  in and around the Norfolk area where I live.

  She very kindly agreed to take me out to an undisclosed

  location. I had no idea where I was going to

  go until I arrived. It was just me and Jules

  and she wanted to give me the real deal of what

  an actual paranormal investigation is like. No

  sensational TV -style shocks, no horror story

  poltergeists, just an actual paranormal investigation

  in which you, my dear, dear listeners, my dear

  explorers, are coming along with me. So, if you

  This is what it's actually like. Jules was really

  keen to impress upon me that most of the time

  when she does these paranormal investigations

  it's really boring nothing happens they'll set

  all their equipment up and it will be excused

  upon dead but what you're about to hear is what
• 1:59
  happened on the night with me and Jules it's
• 2:02
  subtle but things definitely happen and I would
• 2:05

  up, because where me and Jules went on this investigation

  is left unlocked that night. Jules has asked

  me to keep the location anonymous. So in order

  we go. So I'm turning onto Royal Main Road and

  then coming off. Now, okay, I'm just, I'm going

  down the lane here and it's a small country track.

  Just past the sign saying three quarters of a

  mile, there's a historic church. I wonder if
• 3:03
  that's where we might be going. I don't know,
• 3:06
  but I'm following this, this lane. see where
• 3:10
  it goes. Jules has arranged to meet me at coordinates.
• 3:14
  She sent me the three word coordinates so I've
• 3:17
  looked that up online. I've put into my google
• 3:20
  maps and that's now taking me there and she's
• 3:22
  already messaged me. Jules has messaged me to
• 3:25
  tell me that she is already at the rendezvous
• 3:28
  location. It is the 9th of November. It is pitch
• 3:33
  black. I am driving down this lane and there
• 3:36
  are tall English oak trees which have sprung
• 3:38
  up from the hedges which line the lane I find
• 3:41
  myself driving down. It is in the depths of autumn,
• 3:45
  the leaves have fallen, acorns scatter the road.
• 3:49
  As I drive down this lane, it's almost as if
• 3:51
  I'm driving down a tunnel, this tunnel created
• 3:54
  by these oak trees which are looming above me,
• 3:57
  silhouetted against the light of the moon which
• 4:00
  is scattered by the clouds. It is Remembrance
• 4:03
  Sunday. For many that means remembering those
• 4:06
  who have come before us, who have fought in conflict
• 4:09
  and served in the military service. I'm reminded
• 4:12
  that this time last year, I was stood up in front
• 4:15
  of a hall full of people, bringing messages through
• 4:18
  on platform and participating in the Remembrance
• 4:21
  Sunday service. And fast forward a year, I'm
• 4:25
  about to go on a ghost hunt on a paranormal investigation.
• 4:30
  I turn a corner on this lane and I find Joel's
• 4:33
  car waiting for me. The investigation is about
• 4:37
  to begin. Here she is. Okay, I'm here. So I'm
• 4:44
  going to park up behind her. Here we go. Oh my
• 4:49
  word. I'm so excited. I'm so excited. Hello.

  Oh, I'm good. Yeah, I'm looking forward to this.

  We say our hellos and I get Jules mic'd up as

  soon as I can. Of course, at this stage, I have
• 5:07
  no idea that Jules' microphone is about to record
• 5:10
  about three minutes and then just turn off for
• 5:13
  the whole night. At the end of the evening, we
• 5:15
  had about two and a half hours of audio. But
• 5:17
  when she sent it to me, it was just two and a
• 5:19
  half hours of nothing. So frustrating. So because
• 5:24
  of that, in the parts of this episode where Jaws'
• 5:27
  audio is not very clear, I'm going to narrate
• 5:30
  it. It's not because I want to take over or smother
• 5:33
  Jaws' participation. It's purely so that you
• 5:36
  can hear what was going on and what was being
• 5:39
  said. Right, let's get you mic'd up as well then.

  Hello, this is a test of me recording this. It's

  so frustrating that yours didn't work that night,
• 5:58
  but... Hey, we have what we have and actually

  what we have is pretty interesting. So let's
• 6:04
  get started. Let's set a scene. We are at the
• 6:06
  bottom of this track. This track which leads
• 6:10
  to this 14th century church, the sign of which
• 6:14
  I passed on my way to meet Jules. We are the
• 6:17
  only people for miles around. Although you can
• 6:20
  hear the distant hum in the background of the
• 6:23
  North Norwich bypass. It's pitch black. It's
• 6:26
  coming up to 8 p .m. And Jules invites me to
• 6:29
  hold her hand to start a protection ceremony.
• 6:37
  We ask our guides and our guardian angels to
• 6:46
  step forward and offer us protection for the
• 6:48
  entirety of this evening. We're asking that you
• 6:52
  assist us in the communication with spirit while
• 6:54
  we are on this space. Those spirits who are here
• 6:59
  who wish to communicate with us, we ask that
• 7:01
  you wish us no harm as we wish you no harm. Thank
• 7:05
  you. Marvellous. You happy with that? Good. Armed
• 7:09
  with our Wellington boots, woolly hats and newly
• 7:12
  purchased torches, we start walking up the lane.

  So what is here? Where are we going? Where are
• 7:19
  we going? We are going to the **** Church. ****
• 7:22
  Church. OK, it's just outside of Norwich. In
• 7:35
  case you didn't hear what Jules said there, this
• 7:38
  village used to be a plague village. Now this
• 7:41
  fact is news to me. Obviously I know about the
• 7:43
  plague and how it ran rampant throughout England
• 7:46
  in the 13, 14, 15 and 1600s. However, to me,
• 7:50
  this village is a fairly modern village. Not
• 7:53
  a very pretty village, rather a sterile row of
• 7:57
  houses and shops lining the street or the main
• 8:00
  road into the city of Norwich. But the original
• 8:03
  village actually, at one stage, surrounded the
• 8:06
  church that we are now walking to. She explains
• 8:10
  to me that there are many villages like this,
• 8:13
  and actually this answers a question I have had
• 8:15
  for many years. I've lived in Norfolk now for
• 8:17
  about 11 years. And you will drive through the
• 8:19
  countryside and just see a random church. And
• 8:21
  these churches are not small. Like, a large,
• 8:24
  random church in the middle of farmland. And
• 8:26
  you think, what? Where have the people gone?
• 8:29
  Like, why was there a church here? and George
• 8:32
  explains that when the Black Death ran through
• 8:34
  England, entire villages were wiped off the face
• 8:39
  of the earth. But the village that I know was
• 8:43
  not where it is now, it once surrounded this
• 8:46
  church which we are walking to now. We're going
• 8:52
  along a lane and the oak tree above is curved
• 8:57
  over making this beautifully atmospheric passageway
• 9:00
  for us. This is beautiful. I've never been here
• 9:06
  before and I asked Jules if this is a ruined
• 9:08
  church or if it is open. She explains to me that
• 9:11
  this church is intact but it is not used for
• 9:14
  active worship. It is owned and maintained by
• 9:17
  the Norfolk Churches Trust who keep it open and
• 9:19
  keep it in good condition. And as we finally
• 9:22
  approach the gate to the church I notice a sign
• 9:26
  on the side of the gate. So area under surveillance.
• 9:29
  Norfolk Police, this location is being actively
• 9:31
  monitored for anti -social behaviour, littering
• 9:34
  and fly -tiffing. Yep, we don't tend to be anti
• 9:36
  -social. No. We close the gate behind us and
• 9:39
  turn to look at the side of the church. Jules
• 9:43
  takes her torch out to shine points of the church
• 9:46
  which might be of interest to me. But this is
• 9:51
  the beautiful **** church. Wow. Isn't it gorgeous?
• 9:56
  And unlike most of the churches in Norfolk, this
• 9:59
  one is a rectangular spire, or tower rather.
• 10:04
  A lot of them are known, the real old ones are
• 10:07
  known for being round. Yeah, so an Anglo -Saxon
• 10:11
  church will have a round tower and some of the
• 10:14
  earlier Norman churches will have round towers
• 10:16
  as well. This particular church is a 14th century
• 10:20
  church. So we've got the square tower. But we've
• 10:25
  still got these absolutely gorgeous, they're
• 10:27
  called OG shapes. But we've then got the Gothic
• 10:32
  perpendicular architecture up here as well. That
• 10:37
  big rumble in the background, that's because
• 10:39
  we're fairly close to Norwich Airport. Evening
• 10:43
  flight to Amsterdam probably rumbling away. No
• 10:46
  doubt. Lucky them. Instead we are in balmy Norfolk.
• 10:54
  And is that a sundial above the entrance? It
• 10:57
  is, yeah. Wow, that's lovely. It's gorgeous,
• 11:00
  isn't it? Yeah. I mean, I absolutely love this
• 11:03
  church. I think it is fabulous. I've done a couple
• 11:07
  of investigations here. I've encountered one
• 11:10
  particular spirit in this place a couple of times.
• 11:14
  So we'll see if he's here tonight. I don't feel
• 11:16
  him at the moment. But we shall see. Is he friendly?
• 11:20
  Yeah. He is. He's very friendly. Contrary to
• 11:24
  popular opinion, actually quite a few spirits
• 11:27
  are friendly. We take a few steps towards the
• 11:31
  door and hope that it's been left open for us.

  Let's see if it's open. Sometimes they do leave
• 11:37
  it open. Sometimes they do not. And it is. It's
• 11:42
  open. Yeah, it normally is left open all the
• 11:44
  time. Which is one of the wonderful things about
• 11:46
  this place, I think. And it has that smell. It
• 11:50
  has that churchy smell, doesn't it? That wonderful
• 11:53
  mustard smell. Yeah. It's good, isn't it? So,
• 11:59
  welcome back to the f***ing church. How wonderful.

  Isn't it gorgeous? Sadly disused, but at least
• 12:08
  it is... Still furnished. Kept alive, yeah. Yes,
• 12:13
  still furnished. So we have a lot to thank them
• 12:15
  for. Amazing work. Jules explains that since
• 12:20
  she did her first investigation here the building
• 12:22
  has received some sympathetic restoration. Only
• 12:25
  some light blastering and in one part above the
• 12:28
  door unfortunately water has damaged some of
• 12:31
  that. As you step into the body of the church
• 12:33
  there are lines of pews facing the altar. It's
• 12:36
  a simple church but as you can hear the walls
• 12:38
  are thick and the sense of atmosphere envelops
• 12:42
  you. The church is split into two parts. You've
• 12:45
  got the old original 14th century church and
• 12:49
  then you've got the Victorian extension which
• 12:51
  holds the altar. There's a font in the corner
• 12:55
  of the old part of the church and just before
• 13:00
  the altar you can see where there would have
• 13:02
  once been a pulpit and just behind that there
• 13:05
  are some steps. I'm looking at stairs over there.
• 13:09
  Is that a staircase? They are actually blocked
• 13:11
  up. okay yeah so they would have gone to a um
• 13:16
  a tribune gallery i guess okay oh i see so it
• 13:19
  would have been double or tiered possibly maybe
• 13:22
  just a small little side room we explore the
• 13:26
  church some more and notice that the walls are
• 13:29
  peppered with old memorials These are almost
• 13:32
  akin to very ornate gravestones put into the
• 13:35
  plaster of the wall. Some of them are marble,
• 13:37
  some of them are stone. These are pointers that
• 13:40
  this church is pre -Reformation. The Reformation
• 13:44
  was a time in English history which was revolutionary.
• 13:47
  It witnessed the transformation of England from
• 13:51
  a Catholic country to a Protestant country. Henry
• 13:54
  VIII wanted his divorce from his first wife Catherine
• 13:57
  of Aragon, who in his eyes could not conceive
• 13:59
  him an heir. and so he wanted to marry a young
• 14:02
  woman, Amberlyn. Catherine of Aragon, being a
• 14:06
  Spanish princess, being a very good Catholic
• 14:08
  princess, the Pope would not annul his marriage
• 14:12
  to her, so he decided to follow the wave of Lutheranism
• 14:16
  that was sweeping through Germany and the lowlands,
• 14:19
  and become the head of his own church, the Church
• 14:23
  of England, which still prevails today over these
• 14:26
  lands. and when Jaws is talking about memorials
• 14:29
  on the walls these are not just simple wooden
• 14:32
  plaques these are grand marble almost very elaborate
• 14:38
  tombstones which have been sunk into the walls.
• 14:43
  You can tell you can tell us the pre -reformation
• 14:45
  actually because these are very reminiscent of
• 14:48
  what you might find in Italy or France, Catholic
• 14:52
  graveyards. Now that we are familiar with the
• 14:54
  church, it's time to start the investigation.

  So Jules has just opened up a big metal box with
• 15:03
  loads of gadgets and gizmos and she's handed
• 15:06
  me this plastic wand which has got LED lights
• 15:10
  green through to red. So what does this do Jules?
• 15:15
  Okay so this picks up electromagnetic frequency
• 15:18
  so for example if your mobile phone is switched
• 15:21
  on which is okay so you know if you put it near
• 15:25
  to be perfectly honest mine's still on as well
• 15:27
  so we need to switch our phones to some mines
• 15:30
  on airplane mode already yes i've done that already
• 15:32
  just now put this near my phone and you can see
• 15:34
  that the lights are going it's going on like
• 15:36
  a christmas tree yes the reds and everything
• 15:39
  yeah so christmas trees are fantastic At Christmas
• 15:43
  time, but not on investigations, absolutely not.
• 15:45
  So now switch that onto play mode and you can
• 15:49
  then see that that will die. That's calmed right
• 15:51
  down, yes. And just to confirm the microphones
• 15:56
  are not interfering with it, there's a little
• 15:58
  bit or there's a little bit. If you hold it right

  up to it. Right up to it, yes. So that is picking
• 16:04
  up that... electronic frequency as these are
• 16:07
  connecting to the mobile phone. So obviously
• 16:10
  we have to be aware of that when we're just taking
• 16:12
  our baseline readings. So what we do, if you
• 16:17
  take this side of the church, I will take this
• 16:19
  side, and we just sweep around with these. So
• 16:22
  I'd like to see you do a nice sweeping motion
• 16:25
  up and down, so sort of like from ground. upwards
• 16:28
  to just above head level. Okay. And that will
• 16:30
  tell us if there are any residual baseline EMF
• 16:33
  readings in the building. So if anything moves
• 16:35
  above the first green let you know or am I going
• 16:38
  to orange? If it flickers at all. Okay, if it
• 16:40
  flickers at all. Because then we will make a
• 16:41
  note of that. And just to confirm that this church
• 16:45
  is, let's say 14th century, the walls are going
• 16:49
  to be very thick. If there are any mobile phone
• 16:52
  antennas outside or if there are any electricity
• 16:55
  pylons would that affect things? If they were
• 16:58
  outside, then there is a chance that it could
• 17:01
  affect the reading. However, I can tell you now
• 17:04
  that there are no electricity pylons. There's
• 17:08
  nothing outside. Jaws makes an excellent point
• 17:13
  that if our phones were not on airplane mode,
• 17:16
  there would still be absolutely no signal. So
• 17:20
  I'm getting absolutely nothing. It's just a constant
• 17:22
  one green light on what I've got here. Jules
• 17:26
  is receiving the same baselines. Absolutely nothing
• 17:29
  is making the EMF meters flicker. So she asked
• 17:32
  me to place my EMF meter on the pulpit while
• 17:36
  she places hers on top of a bench where she has
• 17:39
  placed the rest of her equipment. From wherever
• 17:41
  we are in that church, we are able to see the
• 17:44
  green lights of those EMF meters. So wherever
• 17:46
  we are, we can always see when or if they flicker.
• 17:50
  Right, okay, what else do we have in the box
• 17:53
  of tricks? This is what is known as a laser grid.

  Okay. So if I switch this on. Yes. Oh wow, so

  this is like what builders use to get straight
• 18:03
  lines on the walls. Kind of, except we're not
• 18:05
  going to be building tonight. This little black
• 18:08
  box on a tripod, it emits a large red grid onto
• 18:12
  the surface or the wall or wherever it is pointed.

  And the idea there is that should there be any...
• 18:19
  movement, activity, etc. Then what you see is
• 18:23
  the laser grid bending, if you like. The same
• 18:25
  one we would do if we walked in front of it.

  Right, okay, yes. So you'd see shadows in front
• 18:30
  of the grid, so if I just... So I'm bending the
• 18:32
  light waves and... Basically, yeah. Okay. Jules

  places this device on the floor just before the
• 18:40
  altar. Lighten the altar up like some strange
• 18:43
  laser -red chessboard. Then we return to the
• 18:46
  bench to see what other gadgets can help us with
• 18:48
  our investigation. So this particular piece of
• 18:52
  equipment here is what's called an EM pump. Right.
• 18:55
  So what that does is the EMF that I was talking
• 18:59
  about with the meter, this pumps this out. So
• 19:03
  you quite often hear people on the TV say things
• 19:06
  like, oh, if there's anybody there, use our energy.
• 19:10
  I don't actually agree with that. I personally
• 19:12
  consider that is a bad thing to do because you're
• 19:16
  inviting any spirit presence to drain your energy.
• 19:20
  And that can happen. Whereas with something like
• 19:22
  this, this is giving out the energy, hopefully,
• 19:25
  to allow spirit to use. Now you're a sensitive
• 19:28
  human, aren't you? Well, I try to be. I think
• 19:31
  you succeed. So if I switch that on and hold
• 19:36
  it, so there's a little red light on the top
• 19:38
  there. So yeah, this little black box of chores
• 19:41
  is put into my hand. Vibrating ever so slightly.
• 19:45
  Yes. So that vibration is the inner workings
• 19:49
  of the box. But when I hold that, I feel like
• 19:52
  my body becomes almost electric. There's a heaviness.
• 19:55
  There's a heaviness to my arm. And it's not a
• 19:58
  light thing, but it's also not heavy. But there
• 20:01
  is a little heaviness. And you could feel like
• 20:03
  it would pull your arm down. Yeah, absolutely.

  It's an interesting feeling. Yes, it's unusual.

  Jules asked me to place the EMF meter onto Lafont

  and again we returned to her box of tricks. Right,
• 20:15
  what else should we get out of the goody box?

  There's loads here, this is loads. I know. Something
• 20:20
  else which we can use if we need to is this which
• 20:24
  is a temperature gauge. So this has got two functions.

  Suddenly we hear an unexpected bang. We look
• 20:33
  at each other in shock. Could this be our first
• 20:36
  contact was a ghost or spirit or something? Fireworks.

  Jaws delves into her box of goodies as she produces

  two motion -activated lights. any motion or anything
• 21:12
  passing by them they've got a small little sensor
• 21:15
  just on the top there in the center so and they've
• 21:19
  got a range of approximately two meters so we
• 21:22
  i can't trigger this off now then so you put
• 21:25
  two out one on the font by the emf meter and
• 21:28
  one on apu so let's see how close i can get without
• 21:32
  some about a meter away from it There we go.

  Oh, so I had to put my arm over it to actually
• 21:39
  turn that one off, okay? Yes, absolutely anything
• 21:52
  my soul everything yes anything yeah, she was
• 21:56
  about to tell me something which is really important
• 21:58
  for you to remember should mention as well is
• 22:01
  that absolutely every piece of equipment has
• 22:04
  either got brand new batteries in it or it's
• 22:06
  just been fully recharged. Any fan of horror
• 22:10
  films, paranormal investigations or spooky tales
• 22:12
  will know that apparently batteries drain in
• 22:16
  the presence of spirits and Jaws confirms that
• 22:18
  she has experienced this. This is why everything
• 22:21
  is either fully charged or has brand new batteries
• 22:25
  in it. And you've got two mobile phones. Yeah,
• 22:28
  so this one is the one which I use purely for
• 22:31
  investigation. The reason for that is because
• 22:33
  this one is not connected to the internet at
• 22:35
  all. It doesn't have a SIM card in it, so it
• 22:37
  has no internet connection. And this one, it
• 22:40
  has got several apps because there is an absolute
• 22:44
  plethora of apps out there which you can use
• 22:46
  these days for ghost hunting, spirit investigations
• 22:49
  and so on. However, I would always say to anybody,
• 22:54
  always use these things with caution. unless
• 22:58
  you know what you're doing these investigations
• 23:00
  can be dangerous and if you notice the um grid's
• 23:05
  gone off the grid has gone off so that is interesting
• 23:09
  because as i did say that was fully charged the
• 23:11
  light is still on i can see the red light on
• 23:13
  it but the grid has gone off yeah so the actual
• 23:17
  central laser there you can still just see on
• 23:19
  the trace view of the window could that be a
• 23:22
  setting no no setting okay Interesting. Okay,
• 23:30
  so something potentially. That's interesting
• 23:32
  already. I've been here for 20 minutes. I will
• 23:35
  narrate this next bit because the audio gets
• 23:37
  a bit quiet and a bit echoey. Jules reminds me
• 23:41
  that we have put our intention out to communicate
• 23:44
  and that this could be a sign of some form of
• 23:47
  communication. She then caveats that by saying
• 23:50
  that she doesn't actually feel like anyone's
• 23:52
  with her. The moment that she said that, she
• 23:55
  then corrected herself and said, Oh, actually,
• 23:58
  I can feel someone to my right. You just said
• 24:03
  that and as soon as you said that, I thought,
• 24:05
  I'm not so sure. I might be picking up on something,
• 24:10
  but I don't know what. OK, so I think now is
• 24:14
  a good time just to introduce ourselves as we've
• 24:16
  walked around in this space quite a bit. And
• 24:19
  actually, it's quite rude of us because we've
• 24:21
  come into somebody else's space here. Yeah. Joel

  starts by introducing myself and her to whoever

  or whatever is in the church. This is Matt. I

  love and space. We just want to find out maybe

  put several bits of equipment out. She then goes

  on to explain what each piece of equipment does

  and how to interact with it. Over here we've

  got a green light. There's another green light

  over there. And if you walk close to those, what

  that does is that just makes more light. And

  I'm sure all of this technology is very strange

  to me. Suddenly Jules hears something. Did you

  just hear that rustling? No. I just heard something.

  It sounded like it rustled. Over here. You know,

  I was focusing on the sounds the EMF meter's
• 25:26
  making. Yeah, I just heard something rustle right
• 25:28
  over there. It sounded like if a lady's wearing
• 25:32
  long skirts and the skirt brushes against the
• 25:35
  floor. We pause to listen some more. But if that
• 25:40
  was you that just made that noise, please do
