- 0:21SPEAKER_00: One of the hardest things for any of us writers to swallow is the idea of being ignored.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: We work for months or in some cases years on a book.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Then when we put it out into the world, there's no guarantee that anybody's going to see it or read it.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Unless, of course, you do the marketing.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Now, this isn't unique to writers.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Anybody in a creative field or anybody trying to build a career for that matter is going to face this hurdle.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: How do you get people to sit up and actually take notice?
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: How do you draw attention to what you're building?
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: The comedian Steve Martin famously said, be so good they can't ignore you.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Now, the simplicity of this statement is really stunning because those seven words contain the secret of getting noticed, building an audience and all the other things that writers and creators want.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: So it's worth asking ourselves whether we're committed enough to our writing craft to keep going until people notice us.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Are we willing to put in the early mornings and late nights?
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Are we willing to keep rewriting and editing until it's as good as we can possibly make it?
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Are we willing to learn marketing skills to help our book have the best chance at success possible?
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: The answer to those kinds of questions will determine whether people will ignore us or whether they'll eventually sit up and take notice.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: It's the willingness to do the work and to keep getting better, not necessarily your level of talent, that makes all the difference.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: So here's today's challenge.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Have you committed to becoming so good that they can't possibly ignore you?
