Latest / FSU Football: Doak Talk / TONY WHITE's DEFENSIVE DISASTER at FSU: Should he be FIRED TODAY?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Defense.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Defense gave up 50 points to Alabama. This may very
- 0:04Speaker 2: well be the worst defense I have seen at FSU.
- 0:08Speaker 2: That's certainly saying a lot with some of the defensive
- 0:10Speaker 2: coordinators that we have had in recent years. We had
- 0:13Speaker 2: a real good run of defensive coordinators with, of course,
- 0:16Speaker 2: legendary Mickey Andrews. Then we go with Mark Stoops. Then
- 0:20Speaker 2: we transition from Mark Stoops to I forgot my guy's name,
- 0:26Speaker 2: Jeremy Pruitt. Then we go from Jeremy Pruitt to You
- 0:29Speaker 2: start to see the drop-off, right? Charles Kelly, Harlan Barnett,
- 0:32Speaker 2: and Alan Fuller. Not a great run of DCs in
- 0:37Speaker 2: recent years, but again, this, with what I've seen from
- 0:41Speaker 2: Tony White, man, he may be the worst of them all,
- 0:44Speaker 2: and again, that's saying a lot. Wild stat, we have
- 0:46Speaker 2: allowed 50 points four times during Mike Norvell's tenure. Prior
- 0:51Speaker 2: to that, we gave up 50 points four times from
- 0:54Speaker 2: 1986 to 2019. So Mike Novell's tenure started in 2020.
- 1:00Speaker 2: From 2020 to 2026, we have allowed 50 points four times.
- 1:01Speaker 2: From 1986 to 2019, that's what?
- 1:02Speaker 1: 20, 33 years?
- 1:02Speaker 2: In 33 years, we allow 50 points four times. Within six,
- 1:05Speaker 2: going on seven years, We allowed 50 points four times.
- 1:31Speaker 2: That says a lot. Is Micah Porter an issue as
- 1:34Speaker 2: well as far as the defense? Because clearly I think
- 1:36Speaker 2: it has to be because if you look at Tony White,
- 1:38Speaker 2: he was very successful prior to FSU. Nebraska, really good defense.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Even prior to Nebraska, Syracuse had a really good defense.
- 1:45Speaker 2: We saw those guys in the ACC, a really good defense.
- 1:48Speaker 2: The defense work, guys bought in. What's the issue now?
- 1:51Speaker 2: I don't really, and it's crazy because even going back
- 1:56Speaker 2: to previous coaches and that type of deal, I do
- 1:59Speaker 2: know that Adam Fuller, he was good at Memphis and
- 2:03Speaker 2: good at Marshall, if I'm not mistaken. But again, that's G5.
- 2:06Speaker 2: But you go back to Harlem Barnett, Michigan State. Michigan
- 2:09Speaker 2: State had pretty good defenses. Then you come to Florida State,
- 2:11Speaker 2: seems like nothing, like he forgot to coach. And that's
- 2:14Speaker 2: pretty much what we see from Tony White, in my opinion.
- 2:17Speaker 2: I don't know what the issue could be. But new
- 2:21Speaker 2: coaches come to FSU and seem like they never coached
- 2:24Speaker 2: football before.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Can't be a coincidence.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Maybe it's a reflection from the head coach. We gave
- 2:29Speaker 2: up 567 yards of total offense to Alabama. Within the
- 2:34Speaker 2: last two games combined, SFU and Alabama, we have given
- 2:37Speaker 2: up 1,152.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Repeat that again.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Within the last two games, we have given up 1,152
- 2:40Speaker 2: yards within the.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Last two games. Clearly, the 3-3-5 isn't working, and things
- 2:45Speaker 1: pretty much wouldn't.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Kalen DeBoer figured out what we were doing and how
- 2:59Speaker 2: they could expose us.
- 3:00Speaker 1: They exposed us. Where did they attack? They attacked the edge, right,
- 3:03Speaker 1: from a running football standpoint.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Up the middle wasn't really– between the tackles wasn't really
- 3:09Speaker 2: working for Bama until we got later in the game
- 3:11Speaker 2: when our defensive line was just gashed due to depth.
- 3:14Speaker 1: That's another issue we're going to talk about.
- 3:15Speaker 2: That's when Bama just did what the hell they wanted
- 3:19Speaker 2: to with us at the tail end of the game.
- 3:22Speaker 2: You know, FSU scored that touchdown. We're down seven at
- 3:24Speaker 2: a certain point in time. And we need the ball
- 3:27Speaker 2: back to get the offensive chance. Once we scored that touchdown,
- 3:29Speaker 2: I said in my head, there's no way in hell.
- 3:32Speaker 2: And we kind of put the game in the defense's hands.
- 3:37Speaker 2: There's no way in hell we get that ball back
- 3:39Speaker 2: with a chance to win. They're not going to stop
- 3:40Speaker 2: these guys from scoring. They're not going to get a
- 3:43Speaker 2: three out of the center to give our offense enough time.
- 3:45Speaker 2: We've seen this multiple times before, even going back to, well,
- 3:49Speaker 2: I guess you could say SMU gave the defense, the
- 3:52Speaker 2: defense gave the offense a few chances and SMU the
- 3:54Speaker 2: interceptions and The turnovers we didn't capitalize on. But it
- 3:59Speaker 2: was just when one team, one side is clicking the
- 4:02Speaker 2: other side, I don't know, man. We can't really get
- 4:04Speaker 2: our own way. But once I saw the offense score
- 4:06Speaker 2: that touchdown and we put the onus back on the
- 4:08Speaker 2: defense to get a stop, I knew it wasn't going
- 4:11Speaker 2: to happen with how things were panning out for FSU.
- 4:16Speaker 2: But again, within the last two games, 1,152 yards, and
- 4:18Speaker 2: we're talking about Florida State, right?
- 4:22Speaker 1: Florida State. And a lot of this stuff is just.
- 4:25Speaker 2: It's not necessarily just really getting our schemes or a
- 4:27Speaker 2: hell of a game plan for the offenses. It's self
- 4:30Speaker 2: inflicted wounds that we do over and over again to ourselves. Alignment,
- 4:37Speaker 2: not being set up in that type of deal, like
- 4:39Speaker 2: that screen pass to the receiver that went for like
- 4:42Speaker 2: 50 or 60 yards for a touchdown. It should have
- 4:44Speaker 2: been a holding call on the corner, but again, I'm
- 4:46Speaker 2: not going to cry about that. Or as far as
- 4:49Speaker 2: that take for tech, we should have been better aligned
- 4:52Speaker 2: to prevent that. Again, I think it was like three by,
- 4:57Speaker 2: three by, yeah, trips to the side. And we only
- 4:59Speaker 2: had two or so defenders to cover those guys. And
- 5:03Speaker 2: we were eight yards off again. So much space in
- 5:06Speaker 2: between the offense and the defense. We're outflanked from a
- 5:09Speaker 2: numbers standpoint, three to two. And they just simply.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Used numbers.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Used numbers and those guys made effective blocks to make
- 5:18Speaker 2: the play happen. Stuff like that cannot happen from an
- 5:20Speaker 2: alignment standpoint, from defense. getting a defensive call, whatever it
- 5:24Speaker 2: may be, man. If you look at a steal shot
- 5:26Speaker 2: for that play, there's no way in hell we should
- 5:28Speaker 2: have been in line like that at all. But again,
- 5:31Speaker 2: that 3-3-5 just isn't working. They attacked the edges and
- 5:35Speaker 2: pretty much did whatever they wanted to. We don't have
- 5:36Speaker 2: any true edge setters at all. None.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Literally no edge setters.
- 5:41Speaker 2: And this is one of my biggest gripes with Tony
- 5:45Speaker 2: White in the defense and what we.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Kind of saw from him in their philosophies.
- 5:51Speaker 2: If you guys remember within this offense, they said they're
- 5:53Speaker 2: sacrificing size up front for speed. They feel like the
- 5:57Speaker 2: speed up front would make the run defense a lot
- 5:59Speaker 2: more effective. That's when I... I never heard that shit
- 6:03Speaker 2: before in my life. Sacrificing size for speed up front.
- 6:07Speaker 2: First of all, we're Florida State. We're Florida State. We
- 6:12Speaker 2: are Florida State. You're not at Syracuse. You're not recruiting
- 6:15Speaker 2: guys at Syracuse. Even at Nebraska, you had... from a
- 6:20Speaker 2: defensive line and front seven standpoint, those guys look like
- 6:22Speaker 2: look the part. You got some really good defensive line
- 6:25Speaker 2: in Nebraska, really good defensive line. A lot of those
- 6:27Speaker 2: guys transferred from Nebraska, went elsewhere, made a lot of plays,
- 6:31Speaker 2: but you had really good.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I don't get it.
- 6:34Speaker 2: You had really good, good guys on the defensive line
- 6:36Speaker 2: over at those schools. And to say you're sacrificing, sacrificing
- 6:40Speaker 2: size to speed up front. We're Florida state. You can
- 6:44Speaker 2: get both. Like we're Florida state. We're in a rich
- 6:47Speaker 2: challenge state. Your recruiting area is, from Georgia, Alabama, North Florida,
- 6:53Speaker 2: Central Florida, South Florida. You shot my guy Grimes. He says,
- 6:56Speaker 2: you don't need to leave within a 250 mile radius
- 6:59Speaker 2: of Florida state to get the talent you need.
- 7:00Speaker 1: And it is correct.
- 7:01Speaker 2: So I say that to say this, it's no need
- 7:04Speaker 2: to sacrifice size up front for speed. When you're at
- 7:07Speaker 2: Florida state, you could get both. And I mean, we've
- 7:09Speaker 2: seen both with the defensive quarters. I stated that weren't
- 7:11Speaker 2: that good. We've seen both Charles Kelly. He had granted
- 7:16Speaker 2: rate recruiting from Jim O'Fisher doing the tail end. Of course,
- 7:19Speaker 2: from a defensive standpoint, but we had size with Charles Kelly,
- 7:22Speaker 2: and we had speed.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Adam Fuller, Mike's previous defensive coordinator. We had both. Look
- 7:28Speaker 1: at our defensive line. Fabian, you'll love it.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Brayden Fisk, Jermaine Johnson, Jared Verst, Josh Farmer, Darrell Jackson.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Like we had, then you look on the back end
- 7:43Speaker 2: behind that, you know, you had the Caden Deloach's, Taylor Bethune's,
- 7:46Speaker 2: that type of deal, and of course the secondary, but
- 7:47Speaker 2: we had size and speed under Alan Fuller. So why
- 7:50Speaker 2: are you, you don't have to do that at Florida State, man.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Like there's some certain schools you can do that, but
- 7:56Speaker 2: when you're at Florida State, a premier program from a
- 8:02Speaker 2: traditional standpoint, especially the defense as well, just overall, but
- 8:06Speaker 2: defensive standpoint, you guys know we bring in hella guys, right?
- 8:09Speaker 1: From the defensive line, linebacker room, the defensive back room,
- 8:12Speaker 1: it's Florida State.
- 8:12Speaker 2: We always have great athletes, physical athletes and that type
- 8:16Speaker 2: of deal, fast guys, sideline to sideline, whatever it may be.
- 8:19Speaker 2: You don't need to sacrifice size for speed at a
- 8:21Speaker 2: school like Florida State.
- 8:22Speaker 1: You can get both.
- 8:23Speaker 2: At certain schools, Miami, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Ohio State, Bama,
- 8:30Speaker 2: certain schools, LSUs, you don't have to sacrifice one or
- 8:34Speaker 2: the other. You get both because you put out both
- 8:38Speaker 2: in the past, you develop both in the past, and
- 8:40Speaker 2: you get the best output by recruiting the best damn players.
- 8:43Speaker 2: And that's size, speed, all of the above. So once
- 8:46Speaker 2: we went that route, it really threw me for a
- 8:50Speaker 2: loop and I'm hearing that. And again, my biggest issue
- 8:53Speaker 2: with him and Pop Rose is just the lack of
- 8:55Speaker 2: additions as well from a quality guy standpoint on the
- 8:58Speaker 2: defensive line. That's what I really thought we was getting
- 9:00Speaker 2: once we hired Tony White and then we transitioned from
- 9:03Speaker 2: Odell and got a younger defensive line coach who knows
- 9:06Speaker 2: what it looks like. If you look at what Nebraska
- 9:07Speaker 2: had on the defensive line, It was pretty damn good.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Those guys didn't give a shit in the run game.
- 9:12Speaker 2: I believe Tony White, they didn't have a 100-yard rusher
- 9:14Speaker 2: or something. It was a streak going on there. They
- 9:17Speaker 2: held Ohio State, who was the eventual national championship, to
- 9:20Speaker 2: less than 300 yards. That's crazy as hell. That's why
- 9:25Speaker 2: I'm so baffled. They held Ohio State the national champion
- 9:28Speaker 2: that year. Jeremiah Smith, all the receivers they had, running backs,
- 9:31Speaker 2: they had two running backs go second round. Just a
- 9:33Speaker 2: loaded offense, right? Held those guys to less than 300 yards,
- 9:37Speaker 2: but then we have The past two games, we give
- 9:40Speaker 2: over 1,000 yards to teams with way less talent. And
- 9:44Speaker 2: you would think at Florida State we have more talent
- 9:47Speaker 2: than Nebraska, but that's clearly not the case.
- 9:50Speaker 1: But that's fine.
- 9:51Speaker 2: You bring in the coaches from Nebraska to supplement that,
- 9:55Speaker 2: and we still don't do that as far as emphasize
- 9:58Speaker 2: the defensive line and bring guys in from a quality
- 10:01Speaker 2: depth standpoint on a defensive line. Like it's, it's, it's crazy.
- 10:05Speaker 2: And that's kind of how the game got away a
- 10:08Speaker 2: little bit in the second half.
- 10:09Speaker 1: It's just, we didn't have the guys up front and
- 10:11Speaker 1: you look on the flip end.
- 10:13Speaker 2: And if you guys listen to the podcast or the,
- 10:16Speaker 2: the pregame podcast, I went over with the, with the
- 10:18Speaker 2: Bama two, four, seven reporter. Their defensive line was the highlight,
- 10:22Speaker 2: and he highlighted the depth they had. They're playing 10 guys.
- 10:24Speaker 2: They're rotating. Those guys are fresh. It's recruiting at a
- 10:29Speaker 2: high clip in the trenches and reaping the reward of it.
- 10:32Speaker 1: And that showed.
- 10:34Speaker 2: It showed for us as well, too, as far as
- 10:36Speaker 2: what happens when you don't prioritize the defensive line and
- 10:41Speaker 2: recruiting that type of deal. Motherfuckers in that fourth quarter,
- 10:46Speaker 2: that shit was embarrassing, man. It was like 10 yards apart.
- 10:49Speaker 2: running the football 10 yards apart. They just gave up.
- 10:52Speaker 2: They were out of gas. She was just pathetic, to
- 10:53Speaker 2: be honest with you. But the recruiting differences showed at
- 10:58Speaker 2: a certain point within the game. That's why I feel
- 10:59Speaker 2: like we should have took advantage of the situation early
- 11:02Speaker 2: on when we had that 21-6 lead. But that's my
- 11:06Speaker 2: biggest issue. That's all I have to really say about
- 11:09Speaker 2: Tony White specifically. I just don't think he's the guy, man.
- 11:13Speaker 2: You go from being a guy in Nebraska and Syracuse
- 11:16Speaker 2: to putting out really good defenses and being creative and
- 11:18Speaker 2: exotic in how you're attacking. offenses, and then you come
- 11:21Speaker 2: to Florida State and it's like, oh, that shit goes
- 11:22Speaker 2: out the window and nothing trans. I do want to
- 11:25Speaker 2: say this as well, too. I'll get to that once
- 11:28Speaker 2: we get to the pass game. But yeah, going to
- 11:35Speaker 2: the 567 they had on total offense, they had 320
- 11:37Speaker 2: through the air and an embarrassing 247 on the ground.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Like I said, we played great for the first quarter
- 11:43Speaker 2: and a half and everything just pretty much imploded. I'm sorry,
- 11:46Speaker 2: if you get 36... If you get 36 points for
- 11:49Speaker 2: your offense, like, there's no.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Way in hell you should lose a game at Florida State.
- 11:53Speaker 1: No way in hell.
- 11:54Speaker 2: If your offense scores 36 points in a game, let
- 11:57Speaker 2: me repeat this again, there is no way in hell
- 12:01Speaker 2: you should lose that game at Florida State University. Like,
- 12:07Speaker 2: you give Mickey Andrews fucking 36 points a game, like,
- 12:10Speaker 2: should you give Mickey Andrews 36 points a game during
- 12:12Speaker 2: the last decade? That whole, and that's what, Mickey Andrews
- 12:16Speaker 2: is on the tail end, you can get a few
- 12:18Speaker 2: 36 points going in that time frame. That whole quote-unquote
- 12:21Speaker 2: lost decade, because we see what that shit really was
- 12:24Speaker 2: and where we're in now. The quote-unquote lost decade, the
- 12:28Speaker 2: false lost decade, we'll use that terminology. If you give
- 12:32Speaker 2: Mickey Andrews 36, if Jeff Bowden scores fucking 36 points
- 12:35Speaker 2: a game, an old-ass Mickey Andrews, a washed-past-his-time Mickey Andrews,
- 12:41Speaker 2: looks like he gives you what you need. It's just
- 12:44Speaker 2: crazy that at a university like Florida State, you see
- 12:46Speaker 2: the frustration from Mike on the sideline in certain situations,
- 12:49Speaker 2: him wanting the ball back, but the defense couldn't get
- 12:51Speaker 2: the ball back at the same damn time. It falls
- 12:54Speaker 2: on you because you're the guy that hired these coaches
- 12:56Speaker 2: in the first place.
- 12:59Speaker 1: 27 rushing yards on 14 carries.
- 13:01Speaker 2: This is a crazy stat, and it kind of shows
- 13:03Speaker 2: what I just said about the depth and that type
- 13:05Speaker 2: of deal and how it just wore on us as
- 13:08Speaker 2: the game went on. Again, that's it falls on the staff, man.
- 13:12Speaker 2: You knew what you had, and they felt like this
- 13:14Speaker 2: was enough from a defensive line standpoint, and everyone within
- 13:16Speaker 2: the fan base, outside looking in, like, and that's the
- 13:20Speaker 2: part I really don't understand. Like, we were on the
- 13:21Speaker 2: outside looking in. We're like, no, that shit's not enough.
- 13:24Speaker 2: It's not enough. How can you be inside? Like, do
- 13:26Speaker 2: you not know what it really looks like? But again,
- 13:28Speaker 2: I can't say that because, again, you're at Nebraska, and
- 13:31Speaker 2: the shit looked like you knew what it looked like.
- 13:34Speaker 2: But again, 27 rushing yards and 14 carries in the
- 13:37Speaker 2: first half. They had 220 Rushing yards on 22 attempts
- 13:43Speaker 2: in the second half. Boy, that's some losing football. 220
- 13:52Speaker 2: rushing yards on 22 attempts in the second half.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Let me do some math on that shit real quick.
- 14:00Speaker 1: I want to see that average.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Appreciate you hardening me. I always get my calculator and
- 14:04Speaker 2: sound super producer hard. And that's 10 yards of puck, bro,
- 14:06Speaker 2: in the second half. Running the football. You go from
- 14:14Speaker 2: close to two yards of pop in the first half
- 14:15Speaker 2: to 10 yards of pop in the second half. I mean,
- 14:18Speaker 2: the half was like literally night and day, man. It's crazy.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Tell the two cities. Tell the two cities.
- 14:25Speaker 2: You go from pretty much two yards of rush in
- 14:27Speaker 2: the first half to 10 yards of rush in the
- 14:29Speaker 2: second half.
- 14:30Speaker 1: But it goes to that depth, man, in how these teams.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Like Obama, Georgia, Ohio State, LSU, teams that recruit to
- 14:40Speaker 2: that degree, It's a four-quarter game, and that shit wears
- 14:43Speaker 2: on you, right?
- 14:44Speaker 1: And it's clear as day that in the second half,
- 14:46Speaker 1: we had no answers for those guys.
- 14:48Speaker 2: On top of Caleb DeBoer, who's a hell of an
- 14:53Speaker 2: offensive play caller, figuring out what the fuck Tony White
- 14:55Speaker 2: was doing and taking advantage of it, and Tony White
- 14:58Speaker 2: not making any adjustments due to that. It's a chess
- 15:00Speaker 2: match throughout the game, and pretty much that first half,
- 15:02Speaker 2: first quarter, first quarter and a half, we had Caleb
- 15:07Speaker 2: DeBoer's number.
- 15:08Speaker 1: After that, it was clear that he caught up and
- 15:10Speaker 1: figured out what was going on.
- 15:12Speaker 2: But that's the, and also that's the worst close of
- 15:14Speaker 2: a half or period of football that.
- 15:18Speaker 1: I've seen probably in my life.
- 15:20Speaker 2: And again, I guess you could say even from a
- 15:22Speaker 2: Mike coach team and it kind of symbolizes and summarizes
- 15:26Speaker 2: everything we've seen from the Mike Norvell tenure, right? It
- 15:29Speaker 2: was like a minute and some change left in the half.
- 15:31Speaker 2: We're up really should have been up 21 to six.
- 15:34Speaker 2: If Jabril Rawls doesn't get caught sleeping, that's nothing I'm
- 15:38Speaker 2: discussing second, but real 21 to 13 in the second,
- 15:43Speaker 2: I'm going to set in the second down and six.
- 15:45Speaker 2: This is the transition of plays that happened within. And
- 15:48Speaker 2: it was less than two minutes. That feels too in
- 15:50Speaker 2: the drill. This is what happened within that transition. We
- 15:54Speaker 2: go three players in the pick, right? They go two
- 15:56Speaker 2: players and score a touchdown. We get the ball back.
- 15:59Speaker 2: We go three players in the punt. They get the
- 16:01Speaker 2: ball back. These motherfuckers go two plays and score. Like
- 16:05Speaker 2: within that timeframe, just terrible football, man. Like it's, If
- 16:11Speaker 2: you had a football book and what not to do
- 16:13Speaker 2: in a two-minute drill, that shit would have its own
- 16:18Speaker 2: chapter in the book, pictures and all, in regards to
- 16:21Speaker 2: what not to do to close the second half. On
- 16:24Speaker 2: the flip end, what to do to finish out the
- 16:27Speaker 2: second half, you just put in whatever the fuck Kevin
- 16:30Speaker 2: DeBoer in the office did. You put that film out
- 16:32Speaker 2: and show that. It was just crazy. Terrible football all around,
- 16:36Speaker 2: and you have a 21-point swing just like that. That's
- 16:39Speaker 2: what you have. Alabama down 21-6. You could go 21-6
- 16:42Speaker 2: going into the second half if you play sound football.
- 16:46Speaker 2: But 21-point swing just like that in the second quarter
- 16:50Speaker 2: to close the second quarter, rather. Then everything kind of
- 16:53Speaker 2: imploded from there. Like I said, they did attack the edge.
- 16:56Speaker 2: We have no edge setters. The game went on. You
- 16:58Speaker 2: just saw where he could expose us.
- 17:02Speaker 1: We had one sack on the night. One sack on
- 17:04Speaker 1: the night. One sack. We had one sack on the night,
- 17:10Speaker 1: and that sack came from a corner. A corner.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Now, I will give Tony White credit for he, early
- 17:20Speaker 2: in the first half, second half, he kind of went
- 17:21Speaker 2: away from it. He was exotic in his pressures, right?
- 17:23Speaker 2: He was bringing blitzes from the corner, things like that.
- 17:25Speaker 2: We were getting home in certain situations where we, like
- 17:28Speaker 2: that fourth and two or three, we should have sacked
- 17:30Speaker 2: Keelan Russell, but he ended up breaking a few tackles
- 17:32Speaker 2: and making that play, but I was okay with the
- 17:35Speaker 2: pressure he was bringing, but this defensive line, man, it.
- 17:40Speaker 1: We don't have it. It's just not it. It's crazy.
- 17:42Speaker 2: I've never– we thought last year's pass rush was bad,
- 17:46Speaker 2: and we thought it would be addition by subtraction when
- 17:49Speaker 2: you lose guys like Williams, the defensive end we got
- 17:54Speaker 2: from Nebraska, who did pretty much nothing for FSU. It
- 17:58Speaker 2: seems– it's crazy. You would think it would be addition
- 18:01Speaker 2: by subtraction, but we end up getting worse, man. It's
- 18:03Speaker 2: zero pass rush at all. It's like me being out
- 18:07Speaker 2: there at 36 years old trying to rush to pass him.
- 18:09Speaker 2: I'm just not going to get there. I'm not going
- 18:11Speaker 2: to get home. The quarterback, Keenan Russell, had literally all
- 18:14Speaker 2: day to throw the football. And that's asking a lot
- 18:16Speaker 2: from our secondary that can't cover to save their life, right?
- 18:21Speaker 2: Can't play man coverage well. Can't do zone coverage well.
- 18:24Speaker 2: It's literally a mix of– it's a perfect mix. It
- 18:27Speaker 2: is a perfect mix. You have zero pass rush. You
- 18:31Speaker 2: have all day to throw the football. You have a
- 18:33Speaker 2: secondary that really isn't that good, does not a zone match,
- 18:36Speaker 2: does not a play man coverage, doesn't understand down and distance,
- 18:43Speaker 2: situational football, sticks, that type of deal.
- 18:45Speaker 1: You have the results that we have.
- 18:49Speaker 2: So we're talking about attacking the edge, not being able
- 18:52Speaker 2: to set the edge at all, zero pass rush, zero sacks.
- 18:56Speaker 2: We've got to have a conversation, Nick Williams. I mean,
- 19:01Speaker 2: you're the loudest. Coach on the damn staff, even louder
- 19:04Speaker 2: than Mike Norvell. You're a big rah-rah guy. You need
- 19:07Speaker 2: your damn unit to play rah-rah because they're not playing
- 19:10Speaker 2: at all. It seems like they're just there. It seems like,
- 19:14Speaker 2: to be honest with you, it seems like nothing has
- 19:16Speaker 2: changed from last year as far as Pop Rose coaching
- 19:18Speaker 2: the entire unit. We added you to take pressure off
- 19:23Speaker 2: of Pop Rose to pretty much coach the entire unit,
- 19:25Speaker 2: but it seems like he's still doing that because the
- 19:28Speaker 2: edge rushers are ineffective. No effect at all. Just out
- 19:34Speaker 2: there to be out there. Union isn't playing the run
- 19:38Speaker 2: well or not getting home in.
- 19:39Speaker 1: The pass rush. Again, just lack of depth like I stated. Overall.
- 19:52Speaker 2: That one sack is crazy when you're being from a corner.
- 19:54Speaker 2: And this has been the issue all year. Now this
- 19:56Speaker 2: isn't nothing new. We had a lack of pass rush
- 19:59Speaker 2: against New Mexico State. Definitely had a lack of pass
- 20:03Speaker 2: rush against SMU. So all the things that we as
- 20:06Speaker 2: a fan base were complaining about from New Mexico State
- 20:11Speaker 2: We were right to complain about it because we knew
- 20:13Speaker 2: what was on the schedule, right? We knew the gauntlet
- 20:15Speaker 2: that was coming up. And if you perform this way
- 20:17Speaker 2: against New Mexico State, now granted, your biggest jump is
- 20:20Speaker 2: from game one to game two.
- 20:21Speaker 1: We know that. But just.
- 20:24Speaker 2: That team, defense, whatever, didn't get the benefit of the
- 20:28Speaker 2: doubt or should have get the benefit of the doubt
- 20:29Speaker 2: due to past situations. Two and seven, two and twelve,
- 20:35Speaker 2: two and ten. Five and seven pass situations, right? And
- 20:39Speaker 2: you translate that over to the first game of the year,
- 20:42Speaker 2: and it's somewhat the same. And, of course, SMU has played,
- 20:45Speaker 2: Bama has played, and it's exactly the same, just on
- 20:47Speaker 2: a higher degree because you're playing better talent. Yeah, man,
- 20:58Speaker 2: it's just disappointing, man, as a defensive guy, defensive bad
- 21:02Speaker 2: guy myself. Fan of Florida State, who I truly believe
- 21:05Speaker 2: is DBU. A lot of great defensive backs we've produced
- 21:09Speaker 2: over the years. Put into the league, I mean, decades, decades.
- 21:15Speaker 2: I'm talking from the 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s. Even the
- 21:20Speaker 2: 2020s early on with Mike. He had a run with
- 21:22Speaker 2: guys playing good damn football from a defensive back standpoint.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Getting Jack the High going to the league. Jerry and Jones.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Zariah Thomas. forgot my corners. Renato Green, San Francisco 49ers. Hell,
- 21:40Speaker 2: even prior to that, we had, damn, what's our safety
- 21:44Speaker 2: from South Carolina that transferred over?
- 21:45Speaker 1: It was all ACC. Jamie Robinson. Jamie Robinson.
- 21:49Speaker 2: So we've had, even in the 2020s, we've had good
- 21:53Speaker 2: defensive back. I'm talking about 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s, 2020s.
- 21:59Speaker 2: It's been consistent with FSU having good defensive back play.
- 22:03Speaker 1: And just seeing this is As a.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Fan of Florida State, first off, as a defensive back guy,
- 22:10Speaker 2: it's just disheartening, man.
- 22:11Speaker 1: The kid.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Was 23 for 30 in pass attempts, 320 yards, three touchdowns,
- 22:18Speaker 2: 56 yards rushing on one rushing touchdown as well, so
- 22:22Speaker 2: four touchdowns overall. Had that long touchdown run with this quarterback.
- 22:27Speaker 2: He was literally untouched. There was nobody within five to
- 22:31Speaker 2: ten yards of Russell when he struck out for that
- 22:35Speaker 2: long run. It's just simple stuff, man, that's killing us
- 22:39Speaker 2: along with the lack of talent.
- 22:40Speaker 1: When you have a lack of talent, then when.
- 22:42Speaker 2: You misalign, outflank with three versus two, that type of deal,
- 22:47Speaker 2: you have the results that you have. I want to
- 22:49Speaker 2: speak real quick about a few players to move on
- 22:50Speaker 2: to the offensive side. Jabril Rawls, man, I don't... Jabril Rawls,
- 22:57Speaker 2: I don't know. Lack of discipline, focus, taking plays off.
- 23:00Speaker 2: It's crazy.
- 23:02Speaker 1: As of.
- 23:04Speaker 2: As a defensive back and as a guy that want
- 23:06Speaker 2: to be a high draft pick, you got to go
- 23:07Speaker 2: in down in and down out and play consistently good football.
- 23:11Speaker 1: You got to lock in. You can't.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Take plays off, mental plays off, and just be lax
- 23:17Speaker 2: out there. That's exactly what happened. The same thing that
- 23:19Speaker 2: pretty much happened against SMU happened to him against Bama.
- 23:25Speaker 2: One-on-one coverage. He's just been a lackadaisical in his technique,
- 23:28Speaker 2: going through the emotion. I'm assuming he didn't really think
- 23:30Speaker 2: the ball. I don't know if he think the receiver...
- 23:32Speaker 2: was running a true route the ball was coming as
- 23:33Speaker 2: well whatever but it was just it was just terrible
- 23:36Speaker 2: output this down the third and then we give up
- 23:38Speaker 2: give up the touchdown like we you can't give up
- 23:40Speaker 2: that touchdown man it wasn't a bad play call by
- 23:44Speaker 2: by t white it's just man on man for man
- 23:47Speaker 2: make a make a damn play and this is supposed
- 23:49Speaker 2: to be our best defensive back right this is a
- 23:51Speaker 2: guy that we fought for to come back via the
- 23:53Speaker 2: portal into the transfer portal we fought for him to
- 23:55Speaker 2: come back paid him a decent amount of money was
- 23:57Speaker 2: supposed to be The guy this year for FSU, a
- 24:00Speaker 2: highly rated defensive back, a high draft pick. This is
- 24:03Speaker 2: supposed to be the guy that's supposed to carry the
- 24:05Speaker 2: DBU mantra going into this year, but he's been a
- 24:08Speaker 2: huge disappointment, man. I don't know what, and I'm not
- 24:10Speaker 2: sure what it is. Is it the hype coming in
- 24:12Speaker 2: from last year to this year?
- 24:16Speaker 1: Just another thing, too.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Maybe it's the, not necessarily addition, but the subtraction, so
- 24:24Speaker 2: to speak, with the firing of Patrick Sertan.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Could this be an issue?
- 24:30Speaker 2: These defensive backs look completely different from what they did
- 24:32Speaker 2: last year under Pat and Tony White to how they
- 24:37Speaker 2: look now under Blue Adams, the current cornerback coach.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Could that be the issue?
- 24:43Speaker 2: I know for a fact Pat Sertan understood situational football, right?
- 24:48Speaker 1: He understood what route combinations you'd be getting.
- 24:50Speaker 2: On certain downers, third and five, third and six. He
- 24:53Speaker 2: understood sticks. He understood playing the sticks. Situational football, Pat
- 24:58Speaker 2: Sertan understood. Man covers just that third pass or 10.
- 25:04Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Maybe that's something to keep an eye on because our
- 25:07Speaker 2: defensive backs last year looked nothing like how they looked
- 25:10Speaker 2: this year. We did give up a lot of plays
- 25:12Speaker 2: through the pass game last year as well, too. Last
- 25:15Speaker 2: year was more so just guys wasn't running completely wide
- 25:22Speaker 2: open last year. A lot of this misplay. For instance,
- 25:26Speaker 2: we look at The explosive plays Miami had against us
- 25:28Speaker 2: last year with Malachi, Tony, and I think it was
- 25:32Speaker 2: another receiver, can't forget. But the coverage wasn't bad. We
- 25:35Speaker 2: just missed plays on the coverage. We, in that type
- 25:37Speaker 2: of deal, didn't make the tackle. It wasn't a situation
- 25:40Speaker 2: where it's third and five and we're nine yards off
- 25:42Speaker 2: from backpelling and just letting Tony get the first down
- 25:46Speaker 2: wide open, that type of deal. It wasn't that situation. So,
- 25:48Speaker 2: I don't know, maybe that's something to keep an eye
- 25:50Speaker 2: on as well. The firing of Pat Sartain and the
- 25:53Speaker 2: hiring of Lou Adams, I don't know, but Jabir Rawls
- 25:56Speaker 2: looks like a completely different player under this defensive back
- 26:00Speaker 2: coach versus the previous defensive back coach. He looked like
- 26:03Speaker 2: a guy that could be a high draft pick and
- 26:05Speaker 2: carry on that DBU mantra. Now, with the inconsistencies that
- 26:09Speaker 2: we've been showing, the wild part about it, he shows
- 26:12Speaker 2: flashes that he could do it. The sack that he
- 26:14Speaker 2: had on the quarterback. He shows flashes. We just have
- 26:18Speaker 2: to be consistent. If you want to be a high
- 26:20Speaker 2: draft pick, you want to be consistent. This, that, and
- 26:24Speaker 2: the third as far as NFL, man. Consistency is key.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Making plays over and over consistently, that's going to get
- 26:30Speaker 2: you drafted. Not a few splash plays and then you
- 26:33Speaker 2: get killed on the remaining games.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Consistently.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Showing good tape consistently. And that's something we haven't done.
- 26:39Speaker 2: That's something we haven't done at all specifically with Jabril Rawls, man.
- 26:42Speaker 2: It just wasn't good. Darryl and Mandrell. Are you guys
- 26:48Speaker 2: going to show up? You guys had one tackle apiece.
- 26:53Speaker 2: I forget which one it was, but I think it
- 26:55Speaker 2: was Mandrell after he was doing, you know, and one
- 27:00Speaker 2: mixtape stuff against SMU and that went viral. That played
- 27:04Speaker 2: on viral. I think he went on social media, Instagram,
- 27:08Speaker 2: posted a note or something, stay on that side or whatever. Like, bro,
- 27:12Speaker 2: stay on that side. You forget you was the guy
- 27:18Speaker 2: that entered the transfer portal and threatened to transfer over bread, right?
- 27:24Speaker 2: Let's call a spade a spade. I'm not saying you're
- 27:27Speaker 2: right or wrong for that. You had a good freshman
- 27:30Speaker 2: year just that in third, but you went into the
- 27:32Speaker 2: transfer portal, won a new bread. FSU gave you the
- 27:36Speaker 2: new money. You got to produce, man. This ain't the
- 27:43Speaker 2: days where you just getting room and damn board.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Nah, bro. You can't pay big damn money. Your salary
- 27:50Speaker 1: is bigger than 90% of the FSU fan base.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Probably 95% of the FSU fan base, you're making more
- 27:58Speaker 2: money than. You're not playing great. Be accountable and take
- 28:02Speaker 2: accountability for it. You lashing out the fans because they're
- 28:05Speaker 2: telling the truth. And then you go out of Bama
- 28:08Speaker 2: and do the same damn thing.
- 28:09Speaker 1: So, again, we got to get some return on the investment.
- 28:12Speaker 1: You guys got to lock in.
- 28:13Speaker 2: And so far, we haven't gotten a return on the
- 28:15Speaker 2: investment at all. Don't want to be all negative on defense.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Chris Jones, oh, you a dog, boy.
- 28:23Speaker 1: You one of the ones. You fit in.
- 28:25Speaker 2: You look like one of them guys that could have
- 28:26Speaker 2: played within any era of FSU in the past. That
- 28:30Speaker 2: was respectable. That played how FSU should be played. You
- 28:36Speaker 2: look like one of those guys.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Respect, man. He was all over the field. Dog.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Love what you bring to the table. Great portal addition.
- 28:43Speaker 2: I said all season, I feel like he was probably
- 28:45Speaker 2: the most important portal addition. I think he's kind of
- 28:48Speaker 2: shown that with our issues with that linebacker in the past.
- 28:52Speaker 2: And again, shout out to Ernie Sims as well, too.
- 28:54Speaker 2: Got to give him another shout-out. One of the best
- 28:56Speaker 2: coaches on staff. I really feel like that room has
- 28:58Speaker 2: done a complete 180 from a play standpoint, energy standpoint,
- 29:02Speaker 2: attitude standpoint from last year to this year. Going from
- 29:05Speaker 2: John Patuas to Ernie Sims being 90 days. So, shout-out
- 29:09Speaker 2: to Ernie.
- 29:09Speaker 1: C.J.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Richards, the safety, the FCS transfer, I think it's from
- 29:13Speaker 2: Illinois State. He played pretty good ball as well, too.
- 29:16Speaker 2: This is my last thing I want to do as
- 29:18Speaker 2: far as the defense wrapping it up.
- 29:21Speaker 1: If you give up 50 points at Florida State, Your
- 29:23Speaker 1: ass shit walk on. Simple as that.
- 29:27Speaker 2: If Florida State is giving 50 points in a game,
- 29:30Speaker 2: that game, after that game, you should figure out your
- 29:33Speaker 2: own way home. Catch a bus from Tuscaloosa to Tallahassee.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Think about what the fuck happened there. Whatever.
- 29:40Speaker 1: It may be, man.
- 29:41Speaker 2: If you give a 50 at Florida State, man, you
- 29:44Speaker 2: should be walking home.
