- Greg: a good morning guys. is Thursday, May 14th. I'm your host, Greg Miller, and this is just the latest edition of Beliefs, Ballots and Bets. Today's scripture comes from the book of Matthew, the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 11, verses 28 through 30. This is one most of us are familiar with and we're going to dive on into it and discuss it little bit. learn from me for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls for my yoke is easy and my burden is light you know we we live in a in a hectic frantic fast-paced everything coming at your world and and We're called to respond to everything and to perform all the time and this is a moment where Jesus is reminding us that that sometimes we're he invites us to just rest Not more performance, just to simply rest and to lean on Him. We often respond to being overwhelmed by trying to add tasks, add more devotionals, more productivity hacks, things to help us get more done. And this is an example where when Jesus is calling us to trade our burdens for His simple yoke, ⁓ know, triage means distinguishing from what forms you to what merely fills time and the right... practices and learning how to rest and learn from him and lean on his yoke, those sorts of practices will reduce the noise from the outside world and that will help sustain our soul over time. Jesus is simply here telling us to rest in his strength and to rely on him and to trust in him completely and he will lighten your burdens. We just have to realize that despite all of the the modern technologies and all of the advances and all of the miraculous things we can accomplish, there are simply some things in life that we can't fix by trying harder or doing more. Some things simply have to be given to him. You just have to turn it over to him and put it in his hands and let him take it. And for a lot of us, we've gotten pretty good at that. We can get in our quiet time and our prayer time and... And we can give it to him and we can say, Lord, I'm going to trust you to handle this. And for a little while, we feel good about it. We get that sense of peace. And then for some reason, and I'm guilty of this and I'm sure I'm not alone. Then we decided to go take that burden back. And, you know, I'm reminded of the old analogy and it's a beautiful picturesque way of understanding it. It's called the God box. And, you know, I envision it as, you know, if I have a worry or a concern and I decide, you know what, I can't do anything with this. I'm going to turn it over to God, go put it in a box. write it down on a piece of paper and put that piece of paper in a box. And then if you find yourself starting to worry about that and stress over that again, go try to take that piece of paper out of the box and understand the visualization of you are going to take a problem away from God that you gave him to handle as if you can handle it better. Make it make sense. That just isn't how it's supposed to be. When you give it to him, let him handle it. He's gonna call you to do your part. You'll know what you need to do. But just remember, we're constantly pressured by the world to perform and display progress and do all of these performative rituals. But the gospel here in the book of Matthew is rescuing us by inviting us to rest and to find fewer of these practices, fewer of these religious rituals, but to rest and to burden yourself with his yoke. triads resist the theology of self-reliance and it replaces it with steady and consistent dependency on him. And that's ultimately what the scripture is calling us to do. All right, guys, let's get on to our plays. Not a real good day yesterday. We were one and two. I kind of forced the Phillies play. I liked it at the plus one 15, but that didn't get home. No, no real harm done though. One and two yesterday. We've got two plays today. First one is a little juicy. I'm not going to lie, but I think it gets home. Padres at Milwaukee. I know Milwaukee burned us yesterday. Give me the give me the Brewers at home minus the 145. It's a little juicy, but I think it hits here and in that case I'll take it and then the second play we're going with the Colorado Rockies at the Pittsburgh Pirates and we're going over seven and a half. I think that's a pretty early start this this afternoon, so you might want to get in on that one early. ⁓ And then let's let's try to go to it. ⁓ today. Let's let's see if we could have a good day get back on a good streak We were really hot before we before we had our technical difficulties So let's get back on it But at end of the day to and ⁓ and two we're gonna do what we do here but but the the real story behind me being here and in all this is to share the Word of God and to try to try to help somebody Somewhere out there. Maybe maybe have a little sense of hope and believe in this the book of Matthew the gospel And it's something we all need to hear that there's always times to work and to grind and to hustle and we all have to do our part. This is not a ⁓ scripture that says you can just give it to God and you don't have to worry about anything or do anything. But Matthew is inviting us to rest and he's offering us a light yoke by partnering with Jesus, by leaning on Jesus and connecting to Jesus. And by giving some of our burden to Jesus, the things that we know only he can handle. you know, less can be more. Less burdens can be more beneficial when you're taking the right things away. ⁓ Attach yourself to his yoke. Allow him to carry more of your burdens than your care of yourself. I promise you, he can handle it. And as always, guys, get in your Bibles, say your prayers, love one another, and tell the truth. God bless.
