- 0:00We are cultivate cultivate cultivate cultivate cultivate cultivate we are cultivate
- 0:27Hello and welcome to Yeal Crime where we discuss the funny strange and obscure crimes of Yesteryear
- 0:34I'm your host Lindsay Valenti and join me today in place of Maddie is my friend
- 0:40Caitlyn
- 0:41Yay, I could never replace Maddie
- 0:44This is true. She's pretty irreplaceable, but she's pretty awesome. She kind of rocks my socks all the way off
- 0:55She's an appreciate that. Yay. Yeah, Maddie is recuperating from surgery
- 1:00I'm not gonna explain what kind of surgery it is, but just know that it went well and she's just super super tired
- 1:05Which is fair? So I was like I'm not gonna make you talk to me when you are hyped up on drugs and should be resting
- 1:12Could be really interesting content, but maybe another time maybe another time when she probably isn't gonna be like falling asleep as she's talking to me
- 1:21Yeah, that probably wouldn't be very interesting
- 1:24There's just long pauses where I'm like waiting for her to respond and then I'm like, okay, they're mine moving on
- 1:31moving on
- 1:34So I have a quick correction cubby. I feel so bad about this so last week. I miss named Trevin's podcast
- 1:43It should be live laugh larceny not live love larceny
- 1:50I think I was in a weird fuchsate when I said that so I am sorry Trevin
- 1:56I already apologized to him like via DM so he's all good, but I want to acknowledge it to everybody else
- 2:03So no one comes at me and it's like actually
- 2:05Michael Trevin
- 2:08No, they're so kind and they're so nice
- 2:13While that would be a fabulous name, some people grow quite attached to the names of their shows so yeah
- 2:21That makes like the second time that I've misnamed somebody's podcast, but both time people have been pretty good about it so
- 2:28Yeah, I'm hoping I don't do it a third time and someone's like listen
- 2:33You know what now I've already planted in your head the misnomer that we were given, PNW Humps
- 2:42Humps, it was sort of a the vowel sound was a little vague so it was Humps or Humps and Humps eyes
- 2:52It's a fun one you know about about changing it if I'm honest
- 2:57Yeah, I think it should be a patreon only series where you have like smooth jazz in the background
- 3:03You know I like wear your headset I'm taking that into advisement
- 3:09Oh I suppose that's a good segue
- 3:14Caitlyn you should probably tell people where you're from because I didn't say you're a podcast you're from
- 3:19That's fair, that's fair we just know each other and we're like I know you everybody you know her
- 3:27And they're like we really don't really we don't yes
- 3:33So I am one half of the podcast PNW Humps and Homsides
- 3:40Yes, we hail from I've been told that apparently this is something not everybody knows
- 3:47P&W is the Pacific Northwest so just in case I was coming across a little mysterious
- 3:55I suppose that helps for like our international listeners who are like I don't know what P&W stands for
- 4:01Yeah and I dread to think about some of the different combinations that people could come up with
- 4:08It's probably better to be on front straight about it
- 4:12This is true
- 4:15So another quick thing I'm going to mention before we get into the episode is I want to shout out our patrons
- 4:21Our lovely patrons over on patreon
- 4:24So thank you so much to Jenna Shunifer and Tom
- 4:27And if you would like to join their ranks you can do so for as little as $1 a month over on patreon

- 5:58Back before blood tests
- 6:00You could be whoever you wanted as long as you had a great story
- 6:04Even a princess
- 6:06That is living
- 6:09I would have been so good at this
- 6:12I would have been the best
- 6:14I'm not a great liar typically but for the life of a princess
- 6:19I'll muster
- 6:21Yeah, I'll pull out all the stops to be a princess let's be real
- 6:24Yeah
- 6:25In 1812 King Gustaf Adolphus IV
- 6:29Who had been living in exile after he was deposed as the king of Sweden in the coup in 1809
- 6:35Divorced his wife, Federica of Bowden
- 6:38Years later, Helga shared that she was the product of his and Federica of Bowden's reunion
- 6:45When they secretly remarried, quote, "in a convent in Germany"
- 6:51And quote
- 6:52Not my dream choice of wedding venue
- 6:56I'm currently on the prowl but it's a choice
- 6:59It is a choice
- 7:01The most romantic one could argue know
- 7:04But you do you
- 7:06Yeah
- 7:07Monarchs can do what they want
- 7:09Sometimes you got to consider the budget
- 7:11This is true
- 7:13I'm an exile we were already divorced
- 7:16This convent here
- 7:18I don't think the nuns are going to charge us anything but you know
- 7:21I don't know
- 7:22Save the romance for the honeymoon in my darling
- 7:25That's true
- 7:27She was born in Lausanne in 1820
- 7:31But raised in secret by King Gustaf IV's aunt
- 7:35Princess Sophia Albertine of Sweden
- 7:38To ensure she wouldn't be viewed as a claimant to the royal throne
- 7:43She was also placed in Sophia's care due to the fact that Federica, her mother, was placed in a asylum
- 7:52Oh, okay, so not an ideal place to come up at the kid
- 7:58No
- 7:59So I think that tracks?
- 8:01Yeah
- 8:02Upon Sophia's death in 1829, Helga was taken to the Vodstinena asylum in Lincheping at the age of nine
- 8:13Under the guise of being insane
- 8:16So she could be raised in secret with her true identity, living from the world
- 8:22Why is everything got to be shrouded in so much mystery?
- 8:26And why is the answer a silence?
- 8:29Yeah, there's a lot of that
- 8:32Real asylum heavy on this story so far
- 8:36Not my first choice for places to you know, be shrouded in mystery
- 8:41No
- 8:42But you know, you do you
- 8:44Not so much
- 8:45Yeah, my gosh
- 8:48Helga lived in the asylum until 1834 when she was released at the age of 14
- 8:54Into the care of her family in Bowden
- 8:57While there, she was placed under house arrest
- 9:00Again, to keep her true identity a secret
- 9:04Oh boy
- 9:06She is just all of the aliases
- 9:10I mean, does anyone know who she really is?
- 9:14What does she even look like?
- 9:16I don't know
- 9:17Does she know who she is at this point?
- 9:20Exactly
- 9:22Why am I not allowed to see anybody?
- 9:25Yeah
- 9:27Her father passed away not long after she was reunited with her family
- 9:31Dying on February 7th, 1837 at the age of 58
- 9:36Overcome with grief at the news, Helga was once again taken to an asylum in Sweden at the age of 17
- 9:44The Bowden family who had gone to extreme lengths to keep her existence hidden
- 9:49Fear that if she were to suddenly speak out about her true identity while in a state of such grief
- 9:56Her words would only be viewed as those of a mad woman
- 10:00I mean, probably a fair assumption
- 10:05But you know, that is rude
- 10:10I know
- 10:11Historical woman thing
- 10:13I'm not a fan
- 10:15And again, why is the default asylum?
- 10:18There are other places that exist
- 10:23My gosh
- 10:25I mean, can we circle back to the convent idea?
- 10:29Yeah, pretend she's still wanting to join a better-
- 10:32A lot of them weren't better
- 10:32A lot of them weren't better
- 10:33A lot of them weren't better
- 10:35A lot of them weren't better at that point in history
- 10:40But I just switch it up, try something different
- 10:44Yeah, there are enough castles in the world in Europe where you probably could have found one
- 10:49So she could hide away in and it would be fine
- 10:52There's gotta be
- 10:54Yeah, that's the castle I want to live in
- 10:57I want to live in the small hidden away castle where I can live shrouded in history
- 11:03Yes
- 11:05Who's that girl?
- 11:07Yeah
- 11:09It's a mystery
- 11:11I love that, we're huge new girl fans
- 11:15You had me at who's that girl?
- 11:18Who's that girl?
- 11:20Don't know
- 11:22It wasn't long before she managed to escape, living off the charity of strangers sympathetic to her plight
- 11:29She started to appear in society
- 11:32And her requests for support were granted by Queen Mother, Yosufina, who provided her with a generous yearly pension of
- 11:40$1,000 reak stroller a year or around $19,450 as of 2015
- 11:48Okay, so it's something but that's not supporting your princess lifestyle
- 11:54No, not by a long shot
- 11:57In 1850 at the age of 30, she started to publicly discuss her royal lineage and began to petition the reigning monarch
- 12:06King Oscar the first for a yearly allowance
- 12:11Uh oh, yeah
- 12:12However, not everyone believed that Helga was who she claimed to be and her pension payments were halted
- 12:19She soon began to accumulate debts to the people who had been supporting her
- 12:24Deats she had no means to pay back
- 12:27Oh, double, uh oh
- 12:30I think it's another one of those classic cases of living above your means
- 12:34Kind of in a way, yeah
- 12:39Like girlfriend, for all intents and purposes, you are a peasant just like the rest of us, unfortunately, for you
- 12:48It's important for you, yes
- 12:50Helga had many private benefactors, including Salon hostess Frances Luan von Kook
- 12:57Who was the spouse of the Minister of Justice, Neal's von Kook
- 13:02The pair provided her with lodging as well as a lawyer
- 13:06Which is an interesting combination
- 13:09I mean that's moving on up in the world
- 13:12You got a house, you have legal representation
- 13:15Pretty good?
- 13:16Yeah, alright
- 13:19I'm digging it
- 13:20She also was supported by Anders Booser, a member of Parliament and the Royal Court chaplain Carl Norby
- 13:29Everyone who met her had no reason to doubt her as she seemed too sensible, almost naive, to be able to come up with any sort of half-truths
- 13:40Okay
- 13:42That's a tough one to argue against, I think at that point
- 13:47She's just a simple country girl, you know
- 13:50Yeah
- 13:52All that asylum life
- 13:54(laughs)
- 13:57Well, you know, if you're really wealthy, I suppose you don't have to be clever
- 14:02This is true, you can't
- 14:04What your money do the talking for you?
- 14:07There you go, I am ready
- 14:10I know
- 14:12Let me look at that Princess life
- 14:14Yes
- 14:1511 years after her pensions had been cut
- 14:18She petitioned to the Swedish government once more requesting her royal annuity
- 14:23Which she was granted from the foreign department in March of 1861 by King Charles XI
- 14:30Following a meeting he had with her, after which he claimed the members of Parliament "Why she is just as sane as you or me"
- 14:40And "Imagine that"
- 14:43And a woman
- 14:45(laughs)
- 14:46Yes, honestly that should be surprising after all of that time in so many asylum
- 14:56(laughs)
- 14:58How did she do it?
- 15:00You know, I think she's okay
- 15:03You know, up here
- 15:05(laughs)
- 15:06It's like the 1830s version of "You can have it all"
- 15:12Exactly
- 15:14Maybe she's born with it, maybe it's not mental illness
- 15:17(laughs)
- 15:20That's perfect
- 15:22T-M-T-M
- 15:23T-M-T-M-T-M-T-M
- 15:25By this point, many members of not just the Swedish Parliament
- 15:29But also the royal family became divided on their stance of whether or not Helga was in fact royalty
- 15:37Prime Minister Louis Dacier and four minister Ludwig Monderstrom were firmly in the camp of those that believed her to be a fraud
- 15:47Well, they sound like they have the most dickish names
- 15:51So I'm not surprised
- 15:54Your names are hard to say
- 15:56Exactly
- 15:58You're wrong
- 15:59Yeah
- 16:00Helga once again received a government pension this time of $2,400 Swedish week dollar
- 16:06Which as of 2015 would be around $7,500
- 16:11As well as furniture be fitting up princess
- 16:14Okay, well listen
- 16:17Maybe if somebody's putting me up in a nice spot
- 16:20I can learn to live on the little less
- 16:23You know, keep that girlish figure
- 16:27By trimming down the grocery budget
- 16:31Maybe she had a victory garden, you don't know
- 16:33I mean, it's anyone's guess, you know
- 16:37Exactly
- 16:39Ye old dietary accommodations
- 16:42Respections
- 16:43You know
- 16:44To be fair, she also continued to receive charity from her many supporters
- 16:49So she might have been living actually pretty good
- 16:52They didn't say anywhere how much she was making from her supporters
- 16:55So hard to say
- 16:57Hard to say
- 16:58Many members of the royal family viewed her lineage as legitimate
- 17:02While many fins and suites who knew of her assumed she was merely receiving unfair treatment by the current rating monarchy
- 17:10I mean, when has that ever happened though?
- 17:15I know
- 17:17Never
- 17:18They are known for their generous spirit and kindhearted acts of good will
- 17:25Toats
- 17:27Toats
- 17:28A long time female companion of Helga backed up her claims as a member of the royal family
- 17:34She was a well-spoken and properly educated woman
- 17:37Which helped assure those who doubted Helga of the validity of her claims
- 17:42This is an interesting thing that I came across
- 17:44Any press who wanted to verify her claims by reaching out to her mother were blocked
- 17:52Due to the fact that any communication with de-throwned royalty was illegal in Sweden
- 17:59Okay, well that complicates things just a touch
- 18:06And she was also I think still in an asylum
- 18:09So that also puts a little bit of a
- 18:11On whether or not what she said could be trusted
- 18:15Yeah, I guess you got to grease the wheels for you know some orderly there at the asylum
- 18:22Just put her out on the window you know like with the TV people and then I'll just you know slide on in and they'll be fine
- 18:30Yeah, that is the ye old version of sliding into someone's DMs
- 18:35Totally
- 18:37Solved it
- 18:39Hey girl, how's it going? You look real good
- 18:43Hey girl, hey, so what is the sit still me the 411?
- 18:50Am I the drama?
- 18:55At least until 1870 when Carl Norby wrote an essay about her that was published in the paper
- 19:04Which brought up more questions than answers prompting an investigation
- 19:10Oh, so people are like this is okay, there's some entry here
- 19:15Mm-hmm, maybe we pull it that thread just a little bit just a little bit
- 19:20Yeah, in 1876 under the reign of King Oscar the second people started to question if Helga was actually the person she claimed to be
- 19:30Which resulted in a trial
- 19:33Oh, I okay what kind of a trial
- 19:38I'm a little nervous now
- 19:41At this time Helga was 56 years old
- 19:46Okay, well does it seem like it kind of doesn't matter
- 19:52I mean at this point I'd say no but I mean they're royalty so yeah I get it
- 19:59During the trial which took place between 1876 and 1877
- 20:05Helga spilled it all providing her real identity that of Aurora Florentina Magnison
- 20:14Oh, all the hottest tea, mm-hmm, just build all of it
- 20:20Aurora Florentina Magnison was born on September 6th, 1817 in Stockholm, Sweden
- 20:28Her father was a custom caretaker named Andesh Magnison who passed away when Aurora was 9 in 1826
- 20:38She was one of five children and under the care of a widow mother whose social standing was nowhere near Andesh who was well educated
- 20:48Oh, okay
- 20:50It was at her confirmation that her mother was overheard saying that Aurora wasn't her biological child
- 20:57Clearly her foster child
- 20:59Oh, I know there's so much tea in this
- 21:03Aurora's mother listed her quote-unquote "real parents" as members of the upper class
- 21:10Count Dequeer and an unmarried noblewoman
- 21:16Shut the front door
- 21:19Scandal
- 21:21Ah
- 21:23Whether this was true or not, these simple statements would leave a profound and lasting impression on Aurora
- 21:31Regardless of her father's social status, Aurora was only able to receive a basic education
- 21:38In an 1835 at the age of 18, she became employed as a maid and bookkeeper to the headman family
- 21:46She was only with them for a short time, just three years, as they believed she was "above her station"
- 21:55Okay, when they say that, do they mean she was acting as if she was above her station?
- 22:02Okay
- 22:04Oh, yeah, I wonder why she thinks she's...
- 22:07Yeah, like, she literally thinks she is
- 22:11Yeah, like, I shouldn't have to clean for you guys, I'm above you
- 22:15I'm trying to live my best princess life
- 22:18And I'll be honest, my job duties are kind of getting in the way of that
- 22:24Yeah
- 22:25Like, same
- 22:26Yeah, you're totally harsh in my groove
- 22:29(laughs)
- 22:31Aurora then went on to be hired in 1838 by the wealthy merchant, Henryk Auspedgrian, on Vesterlaungaten 78
- 22:42Where she assisted the women of the family as they prepared for the balls they attended as a seamstress
- 22:48Oh, okay, so she might be getting, like, a little bit closer to the action?
- 22:53Mm-hmm
- 22:54I was getting, like, Cinderella type vibes right here, 'cause she's, like, helping them with their dresses and stuff
- 23:00This is, like, major, Bridgerton vibes
- 23:03Mm-hmm
- 23:05Given a glimpse of the type of life she so desperately wanted, Aurora implored one of the daughters to allow her to live with the family, proclaiming that she was homeless and had nowhere to go
- 23:19This daughter, Henryk Auspedgrian, became totally enamored with Aurora, gifting her expensive clothes before the pair eventually left the Auspedgrian household altogether
- 23:33What?
- 23:35Now, like, I don't want to, like, spread rumors or anything
- 23:40Right? I think I know where you're going with this
- 23:43Given this was, like, in the 1800s
- 23:46But, in, like, the stories that I read, it made it seem like they were a little closer than just good friends
- 23:54You don't say
- 23:56So, I don't know
- 23:58Yeah
- 23:59I don't know, and you'll kind of get it as I go through their dynamic, but it just seemed a little, like, they were more bosom buddies
- 24:08Yeah
- 24:09And then--
- 24:10There's a little more to it
- 24:11Yeah, 'cause I was just, like, that seems, like, really odd to just all of a sudden be, like, I love this girl so much that I'm gonna, like, run away from my house
- 24:20And we're gonna do our own thing together
- 24:23Right, especially coming from, you know, obviously some privilege
- 24:28To just say, I'm walking away from that
- 24:31Mm-hmm
- 24:33Yeah
- 24:34It's a big statement
- 24:35It is, so I was like, mm-hmm
- 24:37I wonder if there's a little bit more to that
- 24:40And if there is, you go girls
- 24:42But get it, you know, like, I just-- that was a little intrigued by that
- 24:47Yeah
- 24:49In 1844, the pair moved to Finland
- 24:52where Aurora changed her name to Aurora Florentina Dula Brosh, which was the last name of the royal family
- 25:01Oh, I see what she did there
- 25:03Mm-hmm
- 25:04The following year in 1845, she changed her name once more to Anna Florentina Dula Brosh
- 25:12The transition to her new persona of Dula Brosh was cemented when Aurora Magnison was reported as drowned
- 25:21Oh, okay, so now we're faking our death
- 25:26Mm-hmm
- 25:28Okay, I'm guessing it wasn't for life insurance money, but--
- 25:32I don't think so, I think it was more like, I need to bury this, like this needs to go away
- 25:38Wow, okay
- 25:40So, I was like, all right
- 25:42The name on her passport would eventually change to the name she was most commonly known as
- 25:48Helga Dula Brosh, while she and Henrika travel around Finland and Sweden
- 25:54during which time Henrika worked as a teacher in order to support their lavish lifestyle
- 26:00Okay, actually having to take a job, huh?
- 26:03I know
- 26:05That's tough times
- 26:06Yeah
- 26:08In 1846, Henrika established a lady's school in Turku, Finland
- 26:14capitalizing on the Dula Brosh name to appeal to the masses
- 26:19There are even accounts that Helga mastered the art of the fainting spell
- 26:24to avoid unpleasant questions and situations from parents
- 26:29Hello
- 26:31Okay, so--
- 26:33Where did you say this school was?
- 26:38You know, just Turku, Finland is fine
- 26:40Okay, yeah, all right, well we'll wrap this up because I do have a flight to catch, right?
- 26:47Oh no
- 26:50Two years later in 1848, the pair relocated to Orobro before moving to Sala in 1857
- 27:00where the pair attempted to create a fashion store but the project failed before it could really begin
- 27:07Okay, so I mean where did they go wrong?
- 27:11Are these like yield crocs that they were trying to get out there?
- 27:15I don't know if it was something where it was like they couldn't get a business loan
- 27:19or maybe they didn't have enough collateral to, you know what I mean?
- 27:24I just jumped immediately on the like, it wasn't fashionable fashion
- 27:30That's the train that I got on
- 27:32I was like, listen, if they had good fashion sense, somebody would have funded them
- 27:37It was just too soon for the croc movement
- 27:40They needed to wait another hundred some years
- 27:43At least
- 27:44Yeah, too soon, it was just too soon
- 27:46They were way too fashion forward
- 27:48They were like a century or so too fashion forward
- 27:52Yeah, I would say
- 27:54Oh boy
- 27:58You guys, we have something really exciting to share with you

- 28:24My name is Owen von Sid, I am a reclamer
- 28:27Do you know what that means?
- 28:29No?
- 28:30Well, I am sorry to inform you that you didn't make it
- 28:34Please try to remain calm
- 28:37The worst is over
- 28:39Nothing can hurt you, not ever again
- 28:42But the thing that did this to you, it is still out there
- 28:46That is what we do
- 28:47I wake unfortunate souls, such as yourself
- 28:50Hear their stories
- 28:52Then my associates and I see to it
- 28:54That whoever or whatever did this to you is dealt with
- 28:59Now, let's begin
- 29:01When you are ready
- 29:03Tell me, how did you die?
- 29:07Ghost Wax is an anthology horror podcast from far and tall tales productions

- 29:22Their info is in our show notes
- 29:25In the 1860s, the pair moved to Stockholm
- 29:30Where Aurora made the decision to profit off her fake identity
- 29:35Working to present herself as a long lost princess of Sweden
- 29:39Can't do that in crocs
- 29:41No
- 29:43People will be like, what the hell is going on with your feet girl?
- 29:46I don't think so
- 29:48Especially if you charm them out
- 29:51The way that my co-host does
- 29:54Cassie has a charm in every single one of her crockles
- 29:59Oh wow
- 30:00So you only have one in each of my crocs
- 30:02Really?
- 30:04Yeah
- 30:05She do it up big
- 30:07Yeah, I'm a little too basic
- 30:09I'm not that cool
- 30:11That's okay, that'd be me
- 30:12I have one that's like a little Starbucks cup on one foot
- 30:15And then the other one is a little boba thing
- 30:18And I think it says suck my balls
- 30:21Hello
- 30:23Which I thought was the stereotypical
- 30:25Caffeine and potty humor
- 30:27And I'm there for that
- 30:29Mm-hmm
- 30:30I mean
- 30:31What else is there?
- 30:34I don't think I need to add any more to those crocs
- 30:37They say enough as it is
- 30:39No, you've got it
- 30:41The trial drew royal and national attention
- 30:46With both classes waiting with baited breath for the verdict
- 30:50On March 2nd, 1877, Aurora was ultimately found guilty of fraudulently claiming to be a member of the royal family
- 31:00As well as registering herself under a false name, the year of birth
- 31:05And for not tax registering herself for the year of 1877
- 31:11Oh, tax fraud, that's always how they get you
- 31:14Oh, man
- 31:18You gotta pay your taxes
- 31:20Yeah, especially if you're committing other crimes
- 31:23Any tax professional will tell you
- 31:25Yep
- 31:26I feel like that was like a last little dick thing they added on there
- 31:29And not only do you have a false name but you know, taxes
- 31:34Taxes, you know
- 31:37Death and taxes, that's the thing
- 31:39That's exactly in my head, I'm just like death and taxes
- 31:46Oh no, but are we gonna get a side of death with the taxes in this situation?
- 31:52Well, surprisingly, she was sentenced numerous fines and somehow avoided jail
- 31:58What?
- 32:00Okay, now I fully think that that was, I mean, she was wrongfully convicted
- 32:06Because if she really did it, they would have given her something harsh
- 32:11Yeah, like, right?
- 32:13Hard labor
- 32:14They wouldn't do that to the princess
- 32:17Even if they're trying to make her stay a secret princess
- 32:20That's, um, convinced me otherwise, I don't think you can
- 32:24Yep
- 32:25Following the trial, Aurora and Henrica moved to an apartment together
- 32:29in the Clara Nora region of Sweden where they lived in seclusion
- 32:33The pair were described as nice old ladies
- 32:37Who were regularly seen walking in the park, ordered their food delivered to them at home
- 32:43And rarely spoke with others
- 32:46Oh my god, this could be, well, this could be me and Cassie
- 32:51This could be you and Maddie
- 32:53Right
- 32:54I mean, how many friends did they have? Maybe this is you, me, Cassie and Maddie
- 33:00Just living in our little, like, cute little old lady apartment
- 33:04I love that
- 33:06I know
- 33:07The pair surfaced briefly in 1884
- 33:10When King Oscar II spotted them roaming the drughtening home gardens
- 33:15and had them removed from the property
- 33:18Which is, I think, a little over the top
- 33:21Come on, I was going to say
- 33:23They're old
- 33:24They're little old ladies
- 33:26Have some class
- 33:28Right, you don't need to kick them out of the garden, God
- 33:31Give me a break
- 33:33Even if there were fences, they're not going to be able to scale them
- 33:36Let's be real
- 33:37They're little ladies
- 33:38Mm-mm
- 33:39After this, the women moved to another apartment in Zjordgleton
- 33:45Run by Mrs. Maria Charlotte Nyberg in an effort to avoid being arrested
- 33:50I'm sure they're kind of paranoid at this point, like
- 33:53I would think so
- 33:54Like, the king kicked us out of his garden
- 33:57Where's it going to go?
- 33:58Yeah
- 33:59We're going to go in peace
- 34:01Exactly
- 34:02Just a year later, Aurora passed away on January 11th, 1885 at the age of 67
- 34:09As she lay on her deathbed, she shared with friend and artist
- 34:13Gioch von Rosen
- 34:15That she firmly believed she was of noble birth
- 34:19Oh, I know
- 34:21That's so sad!
- 34:23I mean, if you think about it though
- 34:25She was really kicking
- 34:28I mean, a year before she died, she just like got casually kicked out of the king's garden
- 34:34I know
- 34:36Fuck
- 34:37Right
- 34:38Wow, that really puts my weekend into perspective
- 34:41I know, I did nothing with myself
- 34:44Wow
- 34:46Okay, well, you know, something to aspire to
- 34:50Mm-hmm
- 34:51Maybe next weekend
- 34:52I know
- 34:53I need to up my game to get kicked out of someone's garden
- 34:56Then I'll be kind of close to her level of cool
- 34:59Right?
- 35:01Politician Paer Ogoost Uonson sought to clear Aurora/Helga's name in 1909
- 35:09In the November 3rd, 1910 edition of the Wayne News newspaper
- 35:14An article ran titled "Sweetish Royalty Fighting Lawsuit involving a ruler"
- 35:20Sections of the article are as follows
- 35:22So I didn't do the whole thing, but I just kind of pulled out some interesting pieces
- 35:26Ooh, a little juicy tidbit
- 35:29Mm-hmm
- 35:30Quote, "The amazing action will be resumed to recover $1,250,000 for around $40,000,000 today"
- 35:40Ho-ha!
- 35:41From the Swedish Royal Purse
- 35:44The plaintiff is Pa Uonson, a member of the long sting
- 35:50He not only seeks to recover the money, but also a number of letters he says were given to the royal family
- 35:57By the late Anna/Helga/Dula-Brosch
- 36:01Count von Rosen regards Miss Dula-Brosch as sincere in the claims she put forward during her life
- 36:09He adds, quote, "If she did deceive, it was because she herself had been deceived
- 36:15She had from her earliest childhood her statements from which sprang the conviction
- 36:21to her dying hour that she was in truth the daughter of the king," end quote
- 36:26Just fair
- 36:28Yeah, I mean this is all based on what she was told
- 36:32Mm-hmm
- 36:33Quote, "After the pension was stopped, she made her first appearance at the foreign office
- 36:38In general, Lagerheim tried to demonstrate the future of her pretensions
- 36:43You think then," she cried, "that I am an imposter?
- 36:47I don't think so.
- 36:48I am sure of it."
- 36:50Lagerheim was the reply of the director general
- 36:52Miss Dula-Brosch got up and went off, quote, "Looking more like a bad tempered woman found out that an offended princess," end quote
- 37:03Okay, well those things just to be fair, they can look very similar
- 37:08Well, it's like what does an offended princess do? Like throw her gloves or like drop a handkerchief and like, hoth away?
- 37:17I, you know, I think we have a real world example of sort of the
- 37:22One of these things is not like the other with the royal family right now
- 37:29I think Kate is very much what this is what a princess should look like
- 37:34And then Megan is apparently oftentimes not
- 37:39Love her, hate her, whatever you think
- 37:43Quote, "Mrs. Maria Charlotte Neiburg at whose house the claimant lodged during the last years of her life
- 37:50Declares her guest frequently stated she was the issue of a secret marriage of King Gustaf's support
- 37:56She also said she met her father on the island of Fuyen in the sound about 1830
- 38:02And received from him several letters of such importance to her fortune that subsequently $1,250,000 for the $40,000,000 that I mentioned before
- 38:14Was deposited in her interest by her Russian relatives with the Swedish royal family
- 38:20That is really great news if she can produce that letter, am I right?
- 38:25Right
- 38:26As to the incidental assertion put in by the defending attorney court auditor Lund Greene
- 38:33That Miss Dubabrach was identical with a certain Anzora Florentina Magnuson, the daughter of a customs official
- 38:42Mr. Blancwist, who was her legal advisor in 1870, has filed a law statement in disproof, declaring the allegation is "census"
- 38:53Okay, well, you know, let's stop throwing around this senseless hysterical crazy
- 39:03We don't want to end up in the asylum again, do we?
- 39:06I know
- 39:07Fourth time, that's so great
- 39:09It's already been there so much
- 39:11Three times
- 39:13Oh man, third time was not the charm
- 39:16No
- 39:17The 1910s brought to light some interesting new details about Helga's supposed mother, Frederika of Bowden
- 39:26Prior to her divorce from King Gustavus of 4, she had named the Russian Zare Alexander I as the guardian of her children
- 39:36With this new information brought to light, Helga would have been entitled to royal compensation
- 39:44However, it didn't really matter since the Russian Revolution started in 1917
- 39:50He and this was several years after her death
- 39:53Ah, that is so annoying
- 39:57So that is the story of Helga Dubabrach/Arora Florentina Magnuson
- 40:04My gosh
- 40:06I mean, she had some awesome names, Aurora, that's a pretty cool name
- 40:11I was just thinking to myself, I love the name Aurora
- 40:15It's all about sleeping beauty bags
- 40:17Yeah
- 40:19What do you think? Do you think she was just a con artist or do you think maybe she really truly thought she was?
- 40:26Oh, I am team Princess Aurora/Helga all the way, for sure
- 40:33If she wasn't actually royalty, I don't think that she knew any better
- 40:39Yeah
- 40:42Well, and given that she did grow up in a asylum, like who's to say what sort of things she would have thought up when she was there
- 40:52I mean, what sort of orphan kid wouldn't be like, wouldn't be great if I was just a lost princess
- 40:59In a rain? Yeah
- 41:02And then the mind has great ways of convincing itself of certain truths
- 41:09Oh, absolutely
- 41:11And if no one came out until she was in her 50s saying, oh no, that's not right
- 41:17How would she know any different?
- 41:21Especially if people were like, we're going to put you under house arrest because you are this princess that's missing
- 41:26We want to make sure nobody's going to do anything to you
- 41:30Exactly, my god, what is she supposed to believe at that point?
- 41:35Yeah, I agree
- 41:37I don't know, that's... that's Helga for you
- 41:40I think you mean Princess Aurora?
- 41:43There you go, Princess Aurora of Sweden

- 43:37This week's podcast plug is the Life Curious Women podcast
- 43:42where you will find honest conversations exploring women's experiences, learning, growing and healing
- 43:48Join Latinx actor and a longtime learner, Ashley Nadine Lopez, a she interviews fellow Life Curious Women in their journeys to finding or following their purpose
- 43:59If you are working on growth in your life, you need some inspiration or are just played interested in the stories of other women, give it a listen
- 44:08Love that! And she was on the last episode of Can You Crack the Cranport
- 44:14Okay, I thought that sounded really familiar
- 44:17Yeah, so you can, if you haven't listened to that episode, you can go back and check that out
- 44:22But we'll have a link to her show in the show
- 44:25And we have a listener question this week, so you get an opportunity to answer a listener question
- 44:30Ooh! So our friend, Kieran, wants to know, would you travel back in time so you could stop Jack the Ripper
- 44:39Or so you could gather more evidence before the bodies were discovered through the future to find out
- 44:46That is so tough!
- 44:51So I can just completely stop him, just nip that in the bud
- 44:59Oh boy! But what is, oh man, dammit, Ashton, I'm thinking of the butterfly effect
- 45:08I think I have to go back and collect more evidence, because I mean who knows what other aspects of history that I'm changing
- 45:20And it pains me to say it, but uh, final answer, Regis!
- 45:27Yeah, I agree with you, I think it's one of those things where it's horrible what happened to those canonical five
- 45:37And who knows it happened to more women that we don't know about, because there was no Ripper letters about other women
- 45:47Right! Seems like there's a high likelihood
- 45:51Especially given how there was pockets of time in between the first three, and then all of a sudden it was the second two
- 46:00We're just super bam bam bam bam, yeah, and how it kind of escalated to that point like it didn't just start with minor incisions or anything in the first victim
- 46:11Like it was like this guy knew what he was doing, so I feel like if I could go back it would definitely be together more evidence before he got to the point where he finally stopped
- 46:25If that is in fact when he did one, so that's the thing, right?
- 46:31It's so hard to look at some of the gaps in the case and say yes for sure the canonical five that's you know was he killing before that?
- 46:43Did he continue killing after? Was he? I mean think about all of the conspiracies about other parts of the world that he may have traveled to
- 46:52And cases all over the world that could be potentially leaked to him
- 46:57Like the H.H. Holmes theory that oh my god that theory it's a wild one
- 47:03It is a wild one I was like oh my god I just can't see that that's not his MO though
- 47:09That wasn't H.H. Holmes MO
- 47:12She was all about like gassing people and all that other stuff
- 47:18It doesn't really fit for me you know to my mind but I guess anything's possible
- 47:26Anything is possible
- 47:29This is true
- 47:30Well thank you for that question Kitten, I hope you appreciate how it's possible
- 47:35Yeah that was such a good question
- 47:38All right ladies first what is something good you'd like to share this week?
- 47:44Oh my goodness how did I get to this point and not even it never occurred to me think of you're something good
- 47:51I know
- 47:52Oh my gosh well I'm recently engaged and that in and of itself could be as something good
- 47:58Congratulations, what's so excited
- 48:01It would be really something good if I could remember to call my fiance that instead of boyfriend
- 48:08But we're working on it
- 48:10It's a working progress
- 48:11It takes a little while to get used to saying that
- 48:13It does yeah man he's got a whole new title it's a it's a promotion
- 48:18So that's exciting we actually just visited the first of the two venues that we're gonna go and look at
- 48:27We have another one this week and we spent a little bit of time with his parents this afternoon
- 48:34To show them the venues online and it's starting to feel a little bit more real
- 48:40So it's exciting it's a little bit stressful but yeah
- 48:45It's mostly exciting so far
- 48:49Yeah yeah yeah
- 48:51Yeah that was that was a fun part for us like kind of figuring out where you're gonna have it
- 48:56Yeah
- 48:57And all the other little like details that go into it
- 49:00Yeah
- 49:01Have fun with that
- 49:02It's fun
- 49:03Yeah I think so it should be
- 49:05All right
- 49:07Now I'm like thinking in something good that I should that I can share
- 49:12I knew this earlier
- 49:14Well there's a real hassle trying to get this episode up
- 49:20Let's see
- 49:22I suppose my something good is the fact that my one coworker who works on my team
- 49:32What up to
- 49:35Who designed all of our artwork like our logo and stuff
- 49:40That's so fun
- 49:41I know
- 49:43She was unable to make a work trip that she was originally scheduled for in New Orleans
- 49:51So now it sounds like she's gonna be going to a trade show with me in the fall
- 49:56Which I'm super excited about
- 49:58And we're going to Washington DC and I've never been to DC before so I'm pretty excited
- 50:03Hello Major score
- 50:06Wow you're burying the lead there
- 50:08I know so I'm pretty excited
- 50:10That's something where the reason I thought of it is because my boss
- 50:15Voked flights this week
- 50:17She was like are you okay with these flights
- 50:19No I was like yes
- 50:20I can be at the airport if I have in the morning that's fine
- 50:23I just won't sleep the night before it'll be great
- 50:26Oh no
- 50:28Yeah
- 50:29Not excited about that but we'll get home around dinner time when the way back so it's fine
- 50:34Yeah well that is going to be such a great trip
- 50:38I have not been to Washington DC either
- 50:42So you're going to have to fill me in on all of the things that you manage to cram into that little trip and let me know what's up
- 50:52I know
- 50:53She and I joke that we're going to try and like sit on Lincoln's lap
- 50:57I'm not sure that's not going to happen
- 50:59But ahh
- 51:01I mean we could try to spider-man our way up but I'm pretty sure someone's going to like try to arrest us if we do that
- 51:07Jake can not do that
- 51:09I should do it
- 51:11It's going to say I'm not entirely sure like you know #nothaloir
- 51:18But
- 51:21Do they frown on that?
- 51:24Pretty sure it's frowned upon but to try to sit on a little pop a Lincoln's lap
- 51:29But you know well maybe you can use the magic of photography to try and make it look like you're sitting on his lap
- 51:37You know what I think I think I might know guy
- 51:42Or you know the magic workshop
- 51:45But we can pretend
- 51:48We can pretend
- 51:50Yeah
- 51:52And on that note we're going to shut it down

- 52:45And after listening to the first one I binged for a day
- 52:49I don't even feel bad for listening to a true crime podcast
- 52:52Because I feel like I'm learning about interesting historical happenings too
- 52:56So true
- 52:58Thank you, Low
- 52:59I recorded it with her recently for an upcoming episode of Can You Craft a Camboard
