Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The Vital Envelope Is the First Line of Defense Against Illness

- 0:00Most people are not aware of the vital envelope, sometimes called
- 0:04the aura, that surrounds their physical body.
- 0:09Those who experience this vital envelope are sensitive on the
- 0:12vital plane. They are frequently ridiculed
- 0:15for speaking about the aura which they can feel or even
- 0:19observe in others. Western science decided to find
- 0:24a way to test the long proclaimed existence of the
- 0:27aura. Tests were developed to capture
- 0:30the electromagnetic field that surrounds the body.
- 0:34Eventually, a technique called Curlian photography was devised
- 0:38that could actually photograph this electromagnetic field.
- 0:44An individual who had no experience or belief one way or
- 0:48the other about the existence of the aura came into contact with
- 0:52a researcher at Jipmer Hospital in Pondicherry, India some years
- 0:56ago. This researcher was studying
- 0:59cancer and the vibratory pattern it gave off and how it could be
- 1:04cured by projecting onto the mice he was using for his
- 1:08experiments. The vibratory pattern given off
- 1:11by healthy mice. One of the tools he used was
- 1:15curly in photography. After describing his work to the
- 1:19visitor and showing a series of photographs of healthy mice, the
- 1:24cancerous mice and their subsequent recovery, he offered
- 1:28to show the visitor how the Krellian photography actually
- 1:31worked. He took photographs of 2 stones.
- 1:361 was an ordinary stone, the other was a stone that had been
- 1:40in an active temple for potentially hundreds of years.
- 1:44The ordinary stone had virtually no aura surrounding it, while
- 1:48the temple stone had a strong field of radiance exuding from
- 1:52it. The researcher then went further
- 1:55and asked the visitor to extend his hand.
- 1:58He photographed the hand and showed the result of a
- 2:01noticeable but rather diffused field surrounding it.
- 2:06Then he asked the visitor to chant some mantras.
- 2:09Afterwards, he photographed the hand once again.
- 2:13This time the aura was bright and radiant and extended far
- 2:17beyond the former photographed field.
- 2:21Even for those who have not had personal insight or experience
- 2:25about the existence of this vital envelope, there are
- 2:28several significant points here. First, the aura exists.
- 2:34Second, it can be augmented through focus practice such as
- 2:38long standing prayer, the temple rock, or through use of mantras.
- 2:44The visitors experience, those who have practiced to gain a
- 2:49sensitive awareness, can feel the protective role that this
- 2:52vital envelope plays and the way it can be supported to reject
- 2:57the vibrations of illness that try to attack the physical body,
- 3:01as Sri Aurobindo recounts here. Sri Aurobindo notes quote
- 3:08attacks of illness are attacks of the lower nature or of
- 3:11adverse forces taking advantage of some weakness, opening or
- 3:15response in the nature. Like all other things that come
- 3:20and have got to be thrown away, they come from outside.
- 3:24If one can feel them so coming and get the strength and the
- 3:28habit to throw them away before they can enter the body, then
- 3:33one can remain free from illness even when the attack seems to
- 3:38rise from within. That means only that it has not
- 3:41been detected before it entered the subconscient.
- 3:45Once in the subconscient, the force that brought it rouses it
- 3:49from there sooner or later, and it invades the system.
- 3:54When you feel it just after it has entered, it is because,
- 3:58though it came direct and not through the subconscient, yet
- 4:02you could not detect it while it was still outside.
- 4:06Very often it arrives like that, frontally or more often
- 4:10tangentially from the side, direct, forcing its way through
- 4:15the subtle vital envelope which is our main armor of defence.
- 4:19But it can be stopped there in the envelope itself, before it
- 4:23penetrates the physical body. Then one may feel some effect,
- 4:28for instance feverishness or a tendency to cold, but there is
- 4:34not the full invasion of the malady.
- 4:37If it can be stopped earlier, or if the vital envelope of itself
- 4:41resists and remains strong, vigorous and intact, then there
- 4:46is no illness. The attack produces no physical
- 4:50effect and leaves no trace. End Quote.
