- 0:28Hey guys, welcome to episode 155 of The Shift podcast.
- 0:32I'm titling the name of this podcast episode, Insomnia.
- 0:37And this week I just felt really compelled to talk to you guys
- 0:40about what I've been struggling with and what's been going on my
- 0:44head in my head and the process I've been like walking myself
- 0:48through as I'm struggling with insomnia and what I've been
- 0:53talking to my coach about. And so I can just like kind of
- 0:56just you guys can have a inside view of how I handle obstacles
- 1:03and how I deal with my feelings around those and how I bring
- 1:07myself back into a higher value cycle in them.
- 1:12So because I think sometimes we look at our coaches or we look
- 1:16at people and we're like, they're not struggling with
- 1:17anything. It's just, so I thought it would
- 1:19be really worthwhile for you guys to see into my brain a
- 1:24little bit of how I process some of these emotions and how I
- 1:27process some things that I am struggling with.
- 1:29So I'm going to talk to you about insomnia a little bit this
- 1:33week. And usually I have like points
- 1:36of what I'm going to talk about, but I only have 3 little words
- 1:39written down today. So I'm going to try to stay on
- 1:42track and just be really honest with you about my thought
- 1:45process as I've been working through not sleeping at night.
- 1:50So this started about, gosh, a week ago now, I guess about a
- 1:56week and a half ago, I came off of this awesome trip to Fiji and
- 2:00Australia. It's a 16 hour time difference.
- 2:02I've been so good honestly in my life of flipping back into days
- 2:09and nights because I worked night shift for all the years
- 2:12that I was a nurse and if I wasn't working night shift I was
- 2:14working 24 hour shifts. 7 years of that as a flight nurse.
- 2:18So I really kind of knew how to navigate. 1, being able to go on
- 2:24very little sleep and still function and then two, just like
- 2:28flipping myself back into the day and I felt like I was always
- 2:33really good at that. But what happened post this trip
- 2:37is we we're 16 hours ahead there.
- 2:40We flew all night long and then we came back and I decided even
- 2:47though I was up for like 30 hours, I'm just going to nap
- 2:51because it was already afternoon time here.
- 2:54And I decided I'm just going to nap for two hours.
- 2:58And then I'm going to get up and try to go to sleep that night
- 2:59because I'm going to be so exhausted.
- 3:00So I did that. Meanwhile, my husband and my
- 3:04daughter, they continued to sleep throughout the day and it
- 3:08took them a couple days to flip back in, but I did sleep really
- 3:12well that night. But then I got up at like 3:00
- 3:15AM the next morning. And then since then like 8 days
- 3:20past this, what has happened is I have been completely fine
- 3:25during the day. In fact I haven't even been
- 3:26tired during the day. I've been normal and functioning
- 3:30and then at night I have not been able to sleep until like
- 3:343:00 or 4:00 AM and I've been get only getting like 3 or 4
- 3:37hours of sleep. And I'm noticing a little bit it
- 3:41is kind of getting to me and then I'm overthinking how much
- 3:46I'm not sleeping and then I'm asking myself it might be a
- 3:49little bit neurotic. And I know that some of you guys
- 3:52listening can totally already relate to what I'm talking about
- 3:56because I know I have some shift workers here and I know I have
- 3:59some night shift workers here. And I know sleeping at night is
- 4:02hard for some of you guys. So I'm going to take you through
- 4:06this big obstacle that I've been facing of insomnia and how I've
- 4:10been kind of like working myself through it to bring myself back
- 4:14up. So the first thing when I really
- 4:19noticed that this was a problem last week is I noticed that my
- 4:23brain was spinning in confusion and overwhelm a lot more than
- 4:28normal. Now, usually this does happen to
- 4:31me, but I'm able to bring myself out of it so quickly.
- 4:34So when I recognized it about day four that I was starting to
- 4:38spin in a little bit of confusion, indulging in
- 4:41overwhelm and indulging and worrying, I told myself, I know
- 4:46that I do not make big decisions when I am tired or when I am in
- 4:52confused or spinning or overwhelmed.
- 4:55So I just told myself last week, I'm not going to make any big
- 4:58decisions. If I haven't made any decision
- 5:00by this point, I'm not going to make any big decisions this
- 5:03week. So that was step one.
- 5:06One thing that I want to offer you guys is when you know that
- 5:09you're suffering from either being tired or you're spinning
- 5:12or you're an overwhelm or you're having like this really big
- 5:15reaction to something, decide that you're not going to make
- 5:18any big decisions. That will just take a lot off
- 5:21your plate. When I decided that, I was like,
- 5:23OK, I'm just going to go through the motions right now and I'm
- 5:25not going to make any big decisions.
- 5:26So that was #1 what I told myself that I wanted to do #2
- 5:31one thing that I have really, really been practicing is at the
- 5:36point where I, it was like day three and I was like, this is
- 5:39not going to go away for a while.
- 5:40One thing that I've been practicing on a daily since then
- 5:44is just connect to what you need.
- 5:46So I've been asking myself in the small moments, what is it
- 5:50that I need in this moment? What is it that I need in this
- 5:55very hour? And sometimes it's been OK,
- 5:59maybe I need to drink a little bit caffeine.
- 6:01Sometimes it's been OK. You need to go on a 2, two mile
- 6:04walk. That's usually what I try to do
- 6:06every day. Sometimes it's like you need to
- 6:08just go out and get some sunshine.
- 6:10You need to drink some more water.
- 6:12You need to nourish yourself by eating good food.
- 6:16And then the second part to this is not only like connecting to
- 6:21what you need and asking yourself what you need, but also
- 6:25being willing to follow through with whatever that action is.
- 6:29So I know when I'm spinning and overwhelm and confusion, I'm
- 6:33always trying to fulfill everybody else's needs.
- 6:35I noticed last week I was really trying to fulfill my kids needs
- 6:38and their feelings and my husband and my friends and my
- 6:42family. And I'm not usually, I don't
- 6:45usually go into a people pleaser, but I noticed doing
- 6:48that a little bit. So that's where I've like kind
- 6:51of made the plan when I'm in the state or a state where I know
- 6:56it's not normal for me, I just have to connect to what I need.
- 6:59And it's very simple. It's just asking yourself, what
- 7:01do I need in this moment? And then being willing to follow
- 7:04through with whatever that action is that it tells you.
- 7:06First, the last piece of this that I wanted to share with you
- 7:10guys as I navigate it, some insomnia and this struggle right
- 7:14now is being willing to ask for help.
- 7:17I think vulnerability is a big thing and sometimes when we're
- 7:23in this state of not knowing and knowing that we're not like in a
- 7:30really valuable state for ourselves, asking for help is
- 7:33the hardest thing that we can do.
- 7:35I think sometimes that's really difficult for people who I know
- 7:38can relate to that or people like me.
- 7:40And so the third thing that I really lean into is I ask for
- 7:44help. So today I'm going to give you a
- 7:47little view of what I talked to my one-on-one coach with.
- 7:50So shout out to Claire if she was listening.
- 7:52Claire's my mindset coach. I meet with her every week for
- 7:55an hour, one-on-one with her. And I told her, listen, Clara,
- 8:01these are my set of circumstances.
- 8:03I said I have a lot of hard things going on this year.
- 8:06I have a couple kids moving out. I have one coming home back into
- 8:11the country. Then I got to move him to school
- 8:13and I was just listing out like all of these hard things that I
- 8:17have going on. And she's like, OK, she goes.
- 8:22So what is this story that you want to keep?
- 8:27Do you want to keep the story that for the next year, you want
- 8:31to trudge up this uphill climb on the bicycle, pedaling really
- 8:36hard with this heavy backpack, and it'd be hard.
- 8:38Do you want to keep that story? And I'm like, oh, I did not even
- 8:43realize that I was telling myself, this is going to be
- 8:46hard. This is my circumstances, this
- 8:49is going to be hard. And saying it over and over and
- 8:51over again and pedaling uphill. She goes, you can choose to keep
- 8:54that story if you want, but time's going to pass anyway.
- 8:57And all these things are going to happen.
- 8:59So what is the story that you want to have?
- 9:02And I was like, oh, the story I want to have is one of being
- 9:08empowered, one of being like, yeah, I can do hard things, and
- 9:13hard things are there for me and I am willing to go through the
- 9:17hard. And then we just started this,
- 9:19like, rampage of why I desire to do the hard thing, why I desire
- 9:25to not pedal uphill anymore, why I desire to let go of that
- 9:29story, and why I desire to be the person who does that.
- 9:32And I started out with the simple thought of asking myself,
- 9:35why do I desire to do these things and have the at and, and
- 9:41do the hard. And I started out with the
- 9:42thought of most people aren't willing to feel the hard, but I
- 9:46am. And then that led me to, I'm
- 9:49willing to feel the emotion. And then I signed up for this.
- 9:54This is what it's like to be alive and I'm good at it.
- 9:59And you guys, these are the thoughts that I used as a flight
- 10:02nurse too, is, is these slots right here.
- 10:06And So what I want to offer you is when you ask for help,
- 10:10especially when you have a coach who can see things a little bit
- 10:14differently than you, you realize all these beliefs are
- 10:19there for you. You just haven't been willing to
- 10:21access them yet. So what is the first belief that
- 10:24I have to be willing to believe when it had to come to doing the
- 10:29hard things instead of like this is going to be hard.
- 10:31I, I chose to lean into why do I want to do the hard?
- 10:36And then I just let the the emotion come and I let the the
- 10:45answer slowly and freely come out of me.
- 10:49And it was, most people aren't willing to feel the hard, but I
- 10:52am. And then I just kept going with
- 10:55my answer from there. And I think like some of you
- 10:58guys are getting stuck in the wrong question because my
- 11:01question I kept asking myself is why does this have to be hard?
- 11:03Why does this have to be hard versus the question needs to be
- 11:06like, why do I want to do the hard?
- 11:10And so we also came to the thought of if I'm not going to
- 11:15sleep for forever, long it takes for me to overcome this insomnia
- 11:19and this jet lag, how do I want to navigate not sleeping?
- 11:23And my answer is, I want to become the person who can just
- 11:26do it. I want to become the person who
- 11:28can navigate 3 hours of sleep. And hopefully, and I really do
- 11:33believe it's not always going to be like this, but I know that I
- 11:36can do it and I know I'm that person.
- 11:39And so I want to offer you guys this three-step process that I
- 11:44took myself through as I'm real time going through this
- 11:47struggle. One, don't make any big
- 11:50decisions when you know that you are struggling or you're facing
- 11:53an obstacle that is going to require you to feel a deep
- 11:57emotion. 2 Connect with what you need in the moment. 3 Be willing
- 12:05to ask for help. That doesn't have to be a coach.
- 12:08If it's a coach, great, because I think coaches can see things
- 12:10that you can't. But be willing to ask a friend,
- 12:15ask a family member, ask a coach, ask a therapist, be
- 12:17willing to ask for help. And then when you can overcome
- 12:22that struggle, which I really it was just a decision today to
- 12:25decide. I no longer want to look at it
- 12:27as an uphill climb. Like I want to let go of that
- 12:29story. So now I'm just deciding I'm the
- 12:31person who can do the hard. Then from that empowered place
- 12:35of where I want to be, I'm going to make some big decisions.
- 12:38And now I'm ready to, I'm ready to be like, hey, if I'm going to
- 12:41have insomnia for as long as it needs to be here, I am ready to
- 12:45from an empowered place, make some big decisions.
- 12:49So I hope this was helpful for you guys as I like take you
- 12:52through my process of how I navigate obstacles, how I
- 12:55navigate struggles. I feel empowered you guys.
- 12:58Now after really deciding, and this is taking practice.
- 13:01I was talking to my flight prep Academy group today and I was
- 13:04telling them the story of this and how I had to decide to make
- 13:08this identity change. And the reason why I'm so good
- 13:11at flipping when obstacles come up is because I practice it.
- 13:14This is a muscle and a weight that I have practiced.
- 13:17At first it took me a long time to ask myself the right
- 13:20questions and then come up with the answers.
- 13:22But now I can flip myself into a different identity because I
- 13:25practice it for so long. So practice asking yourself the
- 13:29right question. So instead of why does this have
- 13:31to be hard for me, ask yourself how am I the person who can
- 13:35handle the hard? Give yourself 50 reasons of why
- 13:38and when you can become that person who becomes better at it,
- 13:41it's going to come to a lot quicker.
- 13:42You're going to be more practiced at it.
- 13:43You're going to be able to flip it and go to empowered from
- 13:46disempowered to empowered very quickly.
- 13:49I hope that this was helpful this week talking to you real
- 13:51time about a struggle that I'm facing.
- 13:54And I want to invite you guys for those of you guys who are
