Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone, and happy October.
- 0:22I have no idea how that has happened.
- 0:26We are in Q4 and Speaking of Q4, Speaking of quarters, I'm in a
- 0:32blazer today. You always know when it's like a
- 0:35business vibe, when I have like a meeting or something that is
- 0:39not just like making all the content and working like in the
- 0:42business. You always can tell when I'm
- 0:43working on the business based on what I'm wearing.
- 0:46And today I'm in a little blazer.
- 0:49So some days it's active wear, some days it's a sweat suit and
- 0:52some days it's a blazer. We do consulting on like Gen.
- 0:56Z marketing for different brands and we have just launched this
- 1:01really exciting retainer package and we had a big intake meeting
- 1:05today with a client who is coming on board for the
- 1:08retainer. So that was this morning and it
- 1:10was exciting and it went well and I'm very excited to be
- 1:12working with them in an ongoing capacity.
- 1:15So yes, that is why I am business profession today,
- 1:18although I'm still wearing like a casual T-shirt underneath it.
- 1:22Anyways, let's just get into the stories for today.
- 1:24Oh, also Spotify worked. So there is now video on
- 1:28Spotify. I figured it out.
- 1:29It was super, super simple. So we are now officially live
- 1:33our video on Spotify as well as YouTube.
- 1:36So please subscribe to Spotify because now that we have video
- 1:39on it, I am trying to like boost our engagement and maybe get on
- 1:43like a discovery page or something like that on Spotify.
- 1:45I'm not really sure how that works yet.
- 1:47I have to figure it out. But yes, please review us on
- 1:49Spotify. You literally just have to like
- 1:51click the stars. You don't even need to leave
- 1:53like a written review, although you can, but you can do that on
- 1:55like individual episodes. So please just leave a little
- 1:58star review. All right, let's get into these
- 2:00stories for today. So the first story is that
- 2:03Ariana Grande has spoken publicly for the first time
- 2:06about her boyfriend, Ethan Slater in a new Vanity Fair
- 2:10interview. This is basically the first time
- 2:12that she has spoken about him publicly, so I'm going to read
- 2:16some quotes. It definitely doesn't get any
- 2:18easier seeing some of the negativity that was birthed by
- 2:21disreputable tabloids. Of course, I went through a lot
- 2:24of life changes during the filming of this movie.
- 2:26A lot of people that were working on it did.
- 2:28We were away for two years, so of course I understand why it
- 2:32was a field day for the tabloids to sort of create something that
- 2:34paid their bills. She also said the most
- 2:37disappointing part was to see so many people believe the worst
- 2:40version of it. That was definitely a tough
- 2:42ride. There couldn't be a less
- 2:44accurate depiction of a human being than the one that the
- 2:47tabloids spread about him. So if you guys don't remember,
- 2:50it was speculated and kind of confirmed by his ex-wife, by
- 2:55Ethan Slaters ex-wife that he and Ariana started something
- 3:01while they were still married and she was freshly postpartum.
- 3:05And then about Ethan, Ariana said no one on this earth tries
- 3:09harder or spreads themselves thinner to be there for the
- 3:11people that he loves and cares about.
- 3:13There is no one on this earth with a better heart and that is
- 3:15something that no bullshit tabloid can rewrite in real
- 3:18life. Honestly, it's taken me a lot of
- 3:21hard work to be able to last this long and to heal certain
- 3:23parts of my relationship to fame and to do what I do because of
- 3:26these tabloids that have been trying to destroy me since I was
- 3:2919 years old. But you know what?
- 3:31I'm 31 years old and I'm not a perfect person, but I am
- 3:33definitely deeply good and I'm proud of who I'm becoming.
- 3:36I will never let disreputable evil tabloids ruin my life or my
- 3:40perception of what is real and good.
- 3:43The tabloid thing, it just doesn't land when Ethan Slater's
- 3:49wife has come out and in a very roundabout way, but like, she
- 3:52still made a public statement about this.
- 3:55And I understand the media tabloids, like they take
- 3:57something and they run with it, but there is usually an element
- 4:01of truth to it. And I think that just her
- 4:04putting like this blanket statement, like the evil
- 4:07tabloids trying to destroy my life, I think that's an
- 4:11interesting narrative. But I think it comes back to
- 4:14whenever we have spoken about influencers and their inability
- 4:18to like, properly reflect, when they get some type of big
- 4:21scandal or backlash. And you know, we've talked about
- 4:24it so many times on this podcast.
- 4:25But like, I truly believe that they can't really grow and
- 4:28change and properly reflect, at least not anytime soon from that
- 4:32scandal because the amount of feedback that they get and the
- 4:35amount of like, hate that they get in that moment is too
- 4:38overwhelming. So it's like self preservation,
- 4:40continue to see yourself in a more positive light and kind of
- 4:44giving yourself the benefit of the doubt in these situations,
- 4:47no matter what you've done in this situation.
- 4:49Obviously it's Ariana was being accused of being a home wrecker,
- 4:52right? So it's like she's not going to
- 4:54be able to believe that about herself.
- 4:56And maybe that's not her truth. Like who literally knows what
- 4:59Ethan has told her. OK, that's a big one.
- 5:01Men be lying. We have no idea what Ethan
- 5:04Slater told her about the status of his relationship when they
- 5:07started talking and seeing each other.
- 5:09But also, you know, like you would have to just truly believe
- 5:13to yourself because the whole world is calling you one
- 5:16horrible negative thing And like, how damaging would that be
- 5:19to your own self esteem and yourself perception if you
- 5:23believed it? That's my theory on that.
- 5:25OK, the next story that I have for you guys, I can't, I can't.
- 5:31I got tagged in this on TikTok like multiple times and I almost
- 5:35talked about it yesterday. I'm kind of glad I didn't
- 5:38because I didn't have the full picture, but we're going to be
- 5:42talking about the Sydney crumble cookie pop up drama.
- 5:46So N Bondi's crumble cookie pop up is going viral all over
- 5:51TikTok right now because it wasn't like a legit pop up
- 5:56affiliated with the brand. So you guys know crumble
- 5:59cookies, they are like this culty brand.
- 6:01I think they're one of the fastest growing brands in the
- 6:03world. Like I think statistically they
- 6:05are. They're only available in the US
- 6:07and Canada. I think about crumble cookies
- 6:10every single day. I am not even exaggerating.
- 6:13Like cookies are my number one favorite food in the entire
- 6:17world. Like for Christmas, for example,
- 6:19Annabelle, who has worked for me for four years, will get me a
- 6:22box of cookies. Like she will go on like a
- 6:24pilgrimage to a certain bakery in Sydney and get me like a box
- 6:27of cookies. Like I am addicted to cookies.
- 6:30I love cookies. They're like my favorite thing
- 6:31in the world. So of course, the fact that I
- 6:34can't get crumble cookies, the most viral cookies that I so
- 6:38desperately want to try. And I love a sugar cookie.
- 6:41So when I see those sugar cookies that have like the pink
- 6:43on them, Oh my God, I want to try that one so bad.
- 6:46So anyways, you can't get them in Australia obviously.
- 6:50So I think about them all the time on Sunday.
- 6:53This is like my own anecdote about this.
- 6:55Like this is how I am like related to this story.
- 6:58This is how this story has personally affected me.
- 7:00So on Sunday I did literally nothing.
- 7:03Like I just had like a rotting day.
- 7:04It was raining. I was just like on the couch
- 7:07hanging out. And then at like 8:00 PM, after
- 7:10doing literally nothing all day and having the whole day where I
- 7:13could have done this, I saw that crumble did a pop up in North
- 7:17Bondi in Sydney. And I was like, are you kidding
- 7:21me? I could have gone.
- 7:22I would have stood in line for four fucking hours for those
- 7:24cookies. I was freaking out.
- 7:26I was so upset. I'm actually going to put a
- 7:27screenshot of the text that I sent Sean, my husband when I saw
- 7:30this TikTok on the screen. If you guys watch, it's kind of
- 7:33unhinged. But I was freaking out that I
- 7:34couldn't even type properly. Like I was in panic mode that I
- 7:39had missed these cookies. I was like screaming like I was
- 7:43so upset. And then thankfully I came to
- 7:49discover that it wasn't actually the real Crumble.
- 7:54Now apparently the cookies are real, so I'll get into it, but
- 7:57apparently the cookies are real, but it was not affiliated with
- 8:00Crumble. OK, so here's like kind of the
- 8:02full picture, although we don't really know what happened or
- 8:06like what is going on. So from what the organizers have
- 8:09said on TikTok and in comments and via DMS to people who have
- 8:13been questioning them, and then those people have been posting
- 8:15these DM screenshots, they claim that they are basically just
- 8:20like fans of the brand. So they say that they flew to
- 8:22Hawaii and bought like 1000 crumble cookies and imported
- 8:26them back to Australia to resell, but that they're not
- 8:29like affiliated with the brand. This was not like a licensing
- 8:32deal with crumble. However, apparently before
- 8:35people discovered like that they had just done this themselves,
- 8:39They were kind of insinuating in roundabout ways on their TikTok
- 8:44that they were crumble. Like people would be like,
- 8:46there's no way this is crumble, Crumble is not available in
- 8:48Australia. And then they would comment
- 8:49something like, again, this is all like alleged.
- 8:51No, we are crumble. I think they were saying that
- 8:54because they are actually crumble cookies because one of
- 8:56the theories for a long time was like someone's grandma found the
- 9:00crumble cookie recipe and it was making like 1000 fake crumble
- 9:05cookies with some type of very similar recipe and they were
- 9:08selling them and using the branding to sell it.
- 9:10But they're saying like, no, these are crumble cookies.
- 9:13Like we are crumble, but like we're not like affiliated with
- 9:18crumble if that makes sense. OK.
- 9:20It's still unclear by the way, who these organizers are.
- 9:23This is my Roman Empire. Like please someone slide into
- 9:27my DMS and tell me if you know who these people could be.
- 9:30I need to know the people that were working the pop up, they
- 9:34were like teenagers. And I guess like the organizers
- 9:37shared a screenshot of like their or like a spreadsheet of
- 9:40like their breakdown of costs at some point.
- 9:43And it said that they spent like $1000 on staff.
- 9:45So I'm presuming that they hired like event staff to do, you
- 9:50know, like hand out the cookies, sell the cookies.
- 9:52Or it could have just been like their friends kids or whatever,
- 9:55but they're like teenagers, Although I don't think it was
- 9:57teenagers that organized this. So they had an Instagram called
- 10:01like Sydney Crumble and then they also have a TikTok.
- 10:04As far as I know, the TikTok is still up, but the Instagram has
- 10:07been taken down because like it's not affiliated with crumble
- 10:10and they're using their logo, their branding, their color
- 10:13scheme. They're marketing it as a
- 10:15crumble cookie, like a crumble pop up, but it's literally just
- 10:19not. They're just reselling crumble
- 10:21cur. They were just reselling crumble
- 10:23cookies that they bought 7 days ago.
- 10:26You guys, 7 days ago, some of the information that they were
- 10:30sharing implied that they bought the cookies seven days allegedly
- 10:37before they sold them. Like do we think that they were
- 10:40frozen? I have so many questions.
- 10:44Like I guess if you bring them in suitcases on a plane, you
- 10:47check them underneath the plane is so so cold.
- 10:50Like it is possible that that they stayed like frozen or like
- 10:55maybe kind of fresh. OK so at this pop up they were
- 10:57selling these cookies that had been purchased allegedly 7 days
- 11:01before for between 15 and 17. Fifty $15 and 17501750 for a
- 11:10cookie. Honestly I would have bought
- 11:12like 500. I'm not even joking.
- 11:15Like I am desperate to try a crumble cookie.
- 11:19I would have paid any price to try one before I knew that they
- 11:23were shipped on a plane 7 days before that.
- 11:26So now everyone is basically questioning like this is viral
- 11:28because it's so bizarre and everyone is questioning of the
- 11:31legal ramifications of this. So like I said, the legal
- 11:36ramifications around them using crumbles, branding and like
- 11:38reselling their product without permission, without licensing.
- 11:42There's also questions around breaching health and safety
- 11:45regulations with food sales because again, were these
- 11:50actually purchased 7 days before?
- 11:52And then there's questions obviously of breaching some type
- 11:55of like customs law with like mass import of food from another
- 11:59country. Australia has very strict laws
- 12:02about like bringing food and like biohazards and things like
- 12:05that into the country because it's an island.
- 12:07Obviously it's isolated. However, they did apparently
- 12:10show some document on TikTok, like a customs document that I
- 12:15guess shows that they were approved to bring the cookies
- 12:18in. But then there's all these
- 12:20questions about like the business tax because they mass
- 12:23imported and sold like commercial use.
- 12:25I don't know. I have no idea what's going on.
- 12:27If you guys are like lawyers or if you have any information on
- 12:31this, let me know. So I need to know and we all
- 12:34need to know. I need to let the scrollers know
- 12:37like we need closure on this story.
- 12:39This is like a mystery like and the messages so like some people
- 12:43have been posting, like I said, like DM messages between
- 12:46themselves and the crumble cookie TikTok account.
- 12:50And I don't know if that TikTok account is run by one of the
- 12:53teenagers that was working there, but it appears so because
- 12:57the DMS that they are sending people are so wild and
- 13:00unprofessional. Like every sentence has like a
- 13:03question mark at the end because they're like, you know, like
- 13:06they're they're making a statement, but they're putting a
- 13:09question mark at the end as if to like make the person asking
- 13:12them questions feel fucking stupid.
- 13:14Being like, I can't believe you would ask this.
- 13:16Like it's obviously XYZ question mark, you know, it's like that.
- 13:20It's so infuriating. I'm like, what is going on?
- 13:24I need to know. I need to know.
- 13:27So if you guys know, let me know so then I can let everybody else
- 13:32know. OK, Thank you.
- 13:34OK, and the last story that I have for you guys is that
- 13:37Brianna Chicken Fry is being accused of doxing a completely
- 13:42innocent woman because someone was impersonating this woman in
- 13:46her DMS and slid into her DMS saying something nasty.
- 13:49I know that sounds a bit convoluted, but stick with me.
- 13:52So this just happened like a few hours ago.
- 13:54So basically, Brianna posted a screenshot a few hours ago on
- 13:57her Instagram stories of Adm that she received from a woman
- 14:01named Charlotte. Now she had her full name in the
- 14:04DM, she had her full handle in the DM, and her photo was
- 14:06visible. And Charlotte's message to
- 14:09Brianna said this is the most ugly outfit I've ever seen and
- 14:12you look like shit too. And then Brianna wrote what a
- 14:16nice woman over top of the screenshot that is a very mean
- 14:19DM. So then she posted another
- 14:22screenshot of Charlotte's Instagram profile.
- 14:25So it says her name. It has like a little heart, hand
- 14:28heart emoji. And then it tags JP Morgan.
- 14:30So she basically has JP Morgan tagged in her bio as if like she
- 14:34works there obviously. And this account has 915
- 14:38followers, which I think is notable and you will find out
- 14:41why in a minute. It is a private account and
- 14:44Brianna wrote I wonder if your company JP Morgan is proud to
- 14:48employ bullies. And she had tagged JP Morgan and
- 14:51then she posted another story that said at JP Morgan you
- 14:54should really look into your employee at Charlotte and her
- 14:57handle. She says vile things online to
- 14:59strangers. I can't imagine what she says
- 15:01about her Co workers. And then she posted, Brianna
- 15:05posted like a zoomed in screenshot of this girl's photo
- 15:10from her profile picture. So it's like really big on her
- 15:13story. And she wrote Charlotte looking
- 15:15in the mirror, telling herself, no, I am a good person.
- 15:18And then Brianna posted a screenshot of text messages
- 15:21which basically claim that the woman in the photo that she has
- 15:26been like putting on blast that is a different woman.
- 15:29So the woman in the photo, her name is not Charlotte.
- 15:32She does not work at JP Morgan. Her name is Emily.
- 15:35And someone has been using her photo to impersonate and like
- 15:39troll people using this photo. And then she wrote again, just
- 15:43wanted to fill you guys in in case you know, the real girl in
- 15:45the photo is not a troll. She and then she posted a
- 15:48screenshot of someone's Instagram profile called Emily
- 15:52and she wrote we have contacted the sweet lady whose poor
- 15:55pictures are being used. People please report the
- 15:58Charlotte girl for using Emilyn photos.
- 16:00OK, so that all happened like I said just a couple hours ago.
- 16:03And then after that, Emily, who's I guess photos are being
- 16:08used as Charlotte, made a tick tock and talked about this
- 16:12experience and basically asked Rihanna to take the stories
- 16:15down, but Brianna has not taken them down, at least at the time
- 16:19of recording. OK, so there are a lot of
- 16:21questions. A lot of people don't
- 16:23necessarily believe that this girl is not also Charlotte
- 16:29because she has 19. What did I say?
- 16:31Oh, 915 followers. It's a private account.
- 16:34Like it seems like a filled out account.
- 16:36So people are like, this is not like a burner account, a troll
- 16:39account. It doesn't look like it would
- 16:40even be, like, an impersonation account.
- 16:43So people are kind of feeling like maybe that part of the
- 16:46story is not totally true. And, you know, this girl is just
- 16:49kind of, like, freaking out and asking people to message Brianna
- 16:53saying, like, this is, like, not actually her.
- 16:55This picture is not actually her.
- 16:57People are impersonating her. Like, who knows?
- 17:00I would probably do that, too if somebody who had over a million
- 17:03followers and such a rabid fanbase was, like, putting me on
- 17:06blast like that. Yeah, Like, I might be lying and
- 17:08saying like, well, it wasn't actually me.
- 17:10That aside, like, who knows, right?
- 17:12And I don't think we'll ever find out.
- 17:13But I think the interesting part of the story, which we haven't
- 17:15really spoken about a lot, and I think that's because, like, I
- 17:18have no idea how I feel about it, is when you send a nasty
- 17:25message to an influencer or celebrity and they post that
- 17:29without anything blurred out. You know, they keep your name,
- 17:33they keep your handle, your photo, all of that.
- 17:36Is that ethical? Is that right?
- 17:39Because on one hand, some people feel like, well, that's the risk
- 17:41that you take if you're going to be an asshole to someone in
- 17:45their DMS, you know, you kind of have to, if you can't dish it,
- 17:49what is it? What's that saying?
- 17:51If you can't take it, don't dish it or whatever, You know what I
- 17:53mean? Like you just have to expect
- 17:55that that could happen. And we've seen this happen so
- 17:58many times. So, like, it is kind of crazy
- 18:00that anyone is still doing that and expecting that it is a
- 18:04possibility, especially someone like Brianna.
- 18:05Like Brianna is so bold, like to not have the possibility of that
- 18:10being posted. I think it's a bit naive.
- 18:12On the other hand, there is a power dynamic at play, right?
- 18:16So like influencers, celebrities, they have signed up
- 18:18to have millions of followers and therefore millions of people
- 18:22giving them feedback. So, you know, when this is
- 18:25posted on their story now they're putting that attention
- 18:28on that private citizen who obviously did not sign up for
- 18:31that, is not used to having all of that feedback, that
- 18:35attention. That is a power dynamic that is
- 18:37them or a power play like that is the celebrity or the
- 18:40influencer kind of indirectly asking their fan base to go
- 18:44after them and to defend them. And it is different than posting
- 18:47a comment publicly. I think if you're going to post
- 18:49a comment publicly, then absolutely.
- 18:52I think it's fair game. Private though has a bit more
- 18:55nuance but like I also don't know I don't.
- 18:58My whole team and I were talking about this before I started
- 19:01recording and I have no idea where I sit for the most part.
- 19:05Most of the girls that work for me are like, I don't think you
- 19:09should do it. I think it's unethical.
- 19:11There is this power dynamic at play, You know, they don't think
- 19:15that you should be that a celebrity or an influencer
- 19:17should be putting any private citizen on blast like that
- 19:20because it is kind of sending like hate and bullying their
- 19:23way. Because I see both sides.
- 19:26And I do feel like you just shouldn't stoop to that level
- 19:29for sure. Like just block that person and
- 19:30move on. But I also understand that if
- 19:33you're getting fucking hate messages day in and day out,
- 19:36sometimes you're just going to catch someone at a bad time time
- 19:39and at some point they're going to break.
- 19:42At some point they're going to retaliate.
- 19:43And like, it could be your message that they decide to
- 19:46retaliate on. I don't know.
- 19:47I want to hear what you guys think.
- 19:49But that is it for mini scroll today, guys.
- 19:53Thank you so much for listening. Please remember to rate review
- 19:56and subscribe. It means so much.
- 19:59Please leave us a review on Spotify and I will talk to you
- 20:02guys tomorrow. Bye.
