- 0:59So autism and executive function right there.
- 1:01There's there's loads of issues that cause stress with an
- 1:04executive function and it it happens to do everyday life.
- 1:07So when you think about like executive function within
- 1:09autism, right, it should actually be called executive
- 1:12dysfunction as it is a pretty much a huge struggle for people
- 1:15in the autism spectrum. So there are 7 executive
- 1:18function skills that people typically develop over time from
- 1:21being a child to being a full developed adult right now.
- 1:24However, these skills are difficult for people in the
- 1:26autism spectrum to develop and maintain, so I've outlined all
- 1:30seven of these and how they impact autism right now.
- 1:33So we're going to go through that together.
- 1:36Cool tea. OK, so the first one is
- 1:39adaptable thinking. Now this is the ability to
- 1:42change and adapt at a moment of sudden change.
- 1:45Now autistic people love problem solving, but unexpected change
- 1:49can cause huge issues and potential meltdowns.
- 1:52As we know if you if you look after somebody on the spectrum,
- 1:54if you are on the spectrum yourself, a meltdown could be
- 1:57imminent. If you are, not, if you haven't,
- 2:01if your routine changes, right? If there's a change in your
- 2:04plan, it's just going to go downhill.
- 2:08So #2 is planning the ability to think future and plan
- 2:12accordingly. So thinking ahead and plan
- 2:14accordingly. This is super difficult for
- 2:16people on the autism spectrum. For most people on the autism
- 2:19spectrum, due to an issue, we shot some memory difficulties.
- 2:22Now I have a video all about shots and memory loss and stuff
- 2:26like that and I'll try and leave it in the card above here and in
- 2:28the description down below, but it's really interesting to to
- 2:30check that out. But yeah, this is again another
- 2:32executive function issue. OK, #3 is self monitoring.
- 2:36The ability to self monitor how well or bad you're doing in a
- 2:39task or topic is one of these skills right?
- 2:43So for autistic people this is a difficult as it causes you or
- 2:48oneself to be detached and people on the autism spectrum
- 2:51find it difficult to evaluate oneself and detach yourself in
- 2:54that situation independently. So it's a very difficult skill
- 2:57to acquire. Especially if you have issues
- 2:59with this in you know you're in a condition like autism, then
- 3:02you know it's going to be difficult for you anyway.
- 3:04OK, so #4 is self-control and this is the ability to refrain
- 3:07from emotional on a physical outburst.
- 3:10As an autistic person on autistic communication issues,
- 3:14autism kind of provides you with lacks lack of understanding,
- 3:18complex communication issues and communicating one's emotions.
- 3:22So again you fall short on this kind of area.
- 3:25This is why executive function actually, you know, impacts the
- 3:28lives of autistic people quite harshly.
- 3:30So #5 is working memory now. This is the ability to store and
- 3:34recall memories for use later on.
- 3:37And this is interesting because autistic people retain lots of
- 3:39information, but it won't always be relatable to life skills.
- 3:43It may just be facts and knowledge on a subject of
- 3:45interesting topics. Like, you may know everything
- 3:47there is to know about Marilyn Monroe, but you want to across
- 3:49the street safely because you forget that there's this Highway
- 3:51Code, right? OK.
- 3:52So number six is time management.
- 3:55So keeping on track of how much time you are seeing on spending
- 3:59on a task, right. This is particularly difficult
- 4:01for artistic people due to the hyper focus and zoning out.
- 4:03So autistic people can like really focus on something that's
- 4:06completely outside of, you know, their whatever the task they're
- 4:09doing. So you're trying to work on a
- 4:10computer, but then you find like a there's a bug on your desk and
- 4:13you kind of like super focus on the bug.
- 4:14And then you kind of start zoning out to the task you're
- 4:16doing at that moment in time. So time management goes straight
- 4:18out the window. Difficult to do.
- 4:20So #7 is organization. The effective arrangement of
- 4:25times and materials, dates and ideas in an organized manner,
- 4:28right? This is really difficult.
- 4:29So it's difficult for lots of people in the Austin spectrum to
- 4:31do this accordingly because organization can be so difficult
- 4:35for people on the spectrum. I have issues with it, but one
- 4:38of my friends have issues with it.
- 4:39So once I see people don't have issues with organizing and
- 4:41that's like an executive function that they can excel at.
- 4:43But most of us do have an issue with organizing life.
- 4:46Like it could be organizing bills, could be organizing like
- 4:48days to go and see if it could be any kind of organization.
- 4:51But sometimes we can fall foul of that.
- 4:53And it just, yeah, it just doesn't doesn't always work.
- 4:56And that's just one of those downfalls of it.
- 4:58Guys, if you have anything to add to this or have a discussion
- 5:00to want to talk with me about this, pop in a comment down
- 5:02below. And I'd love to read every
- 5:04single comment. If you found this valuable,
- 5:06please share it on your Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
- 5:08account. And if you like this video, give

- 5:11Peace.
