Weekly Dose of Fat – 10-10-14 – with Chewey & D/C Dirty – Show #25 · Full Spectrum Cycling

0:00
Ladies and gentlemen, live [microphone static] from the Fatbike.com studios, it's the Weekly Dose of Fat for Friday, October 10th, 2014. It's show number 25, people.
0:13
[upbeat music] From deep inside the Fat Bike Radio research facilities, buried deep within Mickey Mouse. That's the Weekly Dose of Fat with your hosts, Vlad and Gomez. Yeah. Aloha. [laughs] It is.
0:31
It is us, people. It's the same people who do this every freaking week. Yeah, it's me again. Yeah. It's us again. [laughs] And joining us in the studio today,
0:40
fresh from his worldwide tour, the great American playboy, JK Livin. Yep. Did you punch yourself in the eye, by the way? Well- Just, just checking... little fight, little, little Fight Club reenactment. [laughs] Yep.
0:54
He's got a sweet shiner. He's got a shiner, ladies and gentlemen. That's a good thing, though. It's our pleasure to introduce CD and the Dose of Fat band with a new jam for the show intro.
1:05
Our show this week is sponsored by Surly Bikes. Ice cream trucks are starting to come into stock at better bicycle retailers across America. Why not visit your local bike shop and take one for a test ride?
1:17
Hey, Surly, I'm wearing your pants. Las bicicletas de Surly son hacer para un conducción suave. Mm. What exactly does that mean? [laughs] It means Surly bikes are made from steel for a smooth ride.
1:33
They're made from steel? [laughs] Steel. They have to thump their little heads. [laughs] Like kissing from Rose. [laughs] Bikes don't grow on trees, you know.
1:42
If you wanna know more about bikes made from steels, please check out surlybikes.com. [laughs] Tell us what's on the show this week, JK.
1:51
Well, on this week's show, Chewy provides us with the Luddite response to this year's Interbike coverage, we chat with Dirty from Drunk Cyclist, and we give you a preview of what's to come.
2:03
Psst, Surly is coming on the show next week. And that brings us- Are they gonna be wearing their own pants? To... Oh, you know, maybe we should check their pants. [laughs] Don't you just hate pants though?
2:15
[laughs] I just like saying pants today. What is that? Uh, maybe we should get, we should get Tyler so drunk that I can steal his pants. What? [laughs] And I'll wear [laughs]... and I'll actually be wearing
2:26
Surly from Tyler's pants. Tyler from Surly's pants. Surly from Tyler. [laughs] What, what's that sound I hear? [slurping] Brings us to our favorite portion of the show, the ready two, four.
2:41
[imitates bottle opening] [laughs] Hey, thanks, thanks, Paul Price, for the 25th anniversary bottle opener. French. Paul- Ha-ha... components engineering. Ha-ha. Ha-ha-ha.
2:56
So none of us stopped at the, at the beer shop, so we have three different beers that we fished out of the, uh, the Fatbike.com Radio studio cooler. Uh, actually, it's a refrigerator. Yeah, it's a refridge. Yeah.
3:09
It's like a dorm-style fridge. I got a Wisconsin Brewing Big Sweet Life Maibock. I have a Lakefront Brewery Oktoberfest. I have the Central Waters Mud Pumpy, Pumpy? [laughs] Pumpy. [laughs] Mud Puppy Porter.
3:24
That's like- Hey, this is all Wisconsin beer. Yeah, it is. Yeah. Cheers, boys. Cheers. Go Wisconsin. Cheers with beers and- So with three different beers, we're not really gonna talk about the beer.
3:33
We're just gonna drink it. Yep. But we have a talking point. How do you feel about Pabst hams and, uh, what's the other one, Blatz,
3:43
being owned by a Russian company that's headquartered in Cyprus that has a CEO from Los Angeles? Long as it's two bucks a can at the, uh, you know, Steel Is Real ride or whatever, whenever we get the cheap beer.
3:56
Even different regions. I was getting $2 tall boys on the East Coast. Oh, yeah. There you go. Which works out. As long as we don't have to drink Budweiser, who the hell cares?
4:06
So it's like the International House of Beer Kicks. You know, [clears throat] Miller's owned down there in... Are they still in South Africa, or did we get them back now? I think they got them back. Oh.
4:16
So it's always, like, an import. Yeah, well, you know- Take a roast... the thing is, I, this happens in real estate too.
4:21
Foreign companies come in, and they buy up a lot of America, buy a lot of American companies, a lot of American real estate. They lose their asses.
4:27
They go home crying with their tails between their legs 'cause America's great as hell, and then we just make money again when we sell it for the third time, or fourth time, or whatever. All right.
4:36
How many, how many times has Pebble Beach been sold to the Japanese exactly? [burps] That's an American burp right there. Are we still talking about, are we still talking about beer? [laughs] Pebble Beach.
4:46
[laughs] Let me remove that, let me remove that soapbox from, from beneath your Surly pants. Well- Well, I don't know about you, but I'm still never drinking Budweiser. Right.
4:56
And when I go to the gas station, I look at those beers, and I don't buy Pabst Blue Ribbon now 'cause it's owned by the damn Russians, and I buy Negra Modelo, or I buy Modelo Especial.
5:07
[laughs] At least it's on this continent. That's right. My Mexican friends, we are going to come to your house and drink the Negra Especial. We drink the Negra Modelo.
5:15
So is the gas station actually owned by Americans, or do you go to one of them foreign gas stations as well? [laughs] It's, it's a BP station, but- Hey, BP, that, that's not American. I know it's not American.
5:24
They, they messed up our Gulf, and then they put the profits in their pocket and take it- Right... back to jolly old England over there.
5:29
[laughs] Well, right across the street there's a Citgo, and that's owned by, like, somebody that hates America. Right. You know? I don't know. The dude down there in- Someone hates America... Venezuela, man.
5:39
Goddamn Royal Dutch Shell and, oh, man, whatever. Gotta drive our cars once in a while apparently. It's a big world.
5:46
Speaking of big worlds, we'll be right back with the voice of reason, the one and only Chewy, after this word from RSD Bikes, which is also not in America, but we love them.
5:57
[upbeat music]Up in the Great White North, they make bikes for every trail and every season. RST guarantees you'll have a smoking good time carving lines with their fatty Mayor.
6:11
Next season, the big guy gets new builds with an optional Bluto fork up front, one by 11 setups, and new colors, too. The most playful fatty on the market still clocks in under 30 pounds for less than two grand.
6:23
Or talk to your RST bike dealer about any of the trick new options, and always keep the rubber side down. [upbeat rock music] This is Ned Overend, and I listen to the weekly dose of fat on Fat Bike Radio.
6:37
Welcome back to the show, ladies and gentlemen. We have none other than, uh, Ron "Chewy" Moffett on the horn here. Let's get right into that. All right. Hey, so we've got Chewy on the line. Welcome to the...
6:48
Welcome back- Welcome back to the show... to the show. One of our few return guests. Chewy. The rest of them said, "No freaking way. We're not going back on that show again."
6:56
This guy's so good, we're having him back all the time. Well, for my case, it was either this or take a shit, so I decided I'd call you guys instead. [laughs] [laughs] I got, I got a turtle head right now.
7:07
[laughs] We saw the turtle head poking out. So you drink PBR. You're one of those guys that drinks PBR. How do you feel about some sort of Russian conglomerate headquartered in Cyprus with a CEO from Los Angeles?
7:24
How, how does that make you feel about your PBR? [laughs] I, I'm probably less pissed off about the Russians than I am about the fuckers from California having it. [laughs] [laughs] All right. Yeah. That covers it.
7:38
That covers that. At least it's still made in the good old- [laughs]... the good old US of A. If it was back in Milwaukee, it'd be perfect, but since it's not, it's like, mm, I don't wanna go to California.
7:47
I'd rather go visit Russia, I think. You know what?
7:49
You ought to come back here and check out the, uh, best place where they've got the old Pabst Brewery, uh, offices and the welcoming center that they used for all the tours back up and running, and it's totally kickass.
8:01
Oh, and you would go crazy in the gift shop. [laughs] Yeah, they have a lot of old stuff from... I mean, it's not reproductions. Yeah.
8:07
It's actually stuff they found in the warehouse that they're just globbing onto and selling, and it's all authentic, original PBR paraphernalia.
8:15
So I don't know if I ever told you guys that I, when I was, like, 14, I used to actually work for, um, the Pabst distributor in town here.
8:23
Um, he, the guy that was his driver was good friends with my parents, and so he would, uh, when they would be short-handed for vacation, uh, you know, I would jump in the truck and I'd get to do all the beer hauling 'cause I could go in the back of liquor stores and stuff, but I couldn't put my face in the front 'cause I was too young.
8:39
Yeah. So I would... I have, like, Pabst shirts, and I have a lot of stuff.
8:42
And then when, when Bob passed away here just a couple years ago, um, his wife let us go through the basement with, back, you know, back in the '70s when you could do all those promotions.
8:52
So I have, like, styrofoam straw hats and vests and half T-shirts [laughs] [laughs]... that are brand-new. We made a fortune off that stuff. [laughs] Cool. Very nice. Very nice. [laughs] So, uh- Half T-shirts...
9:09
before you, before you p- take us to the woodshed on how much carbon fiber we have in our life, how about telling us about this- Oh, no. By the way, by the way, before you go any farther. Yeah? It's not carbon fiber.
9:20
It's carbon fibers. There's more than one fiber in it. Carpet fibers. Oh. This is from Charlie the Bike Monger. This is his statement, that there's, it's carbon fibers, not carbon fiber.
9:30
I'd just like to remind you that- And if I had, if I had a cool English accent, it would even sound better... uh, they speak the Queen's English, and we speak Merican. Merican. It's not the same language.
9:40
[laughs] And besides- Okay, it doesn't sound as cool in American, then. [laughs] All right. Yeah. You know, the high-end bike frames are single strand carbon fiber, one continuous.
9:49
The cheap ones are all cut into little, itty-bitty pieces. There it is. I just made that up. Well- Whoop, whoop, there it is... but it sounded good to me.
9:56
[laughs] So before we get talking all about that, tell us about your little trip to the desert and how you went, uh, how you went and rode your Pugsley and whatnot. Oh, it was awesome.
10:07
Um, so I don't know if you guys remember from any of the Single Speed events, uh, Carrie Montgomery and Anthony Crable from, um, T- uh, Austin, Texas. Oh, yeah. Those guys? They- [laughs] Yeah.
10:18
So they decided to get married in, um, in Flagstaff up at, up at Snowball. There's, uh, Snowbowl it's, it's called. It's like a part of the Arizona trail system, and it's way up in the mountains up there. Oh.
10:30
And, uh, I couldn't make it to the reception back in Austin, so they invited us out for a little get-together. So I, we took the Pugsleys out there, and we camped for a couple days.
10:40
And they rode up to a specific spot that when Carrie went to school out there, that was kind of her hangout, and they got married up there. And then when they got done with their wedding, they rode.
10:50
And, uh, you guy- and you guys know Scandinavian Jesus. Yeah. He was the one that performed the ceremony. [laughs] Oh, nice. And, uh, it... What's that? Yeah, good job. Oh, nice. Yeah. Scandinavian Jesus.
11:01
So then, yeah, then she rode- I mean, how many people can say, "I got married by Scandinavian Jesus?" Okay. How cool is that, right? I know.
11:07
So they rode down the hill, down, back down to the trail, and then we were all sitting down there waiting for them at the, at the foot of the trail, uh, on the Arizona Trail in Aspen. It was just beautiful.
11:17
Um, and so they were in a tux and a wedding dress, and we were all on our bikes. And we [laughs] proceeded to have a small, little, the, a little ceremony with cake and shots of Fireball.
11:29
And then we began to do handups on the trail with the Fireball. [laughs] As, as people either walked by or rode their bikes by, uh, we had a couple that was walking by from... They were originally from,
11:43
uh, um, South Dakota, that wound up just hanging out and drinking with us for, like, a half hour, so that was perfect. Very cool. And then we finished, we finished their, their day by riding, um...
11:54
From that point, we were up at, up at, up at the top of the trail system, about as high up as we could get, and then we rode about a four and a half mile downhill back, close to back where we were camping.
12:03
So that was- That was kick-ass just for a nice downhill ride.
12:08
Um, I was the only one on a fat bike because they, um, one of the guys out there, Scott Bridges, loaned me his, his Pugly, so, um, and obviously the people in Arizona don't know how to set up a fat bike because I had to basically rebuild the thing when I got my hands on it.
12:21
[laughs] Oh, dang. So it was fun. We camped out for another couple days, and then we went to Sedona and rode on the way back. Oh, nice. Um, and that was my first time in Sedona. Oh, really? That was awesome.
12:32
Did you get, did you get any crystals? [laughs] Um- Did you visit any cosmic vortices? Cosmic vortexes-eses?
12:41
Oh, oh, no, but I tell you what, camping in the mountains up there, it's even scarier yet because there is noises that I have no clue what they were. [laughs] They have animals up there.
12:51
All we kept were being told by Dirty was is that it was just the local mountain lions, and they're tiny. Oh. Yeah, a part of the weasel family, I understand.
12:59
[laughs] Hey, later in the show, later in the show, Dirty Biker's coming on, and he's, uh, he's gonna tell us how to break your arm. Yeah, yeah.
13:08
So yeah, so then we, then we finished up by, the trip to Air- the rest of the trip from Arizona, 'cause we gotta get back to Dirty.
13:14
Um, the rest of the trip to Arizona, we wound up doing a short track race on Monday, and then I flew back to town on Tuesday. Oh, that's fun. So all in all, it was awesome. You live the life, man. Oh, sure.
13:24
And if you guys haven't ridden Sedona, you have to get out there and ride. I think that was one of the coolest places I've ever ridden. No, I- I've been there a couple of times. It's, it's awesome.
13:33
It's vis- it's a visual splendor. That's almost like- It is. It is... a vision organism. That red rock and the blue sky and the cosmic vortices. Oh, lordy. Yeah, it's spooky shit. Oh, boy.
13:45
Not to mention the fact that, did you go to Bike N' Bean? Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, totally. And good luck getting out of there without drinking several beers. Yeah, or, or some delicious coffee or checking out...
13:57
What's the bike brand that they, do they still make the, I think it's Agave Bikes, um, that they used to sell out of the shop there? Yeah, they didn't, I didn't see any around there.
14:04
They just, pretty much all they had were, um, were the non-nice stuff. They had, like, um, mostly, I think, oh, everything that they were, had out front was Santa Cruz.
14:13
I don't think they had anything but Santa Cruz in the store. Gotcha. So are you ready to provide the Luddite response to the Carbon Fibers Society of America at Interbike? Oh, okay. What was that?
14:28
Have you, have you prepared a statement in rebuttal of Interbike? Why? I didn't... You can't, all the, here's what I can say about carbon fiber. Okay. It's not going away. No? That's it. I, I don't know why not.
14:43
[laughs] But it's never going away. Well, it won't even go away after you're done using it. It's like if you put it in a dump, it'll last until the next generation of dinosaurs shows back up here.
14:53
That's, that's exactly what I was getting at. And it, it sounds to me, and I, and I've actually softened a little,
14:59
just a little, because the guys that are riding it on carbon that really like it on the carbon frames are guys that are using it in the dirt more than they're riding it in the snow.
15:10
A- and that might just be me, that might just be the people I've talked to, but that seems to be the case.
15:14
So if that's the case, then that's okay, because I'll never ride with those people again anyway, and they can have all the freaking carbon they want anyway. [laughs] All right, here's one last question.
15:25
How do you feel about USA Cycling coming out on the same day that Bike Ber- that Fat Bike Berky said, "Uh, we'll do another USA, US National Championship for fat bikes," USA Cycling said, uh, "Valentine's Day, Ogden, Utah, we're gonna have a sanctioned
15:45
fat bike national championship." On carbon fiber bikes. No, on any bike. [laughs] Well, that's what, that'll be, that'll be it.
15:51
The carbon guys can go out there and race in Ogden, Utah, 'cause they are just about as nerdy as the people that live out there. [laughs] Hey, Mike Pearson, Hallelujah Rider. And then you guys can run your- [laughs]
16:05
This is why we love you, Chewie. However, however, I got one more thing for you. You guys have to remember, I don't think you guys deserve to host it anymore anyway.
16:13
[laughs] It, it's in your backyard, and you let a guy from Colorado beat everybody? What the hell? Not a guy. You guys didn't have a tricky trick anyway. A freaking cyborg.
16:23
Come on, you'd, you would party with Ned Overend. I have, actually. I don't know if he even remembers me at all. It doesn't matter. Um, we met him at Singles. I met...
16:32
Don't forget, he raced in La Crosse, Wisconsin in the '90s when he was, I don't know if he was riding, I- Oh, yeah... I don't think he was riding for Specialized then.
16:40
But him and Cindy Whitehead came, and they were our professional racers at the one and only season we ran a NORBA sanctioned race, which will never happen again. Um, a race sanctioned, period.
16:52
I thought he, he raced for Schwinn in the '90s. But they, uh, they came, they came and raced at, uh, La Crosse at one of the, one of the, uh, original Midwest Mountain Bike Point Series races. That's cool. Yeah.
17:01
I thought those were at Red- Red Wing. I saw, I s- there was used to be a NORBA National at Red Wing, too, right there in your backyard. Wow. I don't remember doing one at Red Wing. Wasn't that Bob Wendell down there?
17:11
That might've been after I quit running the stuff, but I don't remember doing, being at Red Wing.
17:15
The only NORBA National stuff that we had was one in La Crosse, and then the next closest one I think was in, at, um, what's the place down by Dubuque at the ski hill down there they ran.
17:25
No, I'm sorry, that was Cactus Cup. They ran Cactus Cup races down there. Right, right, right. That's what it was. Yeah, remember Bluebird Springs in La Crosse, that race track?
17:35
That was, Bluebird Springs, the last race I ever promoted by myself was at Bluebird Springs, and I was gonna prove to the world that we could run a mountain bike race and do awesome prizes with no sponsorship, just the entry fee of the riders.
17:48
Uh-huh. And we got, like, two and a half inches of rain 20 minutes before the race started, and everybody said, "I built, rebuilt my bike too many times this year.
17:56
I'm not even fricking racing," so we all just went to the bar. We had, like, 20 people race, and the rest of us just went to the bar and got drunk and done. Did you guys have a fat bike class at Bluebird?
18:03
That was probably the dorkest I've ever seen- The really fast, really strong riders in the Midwest get on an evening. It was hilarious.
18:11
We about drank the Bluebird Springs bar out of beer just watching all the fast guys get really, really drunk. The band even went home and grabbed their instruments and came back and played. [laughs] Awesome.
18:21
That's what mountain bike racing's all about right there. Right there. Yeah. That, that's exactly it. And that course, Bluebird Springs- That's exactly it... there was a rocky downhill there that, man, just carnage.
18:32
I was from Chicago- Oh... so we weren't used to any hills. You'd go there- There, there was-... and it'd be like, "Ah"...
18:36
there's probably a pile of the original Gary Fisher bikes lay at the bottom of that downhill because they all broke right at the, at the, at the headset. Yeah. They just cracked in half and then they, they...
18:48
Like, then he would just send them a new one, and I know there was at least three that were broke there. Yeah, I... That's, that's what m- is in my memory, is forks sheared off the frame. It's like crazy stuff.
18:59
All right, Chewy, you keep, uh, keep on rocking in the free world, my friend. All right. I will see you guys again soon, I hope. Yeah, night shift maybe coming up. Are you gonna come? Well, good. Probably.
19:09
I should be out of jail by then. [laughs] All right, Chewy. Thanks. All right, we'll see you, man. See you, guys. Keep on rocking in the free world. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.
19:26
[whistles] This is- This is-... your weekly dose of fat [laughs] Welcome back to the radio program.
19:33
The same day that the Fat Bike Birkie announced that they would have the US National Fat Bike Championship, USA Cycling published this memo about a US national championship that will be held in Ogden, Utah on February 14th.
19:47
And when I say this memo, you're gonna have to go ahead and look in the show notes [laughs] for the link, because obviously you can't see it on the airwaves. There's actually a memo floating around the studio right now.
19:57
[laughs] [imitates printer] Memo. This is right in and out from them. So- So now there is a sanctioned and an unsanctioned US Fat Bike Championship.
20:08
So someday, [laughs] there should be a cage match where we unify the belts. 750 people here, 42 people here. Slush Bowl 17, Sunday, Sunday, Sunday. Sam Squanch versus the Abominable Snow Freak. Carbon fiber snow freak.
20:25
Mm-hmm. No rules. Uh, well, I guess there'd have to be rules, probably. [laughs] 'Cause it's USA Cycling, right? Well, they, they're gonna have rules. Yeah. Well, you won't have to buy a license.
20:38
Not for- Except for the guy that win, you know, the guys that have raced for USA Cycling. You gotta have a license. Can't be a national champion without a license. That's right.
20:46
You have to be licensed to be a national champion. So check- Well-... check out, uh, you know, all of USA Cycling's national championship races- Powder Puff Derbies and other events at- At the thing-... usacycling.org.
21:02
Yeah. That, it's, it's, you know, right there on the show notes. So you know what last Wednesday was? Mm. Like Wednesday and stuff? [laughs] It was full suspension fat day. Wow. Really? Yeah. I talked to Dave Turner.
21:17
Who declared that? [laughs] Uh, well, it was just kinda... Well, for me. Yeah. [laughs] I talked to Dave Turner of Turner, uh, Precision Bicycles about their new dis- dual suspension rig.
21:30
Dave's gonna be a guest on our show sometime in November. That's cool. You know, I know you have a Turner, and I think yours is one of the f... That, that thing's been around for how long? So like, uh, 2000? Yeah.
21:39
Somewhere in there. Yeah. That thing was actually... You could make that into a fat bike- Right... back in the olden days. Yeah. Before full suspension fat bikes existed, full suspension fat bikes existed from Turner.
21:50
Yeah, I think the, the Snowcats and Endos fit on that bike. I actually got an email from somebody, whatever... I forgot your name. I'm sorry. We're on the radio. I'm not in front of the computer.
22:00
But he asked where we could get Snowcat rims still. I know, and I, I didn't get an answer. I know Velocity had 'em or S- uh, 616 had 'em or something. 616 bought the tooling. Right, right. Okay.
22:09
And Velocity was going to make them. I don't know if they did. I don't know. There's a lot of rims out there, though, folks. A lot of rims.
22:15
You want rims for your fat bike, I don't think you'll have a problem finding rims this year. I'm seeing stock levels are pretty, pretty good at most of the, uh, distributors right now. Buy rims that you can go tubeless.
22:24
[laughs] Or not. Or put a tube in your tire. Yeah. [laughs] Or as long as it holds air, really. So you wanna know what else makes it, uh, full suspension Wednesday? I do, oddly enough. I also talked- I do...
22:39
to Aaron Atua, who just returned our tex- our test buck saw. That's hard to say. Say that three times fast. Test buck saw to the Q mothership. Hi, Mike Remez.
22:49
He's, uh, one of our BikeBlack ribbon test pilots, and people might know him as the Cuyuna Kid. Yeah, I met him up at, uh, the Fat Bike Summit in Hayward last year.
22:59
He's definitely on the, on the game out there at Cuyuna. And is that it? No. After that, to make it, you know, to solidify the Holy Trinity of- Yeah, 'cause two, two doesn't make a fat bike day, but three...
23:12
but three suspension- I called Dan Burt, he's the brand manager at Foes Racing, and we talked about their new Fat Proto. And you know what? Is that what it's called? Yeah, it's just a fat bike prototype at this point.
23:23
Okay. That's not the official name of it yet? No. [laughs] No. No. Because I would buy a prototype, that way you've got, like, one of the first ones. Yeah, man. Check it out, friends. Even if it's not 100.
23:33
The Foes Racing Fat Proto, yo. Fat Proto. I think we just found their name for 'em. Send the check. [laughs] Fatbike.com. Copyright. Thank you. So now we have to go to Sea Otter, dude. Did you say cock ring?
23:45
[laughs] What? Comes with a cock ring? Damn it. [laughs] This is a pro- Copyright. Cock ring... it's a PG-rated show, folks. Copyright. Copyright. Copyright. My ears were moist. Oh. [laughs] All right.
23:57
Let's call Dirty and send him some healing vibrations, 'cause he broke his arm and stuff.
24:04
[phone beeping] Enjoy this Verizon ring back tone while your party is reached[ on hold music] Is that Christmas music already?
24:23
Good morning. Dirty. Good morning, Dirty. What up, gentlemen? So we got you. We are recording, and we are making radio- Sweet... right now. That's amazing stuff. Sounds- Right over the airwaves... sounds sick...
24:37
right after your Christmas music or whatever that hold music you had was. Yeah, super, super sleuth, spy, playboy kind of set up on your phone there. Way to go, eh?
24:48
[laughs] So first off- I had to call you out before I talked, man... first off, we wanna send you out some healing vibes 'cause you broke your arm. Why did you- Uh, yeah... why- why'd you break your arm?
24:58
I just broke my arm. [laughs] Did you, did you feel that? Did you feel those healing vibes, hmm? Can you feel it? I, I, I did, man. I- I'm feeling the love all the way across the country.
25:06
You gotta, you gotta remember it's only 8:30 in the morning here, and I'm, I'm on disability, so I just woke up. Awesome. So you're in your, you're in your bathrobe or, [laughs] or maybe just a towel.
25:20
You taken your first pain pill for the day? I, I was actually waiting until after I talked to you to, to take my medicine. For the slurry speech portion [laughs] of the show is brought to you by Dirty's broken arm.
25:32
[laughs] Brought to you by the makers of- The pro- the proper term is shirt pocket. 'Cause I don't, I don't use a bathrobe, but, um, I, I am wearing, um, an o- an old Gnomefest T-shirt that- Nice... a friend sent me.
25:45
Yeah. Mm-hmm. Just for the occasion, just to get in the vibe, and no pants. How's that for a visual? Oh. [laughs] Nice.
25:52
[laughs] So before you broke your wing, you took out, uh, a State fatty out a ride on some, uh, SoCal dunes. Were those NorCal dunes, or was that just a movie set?
26:02
Where the hell wo- where the hell- Oh, they're- Where was that? The d- the dunes were, um, just over the, uh, Arizona-California border and just past Yuma, Arizona, in Southern California.
26:14
And, uh, right on the Mex- California-Arizona-Mexico border, and it's a, you know, off-road car, quad playground.
26:22
And we went down on a Monday, and, um, we were there Monday morning, and it's about, uh, about two and a half hours from me. And they were empty, and we had the whole place to ourselves. It was an awesome playground.
26:33
And it, it w- it was windy the night before. There was very few tracks. There was... It was beautiful sand riding on, uh, some, some new bikes. Cool. Was, uh, what did you think of the Statey?
26:44
I think, uh, I think for the price, they're pretty awesome. They're gonna really be a gateway drug for a lot of people getting into fat bikes, I think. That's, uh, that's my personal opinion. Yeah. Yeah, I bet they...
26:57
It's ab- They're coming in, they're doing, like, two models. They're, like, 500 and 700 bucks, uh, one with a coaster brake, one with, like, DT5 disc brakes.
27:06
And I think that, I don't know of anyone, I don't know, personally, if I ever ridden any bike that was that fun for that affordable, so, and- That's cool. I- And I dig it. [laughs] Are you gonna get any more time, uh,
27:19
running that bike on trails? I'd be, I'd, I'd love to- I think that- I'd love, I'd love to see, ride a coaster brake bike on some single track here
27:30
'cause the hills aren't, like, super big, but- They are, they are alive with the sound of music, however. Uh, indeed. So are you gonna get to ride that bike anymore?
27:39
Yeah, I think so, as soon as I have, as soon as I have a functional arm. Um, I'm fortunate, the guys from State, they, they're about, you know, two miles from my house.
27:46
Uh, so they're local Tempe, Arizona, guys, and they, uh, whenever they have a project, they, they like to call me up and, and see if I, see what I think.
27:55
And I think that a bunch of guys that were riding six gear bikes around and now all of a sudden found the stoked for mountain bikes and cross bikes and fat bikes, that's pretty awesome.
28:05
You know, we're all, we're all, we're all diversifying a little bit. Yeah, I think it's- So it's, it's pretty cool...
28:09
I think it's interesting that there's a couple of other companies that were kind of traditionally fixie or single speed companies that have gotten the fat bike vibe as well. Um, it's, it's cool to see State doing it.
28:20
Fixation's doing it. Wyatt's doing it. There's, there's some companies that n- normally you wouldn't consider them fat bike people, but the crossover is actually pretty strong.
28:30
It, it, it's really, it's really great 'cause, like, the, it's a pretty, it's a pretty chill, um, chill vibe in both scenes, you know?
28:36
Everybody just kinda showing up in shorts and a T-shirt and going for a ride and having a really good time. You know, it's, that's, that's my opinion. That's what I see and hear. Yeah, abs- absolutely.
28:44
Even, you know, we, we, we went, we went to go do a little, a little video shoot for, um, for the release. They're releasing this bike, like, next week finally to the public, and, um, after unveiling it at Interbike.
28:55
And, you know, the, the photographer and the videographer that were there, like, they were so stoked on the bike and just watching us have fun as they were filming us that we got...
29:04
We went, we're, we're like, "Okay, we're done. We're going back to the car." And they just, the photographer and the videographer just grabbed the bikes and took off- [laughs]...
29:10
and went and did their own thing, had to get to ride it. Awesome. They were so pumped on the bikes and, and they're just hooting and hollering. They're in there ear. So- Well, you, you- It, it was really good to see.
29:18
Really super healthy. Right on.
29:19
Yeah, we've, we've talked to a couple kind of, you know, older generation mountain bikers recently with our interview with Ned Overend last week, and we talked to Gary Fisher at Interbike and had him on video.
29:30
Both of them said the same thing about the fat bike scene, is that it kinda goes back to the roots of what was fun about mountain biking in the beginning, and they were really stoked that fat bikes were, you know, something that people were getting into that was about fun.
29:43
Yeah, fun. Yeah, I, I think so too. You know, I mean, I, I started out, you know, 22 years ago, BMX racing and then got a mountain bike and got addicted to that.
29:53
And went everything from downhill racing to single speed to 24 hour racing.
29:57
Now I'm kinda coming full circle and, and got back to, like, just exploring the woods, exploring the desert with the fat bike and using it as, like, an all-terrain adventure mobile. It just, it's
30:07
just, just fun, you know? And it, it gets me out there to places where I normally wouldn't go, and that's extra cool 'cause I just like to see, see the world from the bike seat. Yeah, you just got a, a pack raft.
30:19
I also am a new owner- [laughs]... of a pack raft. So we'll have to, uh, do some sort of, uh, two-wheel drive and amphibious, uh, cross-dressing date down there in the desert somehow. Sure. Let's meet- I have-...
30:31
let's meet the monsters... I, I have some ideas already, and I, I live in Arizona, and I have a pack raft idea. There ain't much water here. But unfortunately, like, two days after I got my pack raft, I broke my arm.
30:40
So I'm gonna, I'm gonna open up a beer for you guys. Well, we- Might as well. I, oh, my- Well-... my beer's empty. [laughs] Our, our, our- JK- It's okay, Dirty, I can drink a beer. I'm on disability. JK can- All right...
30:52
hook you up with, uh- Yeah, they'll, it, fresh beer. We're trying to find- [laughs] We're trying to find a beer- There we go... a beer intern. Uh, so, so far, n- so far, [laughs] n- so what? With a skirt, preferably.
31:06
Oh, it doesn't matter. I could w- I could wear my kilt. [laughs] You could be a beer in- a beer intern. He's, he's moving to Denver. Yeah, he's 1,500 miles away, that malarkey monkey. Well, well he'll just telecommute.
31:17
So dude, thanks for coming on the show. We really appreciate- Thank you for having me... you taking the time.
31:20
Um, you know, you know, whenever, uh, whenever you think about, you know, drunk backyard, think of drunkcyclists.com. Fuck yeah, drunkcyclists.com. Drunkcyclists.com. These guys, these guys do it right. Those guys.
31:33
Those guys. You and Cupcake and the boys. Hey man, have a great Friday. [laughs] All right. We'll see you later. All right, Dirty. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.
31:50
So next week, we're hosting a couple of the hombres from the official Intergalactic Surly regional hedge, hedgequarters.
32:43
[laughs] Hedge- Hedge-... hedgehog quarters... hedgehogs. [laughs] Hedge quarters. How many beers have you had? This is my third beer, and I've barely touched it, and I am lit. [laughs] God.
32:55
That's what makes this show amusing, ladies and gentlemen. Maybe so. Not so much. [laughs] So w- what we, the reason why we mention that Surly is coming is not because I'm drunk. Or I'm wearing their pants.
33:06
Or that Sven is wearing his pants and making [laughs] JK and I look at his pants. Oh. [laughs] Did you see how it has, like, the, uh, the center- Soffits? Yeah. There are more soffits. [laughs] They're nice pants.
33:19
Is we want you to email us questions that you'd like us to ask those Surly hombres. Not me, our listeners. Our listeners. Yeah. That's right. So- Listeners...
33:27
you know, and, y- understand if you ask the question, "When can I get a Dirt Wizard three inch by 29 inch?" They're going to send rabid weasels to your house. So send me your questions. Put Surly Q as the subject.
33:44
My email will be in the show notes, but as you know, it's gomez@fat-bike.com. That says comma com here. [laughs] Fatbike, comma, com. Comma com. Comma com. Let's go to comma co- comma, comma, comma, kamikaz- kamikazicom.
34:00
This week is a rich pageant- Yes... of fat bike links. We'll just kinda run through them really quick. We've got, uh, the, pretty good instructional video on, uh, how to do your fat bike tubeless.
34:14
And it, it, it's not for, you know, necessarily an easy to convert setup, which Sven says, "Nah, forget about it." I did it. I did it on rims that are not officially tubeless. All right. From Schlick Cycles.
34:26
Those are not officially tubeless, folks. By, by you, do you mean Jim? [laughs] No, no, I did it. Before, before Jim even- I- Before he even knew what a fat bike was, that guy. Anyway.
34:38
Our friend from Homer, Bjorn, he took a ride out to Agyasya, and there's some beautiful pictures. Yeah, Bossa Nova packing list for bike packing from the Pedaling Nowhere blog.
34:49
We have fresh produce from Salsa Cycles there. The, uh, Alaskan Fat Bike Education, or Re-Education Camp. Re. Yeah, this one's kinda interesting.
34:58
There's a new race that's done by some, uh, some dog mushing types up there in the Iron Range area of, uh, Michigan, Iron County, uh, Michigan. Mm.
35:08
They're actually gonna get fat bikers up on the, uh, the dog mushing route, and they're offering up a $1,500 minimum purse. Wow. There's a link to that in the show notes. Cool. Mushers- Mushers... becoming fat bikers.
35:20
Yeah. We have, uh, a little piece from our amigo in Swedish Lapland. Rise of the Planet of the Ape Fat Bikes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's talking about how fat bikes are becoming ubiquitous, even up there in, uh, in Lapland.
35:35
Bruce. Bruce. Bruce. Bruce. Come on the show, Bruce. And we've got some full suspension, uh, musings on the Salsa. I think they're doing 30 days of, uh, blog posts or something. That's, that's the fresh produce.
35:47
That's the fresh- Every day- Oh, that's part of the fresh produce... every day, farmers bring fat bike stories to the farmer's market, and Salsa puts it on their blog.
35:56
Thanks again to Surly for sponsoring the radio portion of today's broadcast. And covering my ass. Visit your local bike shop today and ask them, "What color is the new black?"
36:08
And if they say anything other than, "There is no new black," get a new local bike shop. Keep the rubber side down, [laughs] and, and roll some fatties. Now. I'd like to be sending a shout-out to Olov and The Lars.
36:25
Sup, hombres? And how about a shout-out to Gary Davren in Ireland? Or Earl in Madison. And Gary in Fruita. [laughs] Or Travis from Durango. [laughs] Travis, come on the show, bro. You already had Ned. Now it's your turn.
36:42
Adios, amigos. Talk to you later. You've been listening to Fat Bike Radio's Weekly Dose of Fat. Find us on the web at fat-bike.com/radio. We'll see you next time.
