamic duos Murray and
- 10:07Speaker 3: Jokic and Brown and Tatum, and then they fill the
- 10:10Speaker 3: rest of that roster out with unbelievable role players. I
- 10:13Speaker 3: think that's gonna start being the format for success in
- 10:17Speaker 3: the NBA. You got to find the Michael Porters, you
- 10:19Speaker 3: got to find the Derek Whites that are just so
- 10:21Speaker 3: valuable to your team. And now even those guys when
- 10:24Speaker 3: they're contract cup, they're going to get paid twenty plus
- 10:27Speaker 3: million dollars a year. So I think with everything going up,
- 10:29Speaker 3: the money going up, the days of the Big Three
- 10:32Speaker 3: is tough because then you have to find guys that
- 10:34Speaker 3: are going to be productive and take less money. So
- 10:37Speaker 3: I would love Paul George to Philly. I think he
- 10:39Speaker 3: immediately makes them a contender. I think he really is
- 10:42Speaker 3: exactly what they need. He's that wing that can go score,
- 10:45Speaker 3: he could defend, He's a two way player. So I
- 10:49Speaker 3: would love that in Philly. And I just I just
- 10:52Speaker 3: don't I can't see him leaving for whatever reason with
- 10:55Speaker 3: everything going the new arena. Like I said, that Team Kawhi,
- 10:58Speaker 3: all them being kind of la local dudes. I just
- 11:00Speaker 3: can't picture him leaving yet.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Is there a game changing player in the market coming
- 11:09Speaker 1: up that you think will switch teams and could be
- 11:13Speaker 1: that impact player to elevate someone.
- 11:18Speaker 3: You're talking about in regards of Philly or just any.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Team free agency generally.
- 11:22Speaker 3: Yeah, you know what, the rumors of Donovan Mitchell, I
- 11:25Speaker 3: think that those were those were kind of hot there
- 11:27Speaker 3: for a while, and then you heard the disconnect with
- 11:29Speaker 3: him and JB bickerstuff. So now that they moved on
- 11:32Speaker 3: from JB, I look for Donovan to kind of re
- 11:35Speaker 3: sign and be that foundation piece in Cleveland. But he
- 11:37Speaker 3: was interesting. You could see him maybe going to like
- 11:39Speaker 3: a Lakers. You hear the Dejante Murray Trey Young. Both
- 11:43Speaker 3: those guys are extremely talented. They haven't really panned out
- 11:45Speaker 3: together either, but they're both such elite scorers or both hoopers.
- 11:49Speaker 3: You can plug those two guys on a lot of
- 11:51Speaker 3: different teams and have success there as well. So, uh,
- 11:55Speaker 3: there are a lot of players out there. There's always
- 11:56Speaker 3: going to be players on the move, There's always gonna
- 11:58Speaker 3: be players that are underpaid, There's always players that are overpaid.
- 12:01Speaker 3: So it's it's always such a fun time. But Tray
- 12:05Speaker 3: Young to me, I think Tray Young for whatever reason,
- 12:07Speaker 3: whether it's personality wise, whether it's you know, the coaches
- 12:11Speaker 3: that have been fired under you know while coaching him.
- 12:14Speaker 3: He's he's gotten this bad rep And I played with Trey.
- 12:16Speaker 3: He's not a bad dude. He might have been a
- 12:18Speaker 3: little immature coming into the league, but he's so talented. Dude.
- 12:21Speaker 3: He can shoot the ball from so deep, he creates
- 12:24Speaker 3: so much attention. He can pass, he can he's for
- 12:27Speaker 3: a small guy, he defends. Uh So, I think he's
- 12:30Speaker 3: a guy that once he goes to a team where
- 12:32Speaker 3: he's not the best player and he's not the go
- 12:35Speaker 3: to guy, I think his maturity and now he's gotten older,
- 12:38Speaker 3: I think he's really gonna thrive if he does go
- 12:41Speaker 3: to a different system, a different style of play where
- 12:43Speaker 3: he's not the go to guy, but he can still
- 12:45Speaker 3: have the capability of erupting for those thirty forty point games.
- 12:49Speaker 1: What does that look like when you're when you're Trey Young,
- 12:53Speaker 1: you're a top five pick, massive expectations, the trade between
- 12:58Speaker 1: the MAVs and the Hawks with him and Luca. How
- 13:02Speaker 1: does that immaturity manifest itself when you're just joining the team.
- 13:07Speaker 3: It's tough because when you have such high expectations and
- 13:10Speaker 3: you are young. And he's a scoring guard coming out
- 13:12Speaker 3: of OU, right, so that's that's all he knows. And
- 13:15Speaker 3: he's always been capable of, you know, being that pass
- 13:18Speaker 3: first guard. But since he's been in Atlanta, it's been
- 13:21Speaker 3: his team. They've given him the keys. He's the head
- 13:23Speaker 3: of that snake. So he's been relied on and counted
- 13:26Speaker 3: on to score a lot of buckets and he has
- 13:29Speaker 3: a lot of success. Listen, the dude's been an All Star.
- 13:31Speaker 3: The dude has had a hell of a career. They
- 13:33Speaker 3: just haven't won at the level I think they're going
- 13:35Speaker 3: to win. Atlanta has so much talent. I thought they
- 13:37Speaker 3: were going to be one of those teams. I was
- 13:38Speaker 3: going to be a home court advantage team this year.
- 13:40Speaker 3: I thought they were going to be a top four
- 13:41Speaker 3: team in the Eastern Conference. And they just didn't cut it.
- 13:44Speaker 3: And I think the trade with Deonte Murray sounded good
- 13:47Speaker 3: on paper, like a lot of these do, and then
- 13:48Speaker 3: it just didn't gel together. But Trey Murray or Tray
- 13:51Speaker 3: Tray young. When you're when you're that young and you
- 13:54Speaker 3: have that much on your plate, it's hard man. The
- 13:56Speaker 3: expectations to carry a team to gain the respect and
- 13:59Speaker 3: the truck of older guys in the locker room. And
- 14:03Speaker 3: like I said, I think the older he gets, the
- 14:04Speaker 3: more mature he gets. He's always been the best player
- 14:08Speaker 3: on his team. So the minute he does go to
- 14:10Speaker 3: a San Antonio or a different look like that where
- 14:13Speaker 3: he can kind of be relied on as a leader
- 14:16Speaker 3: and not a score I think we'll see Trey Young
- 14:18Speaker 3: kind of take back off again.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Yeah, that's interesting, right. You know, there might just be
- 14:22Speaker 1: guys who are not built for being the leading scorer
- 14:29Speaker 1: and the leader of the team. There's guys like Luca
- 14:32Speaker 1: who are stone called killers. And I think we've seen
- 14:37Speaker 1: this with Kyrie right Where Kyrie is a brilliant talent.
- 14:41Speaker 1: NBA players adore him and look at his skill set
- 14:46Speaker 1: and think his shot making, his ball handling. They don't
- 14:49Speaker 1: care about anything else other than his skill set, right,
- 14:51Speaker 1: And we've seen in Dallas, not so much in the
- 14:53Speaker 1: finals as we're recording this so far, but his ability
- 14:57Speaker 1: to take a back seat as the guy who has
- 14:59Speaker 1: to be the face of the franchise, as he was
- 15:01Speaker 1: able to do with Lebron and Cleveland. There's just a
- 15:04Speaker 1: massive difference in how he plays day to day without
- 15:08Speaker 1: that level of pressure.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's exactly my point with Trey. Once he
- 15:11Speaker 3: has a teammate like a Luca and he understands and
- 15:14Speaker 3: it's okay to be one B And you sell this
- 15:16Speaker 3: stuff with Tatum and Brown where Jay kids saying, you know,
- 15:19Speaker 3: he's the best Brown's the best player. It's almost like
- 15:21Speaker 3: when you have success like that, winning cures everything. And
- 15:25Speaker 3: even on our show and running Back, we try and
- 15:27Speaker 3: nitpick the Boston Celtics and they're fourteen and two in
- 15:30Speaker 3: the postseason. They've been absolutely dominant. They have literally cake
- 15:34Speaker 3: walked to the finals, and they've been dominating the Mavericks
- 15:37Speaker 3: in the finals, and we still try and say, oh, well,
- 15:39Speaker 3: Tatum's an inefficient scorer. I'm like, he's doing enough for
- 15:43Speaker 3: his team to put be up two to zero and
- 15:45Speaker 3: the NBA Finals on the way. So when you look
- 15:48Speaker 3: at Kyrie Irving this year, no one's talking about the negativity,
- 15:51Speaker 3: the headlines that the negative shit about Kyrie Irving because
- 15:54Speaker 3: he's been hooping and he's taken that maturity to a
- 15:56Speaker 3: next level where he doesn't care if he's the best
- 15:58Speaker 3: player of the team. He knows it's Luca's team. Some
- 16:01Speaker 3: nights he is going to be the best player on
- 16:02Speaker 3: the team. Some nights he is going to carry the
- 16:04Speaker 3: offensive load. And he's struggled a little bit two of
- 16:06Speaker 3: these first two games. With everything the storyline is going
- 16:09Speaker 3: back to Boston. I really look for him to have
- 16:11Speaker 3: a huge Game three here tonight. But it's just to
- 16:16Speaker 3: see Kyrie Irving kind of take on that ownership and
- 16:19Speaker 3: just be happy and back to playing basketball is unbelievable
- 16:22Speaker 3: because it's never been about the talent with Kyrie Irving.
- 16:24Speaker 3: He's always had that, He's always been productive on the court.
- 16:26Speaker 3: He's always been so fun to watch. Watching this dude
- 16:29Speaker 3: dribble and finished, it's beautiful. And so to see him
- 16:33Speaker 3: do this now and correlating to wins, that's when your
- 16:36Speaker 3: career kind of takes over. That's when you get respect.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Jayalen Brown wants all NBA, he wants all this you get.
- 16:41Speaker 3: Once he wins the championships, he'll get all that, I
- 16:44Speaker 3: guarantee it.
- 16:45Speaker 1: So you mentioned Isaiah Hartenstein before, and he is on
- 16:49Speaker 1: the verge of getting a massive deal. You've been in
- 16:53Speaker 1: that spot. You've been in that spot a couple times.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Describe the process of going through NBA free agency. You
- 17:05Speaker 1: famously signed one of your deals in a club with
- 17:08Speaker 1: Mark Cuban and the Mavericks, which is great, But what
- 17:12Speaker 1: it's like to go through that process and when you
- 17:14Speaker 1: realize you're about to sign a deal for fifteen twenty
- 17:17Speaker 1: million dollars a year.
- 17:19Speaker 3: Yeah, well, it's awesome and you try not to worry
- 17:21Speaker 3: about it while you're playing. But like for Hartenstein's situation,
- 17:26Speaker 3: like now that he's done, he obviously has an agent
- 17:29Speaker 3: that's in constant communication. It's funny because the NBA thinks
- 17:32Speaker 3: these deals are at midnight at July whatever. July first
- 17:35Speaker 3: you go, there's talks before that, and there's deals in
- 17:37Speaker 3: plays where else you wouldn't see the shams and the
- 17:39Speaker 3: WOJE bombs at twelve oh one of guys signing deals
- 17:42Speaker 3: like it's it's ignorant to think that that's not happening,
- 17:46Speaker 3: but it's it's crazy and to a normal fan, fans
- 17:50Speaker 3: get so mad and so shocked when they see a
- 17:52Speaker 3: guy get paid, and it's you pay a player for
- 17:55Speaker 3: what they've done and what you hope they do. So
- 17:58Speaker 3: Isaiah Hartenstein, he's had a hell of a season. He
- 18:01Speaker 3: was so good and so valuable for the Knicks. He's
- 18:03Speaker 3: going to get eighty million dollars because of that, and
- 18:06Speaker 3: they hope that he does that continue to do that,
- 18:08Speaker 3: but barring an injury or you know, whatever happens, he
- 18:12Speaker 3: might not. So that's the risk of team takes. So
- 18:14Speaker 3: when I went to free agency, I had a knee
- 18:17Speaker 3: surgery and I was kind of going through a rehab
- 18:20Speaker 3: when I first signed my big deal, well that was
- 18:23Speaker 3: my second deal, but my deal in Dallas. It was
- 18:25Speaker 3: interesting because I was a second round pick and I
- 18:29Speaker 3: had a team option in my third and fourth year,
- 18:32Speaker 3: and I was lucky enough to play right away in
- 18:34Speaker 3: my career and I became a starter like my six
- 18:36Speaker 3: game of my career. And Dan Fagan rest his soul.
- 18:40Speaker 3: He was my agent, and he basically he had Dwight Howard,
- 18:44Speaker 3: who was a huge free agent up and coming that summer,
- 18:47Speaker 3: and so he also he repped a lot of guys
- 18:49Speaker 3: during that time that were studs, DeMarcus Cousins, John Wall,
- 18:53Speaker 3: DeAndre Jordan. He had like eight to twelve Max players,
- 18:57Speaker 3: And I'll never forget, you know, he has a meet
- 19:00Speaker 3: in Houston where it's me, him, Darryl Morey, and I
- 19:04Speaker 3: think Tad Brown, who is the CEO of the Rockets,
- 19:07Speaker 3: and he's basically we're talking about my upcoming free agency
- 19:11Speaker 3: and because they could have easily just picked up my
- 19:13Speaker 3: team option my fourth year or I think I was
- 19:15Speaker 3: slotted to make like nine hundred and forty grand or something,
- 19:18Speaker 3: and at that point, I'm averaging like seventeen six and five,
- 19:21Speaker 3: Like I'm you know, the trajectory is going up. And
- 19:25Speaker 3: he says, if we have any if you have any
- 19:27Speaker 3: chance of Dwight Howard the following summer, you're not picking
- 19:31Speaker 3: up Chandler's fourth year. And I just remember Daryl was
- 19:34Speaker 3: looking at like, what the Like, what the fuck is that?
- 19:36Speaker 3: What do you mean? He's like, if you want to
- 19:37Speaker 3: pair these two together with James Harden and you want
- 19:39Speaker 3: to get Dwight Howard, I'm his agent, you're not picking
- 19:42Speaker 3: up Chandler's Chandler's four fourth year and kind of like
- 19:46Speaker 3: used that leverage to strong arm an actual free agency.
- 19:49Speaker 3: So I was lucky enough to have him do my
- 19:52Speaker 3: first deal where I got out of my rookie contract
- 19:55Speaker 3: a year early. And I had developed a relationship with
- 19:58Speaker 3: Mark Cuban through Ulster week in and through mutual friends
- 20:01Speaker 3: to where when that free agency come market put together
- 20:04Speaker 3: this offer with like a trade kicker and a player
- 20:08Speaker 3: option and a max deal basically put a gun to
- 20:11Speaker 3: Houston's head to where they eventually didn't didn't match the contract.
- 20:14Speaker 3: But yeah, he came. He flew to Orlando. I had
- 20:17Speaker 3: a party at my house and I went to this nightclub.
- 20:21Speaker 3: I forgot the name of the nightclub, but we're all
- 20:23Speaker 3: there and we're in the club and Cuban comes walking
- 20:26Speaker 3: in with like a like literally like a fucking Manila folder.
- 20:31Speaker 3: And I remember I was making my hometown in Orlando,
- 20:33Speaker 3: and they stopped the music, they turn on the lights,
- 20:36Speaker 3: and literally, like I he opens it and I signed
- 20:39Speaker 3: my actual, my actual deal, my max deal in a
- 20:42Speaker 3: nightclub in downtown Orlando. It was It was epic.
- 20:46Speaker 1: That kind of sets up a celebration perfectly. So what
- 20:52Speaker 1: happens next, Well.
- 20:55Speaker 3: I mean I obviously knew that we had agreed to
- 20:58Speaker 3: terms and stuff, so he literally I remember we had
- 21:00Speaker 3: a night and I think he either flew the next
- 21:02Speaker 3: morning or flew right out of there. And that's kind
- 21:05Speaker 3: of when free agency starts. Then. I hadn't even been
- 21:07Speaker 3: to Dallas yet, I haven't done any of that stuff
- 21:09Speaker 3: yet so I mean, the next day, I want to
- 21:10Speaker 3: play into Dallas and I'm meeting everybody, and I'm you know,
- 21:15Speaker 3: there was a period there where I had to wait
- 21:17Speaker 3: to see if Houston was going to match, which was
- 21:20Speaker 3: nuts too because this all could have been for nothing.
- 21:22Speaker 3: And imagine me going back to Houston after sign a
- 21:25Speaker 3: contract with the rival owner in a nightclub. But it
- 21:29Speaker 3: was just a crazy time. And that's just the kind
- 21:30Speaker 3: of owner Mark Cuban is. He's so cool. He's such
- 21:32Speaker 3: a player's owner, and he's so involved and he gets
- 21:36Speaker 3: to know you and your family and outside of all
- 21:39Speaker 3: the business stuff and the investing stuff, he really is
- 21:42Speaker 3: just a cool dope dude that you just want to
- 21:44Speaker 3: play for something like that.
- 21:46Speaker 1: With Father's Day right around the corner, what do you
- 21:48Speaker 1: give to the man who has everything? You give him
- 21:52Speaker 1: a winning bet, but since those can't be guaranteed, give
- 21:55Speaker 1: him an experience.
- 21:56Speaker 2: I'll never forget.

- 23:16Speaker 1: I had to start giving other food away and I've
- 23:19Speaker 1: enjoyed all of it so famously. You're involved in that
- 23:25Speaker 1: Cuban signing at the club, and it's like, I think
- 23:29Speaker 1: a year or two later, you and Cuban are recruiting
- 23:34Speaker 1: DeAndre Jordan to come to the MAVs and join your team.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Explain that process because it has become one of the
- 23:46Speaker 1: most famous free agency recruitment stories that has happened in
- 23:54Speaker 1: sort of the times of free agents frenzies.
- 23:57Speaker 3: Yeah, that was that was a nuts time. And I
- 24:00Speaker 3: mentioned earlier Dan Fagan was my agent. He had also
- 24:02Speaker 3: wrapped DeAndre Jordan. So I lived in LA in the summer,
- 24:06Speaker 3: so we'd kind of work out together. We'd spend quite
- 24:08Speaker 3: a you know, quite some time together just getting to
- 24:11Speaker 3: know one another. I had known him before again through
- 24:14Speaker 3: like mutual people. But uh, I'm in Dallas and and
- 24:18Speaker 3: and we're pretty good. And we got me, and we
- 24:19Speaker 3: got Dirk, we got Monte Ellis. There's time there. We
- 24:22Speaker 3: had to kind of shuffle point guards with Jamiir Nelson
- 24:24Speaker 3: and d Will and Rondo for so we had the
- 24:28Speaker 3: pieces in the corps going forward. And Tyson Chandler was
- 24:30Speaker 3: great for us, and uh, we wanted DeAndre Jordan. He
- 24:34Speaker 3: was he was a big time target for us. We
- 24:36Speaker 3: thought his time had ran out and in LA and
- 24:40Speaker 3: he wanted a bigger role and he fit perfect what
- 24:43Speaker 3: we were doing. Running gun. Rick Carlos offense, a lot
- 24:45Speaker 3: of pick and rolls, a lot of lobbs, and he
- 24:47Speaker 3: was the king of you know, lobb City. So I
- 24:49Speaker 3: just to start recruiting him, normal relationship, nothing extra, just
- 24:53Speaker 3: this is basically like he's my boyd I mean, I want,
- 24:55Speaker 3: I really want to play with him. I know it's
- 24:57Speaker 3: going to be great for his career. I know it's
- 24:58Speaker 3: gonna be great for my career. So I start doing that,
- 25:02Speaker 3: and I man, we spent every day together that summer
- 25:04Speaker 3: leading up to it. We started hanging out and like
- 25:06Speaker 3: I said, Cuban's very involved as well, so he's kind
- 25:09Speaker 3: of hanging out with us. We're going out where and
- 25:12Speaker 3: I just remember we get the commitment from him and
- 25:15Speaker 3: we're stoked, and we went to Shellbacks in Manhattan Beach.
- 25:18Speaker 3: We're just we're getting hammered. Like it's such a good
- 25:21Speaker 3: I remember Blake Griffin, who was on the Clippers with
- 25:23Speaker 3: DeAndre Jordan, came with us to like the celebration of
- 25:28Speaker 3: like just like DJ leave it, like you know what
- 25:29Speaker 3: I mean, Like we're all friends. So it was done deal.
- 25:33Speaker 3: And I remember I get on a plane, I go
- 25:35Speaker 3: to Vegas and this is where, uh, you know, I
- 25:37Speaker 3: tweet an airplane emoji. And this is when the viral
- 25:42Speaker 3: whole emoji wore because at that time you start seeing
- 25:45Speaker 3: these reports DeAndre Jordan's having cold feet, and I'm like,
- 25:49Speaker 3: I remember my boys are sending it to me, and
- 25:51Speaker 3: I'm like, nah, dude, like I was was just with them,
- 25:54Speaker 3: like I just left, like no shot. We're looking at
- 25:56Speaker 3: houses together in Dallas, like I'm putting them with it,
- 25:59Speaker 3: you know, the realtors, and it's a done deal. He
- 26:03Speaker 3: looked in Cuban like you're not gonna slide to an
- 26:05Speaker 3: owner of a team, especially Mark Cuban. And then so
- 26:09Speaker 3: I'm talking to Dan Fagan and Dan Fagan's not hearing
- 26:11Speaker 3: from DeAndre and so now I'm like, oh, this is weird.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Like that's when I first kind of my stomach drop
- 26:16Speaker 3: because I'm like, okay, now he's not talking to me,
- 26:17Speaker 3: He's not talking to his agent. And that's kind of
- 26:20Speaker 3: when the whole social media thing just blew up. Where
- 26:23Speaker 3: you know, Blake is locking him in the in the
- 26:27Speaker 3: in the house with the chair, and Mark was in Houston.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Mark and flew or it was Houston or La I
- 26:33Speaker 3: forget exactly where it was. But Mark was like at
- 26:36Speaker 3: his house, but DeAndre wouldn't answer his phone, and no
- 26:40Speaker 3: one around answer his phone, so literally, and I was
- 26:44Speaker 3: I think I was in Vegas at the time, so
- 26:46Speaker 3: it was all just chaos and I just can't believe
- 26:49Speaker 3: it's gonna happen. It was, this was a slam dunk.
- 26:51Speaker 3: This is no way it's not gonna happen. And sure enough,
- 26:53Speaker 3: I mean I think he got cold feed and I
- 26:55Speaker 3: think the Clippers, which again, at the time, I was
- 26:57Speaker 3: so shitty, I was so salty. I was mad as
- 27:00Speaker 3: fuck at like I was like, come on, are you
- 27:02Speaker 3: kidding me? This was going to put us over the edge.
- 27:04Speaker 3: We were going to be the best team in the
- 27:06Speaker 3: NBA and the next year. And it worked out. It
- 27:08Speaker 3: worked out for him. He was he had a great career.
- 27:11Speaker 3: I think he was, you know, defensive Player of the
- 27:12Speaker 3: Year all NBA that that year, and he worked out.
- 27:16Speaker 3: But it was just such a crazy time, man, because
- 27:18Speaker 3: it was it was such a done deal and then
- 27:20Speaker 3: it just wasn't out of nowhere, and it wasn't just
- 27:23Speaker 3: like recruiting a normal free agent. This is my boy,
- 27:25Speaker 3: Like I had a previous relationship with him.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Well yeah, I mean the you mentioned this social media
- 27:31Speaker 1: Wars and like, look, this is there is nothing better
- 27:34Speaker 1: than NBAH Twitter, and especially like I said, because the
- 27:39Speaker 1: players are so much more active. The players are such
- 27:41Speaker 1: big fans of what's happening in the league that they
- 27:44Speaker 1: get so involved.
- 27:45Speaker 2: You tweeted the plane.
- 27:47Speaker 1: I think Blake Griffin might have tweeted a car Chris
- 27:51Speaker 1: Paul that was the Banana boat vacation where the picture
- 27:56Speaker 1: of him mellow d Wade and Lebron he le' that vacation.
- 28:01Speaker 1: And then that's where Blake Griffin tweeted the picture of
- 28:05Speaker 1: him of a door, of a chair barricading the door. Listen,
- 28:11Speaker 1: I've tried to recruit talent for years in all various jobs.
- 28:16Speaker 1: I know that feeling in the pit of your stomach
- 28:18Speaker 1: when like when things have gone sideways.
- 28:23Speaker 2: It's excruciating.
- 28:24Speaker 3: Oh dude, this was, this is this is a bad beat.
- 28:27Speaker 3: This was and you know, the top it off, this
- 28:30Speaker 3: asshole goes to the MAVs two years later when I
- 28:32Speaker 3: leave the MAVs, so we never even got to cross
- 28:34Speaker 3: paths and play with each other. So it was a
- 28:37Speaker 3: crazy time. And again I think I think Michael Jordan
- 28:40Speaker 3: tweeting emoji. I think Kobe or the Lakers tweeted like
- 28:42Speaker 3: the championship trophy, so like that whole thing really just
- 28:46Speaker 3: took off, and that was just like the new age
- 28:50Speaker 3: of social media and what can happen and stuff. This
- 28:52Speaker 3: would never happen back in the day, but that was
- 28:54Speaker 3: such a crazy time. And I'm still to this day
- 28:56Speaker 3: on front with DJ and we definitely had a little
- 28:59Speaker 3: fallen out there for a while after that because I
- 29:01Speaker 3: feel like, how could you not? But that was definitely
- 29:04Speaker 3: one of the craziest stories. And that's just kind of
- 29:07Speaker 3: my personality. I've always been very personable. I have great
- 29:11Speaker 3: relationships with a lot of cool people, and so when
- 29:13Speaker 3: it comes to free agency or something like that, if
- 29:15Speaker 3: it's recruiting from my agent, if it's recruiting for my team,
- 29:18Speaker 3: I always wanted to have the best and to be
- 29:20Speaker 3: the best. So I would always kind of put myself
- 29:22Speaker 3: out there and do things like that. But yeah, this
- 29:25Speaker 3: one backfired.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Well, I know Simon wants to has a question when
- 29:29Speaker 1: was to ask you, but I do want to follow
- 29:32Speaker 1: up with that. There is a very sort of congenial
- 29:38Speaker 1: appeal I think you've carried yourself with through your career
- 29:41Speaker 1: where that puts you in the position, to be in
- 29:44Speaker 1: the club with Mark Cuban, to sign the contract, to
- 29:47Speaker 1: be in the room with Jerry West where he's tossing
- 29:49Speaker 1: you a hat, to be the key point of contact
- 29:53Speaker 1: with DeAndre Jordan when you're trying to recruit him. That
- 29:57Speaker 1: doesn't happen everybody in the NBA. Does it keep happening?
- 30:01Speaker 1: Why does it keep happen to you?
- 30:04Speaker 3: I don't know, man, I I just always been that type,
- 30:07Speaker 3: that type of dude. I've always been personal. I've always
- 30:09Speaker 3: been pretty easy going. I could relate to, you know,
- 30:13Speaker 3: all different walks of life. And so I don't know.
- 30:17Speaker 3: This is how I was raised the youngest of four boys.
- 30:19Speaker 3: So I was always kind of hanging with the fellas
- 30:21Speaker 3: and always uh, you know, competing and laughing. And so
- 30:25Speaker 3: through through this career, through this whole journey of the NBA,
- 30:29Speaker 3: you meet so many cool people. You're you're lucky enough
- 30:31Speaker 3: to do so many cool things and events and people
- 30:35Speaker 3: you would never think you're gonna, you know, meet, let
- 30:38Speaker 3: alone be friends with. And Dirk Novinsky was he was
- 30:41Speaker 3: a hero of mine, like mkhale and the guy was
- 30:43Speaker 3: at my wedding last year, like it's it's it's it's
- 30:47Speaker 3: really it's just crazy how fast everything happens. And I
- 30:50Speaker 3: think that's just kind of type of personality and and
- 30:53Speaker 3: and who I've always been, who I always will be,
- 30:57Speaker 3: and uh, it's it's it's it's been a lot of fun.
- 31:01Speaker 4: Channa, I was talking a bunch of guys and we
- 31:02Speaker 4: just I would love to hear your opinion on it
- 31:04Speaker 4: because you're in it. But these insiders now working with
- 31:07Speaker 4: the sports books, is that like the new age we're
- 31:09Speaker 4: in now, we're like, you know again, it's not Sean's fall,
- 31:13Speaker 4: but he's throwing tons of shade at Wach because we
- 31:14Speaker 4: just trying to make him look bad, right with these reports,
- 31:18Speaker 4: there's a whole market behind it, like you can bet
- 31:20Speaker 4: on who's going to be the lakers next head coach.
- 31:23Speaker 3: Again, Sean's just trying to do his job, right.
- 31:25Speaker 4: Does he know he's moving whole markets for the company
- 31:27Speaker 4: he works for or is that not even crossing his
- 31:29Speaker 4: brain where he's just doing his job?
- 31:31Speaker 3: No, dude, he's Scham's I can only speak on he's
- 31:34Speaker 3: a savant. He he doesn't think about Oh, I'm gonna
- 31:37Speaker 3: tweet this about prazingis tonight because it's gonna move the
- 31:40Speaker 3: line and we're gonna he don't. He just probably doesn't
- 31:42Speaker 3: even gamble. First of all, we can't even gamble in
- 31:44Speaker 3: California and fantal. So, uh, the whole hym and Woj's
- 31:48Speaker 3: thing I thought was hysterical yesterday. The whole hy dude,
- 31:51Speaker 3: that's that's because you know, they have their whole That's
- 31:53Speaker 3: how Sham's got into the business, and they've had their
- 31:55Speaker 3: whole tiff, and it's there's two guys, right, It's it's
- 31:58Speaker 3: Woj and Shams. So the fact that they are all
- 32:00Speaker 3: us out trying to outscoop each other is hilarious. But
- 32:03Speaker 3: I work with the dude five days a week and
- 32:05Speaker 3: he's a vault, so I don't know how he does it.
- 32:07Speaker 3: But he's established so many relationships and he doesn't say
- 32:12Speaker 3: a word. Today, I said, I was just sitting there
- 32:13Speaker 3: in the conference room kind of doing the pre show notes,
- 32:15Speaker 3: and I get an alert on my phone and it
- 32:18Speaker 3: says Jerry West had passed, and like he was just
- 32:20Speaker 3: I was just sitting with Sean's for twenty minutes and
- 32:22Speaker 3: he didn't bring it up, didn't mention it one time.
- 32:23Speaker 3: So it's just he's just a machine. Dude, and he's
- 32:26Speaker 3: just always working. You watch our show half the time
- 32:28Speaker 3: he's on his phone. I always want to play a
- 32:30Speaker 3: prank com and steal his phone just to see how
- 32:32Speaker 3: much he'd fucking panic. But no, it's it is crazy
- 32:36Speaker 3: because they do have the power, and obviously you see that,
- 32:38Speaker 3: and this Lakers search in particular, it was crazy because
- 32:41Speaker 3: it's always been JJJJJJ and then you you look back
- 32:46Speaker 3: and you're like, wait, Woj works with him at ESPN.
- 32:48Speaker 3: He has kind of stayed away from it, so it
- 32:50Speaker 3: doesn't really make sense because wouldn't he have the end
- 32:52Speaker 3: before Sham's And then this whole bomb gets dropped about
- 32:55Speaker 3: Dan Hurley and then Dan but they hadn't met with
- 32:58Speaker 3: him yet and they hadn't even made it an offer,
- 33:00Speaker 3: So like it's hard. I guess it's it's funny, Like
- 33:02Speaker 3: I think both of them are very good at their job.
- 33:05Speaker 3: They're both very credible, But it's funny when there's a
- 33:08Speaker 3: situation like this, Yeah, like you could be doing a
- 33:10Speaker 3: favor for somebody. Wach could be posting that for leverage
- 33:13Speaker 3: for Hurley because he's got friends with him. Now he's
- 33:15Speaker 3: got leverage to go back to Yukon hit them over
- 33:17Speaker 3: the head for more money. So when you have guys
- 33:19Speaker 3: like that with so much power, uh, it is tricky.
- 33:23Speaker 3: But unfortunately Shams doesn't dine me out with any info.
- 33:26Speaker 3: That bastard. He doesn't tell me anything, or else I'd
- 33:29Speaker 3: be putting a lot of money on who the Lakers
- 33:31Speaker 3: next coach is. I work with the guy every day.
- 33:33Speaker 3: I still don't fucking know.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Well, don't forget Woj.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Not only is he locked in through the NBA as
- 33:42Speaker 1: is Shams. Woj also literally wrote the book Bob Hurley Sr.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Like he you know, has a famous, incredible best selling
- 33:52Speaker 1: book about Bob Hurley and his high school coaching career
- 33:57Speaker 1: long before he became a massive NBA insider. So both
- 34:02Speaker 1: dudes are crazy connected and this story has seemed to
- 34:06Speaker 1: put them in the center of everything they are connected
- 34:09Speaker 1: to beyond their next level of connection.
- 34:12Speaker 3: And by the way, every everything is relationship driven and
- 34:16Speaker 3: life Like Billy Donovan Junior just got the J League
- 34:19Speaker 3: coach of the Chicago Bulls. Like you think that was
- 34:20Speaker 3: because he's the best candid. You think it's because they
- 34:22Speaker 3: love ability, you know what I mean? Like every it
- 34:24Speaker 3: happens everywhere You're seeing it with Brownie James. You see
- 34:29Speaker 3: all the time with coaches getting hired and fired based
- 34:32Speaker 3: on relationships with the star players. So in every aspect,
- 34:35Speaker 3: especially in sports and especially in media, it comes down
- 34:39Speaker 3: to relate. Like right now, I could have Seauan's tweet
- 34:41Speaker 3: something as a favor for me, Like, you know what
- 34:43Speaker 3: I mean? Is he doing? Would he do that? Would
- 34:45Speaker 3: it hurts you know? Then then he's got to figure
- 34:47Speaker 3: that out himself. But it's all come on relationships.
- 34:52Speaker 2: Simon.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Can you name the fastest growing ticketing app in the
- 34:55Speaker 1: United States?
- 34:56Speaker 3: Game Time?
- 34:58Speaker 1: That's right, It's game Time. I love game Time for
- 35:00Speaker 1: two reasons. First, they still sponsor this show. Second, I
- 35:03Speaker 1: use game Time all the time. They have amazing last
- 35:06Speaker 1: minute deals, including pro in college sports. I'm actually opening
- 35:11Speaker 1: the game Time app right now from my house here
- 35:13Speaker 1: in Connecticut. Guess what the hottest team in baseball? The
- 35:16Speaker 1: New York Yankees. I can get into see them.
- 35:20Speaker 2: For thirty bucks.
- 35:22Speaker 1: No matter where you live, download the game Time app,
- 35:25Speaker 1: get out have some fun this week.
- 35:27Speaker 2: You deserve it.

- 35:30Speaker 1: first purchase. Terms apply again. Just download the game Time
- 35:34Speaker 1: app and use Code Favorites for twenty dollars off your
- 35:37Speaker 1: first purchase, last minute tickets, lowest prices guaranteed. You mentioned
- 35:43Speaker 1: Rondo and he's a guy who famously, from players' points
- 35:48Speaker 1: of view, is a basketball savant, can remember anything. People
- 35:52Speaker 1: I remember when he was on the Celtics would talk
- 35:54Speaker 1: about him as if he was the most brilliant player
- 35:56Speaker 1: in the league and would be an incredible coach one day.
- 36:00Speaker 2: What's it like to play with him?
- 36:01Speaker 1: Explain sort of the difference at at a level between
- 36:04Speaker 1: what he can see versus what other players see.
- 36:06Speaker 3: Well, I think that's why him and Rick Carlo also,
- 36:09Speaker 3: but it heads so much just because Rick is very
- 36:11Speaker 3: hands on, wants to call a set each time down
- 36:14Speaker 3: the floor. He wants his point guard to kind of
- 36:16Speaker 3: look at him and get a play call. Rondo is
- 36:20Speaker 3: a coach on the floor and he wants to kind
- 36:23Speaker 3: of facilitate the offense and and just go off his feel,
- 36:28Speaker 3: which he had earned that right at that time of
- 36:30Speaker 3: his career. He's a champion, he's super successful. He was
- 36:33Speaker 3: an absolute stud and it's the way he carries himself.
- 36:36Speaker 3: He sees things faster, he sees things developed before most
- 36:40Speaker 3: coaches do. So I think when you have that sort
- 36:43Speaker 3: of brain and that sort of IQ, it is tough
- 36:45Speaker 3: to adapt to a coach. And that's why their their
- 36:48Speaker 3: relationship went south. But it was awesome playing with him.
- 36:52Speaker 3: You basically always had to have your hands up and
- 36:54Speaker 3: ready because he could just you know, throw a one
- 36:57Speaker 3: hand skip pass across the corridor. He could throw a
- 36:59Speaker 3: no look behind the back time to you just just
- 37:02Speaker 3: add of nowhere. So playing with that, he just, guys,
- 37:05Speaker 3: make the game easier for you. Rondo made the game
- 37:08Speaker 3: a lot easier. He gets you a lot of open looks.
- 37:11Speaker 3: Think about this, Think about how good of a passer
- 37:13Speaker 3: and how easy he makes the eamp players. And he
- 37:15Speaker 3: can't shoot. So that guy is you know what I mean.
- 37:17Speaker 3: It's like most time, most times like a Steph Curry.
- 37:19Speaker 3: Most time it's like this, who draws so much attention? Where? Okay,
- 37:22Speaker 3: swing swing? Now, Draymond Green has a wide open three rondo.
- 37:26Speaker 3: They try and guard him a bunch of different ways.
- 37:28Speaker 3: They try and pressure him, they try and play up
- 37:30Speaker 3: on him, then they play back on him because he
- 37:31Speaker 3: can't shoot, But then that gives him even more of
- 37:33Speaker 3: a look because he can see more things. So it's
- 37:37Speaker 3: he he's a special, special player and he's awesome. We
- 37:41Speaker 3: had him on the show too. I can definitely see
- 37:43Speaker 3: in him be a coach because, like I said, the
- 37:45Speaker 3: way he carries himself, the way he sees the game,
- 37:48Speaker 3: he can really help some of these young guards in
- 37:51Speaker 3: the league now kind of facilitate and navigate throughout their career.
- 37:55Speaker 4: Now, like you were saying, you became a starter, you know,
- 37:58Speaker 4: six games, and you remember like a real welcome to
- 38:00Speaker 4: the league kind of rookie moment you had where you
- 38:02Speaker 4: were just like, oh man, this is this is different.
- 38:05Speaker 3: H Yeah. I had a couple of the draft night
- 38:08Speaker 3: call from Kevin McHale was fucking bonkers. I was like
- 38:11Speaker 3: this is real, Like I'm in the NBA, Like this
- 38:14Speaker 3: is nuts. And then I remember my Courtney Lee, who
- 38:19Speaker 3: was my boy's in my wedding party. He was like
- 38:24Speaker 3: my vet and I had known him from Orlando just
- 38:26Speaker 3: growing up there when he put on the magic we
- 38:27Speaker 3: played pick up together in the summers and stuff, and
- 38:30Speaker 3: he was my VET. When I get drafted to Houston,
- 38:33Speaker 3: I'm the second round pick, and they drafted Marcus Morris
- 38:37Speaker 3: first round like end of lottery, and then they drafted
- 38:40Speaker 3: a guy demonis mationis the Lithuanian lefty. He was like, there,
- 38:44Speaker 3: you know, twenty fourth pick or something. So we go
- 38:48Speaker 3: in there and Courtney Lee is talking about he's showing
- 38:50Speaker 3: me the rope, showing me this, showing me that, and
- 38:53Speaker 3: he's saying, hey, like the Rockets are notorious for sending
- 38:56Speaker 3: guys to the G League. She used to be called
- 38:58Speaker 3: the D League when I was playing, So be prepared,
- 39:01Speaker 3: and I remember like going to the by the way,
- 39:03Speaker 3: when going to the D League Ord League back then
- 39:05Speaker 3: was like it was. It was hard enough to take
- 39:07Speaker 3: it as an insult because you're at the top, you
- 39:09Speaker 3: get drafted, you go to training camp, you're in the NBA.
- 39:11Speaker 3: Then you got to you know, take the bus and
- 39:13Speaker 3: commercial fights in Delaware and like crazy shit. So it's
- 39:16Speaker 3: kind of a it's it's a roller coaster. And so
- 39:18Speaker 3: I remember I was like he said that, and I
- 39:20Speaker 3: was like, man, I don't I don't want to go
- 39:22Speaker 3: to the D League. And we start off and we lose,
- 39:25Speaker 3: and Marcus is getting some minutes, Demo is getting some minutes.
- 39:28Speaker 3: I'm not playing at all. And I remember there was
- 39:31Speaker 3: a game, like the third or fourth game, we were
- 39:33Speaker 3: getting blown out and McHale put me in and I
- 39:35Speaker 3: had like a quick ten and I remember and I
- 39:38Speaker 3: was diving on the floor, and I remember there was
- 39:40Speaker 3: a lockout in my draft here where I didn't the
- 39:42Speaker 3: team I played in France was called Chole. They didn't
- 39:45Speaker 3: give me, they didn't give me my clearance to come
- 39:48Speaker 3: back to the NBA. So I went to training camp
- 39:51Speaker 3: and I had to sit there and watch like the
- 39:53Speaker 3: first four days of training camp, not able to participate
- 39:56Speaker 3: because the team I wouln't played. So I remember I
- 39:59Speaker 3: took that time and I'm sitting there watching everything. I'm
- 40:01Speaker 3: seeing whatever, I'm hearing, all the terminology, and these guys
- 40:04Speaker 3: do they're going to a days. They're getting killed. So
- 40:06Speaker 3: I go in the fourth or fifth day, they're exhausted,
- 40:10Speaker 3: and I remember, I'm fresh, I'm fucking flying around everywhere.
- 40:13Speaker 3: I'm taking charges, I'm diving on the floor. Fourth game,
- 40:17Speaker 3: they said, hey, come to the come to the come
- 40:20Speaker 3: to the bus is leaving here or whatever. We're going
- 40:22Speaker 3: to the plane. And I go and I get on
- 40:24Speaker 3: the plane like the fifth game of the year, and
- 40:27Speaker 3: Marcus Morris isn't there, and I'm like, where's Marcus. He's
- 40:31Speaker 3: like Marcus went to the D League, and I remember
- 40:34Speaker 3: looking at Courtney Lee like holy shit, like like I
- 40:37Speaker 3: didn't have to go to the D League. Marcus Morris
- 40:39Speaker 3: the lottery pick went and I ended up starting that game.
- 40:43Speaker 3: So now I'm like, I'm going to the I'm going
- 40:45Speaker 3: to the practice really thinking I'm literally going to the
- 40:47Speaker 3: D League and I ended up starting the next game
- 40:49Speaker 3: on the Houston Rockets. Like that to me was like, Okay,
- 40:52Speaker 3: this is now. Now it's real, now it's on.
- 40:55Speaker 1: But look then, I think it's early the next year.
- 40:59Speaker 1: This is this is the Wayback Machine and the Chandler
- 41:02Speaker 1: Parsons Hall of Fame. I think it's November of twenty twelve.
- 41:07Speaker 1: You go, within the span of two weeks career highs.
- 41:11Speaker 1: I think against the Knicks and the Heat. If I'm
- 41:14Speaker 1: not mistaken, maybe it's the MAVs in the Heat. I
- 41:17Speaker 1: can't remember exactly, but you got to be thinking you're
- 41:20Speaker 1: not even like a full year in the league because
- 41:23Speaker 1: of the lockout. You're going twenty five plus thirty plus
- 41:27Speaker 1: at that moment, are you like, are people starting to
- 41:30Speaker 1: treat you differently? And I don't mean like, oh my
- 41:33Speaker 1: godsh Chandler Parsons, But like defensively, do you see adjustments?
- 41:36Speaker 1: Are teammates treating you differently, coaches treating you differently?
- 41:39Speaker 2: What happens then?
- 41:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean when you start playing more and you
- 41:43Speaker 3: start playing more minutes, you don't practice as much the
- 41:46Speaker 3: next day, you know, I mean, you're not one of
- 41:47Speaker 3: the guys that are having to play one on one
- 41:49Speaker 3: afterwards to stay in shape. So that'll immediately change. But
- 41:53Speaker 3: you're still a rookie. I'm still a rookie on this
- 41:55Speaker 3: team with you know, Luis Skola and Kevin Martin, Kyle
- 41:59Speaker 3: Lowry carrying their luggage. I'm still doing things like that.
- 42:02Speaker 3: I'm just starting, you know, hooping and yeah, that that
- 42:07Speaker 3: just it all happened so fast, dude, And you don't
- 42:10Speaker 3: get treated differently. Where you get a little, you get
- 42:12Speaker 3: a lot of attention. And me, I was a second
- 42:13Speaker 3: round pick, so I was almost like like a pleasant surprise.
- 42:16Speaker 3: I wasn't People didn't think I was going to be
- 42:18Speaker 3: that good, which is funny to me. To me, I
- 42:20Speaker 3: was a four year college player. I was ready to play.
- 42:22Speaker 3: I think the lockout really helped me because the guys
- 42:25Speaker 3: took that time off pretty much and I played in
- 42:27Speaker 3: the euro League for two or three months. So when
- 42:30Speaker 3: I was done in the lockout and then I was
- 42:32Speaker 3: in tip top shape. I was just playing against you know,
- 42:34Speaker 3: in the second best league in the world, so I
- 42:36Speaker 3: was ready to compete right away. So I think that
- 42:39Speaker 3: time lockout actually kind of helped me in a weird way.
- 42:44Speaker 3: But yeah, it was, it was It was crazy, and
- 42:46Speaker 3: like I said, it all just happened so fast. And
- 42:48Speaker 3: then there's always that doubt right of whether you can
- 42:51Speaker 3: fit and whether you whether you're good enough. Especially for me. Dude,
- 42:55Speaker 3: I'm just a normal, slow, white dude from Orlando that
- 42:57Speaker 3: used to think guys are fucking aliens. When I'd see
- 42:59Speaker 3: him the mall on Orlando, I remember, I freaked out
- 43:02Speaker 3: and I see like Turklou got the mall like I.
- 43:05Speaker 3: These guys were my heroes. And now I'm starting in
- 43:08Speaker 3: the NBA playing for Kevin McHale, like ball in my
- 43:11Speaker 3: hands in the fourth quarter. It was just a it
- 43:14Speaker 3: was a whirlwind, and it's it's I was lucky enough
- 43:18Speaker 3: to play in a situation where I got minutes right away.
- 43:21Speaker 3: There's a lot of talented dudes that didn't get that opportunity.
- 43:23Speaker 3: I always say marsham Brooks. You guys remember marsham Brooks. Yeah,
- 43:27Speaker 3: kid from Providence. He was a stud And I'm just
- 43:30Speaker 3: whatever opportunity he had, it wasn't the right fit. It
- 43:33Speaker 3: was a bad situation. And now he you know, he
- 43:35Speaker 3: had to go overseas and play in China and so like,
- 43:37Speaker 3: I was lucky enough to get a situation where I
- 43:40Speaker 3: got the right system, the right players, the right coach
- 43:43Speaker 3: that believed in me early. And I took advantage of that.
- 43:46Speaker 3: But it could have easily it went the other way.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Before we let you go.
- 43:51Speaker 1: Uh, NBA draft coming up, no standout, no women and
- 43:57Speaker 1: Yama uh not even a Palo Bancaro. Give us your
- 44:02Speaker 1: take on how this draft looks from a analyst and
- 44:08Speaker 1: also former player perspective.
- 44:10Speaker 3: Yeah, well, we don't know yet. There could be a
- 44:12Speaker 3: Palo in this draft, right, We have no idea. I
- 44:14Speaker 3: went to the gym the other day my agent, James
- 44:16Speaker 3: Dunleevy at Excel Sports. They repped Mantas. This kid's a
- 44:22Speaker 3: freak and I watched him. He's he's one of the
- 44:25Speaker 3: more athletic kids I've ever seen. This kid's bounce is
- 44:29Speaker 3: nuts and he needs to work on a shot a
- 44:31Speaker 3: little bit. It's a little slow and a kind of
- 44:32Speaker 3: funny release. But this kid's talking shit, He's oozing with confidence.
- 44:37Speaker 3: This freak athlete, I mean freak, So I love him
- 44:43Speaker 3: a lot. I don't know. I'm not familiar with the
- 44:44Speaker 3: two French kids. I could go one and two honestly
- 44:47Speaker 3: too much. But I also love Jacobe Walker from Baylor.
- 44:49Speaker 3: He's a six nine to sixty ten shooter. The way
- 44:51Speaker 3: he moves, the way he can get a quick release
- 44:53Speaker 3: come off screens, I love him. I think he's kind
- 44:56Speaker 3: of fallen off for whatever reason. You can get him
- 44:58Speaker 3: in like the late lottery. So the's always going to
- 45:00Speaker 3: be talent. There's always going to be surprises. There is
- 45:02Speaker 3: no Zion, there's no Wimby this year, but that's not
- 45:06Speaker 3: to say it couldn't be end up being a really,
- 45:09Speaker 3: really deep draft. So I'm excited for There's going to
- 45:11Speaker 3: be some sleepers in this draft, and there's a lot
- 45:13Speaker 3: of talent always, so these kids are reaching their dreams
- 45:16Speaker 3: and it's happening for them. So I'm excited for that.
- 45:19Speaker 3: But I really like Matis and Jakobe Walker kind of
- 45:22Speaker 3: my two sleepers in this draft.
- 45:26Speaker 1: Chandler Parsons analyst Fan Duel TV run it back with
