- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn German with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 120 — can you believe it? Lucas: I know. And today we're continuing our medical theme, but now we're actually at the doctor's office describing symptoms. Luna: Okay good, because last time we learned how to make an appointment. Now I need to know what to say when the doctor asks me what's wrong. Lucas: Exactly. So let's start with the most common one: 'I have a fever.' In German, that's 'Ich habe Fieber.' Luna: Ich habe Fieber. Lucas: Perfect. Notice the word 'Fieber' sounds a lot like English 'fever.' Luna: Yeah, that one's easy. Ich habe Fieber. Lucas: Good. Now if you have a cough, you say 'Ich habe Husten.' Luna: Ich habe Husten. Husten sounds like 'hoosten' — is that right? Lucas: Close. The 'u' is a short 'oo' sound. Listen: Husten. Luna: Husten. Ich habe Husten. Lucas: Great. And if your nose is running — 'Ich habe Schnupfen.' Luna: Schnupfen. That's a fun word. Schnupfen. Lucas: Yeah, it's like 'schnup' and then 'fen.' Ich habe Schnupfen. Luna: Ich habe Schnupfen. So if I have all three, I could say 'Ich habe Fieber, Husten und Schnupfen.' Lucas: Exactly. And add sore throat: 'Ich habe Halsschmerzen.' Luna: Halsschmerzen. That's throat pain, right? Hals is throat, Schmerzen is pain. Lucas: Right. So 'Ich habe Halsschmerzen.' Luna: Ich habe Halsschmerzen. Lucas: Now the doctor might ask 'Tut es hier weh?' — 'Does it hurt here?' And they'll point to a spot. Luna: Tut es hier weh? So if they point to my throat, I can say 'Ja, hier tut es weh.' Lucas: Perfect. Or you can just say 'Ja, das tut weh.' Let's practice a small dialogue. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. Lucas: I'll be the doctor. 'Guten Tag, was fehlt Ihnen?' Luna: Ich habe Fieber, Husten und Halsschmerzen. Lucas: Und tut es hier weh? Luna: Ja, hier tut es weh. Lucas: Sehr gut, Luna. That was natural. Luna: Thanks. I can imagine actually using these phrases. Lucas: And if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with your German, these free episodes stay ad-free thanks to listener support.
