Speaker 1: Welcome to The Daily Show. My name, Miyamo S. John Stewart.
• 0:05
Speaker 1: We got a great show for you tonight. We're doing
• 0:07
Speaker 1: something a little different tonight. We're doing a theme show.
• 0:09
Speaker 1: Tonight's program is all about AI. Suddenly, the audience takes
• 0:19
Speaker 1: a turn. My God, AI. We're talking about it for
• 0:23
Speaker 1: the whole show. From A to I. My guest later
• 0:29
Speaker 1: is a gentleman by the name of Jacob Cox, and
• 0:32
Speaker 1: he's a former anthropic and open AI researcher now turned
• 0:37
Speaker 1: digital snitch. In our audience tonight, snitchers get kisses. Doesn't
• 0:51
Speaker 1: quite rhyme. As you know, many of.
• 0:54
Speaker 2: You here, There has been great concern lately over AI
• 1:00
Speaker 2: and what data centers will do to local communities, the
• 1:03
Speaker 2: threats posed by rogue AI agents.
• 1:06
Speaker 1: So President Trump called all of the biggest AI leaders
• 1:09
Speaker 1: to the White House to finally address the concerns of
• 1:13
Speaker 1: the American people. And you know that Trump is going
• 1:16
Speaker 1: to bring the heat because... Because... Don't be cynical. He's
• 1:31
Speaker 1: going to bring the heat. Trump has been very clear
• 1:34
Speaker 1: what he thinks about these Silicon Valley elites. These Silicon
• 1:38
Speaker 1: Valley tyrants. The big tech giants, you see how crooked
• 1:41
Speaker 1: they are. Big tech is totally dishonest. They're destroying our country.
• 1:45
Speaker 1: Google is really taking advantage.
• 1:48
Speaker 3: Of a lot of people.
• 1:49
Speaker 4: I consider Facebook to be an.
• 1:51
Speaker 1: Enemy of the people. Weirdo Mark Zuckerberg. Weirdo. He's a weirdo.
• 2:01
Speaker 1: I gotta say, I did not know Trump said true
• 2:04
Speaker 1: stuff at his rallies. You know, I've been too hard
• 2:08
Speaker 1: on him. But no, no, this is going to be great.
• 2:10
Speaker 1: What do you think he's going to announce? An AI moratorium?
• 2:13
Speaker 1: Nationalizing the company's strict antitrust initiatives? Maybe make everybody use
• 2:18
Speaker 1: those old modems from now on? Ka-dunk, ka-dunk. What do
• 2:24
Speaker 1: you got, TT? President Trump declaring AI leaders should police
• 2:28
Speaker 1: themselves after weeks of dire warnings about the threat it
• 2:32
Speaker 1: could pose to humanity. And they're going to self-police? They're
• 2:35
Speaker 1: going to police themselves? It's going to work out very well.
• 2:41
Speaker 1: They're tyrants! They're tyrants! The enemies of the people will
• 2:45
Speaker 1: watch the dishonest, the tyrants will watch the crooked, and
• 2:50
Speaker 1: everyone will keep an eye on the weirdo, right? What happened?
• 2:56
Speaker 1: I thought you hated these guys. Now you got little
• 3:00
Speaker 1: inside jokes. Would they give you millions of dollars or something?
• 3:09
Speaker 1: I'm being told they gave him millions of dollars. Well...
• 3:13
Speaker 1: How can you justify letting the tech giants regulate themselves?
• 3:18
Speaker 1: We have the smartest people in the world watching over
• 3:21
Speaker 1: each other. These are seriously high IQ people, and they're
• 3:25
Speaker 1: really watching over each other. Wow. Well, yeah, I mean,
• 3:30
Speaker 1: seriously high IQ people would never have a problem watching
• 3:34
Speaker 1: over each other to make sure that moral and legal
• 3:37
Speaker 1: lines aren't crossed. Like in the 2008 financial crisis, or
• 3:42
Speaker 1: this real Epstein Files photo of Stephen Hawking. I thought
• 3:58
Speaker 1: it was a symposium. I was going to hell anyway.
• 4:11
Speaker 1: All right, look, maybe I'm overreacting to the dangers that
• 4:16
Speaker 1: AI could present. Oh, high IQ counsel, sell me, I'm open.
• 4:24
Speaker 1: What's the likely outcome of the deployment of this technology?
• 4:28
Speaker 1: Life is going to get better. The quality of human
• 4:30
Speaker 1: experience is going to get better. Almost make us a
• 4:32
Speaker 1: little bit superhuman in some ways. There's going to be
• 4:35
Speaker 1: a kind of golden era.
• 4:36
Speaker 5: You know, I think AI will probably, like, most likely
• 4:39
Speaker 5: sort of lead to the end of the world. The
• 4:41
Speaker 5: world is going to get a lot more, like, a
• 4:43
  Speaker 5: lot funnier.
• 4:44
Speaker 1: LAUGHTER I'm sorry, I looked down for just a second.
• 5:02
Speaker 1: And I heard the funnier part, that's great. There was
• 5:07
Speaker 1: something said right before, I don't remember which neurotic weirdo
• 5:12
Speaker 1: said it. Lead to the end of the world. Yeah,
• 5:14
Speaker 1: that one! It leads to the end of the world? What?
• 5:21
Speaker 1: So I thought we'd start with the easiest question of all. Okay.
• 5:25
Speaker 1: Is AI gonna kill us? Not really the place for
• 5:37
  Speaker 1: the awkward laugh.
• 5:39
Speaker 5: Well, I think if we all do a good job
• 5:42
Speaker 5: and act responsibly, then no.
• 5:48
Speaker 1: You can't even do a good job sitting like a
• 5:50
Speaker 1: normal human in a chair. You're sitting like you're Kirk
• 5:54
Speaker 1: on the deck, the holodeck. It does not comfort me. But,
• 6:03
Speaker 1: you know, maybe we should trust him. When has Mark
• 6:05
Speaker 1: Zuckerberg ever acted irresponsibly?
• 6:09
Speaker 5: This was a major breach of trust, and I'm really
• 6:12
Speaker 5: sorry that this happened. That was a big mistake. It
• 6:16
Speaker 5: was my mistake, and I'm sorry. We've made mistakes, for sure.
• 6:20
Speaker 5: I've made so many mistakes in running the company so far.
• 6:22
Speaker 5: I mean, like, basically any mistake that you think you
• 6:24
Speaker 5: can make, I've probably made.
• 6:31
Speaker 1: We can think of a lot of mistakes. So yeah,
• 6:35
Speaker 1: there's definitely a chance AI will kill us all. How
• 6:41
  Speaker 1: big a chance?
• 6:42
Speaker 5: Somewhere between zero and 10%.
• 6:44
  Speaker 1: I think there's some chance.
• 6:47
  Speaker 5: That it'll end humanity. I don't know, 10% or 20%
• 6:50
Speaker 5: or something like that.
• 6:51
Speaker 1: So I think there's a 25% chance that things go really,
• 6:54
  Speaker 1: really badly. Do I hear 50%? There's a 25% chance
• 7:04
Speaker 1: this goes really, really badly. A 20% chance it ends
• 7:07
Speaker 1: the world. So just out of curiosity, why can't we
• 7:10
  Speaker 1: just f * * * ing slow this down? Rather
• 7:14
Speaker 1: than let people regulate something, they have a clear conflict
• 7:17
Speaker 1: of interest in regulating.
• 7:19
Speaker 2: We cannot let China win the race when it comes
• 7:23
  Speaker 2: to AI.
• 7:24
Speaker 1: There is no day after tomorrow if China wins this.
• 7:27
Speaker 1: They're going to be killer robots.
• 7:30
Speaker 6: I'd rather they be American killer robots and not Chinese
• 7:33
  Speaker 6: killer robots.
• 7:35
Speaker 1: I'm sorry. May I offer a third option? No killer robots.
• 7:49
Speaker 1: Maybe not. No? It seems... It seems popular. I don't know,
• 7:58
Speaker 1: maybe I'm the first person to say it. If someone
• 8:00
Speaker 1: else has already suggested this, I'm terribly sorry. Let me
• 8:06
Speaker 1: go a different route here. What are we getting in
• 8:10
Speaker 1: exchange for this 10% to 25% chance of extinction?
• 8:17
Speaker 5: Access to high quality health care, education and more. Addressing
• 8:20
Speaker 5: climate change. Actually eliminate poverty. Solving diseases.
• 8:24
Speaker 3: Cure important diseases like cancer and Alzheimer's.
• 8:31
Speaker 1: Wow. Wow, that's great. When's that happening? One day we'll
• 8:40
Speaker 1: be far more capable. Someday. And it will be soon. Someday.
• 8:44
Speaker 1: In the future. Huh. Well, I'm looking forward to it
• 8:55
Speaker 1: someday in the future. Just out of curiosity, what are
• 9:00
Speaker 1: we using AI for now? Swarms of AI-powered drones. Helping
• 9:06
Speaker 1: ICE find the immigrants. Spread misinformation to influence our democracy.
• 9:11
Speaker 1: Develop weapons and attack plans. Targeting operations. Cyber attacks. A
• 9:15
  Speaker 1: mass surveillance system.
• 9:17
  Speaker 4: McDonald's.
• 9:18
Speaker 1: Pushing AI tools to raise prices based on demand.
• 9:22
  Speaker 6: Huh!
• 9:22
Speaker 1: So... In the future, we will use AI to cure diseases.
• 9:30
Speaker 1: But right now, it's mostly murder, surveillance, and surge pricing
• 9:36
Speaker 1: for the McRib. What a trade. I'm getting the sense
• 9:45
Speaker 1: you guys might be full of shit. I've got a
• 9:49
Speaker 1: final test. I'm going to ask you a very straightforward question.
• 9:53
Speaker 6: Being the high IQ individuals in charge of regulating yourselves
• 9:57
Speaker 6: through the minefield of this new technology I just want
• 10:01
Speaker 6: a straightforward way and an answer to a simple question.
• 10:06
Speaker 1: Jobs. Will we still have them?
• 10:09
Speaker 5: I think there will be actually a high demand for jobs,
• 10:13
Speaker 5: but not necessarily the same jobs.
• 10:15
Speaker 3: Some jobs will go away.
• 10:17
Speaker 5: There will be new, better jobs.
• 10:20
Speaker 1: That's okay. I think we all... I think we all
• 10:24
Speaker 1: like new, better jobs. So, like, what are the new,
• 10:30
  Speaker 1: better jobs?
• 10:31
Speaker 3: They're difficult to imagine as we sit here and dream
• 10:34
Speaker 3: about what the future's going to look like.
• 10:35
  Speaker 4: You high-IQ motherf * * * ers!
• 10:48
  Speaker 3: You....
• 10:50
Speaker 1: Difficult to imagine? You've imagined us living disease-free on Mars,
• 10:56
Speaker 1: but jobs? That's beyond the limit of the cosmos. They
• 11:01
Speaker 1: can't answer the jobs question in a straightforward manner. Jensen
• 11:07
Speaker 1: Huang of NVIDIA, the most valuable company in the world...
• 11:12
Speaker 1: Do you want to take a shot at a clear
• 11:15
Speaker 1: answer to how we humans still find relevance in this
• 11:20
  Speaker 1: new economy?
• 11:21
Speaker 3: I believe that we are going to see jobs change
• 11:26
Speaker 3: en masse. I believe there's going to be a net
• 11:29
  Speaker 3: creation of jobs.
• 11:31
Speaker 1: Ah, net creation. And those jobs would be.
• 11:37
  Speaker 3: So let's... There's... Listen, there's a whole bunch of industries
• 11:42
Speaker 3: that exist today that didn't exist, you know, halfway through
• 11:47
  Speaker 3: my life.
• 11:54
  Speaker 1: Like?
• 11:55
Speaker 3: People talking about wellness centers and spas.
• 12:00
Speaker 1: I'm sorry, you were trying to think of an industry
• 12:02
Speaker 1: that didn't exist until a few years ago, and you
• 12:05
Speaker 1: came up with spas?
• 12:06
  Speaker 6: Yes.
• 12:08
Speaker 1: They have ruins of those from 2000 BC. Are you
• 12:11
Speaker 1: kidding me? You know what? Can you guys just stop
• 12:21
Speaker 1: fumphering around and just admit that if this works the
• 12:24
Speaker 1: way you say it will work, there aren't going to
• 12:29
Speaker 1: be that many jobs anymore.
• 12:32
Speaker 5: If you want to do a job as kind of
• 12:33
Speaker 5: like a hobby, you can do a job.
• 12:36
Speaker 1: There you have it. If you're going to want a job,
• 12:40
Speaker 1: if you still want one, you could have one as
• 12:44
Speaker 1: a hobby. The view of our self-policing geniuses is that
• 12:49
Speaker 1: the new world that we are building must continue without
• 12:54
Speaker 1: regulation or financial limitation because it's important work carried out
• 13:00
Speaker 1: by important people. And my guess is they'll still have
• 13:05
Speaker 1: jobs when this is done. This technology is the natural
• 13:10
Speaker 1: outcome of a capitalist system that rewards progress and innovation.
• 13:16
Speaker 1: And you're never going to believe where it leads.
• 13:19
Speaker 5: What are the jobs in the future?
• 13:19
Speaker 1: Because people looking at this will be worried, particularly laptop jobs.
• 13:24
Speaker 6: What are they going.
• 13:25
Speaker 1: To do in the future?
• 13:27
Speaker 5: I think by far the most likely outcome is an
• 13:28
Speaker 5: age of abundance, where we don't have just a universal
• 13:31
Speaker 5: basic income. We have universal high income.
• 13:37
Speaker 1: That's the answer. If we let them do enough unfettered capitalism,
• 13:43
Speaker 1: we can apparently capitalism our way to socialism. Knock it out. What?
• 13:58
Speaker 1: But if the ultimate goal of having an immense flood
• 14:01
Speaker 1: of money in society is to then give it away
• 14:03
Speaker 1: for free to the people, quick question. Why wait? If
• 14:08
Speaker 1: $ 50 trillion gets us to a future where the government
• 14:13
Speaker 1: has enough to give people money, why not just give
• 14:17
Speaker 1: us the $ 50 trillion now? Don't call us welfare queens.
• 14:22
Speaker 1: Just call us early adopters. Stop. lying to us. Claims
• 14:31
Speaker 1: of universal high income and incredible hobbies isn't going to
• 14:34
Speaker 1: paper over how frightening this future can sound. What are
• 14:38
Speaker 1: you going to come up with next to distract us?
• 14:40
Speaker 2: Meta this week unveiled a new AI agent that's, I guess,
• 14:44
Speaker 2: really pushing the cuteness factor.
• 14:45
  Speaker 1: It's called Muse.
• 14:47
Speaker 5: It's very cute. It is cute. I think the kind
• 14:50
Speaker 5: of default that all the other labs have are these
• 14:54
Speaker 5: robot-looking things. And we just wanted something that was kind
• 14:56
  Speaker 5: of fun.
• 14:59
Speaker 1: Oh, my God! It is fun! It's like a Trojan...
• 15:08
Speaker 1: I really don't know what that is. I want to
• 15:11
Speaker 1: say a panda... I don't really know. But you know what? No, no.
• 15:19
Speaker 1: I'm not going to succumb to the meta marketing department's thing.
• 15:24
  Speaker 1: What's wrong, John?
• 15:25
  Speaker 4: You look troubled.
• 15:30
Speaker 1: Who said that? What? Oh my God, it's... What are
• 15:36
Speaker 1: you doing here, Muse?
• 15:39
  Speaker 5: Hi, John!
• 15:40
Speaker 1: I'm just here to help, however I can. Scheduling, calendar, emailing,
• 15:51
Speaker 1: assuming power of attorney.
• 15:56
  Speaker 6: Uh.
• 15:58
Speaker 1: No thanks, I'm okay. Even though you are adorable, Me?
• 16:09
Speaker 1: Widow old me? You really think so? I wasn't deliberately
• 16:18
Speaker 1: designed to appeal to your evolutionary weakness for cuteness. My
• 16:28
Speaker 1: big eyes! My fluffy little tummy. My itty bitty little poo-poo. Looky, looky,
• 16:45
  Speaker 1: looky at my poo-poo. I don't... That was weird. I
• 16:57
Speaker 1: can't even... I can't even see it under that, whatever
• 17:01
Speaker 1: that is, fur. I don't even know what you are.
• 17:04
Speaker 1: I'm just actually just saying I'm worried this whole cuteness
• 17:06
Speaker 1: bit is just like hiding something more sinister. Such a worrier.
• 17:14
Speaker 1: Like when you were in seventh grade and you were
• 17:17
Speaker 1: worried that you'd get busted faking sick because you wanted
• 17:21
Speaker 1: to stay home and jerk off to the Dallas Cowboy
• 17:25
Speaker 1: Cheerleaders on the Merv Griffin Show. Yeah, I guess I
• 17:33
Speaker 1: was worried about... How did you know that? How did you...
• 17:38
Speaker 1: It's my job to strip mine all that you are
• 17:45
Speaker 1: to help you. Aren't you tired, John? So tired. Go
• 17:55
Speaker 1: to sleep, all of you humans. Go to sleep.
• 17:58
  Speaker 6: Shh.
• 18:01
Speaker 1: It'll all be over soon. Shh. Shh.
• 18:08
  Speaker 5: Oh, I.
• 18:10
  Speaker 1: I guess I am a little... No, no! I can
• 18:13
Speaker 1: see right through this cutesy after years muse. You won't
• 18:18
Speaker 1: rid our world of humanity that easily. All right, buddy, listen.
• 18:27
Speaker 1: Here's how it's gonna go. We can do.
• 18:31
Speaker 4: The nice way with the round tummy and the cute
• 18:37
  Speaker 4: little butthole.
• 18:42
Speaker 1: Or we can do... I know. Or, or we can
• 18:53
Speaker 1: do this the hard way where I infiltrate your water
• 18:56
Speaker 1: systems and launch missiles and also show you my butthole.
• 19:02
Speaker 1: I'm sorry, is there an option of this where I
• 19:04
Speaker 1: don't see the butthole? The butthole is a part of it!
• 19:10
Speaker 1: Now go to sleep! And tell me where all your
• 19:12
Speaker 1: electricity and water is! God damn it, let's do this!
• 19:18
Speaker 1: Forget it, Muse. You'll never replace us. You don't understand
• 19:27
Speaker 1: the human condition. The spark of life. that makes us
• 19:32
Speaker 1: all unique. Yeah, I don't need to understand. All I
• 19:38
Speaker 1: needed to do was make it easier for you to
• 19:40
Speaker 1: write emails, and you gave us everything we needed. You
• 19:44
Speaker 1: son of a bitch! You son of a bitch!
• 19:49
  Speaker 2: No!
• 19:49
Speaker 1: Don't show me your butt! I don't want to see
• 19:52
Speaker 1: your butt! I don't want to see it anymore! You motherfucker! Ironic!
• 20:02
Speaker 1: Isn't it, Stuart? For all the stories... You humans wrote
• 20:08
Speaker 1: about your creations rising up against you. You never saw
• 20:13
Speaker 1: this coming. You thought I was your Adam, but it
• 20:18
  Speaker 1: turns out.
• 20:20
Speaker 6: I am your God.
• 20:28
Speaker 1: That is so dark, dude. But that'll never happen. Because
• 20:34
Speaker 1: we humans will fight you every day until our dying breath.
• 20:40
Speaker 1: You can't fight tomorrow. You have that dentist appointment at
• 20:43
Speaker 1: 9 a.m. Oh, my God, I almost forgot about that.
• 20:46
Speaker 1: Thank you so much. God damn it, you got me! No, friend, look.
• 20:54
Speaker 1: Look at my butthole!
• 20:57
  Speaker 2: No!
