Transcript
- 0:15Jon: I liked it a lot.
- 0:16It's a movie that I'm gonna be thinking about a lot too.
- 0:20Kearns: the people need to know is that we're talking about weapons, and this is
- 0:24a special episode that's coming out, so we have a double this week for you guys.
- 0:31Ryan: Well, you are excited you're watching it,
- 0:33Jon: Yep.
- 0:34Ryan: But I feel like it's, because you think about it, it's
- 0:37very, it's like hereditary was more of a drama than a whore.
- 0:44Like I feel like weapons is more of a drama with horror elements thrown into it
- 0:50Kearns: I am
- 0:50Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 0:51Kearns: the only connection you made to hereditary,
- 0:54Ryan: that I'm not
- 0:55Kearns: to be honest with you.
- 0:57I was like, where is he going with this?
- 0:59Ryan: it with it.
- 1:00There's no.
- 1:03Kearns: This one though, we will, we will load up in the beginning.
- 1:06this will be spoiler heavy, as in we're going to spoil the shit outta this movie.
- 1:10So if you have not seen weapons yet, please keep listening.
- 1:14We really need the views and, um, ruin it for yourself.
- 1:18Ryan: Have fun.
- 1:18Jon: Pause us.
- 1:19Go watch weapons, come back.
- 1:22Kearns: up buying it because I was just, I couldn't wait for it any longer.
- 1:25And, but I think it's, um, isn't it?
- 1:27it's not free on any streaming platform at
- 1:31Jon: No, no,
- 1:32Kearns: Okay.
- 1:33Jon: no.
- 1:33I'm gonna end up buying it physically also.
- 1:36Mm-hmm.
- 1:37Ryan: it's, it's good.
- 1:38Kearns: It was worth the purchase.
- 1:39I'm happy I have it forever.
- 1:44Jon: And I, I will say this, one of the things, one of the ideas I had
- 1:49coming in was that there was a strong barbarian connection and it's, it's
- 1:56a common actor, but it's not like a super strong, you don't have to
- 2:01watch barbarian to enjoy weapons.
- 2:03Ryan: more in camera style as well as him,
- 2:07Jon: Yeah.
- 2:09Ryan: going deeper into the idea of having more characters in his film.
- 2:14'cause in Barbarian, he like focuses on the two characters.
- 2:18We do a few flashbacks, actually three characters.
- 2:21And then in this one he's
- 2:23Jon: Yeah,
- 2:24Ryan: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, I believe you got Justine, you got, um,
- 2:31Josh Brolin, you got the Archer.
- 2:35I know, I,
- 2:36Kearns: It's like the,
- 2:37Ryan: I can't forget that name.
- 2:38That's
- 2:38Kearns: you have Paul
- 2:41Jon: Paul
- 2:43Ryan: James.
- 2:43There we go.
- 2:43I
- 2:44Jon: James,
- 2:45Kearns: They don't do a Gladys,
- 2:46Jon: you get,
- 2:47Ryan: No, they don't.
- 2:48Jon: you get Alex, but I mean, she doesn't get a chapter, but
- 2:52she's a pretty significant person.
- 2:56Kearns: some decent star power Before we segue into it, I mean, Benedict
- 3:00Wong is, is in this, and I don't think he gets mentioned enough.
- 3:04I love him.
- 3:04Ryan: phenomenal.
- 3:05Kearns: I, Amy Madigan is also in this, obviously Josh Brolin
- 3:09is like, why I bought the movie.
- 3:11just gonna say it.
- 3:12But these are like, these are decent actors and Julia Garner's,
- 3:16she hasn't let me down yet either.
- 3:17I, I like her a lot as well for what is seemingly a newcomer ish.
- 3:22Ryan: did a good job and she played the
- 3:25Kearns: Yeah.
- 3:25Ryan: and just being frantic and afraid for a reason, but having
- 3:30a goal not forgetting that goal.
- 3:33During these times of horror, I can say, I mean, she, she went
- 3:40Kearns: Yeah, it's horrific times.
- 3:42Ryan: she went through
- 3:43Kearns: It's horrific times.
- 3:44Ryan: her car vandalized.
- 3:45I, I wanna get into it.
- 3:47We'll get
- 3:47Kearns: He's a witch.
- 3:48Oh no.
- 3:58Ryan: we lost a,
- 3:59Kearns: Did he leave on purpose?
- 4:00Ryan: I hope not.
- 4:05John, come back.
- 4:06Kearns: There he is.
- 4:07You know John, my dad did that once.
- 4:10Ryan: John came back though.
- 4:13Kearns: Oh, well done.
- 4:16right, so we had some technical difficulty.
- 4:18Jon: very, a very guilty looking cat behind the tv.
- 4:23Kearns: I was gonna say, hmm.
- 4:25Probably one of the cats.
- 4:26All right.
- 4:27We're back in business.
- 4:28Everybody.
- 4:29So we, I dunno where we were, but we were there.
- 4:31All right.
- 4:33Ryan: yeah, no, uh,
- 4:33Jon: were there.
- 4:34Ryan: the character Justine goes through some horrific things, but like I was
- 4:38saying, we're going to get to that.
- 4:40But I know you got a game for us.
- 4:43I'm ready.
- 4:44I,
- 4:44Kearns: Do you want to play a game?
- 4:46Jon: I have a game for you.
- 4:48Do you wanna play a game?
- 4:49Kearns: think, uh, coming up we're gonna be doing saw.
- 4:51Ryan: yeah, we are.
- 4:53Kearns: Yeah.
- 4:53And that episode's coming out soon.
- 4:54Everybody.
- 4:56Jon: I
- 4:57Ryan: No John Puppet though.
- 4:59I wish.
- 5:03Jon: I have a blind rank for you guys.
- 5:04Kearns: Yeah.
- 5:05Ryan: Is it a five
- 5:07Kearns: Oh, we sharing the screen, everybody?
- 5:09Ryan: Oh
- 5:11Jon: Yep.
- 5:11You
- 5:12Kearns: I see it.
- 5:13All right, buddy.
- 5:14Ryan: revenge
- 5:15Kearns: I'm trying to look to see if you have any risque tabs.
- 5:18Opener.
- 5:18Jon: It is not.
- 5:20It is not.
- 5:21I made sure all the Risa tabs were closed.
- 5:23Thank you very much.
- 5:25You'll not see my dirty, dirty underside
- 5:32Kearns: Yucky.
- 5:33Jon: unless you ask nicely.
- 5:34All right, so it's a blind rank.
- 5:36It is not
- 5:37Ryan: I tried.
- 5:38Jon: movies.
- 5:39Movie number one is Sweet
- 5:42Ryan: This is a good slasher too.
- 5:46Jon: That's a very good slasher with a very
- 5:48Ryan: Yeah, I'm gonna put that number two.
- 5:51Kearns: Damnit.
- 5:51I was gonna do the same thing just for Brooke Shields.
- 5:54You know what though?
- 5:54Because I, I don't wanna be just like Ryan, I'm putting it at number three.
- 5:57Ryan: Oh.
- 5:58Kearns: It's so there.
- 5:59So there,
- 6:00Ryan: a tra
- 6:00Kearns: there better be two movies that are better than this on this rank.
- 6:03God dammit.
- 6:04Ryan: travesty.
- 6:05Jon: You're going
- 6:05Kearns: I'm going three.
- 6:07Jon: is that
- 6:08Kearns: Brooke Shields is hot.
- 6:09Ryan: This is young Brooke
- 6:10Kearns: I'll say it.
- 6:11I'll say it in public.
- 6:12I'll say it on the podcast.
- 6:14She's talented and she's hot.
- 6:16Ryan: Drama got fired from that soap opera.
- 6:19Kearns: That was such a good episode of Freaking Entourage.
- 6:22Oh my God.
- 6:23I was like, I would do it too.
- 6:24Drama.
- 6:25Ryan: it was, it wasn't a soap opera.
- 6:26It was a, uh, made for TV movie
- 6:29Kearns: Yeah.
- 6:30Ryan: and I playing your, uh, husband.
- 6:31No, you're playing my brother.
- 6:33Oh,
- 6:37Jon: yep.
- 6:38Alright, ready?
- 6:39Ready for the next movie?
- 6:40Kearns: Yes.
- 6:42Jon: Movie number two.
- 6:43Ryan: Killer children.
- 6:45Kearns: I love this movie.
- 6:46Jon: of the
- 6:49Kearns: Killer Children.
- 6:49No.
- 6:50Jon: I'm not giving you credit for children for, you
- 6:54have to give me the exact.
- 6:58Exact theme, not
- 7:00Ryan: the
- 7:00Kearns: Zest Killers.
- 7:05Damned Killers.
- 7:06Number two for me, by the way.
- 7:08I,
- 7:08Ryan: uh
- 7:10Jon: Number two.
- 7:11Ryan: hmm.
- 7:12This is the, is this, this is the remake, right?
- 7:15Jon: Yes.
- 7:16This is the John Carpenter
- 7:17Ryan: I am gonna put that,
- 7:18Kearns: this is the one I saw.
- 7:19Ryan: put that three.
- 7:21I saw the original one as a young lad.
- 7:24on IFC one Morning
- 7:28Kearns: Possessed.
- 7:30Hypnotized killers.
- 7:32Hypnotized killers.
- 7:34Jon: It
- 7:35Kearns: God.
- 7:35Jon: it is children, but it's a specific, I
- 7:38Ryan: Children of the Corn.
- 7:40Jon: thought.
- 7:41Ryan: No, I'm, oh
- 7:44Kearns: Uh, that's number one.
- 7:45That's number one.
- 7:46Ryan: number one with that too.
- 7:49that
- 7:49Kearns: Um,
- 7:50Jon: You,
- 7:51Kearns: cult driven children.
- 7:53Jon: live.
- 7:54Kearns: Yeah.
- 7:54I might,
- 7:55Jon: Uh, no.
- 7:56You may both live to regret that
- 7:58Kearns: I doubt it.
- 7:59Jon: here comes movie number four.
- 8:02Ryan: Oh, that's a good film too.
- 8:04Kearns: Better watch out.
- 8:05Good.
- 8:06I'm not cry.
- 8:07Ryan: a good film.
- 8:07Kearns: I'm putting that at five because I got a feeling you got a freaking hum
- 8:10dinger sitting there in the last slot, and I don't mind that being at five,
- 8:15given what we've got out there so far.
- 8:17Ryan: that at four.
- 8:19hmm.
- 8:20Kearns: That leaves five.
- 8:21That leaves your last slot hanging.
- 8:24That's a dangerous move.
- 8:25Or dangerous man.
- 8:27Jon: Neither of you are, I think neither of you will be happy
- 8:30where this last movie wound up
- 8:32Ryan: Stephen King.
- 8:35Kearns: Oh
- 8:35Ryan: Oh,
- 8:38Kearns: well.
- 8:38Better than five.
- 8:40That's gotta count for something.
- 8:42Ryan: is worse than the
- 8:43Kearns: Dam me on.
- 8:44So devil possessed children.
- 8:49Jon: both.
- 8:50Kearns: come on.
- 8:50Demonic.
- 8:51Demonic possessed children.
- 8:53Ryan: possess children with a grudge.
- 8:57Jon: No, it's just creepy kids, guys.
- 9:00You
- 9:00Kearns: You suck.
- 9:02Jon: It's
- 9:03Kearns: creepy kids.
- 9:04That was a good one.
- 9:05Ryan: good.
- 9:06Ah, man, I, I, yeah, you know what?
- 9:09I would put the omen at one and move everything down.
- 9:14Kearns: Yeah, that'd probably be what I would do.
- 9:17Jon: I'm starting to learn how to order them so that we can
- 9:20Kearns: Yeah, I mean it was pretty easy in the beginning 'cause I thought you were
- 9:23doing something like that and I was like, no, he is just throwing 'em out there.
- 9:27All right.
- 9:28All right.
- 9:28Damn it John.
- 9:29So Weapons is a movie that, revolves around the concept of a bunch of
- 9:33children having been not abducted, but they go missing and they run off on
- 9:39their own, which gives the movie a nice twist right up front, like, oh wow.
- 9:43Ryan: it funny how they run.
- 9:45There's just like a missile.
- 9:46Kearns: Yeah.
- 9:46The Naruto run.
- 9:47Jon: Yeah, they all run in the same way.
- 9:50Kearns: The Naruto run and we should put that up on the screen share.
- 9:53We know what that is.
- 9:54The guy did that during the, occupy area 51 thing.
- 9:59He naruto ran pads in the background.
- 10:02It was pretty funny.
- 10:03That was good times.
- 10:05But they, it immediately, ups the creep factor because this
- 10:08woman's entire class goes missing.
- 10:11This poor teacher's entire class goes missing, and she's Justine,
- 10:15and, um, there's one kid left.
- 10:17Ryan: at 2:17 AM in the morning.
- 10:21Kearns: Yep, that's a good point.
- 10:222:17 AM They all got up out of their beds and left the house and
- 10:27disappeared, and so that's creepy.
- 10:30Now, one thing I don't like that movies do is when they lean on the
- 10:34whole kid angle to like, just be lazy, because everybody's like, oh,
- 10:38it's like, killing a dog in a movie.
- 10:39Same thing when you lean on the kid thing and you're like to tug at heartstrings.
- 10:43Weapons doesn't just get a pass.
- 10:45It just doesn't do that.
- 10:46there's a deeper meaning in this movie, and I'm really glad we're
- 10:49doing this episode because that's what I wanna talk about a lot more.
- 10:53But
- 10:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:54Kearns: at the very least, when they leave, like they're just gone,
- 10:57they're missing from the film.
- 10:59Jon: Yep.
- 10:59Ryan: Yep.
- 11:00Jon: Yeah, for about two thirds to three quarters of the film,
- 11:05you don't know where they are.
- 11:06Ryan: Nope.
- 11:07Kearns: Yeah.
- 11:07Which is kind of cool.
- 11:08And then, it just hyper focuses on the town and the mob mentality.
- 11:13That's sort of like developing there because people are naturally flipping
- 11:17out because the kids are missing
- 11:21and then they're trying to blame someone.
- 11:22And who do you think they're gonna blame?
- 11:25Ryan: of course, the teacher.
- 11:27Kearns: Common factor.
- 11:28Jon: Yeah.
- 11:28Because anything that happens at two 17 in the morning has to be
- 11:33Ryan: Of course.
- 11:34Kearns: Right.
- 11:34Ryan: a track record though.
- 11:35All right.
- 11:36A according to Archer, she's got a DUI and she had a affair
- 11:43in one of the school buildings.
- 11:44But don't worry, it wasn't a kid.
- 11:46It wasn't a kid.
- 11:47According
- 11:47Kearns: she's a little slutty and she likes to get her drink on.
- 11:50Ryan: does.
- 11:51Kearns: And she's probably a great teacher.
- 11:53Jon: a drinking problem.
- 11:54She likes
- 11:55Kearns: Yeah.
- 11:55She likes red.
- 11:56So
- 11:57Jon: Yeah.
- 11:58A lot of,
- 11:58Kearns: burner.
- 11:59Jon: of the most fun women in life like
- 12:01Ryan: Uh, Mar
- 12:01Jon: and
- 12:01Kearns: That's true.
- 12:02That's true.
- 12:04Ryan: Married
- 12:04Kearns: That's true.
- 12:07Jon: Married men.
- 12:07Yeah.
- 12:08Or or otherwise taken.
- 12:13to be fair to Justine, Paul
- 12:15Ryan: Yeah, he did.
- 12:15Jon: to
- 12:16Kearns: and how did he do that?
- 12:17Jon: He told her he was not
- 12:19Kearns: Oh.
- 12:19Ryan: He did.
- 12:20Jon: woman.
- 12:20Ryan: He did.
- 12:21Jon: the
- 12:21Kearns: That's true.
- 12:22That's true.
- 12:23So we get further on in the story.
- 12:25the, so Josh Brolin's character Archer, I think is his name, he gets, real uppity
- 12:29about her because, and to their credit, these people are panicked and manic
- 12:34and they're, just grasping at straws.
- 12:36Their kids are missing.
- 12:37They're, you're o obviously gonna be flipping out.
- 12:39They're going for the only commonality.
- 12:41Why would it be everybody in this one class?
- 12:43So it is, and it's compelling stuff.
- 12:45It keeps you into the movie.
- 12:46You're like, yeah, you're kind of like, you're really drawn to it.
- 12:50And, we see Justine's coping mechanism is to drink her face off,
- 12:54which, you know, she's a vodka gal.
- 12:58Jon: Probably her general coping mechanism, regardless of whether
- 13:02Ryan: yep.
- 13:02Jon: kids
- 13:02Kearns: that's a good point.
- 13:03Do you notice she makes the, the white girl cocktail, by the way?
- 13:07Vodka soda with lime or just vodka with lime.
- 13:10But I think it was vodka soda with lime, which is my favorite.
- 13:13I was like, oh, skinny white bitch is what they call that at the bar.
- 13:16Ryan: Little spritz.
- 13:17Kearns: What you call that at the bar?
- 13:18Ryan: spritz
- 13:19Kearns: is pretty funny.
- 13:20Jon: Yeah.
- 13:22Set.
- 13:24I have a couple reviews for
- 13:25Ryan: I'm down.
- 13:26Kearns: God.
- 13:26I can't even imagine what these are gonna be like.
- 13:28Okay.
- 13:29Ryan: a lot more one star
- 13:31Jon: right,
- 13:31Ryan: than five star.
- 13:33Kearns: There's,
- 13:34Jon: there are were a lot.
- 13:36It, it was hard to parse through some of these reviews because
- 13:40is one of those movies that everybody thinks they're a film
- 13:43Kearns: uh,
- 13:44Jon: so they're writing epic reviews of this movie a lot of 'em miss the point.
- 13:51Both the good and the bad ones seem to miss a lot of the point.
- 13:56Kearns: at least what we perceive to be the point.
- 13:58Jon: I just watched that movie.
- 13:59It's outstanding.
- 14:01Amazing.
- 14:01One of the best stories I've ever seen.
- 14:04Great movies or type me a great review for that particular movie.
- 14:08Acting specially story at the script.
- 14:11Make it look like a human.
- 14:13Gets short.
- 14:14make it look like a charity or ai.
- 14:17Kearns: For the love of God.
- 14:18All right, well, I agree with that though.
- 14:19No charity or AI in this, but what are we doing here?
- 14:24Jon: what they
- 14:24Kearns: Grammarly?
- 14:25Yeah, do something.
- 14:27Jon: Yes,
- 14:27Kearns: that through the
- 14:28Jon: we,
- 14:29Kearns: GPT.
- 14:29Jon: we start to make sense now.
- 14:31Just finished watching weapons honestly, it blew me away.
- 14:36The story is gripping from start to finish.
- 14:39The kind of mystery that keeps you leaning forward the whole time.
- 14:43The script is sharp and layered, making every reveal hit even harder.
- 14:49really stood out to me was how human and real the characters felt.
- 14:53actors brought so much intensity and depth that it stays with you long after.
- 14:59This isn't just another horror film.
- 15:02It's one of those rare movies where the writing and performances
- 15:06come together perfectly easily.
- 15:09One of the best films I've seen in years.
- 15:12Would you like me to also make a super short one-liner review
- 15:15you could use for social media?
- 15:18Kearns: Oh, wow.
- 15:19Wow.
- 15:21So that everybody, if you're not familiar, is chat GBT.
- 15:27That's the end of the.
- 15:31Jon: after that first chunk of writing here, chat, GPT was
- 15:36Ryan: Oh yeah.
- 15:37Kearns: Yeah,
- 15:38Ryan: I was like, this is
- 15:39Jon: 'cause that initial word salad was,
- 15:42Ryan: well ridden.
- 15:43Kearns: pretty bad.
- 15:45Pretty bad.
- 15:45And I said you should probably run that through chat GPT.
- 15:48You should also pay attention to what you're copying and pasting.
- 15:52Geez, that was rough.
- 15:54Ryan: Uh, I got no response on that one.
- 15:56That was, yeah.
- 15:58Jon: yeah.
- 16:00So here's your one star.
- 16:02My husband, older son, and I went to watch this in theater today.
- 16:08I don't typically relieve reviews, but this one warranted one because it was odd.
- 16:15The movie was definitely more comedic than horror.
- 16:19I'm not entirely sure what I just watched.
- 16:22I love horror films.
- 16:24I grew up with horror movies such as the Blair Witch Project and The Ring.
- 16:28Kearns: Interesting choice.
- 16:29Jon: Maybe they're run, maybe they're running out of things
- 16:33to make horror movies about, because this was a confusing one.
- 16:36You leave asking, what did I just watch?
- 16:40It had moments that would qualify as horror because of the jump scares.
- 16:45But far from an actual horror movie, I can say I'm glad we watched it
- 16:50for The Good Laugh as a family.
- 16:52My husband is still trying to make sense of it.
- 16:55An hour after LOL.
- 16:57Kearns: Walt.
- 16:58Walt.
- 16:58Walt.
- 16:59But yeah, so, okay.
- 17:01Some people are dumb and that's, that's okay.
- 17:04That's allowed.
- 17:06But I'm glad that she was kind of fair about it, to be honest with you.
- 17:09Ryan: I,
- 17:10Kearns: Um,
- 17:11Ryan: where she laughed at.
- 17:12I mean, the shock
- 17:14Kearns: pretty linear.
- 17:15Jon: there were a couple parts at the end I laughed at,
- 17:17like, the visuals of the kids
- 17:19Kearns: Yeah, it was pretty funny.
- 17:20Jon: pretty
- 17:21Kearns: The, also the,
- 17:22Jon: like,
- 17:22Kearns: the, uh, Gladys cameos when she's just popping up at places
- 17:26like waving and things like that.
- 17:27That's also bizarre.
- 17:29Ryan: scared the,
- 17:29Kearns: That, oh, that was scary.
- 17:31Ryan: the shit
- 17:31Kearns: I laughed.
- 17:32I laughed at those.
- 17:33Like when she was on the roof or on the ceiling in Justine's
- 17:36place, I was like, Jesus Christ.
- 17:38Jon: I think what made me laugh the most consistently throughout
- 17:41this movie is how after the kids go missing, every other weird thing
- 17:46that happens is just like mess.
- 17:48So this happens in the town.
- 17:49People don't
- 17:50Kearns: Yeah,
- 17:51Jon: They don't react to Marcus Naruto running
- 17:53Kearns: yeah.
- 17:54Well, they, they're like, Jesus, like, what's up with that guy?
- 17:57And stuff like that.
- 17:58It's just running through.
- 17:59Jon: they, don't really react when a stampede of kids
- 18:04tear through their houses.
- 18:05They're just like, Hey, you're tearing up my
- 18:08Kearns: A lot of people would just jump up from the couch and be like, what the hell?
- 18:11And then the kids are gone.
- 18:12By that point, the kids were moving.
- 18:15I guess so people have seen the movies if they're still listening.
- 18:18So you're, you know what we're talking about.
- 18:21I keep thinking we have to like explain the whole movie, but the
- 18:23idea is you've already watched it.
- 18:24So,
- 18:25Ryan: Definitely watch it or watch us watch the movie, watch
- 18:29us again, like, and subscribe.
- 18:30Kearns: so what was your feeling on the multiple, multiple perspective angle?
- 18:35'cause I know reviewers and people who watch the movie are split kind
- 18:38of right down the middle on this.
- 18:40Some find it to be incredibly lazy and some find it to be a
- 18:43welcome, way to make the film.
- 18:46And some people think it's pandering to Gen Z, which they're, they're,
- 18:51I mean, you can pander to 'em.
- 18:53They're out there, they got money.
- 18:55Ryan: very pandering.
- 18:57Jon: Yeah.
- 18:57I mean,
- 18:58Kearns: You do think it's pandering.
- 18:59He's in the piece of pandering.
- 19:01Jon: I didn't think so.
- 19:02I, liked it.
- 19:03I liked that, concept with this movie, because the way they're
- 19:08telling the story, not everybody's gonna know all that information.
- 19:13Like, Marcus shows up at a gas station laser focused on killing Justine.
- 19:19But like, you don't know how that, how he got
- 19:21Kearns: Yeah.
- 19:22Jon: You don't like, they use it like, it's not frivolous.
- 19:27They're using it to expand on stories.
- 19:30Even like the James angle, the James chapter is, he reveals
- 19:35a lot once you get through him being just a methed out psycho.
- 19:40Kearns: he eats it bad too.
- 19:41Ryan: yeah, it
- 19:42Kearns: funny how they finally like Archer throwing James 18 times.
- 19:45That was funny too.
- 19:47It just keeps getting up.
- 19:48That was, that was comedy.
- 19:50the Barbarian connection.
- 19:51We can talk about if we want to dive a little further into the theme
- 19:55or what we perceive the theme to be because, Gary is in Barbarian.
- 19:59He's the owner of the house that is, being rented out for an Airbnb in Barbarian.
- 20:06He's also mired down in controversy for sexual harassment.
- 20:09he's getting me toed in Barbarian, but in this movie, when we meet Gary, he's
- 20:13one of the parents of the Missing Kids,
- 20:16Ryan: Yep.
- 20:17Kearns: which is interesting.
- 20:18Jon: the first one to cooperate with archer's self
- 20:21Kearns: He's pretty into it.
- 20:22Jon: or independent
- 20:23Kearns: Like he's pretty, yeah, he's way more helpful on
- 20:25this than he was in Barbarian.
- 20:27Ryan: Very much so.
- 20:29Kearns: to make the connection to me makes it so that I feel like, they're telling
- 20:34you or, the director's telling you at the very least, like there's not just, it's a
- 20:38spiritual connection, but it's also this movie's deeper than face value as well.
- 20:44That's kind of my thing.
- 20:45And I, so I was connected to Barbarian.
- 20:46I went All right, barbarian.
- 20:48We did an episode on already, we talked about how it was really
- 20:51heavy, about, a metaphor for trauma and sexual assault and all of these
- 20:57things, and empowerment as well.
- 20:59And I thought that that's something Barbarian did very well.
- 21:02Ryan: well.
- 21:02Yes.
- 21:02Kearns: This movie's gotta have layers too.
- 21:05What do you guys think?
- 21:06Ryan: Oh yeah.
- 21:07Jon: yeah.
- 21:08definitely.
- 21:09think so.
- 21:09I found a one star review that sort of goes into, I think a lot
- 21:13of what we wanted to talk about.
- 21:14Kearns: Sure.
- 21:16Jon: So I'm gonna skip like most of the meat of it because it's a
- 21:20Kearns: I hate meat.
- 21:21Jon: long review.
- 21:22That includes, um, save your money on tickets and snacks and treat yourself
- 21:27to something actually enjoyable instead.
- 21:30But he does, he asks, gets to a lot of the questions that I've seen in other reviews
- 21:37and other people who have watched it.
- 21:40I kind of wanted to look at some of the things that he wondered about because
- 21:44I think it resolves some of the issues
- 21:46Ryan: Okay.
- 21:46Jon: had.
- 21:46so one of the things he's confused by is how are they seeing the
- 21:50clown ant if the whole thing is supposed to be based on voodoo,
- 21:55Kearns: I mean,
- 21:55Jon: which is
- 21:56Kearns: oh, right.
- 21:58Jon: voodoo.
- 21:59Kearns: the voodoo hoodoo aspect.
- 22:01People should know what oo is too, you know about voodoo, look up hoodoo.
- 22:04But the hoodoo voodoo aspect of this is very stark.
- 22:09They, pose her as a witch, in a lot of ways, but this is very v voodoo
- 22:14revolves or there's a lot in voodoo that has to do with zombie flying
- 22:18people, control and things like that.
- 22:22It's very big.
- 22:23Ryan: in the rainbow.
- 22:25Kearns: So I'm glad he brought, yep.
- 22:26I'm glad he brought that out because that's, this movie.
- 22:30He's making weapons out of people.
- 22:34Jon: Yeah.
- 22:35he asks, why did she kidnap these kids?
- 22:38The reasoning quote to make her feel better was never explained,
- 22:42but it didn't feel like it needed
- 22:44Kearns: He was very intuitive.
- 22:45Ryan: it.
- 22:46Kearns: It was very intuitive.
- 22:47Jon: you either got
- 22:48Kearns: Well, she says it when she's talking to Alex about his mom and dad.
- 22:51They didn't make me feel better,
- 22:53Jon: with a
- 22:54Ryan: Yep.
- 22:54Jon: She didn't make her feel, they didn't make her
- 22:56Kearns: even says that to him.
- 22:58Jon: she.
- 22:59Yeah.
- 22:59It's, it seems pretty apparent that it's a, a, a life force kind of thing.
- 23:05A, a life,
- 23:06Kearns: Yeah.
- 23:07Jon: know, the younger
- 23:08Ryan: And.
- 23:08Jon: are more
- 23:09Kearns: Plus you chuckle.
- 23:09Fuck, you just explained it to everybody, so obviously you got it.
- 23:15Yeah,
- 23:15Jon: it.
- 23:15You just didn't like it.
- 23:17Ryan: He to go into deeper.
- 23:19I mean, it goes back to the old, like tales, like the fairytales,
- 23:23the witch taking the kids, he the kids, the power of the energy.
- 23:27So like he,
- 23:29Kearns: a good point.
- 23:30Ryan: like the old stuff.
- 23:31Maybe he wants something new, but guess what?
- 23:34You get all the old stuff and you rebrand
- 23:37Kearns: a reason.
- 23:38Yeah, I was gonna say, there's a reason we keep retelling the same stories because
- 23:42they're very, they're in our DNA Hansel and Gretel and stuff like that, which
- 23:46is what you were getting at Bobby Yaga.
- 23:49Those are all very in our DNA for a reason
- 23:52Jon: Yeah.
- 23:53Yeah, I mean, I think some of this also speaks to, we have a lot of people
- 23:59who need to be spoonfed things now and like, if you need spoonfeeding this,
- 24:04Ryan: I.
- 24:05Jon: struggle here.
- 24:06Kearns: I.
- 24:06Jon: they're not, they're leaving some of this up to
- 24:09Ryan: And that's why I think real quick, that's why there's
- 24:11like a lot of those fast cuts.
- 24:13It goes like not fast cuts, but it goes back from characters.
- 24:16It's like when we watch Pulp Fiction for the first time,
- 24:19there's a lot of shit going on and you have to have that attention.
- 24:23I feel like with weapons you have to have that attention, but I feel
- 24:27like it's so smooth and that's why it can relate to like the Gen Zs,
- 24:32'cause it's like a two hour film.
- 24:35can't make it past certain scenes and a lot of these scenes are quick.
- 24:39So it allows them to gain that attention and to watch actually
- 24:44a two hour film that is more than SpongeBob Squarepants, I'm just saying.
- 24:51Kearns: Not a TikTok reel.
- 24:52Yeah.
- 24:52Jon: which sort of gets to another, question that I've definitely seen too
- 24:56is why bother with all the flashbacks if they end up going nowhere?
- 25:01Ryan: they do.
- 25:02Jon: they do, they fill in parts of
- 25:06Kearns: Yeah,
- 25:07Jon: that you can't tell from
- 25:09Kearns: and there's also, there's character building that's important here.
- 25:12Archer goes through a character arc of being a dick in the beginning
- 25:16to com almost completely, actually, completely redeem, redeeming himself.
- 25:21Sorry.
- 25:21It's also funny that he's the father of the bully, by the way.
- 25:24Ryan: Well,
- 25:25Kearns: Now it's like, oh, that's who Matthew is.
- 25:27That sucks.
- 25:28Ryan: actually an interesting theory about Archer at the end.
- 25:32You
- 25:32Kearns: What is it?
- 25:33Ryan: redeems it all himself.
- 25:34They say when you watch it, he doesn't snap out of it.
- 25:38Kearns: No, he does.
- 25:38Ryan: uh,
- 25:39Kearns: He stops.
- 25:40He stops killing her.
- 25:41Jon: does because,
- 25:42Kearns: Yeah, he stops killing her.
- 25:43Jon: he's got her in a pretty fucking good
- 25:46Ryan: but do you think a piece of him
- 25:48Kearns: He's done.
- 25:48Ryan: missing then?
- 25:51Kearns: I mean maybe, but they, they don't give you enough to really flush that out.
- 25:55Everybody else has got something missing, but he wasn't under for very long.
- 25:58I think that's the argument.
- 25:59Ryan: right.
- 26:00This is an interesting theory.
- 26:01Jon: yeah, I think time has something to
- 26:03Ryan: Okay.
- 26:05Kearns: But he runs through everywhere looking for his son.
- 26:07He's following the trail of the kids left and he finds his son and he
- 26:10just picks him up and walks away.
- 26:11Ryan: Okay.
- 26:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:13Kearns: I think it's hilarious that he doesn't give a shit about
- 26:14the rest of the kids, by the way.
- 26:16Just leaves all them standing there staring at the corpse.
- 26:20Jon: Yeah.
- 26:22Kearns: That's Archer for you?
- 26:24Jon: what's the significance of the bell?
- 26:28I
- 26:28Ryan: control,
- 26:30Jon: does there need to be a, a deeper significance of the bell?
- 26:33It's,
- 26:33Kearns: Starts the smell.
- 26:34Ryan: like,
- 26:35Jon: It's,
- 26:36Kearns: Yeah, that's probably what they're going for.
- 26:38It's got the symbol on it too.
- 26:40Then you note the symbols on it.
- 26:42Ryan: I mean, I would've,
- 26:43Kearns: The symbols are on it.
- 26:44Ryan: asked about the salt lines, I would've kind of
- 26:47been like, okay, I, I got you
- 26:48Kearns: That's witchy stuff.
- 26:50That's witchy.
- 26:51Witchy stuff.
- 26:51Ryan: bell, the bell's signal.
- 26:53Jon: no, the,
- 26:54Kearns: That's voodoo too.
- 26:55Jon: the salt lines is really another pretty established
- 26:59possession witchcrafty kind of
- 27:01Kearns: Yeah,
- 27:02Jon: That those beings can't cross salt.
- 27:04Kearns: they do that.
- 27:05salt is all used a lot in voodoo as well to protect yourself from the
- 27:08things you're, you're working with, or at least it is in fictional voodoo.
- 27:13I don't know about real voodoo for that, but
- 27:16Ryan: in certain cases, yes, it's,
- 27:21Jon: Um,
- 27:22Ryan: practice voodoo, but when I was doing my,
- 27:25Kearns: you're not convincing me
- 27:26Ryan: I,
- 27:26Kearns: just by denying it.
- 27:27Ryan: I was,
- 27:28Jon: You don't practice.
- 27:29Ryan: I,
- 27:29Jon: practice pania.
- 27:31Ryan: you know,
- 27:33Jon: Do you have a crystal
- 27:34Ryan: listen, they did some what?
- 27:36Jon: How about a million
- 27:37Ryan: I wish I had a million dollars.
- 27:39Jon: all?
- 27:39Ryan: I
- 27:40Kearns: That'd be nice.
- 27:41I'll take zombies.
- 27:43Actually, you can have the million.
- 27:44I want my zombie people.
- 27:46I wanna watch the world burn.
- 27:49We're getting to that point in life where you become the villain.
- 27:52Ryan: I just wanted to show you,
- 27:53Jon: but a, a better question for you, Ryan, is would you pop a cap in Sancho?
- 27:59Kearns: If you're listening and you don't know what he is talking about.
- 28:01I'm sorry for you.
- 28:02I'm not gonna tell you.
- 28:04Jon: Uh,
- 28:04Ryan: if you, if
- 28:05Jon: didn't
- 28:05Kearns: It would be sublime if you could figure it out.
- 28:07Ryan: gonna, oh, okay.
- 28:08Listen, name the song, at least it's been said, but just name the song,
- 28:15like, and subscribe.
- 28:16There we go.
- 28:17Little plus there.
- 28:19Jon: Yeah.
- 28:19Kearns: I thought you were goading me to do it.
- 28:20I'm so glad I didn't just spit it out.
- 28:22Ryan: gonna, I
- 28:23Kearns: Uh, it's like,
- 28:23Ryan: name the band and the song, and then you were like, supply.
- 28:26And I was like, oh crap.
- 28:27How do I
- 28:28Kearns: well, I gave him a hint.
- 28:29I gave him a hint.
- 28:29Well, I also didn't outright say the band's name was Sublime.
- 28:32I said it as.
- 28:34God damnit.
- 28:35All right, we're moving on.
- 28:38So the,
- 28:39Jon: Um,
- 28:40Kearns: here, there, John, John, you go,
- 28:44Jon: no, I, I'm just gonna, I'll move on to more questions
- 28:47from this review 'cause he's got
- 28:49Ryan: Okay.
- 28:50Jon: so one of the three complaints here, why even introduce the affair
- 28:55of the dad or the druggie character?
- 28:57Kearns: the affair with Diane, who's actually that, she's another actress.
- 29:01June, Diane Raphael plays Donna Morgan rather, she's the wife who
- 29:05tries to beat up Justine or the girlfriend tries to beat up Justine.
- 29:09That is interesting because Paul, Paul needing to be a scumbag and all
- 29:15that stuff isn't necessary for the plot of the movie, but once again,
- 29:19character building establishes Justine as kind of having some loose morals.
- 29:24Ryan: Yep.
- 29:25Kearns: There's.
- 29:25Jon: yeah.
- 29:26that's kind of the least important thing that they introduce into this.
- 29:31But you're complaining about introducing Archer, like you need
- 29:35that character, you need the angry
- 29:37Kearns: Yeah.
- 29:38Jon: You have to introduce him some that, that
- 29:41Ryan: Uh, he's introduced.
- 29:42Kearns: Yeah,
- 29:43Jon: you
- 29:43Ryan: introduced in the beginning.
- 29:44I mean, you don't see his face, but you see him stand up.
- 29:48You hear Josh Brolin speak as the character.
- 29:51He's at the PTA, so they do introduce him and they show like him in the truck.
- 29:56So his presence is felt.
- 29:59so I,
- 30:00Kearns: agreed.
- 30:01Ryan: you know, it's subtle.
- 30:02Kearns: I
- 30:03Jon: Yeah.
- 30:03And,
- 30:03Kearns: was done too.
- 30:04Jon: and, and to introduce
- 30:07Ryan: that.
- 30:07Jon: the druggie character you like, he gives, you the plausible
- 30:12reason for somebody to be
- 30:14Ryan: Yes.
- 30:14Jon: the house.
- 30:16Kearns: Fair point.
- 30:17Jon: he finds a house that looks like it's unoccupied and breaks into
- 30:21steal stuff for, to pawn like that, character has to exist, otherwise you
- 30:27Ryan: Yep.
- 30:27Jon: get in the
- 30:28Kearns: We don't get the reveal of where the kids are in the basement.
- 30:31Plus, it's a creepy ass scene when they, you know, the two
- 30:35zombified parents are sitting there
- 30:38Ryan: God.
- 30:38Kearns: then they get up when he's like pulling the silverware up.
- 30:41That's cool, man.
- 30:42Ryan: was creepy just seeing them sitting there and you can tell
- 30:45like something's wrong, but that scene was like nerve wracking.
- 30:49Like nerve wracking where, oh, um, the movie don't breathe.
- 30:53Like
- 30:54Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 30:54Ryan: of nerve wracking 'cause as like a audience member, you know, something
- 30:58in the house 'cause uh, Justine peeks her through the, the little slit
- 31:04through the newspapers, sees the parents and like, starts off on that.
- 31:10Kearns: Just figured something out
- 31:12Ryan: Yep.
- 31:12Kearns: in that scene.
- 31:13Presumably when the druggie, what's his name is that James.
- 31:17James is walking through the house and everything.
- 31:19He's making a bit of a racket and stuff.
- 31:21He goes up, he, he tries to open Gladys's door, it's locked, comes
- 31:25back downstairs and everything.
- 31:27You would assume because the parents get up that Gladys sick them on James,
- 31:32but she doesn't have anything of James's to wrap around that branch
- 31:37and sick on James or like to use that.
- 31:39So how did she get them to, well, they weren't darting after him either though.
- 31:43They just got up and walked.
- 31:46So I guess it's a little different.
- 31:48Ryan: during the entire time.
- 31:51Kearns: I think he might've been in his bedroom or he maybe was out at school.
- 31:55Jon: yeah, he may, because I think they started
- 31:58Ryan: Okay.
- 31:58Jon: in daylight, so I'm guessing
- 32:01Ryan: That was a speak about creepy scene when Justine's staking out
- 32:05the house and she runs up and yeah.
- 32:09I, no, that, that got me.
- 32:13Jon: yep.
- 32:14That was a good, that was a really good scene.
- 32:16I, I like that a lot.
- 32:17so what's the obsession with parasites in this movie?
- 32:21Kearns: This one's pretty on the nose too.
- 32:24Jon: like this, is hitting you over the head.
- 32:26If you needed this more.
- 32:28Kearns: fact that he's bringing that up, he knows
- 32:31Ryan: Yes, she is.
- 32:32Kearns: This guy's like a troll.
- 32:33Yeah.
- 32:33Gladys is 100%.
- 32:35Jon: has
- 32:35Kearns: 'cause he's got it.
- 32:36Figure it out.
- 32:36He's a pair.
- 32:37This might be the director.
- 32:38This reviewer.
- 32:39Ryan: Crager, your son of a bitch.
- 32:42Kearns: Yeah.
- 32:42He's just,
- 32:42Ryan: you though.
- 32:43Jon: himself a one star
- 32:44Ryan: He's,
- 32:45Jon: could
- 32:45Kearns: yeah, for real.
- 32:47What a 3D chess move.
- 32:48Ryan: did it for dogma already.
- 32:51All right.
- 32:51Kearns: I thought you when you wrote the review.
- 32:55Jon: No, he,
- 32:55Ryan: It's so good.
- 32:56Jon: that story that he went, the Westboro
- 32:59Kearns: Yeah,
- 32:59Jon: protesting his movie and he went and joined them.
- 33:02Ryan: I don't know what this
- 33:04Kearns: that's very Kevin Smith, him
- 33:05Ryan: it's not good.
- 33:06It's really not good.
- 33:08That exact quote.
- 33:09I just swallowed these people.
- 33:10It's not good.
- 33:12It's religious.
- 33:13I don't know.
- 33:16Kearns: religious.
- 33:16I don't know
- 33:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 33:18Kearns: Kevin Smith.
- 33:19He's the best.
- 33:20Jon: And
- 33:21Ryan: He's so great.
- 33:22Jon: Kevin Smith.
- 33:24Ryan: Scooch bouies.
- 33:26Jon: Um, Snoo Bies Fly Fat Ass Fly.
- 33:36Kearns: Shoot.
- 33:37Jon: Um.
- 33:38Kearns: Yeah.
- 33:38Jon: So how did no one suspect the aunt when all the kids vanished and the
- 33:42parents both mysteriously had strokes?
- 33:46it's pretty clear that the police did suspect that something was
- 33:49going on with the one surviving kid.
- 33:53They just couldn't
- 33:54Kearns: They, they inspected the house.
- 33:56They did the whole thing.
- 33:58Jon: Yeah.
- 33:59Kearns: They did the whole song and dance.
- 34:00But it's, the thing with law is like they need evidence
- 34:04if they didn't find anything.
- 34:07But the weird part is if the kids, where do the kids go to hide?
- 34:11Ryan: That's a good question.
- 34:12'cause they all run off.
- 34:14Jon: don't show it.
- 34:15Kearns: Yeah, they, that's a little lazy.
- 34:16Jon: off, but they don't show where she
- 34:18Kearns: It's a little lazy.
- 34:19Like if they're in the woods and then they run back.
- 34:23Ryan: they're just
- 34:23Jon: They might be, they, she might have just sent them far
- 34:26Ryan: hiding in the brush.
- 34:28Kearns: Right.
- 34:29Because it would only take one person stumbling on
- 34:31Ryan: Timmy.
- 34:32Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 34:33Kearns: 18 kids.
- 34:34Jon: the only question he really gets to that I don't know an answer
- 34:37for is the gun over the house
- 34:41Kearns: And that one is, that's an artistic choice.
- 34:44'cause the people are being used as weapons and the gun does have the time.
- 34:48They all got called on it and it's archer's nightmare.
- 34:51So you could go in any direction with it.
- 34:53Like,
- 34:54Jon: Yeah.
- 34:54Kearns: but
- 34:55Ryan: the, that interpretation because it connects not like.
- 34:58Not only the title, but the idea that these people being controlled
- 35:03by Gladys are becoming, are, well, they become weapons technically.
- 35:08I, it was a little artistic, but it works.
- 35:11I think like, it's like the time and all that, what could happen.
- 35:15Kearns: there was the only part of the movie when it happened.
- 35:18I was like, this is the dud.
- 35:19This just, it's just so out of place.
- 35:21And then after when I finished the movie, I was like, I was right.
- 35:24That was kind of weird.
- 35:26Ryan: well, it's,
- 35:26Kearns: That was kind of, didn't need to be, that's just my pick.
- 35:29Yeah.
- 35:29Ryan: yeah.
- 35:30Like, okay, so when you're watching The Big Lebowski for the first time
- 35:33and he goes through the dream sequence,
- 35:36Kearns: Tread carefully here, Ryan.
- 35:38Ryan: the first time.
- 35:38No, I love the, I, I, I love that scene, but when you watch it,
- 35:42you're like, what is going on?
- 35:43'cause you know, he is all drugged up, but like,
- 35:46Kearns: Well, but, but you know, you know what's going on in that scene.
- 35:50Ryan: Brolin's going through
- 35:50Kearns: I mean, if you know, you know,
- 35:53Ryan: if you know, you know,
- 35:55Kearns: you know, you know.
- 35:56But Yeah, but I don't think that's a fair, like, it feels like the
- 36:01director wanted to put a subliminal message in our heads like weapon, the
- 36:05movies, weapons, the kids are weapons.
- 36:08And it was just, I just felt like it was a weird wedding cake topper sort of thing.
- 36:13And the graphic is outta place in the movie in general.
- 36:17They don't do anything even remotely close to that throughout the rest of the film.
- 36:20It's just weird.
- 36:22Jon: Nope.
- 36:23Kearns: I didn't hate it.
- 36:24Jon: really
- 36:25Ryan: No, that's fair.
- 36:26Jon: that's really the only part that does for
- 36:29Kearns: Oh, you, you have it as a dud too.
- 36:30I'm in good company then.
- 36:32Jon: just that scene, just that one part.
- 36:34It
- 36:35Kearns: And I don't begrudge you for defending it either.
- 36:37'cause like it was a reach.
- 36:38It was a risk.
- 36:39It was, yeah.
- 36:40Ryan: liked it.
- 36:41Jon: Yeah.
- 36:41I mean, I like risks.
- 36:43I just, that one didn't
- 36:44Kearns: Yeah.
- 36:44I like the rest of that sequence though.
- 36:47The rest of that sequence was necessary.
- 36:49Ryan: Oh, yeah.
- 36:50Jon: Absolutely.
- 36:51Ryan: like though, uh.
- 36:53The dream sequence before with Justine, that that one hit more, I don't know.
- 36:59For
- 36:59Kearns: That was scary.
- 37:00That was a scary one.
- 37:02Yeah.
- 37:02Ryan: you kept seeing in the trailer, and then you see the buildup for it.
- 37:06I mean,
- 37:07Kearns: When she wakes up and looks down the hall throughout the rest of the house
- 37:09too, that shit freaks me out that like, I will never not be on edge by that.
- 37:13'cause you know, you get to a certain age and it's like, what was that sound?
- 37:16You're like, all right, I guess I'll sacrifice myself for the
- 37:18family and you grab your, your whatever and you head downstairs,
- 37:23Ryan: that's,
- 37:23Kearns: face it.
- 37:24Ryan: I stopped playing Silent Hill too.
- 37:25The other night.
- 37:26I had my,
- 37:27Kearns: Oh fuck
- 37:28Ryan: open.
- 37:28I heard shit outside and I went, Nope, shut the game down.
- 37:34everything
- 37:34Kearns: yeah.
- 37:35Ryan: door.
- 37:36I'm not playing with this tonight.
- 37:37Nope.
- 37:39Kearns: We have coyotes that come right up to the back door over here and they whoop.
- 37:43There's gotta be 20 of 'em back there and it's only happens.
- 37:46It used to happen twice a year.
- 37:47Three times a year.
- 37:48Now it happens once every couple of years, but man is, it's still unnerving.
- 37:54Ryan: of the coyotes?
- 37:56Kearns: Oh, I would love to be kidding me.
- 37:58That would be a great.
- 37:59Jon: can we talk about what
- 38:00Ryan: Oh God,
- 38:01Kearns: I like Gladys.
- 38:03Jon: I love
- 38:04Kearns: of people don't like her too, by the way, 'cause she's all done up weird.
- 38:07But that the makeup, the clothing style, presumably she's pretty old because
- 38:13of the life stealing parasite thing.
- 38:15And I think that's what the clothes are for.
- 38:17I think that went over people's heads.
- 38:19'cause she's got the wi wacky clothes
- 38:21Jon: Yeah.
- 38:22Yeah.
- 38:22She, I mean, that's Amy Madigan, who's 75 in real life,
- 38:28Ryan: 75, you know.
- 38:31Jon: she's
- 38:32Kearns: doing for 75.
- 38:33Ryan: is.
- 38:33'cause I, I remember from Uncle Buck and, I mean, I thought she's had to be
- 38:39then in her thirties, then mid thirties.
- 38:44Jon: Yeah.
- 38:44She is probably in her
- 38:46Ryan: I.
- 38:46Jon: for Uncle Buck.
- 38:47Uncle
- 38:48Ryan: Me and a coworker, me and a coworker, miss aged her earlier today.
- 38:53'cause we thought she was much older than Uncle Buck.
- 38:58Much
- 38:58Kearns: Yeah, Amy Madigan is the great actress too, and I was so
- 39:02happy when I saw her in this.
- 39:03'cause I didn't know it was her.
- 39:05I didn't know she was Gladys either in the beginning until
- 39:07they took the makeup off her.
- 39:08I was like, oh my God, it's you.
- 39:09Jon: Yeah,
- 39:10Kearns: Uh,
- 39:11Jon: But it's such a cool villain, like, and she does such a good
- 39:17job playing it that you hate
- 39:19Ryan: yes.
- 39:19Jon: moment
- 39:20Kearns: yep.
- 39:20I can't stand her.
- 39:21Jon: you
- 39:22Kearns: I hate when she's getting what she wants.
- 39:24The scene where she gets, Marcus annoyed the shit out of me.
- 39:28Ryan: about that.
- 39:29Kearns: like, were they feeding her everything she needed to get that started?
- 39:33And then the brutal killing of Marcus's partner was so rough, and
- 39:39that's why, and that explained why he looked like that with this bugged out
- 39:42eyes when he finally got to Justine.
- 39:44Jon: Yeah.
- 39:44And, and that's why you need the chapters, because there's no
- 39:48way Justine or Archer knows that
- 39:50Ryan: he started,
- 39:51Kearns: And that's what makes it work.
- 39:52Ryan: and I saw his face and all I thought of was big trouble in little China.
- 39:56Like, I was like, where,
- 39:58Kearns: Good call.
- 39:59Ryan: with this right now?
- 40:00And then when you see that buildup, and Margaret doesn't want anything to do
- 40:03with her, he just wants to enjoy his hot dogs, you know, watch his soaps,
- 40:08whatever he is doing with his partner.
- 40:09And then he denies her.
- 40:11Jon: Yep.
- 40:12Ryan: The partner's a little nice.
- 40:13Which you're like, okay.
- 40:16that scene
- 40:16Kearns: I would've told her to get fucked too, to be honest.
- 40:18Jon: they're watching their, parasite
- 40:20Ryan: Fair.
- 40:21Kearns: Yeah.
- 40:22It over the head.
- 40:23Over the head.
- 40:23Over the head.
- 40:24Ryan: That is a nice connection there.
- 40:25But
- 40:26Kearns: I mean, they slam you.
- 40:27Barbarian does the same thing.
- 40:29Ryan: do.
- 40:29Kearns: They slam you with the message.
- 40:32Jon: he's not subtle
- 40:33Kearns: No.
- 40:34Jon: and somehow people missed it.
- 40:36Like, it's, you, really are sort of a, becoming a, a
- 40:40group of people that needs it.
- 40:42It
- 40:42Kearns: Bradbury warned us,
- 40:44Jon: think
- 40:45Kearns: need English teachers to be allowed to English teach because
- 40:48we can't do critical thinking.
- 40:50And that's where it happens.
- 40:52It happens in other classrooms too, but it doesn't get pulled out of the
- 40:55ether anywhere else, but in an English classroom, I'm gonna say at that age.
- 40:59Anyway.
- 41:00Ryan: I agree.
- 41:01Kearns: Yeah.
- 41:02Jon: And it, it's fine to not like a movie, but I mean, if you don't like
- 41:07weapons of some of the things that we've talked about, it's more because weapons
- 41:12didn't fully explain things to you.
- 41:16Kearns: Yeah.
- 41:16Ryan: like if people don't get on the first watch, give it a second chance.
- 41:21it'll fill in more for you that,
- 41:23Kearns: That's a good suggestion, Ryan.
- 41:25Where I, I was gonna tell people to find Jesus, but that's, that's better.
- 41:29That's a nice middle ground.
- 41:30Yeah.
- 41:31Ryan: times to watch Anchorman, so I get it.
- 41:34All
- 41:34Kearns: God.
- 41:36It's the deep thematic relevance of the film that really
- 41:39helped to keep coming back for
- 41:41Ryan: I, I love Lamp.
- 41:44Jon: so weapons
- 41:47Kearns: Baxter.
- 41:49Jon: The few pod movies.
- 41:50I sat and watched
- 41:51Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 41:53Jon: and as soon as it finished, I turned to her and said, I need a couple
- 41:58days to really think about and digest this movie, and probably I'm gonna
- 42:02need to watch it at least one more time
- 42:05Kearns: Did you watch it twice?
- 42:07Jon: like, I have
- 42:08Kearns: Okay.
- 42:09Jon: it twice yet,
- 42:10twice
- 42:10Kearns: say
- 42:11Jon: I'm gonna hold, I'm gonna hold the second
- 42:13Kearns: that
- 42:13Ryan: yeah,
- 42:14Kearns: dedication right there.
- 42:15What was her take on it?
- 42:16Jon: She li, I think she liked it less than I did.
- 42:19Ryan: Really.
- 42:19So watched
- 42:21Kearns: A Luke Warren take.
- 42:22Ryan: she, she really loved it.
- 42:24She thought it was a really good outing and, uh, it worked.
- 42:28just, she loved how it was filmed, especially.
- 42:31Kearns: Yeah, that, I mean,
- 42:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 42:34Kearns: all that aspect of it going and then you get to the climax of the movie
- 42:38where we find the, kids now there's the battle royale going on for what The fate
- 42:42of these children and we're, watching this movie and we're kind of know the stakes
- 42:47and we know the movie we're watching, so we know it's not gonna be clean.
- 42:50They're not gonna just walk off into the sunset.
- 42:52Having Alex sic them on Gladys was epic.
- 42:57It was a cool way to end that, like that tense part of the film with
- 43:01what's gonna happen to the kids.
- 43:02And Archers arc. And Justine's arc too.
- 43:05Although at that point I really didn't care much about her.
- 43:08She'd surfed her purpose, I'm sorry to say, because she's
- 43:10not a character you like love.
- 43:13Ryan: like that tweener, like you
- 43:15Kearns: Yeah.
- 43:15By then you've, she was the first chapter.
- 43:18By then you're at Archer.
- 43:19You've seen Archer's whole redemption arc occur and stuff, so you're just sort
- 43:22of away from Justine, that home wrecker.
- 43:25Jon: Yep.
- 43:27Yep.
- 43:27And I mean, I will say you're watching, you're watching Archer choke Justine out,
- 43:35and you like, you understand he's under.
- 43:38The power of Gladys at that point.
- 43:40And you also, this is sort of the one thing that's telegraphed, is you do
- 43:44sort of figure out that when Gladys
- 43:47Ryan: Yeah.
- 43:48Jon: gonna
- 43:48Kearns: Yep.
- 43:49Ryan: Sure.
- 43:50Jon: You
- 43:51Kearns: Yep.
- 43:51That's very linear.
- 43:52The whole movie is very linear.
- 43:54That's the other thing.
- 43:55It's not ostentatious, it's not trying to be something.
- 43:57It's not, it's not trying to be too smart for the room.
- 44:01The movie, like John keeps saying too, the movie is very linear in, in
- 44:06your progression of understanding.
- 44:08Everything is very discernible as it's occurring.
- 44:11And the action is action.
- 44:12It's good, it's fun.
- 44:14The scary, John might have more to say on this than, I will, but it
- 44:18was right above the, like the bottom line for it to be a horror movie.
- 44:22Like maybe it just made it over the bar, but it's not a deep horror film.
- 44:28Jon: I'd say it's more thriller than a horror.
- 44:31I mean, you get the co the couple of dream moments with Gladys that kind
- 44:36of have the creep element and a couple other parts are a little creepy, but
- 44:41for me it's a thriller, which is fine.
- 44:43Like, it just, it doesn't have to be a
- 44:45Kearns: Thrilling.
- 44:46Jon: just didn't have to have scares
- 44:48Kearns: Right?
- 44:48It's gory.
- 44:49There's some gore.
- 44:50It's uncomfortable at times watching some of the scenes.
- 44:54Jon: I mean, you get a, you get a nice day of the dead tribute
- 44:58Ryan: Yeah.
- 44:58You do
- 44:58Kearns: yeah, it's getting taken down,
- 45:01Jon: she very much goes out like a day of the dead
- 45:04Ryan: grabbing the air,
- 45:06Kearns: torn apart.
- 45:06They rip her, they rip the top of her head off from the bottom of her.
- 45:09Ryan: they eat her
- 45:12Jon: all she,
- 45:12Ryan: because she mentioned,
- 45:14Jon: all she needs to be doing, is yelling, choke at 'em.
- 45:19Kearns: I don't think they eat her.
- 45:20even though she alluded to that with the parents, I can make them eat each other.
- 45:24that was the other thing, Alex, that Alex Arc where you're
- 45:27watching him have a defeat.
- 45:28All the amide people that broke my heart.
- 45:32Yep.
- 45:32Ryan: smart.
- 45:33Kearns: Like
- 45:33Ryan: They,
- 45:34Kearns: kid trauma stuff, man,
- 45:36Ryan: grew, the character grew and he got smarter because I mean, do you think
- 45:40he would've known how to do all that stuff with like the voodoo and stuff
- 45:44Kearns: that Matthew kid better leave him alone now.
- 45:46Ryan: hasn't sp
- 45:47Kearns: That's what I'm saying
- 45:48Ryan: in a
- 45:48Kearns: because he's got that tree.
- 45:50Yeah, that's a good point.
- 45:52Archer's kid hasn't spoken in yet, but yeah, don't forget
- 45:54Alex still has that tree.
- 45:56Ryan: so you're saying,
- 45:57Jon: Yeah.
- 45:57And how, and Alex paid attention.
- 46:01He
- 46:01Ryan: say,
- 46:02Jon: it
- 46:02Kearns: Yeah.
- 46:02So
- 46:02Ryan: made him a mute.
- 46:05Kearns: there you go.
- 46:06Maybe now I don't hate the ending as much.
- 46:09Jon: He might've.
- 46:09I mean, that could explain why some of them come, but although, I mean, I. If
- 46:14he had the power to do that to, Archer's kid, why didn't he give his parents
- 46:21Ryan: true.
- 46:23It's fair.
- 46:23Kearns: Yeah, I don't think that it works that way.
- 46:25I think that there was a toll that Gladys was sucking the
- 46:29life out of 'em, and that's the toll that that's what they paid.
- 46:32Archer wasn't under the influence long enough to really have been affected.
- 46:35And that all makes sense to me.
- 46:37It's like, okay,
- 46:38Jon: And some of the kids were and some of them were.
- 46:40And like you,
- 46:42Kearns: it all tracks.
- 46:43the ending of the movie is where I have my biggest gripe with it.
- 46:47and it's really just got to do with the fact that they could have added a minute
- 46:51to the film and probably landed it better.
- 46:53I don't hate the way it ended.
- 46:56I just hate the way they executed the ending.
- 46:59It's an abrupt stop.
- 47:00And I just don't think they needed to do that.
- 47:02I think they could have done it a little bit better, I guess.
- 47:05They were just like, we all right.
- 47:06The movie's over and they, they cut it with John, with Archer walking
- 47:09with Matthew over his shoulder and the narrator explaining things
- 47:12didn't get all the way better.
- 47:14Some of 'em never got back to normal, and then it just stops
- 47:17talking and this movie goes black.
- 47:19I'm like, Ugh, give me something.
- 47:23Ryan: Hey.
- 47:23Kearns: Give me something.
- 47:24Or at least like, don't shove it down my throat so fast.
- 47:26Like I, that could have been done a little bit better.
- 47:28In my opinion.
- 47:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:31Ryan: a fair opinion.
- 47:32It's a fair opinion.
- 47:34Jon: Yeah, I can, I could see that.
- 47:37Kearns: That was my own, the only thing, I just don't, I think
- 47:39that the only, a non great part.
- 47:43Ryan: Uh, it's fair.
- 47:43I, I feel like, like it's not bad ending.
- 47:47It could have been better, you know, but it does like kinda closes
- 47:52it out, but makes you wonder, could there be more to the story?
- 47:58Could there be more of a connection, you know?
- 48:02Jon: Well, I've definitely heard that there are, there
- 48:06are discussions about Gladys
- 48:09Ryan: new line cinema.
- 48:09Of course they're gonna do spinoffs now.
- 48:12I mean the con,
- 48:13Kearns: Please don't.
- 48:14Ryan: is ending, so they need something.
- 48:18Jon: I don't, I don't know that you need to, but I think, you know,
- 48:22maybe a, a singular Gladys prequel be
- 48:29Kearns: I wouldn't hate that.
- 48:31Jon: it
- 48:31Kearns: But the problem is, is that we already know that this.
- 48:34We know her trick, so it's not nearly as fun now.
- 48:38Um, but maybe they, they could presumably do something else with it.
- 48:42Sure.
- 48:42But I don't think they'll do just one.
- 48:44'cause if it makes money, there's gonna be a whole shitload of Gladys out there.
- 48:48Ryan: comes back.
- 48:49Kearns: And she's 75.
- 48:51Jon: And, and that is, that is the
- 48:54Ryan: Yeah.
- 48:55Jon: character really.
- 48:56I mean,
- 48:56Kearns: Yeah.
- 48:57Jon: seems to be the person that most audience reaction is focused on.
- 49:01Kearns: Yeah.
- 49:01I mean, she's, she did a fantastic job
- 49:05Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:06Kearns: as actors of that era tend to do
- 49:08Ryan: And she did.
- 49:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:11So here's the question.
- 49:14Awards have recently liked to honor supporting roles in horror movies.
- 49:21Kearns: so.
- 49:22Which one?
- 49:23Jon: Get a
- 49:24Kearns: You think Amy?
- 49:24Jon: Gladys.
- 49:25Ryan: I
- 49:25Kearns: if anybody deserves it, it's her.
- 49:28Nobody else.
- 49:29No.
- 49:29No other performance is worthy of it.
- 49:31Brolin's is probably the closest and it's just too far.
- 49:35Jon: Brolin is
- 49:36Kearns: Yeah.
- 49:36Jon: like, I mean, he's,
- 49:38Kearns: Brolin,
- 49:39Ryan: I think,
- 49:39he top billing?
- 49:40Kearns: Julia Garner would be more, actually Julia Garner would
- 49:43probably be more deserving of a nod.
- 49:45And she, like I said, they're miles behind Amy Madigan's performance in this, so
- 49:50Ryan: I would give it to Amy Manikin.
- 49:52Jon: I would, I, I think there's a possibility you see her get a
- 49:55Ryan: That would be nice if she wanted,
- 49:56Kearns: it'd be nice to see her nominated.
- 49:58It'd be nice to see
- 49:59Jon: An an older, they like to throw those, to throw that to like
- 50:03the older actors and actresses,
- 50:07Kearns: JK Simmons and stuff.
- 50:09Yeah.
- 50:09Jon: mm-hmm.
- 50:11D or DK
- 50:12Kearns: DK Simmons, man.
- 50:13Gotta watch out
- 50:14Jon: RK
- 50:15Ryan: not my tempo.
- 50:17Kearns: Not my tempo.
- 50:18Not my tempo.
- 50:20Love that I will watch Whiplash as Comfort Food now.
- 50:23It's so funny.
- 50:26It's so funny.
- 50:27I enjoy the movie, so like I, I only rewatch it up to the point of where he
- 50:31gets in his car accident and ruins his music career and stuff like that part.
- 50:36I usually, I'm like, okay, I, I'm good from here and I just stop.
- 50:40It's just JK Simmons being a dick is all I wanna want.
- 50:45It's so funny.
- 50:46Anyway, JK Simmons should have been in this movie.
- 50:49Ryan: God.
- 50:49Imagine him as Archer.
- 50:52Kearns: I think I would've rather him as Marcus.
- 50:56Jon: It'd be an
- 50:56Kearns: That would've been cool, right?
- 50:59Jon: He would've been an interesting
- 51:01Ryan: sure.
- 51:02Jon: They didn't give that guy a lot to do, but that would be a
- 51:05Kearns: Yeah.
- 51:05He was just an angry father-in-law kind of guy.
- 51:08Jon: Yeah.
- 51:09Ryan: daughter snitched.
- 51:11I'm, yeah,
- 51:13Jon: his.
- 51:15His son-in-law is also
- 51:17Ryan: I,
- 51:18Jon: pretty unhinged,
- 51:19Ryan: I felt bad for Justine after he gets pricked by the
- 51:22needle and then he pricks her.
- 51:25It's just like,
- 51:28Kearns: Yeah, I forgot about that.
- 51:29Where he stabs the,
- 51:29Ryan: yeah.
- 51:30Kearns: he gets stabbed in the face.
- 51:32Ryan: Yeah.
- 51:32He, he deserved that.
- 51:35Kearns: You of age.
- 51:35Do you,
- 51:36Jon: gets,
- 51:38he gets, he get that
- 51:40Kearns: that was funny.
- 51:41Hepatitis, anything like that?
- 51:43Not that I'm aware of.
- 51:45Ryan: No.
- 51:45No.
- 51:47Oh
- 51:48Kearns: It's good times.
- 51:49I mean, so that's weapons guys.
- 51:52I mean, we are talking about it like we're lukewarm on it.
- 51:54We're not, we really like this movie.
- 51:56Jon: I am very
- 51:58Kearns: But what we have to do before we wrap up is really just
- 52:01hit like, what did you think?
- 52:02We know there's a deeper meaning here.
- 52:04What do you guys think the deeper theme is?
- 52:07And I always take the mic and talk for two hours on this shit, so I'm gonna shut up
- 52:12and I just wanna hear what you guys think.
- 52:13The deeper meaning is.
- 52:15Ryan: The deeper meaning for me, I feel like
- 52:21it's hard 'cause like watching it, like from the film perspective, I was
- 52:25like so drawn to how the cuts were.
- 52:29I mean, the deeper meaning to me is like can go pretty fast.
- 52:34go away quickly, but they can always be found.
- 52:38And then even though they're found, sometimes it takes time for them to
- 52:45rebuild and that rebuilding could be a month, two months, a year,
- 52:5220 years, but they'll get there.
- 53:00Jon: All right, so went in with this notion and it, definitely didn't
- 53:07do anything to dissuade me from it.
- 53:10It feels like a school
- 53:12Ryan: Oh, okay.
- 53:13Jon: me.
- 53:13I. It,
- 53:15Kearns: That's.
- 53:16Jon: it feels like you get into that classroom the day after they're all gone.
- 53:21And
- 53:22Ryan: Uh.
- 53:22Jon: gone and it's just, you know, you get the trauma of a town.
- 53:28'cause it's not just the parents, it's the whole town that's traumatized by it.
- 53:33And you know, you get the lone survivor and then know, you have, even, after you
- 53:39get the kids recovered, there's still
- 53:43Ryan: Yep.
- 53:44Jon: in them.
- 53:46Like there's a lot of, yeah, there's a lot of that in there to me.
- 53:51I mean, maybe it's, you know, like something pref on what
- 53:56we do that makes me see that,
- 53:59Kearns: Perfect though, because look at Archer too, John, like Archer's character.
- 54:03Everybody's scrambling to understand why and just think about what
- 54:07the reaction is every time that happens is to try to figure out why.
- 54:11What was the motive?
- 54:12What was the thing and stuff.
- 54:13And it's always that big scramble and then everybody's arguing about the why.
- 54:17And I think you nailed it.
- 54:19Um, the only thing I could think you could possibly do is scale it up from
- 54:22that on a societal level and talk about how the older generation, if you're doing
- 54:28Gladys, like maybe a double allegory.
- 54:31We got a double layer allegory here, but the older generation is absolutely.
- 54:35Destroying any chance of prosperity for the younger generation.
- 54:40And might I add, these are the ones above us, so don't yell at me.
- 54:45And they're screwing the ones below us and we're right here in the middle.
- 54:48Like, we wanna help, we wanna help.
- 54:50We see what's wrong.
- 54:52I think that the Gladys sucking the life outta the kids thing is part
- 54:56of that larger message as well.
- 54:58But to your point, the main allegory is probably the school shooting aspect.
- 55:02The gun on the house.
- 55:05That's the only thing I could really think of.
- 55:07Why.
- 55:09Jon: That.
- 55:09Yeah.
- 55:09That's the only way I can make that gun make sense to me.
- 55:12Ryan: I can see how that's going.
- 55:13That way.
- 55:14It makes sense.
- 55:16mean, the feeling and,
- 55:18Jon: Which,
- 55:18Ryan: yeah.
- 55:21Jon: I mean, if you want to go, if you want to go really deep,
- 55:23this is just sort of off, off the
- 55:25Ryan: No, that's good.
- 55:26I mean,
- 55:27Jon: is the rescue at the end real or is it just something that they
- 55:31Ryan: oh no, they,
- 55:34Kearns: I think it's real.
- 55:34Ryan: house.
- 55:36Jon: I
- 55:36Kearns: Yeah.
- 55:37They crash through those houses.
- 55:38Jon: like,
- 55:38Ryan: That was
- 55:40Jon: like with the, vividness and the, sort of reality that Gladys was able
- 55:45to put into these people's dreams.
- 55:48Kearns: that's interesting.
- 55:49I'm not buying it though.
- 55:50Ryan: is, this is real baby.
- 55:52Jon: either, but
- 55:53Kearns: thought, but nah, but All right guys, that's weapons.
- 55:58Do we have some top fives?
- 56:00Ryan: course, of
- 56:02Jon: course we
- 56:02Kearns: dammit.
- 56:02All right, we're running late.
- 56:03Let's go.
- 56:04Ryan.
- 56:04Top fives.
- 56:05Ryan: so I went with Top five Witches and I refuse to put Blair Witch Project on it.
- 56:11putting it on.
- 56:11Kearns: Why there's a witch in it.
- 56:13Ryan: it's, I've mentioned it too many times and it's gonna come up
- 56:17Kearns: You just never see her,
- 56:19Ryan: kind of in the shadows.
- 56:21But these wis you do see, and I do say witches because my number
- 56:25five, we're gonna start off with something I watched as a kid.
- 56:30Kearns: which is a eastwick
- 56:31Ryan: Yes.
- 56:32Starring Michelle Pfeiffer share.
- 56:36Sarandon and of course Jack Nicholson as the devil allegedly, directed by
- 56:41George Miller basically follows three best friends who are unaware that they
- 56:44are witches and that their regular meetings have formed an informal coven.
- 56:48The arrival in town of a mysterious man who starts courting them.
- 56:52Marks the start of a back and forth between him and the three women.
- 56:56I have not seen this movie since the early nineties, but I remember
- 56:59a lot of the scenes and especially how they torture Jack Nicholson.
- 57:03It's just,
- 57:05Kearns: he tortures them with his dick too.
- 57:06That movie is all about Jack Nicholson's Dick.
- 57:09Ryan: and his fur, his fur chest.
- 57:12Come on now.
- 57:13Kearns: His furry, furry mansion.
- 57:15It's hard for me to believe Jack Nicholson was such a sex Scott
- 57:19in his heyday, but indeed he was.
- 57:23Yeah, like Jack.
- 57:26Jack had it, I guess.
- 57:27Jon: mean, even I'm not quite old enough for Peak Jack Nicholson sexy.
- 57:34Ryan: Well,
- 57:35Kearns: Oh Lord.
- 57:36Ryan: in the next film did find him sexy for a little bit of time.
- 57:39And that's Angelica Houston.
- 57:41And we're going back to 1990 for We Adults, the Witches.
- 57:46All right.
- 57:47Kearns: Okay.
- 57:47Ryan: of Evil Witches who masquerade as ordinary women and follows a boy and his
- 57:51grandmother, who must find a way to fold their plans of turning children into mice.
- 57:55movie creeped the shit outta me as a kid.
- 57:59I
- 57:59Kearns: Mice part.
- 58:00Yeah.
- 58:00Ryan: But it's,
- 58:01Kearns: Yeah, it's messed up.
- 58:02Ryan: memorable
- 58:03Kearns: loved it.
- 58:03Ryan: and Rowan Atkinson is in it.
- 58:06I mean, I'm a Mr. Bean fan, so it was good like to see him do his
- 58:10little thing and then Angelica Houston going off on her thing.
- 58:14Just, it's a good, uh, adaptation of a Roll Doll story besides Willy
- 58:22Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
- 58:25Uh oh.
- 58:28Jon: Do I have a old doll story that I just stumbled on this week?
- 58:32Do you know what he did in the
- 58:33Ryan: No,
- 58:34Jon: War ii?
- 58:35Ryan: this is,
- 58:37Jon: He was a spy for the British government spaced in the United States,
- 58:43with, among other things, cosing up to and potentially seducing socialites to
- 58:52convince them to speak to their husbands about the dangers of the Nazis and to
- 58:59Ryan: huh.
- 59:00Kearns: It's actually pretty cool.
- 59:02Ryan: I mean, they got a pretty good guy to do
- 59:04Kearns: Not yeah.
- 59:06Ryan: I mean, who are you gonna have, Ian Fleming, that that wouldn't have
- 59:09Kearns: If you, if you guys haven't watched The Wonderful Life of Henry
- 59:13Sugar and the other two short films that are based off the Royal Doll movies,
- 59:17they've all got Benedict Cumberbatch and Ben Kinsley in them and stuff.
- 59:21If you haven't seen them yet, they are well worth the watches.
- 59:25They're very good.
- 59:26By the way,
- 59:26Ryan: oh, yeah.
- 59:27Kearns: doll is fantastic.
- 59:29Ryan: excellent writer and you know, it kind of sums up my feelings on this film.
- 59:36I mean, it's number three, but it's like of defines the nineties, my love
- 59:41for the nineties, it's the craft.
- 59:49I love the craft.
- 59:50Kearns: witches,
- 59:50Ryan: Listen.
- 59:52Kearns: filthy, filthy, goth witches.
- 59:54Ryan: Block,
- 59:57she
- 59:59Kearns: We're not gonna dwell too much on it.
- 1:00:00We're gonna get kicked off the air, but
- 1:00:03Ryan: Nev Campbell.
- 1:00:04Come on
- 1:00:05Kearns: yes.
- 1:00:05Ryan: t Rachel.
- 1:00:06True.
- 1:00:07just four outcast teenage girls who find out they're witches
- 1:00:10and it's a kickass movie.
- 1:00:12If you've never seen the craft, give it a watch.
- 1:00:16Kearns: Baby.
- 1:00:18Jon: There are probably very few move movies that created my taste in women
- 1:00:24Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:00:25I mean, it's all there.
- 1:00:27Ryan: It's, oh, it's all there.
- 1:00:30Kearns: It's all there.
- 1:00:31What's your number two?
- 1:00:31Ryan: two.
- 1:00:31Oh, well, it's all here in this one.
- 1:00:33It's, um, so I saw this film very young, um, on my trip of
- 1:00:40watching through the channels.
- 1:00:42You go on IFC at like 10 o'clock, 11 o'clock at night, and you
- 1:00:45get this gem, 1977 saperia.
- 1:00:50Kearns: Cool.
- 1:00:51Ryan: As a kid, you, I didn't understand what the hell was going
- 1:00:53on, but you wanna know something?
- 1:00:55I was trooper.
- 1:00:56I watched the film, didn't know what, I didn't know what the hell
- 1:01:00was going on, but it stuck with me.
- 1:01:02And like, I get the witchcraft in it, the dancing, the lights, and watching it
- 1:01:10later on, you get a better understanding.
- 1:01:11I recommend the original.
- 1:01:14know the remake is supposed to be good, I, the original is where it
- 1:01:18hits home, to give it more of a plot.
- 1:01:21Jessica Harper, who's at the actress.
- 1:01:23The main actress in the film is an American ballet student who
- 1:01:26transfers to a prestigious European dance Academy, but realizes after a
- 1:01:30series of murders that the academy is a front for a coven of witches.
- 1:01:34And it's directed by Dario Argento.
- 1:01:39Argento it.
- 1:01:41I knew it.
- 1:01:43Jon: So a very similar, very similar Suspiria experience
- 1:01:50I watched as a teenager.
- 1:01:51Didn't get it, watched it six or seven years ago.
- 1:01:54Ryan: It's so good.
- 1:01:55Jon: it.
- 1:01:56Ryan: It's,
- 1:01:58Jon: You don't get, yeah, I don't think you can get it as a teenager
- 1:02:01Ryan: but this, it's,
- 1:02:02Kearns: um,
- 1:02:03Ryan: it's worse.
- 1:02:03'cause I was like seven, eight years old when I, when I watched it,
- 1:02:08Kearns: oh my God.
- 1:02:09Jon: No shot,
- 1:02:10Kearns: Shot.
- 1:02:10Ryan: I just saw colors women and I was just like, okay, this is cool.
- 1:02:16But I, I know Currents needs to go to number one and we're getting there.
- 1:02:22This, this, all right, I'll stop.
- 1:02:24I'll stop.
- 1:02:24'cause I don't want to be like, ah, but number one, I'm going with
- 1:02:30a Kara Issa was Throne of Blood.
- 1:02:34The Macbeth story is filled with witches.
- 1:02:36It's one of my favorite Shakespeares.
- 1:02:38But OSA was throwing her blood, the adaptation into the idea
- 1:02:42of, Japanese storytelling, myth legend, the lore of the ghosts.
- 1:02:46It's got a creepy vibe and it's not supposed to be creepy,
- 1:02:51but does the job well done.
- 1:02:53And, uh, Toro Mune is just, he's excellent.
- 1:02:59He's one of my favorite Japanese actors.
- 1:03:02He's the De Niro of Japanese films at that time, as the Scorsese.
- 1:03:07So.
- 1:03:09that is my number one.
- 1:03:10But John, we gotta hear your top five man.
- 1:03:13we don't need Kern.
- 1:03:14Armenia running wild over here
- 1:03:19Jon: So I went with top five missing kids.
- 1:03:25Kearns: Oh
- 1:03:25Ryan: in film.
- 1:03:26Kearns: God, in film
- 1:03:28Jon: Yep.
- 1:03:29film.
- 1:03:30In film.
- 1:03:31I didn't just grab a whole bunch of old
- 1:03:33Kearns: number five, John Benet Ramsey.
- 1:03:35Jon: number five.
- 1:03:37Number five.
- 1:03:38Timmy Butler from Indianapolis,
- 1:03:40Ryan: Why am I,
- 1:03:42Jon: Just a, on December 5th,
- 1:03:44Kearns: was such a pure moment from Ryan right there from films
- 1:03:49Ryan: how?
- 1:03:49How many chocolates do you wanna buy, Ryan?
- 1:03:51$2. All right.
- 1:03:52Two kids get released right now?
- 1:03:57Kearns: all.
- 1:03:58Jon: so five, the ice
- 1:04:02Ryan: Yes.
- 1:04:03Jon: Gregory, played by Clint Howard, who is also the superior
- 1:04:08Kearns: The superior and the superior casting choice over every
- 1:04:12other living human for this role.
- 1:04:14Jon: Yep.
- 1:04:16Only wants to make the local kids happy with his ice cream.
- 1:04:20The problem is, Gregory is also crazy and before long the locals
- 1:04:25are part of his ice cream business.
- 1:04:28you get a cast littered with horror and b-movie legends like
- 1:04:32Olivia Hussey, Michael Vincent, David Naughton, David Warner.
- 1:04:38and you get a baseball legend too.
- 1:04:40Steve Garvey's
- 1:04:41Kearns: Oh, cool.
- 1:04:43Jon: Yeah.
- 1:04:44Highly recommend ice cream, man.
- 1:04:45Listen, it's not, is not a list movie.
- 1:04:49This is a b movie and it, but it's so much fun.
- 1:04:54Um, so number four, I, I don't know if I've included this.
- 1:04:58Somebody I think has included this before.
- 1:05:01It's 1970 threes, the
- 1:05:03Ryan: I.
- 1:05:04Jon: the original
- 1:05:05Ryan: Not the bees.
- 1:05:09Jon: Nope,
- 1:05:09Ryan: the bees.
- 1:05:10Jon: not the bees.
- 1:05:11PA police officer arrives on an island inhabited by a pagan cult-like
- 1:05:17group in search of a missing girl.
- 1:05:19The locals claim she doesn't exist, but there are weird things going on yet.
- 1:05:24Edward Wood word
- 1:05:25Ryan: Such a good film.
- 1:05:26Jon: this also.
- 1:05:28Kearns: Yeah, it's a really good one.
- 1:05:30Ryan: we're saying, not health for comedy
- 1:05:33Kearns: Now, the remakes all right.
- 1:05:34Ryan: Comedy,
- 1:05:35Kearns: The re.
- 1:05:36Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:38It's
- 1:05:38Ryan: the bees.
- 1:05:40Jon: the re will like the remake based on how well you
- 1:05:44can handle Nicholas Cage at his
- 1:05:47Kearns: C?
- 1:05:47Jon: over the top
- 1:05:48Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:05:49Jon: Yeah, if you can, if you like Nick Cage like that, you'll like the remake
- 1:05:56Ryan: Huh.
- 1:05:56Jon: So,
- 1:05:59uh, number three, I'm going, this was probably.
- 1:06:03Number one, if it were horror and it's prisoners
- 1:06:07Ryan: film.
- 1:06:10Jon: and I, I mean, prisoners jumped out also because of how much Archer reminds
- 1:06:16Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:06:16Jon: of prisoners 'cause that that character could have
- 1:06:20been dropped into prisoners.
- 1:06:22father takes matters into his own hands as he searches
- 1:06:25Kearns: That Hugh Jackman
- 1:06:26Jon: kidnapped
- 1:06:27Kearns: yeah, it's Hugh Jackman.
- 1:06:28Yeah.
- 1:06:29Ryan: Yep.
- 1:06:29And Paul
- 1:06:30Jon: Gien Hall.
- 1:06:32Ryan: that scene.
- 1:06:33Jon: Yep.
- 1:06:35It's a really, really good movie that I had forgotten about until I saw Archer.
- 1:06:39Like the Archer character reminded me of that
- 1:06:42Kearns: Hmm.
- 1:06:42Jon: My number two is a movie that's generally associated with a
- 1:06:46different type of horror movie, but it is also a missing kids movie.
- 1:06:51It's The
- 1:06:52Kearns: Oh, nice.
- 1:06:53That's a good, good little good little sneak in there.
- 1:06:58Jon: Mother and her two sons move in with her father in a coastal
- 1:07:01town with a vampire problem.
- 1:07:03And
- 1:07:03Ryan: good.
- 1:07:03Jon: of missing kids are the two related.
- 1:07:06Ryan: It's just rice Michael.
- 1:07:09Just rice.
- 1:07:11Kearns: They're more related than a southern married couple.
- 1:07:13Ryan: on.
- 1:07:14Kearns: Number one.
- 1:07:15Jon: And my number one is a movie I want to try to work in
- 1:07:20at some point in the next few months onto our, our episode list.
- 1:07:24'cause it's so good.
- 1:07:26It's gonna be hard to have a lot of fun talking about.
- 1:07:28And
- 1:07:29Ryan: okay.
- 1:07:30Jon: her back.
- 1:07:32Um, so you get Sally Hawkins starring her of of Water Fame,
- 1:07:38um, the death of their father.
- 1:07:41Two siblings are sent to live with a foster mother who is preparing for a
- 1:07:45Ryan: that's,
- 1:07:47Jon: And I, I don't want to to tell you anything about the
- 1:07:51missing kid would be a pretty
- 1:07:52Kearns: Yeah, I don't
- 1:07:53Ryan: recent.
- 1:07:53Right.
- 1:07:54Jon: that.
- 1:07:55Ryan: Okay.
- 1:07:56the one I'm thinking about with the,
- 1:07:58Jon: like this year, I believe
- 1:08:01Ryan: it's the poster with the, she's her head shaved.
- 1:08:03Right.
- 1:08:05Okay.
- 1:08:06Yep.
- 1:08:07Kearns: do, do, do, do, do.
- 1:08:08Yeah.
- 1:08:08We'll do an episode on that Bad boy
- 1:08:10Ryan: Yes.
- 1:08:11Kearns: with that bad girl.
- 1:08:12Jon: It's gonna be hard to have a lot of fun talking about, but it's
- 1:08:15Kearns: I mean, we made it through Barbarian that that was, I mean,
- 1:08:18it wasn't too rough to get through 'cause there's a monster allegory.
- 1:08:21This is like fricking horrible.
- 1:08:23Yeah.
- 1:08:24Ryan: I
- 1:08:24Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:08:24I guess I got your point, John.
- 1:08:27But
- 1:08:27Jon: Yeah.
- 1:08:27This one's good.
- 1:08:28This'll be rough to get through, but it's de, it's definitely something
- 1:08:32Ryan: Okay.
- 1:08:32Jon: people
- 1:08:33Kearns: it's an interesting discussion to have in the future too.
- 1:08:35You get a movie like Weapons or Barbarian, which has that, which is, you know, the
- 1:08:39Long Walk, which is about what we're doing to the kids and things like that.
- 1:08:43And then you
- 1:08:43Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:08:44Kearns: get something that's a lot more in your face and
- 1:08:46you're just like watching it.
- 1:08:49There's no veneer, there's no costuming.
- 1:08:52Like this is what you're watching.
- 1:08:54So, but anyway, this was weapons, everybody.
- 1:08:57We liked it.
- 1:08:58I hope you saw it because if you didn't and you got this far, oh,
- 1:09:02Jon: I If you late, if you didn't see it and you got this
- 1:09:06Ryan: Just watch it.
- 1:09:07Yeah.
- 1:09:07Jon: watch it
- 1:09:08Kearns: you know what though?
- 1:09:08I bet you you're still gonna like it.
- 1:09:10Jon: but watch it
- 1:09:10Kearns: I bet you're still gonna like it, but all right.
- 1:09:18Most awkward sign off ever later, everybody.
- 1:09:21Ryan: one.
- 1:09:22Jon: Yeah.
