That's not an exaggeration — the number I've seen is 2,100. And they're connected to dedicated fiber backhaul. The result is that during a full-capacity event — say 70,000 people — each fan gets a consistent connection because the network micro-cells handle handoffs before you even notice congestion. Luna: So the spinner of death becomes a thing of the past for fans at SoFi. Lucas: Exactly. But the more interesting part is what happens beyond the fan experience. The same network supports the venue's operations. Concession registers, security cameras, ticketing scanners — all running on the same 5G backbone, but segmented so that operations traffic doesn't get squeezed out by fan TikTok uploads. Luna: That's the network slicing concept we've talked about on the show before. But in practice, how much does that matter for the venue's bottom line? Lucas: A lot. SoFi's concession system is fully mobile — there are no fixed point of sale terminals. Staff carry handheld devices that process payments over the 5G network. When a big play happens, they can move into the aisles and take orders, which cuts average wait time from about 12 minutes to under 4 minutes. Luna: That's huge for revenue per head. Faster service means more sales per event. Luna: And that's just concessions. What about the security side? Lucas: Security cameras are now high-definition and wireless, so they can be repositioned for different events. A concert layout might need cameras in different spots than a football game. Madison Square Garden, for example, was built in 1968. Retrofitting that kind of infrastructure is a different challenge. Lucas: It is. But the industry is moving. The NFL has actually mandated that all teams upgrade their in-stadium connectivity to 5G by 2027. That's a massive capital spend — we're talking hundreds of millions across the league. And it's not just the NFL. The Premier League is looking at similar requirements for stadiums like Old Trafford and Wembley. Luna: Those older venues often have concrete and steel structures that block signal. So 5G's use of higher frequencies — millimeter wave — seems counterintuitive for stadiums, doesn't it? Lucas: It does, which is why the solution isn't just one big tower outside the stadium. It's the opposite — many tiny cells placed every 50 feet or so inside. Millimeter wave has terrible penetration, but it has massive capacity. In a stadium, you want lots of capacity and you can place antennas line of sight to the seats. It's actually a perfect use case. Luna: Right. You're not trying to cover a city. You're covering a contained space with known geometry and high density. Lucas: Exactly. And the same principle applies to other venue types — concert halls, convention centers, even theme parks. Disney has been doing something similar at its parks, though they use a mix of Wi-Fi and 5G. Luna: I want to ask about the economics. For a venue like SoFi, which cost over five billion dollars to build, the 5G infrastructure is a drop in the bucket. But for a mid-tier stadium, say a 30,000-seat MLS or college stadium, is the ROI there? Lucas: It's tighter, but the math still works if you factor in operational efficiencies. A mid-tier stadium might spend two to three million on a das plus-5G retrofit. The added concession revenue alone — from faster service and better data on fan behavior — can pay that back in two to three seasons. And that's before you count sponsorship opportunities. Carriers will sometimes subsidize the build in exchange for exclusive branding rights. Luna: So the carriers see these venues as anchor tenants for their 5G networks. They get a showcase for the technology, plus a captive audience of affluent consumers. Lucas: Exactly. And they can test network slicing in a real environment. For instance, during the Super Bowl at SoFi in 2022, Verizon ran a dedicated slice for the broadcast trucks. That meant the video feeds from the field cameras had guaranteed latency of under 20 milliseconds, while fans in the stands were using a different slice for social media. Luna: That's the kind of differentiation that 5G promises — and that's actually happening. Not in a lab, but at scale. Lucas: Right. The individual-level targeting happens only if the fan opts in through the venue app. But the network itself can collect aggregate foot traffic patterns — which concourses are crowded, which restrooms have lines — without identifying individuals. Luna: That's a smart use of the infrastructure. But it does require a level of digital trust from fans. Lucas: Absolutely. And that's why transparency matters. SoFi, for example, publishes its data practices and allows fans to see what data is being collected through a privacy dashboard in the app. It's not perfect, but it's a step in the right direction.
