- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1944. The Octave Day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 22 in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:22Today, for the pre-nineteen fifty five propers, we present commentary from Dom Gaspar Lefevre in the Saint Andrew Daily Missal in the episode for the 1962 Missal, since the feast is that of the Immaculate Heart of Mary promulgated by Pope Pius XII in 1944, the commentary is an abridgment of Dom Prosper Guerrenger's see the link in the description below. Of today's feast, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes the following. According to a tradition sanctioned by authority, it was at Jerusalem near the room of the last supper at the spot where now stands a fine church committed to the care of the Benedictines that Mary breathed her last.
- 1:25And it is at the foot of the Mount Of Olives in a place where about the year 1130 a monastery of the Benedictine monks of Cluny was built that her mortal remains were laid and she was carried up to heaven. The pilgrimages made to this tomb originated the Feast of the Assumption which was already solemnized in the East at the end of the sixth century. At the beginning of the seventh, the feast was also solemnized at Rome and it spread with the Roman liturgy over the whole West. Pope Leo the fourth instituted the Octave in 08/1947. In France, it is the only feast of Mary which was maintained by the Concordat of 1802 as a feast of obligation.
- 2:25We have accompanied thee with all our prayers when thou didst ascend towards thy son, says Saint Bernard, and we have at least followed thee at a distance, Oh, virgin. May thy goodness make known to the world the grace bestowed on thee by God. Obtain by thy holy prayers the forgiveness of the guilty, health for the sick, strength for weak souls, consolation for the afflicted, help and deliverance for those in peril. Oh Mary, queen of clemency, on this joyful solemnity, may thy humble servants who praise and invoke thy sweet name be overwhelmed with graces by Jesus Christ, thy son, our lord, who is the sovereign God, blessed throughout the ages. Amen.
- 3:30Let us honor Mary with special confidence during these feasts which celebrate her triumph. Commemorated today are saints Timothy, Hippolytus, and Symphorian, martyrs. Timothy of Antioch was martyred under the emperor Alexander at Rome in the fourth century. He was cruelly beaten and quicklime was sprinkled over his torn flesh. At last he was beheaded.
- 4:05On the same day at Ostia, Hippolytus, Bishop of Porto, was thrown into a hole filled with water and received the crown of martyrdom about the year of our Lord 02/2025. Again on the same day about the year of our Lord 180 under the reign of Aurelian, Symphorian who was still a young man was beheaded at Autun. While he went to execution his mother said to him, My son, my son, remember eternal life. Look up to heaven and see the one who reigns there. Life is not taken from thee.
- 4:59It is exchanged for a better one. Also commemorated today is the vigil of Saint Bartholomew, normally celebrated on the twenty third, but transferred to Saturday due to it falling on Sunday. Of this vigil, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes, the feasts of the apostles are spread throughout the liturgical cycle as if to show that the apostles are the foundation on which the whole church rests. Saint Bartholomew is the sixth in the list of 12 as given by the evangelists. Like the other apostles, he learned the secrets of the divine law and made them known to the world confirming them by his martyrdom.
- 5:54On this day, the liturgy prepares us for his feast. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. The introit. Let us all rejoice in the Lord celebrating a festival day in honor of the blessed Virgin Mary for whose assumption the angels rejoice and give praise to the Son of God.
- 6:31My heart hath uttered a good word. I speak my works to the king. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Let us all rejoice in the Lord celebrating the festival day in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary for whose assumption the angels rejoice and give praise to the Son of God.
- 7:10The Collect, let us pray. Forgive, we beseech thee, O Lord, the sins of thy servants, And may we, who are unable to please thee by our deeds, be saved by the intercession of the mother of thy son, our Lord, who with thee liveth and reigneth in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. A commemoration of many martyrs. O Lord, we beseech thee, mercifully lend us thy help and through the intercession of thy blessed martyrs, Timothy, Hippolytus, and Symphorian, stretch over us the right hand of thy indulgence.
- 8:08A commemoration of the vigil of Saint Bartholomew. Grant we beseech thee, O Almighty God, that the worshipful feast of thy blessed apostle Bartholomew on the eve whereof we now stand may avail us to the increase both of godliness towards thee and of health to our own souls through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the wisdom of Sirach. In all things I sought rest, and I shall abide in the inheritance of the Lord.
- 9:03Then the creator of all things commanded, and he that made me rested in my tabernacle. And his command to me was that I should find my home in Jacob. Throw in my lot with Israel. Take root among his chosen race. And now I made Zion my stronghold, the holy city my resting place, Jerusalem my throne, my roots spread out among the people that enjoys his favor.
- 9:38My God has granted me a share in his own domain. Where his faithful servants are gathered, there I love to linger. I grew to my full stature as cedars grow in Lebanon, as cypress on Zion's Hill, as palm tree in the cades, or rose bush in Jericho, Fair as olive tree in the plain or as plain tree by the waterside like cinnamon or scented balm I yield my perfume. My fragrance is like the choicest myrrh. The gradual.
- 10:26Because of truth and meekness and justice in thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully. Hearken, O daughter, and see, and incline thy ear for the king hath greatly desired thy beauty. Alleluia. Alleluia. Mary has been taken up into heaven.
- 10:50The angelic host rejoices. Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Luke. In one of the villages Jesus entered during his journey at that time, a woman called Martha entertained him in her house. She had a sister called Mary and Mary took her place at the Lord's feet and listened to his words.
- 11:24Martha was distracted by waiting on many needs, so she came to his side and asked, Lord, art thou content that my sister should leave me to do the serving alone? Come, bid her help me. Jesus answered her, Martha, Martha, how many cares and troubles thou hast? But only one thing is necessary, and Mary has chosen for herself the best part of all that which shall never be taken away from her. The Offeratory.
- 12:10Mary hath been taken up into heaven. The angels rejoice and blessing God praise him with one voice. Alleluia. The secret. May the prayer of the mother of God come to the aid of thy people, o Lord.
- 12:33And although we know that she has passed from this life to fulfill the conditions of our mortality, nevertheless may we experience her intercession for us in the glory of heaven through the same Jesus Christ, thy son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A commemoration of Saints Timothy, Hippolytus, and Symphorian. May this sacrifice of thy dedicated people be accepted by thee, O Lord, in honor of thy saints, to whose merits we attribute the help afforded us in tribulation, a commemoration of the vigil of Saint Bartholomew, offering to thee these holy mysteries with reverence for the high dignity of the apostleship, we beseech thee, O Lord, that through the prayers of blessed Bartholomew, thy apostle, to whose feast we look forward, thy people ever may set forth their desires before thee and gain what they seek through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 14:12The preface of Our Lady. It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, and that we should praise and bless and proclaim thee in the assumption of blessed Mary ever Virgin, who also conceived thine only begotten Son by the overshadowing of the Holy Ghost and the glory of her virginity still abiding, gave forth to the world the everlasting light, Jesus Christ, our Lord, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, The dominions worship it and the power stand in all. The heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with them we entreat thee that thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with humble praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory.
- 15:34Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. Mary hath chosen for herself the best part, which shall not be taken from her for ever.
- 16:04The post communion. Let us pray. Having been made partakers of thy heavenly banquet, we implore thy mercy, O Lord our God, that we who celebrate the assumption of the mother of God may by her intercession be delivered from all the evils that threaten us through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A commemoration of many martyrs.
- 16:48We who are filled with the bounty of this divine gift beseech thee, O Lord our God, that through the intercession of thy holy martyrs Timothy, Hippolytus, and Symphorian, we may partake thereof forevermore. A commemoration of the vigil of St. Bartholomew. Be appeased, we beseech thee, O Lord, by the prayers of thy holy Apostle Bartholomew, and grant us pardon and unfailing remedies through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 17:42The last gospel. A continuation of the holy gospel according to John. At that time, Jesus said to his disciples, this is my commandment that you should love one another as I have loved you. This is the greatest love a man can show that he should lay down his life for his friends. And you, if you do all that I command you, are my friends.
- 18:18I do not speak of you anymore as my servants. A servant is one who does not understand what his master is about. Whereas I have made known to you all that my father has told me. And so I have called you my friends. It was not you that chose me, It was I that chose you.
- 18:42The task I have appointed you is to go out and bear fruit, fruit which will endure so that every request you make of the father in my name may be granted you. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen. And Mary said, my soul magnifies the Lord. My spirit has found joy in God who is my savior because he has looked graciously upon the lowliness of his handmaid.
- 19:25Behold, from this day forward, all generations will count me blessed because he who is mighty, he whose name is holy, has wrought for me his wonders. He has mercy upon those who fear him from generation unto generation. He has done valiantly with the strength of his arm driving the proud astray in the conceit of their hearts. He has put down the mighty from their seat and exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty handed.
- 20:06He has protected his servant Israel keeping his merciful design in remembrance according to the promise which he made to our forefathers, Abraham, and his posterity forevermore. Amen. Mary exalted in spirit and said, I bless thee who art Lord over every blessing. I bless the dwelling of thy glory. I bless thee for whom was made a dwelling in my womb.
- 20:41I bless all the works of thy hands, which obey thee in all subjugation. I bless thy love wherewith thou hast loved us. I bless all the words that have come forth from thy mouth and are given to us. For I believe in truth that as thou hast said, so shall it be done. Alleluia.
- 21:15Saint Timothy, pray for us. Saint Hippolytus, pray for us. Saint Symphorian, pray for us. Saint Bartholomew, pray for us. Our Lady Assumed into Heaven, pray for us.
