- 0:00Chapter twelve, asking to give Christ was continually receiving from the Father, that
- 0:06he might communicate to us. The word which ye hear, he said,
- 0:10is not mine, but the fathers which sent to me. The son of
- 0:14Man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, not for himself,
- 0:18but for others. He lived in thought and prayed. From hours spent
- 0:22with God, he came forth morning by morning to bring the light of Heaven
- 0:25to men. Daily he received a fresh baptism of the Holy Spirit. In
- 0:31the early hours of the new day. The Lord awakened him from his slumbers,
- 0:34and his soul and his lips were anointed with grace that he might impart
- 0:37to others. His words were given him fresh from the heavenly courts, words
- 0:42that he might speak in season to the weary and oppressed. The Lord God
- 0:47hath given me, He said, the tongue of the learned, that I
- 0:49should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary.
- 0:53He wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.
- 0:58Christ's disciples were much in pressed by his prayers and by his habit of
- 1:02communion with God. One day after a short absence from their Lord, they
- 1:06found him absorbed in supplication. Seeming unconscious of their presence, he continued praying
- 1:11aloud. The hearts of the disciples were deeply moved. As he ceased praying,
- 1:17They exclaimed, Lord, teach us to pray. In answer, Christ
- 1:19repeated the Lord's prayers he had given it in the Sermon on the Mound.
- 1:23Then, in a parable he illustrated the lesson he desired to teach them.
- 1:29Which of you, he said, shall have a friend, and shall go
- 1:30unto him at midnight and say unto him, friend, lend me three loaves.
- 1:34For a friend of mine in his journey has come to me, and
- 1:37I have nothing to set before him. And he from within shall answer and
- 1:41say, trouble me not. The door is now shut, and my children
- 1:44are with me in bed. I cannot rise and give thee I say unto
- 1:48you, though he will not rise and give him because he is his friend.
- 1:52Yet because of his importunity, he will rise and give him as many
- 1:55as he needeth. Here Christ represents the petitioner as asking that he may give
- 2:00again. He must obtain the bread, else he cannot supply the necessities of
- 2:05a weary belated wayfarer. Though his neighbor is unwilling to be troubled, he
- 2:08will not desist his pleading. His friend must be relieved, and at last
- 2:13his importunity is rewarded. His wants are supplied. In like manner, The
- 2:17disciples were to seek blessings from God in the feeding of the multitude, and
- 2:22in the Sermon on the Bread from Heaven. Christ had opened to them their
- 2:24work as his representatives. They were to give the bread of life to the
- 2:29people. He who had appointed their work, saw how often their faith would
- 2:32be tried. Often they would be thrown into unexpected positions and would realize their
- 2:38human insufficiency. Souls that were hungering for the bread of life would come to
- 2:43them, and they would feel themselves to be destitute and helpless. They must
- 2:46receive spiritual food or they would have nothing to impart. But they were not
- 2:51to turn one soul away unfed. Christ directs them to the source of supply.
- 2:57The men whose friend came to him for entertainment, even at the unseasonable
- 3:00hour of midnight, did not turn him away. He had nothing to said
- 3:04before him, but he went to one who had food and pressed his request
- 3:07until the neighbor supplied his need, and would not God, who had set
- 3:10his servants to feed the hungry, supply their need for his own work.
- 3:15But the selfish neighbor in the parable does not represent the character of God.
- 3:19The lesson is drawn not by comparison, but by contrast. A selfish man
- 3:23were grant an urgent request in order to rid himself of one who disturbs his
- 3:28rest. But God delights to give. He is full of compassion, and
- 3:30he longs to grant the requests of those who come unto him. In faith.
- 3:36He gives to us that we may minister to others and thus become like
- 3:38himself. Christ declares, ask, and it shall be given. You seekin
- 3:44ye shall find knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every
- 3:47one that asketh receiveth, and he that seeketh findeth. Unto him that knocketh,
- 3:51it shall be opened. The Savior continues. If a son shall ask
- 3:55bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a
- 3:58stone? Or if he asks a fish, will he for a fish give
- 4:00him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer
- 4:04to him a scorpion? If ye, then, being evil, know how
- 4:08to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father
- 4:12give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him. In order to strengthen our
- 4:15confidence in God, Christ teaches us to address him by a new name,
- 4:19a name entwined with the dearest associations of the human heart. He gives us
- 4:25the privilege of calling the infinite God our father. This name, spoken to
- 4:30him and of him, is a sign of our love and trust toward him,
- 4:31in a pledge of his regard and relationship to us, spoken when asking
- 4:36his favor or blessing. It is his music in his ears that we might
- 4:41not think it presumption to call him by this name. He has repeated it
- 4:45again and again. He desires us to become familiar with the appellation. God
- 4:50regards us as his children. He has redeemed us out of the careless world
- 4:55and has chosen us to become members of the royal family, sons and daughters
- 4:59of the heavenly King. He invites us to trust in Him, with the
- 5:02trust deeper and stronger than that of a child in his earthly father. Parents
- 5:08love their children, but the love of God is larger, broader, deeper
- 5:12than human love can possibly be. It is immeasurable. Then if earthly parents
- 5:16know how to give good gifts to their children, how much more shall our
- 5:19Father in Heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him. Christ's lessons
- 5:25in regard to prayer should be carefully considered. There is a divine science in
- 5:30prayer, and his illustration brings to view principles that all need to understand.
- 5:34He shows what is the true spirit of prayer. He teaches the necessity of
- 5:39perseverance in presenting our requests to God, and assures us of his willingness to
- 5:43hear and answer prayer. Our prayers are not to be a selfish asking merely
- 5:47for our own benefit. We are to ask that we may give the principle
- 5:53of Christ's life must be the principle of our lives for their sakes. He
- 5:58said, speaking of his disciples, I sanctify myself that they also might be
- 6:01sanctified. This same devotion, this same self sacrifice, this same subjection to
- 6:08the claims of the Word of God that were manifest in Christ, must be
- 6:12seen in his servants. Our mission to the world is not to serve or
- 6:15please ourselves. We are to glorify God by cooperating with him to save sinners.
- 6:20We are to ask blessings from God that we may communicate to others.
- 6:25The capacity for receiving is preserved only by imparting. We cannot continue to receive
- 6:30heavenly treasure without communicating to those around us. In the parable, the petitioner
- 6:35was again and again repulsed, but he did not relinquish his purpose. So
- 6:40our prayers do not always seem to receive an immediate answer. But Christ teaches
- 6:44that we should not cease to pray. Prayer is not to work any change
- 6:47in God. It is to bring us into harmony with God. When we
- 6:51make request of him, he may see that it is necessary for us to
- 6:55search our hearts and repent of sin. Therefore He takes us through tests and
- 7:00trial. He brings us through humiliation that we may see what hinders the working
- 7:03of His Holy Spirit through us. There are conditions to the fulfillment of God's
- 7:09promises, and prayer can never take the place of duty. If ye love
- 7:13me, Christ says, keep my commendments. He that hath my commendments and
- 7:16keepeth them. He it is that loveth me, and he that loveth me
- 7:19shall be loved of my Father. And I will love him and will manifest
- 7:24myself to him. Those who bring their petitions to God claiming his promise,
- 7:29while they do not comply with the conditions, insult Jehovah. They bring the
- 7:32name of Christ as their authority for the fulfillment of the promise, but they
- 7:36do not those things that would show faith in Christ and love for him.
- 7:42Many are forfeiting the condition of acceptance with the Father. We need to examine
- 7:46closely the deed of trust wherewith we approach God. If we are disobedient,
- 7:50we bring to the Lord a note to be cashed when we have not fulfilled
- 7:53the conditions that would make it payable to us. We present to God his
- 7:57promises and ask him to fulfill them, when by deday doing so he would
- 8:00dishonor his own name. The promise is, if ye abide in Me and
- 8:05my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it
- 8:07should be done unto you. And John declares hereby we do know that we
- 8:11know him if we keep his commandments. He that saith I know him and
- 8:15keepeth not his commandments is a liar, And the truth is not in him.
- 8:18But whoso keepeth his word in him verily is the love of God perfected.
- 8:24One of Christ's last commands to his disciples was love one another as I
- 8:28have loved you. Do we obey this command? Or are we indulging in
- 8:31un christ like traits of character? If we have in any way grieved or
- 8:35wounded others, it is our duty to confess our fault and seek for reconciliation.
- 8:39This is an essential preparation that we may come before God in faith to
- 8:43ask his blessing. There is another matter, too often neglected by those who
- 8:48seek the Lord in prayer. Have you been honest with God? By the
- 8:52prophet Malachi, the Lord declares, even from the days of your father's you
- 8:56are gone away from mine ordinances and have not kept them. Return unto me,
- 9:01and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of Hosts. But
- 9:05ye say wherein shall we return? Will a man rob God? Yet ye
- 9:09have robbed me? But ye say wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes
- 9:13and offerings? As the giver of every blessing, God claims a certain portion
- 9:18of all we possess. This is his provision to sustain the preaching of the
- 9:24Gospel, and by making this return to God we are to show our appreciation
- 9:28of his gifts. But if we withhold from him that which is his own,
- 9:31how can we claim his blessing? If we are unfaithful stewards of earthly
- 9:35things, how can we expect him to entrust us with the things of heaven.
- 9:39It may be that here is the secret of unanswered prayer. But the
- 9:45Lord, in his great mercy, is ready to forgive. And he says,
- 9:48bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meet
- 9:50in mine house, and prove me now herewith If I will not open you
- 9:56the windows of heaven and pour you out of blessing, that there shall not
- 9:58be room enough to to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for
- 10:03your sakes. And he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground. Neither
- 10:05shall your vine cast your fruit before the time in the field. And all
- 10:09nations shall call you blessed, for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith
- 10:15the Lord of hosts. So it is with every other one of God's requirements.
- 10:18All his gifts are promised on condition of obedience. God has a heaven
- 10:24full of blessings for those who will cooperate with him. All who obey him
- 10:28may with confidence claim the fulfillment of his promises. But we must show a
- 10:31firm, undeviating trust in God. Often he delays to answer us in order
- 10:37to try our faith or test the genuineness of our desire. Having asked according
- 10:41to his word, we should believe his promise and press our petitions with a
- 10:45determination that will not be denied. God does not say, ask once,
- 10:50and ye shall receive. He bids us ask unwearyingly persist in prayer. Persistent
- 10:56asking brings the petitioner into a more earnest addayitude and gives him an increased desire
- 11:01to receive the things for which he asks. Christ said to Martha the Grave
- 11:05of Lazarus, if thou wouldst believe, thou should see the glory of God.
- 11:11But many have not a living faith. This is why they do not
- 11:13see more of the power of God. Their weakness is the result of their
- 11:18unbelief. They have more faith in their own working than in the working of
- 11:22God. For them they take themselves into their own keeping. They plan and
- 11:26devise, but pray little, and have little real trust in God. They
- 11:31think they have faith, but it is only the impulse of the moment.
- 11:35Failing to realize their own need or God's willingness to give, they do not
- 11:39persevere in keeping their requests before the Lord. Our prayers are to be as
- 11:45earnest and persistent as was the petition of the needy friend who ask for the
- 11:48loaves at midnight. The more earnestly and steadfastly we ask, the closer will
- 11:52be our spiritual union with Christ. We shall receive increased blessings because we have
- 11:58increased faith. Our part is to pray and believe, watch unto prayer,
- 12:03watch and co operate with the prayer hearing God. Bear in mind that we
- 12:07are laborers together with God. Speak and act in harmony with your prayers.
- 12:13It will make an infinite difference with you whether trials to prove your faith to
- 12:16be genuine or show that your prayers are only a form. When perplexities arise
- 12:20and difficulties confront you look not for help to humanity, trust all with God.
- 12:26The practice of telling our difficulties to others only makes us weak and brings
- 12:31no strength to them. It lays upon them the burden of our spiritual infirmities,
- 12:35which they cannot relieve. We seek the strength of erring finite man,
- 12:39when we might have the strength of the unerring, infinite God. You need
- 12:43not to go to the ends of the earth for wisdom, for God is
- 12:46near. It is not the capabilities you now possess, or ever will have,
- 12:50that will give you success. It is that which the Lord can do
- 12:54for you. We need to have far less confidence in what man can do,
- 12:58and far more confidence in what God can do. For every believing soul,
- 13:03He longs to have you reach after him by faith. He longs to
- 13:07give you understanding in temporal as well as in spiritual matters. He can sharpen
- 13:11the intellect he can give tact and skill. Put your talents into the work.
- 13:16Ask God for wisdom and it will be given. You. Take the
- 13:20word of Christ as your assurance. Has He not invited you to come to
- 13:24him? Never allow yourself to talk in a hopeless, discouraged way. If
- 13:28you do, you will lose much By looking at appearances and complaining when difficulties
- 13:33and pressure come. You give evidence of a sickly enfeebled faith. Talk and
- 13:37act as if your faith was invincible. The Lord is rich in resources,
- 13:41He owns the world. Look heavenward in faith. Look to him who has
- 13:46light and power and efficiency. There is in genuine faith a buoyancy, a
- 13:52steadfastness of principle, and affixedness of purpose that neither time nor toil can weaken.
- 13:58Even the youth shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall
- 14:01utterly fall. But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.
- 14:05They shall man up with wings as eagles. They shall run and not be
- 14:09weary, and they shall walk and not faint. There are many who long
- 14:13to help others, but they feel that they have no spiritual strength or light
- 14:18to impart. Let them present their petitions at the Throne of Grace. Plead
- 14:22for the Holy Spirit. God stands back of every promise he has made.
- 14:26With your Bible in your hands. Say I have done as thou hast said.
- 14:31I present thy promise, Ask and it shall be given. You Seek
- 14:35and ye shall find. Knock and it shall be opened unto you. We
- 14:37must not only pray in Christ's name, but by the inspiration of the Holy
- 14:41Spirit. This explains what is meant when it is said that the Spirit maketh
- 14:46intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Such prayer. God delights
- 14:50to answer when with earnestness and intensity we breathe a prayer in the name of
- 14:56Christ. There is in that very intensity a pledge from God that He is
- 15:00about to answer our prayer exceedingly abundantly, above all that we ask or think.
- 15:03Christ has said, what things soever ye desire, when ye pray,
- 15:07believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. Whatsoever ye shall
- 15:11ask in my name, that I will do that the Father may be glorified
- 15:15in the sun. And the beloved John, under the inspiration of the Holy
- 15:18Spirit, speaks with great plainness and assurance. If we ask anything according to
- 15:24his will, he heareth us. And if we know that he hear us
- 15:28whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of
- 15:31him. Then press your petition to the Father in the name of Jesus.
- 15:35God will honor that name. The rainbow round about the throne is an assurance
- 15:41that God is true, that in him is no variableness, neither shadow of
- 15:45turning. We have sinned against Him and are undeserving of his favor. Yet
- 15:50He himself has put into our lips that most wonderful of Please do not abhor
- 15:54us for thy name's sake. Do not disgrace the throne of Thy glory.
- 15:58Remember, break not thy covenant with us. When we come to him confessing
- 16:03our unworthiness and sin. He has pledged himself to give heed to our cry.
- 16:08The honor of his throne is staked for the fulfillment of his word.
- 16:11Unto us. Like Aaron, who symbolize Christ, our Savior bears the names
- 16:18of all his people on his heart. In the holy Place, our great
- 16:21High Priest remembers all the words by which he has encouraged us to trust.
- 16:26He is ever mindful of his covenant. All who seek of him shall find.
- 16:30All who knocked will have the door open to them. The excuse will
- 16:34not be made trouble me not. The door is closed. I do not
- 16:37wish to open it. Never will one be told I cannot help you.
- 16:42Those who beg at midnight for loaves to feed the hungry souls will be successful
- 16:47in the parable. He who asks bread for the stranger receives as many as
- 16:51he needeth. And in what measure will God impart to us that we may
- 16:55impart to others according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Angels are
- 17:00watching with intense interest to see how man is dealing with his fellow men.
- 17:04When they see one manifest christ like sympathy for the erring, they press to
- 17:07his side and bring to his remembrance words to speak that will be as the
- 17:11bread of life to the soul. So God shall supply all your need according
- 17:15to His riches and glory. By Christ Jesus, your testimony in its genuineness
- 17:21and reality, He will make powerful in the power of the life to come.
- 17:25The word of the Lord will be your mouth as truth and righteousness.
- 17:27Personal effort for others should be preceded by much secret prayer, for it requires
- 17:33great wisdom to understand the science of saving souls. Before communicating with men,
- 17:38commune with Christ at the throne of heavenly grace. Obtain a preparation for ministering
- 17:44to the people. Let your heart break for the longing it has for God.
- 17:48For the living God, the life of Christ has shown what humanity can
- 17:52do by being partaker of the divine nature. All that Christ received from God.
- 17:56We two may have, then ask and receive with the persevering faith of
- 18:00Jacob, with the unyielding persistence of Elijah, claim for yourself all that God
- 18:04has promised. Let the glorious conceptions of God possess your mind. Let your
- 18:11life be knit by hidden links to the life of Jesus. He who commanded
- 18:15the light to shine out of darkness, is willing to shine in your heart,
- 18:18to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God. In
- 18:21the face of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit will take the things of God
- 18:25and show them unto you, conveying them as a living power into the obedient
- 18:29heart. Christ will lead you to the threshold of the infinite. You may
- 18:33behold the glory beyond the veil, and reveal to men the sufficiency of Him
- 18:37whoever liveth to make intercession for us. End of Chapter twelve.
