- 0:45Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast with bronzy glow,
- 0:50I'm Curtis Wilson. Happy hump day, big guy.
- 0:54Yes, sir. Yes sir.
- 0:56I got a little little little extra bonus tonight class guide.
- 1:00Let out early. So I had a little little more
- 1:02time than I'd planned. So, we're rolling and rocking
- 1:05tonight on time, ready to talk a little by week's Shenanigans
- 1:10here and see what we can. We can chop up and figure out
- 1:13about this offense man. Bye week.
- 1:16Banner. Some self-reflection tonight.
- 1:19Some digging into the statistics, some reviewing.
- 1:23This conferences and digging into Brian had a great time
- 1:28today. Brian got to dig into the
- 1:31essentially foundation of the crew offense little history
- 1:38project today guess history, prop history project Bottom by
- 1:42some conversations. We heard earlier this week with
- 1:45Jerrod Evans and then just me getting very bored me getting
- 1:53bored. Last night, Curtis is like, take
- 1:55a look at this. I was like, I'll take a look at
- 1:57it. Now, I'm going to look at for
- 1:58other games and and we're going to, we're going to put this into
- 2:01the into the show tonight. So, I triggered, Brian, because
- 2:05I'm sitting here, this is kind of what it happen.
- 2:07What we're going to go about later on the episode.
- 2:10I'm literally sitting here saying, I wonder if the foo
- 2:15offense is the same as it was a decade ago, when he was scoring
- 2:1943 points, plus a game. I TCU so I essentially were I
- 2:24was able to find A full gameplay with pretty much in all 22 View
- 2:30and the side view, I sent it to Brian.
- 2:33We go through like 15 minutes looking at plays couple things.
- 2:38Brian immediately says, why aren't we doing this now?
- 2:42We'll get into that. But we're going to be first guys
- 2:45is we're going to go deep. Do some statistics about what
- 2:49we're seeing on offensive, and defensive side of the ball and
- 2:52then we can go into the oppressors with food ham and
- 2:56Horn. Sounds like a how crisp
- 2:59Thanksgiving dish, right there. I want some food ham corn and
- 3:02then we're going to have that turducken.
- 3:04Is that what is that what it was like for ducking?
- 3:06What? You get your size as well.
- 3:08Yeah, exactly. And then we're going to go look
- 3:11at that table on making some pictures for some games this
- 3:14weekend. We are not going to be here
- 3:15Sunday, this is the by we get hokey.
- 3:17So like the Hokies we're practicing in the middle of the
- 3:21week. We're going to get the weekend
- 3:22off their heads refill here. Any picks this week guys soon,
- 3:28or you can flip a coin against our picks.
- 3:33Hey, I'm better than a coin flip.
- 3:35Now guys, one flip. Hey, start with my current
- 3:42record, hold up. If you have been betting with me
- 3:45after the absolutely horrendous, start us the three in God.
- 3:52I am, let's see three and nighttime 18 and 12 against the
- 3:56spread after week one. I'm a sick.
- 4:00So he said you're doing pretty good.
- 4:01What? You got?
- 4:02A little bit of data. Exactly, exactly.
- 4:06All right. Well let's kick it off here.
- 4:07Brian let's kick it off. Looks look at the defensive side
- 4:10of the ball and let's do the first two steps on a thread and
- 4:14talk about is this third down conversion.
- 4:18Hokies to me, this is Elite territory 28.8%, conversions
- 4:23against them, 15th in the country, and they're only giving
- 4:27up 71 first downs. And in four games folks, that's
- 4:30roughly about 16 17 a game. Which when you start talking
- 4:35about, people aren't converting. Plus you have a guy like Peter
- 4:39more. Shout out Peter more freshman
- 4:4229th, and a country with 42 yards, net.
- 4:45Even teams that are moving the ball brine, you know, they're
- 4:48not getting far, and they're not converting on third down.
- 4:52So great start for our defense, right?
- 4:55Absolutely great. Start for the defense on third
- 4:57down. And as you said, with Peter
- 4:58more, when you look at the statistics, I think another
- 5:02thing they're showing is that we're doing a great job in
- 5:04average starting field position. For our defense won, com1 climb
- 5:09over on the other side of the field one time and that's huge.
- 5:12That's that's definitely playing in to our advantage there.
- 5:14Any time you can Take your, the other team have to drive 65 plus
- 5:20yards to score a touchdown. Every time you're doing
- 5:24something right? And that's regardless of whether
- 5:27it's kickoff pump, whatever we're doing a good job of making
- 5:30them have to start fairly deep in their own territory with
- 5:33every drive and that, that definitely UPS the chances of
- 5:36the defense, being able to get off the field without
- 5:38surrendering any points. They've been doing that is
- 5:41they've been doing that as well. Braun scoring off.
- 5:45Sworn defense has 15th in the country, borderline Elite 15
- 5:49.25, the game and that's including we haven't stopped on
- 5:53anybody. In the Red Zone, yet teams are
- 5:55747 in the red zone for touchdowns three field goals.
- 6:00So statistically we are not. We're literally at the bottom of
- 6:04the barrel because every time they get down there they score
- 6:06unfortunately. But in four games to only have
- 6:13seven Red Zone trips, I'd take that, okay?
- 6:17You're not getting in there either.
- 6:19You're gonna have to beat the long plays, or you're kicking
- 6:21long field goals. Yeah.
- 6:23And I mean, I'd like to see, maybe that that foreign three
- 6:26swapped, I'd like to see four field goals against three
- 6:28touchdowns. But the the number the total
- 6:32number with seven trips. I mean, that's good, it's over
- 6:34the course of four games. So I'll take that all day
- 6:37especially It's we've only surrendered, really, you know, a
- 6:40handful of big plays on defense as well.
- 6:44Well, three the Carolina screen, the long-running West Virginia,
- 6:48and the corner smashing West, Virginia, along with their
- 6:5150-plus yard field goal. So even when teams again and
- 6:57there's only what one, over 40 yard for your plus yard
- 7:01touchdown. Yeah.
- 7:03So we're not seeing what we were seeing last year or we're not
- 7:06seeing those big gash runs. Yeah, you know you look they'll
- 7:10occasionally bus to 15-yarder on us but we're not giving up
- 7:13consistently those big cashiers of 30-plus that are going for
- 7:17touchdowns exactly and that's what was killing this defense
- 7:21last year. And you know with that stopping
- 7:26the tackling better essentially, people can throw things and and
- 7:32I hope somebody comment some of the chat.
- 7:35Dax is playing his natural position.
- 7:36And tis is playing his natural position.
- 7:39They're both playing 85% of the time they're not, they're no
- 7:43longer sharing snaps. So we're not splitting snaps and
- 7:47actually playing a position that he's comfortable with.
- 7:50And we saw him out on the field, a whole lot more against
- 7:52Richmond. Then we have previous week's.
- 7:55Yeah, because they were a more of a run.
- 7:57First offense, especially once Mancuso went down on the first
- 8:01drive there, they were printing. They were very much a run first
- 8:04off. And so that meant that we didn't
- 8:06necessarily need that true nickel package, that we've been
- 8:11deploying against some of the other teams that like to swing
- 8:13the ball around a lot more. Exactly.
- 8:16Now, the last few things I'm going to throw on with the
- 8:19defense here. Total Defense.
- 8:22We just put that out there. First 47, that 326 yards very
- 8:26respectable up close to 60 positions from last year and
- 8:31where we were. So okay, I'm goes on that.
- 8:35Having a full All Seasons, definitely helpful.
- 8:37But the the other pieces I want to take a look at here, is we
- 8:41forced six turnovers 50th in the nation?
- 8:45And what do you usually look at Brian?
- 8:48What do you want to know about when you hear about forcing a
- 8:50fair? Number of turnovers in the first
- 8:52course of four games. What do you think?
- 8:58Pressure in this team's getting pressure.
- 9:03Okay. I like that 25th in the country
- 9:05and sacks three and a quarter of game 45th in the country and
- 9:10tackle for loss at six point, eight a game.
- 9:12So, you know, like I think Richmond had a total like 62
- 9:16plays do the math and if you're, if you're averaging 10, If
- 9:22you're averaging ten times getting in the backfield then
- 9:27basically 20% of the time you can book.
- 9:30We're getting there. Not wanting what do we got?
- 9:33I wish there was this that out here PFF, probably has it.
- 9:35I love to go see it. Hits and pressures.
- 9:38If you're getting there, fifteen twenty percent of the time with
- 9:40Saxon tackles for loss, how much more additional pressure you're
- 9:44putting on that defense. So bad throws forced fumbles,
- 9:48five, interceptions, total obviously, Jermaine Waller.
- 9:50Leading the way. And one of the top guys in the
- 9:53country. So yeah, deep that it will go
- 9:57ahead and say, you know, we've talked about the last few weeks
- 10:01that we haven't necessarily seen.
- 10:03You know, the stat sheet filled up by bar.
- 10:05No. But it looks like the impact of
- 10:07the defensive line as a whole is there.
- 10:09And you know, bar knows impacting the game in different
- 10:12ways that aren't necessarily showing up on the stat sheet.
- 10:16But we definitely need to get him involved a little more in
- 10:18terms of getting back there in the in the back.
- 10:22It again like we saw kind of the start of the season and we're
- 10:26going to talk about that a little bit J.
- 10:27Hamm address that a little bit in the press conference.
- 10:29So we'll talk about that a little bit more but it's nice to
- 10:32see the Hokies getting pressure on the quarterback.
- 10:34Again getting tackles for loss disrupting the running game
- 10:38because a lot of that was absent really last few years, but last
- 10:43year a particular particular last year.
- 10:46So in general, as we look at all the data points in what we've
- 10:49seen on the field with the defense and make sense, this is,
- 10:51you know, I know Oh, Total Defense is 47, but you start
- 10:54going through all these stats, do you say we're a top-25
- 10:58defense? So yeah I mean we're up there
- 11:03and you know, I think we talked about it.
- 11:09When we look at whether we talk about Total Defense, your
- 11:12points, I care more about points.
- 11:14Yes. Because if you're keeping points
- 11:17off the board, you can move move between the your own 20 and are
- 11:2340 all day. But, you know, we're going to
- 11:26lock it down as long as we lock it down after that, it's all
- 11:29good to me. Get that 45, 50 yards of offense
- 11:33and then get nothing out of it. So again, you know, Scoring its
- 11:39Elite. And if you take away the couple
- 11:42of big plays, it would probably be in the top five, but some
- 11:46things to work on, not perfect, on defense yet, but, definitely
- 11:49some things to work on. All right, I'm gonna go to the
- 11:52office now because okay, that ain't is good and let's go with
- 11:57the two things we're doing actually, okay, okay, I'll put
- 12:01together, first of all, we've only had four turnovers all year
- 12:0536 in the country. We are not just handing the ball
- 12:09two teams which is good because the way the defense is playing
- 12:15way the defense is playing. If you don't turn the ball over
- 12:19you don't necessarily put them in bad spots.
- 12:22They get they get the ball back to you pretty quick.
- 12:25Yeah. Now the other believe it or not
- 12:27this is not a bad statistics on those one third down
- 12:30conversions, we're 40th in the country.
- 12:32We're converting about 45% of our third Downs.
- 12:38But I know something me and you talked about and it's going to
- 12:41go into this. We're only getting 78 first
- 12:43downs for the year. So we're only getting about 19 a
- 12:46game and we just talked about our defense giving up about 16
- 12:5117 a game. We're not far behind.
- 12:53So I know you talked about the Richmond game.
- 12:58Ryan particular a little earlier this week about You know, it's
- 13:03cool to be able to convert their downs but you're tired of it,
- 13:09right? Yeah.
- 13:10Middle Tennessee, State and Richmond.
- 13:12We got to third down way more than we should have.
- 13:17There's no reason that we should not have been successful at a
- 13:21higher rate on first and second down where we weren't forced
- 13:24into. So many third down
- 13:25opportunities, converting on third down opportunities is
- 13:29important and it's a good tune up for some of those hard.
- 13:32Our matchups that we're going to face starting next week with
- 13:34Notre Dame, but at the same time we should be able to assert
- 13:40ourselves against a Richmond or Middle Tennessee, State and not
- 13:44get forced into situations where we're having to convert on third
- 13:47down at such a rate that we have.
- 13:50Yeah, and it's just it's one of those things.
- 13:54It's like we don't have those explosive plays where we're
- 13:57getting 15 20 yards of Pop. Five to six times a game that
- 14:03essentially against teams like that.
- 14:05That's how you crush them quick now.
- 14:07All right, I've done the good, okay?
- 14:10Bad and ugly. It's there, it's just bad and
- 14:13ugly. It's not bad being ugly.
- 14:14It's just, it's all bad and ugly.
- 14:17It's a combination, all bad and ugly.
- 14:20Let's start with this man. Yeah, the Red Zone, efficiency.
- 14:24Where 107th out of 130, some teams, we are only converting
- 14:2964% of our Red Zone. You know, we've only had 14
- 14:34trips, we've inverted 9 obviously, there's three we know
- 14:37about, but in general even though that like you can say
- 14:40well that game really skews it, It's your also sit here, you
- 14:45take those out, it's like 6 or 11, you're still about the same
- 14:48percentage in the other three games.
- 14:51And luckily, for us, the defense has been bawling because we
- 14:56loved so many points on the field.
- 14:58I don't know. For when they talk about it
- 15:00right now, I mean, can we just start?
- 15:03Let's just count how many potential on field will say it
- 15:08will go 5 number 21 points at West Virginia right?
- 15:13Right. Yeah.
- 15:16What would we say 14 points at North Carolina?
- 15:20I'd say at least at least 14 in North Carolina and then probably
- 15:247th or Richmond in Middle Tennessee.
- 15:30We agree, you agree. There's been a girl's a couple
- 15:31D, the Peter Moore Bluff up, the getting behind on the chains.
- 15:36When we were driving you like, okay, start doing the math and
- 15:41it's like, okay, 30 next thing, you know, it's like it's 50
- 15:44points, Max, when we left on the board, you throw 50 points on
- 15:49there are dismal scoring off the sense of numbers. 99th in the
- 15:56country. We got 99 problems and scoring
- 15:58is definitely. One point three and a half a
- 16:01game. Yeah.
- 16:03I mean, we just got to get better.
- 16:07I mean, we've missed a couple field goals that were giving a
- 16:10chip shots, because we're on the wrong hash for good or ill.
- 16:13I mean, that's at this point, we, that shouldn't be a problem,
- 16:16but the fact that it is means that we need to start adjusting
- 16:19to it, right? Take that into account and you
- 16:25know, it's bad enough. Not converting, it's even worse.
- 16:28When you when you leave. On the field in the kicking
- 16:31game. So that's kind of doubled down
- 16:33on our our lack of success in the Red Zone.
- 16:36It's like, okay, we're not getting seven then half the
- 16:39time. We're not getting three either
- 16:40whether it's because we choose to go for which, in some of
- 16:43those cases I think was necessary.
- 16:45Well, and in some of those cases, it probably would have
- 16:47been smarter to take three and then, but, you know, we've had a
- 16:52couple times where we've been inside the 10 and miss the
- 16:53three. So, you know, when that's what
- 16:56that may be playing into the idea of rolling the dice there.
- 16:59Exactly. So, you know, it's really kind
- 17:02of one feeding the other at this point.
- 17:04And when you're playing down like we were most of West
- 17:07Virginia, that's when you start making those kind of choices,
- 17:10right? You have to I mean, we made
- 17:14three choices to go for touchdowns versus kicking field
- 17:19goals. And that game, if Romeo could
- 17:23have made them from that close, its nine points.
- 17:25It's a six-point game three point.
- 17:26When you probably don't, you don't know at the time that
- 17:29you're To get two turnovers in the second half that are going
- 17:31to set you up nicely. Nope.
- 17:34And overall, Braun the total offense.
- 17:36We're at 113. I mean, this is, this is like
- 17:40crime 2000's offense, which Stanny 113 329, ouch.
- 17:49I mean, the thing is, we have pretty decent field position.
- 17:53A lot of time starting probably somewhere in the I would say,
- 17:57Between 30 and 35 and you count. Again, you start doing the math
- 18:01and it's just like it translates, right?
- 18:04We're averaging three touchdowns a game roughly 320 you do the
- 18:09math and we've talked about the you know the the punting game
- 18:15with Peter more there. Let's talk about the kick return
- 18:17game are punt, return team, and our kick return team have set us
- 18:22up pretty good. Yes, they have for most of the
- 18:25year so and that's why. Why?
- 18:26I mean some of the this offense has to start coming together
- 18:30because we can't keep having the defense get us good stops or and
- 18:34or turnovers and are kicking team.
- 18:36Give us good field position and We Come Away with three points
- 18:39or nothing. Most of the time.
- 18:41We got to start putting the ball in the end zone.
- 18:45It's very true, man. And I mean are essentially our
- 18:48punt unit punt. Return unit is actually one of
- 18:52the best in the nation, you know, coming in in the top 20,
- 18:58the 145 return yards, you know, obviously you got taste
- 19:01touchdown and and that's one of those parts where it's can we.
- 19:08Can I say it even though this is a whole new regime is history
- 19:11repeating itself. Its history repeating itself and
- 19:16it's what the whole different cast of characters.
- 19:20Yeah. And something has to be done
- 19:22and, you know, let's just flip it over.
- 19:24Let's hear what let's talk about, what coach Fuente had to
- 19:28say. I think the big one I want to
- 19:30start with here. Brian is there having practice
- 19:33this week? We lose that in the first part
- 19:37Monday. Yesterday and today it was with
- 19:41primarily, all the young guys, they're looking at snap count.
- 19:44The old guys were getting true breaks, they'll be back,
- 19:47Thursday for some workout or Thursday, for actual practice.
- 19:52And then Friday for workouts, I'm assuming this is probably
- 19:56something that's just normal policy in Collegiate football.
- 20:03I wouldn't say it's standard but I think it definitely is widely
- 20:08used. I think it kind of depends on
- 20:11the coach I know Fuente somewhat alluded to the fact that he used
- 20:15to kind of have a set schedule for the bye week and he's kind
- 20:21of changed that up over the years and kind of is done things
- 20:25as needed for the team at the current moment.
- 20:28And I think, looking at where we are, depth, wise and Things like
- 20:33that, getting rest for the veteran guys, for a couple days,
- 20:38you know, he'll up, still keep the mental sharp, right?
- 20:42But not necessarily doing a ton on the physical side of things
- 20:46and then coming back on Thursday and then getting that lift on
- 20:49Friday probably the best prescription for them.
- 20:52While the young guys that haven't had a ton of reps that
- 20:55aren't completely banged up, get them out there.
- 20:58Get them practicing with the first group as much of them that
- 21:02are Icing and just make sure that they're getting to run
- 21:06through reps against live competition.
- 21:08I think that's what's going to be good for the bye week because
- 21:11you know we've said it depth is a concern this year and the more
- 21:16guys we can bring along faster, the better it's going to be in
- 21:19the long run and some of that's going to be the wide receiver
- 21:24group, where we've got our big three of kind of played a shit
- 21:28ton of snaps. Yes, they have.
- 21:30Where everybody else is not so much.
- 21:34But we're also talking about across the defensive line,
- 21:36especially defensive end and probably the other one is
- 21:41offensive line, right? So absolutely, you know,
- 21:46something else you mentioned Brian, other than the rest and
- 21:49stuff like that is talked about, this is a week, the coaches can
- 21:52start reviewing their skiing and what to do, and how they make
- 21:56adjustments. There's a lot of adjustments
- 21:58needed. And then he kind of asked the
- 22:01question, what steps can you take to improve?
- 22:03Are you asking too much of your players?
- 22:06You know, I sit here and in the players are put in the position
- 22:10that you asked me to be in. Could execution, be better?
- 22:14Yes. But the whole piece is.
- 22:19You've had this is where you've had a full spring.
- 22:21You've had a full summer session.
- 22:22You had a full fall and if you're still saying there or
- 22:26we're asking our players to do too much, That should have been
- 22:30answered when you got default camp.
- 22:33Not the 4th week into the season.
- 22:38Yeah and I think some of that speaks back to the depth right
- 22:41because when you don't have depth you kind of start asking
- 22:47more of the guys that know what they're doing, have the
- 22:50experience and things like that. And sometimes They're physically
- 22:57ready to take that on but they may not be ready to do that week
- 23:02to week, right? Yeah.
- 23:04And so you can see it happened in practice but when you put it
- 23:07on a game you don't be too weak. So that's where the
- 23:09inconsistencies can show up and sometimes putting too much on a
- 23:13player can win that start showing up in a game, that's
- 23:16when you see it. So that maybe what he's speaking
- 23:18to there, and it's hard to replicate some of that in
- 23:22practice. So, getting game tape and then
- 23:24Waiting that way is really the only way to kind of encapsulate
- 23:27that they said they saw it last year with Blackshear and they
- 23:33made some adjustments in the offseason.
- 23:35So sometimes the only way to really see that is by having the
- 23:38tape and seeing that. Okay, well, looks like he's
- 23:41pressing here or, you know, he's trying to do too much here or
- 23:44whatever it may be, and I'm staking a little bit off, you
- 23:49know, throwing The Change-Up might be the better option
- 23:52there. It's very true.
- 23:54And but the only thing about that Brian is your four games in
- 23:57and you get deeper is the more basic or this is my opinion.
- 24:02The more basic you become on either side of the ball easier
- 24:06for defense has easy for offenses to key in on what
- 24:08you're doing, easier for them to attack you or for being in the
- 24:12right spot when you attack to get you minimal gain.
- 24:15So it's that it's a catch-22, right?
- 24:18Well, yeah. And some of this isn't
- 24:20necessarily trimming back Responsibilities sometimes it
- 24:24can just be focusing on the things you're doing well.
- 24:29More than the things where you know you're struggling with so
- 24:34some of that's going to be selection some of its going to
- 24:36be addition by subtraction, but some of its just going to be,
- 24:40we're going to say we're going to keep that in our back pocket
- 24:42until we absolutely need it. Instead of throwing it out
- 24:44there, you know, multiple times a game?
- 24:47Exactly. All right, he took complete
- 24:50ownership. We already mentioned it.
- 24:52We're not scoring enough. When he took complete ownership
- 24:54saying, we had left a ton of points on the field and not
- 24:58being manufactured at the rate. They won't.
- 25:00It was good to hear him say that.
- 25:03And then, you know, then he talked about evaluating the
- 25:07coaches during the bye week, right?
- 25:09Yep. What they can improve.
- 25:11And I know Brian, he did something that you liked a lot
- 25:16with what he asks his coaches. Yeah, I mean, so this is this is
- 25:21a technique that a lot of a lot of manager.
- 25:23Good managers do is that, you know, they'll last questions of
- 25:28folks that they already know the answer to wanting them to
- 25:33communicate how they feel so that, they make sure that
- 25:36they're on the same page that a lot of times, you know, the
- 25:40classic thing is, you know, when you assume something, you make
- 25:42an ass out of you and me, you don't want to assume that you're
- 25:45on the same page with your coaching staff.
- 25:47You want to have some To confirmation.
- 25:50So, in lack of actual verbal, communication of that asking
- 25:56those types of questions, kind of gets that ball rolling,
- 25:58right? It absolutely does.
- 26:00Because if, you know, he has a question, he expects in
- 26:05answering this format in this box and one of the coaches is
- 26:09over here. Well, first of all.
- 26:14Does that make sense where he is, right?
- 26:17That's the, you get outside the box thinking, don't get me
- 26:19wrong. You can think outside the box
- 26:22and be right, and maybe had shine some light on things, but
- 26:26it's when they're over here, and the answer is not close to what
- 26:30you're looking for. You guys start kind of bringing
- 26:32them in into a better point of what we've been talking about,
- 26:36if the execution issues, right? If the execution issues are
- 26:41happening at certain position, those guys aren't giving those
- 26:44answers that he's looking for. Then you can start unraveling
- 26:48like, okay, now I can see why we're having the issues here and
- 26:52there, so me it's a very good technique, so I'm not even gonna
- 26:58it's a good managerial technique.
- 27:01Hopefully, something will come to light of it, but we'll see.
- 27:05We talked about third down, he said he wants to see improved on
- 27:08both sides of the ball for the defense, okay?
- 27:16Um, They literally stopping people a pretty much elite clip.
- 27:22So we're going to toss that away maybe even just for the offense
- 27:25because again we've already talked about the offense, it's
- 27:29not good but it's also the number of times they're getting
- 27:32to third down and to me it's for the number of times.
- 27:36I think the number of times on the, on the defense side of the
- 27:39ball is is fine. And you know, I think it's been
- 27:45it's been good to see that. There has been an improved point
- 27:49of emphasis of improving third down efficiency because that was
- 27:54awful last year on both sides of the ball in a lot of ways.
- 27:58So, having Improvement really on the efficiency side of things on
- 28:03offense and defense from 2020, has been a good sign of things
- 28:07to come. There, we just need to piece
- 28:09together consistency, right? So, when our back has been
- 28:14against the wall, the offenses has been okay at keeping drives
- 28:18alive, but You know, we've been so inconsistent first and second
- 28:22down that it's really hard to keep that conversion clip going
- 28:27through just need to. We need to be be a lot better.
- 28:30And part of the reason that we're so good on third Downs
- 28:33that we're having a lot of them because we don't have any
- 28:35explosive plays. Yeah.
- 28:39We're we don't we don't yet we don't have any explosive plays
- 28:42at all. I think I mean kavion punt
- 28:45returns probably the most explosive play all year.
- 28:48Then you look at like holsten's TD.
- 28:50He catch their explosive but they're not, they're not
- 28:55Buster's. When I say a bus to I'm talking
- 28:57like a 40 plus because 40 plus yards completely change,
- 29:02everything changes field position, it changes play called
- 29:04Dynamics If you're at the right spot obviously on the field.
- 29:09You almost feel like we're in scoring position now.
- 29:13Yeah. I mean it's definitely
- 29:14definitely isn't Khalil Herbert on the outside Zone finding an
- 29:18ally, slipping one tackle getting to the sidelines and
- 29:21just out running everybody, we're not doing that this year.
- 29:24Not at all the opportunities. I think are there.
- 29:27They just have to get consistently and put the guys in
- 29:30the right spots. Alright Braun.
- 29:34Hey John. How's it going?
- 29:35John? All right.
- 29:38What did I say earlier? Just want to put this back on.
- 29:42Now earlier in the preseason, about all these young wide
- 29:48receivers he's and he was hyping on to the Moon.
- 29:51Yep. And we've seen barely any from
- 29:55Jalen Jones, Dwayne Lofton and very little Joy, Jane call you,
- 30:00it's finally starting to come on the last couple weeks.
- 30:03Well, here's what I'm going to go with Brian.
- 30:05If I hear him, say that, if he's here next year and I hear him
- 30:08say it. My first thought is where he's
- 30:11talking about at least two of those guys are injured because
- 30:15that Jen is the case, Jalen Jones, injured, getting close to
- 30:21coming back, Jaden pay. You'd obviously, we saw him on
- 30:24the field, the last couple weeks but was fighting a hamstring
- 30:28injury, so I Limited in terms of the snap count because of that
- 30:32hammies. It looks like he is plotting his
- 30:34way into Health at this point like the ham.
- 30:37He's good to go, just he's not quite full speed in terms of
- 30:41getting his conditioning and everything back where it needs
- 30:43to be Jalen. Obviously been injured since
- 30:49pretty much the end of fall Camp, so been nice to know.
- 30:54No, some of that information as to why he's not seeing the field
- 30:57and do on Lofton, I mean, he's had had some good run out there.
- 31:03But I mean, in terms of consistency, you know, we've had
- 31:08to be on Robinson has probably been our most.
- 31:10Consistent receiver, whereas trays been the bigger play
- 31:13threat. Yeah, Tavian has been the most
- 31:15consistent threat. So it's he Loft and probably
- 31:20hasn't quite as many opportunities one with with tabi
- 31:24on having that much success on the field.
- 31:26So we definitely need to rotate them in because we cannot have
- 31:30those big three you know, along with Caleb's.
- 31:32Smith, they're playing 85% of the snaps in this office needs
- 31:39to be, at least like at least down 10 percentage points,
- 31:42right? Yeah.
- 31:43You want to see him only, you'd like to see them on the field
- 31:46for productive plays? I would say between, Eight and
- 31:51twelve actual plays. So at least one what would be
- 31:55one fold drive and we're not even close to that.
- 31:58I mean Lofton has one catch in four games, so he's been on the
- 32:01field a few times but again, it goes back to utilization Brian
- 32:06utilization and they're not utilizing them correctly and
- 32:11hopefully we'll pay you coming back.
- 32:14Especially having this week off and lean up the next week.
- 32:16Hopefully the coming-out parties against Notre Dame, which I'm
- 32:19sure you saw today is a celebration.
- 32:21All out. So now that one early announce
- 32:24the very which is not shocking, it's not shocking whatsoever.
- 32:28For also be a ton of people putting those on a secondary
- 32:30Market. Essentially selling those
- 32:32tickets to pay for next year's full season tickets.
- 32:36Yeah. And, and, and kinda bad move.
- 32:39I respect you. I respect the hustle.
- 32:41Exactly 7:00. 7:30, I mean, that's that's a weekend if you
- 32:47do, it will pick one next year, and they'll buy next year for
- 32:51the Winning seasons tickets and it'll go on and on like that.
- 32:54All right. I mentioned a few things about
- 32:56Braxton. Now, he talked about, he needed
- 32:59to reach another level of efficiency in sort of
- 33:03self-ownership saying, you know, it's our job to get in there
- 33:08again. I feel like in these, this press
- 33:11conference, I've heard more, you know, owning things, then maybe
- 33:16in the previous five years combined anytime I like The
- 33:21language, but if I don't see change, then it's just, it's all
- 33:24for naught. Yeah.
- 33:26Lip service, isn't it? It is, I appreciate the
- 33:31ownership show. Me, well, I would have to, you
- 33:35would have gotten a whole lot more respect from the ownership
- 33:37two to three years ago. I'm past just owning it being
- 33:41okay, show me show you something.
- 33:45But I mean, as he highlighted, the, I mean, the big thing is
- 33:48that, you know, we have done overall, a really good job of
- 33:50protecting the Ball. Well, yeah.
- 33:53And then that alone that alone is probably this offense as much
- 33:59as any that. You know what, we what we are
- 34:01able to generate, you know, we, you know, we have we haven't
- 34:06done a whole lot of we've shot ourselves in the foot, in other
- 34:08ways, but we have not shot ourselves in the foot and in
- 34:11giving the ball over in key areas.
- 34:13So, one time, one time, when we decided to put the backup
- 34:17quarterback at the 6 yard line, which tells me a lot about who's
- 34:20paying Tension out there. But yeah if you know you take
- 34:25that playaway just Braxton, it's been three in four games.
- 34:30And can I be honest? That's why we're three in one.
- 34:36if you say we were at somewhere between, if we were at Double
- 34:40that or put a few more turnovers on the board, Two and two.
- 34:45Probably lost UNC. So, you know, again, it's a mean
- 34:52the game against Richmond, was way closer than we wanted to be.
- 34:54I mean, we never felt like truly threatened, but at the same time
- 34:58it was close enough where, you know, you had to think about it,
- 35:01right? Exactly, um, he mentioned the
- 35:05coastal being good for us even if it's not good.
- 35:10For the conference conference is just completely down this year.
- 35:13Could someone get in, yes, The only reason I say that Braun.
- 35:18Everything in a mentioned this to people heard on the radio,
- 35:24this is smelling like 2007 again.
- 35:27We're hearing, it's constant chaos, top tens teams are losing
- 35:33every week in this with it. I think we're going to see that.
- 35:39So we're going to probably see at some point.
- 35:42It's going to level out where we're going to see a few less
- 35:45but then as soon as it gets close to rivalry week again, You
- 35:48going to see it ratchet right back?
- 35:50It's going to go through the roof.
- 35:52And you remember Robert week of those seven, just, I mean, like
- 35:56LSU lose an Arkansas and that crane, weird.
- 36:00A McFadden went just nuts. Yep.
- 36:03Then LS, you still got in the national championship game.
- 36:06Um, I do also like this from filling day.
- 36:09He talked about how by weeks have changed for him, and it
- 36:12didn't, he didn't really used to believe, they were any
- 36:15different. And now he does. think that's
- 36:19just now some guy who has coached close to twenty years
- 36:25where in the beginning it's probably I just want to keep the
- 36:27guys going and keep them involved and keep them where now
- 36:31it's Well now I can step back. I can let the kids breathe.
- 36:38I like the program breathing, step back and look at what's
- 36:41going wrong. Now, I record out of the by
- 36:45weeks not the greatest, I wouldn't three, the last three
- 36:49seasons. So hopefully he reflects upon
- 36:52something and he changes on this week to result in a win.
- 36:58Yeah, we haven't been great out of buys last three years.
- 37:03Really for years, I think. Four in a row.
- 37:06We've lost a couple of those have been against decent to
- 37:11above-average competition but a couple of those were stinkers.
- 37:15So you know when you play a Notre Dame coming out of a by
- 37:22this will be what the second time we played Notre Dame coming
- 37:24out of a by and yep played an 18 and yep until the Willis
- 37:30fumblerooski. Was within three now.
- 37:36What's your point game? He fumbled it.
- 37:37They go score 10. Come out the second half, pop
- 37:41that big playoff and optimism. Yeah, the next thing you know,
- 37:46it's it's still a good game because we continue to fight but
- 37:50you know and then last year the such a funky year.
- 37:54Oh yeah. Last year we had play Clemson.
- 37:56Yep. So so it's one of those things
- 38:00like Like yes, he's 013. But then on the other hand, you
- 38:07get to say what he also had to play two playoff teams.
- 38:12The other two, I don't Duke was one of them was Georgia Tech one
- 38:15of them. Georgia Tech not in 19.
- 38:22That was dude. That was do you okay?
- 38:26Yeah, probably because everybody's like is when you
- 38:28make the quarterback change because you have two weeks.
- 38:29Yeah, so in reality of the three seasons, it's been two Elite
- 38:34teams and Duke and we know what was happening in 19 in that
- 38:38room. So again, let's hope he figures
- 38:42out the right him, getting things 7 to nothing. 17, was
- 38:46Georgia, Tech, and I think that was just an average Georgia Tech
- 38:50Team. So yeah, very likely.
- 38:53All right, well, let's jump. Off the head coach, let's go
- 38:55over to the defensive room. Brian J Hamm, he opened up
- 38:58talking about the linebacker room.
- 39:00Would you hear from him? I mean likes Dak says he kind of
- 39:07quarterback of the defense, bring the energy and effort the
- 39:09passion, really likes the way Tisdale's coming along in the
- 39:15defense. Both of them have done a good
- 39:18job, leading the team in tackles, you know, wanted to
- 39:22there. So I think that's big huge.
- 39:24Somehow, you know, when you're inside linebackers and I know in
- 39:27general, this is a good thing when you're inside, linebackers
- 39:29are leading the team in tackles, that's what you like to see,
- 39:32means they're taking care of the trash, not a lot, skidding past
- 39:34the second level of the defense, so that's good.
- 39:37And he talked about, you know, he shot an artist and Indian
- 39:42getting in there and, and making some noise in the opportunities.
- 39:46They've had. They've absolutely made noise.
- 39:48I mean, we've seen little, if no drop-off on those two, guys are
- 39:52on the field subbing Which is really good because dachshund
- 39:56tis do play, a tons of special teams play.
- 39:59So having two guys that you trust to just go out there and
- 40:03run your defense. I wish he would have mentioned a
- 40:08little more about Tomorrow, he's role as playing that nickel Mike
- 40:14or the nickel linebacker position because that has really
- 40:17helped us to defend significantly.
- 40:19Should be talked about more on how he's went to that, but he
- 40:22hasn't and again, we talked about it earlier and I think you
- 40:27said you were a little nervous about what a little nervous
- 40:30about Dean and Keyshawn. They've alleviated all worries
- 40:34that is probably the best death room.
- 40:37Maybe in the entire team is the linebacker room.
- 40:41Hi brownie, maybe Corner, maybe Corner would be the only other
- 40:44one. I feel like you can meet on, you
- 40:47know, five or six years ago. It's true then.
- 40:49Alright, the next thing I talked about was he was talking about,
- 40:55you know, he was giving the complimentary feel position,
- 40:57chili calling out Peter Moore and it is true, right?
- 41:02Ron the, for the back of team up, the more opportunities, it's
- 41:06the defense is going to attack, you're not on your heels, you're
- 41:09not thinking about In play and shoot, they can take it to the
- 41:12house. And again, we've we mentioned we
- 41:16continue to mention Peter More Steam and I know he's a punter,
- 41:18y'all, but their football players to in the way.
- 41:22We've had a play ball this year. He has been a weapon.
- 41:28And for the defense, I'm sure when they see all right, Pete's,
- 41:31gonna boot one, we're going, we're going to have them inside
- 41:33the 15 and if they make a boo-boo we're going to be able
- 41:37to force a turnover and be on the doorstep.
- 41:41Yeah, that's been the big thing. I know we've talked about it
- 41:44already, but Peter more, flipping the field for us,
- 41:49really, not really a known quantity in terms of what to
- 41:53expect from him this year, right?
- 41:55Well we really didn't know what to expect and he's really come
- 41:58out and answered all, the all the bells that have been kind of
- 42:01putting his way there, except for throwing a 25 yard pass to
- 42:08Dorian strong on the fake punt. That's about the only negative
- 42:13play he's and I think he's had maybe one other one punt the
- 42:16whole season that wasn't what like 40 + yd.
- 42:20So he's been bun. Mmm.
- 42:25And doing a good job just kind of you know controlling emotions
- 42:31and the heat of those moments. So kudos to him.
- 42:35Exactly. Alright then he sort of talked
- 42:38about this week just to self Scout a little bit.
- 42:43You know I like the way he talked about basically Carolina,
- 42:47they played with Reckless abandon For that being in the
- 42:52last three game, they have played a little more
- 42:56conservative, might have cost us.
- 42:57It was specifically talking about up front, right?
- 43:00Yafeng 7 right there at the defensive line and he was also
- 43:05kind of talking about how the other offensive has.
- 43:08He's not been able to go as Reckless, which is good, which
- 43:12tells me ham, understands, I can't can't.
- 43:16I cannot attack this type of offense.
- 43:19This is going to be. This isn't a slugfest, it's
- 43:22almost think of a boxer, right? You've got guys like Floyd
- 43:27Mayweather who can jab box, not going to knock you out, but
- 43:30going to win the fight. Yep.
- 43:33And then you've got guys like Tyson would knock you out.
- 43:36Then you kind of guys had guys there in the middle, you know,
- 43:39if you, if you think back you look way back.
- 43:42You think you like Sugar, Ray Robinson, who were just
- 43:45technical Fighters, but could lay the boom on you when they
- 43:48needed to? Yeah.
- 43:50So what I'm seeing from ham and I'll take that analogy.
- 43:53Is he knows. We can throw this at these guys.
- 43:59It's not going to hurt us. He knows I got to be careful
- 44:04these, this team can make a big play.
- 44:07So again, it just shows you sort of the the intelligence he has
- 44:12on defense knowing, you know, I can slug.
- 44:16I could jab on this team. If we get up 10, I can talk
- 44:19don't hate makers. Yeah, I think that's good.
- 44:23Kind of, knowing knowing where to dial up, you know, that
- 44:27aggressiveness and we talked about the line of Carolina and,
- 44:34you know, when you look at them, statistically it Makes sense.
- 44:37Why you throwing it out there because, you know, some of the
- 44:40grades on their running backs. Last year were through the roof,
- 44:44but the grades on their offensive line were consistently
- 44:48below. So their running backs were
- 44:51making the line look good. And they, I mean ham essentially
- 44:56made the wager that they'll be fine at running back, but
- 45:00they're not going to be what they were last year.
- 45:02We can take some chances and, you know, they might break one
- 45:05here, one there. There, we feel better about
- 45:07ourselves on the back end to make sure that doesn't turn into
- 45:10a big play. Let's get aggressive and try to
- 45:13force some of those tackles for loss and they did exactly.
- 45:17All right. Brian, he really went pretty
- 45:20deep into the DL defensive line talking about how it's been
- 45:25really key, how he's rotated, guys.
- 45:27He gave credit to, he gave credit to Monsters Inc.
- 45:34On the defensive line lesson, one of the players that in the
- 45:39pressures today you've got the big guy Jace.
- 45:42Do you got the little guy Bill, right?
- 45:45Yep. The Monsters Inc, defensive line
- 45:47coach is really keeping that rotation good.
- 45:49Keeping guys fresh. And then obviously, the
- 45:52questions came up about bar know, you know, we know bar no
- 45:55logged on the stat sheet last week.
- 45:58But you know what, did, what he had to say?
- 46:02What did you feel? Feel is going on with bar, no
- 46:06right now. So he talked about how they're
- 46:09running directly at him with the running game, a lot, and sliding
- 46:14protection to him in the passing game.
- 46:17So that's taken that's taking him out of some some of the
- 46:20plays but that's also meaning that other guys on that
- 46:24defensive line or having more one-on-one opportunities.
- 46:27So I mean overall you know you love having a guy that's filling
- 46:31up the stat sheet but you I would rather have that defensive
- 46:35line is a unit pulling pulling numbers.
- 46:37And as long as they keep doing what they are doing, I think we
- 46:41can keep it rolling. You know, would like to see him
- 46:44adjust a little bit more to kind of, what is being thrown at him,
- 46:48so he can kind of get back into the impact player level there,
- 46:53but it makes sense to see the drop-off based on how they're
- 46:56playing him. Now, I like that he seems to be
- 47:00adjusting a little bit. I like I said I think I
- 47:02mentioned in the Richmond recap, you know seeing him walk down,
- 47:07you know rushing. Play, you know, 15, 20 yards,
- 47:09downfield. So, you know, he still finding
- 47:12ways to even when he's blocked even when he's managed initially
- 47:15to still get in there and make a play.
- 47:18So, that's good to see. And the other thing Jam talked
- 47:22about on the defensive line is that cold Nelson is starting to
- 47:24come along. Yes, he is.
- 47:26And getting getting him in. There is going to be pretty big.
- 47:29I like the analogy used their High motor low-maintenance, the
- 47:37motor. He About like they have to talk
- 47:39about shutting him down and I told you you go back and
- 47:42reminisce and the stories from 2002, that it reminds you of a
- 47:46lot of what people said about tap.
- 47:48Yep. And in that build coming in.
- 47:52He's similarly, built to Darrell, unfortunately, he
- 47:56missed that one year of getting coach fine, but yeah, Cole
- 47:58Nelson is officially part of the defensive end rotation now.
- 48:03And then something else that maybe didn't shock, may be
- 48:05shocked. A lot of people, if you didn't
- 48:06hear, Wilfred Panay has been making noise.
- 48:10Well, from Pune is pushing for playing time and right?
- 48:15I think you mentioned back in the summer, you were like, well,
- 48:19with his body. It's a chance that he could take
- 48:22a big step. Yeah.
- 48:25And it's good to see him picking up things in a similar fashion
- 48:28to the speed. That that bar, no picked up
- 48:30things. Last offseason, you know,
- 48:33hopefully, we can start seeing you in the field probably in
- 48:36terms of size. As a little more aligned with
- 48:39the traditional size and speed of a defensive end, not quite
- 48:44the freak athlete of bar, no, but but definitely athletic and
- 48:48can make some plays there. So I'm looking forward to seeing
- 48:51what he can bring to the table now that we've kind of
- 48:53on-boarded him to that defensive end position.
- 48:56Absolutely. And Brian you mentioned about
- 48:57them running at bar know you would kind of think the guy
- 49:00who's been in that position it's going to hurt us now we're we
- 49:04have went almost 50 yards or less per A game rushing almost a
- 49:09full yard per attempt down last year, we were about at five this
- 49:13year about it for, so clearly them running at him.
- 49:16He's obviously holding up in that which is great to hear, not
- 49:20only for the defense in general, but for him in general because
- 49:23we know he has to pass rush skills.
- 49:26He starts showing where he is a good run Defender, the stocks
- 49:30going higher and higher with them.
- 49:32Well, I think the thing is like, you know, they are running at
- 49:34him which does neutralize him to a point but he's not The fact
- 49:39he's not getting blown out where it's creating craters in the
- 49:43defense at other levels. I think that definitely bodes,
- 49:46well, long term because it means that, you know, yes, he is, he's
- 49:49not necessarily being able to impact the play, but he's not
- 49:52getting taken out of the play where he's creating problems for
- 49:55other players on defense. Very true.
- 49:58All right, let's flip it over it.
- 49:59Let's talk about the corn presser and let's talk about the
- 50:04offensive line first for on your bed and butter.
- 50:06There he And we need more than five guys.
- 50:09Well, we had more than five guys.
- 50:12And then somehow We ran people away.
- 50:18Nestor obviously, starting to run.
- 50:20It West Virginia and Hudson significantly in the rotation in
- 50:25Louisville. Where, you know, if you have
- 50:26those guys, you don't have to talk about depth.
- 50:29You are deep if because you had Kate and take the step up, if
- 50:33Johnny transfer in, you're probably as deep as you were
- 50:36last year. Yeah.
- 50:37And I'm not sure if you have a Johnny transfer in if you have
- 50:40those other two guys that that's up in the air, but, you know,
- 50:43you're at least solid in your Verse 5 and have one swing guy.
- 50:47You can count on with Caden stepping into that other role
- 50:52probably still would be a little questionable at tackle, just
- 50:55because you'd probably end up having to have Nestor be kind of
- 50:59a guard tackle combo because we were going to be thin at tackle
- 51:03this year. Almost regardless, the question
- 51:07at this point is going to be, would Nestor playing a tackle,
- 51:10whether it be right or left have made this line a significant
- 51:14upgrade or would it Then on the similar level, that we've been
- 51:17at, I think you would have definitely been a little better.
- 51:20Yeah. Because thank, you know, even
- 51:23though he does occasionally struggle in past Pro, I think,
- 51:26you know, his his floor and passed Pros a lot higher than
- 51:29some of the others we've seen so far.
- 51:32And, you know, we know he's good in the run in the Run game so I
- 51:37would have liked to see what that could have been.
- 51:39But, you know, alas, it didn't work out that way.
- 51:43So, you know, we're dealing with this situation.
- 51:45Beijing where we've got brought kind of moving all over the
- 51:49line. The last couple weeks you played
- 51:53some right tackle against West Virginia played left guard,
- 51:57almost primarily against Richmond, hasn't had a great
- 52:02year so far, I think he definitely would like to place a
- 52:09lot more consistently than he's played this year.
- 52:12He's not playing at the level, he was playing.
- 52:15Last year and last year, he played at a pretty good level,
- 52:18but he cost us with, with the mental stuff.
- 52:21Yeah, that's intuitive. The mental is went away, but
- 52:24he's not, he's not impacting the game with his physicality in the
- 52:28same way. And that we need to find a
- 52:30balance with that, you know, I don't know if, if gearing down
- 52:34has caused his intensity to kind of go away in the between the
- 52:38whistles or what, but he's not playing at that same level, so
- 52:43it's very true now. Brad mentioned that they're
- 52:47looking at getting Silas back into the rotation, I'm assuming
- 52:50that's going to be Notre Dame, but then for Wednesday
- 52:53mentioned, he liked the starting five, there were out there on
- 52:57Saturday. I'm blending these two together.
- 53:01Brian. Do you think when we come out
- 53:03against Notre Dame? Do you think our line is lettuce
- 53:08myth? That left tackle Rockoff minute
- 53:11left guard, Johnny, its Center Silas Dan Z.
- 53:14At Right Guard, Luke 2 Nu du at right.
- 53:17Tackle with obviously came or getting some snaps and
- 53:22potentially maybe Tyrell Smith or maybe not Tyrell Smith
- 53:25getting some snaps. I think more than likely, they
- 53:30keep Lucy this Smith at left tackle, I think that is going to
- 53:35okay, give us the most consistently because it gives us
- 53:38our best overall lineman at the most important position, right?
- 53:44Yeah. Because even, even with tackles
- 53:48that are true, tackles that have a little bit more, little bit
- 53:51more speed getting out of the snap.
- 53:55He's not he's not any worse off than they are.
- 53:58And he's been much more consistent both in the past game
- 54:02and the Run game and the in terms of his protection that
- 54:05really, anybody else on the line, I would definitely keep
- 54:08his consistency at that left tackle position and then kind of
- 54:13fill in everywhere else, you know, Brock despite his kind of
- 54:17subpar play overall. Definitely gives us flexibility
- 54:20there because he can play across the entire interior of the line
- 54:25and slide out to tackle if absolutely necessary.
- 54:28Yeah. So, that gives you a little bit
- 54:30little options there. So, yeah, I would definitely
- 54:32keep Lucy. This myth out there at left
- 54:34tackle and then kind of figure out what other makeup of the
- 54:37line is kind of your best five, and hopefully have one or two
- 54:41guys in the hole that can kind of slide in when necessary or
- 54:45get you whether to give a breather or whether to jump in.
- 54:48If there's a Nick that's you know somebody has to come out of
- 54:50the game. Exactly.
- 54:53All right. Next thing we're going to live.
- 54:54He did make a few comments about Braxton.
- 54:57I want to hit on a couple of those Those brine.
- 54:59All right, first of all, he admitted completely.
- 55:02He is disappointed in how Braxton's played the first four
- 55:05games. You know, he did kind of admit.
- 55:09He has to look in the mirror himself on that too.
- 55:11He also admitted that there's still a chance for him to take a
- 55:15step and that step is definitely needed in the next coming, eight
- 55:18games because 23 points are not going to cut it, but he talked
- 55:22about his athleticism has helped them now, Brian you said
- 55:26something to me? Right?
- 55:29You're a little bit upset about well, yeah, he has this but
- 55:33Brad, you're not helping him. Yeah, I think that's that's the
- 55:38thing I'd like to see is that we need to make out the gate and I
- 55:43think this is what, what frustrates me the most is that
- 55:46we need to get Braxton comfortable out, the gate, and
- 55:50keep him comfortable in that second drive because we've had,
- 55:53we've seen him have success on an opening drive.
- 55:56I've seen him come out a little flat when he's had success.
- 56:01We haven't seen that coupled with a second drive that kind of
- 56:03gives him that confidence where he's really building a pain that
- 56:07I think at this point we need to be a little bit better with with
- 56:12the script and with how we how we get into our second drive and
- 56:16and make that a little more consistent get, you know, get up
- 56:1910 points, get up, 14 points, get to scores, you know, in the
- 56:24first quarter and start putting pressure, not only on the other
- 56:29team, but also give Braxton the confidence where that, you know,
- 56:32if they do come back and put some points on the board, he's
- 56:35ready to go out there and move the Ball down the field again.
- 56:38You know, some of its confidence I got playing with confidence is
- 56:42willing to take a little more calculated risk and some of that
- 56:45is what's needed right now as well.
- 56:48You know, pulling the trigger when guys are open but it's
- 56:51tight, pulling the trigger. When, you know, you may not be
- 56:56able to make the most accurate throw, but if a guy's wide-open,
- 57:01try to get it out there to him, I think we need to see a little
- 57:05bit more of that. That I don't want to see
- 57:07risk-taking necessarily in terms of putting the ball in danger
- 57:10but you know, he can sling the ball, he's got the capability,
- 57:15he's not going to drive it down field, you know 45 50 yards on a
- 57:19dime outside the numbers, but he can throw an accurate ball
- 57:23within that you know, that 30 40 yard range.
- 57:27You know, when he needs to and we need to let him rip it a
- 57:30little bit more and rip it with confidence.
- 57:33Because when he grips with confidence, it looks a lot
- 57:35better than He's out there and looks like he's really
- 57:37overthinking. What he's doing with the
- 57:39football. Well it looks a little profit
- 57:42explained with confidence. It's the UNC game especially
- 57:45first half when we start with see it's UVA last year's, its
- 57:50most of the Clemson game, I mean, it's weird when he's in
- 57:54his bag he looks, it looks okay, it's not great, but it looks, it
- 57:59looks good. You're fine with it.
- 58:00Well, the whole piece of it is, when he starts easy, think about
- 58:05the UNCA, Game, we started with some easy, swing passes, a
- 58:09couple easy, you know, relatively easy outside passes
- 58:13and the next thing you know, you talk about that 45-yard past the
- 58:17tree where he put on the money he felt good.
- 58:20He felt like I'm going to hit my passes when you put them in
- 58:24situations where your he's not like that.
- 58:27You can see it and it's in his body language and I'll tell you
- 58:29something else run when we were watching that interview Corns.
- 58:34Body language is not good. I got a feeling probably Sunday
- 58:39is Fuente was talking about asking question you think he got
- 58:42dressed down? I think there were definitely a
- 58:46lot of questions asked that he didn't necessarily have the
- 58:48right on the, on the, the right. Wavelength answer for corn
- 58:54definitely looked like he embedded been a long week for
- 58:58him so far and it was you know, Tuesday worse.
- 59:03So That's going to be interesting to see how that
- 59:06develops going forward to see if corn makes any sort of wholesale
- 59:11adjustments to get Braxton more comfortable or whether it's
- 59:15going to be kind of the same old.
- 59:17Same old, just repetition repetition and hope it.
- 59:21Hope it works out exactly. And I'm not discounting
- 59:24repetition. Repetition is important.
- 59:26If you don't wrap it, it's hard to get.
- 59:28But at some point, we're four weeks into the season.
- 59:34We should have seen it, click into place a little bit faster
- 59:37so I'm hoping that something changes that causes that click
- 59:40to happen. Well, it's got to be some now in
- 59:44all, in all honesty, I'm going to, I'm going to, I'm going to,
- 59:46I'm going to wrap this segment with this statement by me and
- 59:49you looked at it and said, okay, the ownerships there, right?
- 59:52Yep. He, he, he said this, and it
- 59:56basically says, this means all of us have All of us kind of
- 1:00:01taking a good hard. Look in the mirror.
- 1:00:02Starting with me. Thank goodness.
- 1:00:04He said, starting with me because it is you because you
- 1:00:08are the offensive coordinator and just continue to find ways
- 1:00:11to continue to help each guy get better more consistent, which
- 1:00:14was a theme of the entire press conference.
- 1:00:16For most of the guys and finding the best way to put our guys in
- 1:00:19positions and have the chance to make plays.
- 1:00:24He's got to do it now. And the reality is, if
- 1:00:28everything goes right Or not everything goes, right?
- 1:00:33If if things are truly looked at hard this week, I do think we
- 1:00:38might not hear about it but there should be a change and
- 1:00:43whether that's going to be in the red zone, or something like
- 1:00:46that, you know? Got to make a choice there.
- 1:00:49Brian. Right.
- 1:00:51Okay. I know we're going to get into
- 1:00:54this a little bit more after the break here, but we are cozies
- 1:01:02Hey maybe one case had cozies a ton, but but you know, before we
- 1:01:09actually dive into it but before we dive into Brian's review of
- 1:01:12essentially, the foo foundations of offense, we are going to take
- 1:01:16a quick balls for a message from our digital Partners.
- 1:01:20All right guys, as we mentioned at the top of the program, Brian
- 1:01:24did some deep dive analysis. On the Justin Fuente, offense
- 1:01:31looking at TCU and his early days, in at the Memphis offense,
- 1:01:34and brown pointed out a niche and I started scratching it.
- 1:01:38Hey, I found something just, you know, just type something into
- 1:01:42Google and things pop up, and it's like, oh, that's an hour
- 1:01:46and then Brian types of up, that's an hour and 20 minutes
- 1:01:50that's an hour. Next thing you know, bronze
- 1:01:52hitting triple speed, trying to watch multiple videos.
- 1:01:55So Brian, let's start here. We're going to take a look back
- 1:01:58at TCU from 2010 2010, was essentially, the making of who
- 1:02:04Justin Fuente was, and how he got here.
- 1:02:08Yeah. Well, Andy, Dalton, Jeremy
- 1:02:10Kerley, and absolute Stout Gary Patterson defense at TCU they go
- 1:02:16undefeated, they win the Rose Bowl beating Wisconsin who had
- 1:02:20JJ Watt amongst others on that defense that year and Brian you
- 1:02:26looked at the Air Force. Game in the Oregon State game,
- 1:02:31Oregon state that year was a pretty good team.
- 1:02:34They were ranked when they played them.
- 1:02:35So I'm going to kind of let you go and tell me what you saw on
- 1:02:41the tape. Yeah so I'll be I'll start this
- 1:02:44off. I know we mentioned a little bit
- 1:02:45earlier but this kind of came to fruition as a result of
- 1:02:50listening to the Jerrod Evans interview on Davi Fridays.
- 1:02:56That was kind of the Some of the comments made about the offense
- 1:03:00of Paxton Lynch relative to what Jerrod the keys that Gerard was
- 1:03:05given when he got to Virginia Tech and and the juxtaposition,
- 1:03:09there was kind of what got this thing rolling in my head would
- 1:03:12cause Curtis to start digging and then what caused me to spend
- 1:03:16several hours watching Tate. It's kind of the culmination of
- 1:03:21all that. So, yeah, that's good.
- 1:03:23I'm watching the tape but I I'm like, what are they doing?
- 1:03:29So, you know, Oregon state was, I think they open with Oregon
- 1:03:34state that year, they were, I think TCU was a top 10 team.
- 1:03:37Oregon. State was a top 25 team.
- 1:03:39Yep. When I was watching the game, I
- 1:03:41saw a bunch of previews for the Virginia Tech Boise, State game.
- 1:03:45So go ahead and, you know, cry the tears on that one real
- 1:03:49quick. But you know, so I watch those
- 1:03:53two games, not a ton of different things in those games.
- 1:03:57Um, they did have a good dose of speed option, so a little bit
- 1:04:01more run-heavy than we've seen in terms of the focal point of
- 1:04:05the offense, but the things that were different.
- 1:04:08The big thing is that they were under Center a lot, especially
- 1:04:12in short yardage plays, they ran a lot of play-action boots off.
- 1:04:15The off, the under Center looks there, they were in pistol, a
- 1:04:19lot, which we still incorporate at Virginia Tech and, you know,
- 1:04:25it kind of this is where it kind of started.
- 1:04:26So they ran Here they but they also ran obviously the inverted
- 1:04:30v r which was kind of a relatively New Concept at that
- 1:04:34time. They ran it with or without the
- 1:04:37jet motion. That's quick question.
- 1:04:42Veer explain because, you know, Because some people associate
- 1:04:48well I hear beer I think read-option there.
- 1:04:50It's different though, right? So the read option is
- 1:04:53essentially running back. Goes One Direction quarterback
- 1:04:57is reading and go in the other direction.
- 1:04:59If he decides to keep it with the Veer, you're essentially the
- 1:05:06running back of the quarterback or going the same direction,
- 1:05:08just the running back is going inside.
- 1:05:10The tackle, quarterbacks aiming point is outside the tackle and
- 1:05:13they're reading your both of them are reading the defense.
- 1:05:16Banner outside edge Defender but one is going.
- 1:05:21They're both going the same direction when they're going
- 1:05:23opposite direction. So that's kind of the
- 1:05:27difference. Their quarterback Powers did
- 1:05:30exist at TCU they were ran with Effectiveness, Andy Dalton, you
- 1:05:38know, isn't the Andy Dalton? We see today, he had a little
- 1:05:41bit more athleticism and is in his early 20s there.
- 1:05:44So, He was out there running running with good frequency and
- 1:05:50they were working a lot of the bubble screen and then running
- 1:05:52some variations off that were they would show up lock and then
- 1:05:55kind of Escape up the sideline either kind of a kind of a fade
- 1:06:02stop look or just kind of finding a soft spot in the zone
- 1:06:05there. Okay.
- 1:06:07Can I ask this Braun? We don't see here are the times
- 1:06:10we've seen in. It's been absolutely miserable
- 1:06:13failure. I think Ryan Willis in the bowl
- 1:06:14game against Cincinnati. when you go under Center in short,
- 1:06:18yardage, you know, some people say, you know, Why does it help
- 1:06:25so much? I always think you go under
- 1:06:28Center on short. Yardage a if it's third one and
- 1:06:31a half you're running back is getting a absolute full start
- 1:06:35right? We'll start line of scrimmage.
- 1:06:39Second they have to be wary of sneaks your third and one and a
- 1:06:43half. Well, if I can get the ball here
- 1:06:46and that Center can submarine. I can just find the hole and get
- 1:06:49into yours. So why aren't we incorporating
- 1:06:53that here? I mean, I think a guy like
- 1:06:55Jerrod Evans, I think it got like hitting.
- 1:06:58I mean, Quincy if your understanding those guys at one
- 1:07:01and a half or two yards, it's like the Playbook is so open
- 1:07:05because it sounds really dumb. Okay, takes time to teach
- 1:07:09quarterbacks at this level. How to take a snap, because no
- 1:07:13one's doing it at the high school level anymore, either.
- 1:07:17No one's taking the snap under Center.
- 1:07:19Very few, very few High School offenses that aren't triple
- 1:07:23option. Have guys, taking the ball in
- 1:07:25the center, which means the actual quarterbacks that sling,
- 1:07:28the ball and not just running backs playing quarterback.
- 1:07:30Have never taken an actual snap under center, right?
- 1:07:33So why would it take? It takes time to wrap and I'm
- 1:07:38guessing they just say, well it's not worth it, but I think
- 1:07:40it's absolutely worth it. Not only for their development,
- 1:07:44in terms of, you know, potential NFL careers.
- 1:07:47But just when you get the ball under Center, you're already
- 1:07:52you're half yard behind where the ball starting, instead of
- 1:07:56five yards behind where the ball starting, it's easier to push
- 1:08:01the pile. It's easier to find those gaps.
- 1:08:04You got your running back. That can kind of give you that
- 1:08:06push. You got your lime and that can
- 1:08:08get behind you and give you that push.
- 1:08:09Where, if you're trying to run that QB dive or QB power, and
- 1:08:15that short yardage play, It's a lot easier for the Lima to get
- 1:08:19penetration and make the quarterback have to kind of
- 1:08:21redirect his route there. We see that a lot.
- 1:08:25Yeah, so I would prefer us doing a little bit more with that and,
- 1:08:29you know, I can talk a little bit more about Memphis here in a
- 1:08:31little bit because they do something similar.
- 1:08:34Alright, so something else you mentioned Braun is in the me
- 1:08:38kind of what we're missing this year or easy passes and you
- 1:08:43mentioned to me I think it was like on the third or fourth.
- 1:08:46Play of that Air Force game. We looked at your like their own
- 1:08:51double digs their own double digs on the sidelines.
- 1:08:56And essentially I think what was like a scene in one guy was
- 1:08:59running a Crosser. So, why are we seeing those
- 1:09:03digs? And that E-ZPass, I know you had
- 1:09:05to pushing it down the field, but at the corners playing 10
- 1:09:09yards off and you're on a 5-yard, dig.
- 1:09:11It's hit the third, step fire, it.
- 1:09:14Put it on the right shoulder. First, you got to make a tackle.
- 1:09:17Why are we seeing easy passes? Like that for Braxton?
- 1:09:20Yeah, we're not working levels of the defense, over the middle
- 1:09:24of the field at all. They did more of that at TCU and
- 1:09:30some of that at Office. So it seems like some of these,
- 1:09:35you know, middle middle of the field levels Concepts.
- 1:09:37It's kind of kind of went the way of the dinosaur slowly from
- 1:09:422010 to. Now I'm not sure why I love a
- 1:09:45good dig. You know, whether you, whether
- 1:09:49you hear me on here or or see me on the timeline on Twitter, I am
- 1:09:53always saying put the damn dig in there. 15-yard dig should be
- 1:09:59a bread and butter route. It's so good because we're we
- 1:10:04have a decent offense where we can influence linebackers.
- 1:10:08If we don't throw the dig in there, we're just letting that
- 1:10:10space. Go to waste.
- 1:10:14And I know we run a lot of like, you know, post like slot post
- 1:10:19which kind of does something similar, but you can't work the
- 1:10:23Zone. The same way that you can with a
- 1:10:25dig where you're running all the way across the formation.
- 1:10:29So I'd like to see us be able to do that.
- 1:10:32All right? So obviously we're seeing
- 1:10:34elements that we have now still as part of his foundation back
- 1:10:38at TCU, some things aren't there, for whatever reason, we
- 1:10:42don't know that. But let's go to the Memphis
- 1:10:45years again. Don't lock the TCU years. 43
- 1:10:49points, he averaged over, the team was averaging over 40 down
- 1:10:52in Memphis when corn and Dicky. Where The Coho sees as for
- 1:10:57Wednesday was a CO C at TCU, Jerry Henderson with Jared
- 1:11:02Anderson, who was? I told you, when you said that,
- 1:11:06I look back, Back Anderson had been on the staff at TCU 15
- 1:11:09years give or take. Yep, while Dickey had been in
- 1:11:15football close to 25 when he joined that staff.
- 1:11:19At Memphis. So what you were pairing is you
- 1:11:22repairing Young guys with very experienced, guys.
- 1:11:28New school philosophy with experienced, guys, that can kind
- 1:11:34of point out maybe blind spots in these newer, newer systems.
- 1:11:39Right? Exactly.
- 1:11:41Alright, let's jump into it. Let's get into.
- 1:11:43Memphis, you looked at the Houston, the Ole Miss game, the
- 1:11:46Ole Miss upset that Justin Fuente went from being a rising
- 1:11:50stars. The o.c. and its first couple
- 1:11:52years of Memphis, he knocks off the Hugh.
- 1:11:54Freeze He's team a top 15 team at that point in time.
- 1:11:57What did you see from that game and the Houston game?
- 1:12:01So similar to TCU, we actually saw Paxton Lynch under Center,
- 1:12:07not a great deal, but in in certain scenarios, so in if they
- 1:12:13decided they wanted to pound the ball between the tackles, okay?
- 1:12:17We go under Center and just hand the ball off downhill.
- 1:12:22If they were in the red zone and needed a couple yards, they
- 1:12:26would get under Center going. Downhill, run Paxton Lynch hand
- 1:12:30it off to there. Running back running downhill
- 1:12:34quarterback Powers. We're still employed in that
- 1:12:37offense. So I mean the QB power is not
- 1:12:39going away. Ladies and gentlemen, it is a
- 1:12:41consistent element of that run game.
- 1:12:43It is a staple of the Valente offense.
- 1:12:46Yep. So when they were running the
- 1:12:49read option, it was a lot more inside Zone and kind of power
- 1:12:53versus the outside Zone that we are accustomed to.
- 1:12:58Okay. They ran probably more Veer and
- 1:13:03inverted v r with or without jet motion.
- 1:13:06Even than TCU. I think TC you really went full
- 1:13:10inverted. V r.
- 1:13:11I think towards the end of that 2010 season, especially in the
- 1:13:15bowl game, I think it's one that really had the big coming-out
- 1:13:17party so we were starting to see more of it at at Memphis there
- 1:13:25and still a lot of bubble and tunnel screens and variations
- 1:13:29off of that. Probably more more more tunnels
- 1:13:34screens than we run probably less bubble screens than we run.
- 1:13:38Okay? But the thing that like I saw
- 1:13:44more of than I've been used to recently as we they ran a lot
- 1:13:48more Slants to the slot receiver and they actually targeted that
- 1:13:51in the offense consistently whereas I feel like we go away
- 1:13:54from that in those because that could be a bread-and-butter
- 1:13:57route for us when we need to move the sticks and I feel like
- 1:13:59we go away from it for so long. And eventually we get back to it
- 1:14:03and it has some success for us but we don't stick with that
- 1:14:06concept. What what what it?
- 1:14:10Is the broken ask this? Isn't that a manipulation play
- 1:14:14like running a 43-yard slant, consistently bread and butter
- 1:14:18and it eventually aren't you going to eventually the mic or
- 1:14:22the back or whichever side of the field?
- 1:14:23You're running to eventually. If they see that predicament,
- 1:14:28okay, they ran this three times. I'm getting out of my lane and
- 1:14:33I'm going to try to stop it and thus if that happens, if they
- 1:14:38take that step out of the lane you.
- 1:14:40Throw you run something like a draw.
- 1:14:42Well, he's off balance, he's out of position.
- 1:14:45We're about to have a nice little spread open here.
- 1:14:48We'll remember, I forget if I remember correctly.
- 1:14:51I think it was the, the big play to Trey against Middle Tennessee
- 1:14:54State. Where they jumped, what, what
- 1:14:59looked like was that kind of like a square in and then trade
- 1:15:04took in a field and got the big gay.
- 1:15:06The one that was underthrown slightly.
- 1:15:08Yes, yes, yes. Yeah, I mean that's a similar
- 1:15:13type of concept that you're talking about there where we had
- 1:15:16ran a couple plays where they were starting to key on what
- 1:15:19we're doing and we hit them with something that kind of got them
- 1:15:21out of position. Still busted coverage, safety
- 1:15:24didn't realize what the what the backer was doing and the backer,
- 1:15:31you know, just went in place there.
- 1:15:34Now, in terms of what they do in the passing game, they still
- 1:15:37they didn't run that they ran more slams than we did.
- 1:15:39But they also I did a little different things outside the
- 1:15:43numbers. Okay.
- 1:15:45So instead of just running the true Fades, they ran a lot of
- 1:15:49like Faith stops, and a lot of like kind of back shoulder laser
- 1:15:54throws. And so that that's a little bit
- 1:15:58of a different different concept than what we are seeing where
- 1:16:03we're, when we take the shots, they are more straight Fades,
- 1:16:07right? And I don't know if that's a
- 1:16:10Personnel decision or if that's a scheme decision but we're not
- 1:16:15seeing some of those kind of Fate stops.
- 1:16:18And back shoulder throws that were kind of Hallmarks of the
- 1:16:22Memphis offense. All right, and it in obviously,
- 1:16:28Dicky and corn coatsy's there. So again, we're seeing a lot of,
- 1:16:34we're seeing a lot of similar elements, but we're also seeing
- 1:16:37things that we don't see as much anymore.
- 1:16:39Brian, as you start analyzing this, you know, from what you
- 1:16:45saw from really 10 years ago and roughly 45 years ago.
- 1:16:49Excuse me, six years ago, I get that, right.
- 1:16:52What are you saying? These are what you need to start
- 1:16:55taking these elements and you need to put them here.
- 1:16:58Not only with the quarterback we have, but the offensive
- 1:17:01Personnel how we play defense and the wide receiver in the
- 1:17:06weapons. What do you want to see them
- 1:17:07bring to Virginia, Tech from what you see on the table, more
- 1:17:13kind of middle middle routes. So middle of the defense middle
- 1:17:17depth, you know, starting with those 15-yard dig starting with
- 1:17:23with more consistent. Slants from the slot position,
- 1:17:28more cross-country kind of crossers.
- 1:17:30I like to see see more of that. And we can work that off play
- 1:17:33action, where you get a little bit more time there so those can
- 1:17:36kind of develop, right. But a lot of this comes down to,
- 1:17:41you know, we've said it play sequencing and execution over
- 1:17:45all. Those are, those are still the
- 1:17:46areas that when I watch those tapes.
- 1:17:49Memphis and TCU looked more crisp running these plays than
- 1:17:53we look consistently. Can I ask this?
- 1:17:57You watch this offense for five years here, right?
- 1:18:00Yep. And you just watched four games.
- 1:18:03Probably close to. I'm gonna guess close to 250
- 1:18:06snaps. Correct.
- 1:18:08Give or take snaps. Yeah.
- 1:18:10Was there ever a time when you're sitting there watching it
- 1:18:14last couple days where you said they're going to do this was
- 1:18:19there any time in point you were able to key and say they're
- 1:18:22going to do this. I mean I could see a Jet Sweep
- 1:18:25coming a mile away but he was it was a little more you know we
- 1:18:30sometimes Telegraph what we're doing in our priest at motion
- 1:18:33but then we work variations off that to make to take that to
- 1:18:37take that away, take that anticipation away.
- 1:18:41So I think that's why it's a little bit little bit hard
- 1:18:45sometimes when we start games because we start games with,
- 1:18:49we're showing you what we're showing you what to expect.
- 1:18:53We'll see if you key on it and then we'll then we'll give you a
- 1:18:55variation of it. All right?
- 1:18:59All right. I don't necessarily like that
- 1:19:00approach because I'd like to see us sometimes come out and hit
- 1:19:03them with something they haven't seen okay and not you know save
- 1:19:08our load for when we get behind No, hit them.
- 1:19:14Yeah, I'd like to see the variations and then, you know,
- 1:19:22get them to start thinking then we can get back to our bread and
- 1:19:24butters with the Jet Sweep that you know, are more telegraphed.
- 1:19:29All right, on Brian. Do you feel like there's
- 1:19:32anything with those teams that they had that we're missing?
- 1:19:37We've had this this type of player before but we don't
- 1:19:42necessarily have an established version of it now and that's
- 1:19:45kind of that Swiss army knife h-back like Sam Rogers, our
- 1:19:49Dalton Keen Drake and Nick I think are doing the best they
- 1:19:54can but I don't think they're quite where they need to be to
- 1:19:57run that position. Consistently and, you know, we
- 1:20:01were using James Mitchell has kind of both a past catching
- 1:20:04tight in and a Swiss Army knife Because of how well he could
- 1:20:08Block in space and not having him.
- 1:20:11His definitely started to hurt this offense.
- 1:20:14You know, say what you will about us having decent depth at
- 1:20:18the position. Some of the things he was doing
- 1:20:21is hard to replace and they didn't always show up on the
- 1:20:22stat sheet. All right, all right.
- 1:20:26What about Braxton? What's the difference between
- 1:20:28him? And I mean, I'm not going to say
- 1:20:30what's the difference between an Andy Dalton, Andy Dalton was a
- 1:20:33starter for ten years, went to five, you know, took the
- 1:20:37Cincinnati Bengals to five playoff games as many people
- 1:20:40that trash Andy, Dalton he took the Bangles two playoff games.
- 1:20:45I think that's more than Boomer. I think that's more than Carson
- 1:20:48and then, obviously Paxton was one of those guys to me.
- 1:20:51Thanks and have a lot of talent packs and went to the worst
- 1:20:54place he could go. And follow you and iconic
- 1:20:59quarterback. He wasn't like you know, you
- 1:21:01were you were step if he to follow Tebow you might have just
- 1:21:04gave him a little bit more time to kind of.
- 1:21:07Yeah attentively come into his own but when you're when you're
- 1:21:11following a legend and when you're in a situation where if
- 1:21:15you don't win now their consequences and there was yeah
- 1:21:20and he's pretty much gone from the league now.
- 1:21:23But what's the difference? What's the difference between
- 1:21:26Burmeister and those two guys where, you know, maybe the maybe
- 1:21:30the plays are in the Playbook, And we're just not seeing them
- 1:21:33because a Braxton, like I said some of its sequencing but a lot
- 1:21:37of it is really just the command of the offense that they have
- 1:21:42they they were comfortable and some of that's from experience.
- 1:21:46But I mean at this point Braxton has been in this offense going
- 1:21:51on three years now, through you got, you got to be comfortable
- 1:21:55in this offense at this point if you're going to be the starter.
- 1:21:58But just overall command and Lynch and Dalton.
- 1:22:02Could make those you know we talk about the Fades versus kind
- 1:22:08of those those back shoulders and those Faith stops.
- 1:22:11You've got to be able to put some arm behind those type of
- 1:22:15throws because they're they're not Loft it up in the air where
- 1:22:19your guy goes up and gets it. They have to be in a spot on
- 1:22:23time or it could potentially be a pick.
- 1:22:28Some of the some of that you can't necessarily put in the
- 1:22:30offense, unless you've got a quarterback that has that type
- 1:22:33of arm and I think that's what's missing and then some of the
- 1:22:37just calculated risk and I think that comes with the confidence
- 1:22:40because if you're confident in the throes you're making, where
- 1:22:44your receivers are and your own arm, you know, you'll
- 1:22:49occasionally, take a little bit of a calculated risk and squeeze
- 1:22:52one in there. I saw packs and against Houston,
- 1:22:55throw it between two Defenders on a On a corner route that you
- 1:23:00know, it was tight coverage but there was a window and he got it
- 1:23:03in there and sometimes you got to make those throws. all right,
- 1:23:08so what I'm kind of hearing even though he's been in the system
- 1:23:12for years, he's only played technically Seven games now.
- 1:23:19Yeah, he games a game. Excuse me, he was he was three
- 1:23:22in one last year so you know, where Dalton and Paxton.
- 1:23:28Basically, by the time they got to some of those years we're
- 1:23:30looking at they've been in the system two and three years and
- 1:23:33not just in the system, but they were at 20 plus games.
- 1:23:37And I'm going to say this goes back to fool and corn in
- 1:23:41general, Every year it's a new quarterback, every years
- 1:23:45multiple, quarterbacks you need to find a guy and you got you.
- 1:23:50They've recruited several very talented guys but it's always as
- 1:23:54well. Can't do it quite yet.
- 1:23:57Who was it? We talked to Brian.
- 1:24:00That said the year Ryan Willis, when Ryan Willis, when Josh
- 1:24:05Jackson went down, they should have said screw Ryan.
- 1:24:07Well, let's play handed screw it.
- 1:24:10It's not going to be a good season anyway.
- 1:24:12Get him to all the game reps you can because hendon's a type of
- 1:24:15guy that do it. So, and whoever it was and I
- 1:24:19don't remember who it was. I'm sorry, I'm old.
- 1:24:22Um, so is that a key? If that's a key, the offense.
- 1:24:26Great. Then from day one after Jerrod
- 1:24:29of In Josh Jackson your quarterback second you I don't
- 1:24:33care what Ron or you do it the opposite way, I don't care what
- 1:24:36Ron Williams does. Josh is your quarterback.
- 1:24:38Yeah, go back and look at the numbers from 2013 and 2014 and
- 1:24:462015 with Paxton Lynch you'll see ratcheting it up very
- 1:24:51steady, uptick in terms of yardage in terms of efficiency
- 1:24:56and turns of touchdown to interception ratio.
- 1:24:59I mean, Everything improved with time but you can't create
- 1:25:05scenarios where you don't have consistencies at that position
- 1:25:09and you know some of this is you know, just bad luck and some of
- 1:25:14this is creating scenarios were quarterbacks don't want to
- 1:25:17continue playing here. For one reason or another and
- 1:25:22that's so good. Maybe you got to take some
- 1:25:25ownership of that. I mean, yes.
- 1:25:26You know, you've had some bad luck, thrown your way you go.
- 1:25:29There were choices made that didn't work in your favor, but
- 1:25:33at the same time, you got to play with the guys.
- 1:25:35You got in. Try to maintain the talent that
- 1:25:37you do have and develop that Talent, true.
- 1:25:41Very true can only develop that Talent if you keep guys in the
- 1:25:44building and get them reps in the game.
- 1:25:47Abso-freakin'-lutely. All right man kudos to Brian for
- 1:25:54diving into this because you know I thought about it and
- 1:25:57found tape and sometimes when you give a football junkie tape
- 1:26:01it's like it's like giving an attic something like that.
- 1:26:10We are going to do it again. You boys 500 or better?
- 1:26:16We're rolling. We're going to look at the ACC
- 1:26:19seven games and then we're going to look at three out of
- 1:26:21converges, braless start tomorrow night, I will probably
- 1:26:25be tuned into this as will you as UVA goes down to Miami to
- 1:26:29play Miami. Miami is a five and a half Point
- 1:26:33favorite since you are leading, you get the honor sir Miami
- 1:26:39legal limit UVA. But awful on defense.
- 1:26:45Holy crap. Did you watch some of that game
- 1:26:47against wait? Oh some of the tape where I'd
- 1:26:51like the defensive lineman like did a push got show.
- 1:26:53It 100 this wasn't late in the game.
- 1:26:56They know one was fatigued defensive lineman playing
- 1:27:01playing titty pet with the offensive linemen and then you
- 1:27:05got the secondary just like all right well the ball is in the
- 1:27:07air. I'm going to watch it for a bit
- 1:27:09here. It's going to float into the end
- 1:27:11zone. Shit.
- 1:27:13It's in the end zone. So basically for kind of the
- 1:27:15game surrender Cobra. Yeah, right after where yeah,
- 1:27:20I'm with you Miami legal limit. Miami wins by 1440 228.
- 1:27:27All right. Good do u qn c.
- 1:27:31Ha ha. Um, again is a nineteen and a
- 1:27:38half Point favorite We talked about it.
- 1:27:41A few weeks ago, UNC is going to struggle with anyone who has a
- 1:27:45good defense Duke, does not have a good defense.
- 1:27:49If they get me again, they get me again.
- 1:27:53Um, see wins by 21. They cover the 19, to half 4927.
- 1:28:03I'm gonna go UNC as well, because Number one, it's Duke
- 1:28:11number to UNC if they don't do something.
- 1:28:14Then I mean, I know we're picking against the spread here
- 1:28:17and not outright winner, but in UNC need some style points at
- 1:28:21this point, right? What else?
- 1:28:23This is a good opportunity to get some style points against an
- 1:28:25in-state rival. Go and beat the fucking Blue
- 1:28:29Devils. If you don't beat them by 19
- 1:28:31points, I'm not sure whether you got a pulse at this point.
- 1:28:35Well, if they don't meet about 19 plus Point same house coming
- 1:28:37back next year. Which is going to screw up their
- 1:28:40quarterback of the future type thing because the way they've
- 1:28:43recruited. I, Brian, you get to lead with
- 1:28:46this one. Hey, Georgia Tech pit hit is a
- 1:28:50three and a half Point favorite. Well, I got a pic.
- 1:28:52I got to pick Georgia Tech against Kenny Pickett.
- 1:28:56This is like, my nightmare scenario.
- 1:28:58Worst, why are you making me do? This is I had to pick Duke.
- 1:29:06Yeah. I can't believe I'm doing this.
- 1:29:12Give me Kenny Pickett. The Kenny Pickett pits,
- 1:29:18anything. It pits.
- 1:29:19I'm seriously trying to figure out how this game is three and a
- 1:29:22half. I feel like the Vegas in Vegas,
- 1:29:27builds the casinos, and they're building more and now they're
- 1:29:30getting online sports book and having that house somewhere.
- 1:29:33So they're building more casinos.
- 1:29:36I can't see how this is a three and a half point game for Pitt
- 1:29:41this, even though they lost to Western Michigan.
- 1:29:44Their offense, most of the year has been productive in every
- 1:29:49game they played Georgia Tech's defense played okay against UNC,
- 1:29:56they still gave up almost 30 points.
- 1:30:00Georgia Tech's offense has been the roller coaster ride.
- 1:30:03That you don't miss the big bad wolf.
- 1:30:06She had hurt you because you don't know what they're going to
- 1:30:08do. I don't know how they're getting
- 1:30:10three and a half Point here. This line smells very fishy.
- 1:30:13I'm with you give me pit All right.
- 1:30:18Brian. You get to leave the next one
- 1:30:20man. I get to lead the next one.
- 1:30:22I'm a little bit confused by this.
- 1:30:23So Wake Forest coming off a pretty big win over.
- 1:30:28UVA plays Louisville. Louisville, who, you know?
- 1:30:36You know, one last week against Florida state only one by eight
- 1:30:40points. And I mean that game, you know,
- 1:30:43they scored 31 first half points and then didn't score anything
- 1:30:47after that, you know, Louisville's three.
- 1:30:50And one there wins obviously Ole Miss gave up 43 points Eastern
- 1:30:56Kentucky. You know, when I can count that
- 1:30:59one, you see ya. And against a putrid, FSU team
- 1:31:04gave up 23. Let's see, wakes often, I don't
- 1:31:08see how this is a seven-point game.
- 1:31:10I think weight wins by 10. I think way twin somewhere in
- 1:31:13the neighborhood of like 3828 just because you look evil
- 1:31:18hasn't stopped anyone they played this year.
- 1:31:22Yeah we give me wake. I'm taking weight because I'm
- 1:31:26taking I'm almost taking week to to be the team coming out of the
- 1:31:31Atlantic if they can, if they can get Everything they keep it
- 1:31:38steady. Because right now, I think they
- 1:31:39have a good balance of Defense passing game rushing attack.
- 1:31:45They're always well coach, they're always sought on special
- 1:31:48teams. I just think they're they're
- 1:31:52that classic. You know, just well structured
- 1:31:57team that if they get one or two things, go their way in every
- 1:32:03game, they can pull it out against anybody.
- 1:32:05So I'll take wake here in the and lay the seven.
- 1:32:11I like Louisville has kind of shown a pulse the last couple
- 1:32:15weeks but I feel like wakes just more more well-rounded team and
- 1:32:20is going to handle them. Wake is a crisp, executing
- 1:32:23machine on offense right now and just to verify Steady.
- 1:32:26As You Go defense? Yep, all right.
- 1:32:30Let's figure this one out Brian as you lead, Syracuse plays FSU
- 1:32:34FSU has not won a game. As I mentioned Louisville scored
- 1:32:3931 on them in the first half last week.
- 1:32:42So the game was over, they fought and got the 23 fsu's, a
- 1:32:48four and a half Point favorite. And I mean, I know Braun that
- 1:32:52this game this week. you know, is at is at Florida State, but
- 1:33:01if you saw the look of the crowd there last week, it's not the
- 1:33:04Florida state of old. It's like 60% capacity.
- 1:33:08They reach full apathy. Oh they are apathetic.
- 1:33:12Yeah, let's talk real quick about, you know, if we had to
- 1:33:15roll the dice on the Memphis coach, we at least got the
- 1:33:18better of the two. Oh, are you sure it was, he just
- 1:33:23in a no-win situation down there.
- 1:33:26You know what? I don't care about.
- 1:33:28No win situation. Man, you're over.
- 1:33:30We were if we were pulling the, the stat classes that they did
- 1:33:34here, and we're winning like that went.
- 1:33:37A would have been gone two years ago, true.
- 1:33:40Very true. Very true.
- 1:33:42So Braun. Are you taking them?
- 1:33:48Hell no. Give me cues.
- 1:33:52I'm right with you. I don't care if Syracuse is
- 1:33:55coming off, a very big win in the dome last week.
- 1:33:58Syracuse to me is just to well-rounded.
- 1:34:02This is another one of those smelly, smelly lines because I
- 1:34:05think people are going to, they're doing that to say, well,
- 1:34:09people are going to see Florida State and just lay it because of
- 1:34:12Syracuse this line was week. One or two.
- 1:34:14I think you could have seen people jump all over FSU here,
- 1:34:20especially the way they competed wire-to-wire with Notre.
- 1:34:23Dame very true, but that's really just having seen the last
- 1:34:27three weeks, you know, juries out here.
- 1:34:31He's out, completely thickness, wins closer than enough enough
- 1:34:38to for getting four and a half. As a Road Dogg enough to cover.
- 1:34:43I mean, I think he's wins out, right?
- 1:34:44So yeah, me too, man. All right, here we go.
- 1:34:48Braun NC State off the huge. He's upset of Clemson.
- 1:34:52Last week in Raleigh gets Louisiana Tech this week, NC
- 1:34:55State's Elaine, 20 and a half on.
- 1:34:57Make this one short and sweet. It's a hangover game for them,
- 1:35:00they're going to win. They're not going to win by more
- 1:35:02than three touchdowns against Claudette.
- 1:35:07You know what? I'm gonna go against you here.
- 1:35:09Finally have a pivot point here. I see NC State.
- 1:35:15I think you know you say hangover I say Clemson is the
- 1:35:20game that kind of refocuses them and say we still got something
- 1:35:23to play for here. It's true.
- 1:35:25So they so they come in focused and ready to ready to go.
- 1:35:28I think they take care of business.
- 1:35:31All right, Brian. We finally decide to decipher
- 1:35:33their. All right, man.
- 1:35:35Well, let's go talk about Clemson this week.
- 1:35:38They get BC coming into town, 15 and a half Point.
- 1:35:45Favorites are the Clemson Tigers in Death Valley.
- 1:35:48It is going to be a night game that is going to be on the ACC
- 1:35:51Network. Over under forty six and a half.
- 1:35:56Brian, what are you thinking on this one?
- 1:36:00Give me the under. Okay, we BC in this line would
- 1:36:07have been again some of these lines the I guess a lot of this
- 1:36:13is like playing on History because I mean, right now,
- 1:36:17nothing is told me that Clemson can beat any power 5, team by
- 1:36:2115, a half points. So I'm going to think that a
- 1:36:27pretty good BC team even without their starting quarterback.
- 1:36:30They've shown, they can pivot their offensive style leaving
- 1:36:33their power running game. They've got a solid defense,
- 1:36:36it's better. It's improved from last year.
- 1:36:38It's not giving up some of the big caching runs two
- 1:36:40quarterbacks like it was last year.
- 1:36:44So I'll take BC, I can probably tell you why, I think you're
- 1:36:47going to go the other way, though.
- 1:36:49Well, I'm going the other way. Why am I going the other way?
- 1:36:52You're going the other way? Because it's a fucking put up or
- 1:36:54shut up week for Clemson after that loss to NC State.
- 1:36:58Anytime Dabo gets into those put up or shut up games.
- 1:37:01His team's come out and respond. I also think it's Dennis grow
- 1:37:05cells. Essentially, this is going to be
- 1:37:07his third game on tape, and I think Brent venables is going to
- 1:37:11have him pretty much eaten alive.
- 1:37:13I take the under two and I think Clemson wins something like 20.
- 1:37:19It's That will be much. It's barely going to cover some
- 1:37:21like 24/7 maybe 31, maybe 3124 shooting 3110 but I don't think
- 1:37:29this is all going to be seized getting to 14 points.
- 1:37:32So, I'm going to take Clemson on this one.
- 1:37:35Alright, alright, that wraps the ACC.
- 1:37:37Let's go out of conference. Brian three.
- 1:37:40Pretty big games in several different conferences.
- 1:37:44Let's start in the SEC. Alabama, Ole Miss old.
- 1:37:50Lane kiffin, Nick Saban. As every Alabama game is from
- 1:37:56the month of after SEC play starts.
- 1:37:59Its on CBS at 3:30. Not shop.
- 1:38:04Bama ready for this one? Yep.
- 1:38:07Bama laying 14 and a half over under seventy nine and a half.
- 1:38:13Yeah, I'm trying to wonder what they know here is.
- 1:38:18You know, I think bam has a really good team, but I think
- 1:38:21Ole Miss keeps it closed through the duration.
- 1:38:23I think it's like a 10 10 point 10 point win for for Bama there.
- 1:38:28So give me Ole Miss. I know Mike will bond.
- 1:38:32It doesn't like me doing that. You think that lane kiffin is a
- 1:38:36clown? But I will say that he might be
- 1:38:40a clown, but when he is focused on a goal, he does a pretty good
- 1:38:44job of keeping his team's competitive even against.
- 1:38:48ADI competition, so I'll go with Ole Miss here.
- 1:38:54I'm gonna go with Ole Miss to. So we're back to agree and
- 1:38:57again, and I think it's super close and I think it's super
- 1:39:01close enough. That if you wanted to throw a
- 1:39:03few bucks on the money line, because I think the money line
- 1:39:05is going to be so favorable for Ole Miss.
- 1:39:07I think they can get them. I think Ole Miss, I think Lane
- 1:39:12can out tour Bryce young without without the receivers.
- 1:39:17The over is 17. And this game went to like, 112
- 1:39:22last year. 111. Excuse me, 63 48 was the final
- 1:39:28Alabama and then the previous year same way.
- 1:39:32It went pretty high with Lane. I mean kiffin knows how to
- 1:39:38expose the biggest defense has now.
- 1:39:41The question is going to be his is kiffin.
- 1:39:43If he keeps continuing to do well here, does the place that
- 1:39:48left them on tarmac? Give them another call.
- 1:39:52Or does he say, you know what? Forget that I don't feel like
- 1:39:55being left out in the cold again but Ole Miss definitely covers.
- 1:40:00Think about the money line. If you're getting good odds I
- 1:40:03think almost could pull the pig upset here in Tuscaloosa.
- 1:40:07All right. Brian next one, let's go out to
- 1:40:11the Big 12 and throw a little off here because we hadn't
- 1:40:16really done much, Big 12, exception of West, Junior or
- 1:40:18Oklahoma, but Baylor and Oklahoma State Eight both 4 & 0,
- 1:40:23both ranked in the top 25, Baylor with the big upset win
- 1:40:27last week at Iowa State. Oklahoma State, big upset win
- 1:40:32over Kansas State. So both are coming in off two
- 1:40:36big wins. Oklahoma state with the Boise
- 1:40:41State wind going up there at a night game winning.
- 1:40:44And you know, other than the our state, this is kind of the
- 1:40:49second big test for Baylor. This is going to be in
- 1:40:53Stillwater with a night kick. And as much as I love Dave,
- 1:40:57Aranda, he's a hell of a defensive coordinator.
- 1:41:00I think Gundy gets this one. And I'll lay the three and a
- 1:41:05half points. Give me Okie State.
- 1:41:09You know what? I'm right there with you.
- 1:41:13I think Baylor's going to have a little bit of a hangover from a
- 1:41:17big win, you're playing in a tough environment and I think
- 1:41:22going to get is going to get those guys ready to go.
- 1:41:24So I'll take Okie State there. We're agreeing on that one.
- 1:41:29All right. To me, this is the biggest game
- 1:41:32of the weekend. I'm not sure if ESPN Gameday,
- 1:41:35actually. Where is game day going to be
- 1:41:36this week? Mom, you look that up real
- 1:41:38quick. Great question because there's
- 1:41:41three big games. We're not we're not picking the
- 1:41:43Arkansas Georgia game. I didn't want to do Jewel SEC
- 1:41:49because that's a big game. Sam Pittman returning to Georgia
- 1:41:52where he coach the offensive line for several years and
- 1:41:55several playoff runs. He's at 14 and 14 ft, what
- 1:41:58Wabash? Cincinnati at Notre Dame.
- 1:42:03The line just went down a few minutes ago.
- 1:42:07Cincinnati is the road favorite. Lane two points against the
- 1:42:13Irish. Cincinnati is 3 and 0 Notre
- 1:42:18Dame's for no Cincinnati with wind So Far Over Indiana might
- 1:42:24Miami of Ohio and Murray State so not the biggest while while
- 1:42:31Notre Dame. We watch the fourth quarter that
- 1:42:34game just laid the absolute SmackDown on Wisconsin in every
- 1:42:38single way. We Got Game Day in Athens,
- 1:42:43Georgia. I like that.
- 1:42:47I mean, I'm not knocking, like, where they go but for real.
- 1:42:53You're good. If this was that Arkansas, do
- 1:42:57it, they don't go to Fayetteville, much to me, go to
- 1:43:01South Bend, you give Cincinnati that Spotlight that day.
- 1:43:04You give Georgia Spotlight all the time.
- 1:43:06All right, Brian. Two-point game.
- 1:43:11Do you think it's basically considered I'm taking Notre
- 1:43:13Dame? Mainly because I want Notre Dame
- 1:43:16to get another Goodwin before we get them.
- 1:43:20I want that game to be as big and meaningful as possible
- 1:43:23because if we can figure out a way to get it done, then,
- 1:43:28that'll that's all the better for us.
- 1:43:30Absolutely. And I'm with you.
- 1:43:33And I'm not with you because of I want them to come in
- 1:43:36undefeated. I want them to come in rank.
- 1:43:40Bleah. It could potentially be in the
- 1:43:42top five with that win, especially with numerous teams
- 1:43:47above them playing good opponents but I think this is
- 1:43:51the Marcus Freeman game. I think Marcus Freeman who had
- 1:43:54been with Luke pickle for quite a few years.
- 1:43:57Probably knows enough ins and outs when you can say the same
- 1:44:01thing with fickle knows his defense in and out to the
- 1:44:04difference is pickle knows his defense in and out pickle now
- 1:44:08has to deal with his defense. The ins and out with stack, top
- 1:44:13ten classes in top Elite Defenders.
- 1:44:17And as good as fickle as a coach, I think Notre Dame wins
- 1:44:20this one. So a home, dog getting points.
- 1:44:23Let's lay that on the line. We're both going Notre, Dame.
- 1:44:27We only disagreed on two games behind.
- 1:44:31So if you like our statistics of when we bet together, which I
- 1:44:36think we're running it like a 70% clip when we agree on
- 1:44:38things. Take your money, those games.
- 1:44:42We agreed on. Go Leon.
- 1:44:43Yeah, we got we got a good card this week, guys, got a very good
- 1:44:46card. This week.
- 1:44:47Anything breaking in the last hours here.
- 1:44:52I haven't seen anything buddy. It's like we're free and clear.
